Defence hub grows in the North The question everyone is asking me is: “What is that enormous new white building that faces onto Main North Road at the entrance to Technology Park?” The answer is Raytheon Technologies. It’s part of the growing defence hub in the North. The facility was officially opened by the Prime Minister last month. To find out more go to page 6 . Moving away from defence, in this issue we talk about Mother’s Day and the pride and joy that mothers have in their children. There’s a set of mother’s day tags for children to colour in to give to their mum/nana on the second Sunday in May, as well as ideas for locally sourced gifts. History Week is in May. Salisbury was first settled in 1839 and the City of Salisbury came about in 1964. This issue has some historical photos, so see if you recognise any familiar features from the past.

COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS Speak up I read my first Northern Living magazine recently and I commend all involved in producing a publication that highlights news and views from our local area. I think all three levels of government should be more responsive to the social and environmental needs of our area. People living in our area need to speak up, as well as the business community who have a pivotal role to play. Forums like Northern Living should be utilised by all to promote the social progress that many are earnestly seeking in our local community. A gift to the people The opening of the Bridgestone Athletics Centre was described by Mayor Gillian Aldridge as a gift to the people Getting back to work It’s going to be a deep shock to go from working at home to, suddenly, five days a week at work. Employers will no longer be required to permit workers to work from home, in fact they now have a legal right to order employees back to work in their original location. Governments now want people back at work to infuse the business districts with income, so if you are going to transition back to work, by choice or force, be sure to seek continued or additional flexibility to help you reduce commute time, manage health risks, care for your family and participate in local community commitments. Death of cinemas We used to go to the cinema for a night out until the experience became unpleasant. Nothing to do with the film and everything to do with the poor manners of patrons who talk and giggle before and during the movie, jeer at scenes, put feet on the seats, and eat the whole way through. The awful smell of popcorn throughout the cinema turned us off. And ultimately if we wait a few months we can purchase, borrow or hire the movie online. I’m an earlybird so I do the morning shift, make breakfast and lunches, get kids ready to go without the rush, drop them off, then come home to work. My wife does the afternoon shift. She
collects kids and prepares an early dinner, after which we all go off to the park to play for an hour or so, ride our bikes, walk the dog etc. When the kids are tired-out and in bed, we settle down to work some more, or just sit around and talk and enjoy adult time. Raytheon Centre includes manufacturing A new $50 million facility at Mawson Lakes, billed as one of the world’s most advanced integrated air and missile defence centres, was opened by Prime Minister Scott Morrison and South Australia Premier Steven Marshall last month. The Raytheon Australia Centre for Joint Integration at Salisbury’s Technology Park will provide surface to air missile capability to the Australian Defence Forces giving them protection from manned aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles and cruise missiles. Raytheon Technologies Corporation is an American multinational aerospace and defence giant; one of the largest aerospace, intelligence services providers, and defence manufacturers in the world. Raytheon Australia has built its new headquarters at Mawson Lakes; the first of its kind in Australia.

The facility has two main components: the core which includes training, laboratory space and office accommodation, and another 6,500 square metres devoted to light manufacturing, depot repair and warehousing. 370 car parking spaces have been provided. More than 200 employees are already based in the new premises and eventually the precinct will be home to 300 jobs. The federal government expects to spend $100 billion on missiles and other guided weapons over the next two decades. The Prime Minister unveiled a five-year $111 million contract with Raytheon for a new national advanced surface to air missile system (NASAMS). “As the pandemic has shown, having the ability for self-reliance, be it vaccine development or the defence of Australia, is vital to meeting our own requirements in a changing global environment. It’s an imperative we now proceed with the creation of a sovereign guided weapons capability as a priority,” said the Prime Minister. ED

If stored in its box, away from heat and light and not on a shelf in the humid bathroom, perfume will last six to 18 months. Once a bottle is opened it should be used up because scent evaporates and perfumes change smell.
EYELINERS AND LIP LINERS Can last up to two years and will last longer if sharpened regularly.
NAIL POLISH
It’s time to throw it out if the product separates and won’t stay mixed. A good polish should be useable for 2 years.

HISTORY MONTH May is History Month. The Salisbury area has a rich and diverse history. Do you recognise some of these local landmarks? For thousands of years before European settlement, the Salisbury area was home to the Kaurna People. Many occupational and sacred sites can still be found.
THE SALISBURY HOTEL, COMMERCIAL ROAD, 1885
In 1839 John Harvey, a Scottish immigrant, migrated to South Australia. In 1847 he bought land along the Little Para River and established a township which he named Salisbury after the English city where his wife Ann (nee Pitman) was born. In the 1850s came a post office, railway station, church, police station, courthouse and schoolhouse, all built to support the new settlement. PETS CORNER THE DOG WASH VAN by

I have two big dislikes in my life. The first is going to the vet - it's never happy. The second is going to the dog wash. I don’t like soapy suds all over my body, a purple rinse, having my nails clipped, my tail pulled, and a noisy dryer fluffing up my ears. I'm not the only dog who dislikes the dog wash. My friend Max is a Rottweiler and when the dog wash van came to his street, Max began to moan. Here’s the tale of Max and the dog wash man.
HONK, the dog-wash van roared into Max’s street. And frisky, grubby, smelly dogs were about to get a treat.
I'm Buddy, a friend of Nigella’s. I’m the kid on the block, only 16 months old so I get into all sorts of mischief, like rolling in the dirt. After a trip to the dog wash I get extra frisky. BUDDY
Max lumbered to the dog wash van, His look was all disdain. And because he liked to be unwashed, he growled a moan of pain. "I’m nervous," said the dog wash man. "This dog has made me wary. Oh Max, you’re huge and black and cross. In fact you’re very scary." Max felt the water, sweetly warm engulf his massive frame. The gentle giant was seen to smile. Was Max becoming tame? Time went by and I’m not sure why Max thought ‘enough's enough’ Perhaps an image came to mind, remember MAX was TOUGH.

He skulked off to his kennel, with soap suds on his face. But Max was quite bewildered he knew he’d caused a scene. But why weren’t people grateful? The dog wash man was clean! WATERWHEEL MUSEUM The Salisbury Waterwheel Museum 14 is an historic water 16 wheel restored and re-established in a new brick building in Pioneer Park.
Built for Frederick Heinrich Kuhlman in 1899, the wheel was originally installed on his property surrounding the Old Spot Inn, which he also owned. In 1982, around 40 years after the wheel stopped working, it was removed from the original location and later restored by the Rotary Club of Salisbury in cooperation with the City of Salisbury and the Salisbury & District Historical Society.

It is now housed in the Salisbury Waterwheel Museum in Pioneer Park which opened on 21 December in 1986. When an operator turns the wheel on you can see it spinning. The museum also contains historic photographs and information.
