Dogs on Planes My poodle and family are excited to see that the Civil Aviation Authority has announced that pets will be allowed to travel in aircraft cabins with their owners from December.

The airlines open to this idea are Virgin Australia, Rex and Alliance Aviation. They will get my business. In an era when the aviation industry is suffering, they need to come up with new ways to satisfy customer demand. This is a good one. SHOP TRADING HOURS - YOUR THOUGHTS Most shops in Adelaide by law can only open until 9pm on weekdays, until 5pm on Saturdays and from 11am to 5pm on Sundays. They must close on public holidays. The SA Government wants to introduce legislation that will give shops the option to open any day of the year at any time except Christmas Day, Good Friday and Anzac Morning. The government wants a referendum believing that now is the time to let the people decide, once and for all, whether they want the freedom to shop, trade and work when and where they choose without our confusing, outdated laws stopping them.

HEALTH CARE COMES CLOSER No longer do Northerners have to travel to town for specialist medical care. Professional expertise has now come north in the form of the Northern Specialist Suites, opened in Mawson Lakes in March.

All of this means you can have many investigations without going to hospital. Investigations on site include lung function test, ECHO (ultrasound of heart), heart rhythm monitoring, stress test, sleep disorders and blood tests (SA Pathology) to name a few.

To access these services you need a referral from a GP. A visit to the Northern Specialist Suites will involve investigations, testing and advice on long-term management of the condition. Should surgery be required the specialist doctor will book you into hospital and arrange for the procedure. ED

When searching for an accountant, the ideal candidate might be right under your nose. Start by asking any friends or family members who own small businesses if they would recommend their accountant. The best accountant for a sole trader might not be the best fit for a company with employees. Some accountants will do little more than manage your accounts and complete your tax return forms, but the best accountants are fully up-to-date with changing laws on superannuation and tax reform and they are more proactive. Easy moist Banana Cake If you have overripe bananas in your fruit bowl don’t throw them away, turn them into a banana cake with this simple recipe. The cake is moist and particularly delicious served warm, either iced or plain.

INGREDIENTS

125g unsalted butter 1 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla essence 1 egg 1 ½ cups self-raising flour ¼ cup milk 2 very ripe bananas, well mashed

METHOD

1. Melt butter until just soft, add sugar and vanilla and beat together until smooth.

2. Add mashed bananas and egg and mix in well. Stir in flour, add milk and mix lightly by hand.

4. Bake in moderate oven for approx 30 minutes. Cake is cooked if a knife comes out clean when inserted into cake.

5. Cover with icing if desired.

PETS CORNER DOGS LOVE TREES

Dogs love trees. I could sniff and decipher the p-mails forever, but mummy pulls me away reminding me there are many more intoxicating smells to be discovered.

Along the way there were bridges to cross and large tree-filled ovals to play in and picnic spots with barbecues (great smells here).

It's why I was so excited to hear that Salisbury Council is planting 10,000 trees along the Little Para River Trail.

This used to be an orange grove and vineyards, but I couldn’t get any whiff of oranges.

This called for a tree adventure, so we packed our supplies - water bottle, dog biscuits, a long lead and a poo bag and set off to find the new plantings.

In the 1960s the City of Salisbury began acquiring land along the river for open space for public use and now we have a belt of beautiful parklands with trails edged with magnificent river gum trees and shady walking tracks.

We ended our walk in Harry Bowey Reserve and looped back to the car along a bush track arched by rich red cliffs.

The Little Para Trail runs for 16km from the hills to the sea. We selected just a small part to explore, from Jenkins Reserve to Harry Bowey Reserve.

First stop was Jenkins Reserve where we saw a sea of new plantings. (pictured below).

We passed a big enclosed dog park where I talked to lots of different dogs.

The name of the river is derived from the Kaurna word, Pari, which means a stream of flowing water.

I reckon all my doggie friends would love this walk. There’s a lot more river trail for us to explore, so see you on the track.

At Jenkins Reserve we saw hundreds of little green capsules to protect new plantings.

TREES ARE COOL The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago.

The second best time is now. Chinese proverb Healthy trees cool our environment, provide habitat for birds, reduce storm water run off and improve the quality of the air we breathe. Watering a tree inside your property or outside your home twice or three times a week will help preserve one of our most important natural resources.

How much water does a tree need?

• Young trees need help to grow up strong and thrive in the long term. Pour two to three buckets of water around the base each week in summer. Reduce water in winter.

• Maintain a shallow hollow in the soil around the drip line to contain the water, or use a green well.

• Any water will do - recycled water from the shower, the laundry, the carwash or the washing up.

• Pour water on slowly so the ground has time to absorb it.

An ornamental pear tree is deciduous. In autumn its leaves change colour and fall off, so in winter it lets the sun shine in.

Then in summer it forms a beautiful cool green canopy.

• Hand pull weeds around trees.

• Add mulch to the base of the plant (not grass clippings).

• Don’t park on the verge under trees as this can compact the soil and harm them.

• The best time to plant a tree is now when the weather is cool, the soil is soft and rain is likely.

Trees generously share their fruit.

Bees generously share their honey.

Flowers generously share their perfume.

Humans generously share care for a tree.

What sort of tree to plant?

Take a look around your suburb to see the trees that are growing well. Take a photo of the trees you like and pick off a small piece to take to a nursery. But before you head to the nursery, take a good look at your space (and snap a few photos for reference). Ask yourself Where do I want to create shade?

• How much sunlight does my yard receive - morning sun? all-day sun? afternoon sun? Look at directional sunlight - east-facing? west-facing?

• Where do I want to create privacy screens?

• Do I want an evergreen or a deciduous tree that loses its leaves in winter?

• How big is my yard? ( measure in metres.)

• Is there pooling water in certain areas to avoid?

• Is there a concrete patio or walkway that won’t suit invasive roots?

• What is my soil like? Is it mostly clay? sandy? Take a sample to the nursery. ED

The Garden of Shifting Skies represents the flat topography of Salisbury. This space is composed of a plane of indigenous and mown grasses.

Reclining lounge seats and low concrete walls invite visitors to pause and contemplate the heavens as well as viewing the channel of water as it falls into a circular sunken space. Stepping stones, a treatment often used in Japan allows the body of water to be crossed.

The Garden of Fields emphasises the city of Mobara’s agricultural heritage. A diagonal field of colourful iris and cosmos, mown grass and gravel refers to the landscape. A timber deck traverses the field and marking the entrance to the third garden is a cluster of bright red poles, a colour often associated with Japan.
