Welcome to our August issue of Northgate Living. I hope you are finding time to relax and stay cool. This last month of summer is the perfect time to pick up a good book. Think about joining in on Walnut Creek’s One City One Book summer reading book club. This year’s book is The Library Book by Susan Orlean, a celebration of libraries as well as a compelling story about the real 1986 fire at the Los Angeles Public Library. As the neighborhood schools begin their new school years mid-August this year, be sure to drive carefully around arrival and dismal times.

2019 One City, One Book: The Library Book by Susan Orlean

T

he Walnut Creek Library Foundation has announced The Library Book by Susan Orlean as this year’s One City, One Book citywide read. The 14th Annual One City, One Book invites the community to read the selected book, and to gather together at the library for informative programs and fun activities this fall.

Susan Orlean’s The Library Book has been described as “A dazzling love letter to a beloved institution.” Orlean investigates the 1986 fire at the Los Angeles Public Library, the largest library fire in the United States, and gives us a deeper look into libraries past and present. Her book is a crime mystery, a history of libraries, and a tribute to libraries and librarians everywhere. Orlean’s storytelling reminds us that libraries are about more than books, and now more than ever continue to endure as the heart, mind, and soul of a community.

Free copies of The Library Book are available at the Walnut Creek Library and Ygnacio Valley Library while supplies last. Community members are asked to “read and share” the books by passing on to family and friends when they have finished the book. Ebooks, audio books, as well as copies of the book are also available to be checked out at the libraries.

One City, One Book events are planned during the month of September to early October.

Free programs include hearing from a fire investigations captain about the Los Angeles Public Library fire and how arson investigations have evolved; a senior San Francisco Public Library librarian on the role of librarians and his own experience in saving books in the aftermath of the 1989 San Francisco Earthquake; a month-long library scavenger hunt; a book discussion and more. Meet the Mayos: Creating a healthier community

lice and Bob Mayo have spent over 50 years in the Northgate community and have dedicated their lives to improving the health and well-being of others.

The octogenarians met at San Francisco County Hospital in 1956 in the pediatric ward. “He was a junior medical student, and I was a senior nursing student,” recalls Alice. “We met in 1956 and married in 1957.”

Health and well-being was such a big part of the Mayo family way that all four of their children followed their parents into the healthcare field. Diana, the eldest, now lives in Washington but spent much of her career as a nurse in intensive cardio care at John Muir Hospital.

Kathryn is the Director of Healthcare Industries Transformations for Cisco. Robert is a Physical Therapist living in Texas, and Allyson, who was featured in the June issue of Northgate Living, is a Doctor of Behavioral Health, helping families improve the emotional wellbeing of their children.

Bob, a Northern California native, received his Bachelor’s degree from UC Berkeley in 1955 and graduated from UCSF Medical School in 1958. After spending some time in Forte Benning, Georgia with the Army, he was sent to Panama for three years. When he returned, he completed his Obstetrics/Gynecology (OB/GYN) Residency at the University of Mississippi.

Alice, who was born in Brooklyn, NY but moved to California as a 10-year-old, graduated from San Francisco’s St. Joseph’s College of Nursing in 1957. Her area of focus was pediatrics. She worked at various hospitals throughout their early marriage as Bob’s time in the Army and his residency took them to Panama and Mississippi.

They arrived in Walnut Creek in 1965 and bought a home on Pine Creek Rd. Bob worked as an OB/GYN physician and served as Chairman of OB/GYN at both the Concord and Walnut Creek sites of John Muir Medical Center. Alice ran the office and served on the medical auxiliary. She spent many years volunteering for various organizations, including the Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek. She also spent many years giving her time to the “Pink Ball,” which raised money for the Mt. Diablo Foundation (supporting Mt. Diablo Hospital before it became part of John Muir Hospital). Together Alice and Bob raised three daughters and one son; all four attended Northgate High School. “Northgate HS contributed to building an excellent foundation for all of our children. They all continued on to higher

Alice and Bob moved from Pine Creek Rd. to the Rancho Pairiso neighborhood 21 years ago to reduce the size of their property and be closer to neighbors. Bob is an avid Cal Bears fan, attending football and basketball games with the family. While he was a Cal Bear, he swam for the team and still swims five days per week. He is part of United States Masters Swim Association and was named the Pacific Master Swimmer of the year in 2018. Alice enjoys taking classes through Walnut Creek Recreation, especially ones that involve being on stage. But what Alice loves most is gathering people at her home for dinner. “Cooking is my passion,” says Alice. “My Italian roots keep me connected to my love of cooking. I think it is just in my genes to cook as if I was cooking for 100 people at a time. My recipes will be passed down to my grandchildren, and it brings me incredible joy to look around and see everyone enjoying a meal together.”

The Mayos have 10 grandchildren, ranging in age from 31 to 15.

They enjoy spending time with all of them. “The Fourth of July is the biggest gathering for our whole family at Lake Tahoe. We go crazy celebrating our wonderful country,” says Alice. They feel fortunate to own a lake front home at Tavern Shores where their children and

now their grandchildren spend many wonderful summer days.

Winter time has found Bob teaching many of them to snow ski as well.

Bob continues to meet with other retired physicians for Continued Medical Education at John Muir Medical Center. They enjoy their neighborhood, especially all the Bob is awarded Pacific young people who live nearby. “Although Bob and I are up Swimmer of the Year there in age, living in a mostly young neighborhood, we find the neighborhood lovely and quiet. It is a joy to hear the sound of teenagers splashing in the pool next door. The sound of teenagers having fun is important. It has been important for us to surround ourselves with young people rather than only those in our same age group. We recently hosted an event prior to the Northgate Junior Prom for 30 high school students. It was a joy to meet these extremely polite teenagers,� says Alice.

The health and well-being of our community is top of mind in everything the Mayos do, and Northgate has benefited from their many contributions for 56 years.

BLOW UP II explores the imaginative ways that artists use air as a tool for creating large-scale sculpture and includes imagery that is figurative and abstract. Accessible, yet rich with meaning, these pieces use perception of space to open a dialogue about pop culture and social norms. Bringing the best in foreign and independent film making to Walnut Creek Submitted by John Bennison

N

ow in its sixth year, Walnut Creek’s Mountain Shadow Film Society is thriving; bring the best in foreign and independent film making to our community.

When Cine-Arts left Pleasant Hill in June, 2013, with the demolition of the old Dome theatre, cinema lovers in the Walnut Creek area lost the opportunity to see great foreign, independent and short films without trekking to Berkeley or San Francisco’s commercial theaters.

In January, 2014, Mountain Shadow Film Society was launched as the new alternative! The enthusiastic response in our community has been tremendous. In the first five years, attendance has grown, adding an additional monthly screening each year. In 2019, there are now over 550 members.

For the 2019 Season, the five screenings include one Friday night show, two Saturday matinees, and two Saturday evening shows. Shows are held in the Oak View Room (theater) of the downtown Walnut Creek Library. Each show includes a first-run foreign or independent feature film that is otherwise unavailable in our locale; often along with an award-winning short film (like the old cartoons), a brief introduction

with film review, and optional follow-up discussion for those interested.

Periodically, filmmakers present their work in person or via video chat.

While membership provides additional benefits, a limited number of $12 general admission tickets are available on a first-come basis for each show. General admission tickets are sold on a first-come basis, beginning 30 minutes before show times, and some shows occasionally sell out.

As a non-profit arts-education organization, Mountain Shadow is also committed to supporting aspiring filmmakers. An Annual Short Film Competition is held each September. Last year, a volunteer Jury selected ten Finalists from all over the country were selected from over 640 submissions to present their work in person for audience cash awards.

This year’s Competition is set for the weekend of Sept. 20-21.

B

eing involved in Northgate Leadership is a decision I am glad to have made.

I’ve been involved with Leadership programs since 5th grade. I’ve always been motivated to do leadership or similar programs for the many positives that they offer, as well as the constant inspiration and encouragement from my mom. From involving yourself in the community to getting a better outlook on life, the experiences that I’ve gotten to participate in have made me better as a person. There is so much positivity that comes with the Leadership Class; you always feel welcomed when you walk through that door.

One of the best benefits is the opportunity to volunteer at events with your friends, like the walk for St. Jude at the San Francisco Zoo. Another meaningful one would be going down to Glide in San Francisco to help out at the soup kitchens.

Even if this doesn’t intrigue you, what has motivated me most is the opportunities to put myself out there, to push out of my comfort zone. In Leadership class we have many opportunities to plan our own events, to meet new people, to give speeches, to make an impact in our community.

This past year here are a few of the events from our leadership team: •

Attended an annual leadership conference in Disneyland

The Concord Exchange (an event to exchange ideas with other leadership classes within the district where we learn about how we can remove biases and promote inclusivity.

In summary, Leadership gives you a lot of wonderful and fun opportunities to engage with the community and people around you. It’s an experience that can give you a new perspective and help you make an impact on the world. It is a bonding class with lots of positivity, and I look forward to the years to come.

A New Treatment Option for Urinary Incontinence

D

o you leak urine when you cough, sneeze, laugh, or engage in sports activities? Do you need to go to the bathroom often? Do you refrain from intimacy out of fear of insecurity? If you answered “yes,” you are probably suffering from urinary incontinence.

Urinary incontinence is the involuntary loss of urine. Stress incontinence involves urine leakage when there is increased intraabdominal pressure, for example, when coughing, sneezing, laughing, or even exercising. This is due to deconditioned pelvic floor muscles as a result of the normal aging process, childbirth, or menopause.

Urge incontinence, also known as “overactive bladder,” is characterized by a strong urge to void and difficulty holding your urine. Some women have a combination of both types of incontinence symptoms.

This is called mixed incontinence. In both types of incontinence, patients are not able to contract the pelvic floor muscles properly due to the muscle weakness.

The first line treatment for urinary incontinence is the pelvic floor muscle exercise called “Kegels.” Many of you are

likely familiar with them. They can be effective for incontinence, but unfortunately for many women they are not. Many women must resort to medications with side effects or invasive surgical procedures.

Now there is a new treatment option available to effectively treat urinary incontinence called BTL EMSELLA. BTL EMSELLA uses electromagnetic energy to cause deep pelvic floor muscle stimulation.

Ancestry.com now available FREE through the library

he Contra Costa County Library System has a brand new database for you to enjoy, ANCESTRY.COM! I’m sure that you have all seen the commercials for Ancestry.com, and now you can access it with your library card! There are a few things that you need to know about the Library’s subscription, though. The first is that the database is only available at one of your branch libraries. You can use one of the Library’s computers, or you can bring in your own laptop and log into the Library’s free wireless network, but the link to Ancestry won’t work unless you’re at the library. The next thing that you need to know is that while the Library’s subscription entitles you to their research databases, you’ll need to have your own family tree software (or a paper and pen), you can’t use their family tree software.

So, what does that mean? That means that you can freely search Ancestry’s 9000 databases, you have access to Ancestry’s downloadable charts and forms to better organize your research, you can use Ancestry’s message boards to talk with people with the same interests, you can even download documents and photos.

It is a really exciting tool. I know because I’ve done it. I searched out some family names that were three generations back, found the address where they lived, found from which country they came from. I even saw the Marriage License Index page where I found

my great grandparents marriage license! And then, using the address I found, I used Google to see what is now where my family’s home was over 100 years ago (It’s still a row house. Outside of a fresh coat of paint in the 80’s, it doesn’t look like it has changed much). All of this made me feel a little bit closer to my family. If you would like to use Ancestry.com, come in to any of the library branches and settle in for a fascinating experience. If you have any questions, just ask us at the Reference Desk. Regional Park at Concord Naval Weapons Station Reaches Major Milestone Submitted by Dave Mason

fter more than 20 years of community support and involvement, the East Bay Regional Park District has accepted 2,216 acres of former Concord Naval Weapons Station land from the U.S. Navy for a future regional park. An additional 327 acres are set to transfer to the Park District at a later date.

“Conveyance of the property to the Park District is the culmination of a decades-long community effort,” said Beverly Lane, who has represented Concord on the East Bay Regional Park District board since 1994. “This is a proud moment for the Park District and shows the great power of persistence and working together with the community.

“The U.S. Navy, National Park Service, City of Concord, and Save Mount Diablo have been tremendous partners in this effort,” added Lane.

On July 2, 2019, the East Bay Regional Park District Board of Directors unanimously approved accepting the land from the U.S. Navy. The board action authorizes the Park District to accept conveyance of the property and fee title ownership. Transfer of ownership to the Park District is expected to take six months.

“This is a great day for the Park District and East Bay residents,” said East Bay Regional Park District General Manager Robert Doyle. “The public will have access to great future park amenities, including a visitor center, staging areas, access points, and miles of recreational trails for hiking, biking, and nature viewing.”

“Park development is expected to take several years and will require significant financial resources. There is no timetable on development,” added Doyle. “With this new land, we will have a regional park that is larger than Tilden Park, that is protected for future generations forever.”
