Welcome

Never taken a dance class but would like to learn something new? Or haven’t danced for a long time and would like to get back into it? Perhaps you are an avid dancer looking for more opportunities?

Whether you would like to dance as a hobby, for fitness, or if you are looking to develop your skills as a dancer, look no further as Northern School of Contemporary Dance has so much to offer children, young people and adults.

Meet the Team Hello, I am Tracy Witney – Head of Learning & Participation, and I oversee all of the outreach programmes at NSCD. I am very proud of the classes and courses we offer both inside and outside of our building. Our participants unanimously agree that as well as improving their dance skills, our classes are a great way to socialise and make new friends.

Our Learning & Participation team consists of two other full-time members and over 15 freelance tutors / artists that work with us on a regular basis.

Rose Chadwick is our Centre for Advanced Training (CAT) Programme Leader. Rose teaches on the CAT programme and for our Adult Improvers/ Advanced Technique class on a Tuesday. She is also the driving force in 2

the delivery of our secondary schools workshop programme.

Tom Bowes is our Learning & Participation Coordinator. If you want to enrol, ask questions about classes, courses and projects, or generally have a chat about dance opportunities with Learning & Participation, then Tom is your man. Tom also runs our NSCD Youth Company and is a tutor on the CAT programme.

Our team of freelance tutors are all highly trained dance artists who have expertise in their field. We hope you will see from our participants’ comments how we nurture an inclusive and mutuallyrespectful learning environment and provide a place for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy, engage in and learn through dance.

It just remains for me to say a massive thank you to all our participants who gave their feedback last year and helped shape this brochure and to hopefully welcome you to NSCD during 2017/18.

It’s just so exciting coming through the doors of NSCD each week! It’s a conservatoire and I can’t believe I get to dance here! What I also love is the buzzing atmosphere- there are always full-time students around practising moves and chatting and the whole place is really alive and exciting.

It’s also genuinely welcoming and you simply feel NSCD is somewhere where everyone, at whatever level, loves dancing.

Saturday School is a series of classes for children aged 5–12 years. Children on our Saturday School have fun, develop confidence and channel energy into creativity.

Saturday School classes are split into the following levels:

The classes introduce children to contemporary dance techniques and creative work. Over the year the children contribute creatively to work that will be performed in the Learning & Participation Annual Showcase in June at Riley Theatre, NSCD’s on-site contemporary dance performance venue.

Tell us about your child’s involvement in NSCD’s dance classes?

Why did you choose NSCD?

YOUTH CLASSES

Youth classes Youth classes at NSCD are energetic, creative and provide an enjoyable way for 12-18 year olds to increase fitness, dance technique and confidence under the guidance of specialist teachers.

We currently offer the following classes: CONTEMPORARY TECHNIQUE Tuesday 6.15–7.45pm Price: Weekly £4 / Termly £40 Led by Gee Goodison and accompanied by a live musician, this fast-paced class is ideal for any young person looking to enhance their contemporary dance technique.

This class requires some previous dance experience and is a good introduction for those thinking of auditioning for NSCD’s Centre for Advanced Training (see page 22) NSCD YOUTH DANCE COMPANY Thursday 6.15–7.45pm Price: Weekly £4 / Termly: £40 Led by Tom Bowes, the NSCD Youth Dance Company is suitable for all young dancers who wish to develop their creativity and have fun.

Each term the group creates a new piece to be performed at NSCD’s Riley Theatre.

Students work individually and as part of a team under Tom’s guidance, exploring different movement ideas and developing their own choreography including partner work and group lifts.

How old are you, and what are you currently studying?

I am seventeen and currently working towards my A Levels. I study Politics, Psychology, Drama & Theatre Studies and Performing Arts. On Tuesday nights I attend the Youth Technique classes to improve my skills and abilities as a dancer.

Why do you come to NSCD each week?

To improve and develop my dancing abilities, I’ve always been weaker in technique and for a long time was intimidated by it so I recently returned to the Youth Technique class to get stronger and more confident.

What is your weekly class like?

The Youth Technique classes are hard work and challenging but also I was eight when I first joined NSCD in very rewarding. The class focuses on their Saturday School. I enjoyed spending developing the skills needed to improve ages in my room as a contemporary boogying to the radio I come out of each class dancer. YOUTH CLASSES

What is it like dancing with the other participants in the class?

Very friendly and encouraging, I have always found NSCD tutors to be welcoming and approachable. The longer the period you’ve been part of their class, the more of an idea they get of what your abilities are: where your strengths lie and what they can help you improve on. They always make sure to challenge you but also encourage you to work to the best of your ability.

Adult classes Adult classes at NSCD (18+ years) are an enjoyable way to increase fitness, strength and flexibility. The classes help to improve dance technique and creativity, and are led by specialist teachers in a professional, friendly environment.

IMPROVERS/ADVANCED CONTEMPORARY TECHNIQUE

BEGINNERS CONTEMPORARY TECHNIQUE

Led by Rose Chadwick and accompanied by a live musician, this class is designed for adults who have previous dance experience. The course involves a range of contemporary dance techniques to develop skills such as movement memory, co-ordination, strength, fitness and flexibility. The class is fast-paced and involves challenging and physical movement concepts.

Wednesday 6.30–8pm £55 per 10 week term (£50 concessions) This class is for those who want to learn contemporary dance technique for the first time or revisit previous knowledge at an inclusive pace. Class tutors offer step by step guidance on a range of movements which help to improve postural alignment, flexibility and strength.

Open to adults of all ages and ability, this class will boost your confidence, increase fitness and is a great way to have fun and meet new people.

Louisa’s beginners class is just perfect for beginners like me who wish to actually learn and explore the basics of contemporary dance.

ADULT CLASSES

All the tutors I’ve had at NSCD have put everything into every class - they really want students to succeed and encourage them to let go of their inhibitions (which can be difficult in an adult dance class!) and really commit to dancing and being in the moment.

ADULT CLASSES

TECHNIQUE CHOREOGRAPHY & PERFORMANCE

This class is for those who have previous dance experience, want a challenge and are committed to working towards a performance.

The class consists of one hour contemporary dance technique accompanied by a live musician, followed by one hour choreography/creative work. Participants work collaboratively with Donald Edwards to create works that are performed each term at NSCD’s Riley Theatre.

I get the opportunity to support other dancers, but also be supported by more experienced dancers. The whole class is really collaborative.

Louise Wisson (Technique Choreography & Performance participant) CREATIVE DANCE Wednesday 6.30–8pm Free This course gives adults with learning disabilities and their carers the opportunity to share and develop creative skills through participation in dance workshops. This session is led

by Hayley Graham and is free of charge. The group performs every term at NSCD’s Riley Theatre.

ZUMBA Monday 7.30-8.30pm and Thursday 6.30–7.30pm £5 per week pay as you go.

Zumba is an easy-to-follow, calorie-burning dance fitness class. Delivered by De-Napoli Clarke, the class involves dance and aerobic elements and incorporates hip-hop, soca, samba, salsa, merengue, mambo and martial arts. This class is guaranteed to make you sweat!

Centre for Advanced Training (13 - 17 years)

Northern School of Contemporary Dance’s, Centre for Advanced Training (CAT) is part of a national intensive dance programme for 13-17 year olds who display exceptional potential and passion for dance.

The scheme is devised to prepare young dancers for full-time dance training at university or specialist conservatoire level. Our scheme includes five key areas: •

Contemporary and Ballet Techniques

Creative dance and choreography

•

Performance

•

Dancers’ health and wellbeing

•

Cultural activities such as theatre trips

The curriculum is intended to give students a strong basic grounding in technical and creative skills, as well as an introduction to the wider dance profession. Our students attend a minimum of eight hours per week outside of school.

This pre-vocational training scheme is funded by the Department for Education and offers gifted and talented young people the opportunity to access high-quality dance training whilst staying in full-time education and living at home. Means-tested grants are available to make the scheme accessible to all young people.

The people were friendly and enthusiastic and it really motivated me to want to come to the school. I loved watching current CAT students in class; they were working hard and looked so happy to be there.

Interested in Centre for Advanced Training (CAT)?

Entry on to the scheme is through audition only and there are two stages to the process: 1. Attend an Open Day. CAT Open Days allow potential students to learn more about the scheme and gain more technical and creative experience. Book your place on an Open Day by completing an online form at nscd.ac.uk/cat 2. During the Open Day, dancers may be selected to attend a final audition. Successful auditionees from this round will be offered a coveted place on the NSCD CAT scheme.

Experience Previous dance experience is not necessary as we are looking for young people with enthusiasm, potential and commitment to training as a contemporary dancer.

‘Spotted’ Workshops For schools, colleges, youth and dance groups.

Do you work with enthusiastic and motivated young people aged 13-17 with potential and an interest in dance?

Why not host one of our workshops for your students? A dance artist from NSCD will come to you and deliver a 2 hour workshop based on contemporary dance technique and choreography.

Talented students from the workshop will be invited to attend an Open Day at NSCD with the view to potentially being selected to audition for the scheme. No dance experience required.

Workshops & Courses Throughout the year, the Learning & Participation team offers workshops and courses on-site at NSCD, in our local community and further afield across Yorkshire. Some of these are listed here but others happen throughout the year when exciting opportunities arise.

Centre for Advanced Training We offer free ‘Spotted’ workshops to secondary schools, colleges and youth groups across Yorkshire between October and March for students aged 13 – 17 to spot talent for our Centre for Advanced Training scheme. See page 24 for more information or visit nscd.ac.uk/cat.

Verve Tour Workshops NSCD’s postgraduate performance company VERVE also offers workshops to secondary schools and colleges during the course of their Spring tour. These workshops are based on current works from the tour and include a warm up, repertory and creative task supported with a resource pack for teachers.

Easter Course Saturday 7 & Sunday 8 April A short weekend intensive led by professional dancers for adults with some movement experience, exploring technique, contact and partner work, choreography and improvisation. Ideal for adult class attendees wanting to develop their confidence and dance experience further.

Bespoke Workshop Packages The Learning & Participation team can also offer bespoke workshop packages across the Yorkshire region. These are designed to meet your project objectives, budget and time requirements, and can range from single workshops to one-off projects or longer-term programmes.

If you are a school, the workshops can be linked to the curriculum and to specific topics – we have recently delivered workshops integrating Dance and Science for Primary Schools, supported Arts Week activities, delivered GCSE dance choreography workshops and arranged visits to Riley Theatre to watch our Access, Undergraduate and Postgraduate dance students perform.

An energetic, fun and challenging experience for young dancers aged 1218 years (open-level) and adults aged 18+ (advanced level, including dance students and graduates).

The NSCD Summer School features a daily contemporary dance technique class, followed by an afternoon working with a professional choreographer to create a piece.

Find Us

NSCD is easily accessible from Leeds City Centre.

Bus: Regular services 2, 3, 3A, 48 from Leeds City Centre (stand V4 opposite Kirkgate Market or Vicar Lane) to Chapeltown Road Recreation Ground (directly outside NSCD).

Car: Free parking is available. NSCD is approximately a five minute drive from Leeds city centre, just beyond the Sheepscar Interchange.
