Welcome We launch into 2018 with a programme that reflects the quality and diversity of UK dance, alongside opportunities to see future generations of dancers in action.

Highlights include innovative touring companies in productions that blend dance genres from across the African diaspora, including a return visit from the popular ACE dance and music with their exhilarating production TEN, and Uchenna Dance’s funny and uplifting The Head Wrap Diaries.

In works specifically for younger children and families, Moxie Brawl welcome us into their Windibops laboratory and Anatomical invite us to dance and draw on stage in The Doodle Dance Show – both for age 4 years and upwards.

See future dance artists in the making as postgraduate companies, including NSCD’s VERVE, perform new works by international choreographers and NSCD undergraduates showcase their talent in the Student Showcase and Graduation performances.

All I Wanted Was a Doll Sunday 11 February 7pm £7 (£5) Box Office: 0113 219 3018 Book Online: rileytheatre.com A play by award-winning Leeds playwright Brian Daniels, directed by Dr Bernie Byrnes Join us as we celebrate Riley Theatre’s Jewish heritage as a former working synagogue with this community play, a story of the earlier Jewish immigrants to Leeds.

It wasn’t an easy journey, there were many challenges on the way, challenges faced by all immigrant communities. This play, commissioned by the Leeds Jewish Welfare Board to commemorate their 140th anniversary year (2018), recreates some very human stories to help make a community stronger.

A lively post-show discussion will follow the performance, which is open to all.

Elevations Student Showcase

This spin-off of Elevations’ main variety show at Carriageworks Theatre enables younger members of the academy to steal the spotlight for one day only. There will be four mini displays of work, each performed by different students.

For the first time, students from Dresden will attend Northern School of Contemporary Dance for one week, to train and rehearse together.

This will culminate in Meet the Artist, a 60-minute performance where students, selected alumni and apprentices will share their current repertoire — from classical variations to contemporary choreographies. The artists will present their wide range of skills and virtuosities whilst connecting with the public through open discussions and an improvisation led by the audience. palucca.eu

Uchenna Dance

The Head Wrap Diaries Hair – worn long, worn short, worn wavy or in braids – is the subject of The Head Wrap Diaries, a funny and uplifting dance theatre show by London-based company Uchenna Dance. Blending club styles House, Waacking and Vogue with African and Contemporary Dance, this production explores community, heritage, womanhood, friendship, and most importantly, hair!

The Head Wrap Diaries is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, part of the Rural Touring Dance Initiative (RTDI) 2017-18 season.

Dancing Times

Collaborative Arts Week Discover art in unlikely places.

Collaborative Arts is a micro-festival of immersive performances and screenings from third year students at Northern School of Contemporary Dance, in collaboration with a variety of artists and venues in the City.

Led by award-winning Australian choreographer Jane McKernan, students will give free reign to their imaginations, producing work with creatives from overlapping artistic disciplines. Previous years have included submerged dancers and choristers at Leeds’ Bramley Baths, an ode to caffeine at a local coffee shop and immersive cinema experiences.
