Welcome back for a new year of dance. This season we’re delighted to welcome back three professional companies with close ties to Leeds, having been founded by artists who trained here at NSCD – Extended Play, Akram Khan Company and Company Chameleon. Spring / Summer at Riley Theatre also looks to the next generation of talent. In Northern Connections we spotlight three up-and-coming choreographers and in VERVE, 14 global dancers on the cusp of their professional careers perform 3 distinct works by established international artists. Postgraduate companies Area Jeune Ballet, Emergence and The Collective join the programme to share their newly-commissioned works. Community Dance Platform and our End of Year performances celebrate the rich diversity of dance present in our communities, both within and outside formal education. With varied themes, ideas and approaches across the season, one common thread is obvious throughout – the importance of human connection. I hope you enjoy.

Extended Play DONUTS Three friends are getting ready for a night out. The music is intoxicating, they start to dance. It’s so good, they might stay a little longer…

Inspired by classic sitcoms of the 90s & 00s, DONUTS follows a group of individuals as their friendship evolves over time. Hypnotic, playful and bursting with precision and soul, this is a celebration of how music can bring people together, no matter what life throws at them.

VERVE Premiere Physically ambitious, strikingly original dance. VERVE’s 14 exceptional dancers restage Vertical Road by Akram Khan – an award-winning work by one of the world’s most renowned choreographers, and perform two bold new works by acclaimed international artists Sita Ostheimer and Alesandra Seutin.

Northern Connections Triple Bill Ones to watch. This year’s selected artists Jake Evans, Chandenie Gobardhan and John-William Watson platform the results of their choreographic residencies at Northern School of Contemporary Dance.

Akram Khan Company Chotto Xenos How does war begin? And how does it end? It depends on who is telling the story.

Inspired by Akram Khan’s award-winning full-length solo XENOS, Chotto Xenos is a captivating dance production that takes young audiences back in time, exploring the often forgotten and untold stories of World War I colonial soldiers in order to shine a light on our present and future.

Emergence Mixed Bill Emergence returns with four adrenaline-fuelled works by Gosia Mielech, Kevin Finnan, Vidya Patel and Joss Arnott.
Wed 4 May
Gaga choreographer Gosia Mielech’s raw, authentic and passionate piece explores the idea of totality and what it means to live life in a total way. Kevin Finnan, Artistic Director of Motionhouse presents a physically-charged work, capturing the virtuosity of the dancers. Exploring Kathak-influenced movement and rhythms, Vidya Patel has collaborated with the dancers to develop a hybrid movement language. Joss Arnott completes the bill with Wild Shadows, an exhilarating, technical work featuring a cinematic music score and striking lighting.

Company Chameleon The Shadow A gripping, dark and psychological thriller told through movement. Six characters and their shadow counterparts are swept into different stories, revealing inner worlds, hidden personalities, and unconscious desires.

In his first full-length work since Beauty of The Beast ( The Guardian), choreographer Anthony Missen uses an end of the world scenario and Carl Jung’s model of the psyche to explore human behaviour and our darker selves.
