Black Box Dance Company NO SEX

The work channels the unapologetic nature of Maya Angelou’s iconic poem of the same name, and the resilience of the human spirit. Pounding beats and stirring classical arias drive the journey onwards. Falling down, gathering up... we rise.
Sat 1 February 7.30pm £12 (£7) Suitable for: 12yrs+

In Jason Mabana’s NO SEX – A World of Gender, four bodies exaggerate, succumb to and fight against norms of gender and sexuality. Falling in and out of love with one another, the performers seduce and delight. With militaristic precision and tender sensitivity, NO SEX promises to provoke, entertain and stir up reflection.
Double Bill: FORECASTING / Likes
Fri 7 February 7.30pm £12 (£7) Suitable for: 13yrs+
The digital merges with the corporeal in this surreal double bill from European choreographers Giuseppe Chico/ Barbara Matijević and Núria Guiu.
Likes is a fresh choreographic look at the presence of the body in the digital age. Analysing two popular YouTube phenomena - cover dance tutorials and Yoga technique videos - artist Núria Guiu discusses the social value of a “like” in today’s networked culture.

In FORECASTING, a performer skilfully manipulates a laptop playing a reel of amateur YouTube videos, carefully selected for their human scale. The screen becomes a site for the intersection between body and image; a dizzying, hybrid experience.
IRL? - a symposium Meet the artists in FORECASTING/Likes as they consider the impact of social networks on identity and creativity. With workshops and research presentations from European creator/performers including Núria Guiu (Spain), Barbara Matijević (Croatia), and a special commission by regional artist Lydia Cottrell. IRL? (In Real Life) is hosted by Yorkshire Dance and supported by Leeds Dance Partnership.
