Here we are in election mode again. In Australian election campaigns we are channelled to vote on personalities - in this case Morrison vs Albanese. I would like to know other members of the party we are voting for. Let’s hear from each senior member of the leadership team and what they claimed they would do at the last election, what has actually been achieved, what else they have done and what they would attempt to do if re-elected. This should then be critiqued by the opposition representative holding the same portfolio. And, then let’s hear what they would do if elected. This month we celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May. In this issue we’re looking at older mums - grandmothers. At 72 Maye Musk, mother of entrepreneur Elon Musk, is a flamboyant international model. She has written a book about her life including how she raised a genius. I really enjoyed her story. You can read my review on page 13. And if you are a grandmother what are the 10 Commandments for Grandparents? How many sins do you commit? It’s been fun hanging out with the friendly model yacht sailors while I put together this month’s cover story. Their boats are a spectacle to enjoy on the lake. Read more on page 7.

Ed: USC has been advertising in NL for many months to attract students. The College recently celebrated 20 years. See their story and what they offer on page 17 in NL/April. Flood-prone properties Following the article on Stormwater Management in NL/April I looked up City of Salisbury website for a flood map of the Salisbury area. Could not find one, but I did read the results of the Climate Variation study which identified the top 20 government areas for riverine flooding in Australia ranked by the percentage of flood prone properties. It shows that suburbs with more than1000 properties at risk were Mawson Lakes, West Lakes, Grange, Renmark, Semaphore and Port Adelaide. The study found that as a result of climate change variable, these properties were uninsurable
or unaffordable to insure. This is something to look at if you are buying a property. Julie Ortados Transforming universities Maybe this labor government will be able to amalgamate SA universities. Others have tried and failed. A city this size with 3 universities (Adelaide, Flinders and UniSA) is over institutionalised. Savings will be immense. Sasha Quah Violent reaction Modern movies are full of violence, the nastier the better, so why are we stunned when we see violence in real time (Will Smith’s slap at the Academy Awards). Movies portray a make-believe world that influences real-time behaviour. Melanie Vasquez CODA Saturday night is movie night at our place, but it’s hard to find a decent movie. My wife won’t watch violent or scary movies and I won’t watch romantic nonsense, so it was good to see that CODA, a wholesome movie, made it to the top of the Oscar Awards. Please give us more positive thoughtful movies like this.

Twilight SAILING As the sun set on an evening in autumn, 12 model boats from the Mawson Lakes Model Yacht Club began to glow on Sir Douglas Mawson Lake as their little coloured lights twinkled in the breeze. The pretty hand-built, radio-controlled sailing boats started their route at the boat shed on the lake, navigated right around the lake, under the bridge, along the Boulevard and back to the boat shed. President of MLMYC Dean Bonnet said the club likes to enter friendly competitions with other clubs but Twilight Sailing is just for fun and for the joy of dressing up the boats and putting them in the water at night.

CANCER FOG Cancer Fog is a condition that can affect people with cancer resulting in memory loss, lack of concentration and difficulty finding words for conversation. The fog can start as early as tumour growth and become worse while undergoing treatment. Researcher from UniSA, Elizabeth Wells, is examining how a one-on-one, readaloud program can influence a cancer patient's sense of wellbeing.

“We have art therapy and music therapy so why not bibliotherapy (book therapy). Bibliotherapy is used overseas but there is no research on this in a cancer context so I’m examining how effective it would be,” said Elizabeth.
"I choose my books and stories using the SA Library Network so I have access to a huge range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, depending on the participant's preference."
“I'm seeking cancer patients to participate in my study. To be eligible a person must be over 18, English speaking, and be about to undergo, currently undergoing treatment, or have been treated in the last 12 months.” Elizabeth is a former teacher and librarian so she carefully selects short stories to suit each person’s likes. She will arrange for a reader to go to the cancer patient's home, the library, the cancer centre, the park or anywhere else that suits them. Each weekly session lasts 30-40 minutes.
“Being read to is a really nice way to connect with another person. Stories can be such fun and a valuable form of escapism, and it gives you something new to talk about with family and friends, aside from the cancer, treatments and side-effects. It is intended to bring some respite," said Elizabeth. At the start and end of the 6 week project participants will be asked to answer a simple survey. AROUND THE LAKE Meet Benny, my new friend, a handsome all-black labradoodle who’s always getting up to mischief, like the time he jumped into the lake. He tells me ...
“When I first moved in with my mum, I was going for a walk around the lake. I loved all the ducks and even a pelican or two. When my mum wasn’t concentrating on me I thought I would run down the slope that looked like so much fun. When mum turned around all that was sticking out of that lake was my head. Needless to say I went home for a much needed bath, and would like to say I learned my lesson, but I didn't.” We doggies understand you Benny. The lakes have many dog-fascinating features. One day when mummy and I were treading the lakeside pavers I caught a whiff of something strong. So while mummy wasn’t looking, I ventured into the reeds and discovered a rotting carp. It was delicious to roll in, over and over; but oh the stink. Mummy galloped me home for a bath, but even after a good wash down, people unkindly commented on my awful smell and nobody wanted me to sit on their lap. I was ostracised for days and then had to suffer another shampoo before I became 'socially acceptable’. I reckon the best place around the lake is the boatshed when the Mawson Lakes Model Yacht Club holds a BBQ for its members. They make the most delicious rissoles and I'm sure to get one. I call them ‘yachty rissoles’. 16 northern
