Green Valley 4-H Report

Hello this is Katelynn Buckert from the Green Valley 4-H Club.

In May everyone has been doing a lot with their animals to get ready for show. You can tell just how excited everyone is with how hard they have been working. From leading to grooming we are putting our hearts into it so our animal is in the best shape they can be in.

The shows will be starting at 9am, Friends of 4-H Supper at 4pm, and the sale will be at 5pm Sunday in the VJV auction market. Everyone is welcome!

Dan Przybylski Have

R0011923457 THANKYOUFOR RECYCLINGTHIS NEWSPAPER.

From June 9th to the 11th we will be doing hove trimming and a mini show. Have to have our animals looking their best. For our show this year we are doing things a little differently. We will be showing at the Dawson Creek Exhibition Grounds on July 15th and 16th.

Peace Region Forage Seed Association’s summer pest project

Are you worried about pests and bad insects in your crops? Well then, the Prairie Pest Monitoring Network may be able to help you out.

The Prairie Pest Monitoring Network, also known as the PPMN, is a joint effort by federal researchers and provincial entomologists to give weekly updates to anyone, on agricultural pests in Western Canada. Since first taking shape in 1997, the PPMN has been implementing protocols and monitoring pests that affect our crops while factoring in climate, weather, agronomic practices, and natural enemies.

The PPMN uses a combination of trapping, scouting, and field surveys to monitor the insect populations and assess the risk of pest damage to crops. Risk maps are created using GIS maps, from on ground pest monitoring to generate forecasts, and warning maps. Current examples of pest risk maps available include Bertha Armyworm, Pea Leaf Weevil, and Wheat Midge.

The website also offers links to field guides available to download in French and English to help identify and understand specific pests in fields, along with how to manage them. The network promotes the use of best management practice by also providing information on beneficial bugs and the many forms of pest control through integrated pest management, IPM in short.

Also provided by the PPMN is the canola scouting chart, which is specifically used for canola pests, it displays the scouting times for each specific pest that can affect each staging of canola. Currently, the chart suggests scouting for Flea Beetle, Cutworm, Leafhopper and Diamondback Moth, with Lygus, and Grasshoppers soon to come potentially.

The PPMN can be an important tool for pest management across the Canadian Prairies, by providing producers with a wide variety of accurate and punctual information. The website can perhaps help to improve best management

practices and increase environmental stewardship through optimizing integrated pest management practice.

Assessing the allelopathic effect of cover

Allelopathy is the direct or indirect impact on plant individuals, whether they belong or not to the same species. Established as substances composed of secondary metabolites, allelopathy can a) affect growth and yield of another plant and b) develop autotoxicity, where plant individuals’ secrete chemicals that prevent propagation and development of seedlings of same species growth.

Allelopathy can be used as a strategic tool to mitigate chemical weed management. Residues of allelopathic cover crops not only provide benefits to the soil but also help to reduce weed populations during their growth and likely for the cash crops seeded in the season thereafter. This project was divided into two years. The first year, four crops where chosen based on their allelopathic properties, availability and popularity among growers. Crops such as rye (Secale cereale L.), annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.), hairy vetch (Vicia villosa L.) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L) have been shown to limit or reduce the growth of other plant species. In this experiment weeds were surveyed every two weeks (sixteen weeks total) after cover crop mix seeding to observe if allelopathic effects changed according to cover crop species or cover crop mixes. At the end of the season, plots were either rollercrimped or incorporated. The following growing season (second year), canola, field pea, wheat was sown perpendicular to the direction of these plots to observe if weed populations are still suppressed by the allelopathic effects of the cover crops and their mixes. A control plot is included where no crop is sown. Further, it was also assessed whether roller-crimping and incorporation impact weed suppression along with allelopathy.

Cover crop seeding, roller crimping and incorporation (First year)

Weed individuals (P<0.0001) and weed species (P<0.0001) changed through the repeated measured conducted at each plot every two weeks. Number of individuals was significantly reduced after the eighth week and further. Number of species on the other hand increased in the same period and dropping close to cover crop kill (roller crimping or incorporation). Cover crop species and cover crop mixes evaluated had no effect (P=0.9773 and P= 0.9038 for either weed individuals and weed species respectively). There was no effect from cover crop species (P=0.9773 and P=0.9038 for individual and species number respectively) or cover crop kill method.

Cash crop seeding and harvest (Second year)

Only two weed surveys were conducted. This was because the trial was sown later in the growing season. Weeds in the second weed survey were very mature and outcompeting the cash crops. Differences however were found among these two readings. An interaction between crop and cover crop over time impacts weed species (P=0.0297). Number of species increased six times more in the second weed survey compared to the first. Number of species was lowered in the first survey in plots sown to rye and hairy vetch and unseeded the consequent year compared to plots seeded to sunflower, followed by unseeded splitplots. Number of species is lower in the second weed survey is lower in several plots and split plots. Thus, canola and unseeded split plots previously sown to annual ryegrass and plots seeded to combinations of annual ryegrass with hairy vetch, wheat previously seeded to rye, sunflower and its combination, and pea split plots previously seeded to sunflower and mixes of rye with hairy vetch reported the lowest number of species compared to pea split plots previously seeded to mixes of annual ryegrass and sunflower. Number of individuals also decreased in the second weed survey compared to the first (P=0.0014) and numbers were different according to cover crop species (P=0.0142). As such, less individuals were found in areas seeded to rye compared to areas sown to mixes of sunflower with hairy vetch.

Cover crop termination method as no impact on weed species and number. Most of the impact on weeds can be attributed to the cover crop and subsequently to the cash crop seeded the following year. Rye has been shown to be extremely powerful in deterring other plant species. Previous literature does indicate that rye can reduce the presence of other weeds and even encourage the growth of some crops such as sunflower. This explains why sunflower with rye mixes reported some of the lowest numbers of species and number of individuals. Likewise, annual ryegrass produces copious biomass smother other weeds seedlings and prevent them from gathering sunlight. Moreover,

A10 The Northern Horizon, June 23, 2023

cover crops on a crop rotation

presence of mixes rather than single cover crops was more effective in decreasing weed species and number. However, this was dependant on the species involved in the cover crop mix. This is congruent with results found in mixes of rye with sunflower and annual ryegrass with hairy vetch compared to mixes of sunflower with either annual ryegrass or hairy vetch.

Cover crops terminated through roller crimping favoured wheat (P=0.0012) and canola (P=0.0147) yield more than cover crop incorporation. A cover crop residue mat left from the previous season may have contributed to greater carbon and nitrogen availability and hence allowed these cash crops to get a head start over their individual counter parts seeded on incorporated plots. Among all cash crops, canola (P=0.0436) was affected by the presence of cover crop species previously seeded. Results showed that yield was greater from canola subsequently seeded to annual ryegrass, mixes of annual ryegrass and hairy vetch and sunflower compared to mixes of sunflower and hairy vetch. It is possible there might be an antagonistic effect from these three species when sown in the same area. Numbers indicated that either hairy vetch or sunflower can be seeded previously, but not in the same cover crop mixture.

Overall, when cover crops were seeded, there was an overall decline in weeds populations from all treatments and mixtures but no significant effects from either cover crop species. When cash crops were seeded, cover crop species seeded the year prior affected weeds species and number and cash crop species only affected weed species, this was regardless of cover crop termination method. Our show that allelopathy can be used as another tool for weed management. Both cover crops and cash crops seeding rates may need refinement to improve more weed management and increase crop yield.

Silver Willow 4-H Report

Hello everyone, this is Ella Kelly writing to you from the Silver Willow 4-H Club.

Our club has been getting ready for the Achievement Days coming up. We have been practicing leading animals and bathing them. Unfortunately we are not able to use the fall fair grounds so our achievement days have been moved to July 15th and 16th. Our steers will be selling live as well as online at VJV Auction in Dawson Creek.

We also would like to ask you to come and hang out with us for the poker ride we are hosting. You may hike, ride, or bike. The poker

ride takes place on June 11th of 2023. If you would like to come it is located at Sasquatch Valley Ranch, two kms down the Milligan Creek Road as there will be road markers. You can see Sasquatch Valley Ranch on Facebook for more detailed text Autumn at 780-257-4174. Please do not bring dogs or ATV’s if you come to the poker ride.

Remember to come to our poker ride and achievement days, and tell your friends. Thank you so much for your time to read this and have a great rest of your day! This is Ella Kelly signing off.

PLANNOWTOSECUREWINTERFEEDSUPPLIES

Have you experienced lodging in forage or cereal crops? In the past few years, Dr. Sheri Strydhorst and Calvin Yoder have been working with plant growth regulators to help producers reduce this occurrence and increase yield returns. In this weeks article we are going to discuss a little more about Growth Regulators.

Calvin Yoder, is a forage seed specialist who works with SARDA Agricultural Research and Peace Region Forage Seed Association, working specifically to strengthen brome grasses, creeping red fescue and timothy in the Peace Region with growth regulators.

Dr. Strydhorst, has been an advocate for use of growth regulators as lodging in wheat can reduce yield from 7% to a crazy 35% and decrease grade through sprouting.

in flowering and pollination. Both PGRs affect the hormone in the plant called Gibberellic acid, which is responsible for promoting cell elongation and has become the main growth regulator for use in grasses grown for seed.

But what exactly is a plant growth regulator? Plant growth regulators (PGR) is a chemical application that impacts hormone activity within the plant, not to be confused with genetically modified organisms (GMO). They work by influencing the plant to grow differently, for example, growing with a thicker stem, and reducing the height of the plant which helps keep the plant from lodging, thus making the crops easier to harvest. It has also been found to increase seed yield by an increase

There are two main types of growth regulators available for use in Canada, one of them being Chlormequat chloride (CCC) which is commonly known as Manipulator. Manipulator is an organic chloride salt and is water soluble in the plant. The second type of regulator, Trinexapac-ethyl (TE) or more commonly known as Modus. TE (Moddus) is a foliar spray used post-emergence and is translocated to the growing shoot. Moddus has been in Canada for a lesser time than the manipulator, it is the main type of growth regulator used in other parts of the world such as New Zealand.

Mr Yoder and Dr. Strydhorst have done extensive research into these tools and have both made significant impact on the agriculture industry through this information. Although new to the agriculture world, they believe that these growth regulators could forever change and shape the future of farming.

Congrats, Dean Edge!

Congratulations go out to Dean Edge, head gavel dropper at Vold Jones & Vold Auction’s operation in Rimbey, Alberta.

Dean, one of only two Canadian entrants to make it to the semifinals, recently returned from the World Livestock Auctioneer Championship (WLAC) held June 7th to 10th in Punta Gorda and Arcadia in Florida with the banner for Reserve Champion.

The semi-final portion of the auctioneering competition began with an interview where each WLAC semi-finalist had to clearly establish and demonstrate their knowledge of the livestock marketing industry. The competition then moved on to

the Arcadia Stockyard in Arcadia, Fla., where contestants sold cattle in a live auction to actual bidders present at the facility.

Will Epperly, the reigning World Livestock Auctioneer Champion was in attendance along with many other former World Livestock Auctioneer Champions who participated in the Parade of Champions.

Jacob Massey, an auctioneer from Petersburg, Tennessee was named Grand Champions at this year’s WLAC event.

Congratulations again to Dean and everyone at VJV.

Glenn’s work with and knowledge of horses is diverse. He travels extensively each year delivering horsemanship clinics across Canada, the United States, South America and Europe. Glenn leads camps at his home in Fort St. John at The Horse Ranch. For 19 consecutive years, he led the Learning Holiday Adventure High & Wild in the Northeastern Rocky Mountains – a remote location 160 kilometers from the nearest roads. Glenn was in charge of the horse program and developing 200+ herd of wild horses. This included: the breeding program, seasonal round-up, the taming/gentling, foot breaking, trimming, overall maintenance of the herd and welfare. 18 million for diagnostic services for animals

Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan announced $18 million to support Prairie Diagnostic Services in Saskatchewan over the next 5 years under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP). This investment supports the organization and the work they provide in disease diagnosis, surveillance, research and supporting animal health and welfare.

Prairie Diagnostic Services is a veterinary diagnostic laboratory located in Saskatchewan. It is a not-for-profit organization that provides comprehensive diagnostic services for animals, primarily focusing on livestock, poultry, wildlife and companion animals. They work in collaboration with governments and stakeholders to support animal health, disease surveillance and research in the province. Their collaborative approach supports the development of new diagnostic tools, vaccines

and treatment strategies that strengthen the integrity of the collective management and response to animal health and welfare needs.

Sustainable CAP will provide $3.6 million per year with a total of $18 million over 5 years to Prairie Diagnostic Services. This is a $400,000 increase from the funding provided under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership.

“Understanding and containing disease outbreaks is key to safeguarding producers’ animals and maintaining the international reputation of our agricultural industry. With their focus on prevention, health monitoring and surveillance, Prairie Diagnostic Services has an important role to play in our industry,” says Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food

“Prairie Diagnostic Services plays a critical role in the sustainability of our agriculture industry. Their work is instrumental in protecting animals, ensuring the safety of the food supply and supporting the resiliency of Saskatchewan agriculture,” adds David Marit, Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister

“The governments’ continued support for Prairie Diagnostic Services demonstrates its commitment to livestock health. The livestock sector plays a vital role in Saskatchewan’s economy and the work we undertake at Prairie Diagnostic Services serves as a safeguard for

the health of our livestock, thereby benefiting the economy of Saskatchewan,” says Yanyun Huang, Chief Executive Officer, Prairie Diagnostic Services

Sustainable CAP is a 5-year, $3.5-billion investment by Canada’s federal, provincial and territorial governments that supports Canada’s agri-food and agri-products sectors. This includes $1 billion in federal programs and activities and a $2.5 billion commitment that is cost-shared 60% federally and 40% provincially/territorially for programs that are designed and delivered by provinces and territories.

2023 Alberta approved farmers’ markets now open

“We have more than 145 approved markets serving about 110 communities around the province that are open throughout the summer,” says Eileen Kotowich, farmers’ market specialist with the Alberta government. “This includes 20 markets that operate year-round.”

“Alberta approved farmers’ markets are a bit different from public markets, even though they may both be called a farmers’ market,” says Kotowich. “Approved farmers’ markets meet minimum standards set

out by the government, one of which is to provide preferential access to Alberta entrepreneurs through the ‘80/20 Rule’ where a minimum of 80% of the products must be produced in Alberta by the vendor. Look for the Sunnygirl logo at the market or signs that say the market is approved.”

Alberta’s farmers’ markets offer a diverse selection of goods. At this time of year there are greenhouse bedding plants and vegetables, early season vegetables, and preserves, baking, prepared foods, and other year-round products like meat, eggs and honey.

“Part of the success of farmers’ markets is that consumers want to know where their food comes from and to make that connection with the producers. It gives you a feeling of trust when you can look the producer in the eye and talk to them about how they raise their animals, grow their crops or prepare their ready-to-eat foods. The vendors love to talk about their products so don’t be afraid to ask questions.”

Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation introduced a mobile app for both Apple and Android

devices a few years ago. This app allows users to easily find any Alberta approved farmers’ markets in their area or around the province, by searching by day of the week or name or type of market. If markets add special markets or change locations or times, the information is updated immediately so that all the up-todate information about the market is at your fingertips.

Visit sunnygirl.ca to download the app or to view an interactive map of Alberta approved farmers’ markets.

Measures that impact Agricultural Innovation

Canada’s Minister of Agriculture and AgriFood, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, and Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development, the Honourable Mary Ng, released the following joint statement in response to the United States’ requested dispute settlement consultations with Mexico under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).

These consultations are in regard to

measures outlined in Mexico’s Presidential decree that was published in February 2023, namely the ban on use of biotechnology corn in tortillas and dough, the intention to gradually substitute the use of biotechnology corn in all products for human consumption and animal feed, and the rejection of applications for authorizations covering the importation and sale of certain biotechnology products.

“CUSMA is the most successful trade agreement in the world with over $2 trillion

Year of the Bison? 2023

The 11th annual Alberta Open Farm Days has officially launched, shining a spotlight on one of Alberta’s keystone species, bison, which has been a historically important part, not just of the eco-system in Alberta, but also a keystone ingredient for people that have lived on this land.

Alberta Open Farm Days is

a collaborative, province-wide, 2-day event, August 19 and 20, that gives Albertans an opportunity to experience the farm and understand where their food comes from. It is a backstage pass to meet the farmer, experience agtourism in Alberta and taste local foods direct from the producer.

On being a new travel agent

Picture this: I’m on a thrilling adventure, feeling the wind on my face as I ride along the open road, with the promise of exploration ahead. Being a motorcycle enthusiast myself, I always dreamed of turning this passion into something more and by booking custom motorcycle vacations for others, I am doing that. Little did I know that this journey would come with its own set of challenges and rewards. Let me take you through my personal experience as a new travel agent specializing in inbound motorcycle tourism.

Coordinating the Perfect Routeing for Air Fare etc., As a travel agent, booking a custom motorcycle trip is like piecing together an intricate puzzle. One of the initial challenges I faced is coordinating airfare from two different states. Navigating through complex flight schedules, searching for affordable options, and ensuring my clients arrive at their designated starting point felt like traversing a maze. However, I saw these challenges as opportunities to showcase my skills and expertise.

Mastering New Websites and Booking Engines

In today’s digital age, technology is a double-edged sword. It brings

but it can also be overwhelming. Learning new websites and booking engines was akin to taming a wild beast. However, as I delved deeper, I discovered a treasure trove of tools that simplified the booking process. These platforms allowed me to compare prices, read reviews, and customize itineraries, all with a click of a button.

Embracing the challenge, I soon became adept at navigating these online landscapes, much like a seasoned rider maneuvering through hairpin bends.

Building Relationships with Dealerships and Motorcycle Rentals Every motorcycle trip begins with finding the perfect ride. To accomplish this, I had to forge strong relationships with dealerships and motorcycle rental companies. Speaking their language, negotiating deals, and securing the best rates became second nature.

These partnerships were crucial in ensuring my clients had a safe and reliable ride that matched their unique preferences. I realized that the road to success is paved with valuable connections.

Choosing the Perfect Pit Stops: Hotels and Accommodations

A remarkable motorcycle trip isn’t just about the ride itself; it’s about the unforgettable experiences along the way.

Booking accommodations that catered to the needs of motorcycle enthusiasts posed an exciting challenge. I sought out hotels and lodges with ample parking space, secure storage facilities, and, of course, breathtaking views. After a long day on the road, my clients could rest their weary heads, knowing their beloved motorcycles were safely tucked away. Attention to detail transformed ordinary hotels into cherished parts of the adventure.

The Rewards of the Ride

Amidst the challenges, it was crucial to keep in mind the rewards. Each successful booking represented the fulfillment of someone’s dream. The joy on my clients’ faces as they embarked on their journey was truly priceless. I became a part of their adventure, the creator of memories that would last a lifetime. The satisfaction of a job well done fueled my passion for travel and provided a sense of fulfillment that few other professions could offer.

Embracing the Imperfections

While technology undoubtedly made my job easier in many ways, it was not without its quirks. Glitches, bugs, and occasional website crashes brought moments of frustration.

However, instead of letting these

challenges dampen my spirit, I am learning to embrace them with a sense of humor. Laughter became the key to navigating the roadblocks along the way. After all, it’s the imperfections that make the journey truly memorable.

As a new travel agent specializing in inbound motorcycle tourism, I quickly discovered that booking a custom motorcycle trip is a thrilling adventure of its own. Coordinating airfare, mastering new websites, building relationships with dealerships and motorcycle rentals, and choosing the perfect pit stops all contribute to the challenges and rewards that come with creating unforgettable motorcycle vacations.

Forage U-Pick information

New and interactive forage selection tool launched for Western Canada

The Saskatchewan Forage Council is excited to announce the launch of Forage U-Pick, a new interactive forage species selection tool for Western Canada. Designed to provide users with information for forage selection, seeding rates, and weed management, Forage U-Pick is a mobile-friendly tool offering timely and efficient advice.

Forages for hay and pasture are essential for beef production. Ensuring that forage species are wellsuited to growing conditions improves establishment rates, yield, vigour and quality. The Forage U-Pick tool provides information that can help to reduce costs, improve utilization and number of grazing days, and increase profitability.

Forage U-Pick is an intuitive and easy-to-use platform:

Forages Suited to My Field allows users to choose their province, soil

zone or a regional zone and provides a list of forage species that are suited to the selected zone.

The Seeding Rate Calculator is used once users have selected the forages they want to seed, ensuring that the right amount of seed is put into the ground to have the best possible chance for a good stand.

The Forage Weed Management area of the tool touches on how the economic success in forages can increase with proper weed control.

Forage U-Pick, launching June 8th, can be found on the SFC website www.saskforage.ca and at www.upick. beefresearch.ca.

Canada expands Taiwan market for Canadian beef

Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and the Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development, announced that the Government of Canada has regained market access to Taiwan for Canadian beef and beef products from animals over-thirty-months (OTM) of age.

In 2003, Taiwan imposed import restrictions on both under-thirty months and overthirty months Canadian beef, following the discovery of Canada’s first domestic case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). Canada regained Taiwan market access for under-thirty months beef in July 2016. In 2021, Canada was officially recognized by the World Organisation of Animal Health having negligible risk status for BSE.

This regained access will offer an opportunity to expand Canadian beef exports to Taiwan and diversify export markets in the IndoPacific region, while contributing to global food security, benefiting global consumers with access to high-quality beef products.

The Government of Canada will continue to work with its cattle and beef industry to maintain access to priority markets and promote Canadian products worldwide.

“Expanding our trade relationships in the Indo-Pacific region is a top priority for the Government of Canada, and Taiwan presents many opportunities for Canada’s beef sector. Canada exports nearly half of its agriculture production and, as a trusted supplier, our highquality products are sought-after around the globe,” said Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food

“This is great news for our Canadian beef farmers, as it provides an opportunity for expanded exports of Canadian beef to Taiwan, a key market in the Indo-Pacific region. Our government will keep opening new markets for Canadian businesses, strengthening our trade

ties and economy back home,” adds Mary Ng, Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development

In 2022, Canada was the 7th largest supplier of beef and beef products to Taiwan, accounting for nearly $14 million.

In 2022, Taiwan’s global imports of beef and beef products reached $1.9 billion, with the top suppliers being the US ($1 billion), Paraguay ($288 million), Australia ($280 million) and New Zealand ($172 million).

Dangers of blue-green algae when temperatures rise

“Blue-green algae is actually cyanobacteria, and can produce toxins that can be dangerous,” says Shawn Elgert, agricultural water engineer with the Alberta government. “It can cause organ damage or even death if ingested by livestock or pets.”

“If you are trying to determine a cause of poisoning, there are other potential toxins on the farm that can also cause harm to cattle such as water hemlock, or batteries. You may need to talk to a veterinarian for assistance in determining the cause.”

Elgert says the first and most important step is to identify the type of growth. “Bluegreen algae can look like blue-green scum, pea soup or grass clippings suspended in the water. You should start watching for it when the temperatures rise above 25°C.”

If blue-green algae is suspected in a dugout, it is best to be cautious, says Elgert. “You should contact a water specialist to diagnose the growth to determine if it is potentially a toxic growth. You should also remove your livestock from the water source in the interim and prevent them from accessing it. One rule of thumb is that if you can grab it as a solid mass in your hand, it is not blue-green algae.”

If blue-green algae is present, the dugout can be treated using a copper product registered for use in farm dugouts. “Once you treat it, consumption should be restricted for up to a month. The use of copper will break the cells open and release the toxins if present into the water all at once. It is important that cattle do not drink the water during this time so the toxins can degrade. You can follow up with aluminum sulfate and/or hydrated lime treatments afterwards to remove the nutrients from the water to prevent regrowth. Sometimes these coagulant treatments are better than a sole copper treatment.”

Elgert says there are also preventative measures that can be taken to try to avoid the problem. “Temperature is an important factor in the growth of blue-green algae, so a deeper dugout with steeper slopes while avoiding slope deterioration would help make the dugout water cooler.”

Nutrients are required for growth of blue-

green algae. “We have information on how to reduce nutrients from entering the dugout in our Quality Farm Dugouts manual. Buffer strips, grassed waterways, culvert controls and off-source watering systems are examples of how you can reduce nutrients.”

Dugouts should not be built in the waterway, as sediments can bring more nutrients into the dugout and depth can be lost quickly, adds Elgert.

“Aeration of the dugout can also help improve the water quality. A dye packet can also be thrown into the dugout to help prevent photosynthesis from occurring, thereby reducing the growth of blue-green algae. However, one action alone may not be enough to prevent growth.”

Elgert also notes that the wind can push the blue-green algae into highly concentrated pockets where the risk of harm is higher. “Since blue-green algae can rise or fall in the water column, inspection of the dugout should include peering into the deeper part of the water. Always be safe around the dugout by going along with another person and have a rope with a flotation device attached.”

For more information or assistance, contact an Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation water specialist at 310-FARM (3276).

Canada names location for new Indo-Pacific Agri-Food Office

The Government of Canada is taking another step forward in bringing its planned new IndoPacific Agriculture and Agri-Food Office to fruition – by announcing the Office’s location.

Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, met with the Canadian Agri-Food Trade Alliance (CAFTA), where they discussed the Indo-Pacific Strategy and she announced Manila, Philippines, as the intended home base for the new Office.

The Office is a joint venture between Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. It will consist of a mobile team that will work directly with Canadian diplomatic missions, Canadian stakeholders, foreign interlocutors and decision makers in the region to advance mutual trade objectives for the sector.

The Office will work hand in hand with Government of Canada resources already in place in the Indo-Pacific, and will help strengthen partnerships, advance technical cooperation, support Canadian exporters in finding new business opportunities, and help position Canada as a preferred supplier in the region.

The establishment of an Agriculture and AgriFood Office under the Indo-Pacific Strategy (IPS) demonstrates Canada’s commitment in the region and the importance of trade, investment, and supply chain resilience to support sustainable economic development in Indo-Pacific countries.

“The Philippines is an important partner under the Indo-Pacific Strategy. Hosting this new Office is an opportunity to build on our economic relationship, and enrich people-topeople ties. Our Government will continue to help Canadian farmers, food processors and exporters maximize their opportunities, and diversify their markets in the world’s fastestgrowing economic zone,” says the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food

“Expanding trade, investment and supply chain resilience is one of the Indo-Pacific Strategy’s objectives for Canada. The IndoPacific Region presents tremendous economic opportunities for Canada’s agriculture and agri-food sector, and the Office is another step forward to reaching our goals.”

- The Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development

“Canada’s agriculture and agri-food exporters have long called for an Indo-Pacific Strategy that would help us seize the many opportunities that exist in these dynamic and fast-growing markets. We are pleased that Canada’s Indo-Pacific Agriculture and AgriFood office will be established in Manila, a growing trading partner for Canada and a key member of ASEAN. We are keen to continue to work with the federal government to ensure this office helps agri-food exporters grow

Canada’s market share in the Indo-Pacific which will strengthen critical people to people ties, create new jobs, support food security, and enable more opportunities in trade for Canadian agri-food businesses,” says Dan Darling, President of the Canadian Agri-Food Trade Alliance (CAFTA)

In 2022, Canada’s agriculture and agri-food exports to the Indo-Pacific region totalled $21.8 billion. During the 2018-2022 period, our agriculture and agri-food exports to the region expanded by nearly 7%, while our imports from the region have grown by nearly 9%.

Global agrifood and seafood imports into ASEAN markets have increased by 177% from 2012 to 2022 (from CA$72 billion to CA$200 billion).

Canada has trade agreements in force with several key markets in the Indo-Pacific region, including South Korea under the CanadaKorea Free Trade Agreement (CKFTA), and with Australia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore and Vietnam under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
