Welcome TO THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF MAD HATTERZ PARTIES!

Toni Anne fell into face and body art unintentionally, by offering to ‘help out’ the face painter at her son’s day care centre over 26 years ago.

With the help of an incredibly supportive partner, this soon became both a creative outlet and a successful business.

But parties were growing, and families were asking “what more can we do?” which led to the addition of balloon artistry, organised craft activities, event planning and everything in between.

The rapid growth saw Toni Anne assemble a wonderful team of artists and performers and Mad Hatterz Parties became a one-stop destination for all your party needs.

Delving into body art ten years later ignited even more passion. Allowing Toni to merge her creative skills in painting with dramatic painted bodies, letting the design speak for itself. Further pushing her capabilities, she has created jewels, feathers, clothing adornments and elaborate headpieces to complement the painted forms. Check out her amazing work on the cover.

Mad Hatterz Parties has grown from a one person band to a fantastic network of amazing artists and performers with diverse skills and personalities “Without my talented team we would not be where we are today, proud of our success and continuing to grow and support the communities we love.”

ABOUT TONI ANNE

Based in the north, she has lived most of her life in the area and loves it here. “The opportunities in the north are amazing. I get to travel all over SA and interstate and still want to come back. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.”

Giving back to the community is important to Toni Anne. As an Honorary Rotarian with the Rotary Club of Salisbury she is proud to have had the pleasure of chairing the Australia Day Committee, being involved in many activities with the Club, raising funds for local initiatives and working at the Rotary Club of Salisbury’s second hand shop, AllSorts at Parafield Airport. She is a Board Member for the Salisbury Business Association and supplies artists and entertainment for various community events, as well as helping to plan some amazing events such as the Salisbury Christmas Pageant.

Toni Anne also sits on the Committee of the Northern Business Breakfast - a rotating monthly breakfast between the City of Salisbury and City of Playford – bringing together small business owners and speakers of interest. The Northern Business Breakfast is about getting business owners out of their workplaces and networking in the local community, building business relations and increasing market awareness.

Call Toni Anne today to talk about how she can help make your next event awesome!

COVER STORY

The obvious

Select a date and location – but remember that the weather is not always our friend. Hint – have a back up plan!

Themes

There are many to choose from and often the simplest can be the most fun and least stressful.

Entertainment/Games

This is our speciality! Face Painters, Balloon Artists, craft activities, Jumping Castles, Soft Play and more – consider your location and what it has to offer.

• Treasure Hunts, Pinata’s - some of the best parties we plan are the old fashioned ones with the games we played as children such as pass the parcel (which can take many fun forms!)

• Craft activities are a great way, especially in the colder months, to create a fun and exciting atmosphere for the children

• Entertainers are great for breaking up the party and have kids interact as well as adults –remember we don’t only do KID’S Parties – we love to entertain the Big Kids too!

Food

Pizza ovens and coffee vans are great options for very little work – you call, book, they arrive and cook for you! – some have service and clean up options available. Or, keep it low key and serve fan favourites such as fairy bread, store-bought sausage rolls, party pies and jelly cups. Children are often more interested in playing than eating!

Photos

In this digital age – TAKE THE PHOTOS! They are memories that last a lifetime. We can organise a photographer to come to your event, or you could ask a friend and delegate the job.

Remember - there are so many things we can tell you but the most important is to enjoy the day –this is a one off opportunity to share love, family and friendship.

At Mad Hatterz Parties we love to party – there is no denying that. Seeing the smiling faces of the guests when they have their faces painted, or receive a balloon creation, or a small win with the party games – this is what makes our world revolve. We Are Awesome! We love to create magical memories for all ages and will continue to do so for as long as we can.

City of Salisbury residents can book a FREE hard waste service to recycle household items that cannot be placed in their yellow-lid kerbside bin.

Two free hard waste services are available each financial year and residents can choose to have the items collected from the verge or drop the items off to one of two local Resource Recovery Centres.

Acceptable hard waste items include furniture, mattresses, bikes, electronic items and scrap metal. Resources are recovered from collected materials, where possible.

For example, mattresses are sent for dismantling and their steel is sent to Australian scrap metal recyclers to be reused in roof sheeting. Mattress foam is made into carpet underlay and timber is recycled to make weed matting or mulch for gardens, the waste textile component is recycled to make acoustic panelling, ensuring valuable resources are not lost to landfill.

To book your next hard waste service, visit the NAWMA website or contact the Customer Service team on 8259 2100.

MAY 2023 IS HISTORY MONTH

Livingmagazines

May is History Month. And this little community magazine is celebrating it’s 15th anniversary issue. Some readers’ memories go back that far.

The magazine started out in May 2008 as Mawson Lakes Directory - strictly a business directory full of business advertising, in what was then a raw but developing suburb.

Then in 2011 I bought the publication and changed it into a lifestyle magazine.

MAY 2008

The first few hundred issues of the Mawson Lakes Directory are distributed to letterboxes in the fledgling suburb of Mawson Lakes

A name change to Mawson Lakes Living reflected a new direction where advertising was still an integral part of the magazine, but the true beauty was in the journalistic style, the useful information and the platform it provided for the artistic talents of of the population - our photographers and artists who have been featured on the covers and in the pages ever since. These elements give the magazine character and depth that local people tell me they love. Linda Vining, May 2018, 10th anniversary issue

THE MAWSON LAKES GARDEN CLUB

CELEBRATES 10 YEARS

Inspiration for the creation of a garden club came to Sue Reid one night. After mentioning this to Linda Vining, Linda soon set a plan in motion and a group of local people gathered at her house to plan the Mawson Lakes Garden Club.

Under Linda’s stewardship, a logo was developed, a constitution was written, the club became incorporated, sponsors found and the very first public meeting was planned and held in The Mawson Centre on 28th May 2013 with Kelvin Trimper (past President of the National Rose Society of Australia) as guest speaker.

Today the club maintains a happy, friendly social environment and epitomises Garden Clubs of Australia’s motto “Friendship through gardens”. Every month on the 4th Tuesday at 7.30pm in The Mawson Centre interesting speakers entertain and educate on various topics.

Bus trips and self-drive outings range from beer gardens and wineries to private gardens, unusual garden centres and everything in between!

To celebrate 10 years, we are throwing a garden party. It will be a great afternoon, kicking off at 1.30pm in the Lecture Theatre in the Mawson Centre on 28th May.

All welcome, but please let us know you are coming for catering purposes. RSVP mawsonlakesgardenclub@gmail.com

YOUR AREA PAQUITA PARK

Behind the boat shed on the Sir Douglas Mawson Lake in Mawson Lakes is a park called Paquita Park, named in honour of the wife of Douglas Mawson. So what's the story behind Paquita?

Francisca Adriana (Paquita) Mawson OB (nee Delprat, 18911974) came to Australia with her family in 1899, a year after her father Guillaume Delprat, became General Manager of the Broken Hill Company.

Paquita attended school in Broken Hill and Adelaide before studying piano and singing at the Elder Conservatorium of Music.

She was 17 when she met geologist and explorer Douglas Mawson who was an associate of her father. They were engaged within a year and married in 1914, a month after Mawson’s return from the Australasian Antarctic Expedition.

During the first World War, Paquita relocated to England where she assisted Mawson in his work for the Ministry of

Munitions and where the second of their two daughters was born.

Settling in Adelaide after the war, Paquita worked for organisations such as the Mothers and Babies Health Association and the Australian Red Cross Society and was equally prominent in the city’s social and cultural life.

She was appointed an Officer of the Order of OrangeNassau in 1946 for her work with Dutch refugees during World War 2: and was awarded an OBE in 1951.

She also wrote and published two books - biographies of her father, A Vision of Steel (1958) and her husband, Mawson of the Antarctic (1964). Linda Vining FACE
