Meet the Mettlers:
Making Northgate a better place By Kara Navolio, Resident since 1991
G
eoff and Faye Mettler share a deep love for their neighborhood and the Northgate community. This love is demonstrated by their extensive volunteerism and connections they’ve made over the years. Anyone who is a fan of Northgate High School sports or the Rancho San Miguel Swim Team (RSM) is sure to recognize Geoff’s voice. He has been the announcer for RSM for 15 years, continuing even after his kids grew up and left home. He is also the voice for the Walnut Creek All-City Swim Meet and Northgate football and wrestling. Geoff, who is an independent financial advisor and a plan fiduciary for corporate retirement plans, also has served on the board at RSM and coached youth baseball, basketball, soccer and wrestling. Faye, who has her Master’s in Clinical Psychology and is the Program Director for the nonprofit ARM of Care, has served on countless committees and boards including RSM, RSMA, Walnut Acres PFA, Foothill PFC, and Northgate PFC and Athletic Boosters. She is currently serving on the committee for Walnut Creek’s Community Service Day, which is held in October each year and encourages all city residents to volunteer for a day. As Faye says, “A sense of community starts with involvement; so
Geoff and Faye met in Hawaii. Faye, who is from Alberta Canada, was on a vacation visiting a friend in Hawaii, and Geoff was stationed at Hickam Air Force Base. After a two-year long-distance relationship, they married in 1991 continuing to live in Hawaii until Geoff was honorably discharged from the Air Force. In 1998 they purchased their first home in the Rancho San Miguel neighborhood. Growing up, Kassi and Gage spent many hours at Heather Farm Park, time at Rancho San Miguel Swim Club, and cherish fond memories of playing late night games of kick the can or four-square tournaments with other kids in the neighborhood. Though no longer building a haunted house in their own front yard, the enthusiasm of Halloween activities in the neighborhood continues today. And what do you do with a frozen t-shirt, easily answered by the Mettler family as they have been regular participants of the neighborhood Labor Day block party, now sponsored by RSMA. Geoff is a long-time participant in Sunday night softball at Heather Farms (go Polar Bears!). And Faye is a frequent patron of the many canal and hiking trails. “There is never a shortage of things to do, and the people who choose to live in this

through volunteering and life-long bonds become one of things we cherish most.
neighborhood all seem to share that same appreciation,” says Faye, to which Gage quickly added humorously, “The good thing growing up is that everyone knows you; the bad thing as you get older is that everyone knows you.” Faye shares, “For a city of 71,000, it still feels like a very tight community.” And for many who share their talents and passions, like the Mettlers do, this community is not only tight knit, but a place where friendships are made
Recently Geoff and Faye took an early evening walk with their 13-year-old Golden Retriever Nix. The sound of whistles from El Divisidero Park and the energy of enthusiastic swimmers leaving a RSM swim clinic warmed their hearts. Not only did it remind them of their own children but offered a sense of neighborhood pride. These are the welcome sounds of a neighborhood healing from a difficult two years of pandemic restrictions so, as those restrictions are lifted, get out and enjoy the sounds of a healthy and vibrant Northgate community.

How to Let Go of Past
Grievances
By Dr. Luella Jonk, PhD, IFMCP, RP, MPCC with Body Love Cafe
A
re you one of those people that is stuck in the memory of a past event, or series of events that you can’t let go of? A dismissive, detached, or anxious parental upbringing perhaps? A ‘failed’ marriage? The loss of a close family member? A long-term relationship ending? An affair? Trauma? At some point in your life, you have likely found yourself ruminating on the past. Maybe you have even experienced signs of depression due to thoughts of the past. This is no way to live out your life. Here are some suggestions to help you move from the past towards the future. It is difficult to be specific with these suggestions because they often relate to the situation at hand. Regarding the grief example above, it may mean that you need to give yourself permission to move forward. This doesn’t mean you leave cherished memories behind, it simply means you are giving yourself permission to step into the present, so others can enjoy you more. It means being an active participant in life. Realize what staying in the past does to your physical health. We all know the bi-directional pattern between the gut and the brain. The more emotional strain we endure, the deeper the physical strain on our health. Emotional strain is an endocrine disruptor. For any woman suffering with premenstrual symptoms (PMS), we can see how hormone imbalance affects our ability to regulate emotions. Weight gain is another example of what emotional pain does to us. Hair loss, eczema, acne… I could go on and on. In other words, think of what your choice of living in the past is doing to your health today.
Then ask yourself, “Is it really worth it?” Specific ways of focusing on present and future events include: Start planning future events - an upcoming birthday, a renovation, a career move, or new health routine – the goal is to focus on the future. Focus on the lessons you have learned, not where you failed. For example, regrets about how you parented your child should be instead viewed as how you are choosing to do things differently today. Set a specific time aside to ‘relive the past’ and be diligent about this. This is even more effective if you plan your ‘worry/sadness time’ at an awkward time and place. For instance, “I am going to worry or feel sad about this during 12:00 pm – 12:30 pm while I sit in the laundry room”. Chances are you have other things to do during this time, right? I hope this post helps you stay in the present. Your loved ones around you want and need you to be in the present. It is not fair for them to often experience you ‘half there’. They cherish you and want you to experience life to the fullest. Life is short and none of us know when our time is up. Make the best of it. Today seems like a good day to start. Walnut Creek Restaurant Scene
Welcome to El Charro 1947! By Alexandra Sullivan Photos courtesy of Chantel Elder, Eleakis & Elder Photography
S
itting pretty on a corner of N. Broadway in Walnut Creek lies the newest, yet classic restaurant that has captured the hearts of East Bay residents since 1947. Great food, cool atmosphere, and a cornbread that’ll knock your socks off, this is sure to be a new family favorite! El Charro began in Lafayette as a way to infuse authentic Mexican cuisine with a cool Cali influence. The original El Charro, opened by Fidel “Frank” Garcia ran for nearly 50 years before it was taken over by Laura and Dave Shields. These former employees ran El Charro with all the love and care of their predecessor and enjoyed seeing the next generation of El Charro patrons flock through their doors. Now El Charro is back for the elusive Act III under the watch of Ben Seabury and Jon Guhl. They’ve worked hard to honor the history of the original El Charro (hello Charro butter!) while bringing in fresh ideas and recipes. That aforementioned cornbread was actually a recipe that Ben’s mother cooked up throughout his childhood. Mood enhancing lights, quesabirria tacos (I really shouldn’t need to say more beyond that...they’re amazing) seating for parties of any size, and a margarita that you are guaranteed to love all come together to sing their siren song and call you through the front doors!
If you’ve visited one of Walnut Creek’s new or old favortie restaurants, please consider sending a review for our next issue. Send photos too to knavolio@bestversionmedia.com.

Local Sports Coach Zack Torrey and his daughter
Northgate Girls’ Softball
has a new coach and a promising season ahead By Kara Navolio, Resident since 1991 Long time football assistant coach and Northgate grad Zack Torrey has stepped up to the plate to coach Northgate High School’s softball program. The program has been without a consistent coaching staff, and when Torrey’s daughter wanted to play, he decided to use his previous coaching skills to help make his daughter’s high school experience even better.
the team’s sweatshirts and began other fundraisers. He got 21 girls to join the two teams. He launched social media accounts. “Northgate is such a special place. The school has a great culture and so much support from the administration,” says Torrey. He wanted to help bring that energy to girls softball. He has a very committed group of girls, very supportive parents, and a flexible employer, which all make coaching possible.
He had his work cut out for him. He had to recruit players as the previous team only had enough players to field one team, and he wanted to grow the program with JV and Varsity teams. He had to create a pre-season schedule and recruit assistant coaches. They had to raise money and get the girls ready to play. Torrey was a member of Northgate’s 1994 football team, one of the best seasons Northgate has ever had. “It was one of those magical moments in time, where everything came together,” remembers Torrey. He put his football coaching skills to use, using a similar model. He recruited Octavia Bond, a Northgate grad who also played at UC Berkeley and now runs Field House softball training and fitness programs, to help coach. He asked his employer, the Torrey Real Estate Team, to sponsor
They are still looking for a corporate sponsor, and hope the community will come out to support the team on April 20 at Dine and Donate at Chipotle on Oak Grove Rd. We can’t wait to see what the girls will do this season. Go Broncos!

Northgate Grad Ian Villers
Northgate Girls’ Basketball
enjoys first year in the minor leagues
delivers an outstanding season
By Kara Navolio, Resident since 1991
By Kara Navolio, Resident since 1991
I
T
an Villers was a star pitcher for Northgate, graduating in 2018 and going on to pitch for the Cal Bears at UC Berkeley for three years. He was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the yearly amateur draft in 2021.
he Northgate girls’ basketball team has had an outstanding season, culminating in the NCS Division II championship game. They came in second place and qualified for the state playoffs.
The season began with a trip to Scottsdale where all the new rookies had to quarantine for 10 days in a hotel, then go through testing before they could proceed to physicals, then practicing and bonding with the other rookies. They played a short season of rookie ball, then had the winter off. So this 2022 season is his first full season in professional baseball. Although the major league players were locked out of baseball until March 10, the minor league players were allowed to begin spring training as planned. He started with a pitchers’ mini camp in February and on March 3 minor league practices began. The players take part in some activity every day, whether it’s a light day of stretching, running, going over signs and playing catch, or a more intense day of weight lifting and throwing in the bull pen. “The Giants are a great organization,” Villers says. “They take care of our arms.” Games ran from March 15 through early April, and at the conclusion of spring training each player will find out their assignment for the season. He added, “Every day you have to have your A game. But I get to wake up every day and put on a jersey and play baseball; I love it!”
Three players were named All League: First Team - Tegan Gaines (Sr), Second Team - Jaley Croy (Sr), Honorable Mention Tade Scheid (Jr). Tegan also eclipsed 1,000 points scored for her career at Northgate. Under the leadership of Coach Jim Croy, the girls’ team amassed an overall record of 22-7 and came in second place in their league at 9-3. This gave them a berth in the NCS playoffs where they won their first two playoff games earning their place in the Division II Championship game.

How to Prepare for a
Home Remodeling Project By Gordon Reese, Gordon Reese Design Build, Resident since 2012
H
ome remodeling can be a potentially stressful project, but it doesn’t have to be. Our expert tips can assist you in renovating your home the right way so you can stay focused on the big picture: a beautiful new kitchen, bathroom, or living space that you love!
How to Prepare for a Home Remodeling Project: Five Tips
1. Gather Information Design is the first step to a successful remodeling project. Houzz. com or Pinterest are great sites to get inspiration and collect images that can be shared with your design team. Dream a little as you go through images, save them with notes about what you like.
2. Remodeling Team Finding the right team to help you realize your dream remodel is vital. Select a company that not only has great reviews, but also an informative website and a process that makes sense and is easy to understand.
3. Living Remodeling Plan One of the most common problems people have during renovations is living with less room than usual. To mitigate this, be sure to have a pre-construction meeting to discuss your living remodeling plan.
If you are remodeling a kitchen, a temporary kitchen is a great solution. Having a good plan before your project starts will make your daily routine much easier!
4. Communication Communication is a key component to a successful remodeling project. Be sure the company you choose has a good project management system which should give you access to schedules, financials, important documents, daily communication and more.
5. Meetings We recommend scheduling a weekly meeting with your remodeling team. Make sure your concerns and questions are addressed in a timely manner to prevent any sleepless nights during your remodeling project.
We Are Here Are you ready to get your remodeling project started? Gordon Reese Design Build can guide you through your home renovation project every step of the way. It’s easy to book a call with a team member here, or call us at (925) 885-3770. Don’t wait, ask us about how you can kickstart your dream space today!

Join the Hope Walk on May 21 By Aileen Cameron, Cancer Survivor, CSC Member
M
y cancer journey began December 2017 following the results of an annual mammogram. I remember receiving the call from my doctor while out buying Christmas candy. She sounded like Charlie Brown’s mum after I heard the words “breast cancer.” I was advised to have a lumpectomy, but an angel on my shoulder prompted me to have a double mastectomy. I didn’t know how to navigate this new normal, thankfully my oncologist recommended Cancer Support Community (CSC). In CSC I found a family who had walked the cancer path and was my guide in those scary early days. They spoke the language and shared their inspirational stories.
I continue classes at CSC to stay informed on nutrition, exercise, and planning for my future. The free emotional support and educational programs have helped me and my family make informed lifesaving decisions and embrace our new normal. To give back this year, I am proud to lead the CSC Hope Walk on May 21st as the event chairperson. I remember my first Hope Walk 6-weeks post-surgery. I felt invincible as we proudly walked through Heather Farm Park. I hope you’ll join me in walking and supporting CSC. Learn more at hopewalkbayarea.net. You can also choose to join the virtual Hope Walk Week by walking anytime between May 15 and May 21. For information visit: www.cancersupport.net

What to Expect on Your
2021 Tax Return
By Chris J. Held, CFP®, CRPS®, Element Wealth Management
T
he federal government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact individual income tax returns, from the suspension of federal student loan interest to expanded child tax credits. For many taxpayers, this may mean your 2021 return may look a bit different from last year’s tax return. For some, this may mean a smaller refund or a higher tax rate. Here is some information about how certain factors may result in a lower federal income tax refund or affect your taxes due.
oN TaxWaiveronUnemptoymentenefits B In March 2021, Congress passed the American Rescue Plan Act, which waived federal income tax on up to $10,200 of unemployment benefits paid per individual in 2020.1. However, no unemployment tax breaks have passed since then. This lack of a tax waiver means that the approximately 25 million Americans who received unemployment benefits in 2021 and did not have federal income tax withheld (or pay estimated taxes) may receive a smaller refund than before.
Advanced Child Tax Credits May Lower Refunds If you have a child under the age of 17 and did not opt-out of the $250 or $300 per month per child advance payments beginning in June 2021, there is a lower income tax refund possible to compensate for these advanced child tax credits payments.2 The overall child tax credit was higher than in prior years (at $3,600 per child age five and under and $3,000 per child age six and over). However, advancing half the overall credit over the last half of 2021 means that taxpayers may now get proportionally less when they file their tax returns.
and state tax benefits that may help manage your tax bill or boost your refund. 1 https://www.cnbc.com/2022/01/03/no-a-tax-break-on2021-unemployment-benefits-isnt-available.html 2 https://www.forbes.com/sites/robertfarrington/2021/11/22/ americans-should-be-prepared-for-a-smaller-tax-refund-next-year/?sh=4fd19fd1c718 This information is not intended as authoritative guidance or tax advice. No Federal Student Loan Interest In 2021 For more than a decade, taxpayers who pay interest in federal student loans have been able to deduct up to $2,500 in interest paid. But with the suspension of interest on federal student loans from March 2020 through May 2022, many taxpayers will not have any student loan interest to deduct for 2021.

Those With Defaulted Student Loans Could Have Refunds Seized Along with the moratorium on student loan payments and interest charges, the federal government stayed tax refund offsets—and all collection activity—for defaulted federal student loans. This moratorium meant that those whose loans were in default could not have their tax refunds garnished by the IRS during the stay period. The moratorium expires on January 31, 2022. This expiration means those who file a tax return early—and receive a refund on or after Feb. 1—could see this refund garnished and put toward their overall loan balance and penalties. For taxpayers in this situation, it might be worth investigating your options to get your loans out of defaulted status before filing your 2021 tax return.
