UNAPOLOGETICALLY

VISIBLE

WHENWEMOVEDPRIDEINTO THEHEARTOFNEWCASTLE,IT WASN’TJUSTABOUT GEOGRAPHY.ITWASABOUT POWER.VISIBILITY.LIBERATION.

Toooften, queer livesare pushed to the fringes, celebrated conditionally, tolerated inpockets, erased when inconvenient.

But last summer, standing on Grey’s Monument, looking out overa sea of colour, of tears,of laughterand love, I felt thefull weight of what it meant forus totake up space.Onourterms.In our city.

There was something electric inthe air. Something emotional. Therewewere: queerpeople, transpeople, elders, families, kids,allies.Loud. Proud. Unmissable. And somewherein that crowd,I know there was a young person, maybe scared, maybeunsure, maybe not yet out, watching it all unfold. Realising forthefirst time: You’renot alone. There’sa placeforyouhere.

That’s what Pride is. A signal. A sanctuary.A battlecry. And that’s why thisyear, ourPrideMarchisdedicatedtoourTrans+community.

Becauselet’sbehonest, trans,non-binary,and gender-diverse people are under attack. Legislatively.Culturally.Violently. But here inNewcastle, wemarch in solidarityand indefiance. We sayclearly, proudly, without compromise:

Transwomenarewomen.Transmenaremen. Non-binarypeoplearevalid.Noonegetsleftbehind.

Visibilitymatters, but it has tobe backed byaction. That’s whywe’re not just putting on a party. We’re building something deeper.

This year, we’ve created newspacesofsafety, creativity, and celebration, including the first-ever Trans+ZoneatAlphabettiTheatre, artist commissions that explore what it means tobe Unapologetically Visible, and the launchof our Pride Fringe, bringing queerculture to everycornerof the cityin the weeksleading up to the festival.

It’s easy to think Pride is a weekend. But for us, it’s a movement. Anongoing act of resistance, joyand community care. We dothis for the people whocame before us.For those nolonger withus. For those still waiting to feel seen. Pride is protest. Pride ispower. Pride ispossibility.

And none of it happens alone. So,I want tosay, from the bottom ofmyheart, thank you.

Toourcommunitypartners, funders, artists, volunteers, and every single person who’s supported Northern Pride, you’ve helped turn vision intoreality. You’ve helped build a space where people don’t just survive, theythrive. A place where queer joytakescentre stage and our storiesaren’t just told, they’re celebrated.

We dothis together. And we keep going, together. Because the work isn’t finished until everysingle one of usis safe, supported, and free.

So tothe next generation:march louder, dream bigger, take up space.

Youdon’t need permission.Youalreadybelong. Withlove, gratitude, and Pride,

OURPRIDEMARCH

Thisyear'smarchisdedicated toourTrans+community!

In linewith thetheme unapologetically visible, this year’s March willagainsee thousandsof communitymembers, allies, local peopleand businesses come togetherto fillthe streetsof Newcastlewith a colourfulmessageofhope.

And this yearwe are dedicating our marchto thetrans, non-binary and genderdiversecommunity as weuseour collectivevoices to raise awareness ofthe ongoing challengesand discrimination faced byourtranssiblings, lets useour marchtoloudlyand proudlysay,

TransWomenareWomen, TransMenareMenand Non-Binarypeoplearevalid.

Duetothe ongoing development of Northumberland Street,it is with great regret that the route fortheannual NewcastlePride march onSaturday19Julywill now changetopass through JohnDobson Street. This isto ensure maximum safety of all attendees as it isnot possibletomarch theplanned route withthe continued worksand associated risks.

The marchwillcommence from theCivicCentreat12pm as planned, but will this yearhead downJohnDobson Street, before returning to theusualroute onBlackett Street then finally ontoPercy Street.Themarch will finish at Civic Centre ahead of thecitywidecelebrations.

Whilst weare incrediblydisappointed that wecannot marchdown Northumberland Street, something that is fundamental to Prideand issymbolic to theLGBTQIA+ communityand ourvisibility inthecity, the priorityhas tobethe safetyand welfare of everyone taking part. Weweremadeawareof concerns by NewcastleCity Counciland Northumbria Police surrounding theongoing building workson Northumberland Street and therisks related tothe march. With this, strict guidance was provided tomodifyourplans.

Weare working closely withallpartners to ensure that we do everything we can to makethis change work. It’s paramount that theLGBTQIA+ communityis ableto march safelywhileremaining unapologetically visible.
