Northern Living is always keen to support a new business so this month we feature the unique horticulture studio named Planted by Nicole that has opened in Mawson Lakes. The shop is full of indoor plants, many of them rare and exotic. There are also edible plants, cacti, succulents and beautiful designer varieties. Nicole will come to your home/shop/office, check out the environmental conditions and advise you on plants that suit your space and how to care for them. And if you are nervous about plant survival, Nicole will visit regularly to pamper your living greens. See inside page 7. “The future will increasingly see robots working alongside humans in space, defence, mining, business and many other areas” says Dr James Walsh who is a research scientist at the University at South Australia. James introduced me to Clive, an intelligent 4-legged robot designed to work side by side with humans. Meet Clive on page 12. Council elections are coming up in November so in the coming issues I will introduce you to some of the people who are nominating for the 14 positions on Salisbury Council. Think carefully about who you would like to represent you in local matters because your vote is your voice.

Beautiful way of living

Dimitri Kalagos

My husband and I had been saving for a trip around the world for many years, trying to prepare for everything that could go wrong, but we never imagined that fraud would bring it all crumbling down. We arrived at the airport to collect our tickets only to discover that the tickets had been ordered but never paid for. A distressed call to our travel agent told us that one of their staff had absconded with a large amount of money. Without tickets we were stranded. Finally, after many months we got our money back from insurance but our holiday was ruined. Ragina Jones

Thanks Nigella for your story on the farmers’ market at Parafield (NL/ August). Today I went there for the first time and bought fresh oranges and mandarins direct from the Riverland and the farmer even threw in a few extra oranges. Kristianne

Thriving on thrifty

How to live for less than $100 a day? Cook. Eat at home, Make soup. Make coffee. Make bread. Make lunch before you go out. All save a lot of money. Shop the sales and stock up on sale items. Freeze leftovers. Go to the local farmers’ market for eggs, fresh fruit and veg. Make your own fruit ice blocks for treats for the kids. Don’t buy processed foods. Roast your own chicken, make your own stock. For entertainment, hire DVDs, books and games from the library for free. Visit the OP shop for a wide range of products. Use public transport. A look at history tells us that vaccinations have worked to kill off or reduce diseases. Nasty diseases like smallpox, polio, mumps, measles, hepatitis B and tetanus were prevalent a few decades ago. Not anymore. Others that have been contained are whooping cough, rubella, malaria and diphtheria. Hopefully, in time, covid will be added to the list.

My grandfather tells tales of “back in my day” when families had to survive on tight budgets, much higher interest rates, limited money for food and simpler entertainment. He has lots of good tips on how to make the dollar go further, and now that being thrifty has become the hottest trend in 2022, we are listening. Arthur Clark

I can’t find a parking spot at the shopping centre, shops are full of customers, there’s not a seat in my local cafe, the food court is doing great business and so is Bunnings. It’s hard to get an appointment at the hairdresser, the dog groomer or the vet. Traffic on Main North Road is increasing despite high petrol prices. Marie Gupta Crime increase

Since the opening of the Gawler railway line there has been an increase in crime in the district. If you see or hear anything suspicious call the Police on 131 444 or contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

Last year I sold my home in Glen Osmond and purchased a quaint town house in Mawson Lakes. I think that Salisbury Council do a magnificent job maintaining Mawson Lakes, from their never ending parklands, walking paths, fun outdoor gym equipment, to their waterways and the sparkling lakes which are full bird life. The town centre is bustling with restaurants, cafés with all the amenities one needs. But what has really made me feel so safe and comfortable is the huge community feeling. From day one people took the time to stop and say hello, from school children to locals enjoying their stroll. The community is so inclusive of it’s multicultural societies. So thank you Mawson Lakes and all who contribute to a simply beautiful way of living!

John Shane Teachers are not babysitters I noticed in the July issue there were three letters calling for a change to teachers’ working conditions. Teachers today are expected to be pseudo parents, nutritionists, mathematicians, linguists, artists, athletes, counsellors, psychiatrists, behaviour managers, police, first aiders and more. They have to do before-school, recess, lunch and after-school duties; often without a full meal break. I have known teachers who spend the first week of their holidays catching up on sleep; while some attend educational conferences in what should be their free time. But, what I found really sad was the presumption that if school went to 5pm, then teachers, although highly qualified and trained, would be seen as free babysitters, saving parents the cost for child care.

“Our plants are popular on balconies and indoors, although we do sell outdoor and edible plants as well,” she said. “Many people are worried that their indoor plants won’t thrive so I am here to help. I can go to a location and advise on the right plants for the conditions and how to care for them. If needed I will visit an office, shop or home on a regular basis and care for plants to keep them looking splendid.” ED

“We still have a way to go with Clive’s capability and interactivity, but at IVE* we are excited by artificial intelligence which can take researchers to unexplored places,” he said.

12 www.northernliving.infonorthern Issue 171, September 2022

Clive’s owner, Dr James Walsh, said that a team at UniSA* is working to make Clive more interactive with humans and able to communicate with those around him so he becomes less of a metal tool on legs and more of a two-way communication system.

ED *Clive lives at the UniSA Research Centre for Interactive and Virtual Environments (IVE), based at the Mawson Lakes campus. Watch Clive on YouTube “Move over GI Jane, meet AI Clive”

MEET CLIVE THE ROBOT

Meet Clive. He’s a 4-legged robot designed to do important and dangerous work where humans may not be safe to go. This includes a collapsed building, or a fire or a war zone. Clive is versatile. He can get down low or reach up high so he can be used for remote inspections by defence, space, mining and utility companies, and for search and rescue. He also makes a good security Cliveguard.is made up of 13 motors with batteries and speakers, microphones and cameras all over his body adding up to about 13kg in weight and giving him nearly all-round vision.

Dr Walsh’s enthusiasm for STEM also takes him and Clive into schools to encourage interest in STEM learning. “It's inevitable that robots will take over many roles as they pair with humans. This is the way of the future, and to thrive, the next generation needs to be good at maths and science, and display persistence and creativity.”

"I don’t feel the local member should have any more say over an alternative name than the next person, but point out Parafield Gardens is the biggest suburb in the electorate, so this could be a more appropriate name."

Need a plate for a meeting or having friends over, then try this easy fruit slice. It’s a popular slice at the Mawson Lakes Garden Club which meets at the community INGREDIENTScentre.

John said the biggest community issues in his electorate are traffic, particularly Elder Smith / Kings Road congestion as the population in the North grows. Day-to-day issues such as housing prices, public housing, school facilities and access to sporting fields are common concerns.

"My electorate spans the suburbs of Paralowie, Mawson Lakes, Salisbury Downs, Parafield Gardens and Green Fields. It does not include any part of the City of Playford,” said John. The state electorate of Playford was formed in 1970 and boundaries have been redefined."

State Labor member for Playford, John Fulbrook, has requested the Electoral Commission of South Australia rename his constituency for the next election due to confusion about the name Playford being applied to the seat and the local government area around Elizabeth that he does not represent. Speaking in Parliament, he suggested the name be used to rename an electorate located within the City of Playford.

for our extended tours. eur ekatours

After 2 full days, we had free time to explore Broken Hill at our leisure before boarding the bus to Peterborough, where we stayed for our final night. We attended the amazing sound & light show at Peterborough, one of the highlights of the trip. There were about 25 of us on the tour, a mixture of couples and singles. It was a well organised adventure, our guide and driver were fantastic, motels were clean and comfortable and food was excellent. I will certainly be travelling with Eureka again.

Come and have fun with us! For more information or a brochure on all our tours please call 8262 4001, email info@eurekatours.com.au , visit our web page: eurekatours.com.au or visit us on facebook. Day Tours

PICK UP AND RETURN to selected

A door to door pick-up when going on a 5-day bus tour is a great way to start a getaway with Eureka Tours. We were headed to Australia's oldest mining town, with a colonial history dating back to the 1880s. This was Broken Hill in NSW, not far from the border with SA. There was quite a distance to cover on the first day but sufficient stops made for a comfortable journey. Lunch was at Yunta, and by evening we arrived at our comfortable motel in Broken Hill. landscape and over the next few days we enjoyed an itinerary including an insight into the workings of the Royal Flying Doctor Service, visits to Silverton, Menindee Lakes, the iconic Palace Hotel and a local guided tour of Broken Hill.

COMPLIMENTARY suburbs

On our second evening we drank champagne as the sun went down over the sandstone sculptures at the Living Desert State Park (pictured).

This happened to Gatz, a border collie who became a subject of 'Joint Custody'. The Man had custody Monday through Friday and The Woman had him on weekends. Gatz is not happy and he writes a story about it, detailing his antics to get the humans back together again. Poor Gatz will do anything to reunite his loved ones, even dangerous attentiongrabbing tricks, but things become desperate when a new man enters The Woman’s life. New Man is handsome, intelligent and nice, so Gatz realises he will need to step up his game. Mummy and I borrowed Gatz's novel from the library and laughed our way through the pages, from Gatz’s rescue from the animal shelter, to his human’s first accidental meeting. Some of his drastic doggy measures worked well to get the humans together after the split, and some didn’t.
