In time, Covid will be accepted as just another disease and we will learn to live with it, but the changes it brings are profound.

The Covid Revolution has put the spotlight on LOCAL. Many people don’t want to go to crowded places to shop or party.

They have discovered the benefits of working from home, have been inventive with new businesses, and turned to online trading. They are avoiding big cities and large social gatherings and finding new forms of local entertainment.

Residents tell me they want to shop local, like Yichun Wang who I met in the park. She was walking with young children in the holidays and I was walking Nigella. She said she reads all the ads in Northern Living because she does not want to venture outside her safe environment (see page 4). Have you ever heard of anyone reading ALL the ads in a magazine?

Other people tell me they value easy, free parking in the suburbs, and local tradies who can come within 24 hours because they don’t have far to travel, and professional clinics that can give you an appointment the next day. It seems that safety and convenience are the driving forces of the times.

To make it easy for you to access local, in this issue we show how to find a local school, (page 9), enjoy local entertainment, (pages 6, 7 and 24) and make new friends with Probus (page 19).

Pinball closes It’s a shame that GameRoom Essentials in Salisbury has been forced to close - a victim of the pandemic. When I was a teenager we used to spend hours playing pinball and games in the video games arcade. It was a really vibrant place. Hem Galea Travelling tourists Tourists to our town largely come by motorhome or caravan. They bring their big rigs and their germs into rural communities.

They contribute little to the local economy.

They eat and sleep in their vans, walk their dogs/kids in the local park, use the community toilet block and public facilities, stroll up and down the street to stretch their legs but don’t buy anything, fill up with petrol and leave. They are a nuisance on our roads and a bother when our towns have to clean up the toilets, dirty BBQ, rubbish and dog droppings after them.

Don’t come Too bad the Salisbury family had an unhappy time when they went on holidays in rural SA (NL/Feb). Despite all the tourism hype, country people really don’t appreciate city people coming into our towns plundering our supermarkets and pharmacies. J Austin Resident Dog Hi Nigella, your review of ‘Resident Dogs’ (NL/Feb) sent me straight to the internet to order both volumes. I love dog books and these are two of the most elegant books I have seen, but I agree with you: more Aussie houses and their canine residents would improve the book!

Easier Green Waste Recycling Last year Council introduced FREE green waste bins for all homes that don’t have one, as well as a FREE benchtop kitchen caddy (funded

by Green Industries). The kitchen caddies, which come with a roll of compostable liner bags, make it easier for residents to dispose of organic materials such as food scraps and other organic wastes before it ends up in your green bin. Delivery started 17 January and will take a couple of weeks to reach all households that have already registered. If you have a green bin and don’t receive a caddy but would like one, please register at salisbury.sa.gov.au/foodwaste to have one delivered during the second phase of the rollout in May. GOING INTO YEAR 7 This year government schools in South Australia will bring Year 7 into secondary schools to be in step with the rest of the country. This will enable students to have access to specialist facilities and teachers.

Catholic schools moved to Year 7 in 2019.

As a teacher in NSW where Year 7 is the beginning of secondary education, over many years I have seen the excitement of primaryaged students going into 'big school' but also the anxieties. Today's Year 7 kids are worldly due to digital exposure and quite sophisticated and I believe by the age of 12 they have outgrown primary school.

SA uses the national curriculum where students in Year 7 to 10 are prepared for civic, social and economic participation and are allowed to make choices based on their interests. They are given a higher degree of independence.

While a new curriculum offers opportunities for incoming students, there are reasons for anxiety and these are best addressed by parents before school starts. Year 7 kids go from being top of the student hierarchy in Year 6 to bottom of the hierarchy where they

are the new kids on the block subject to a new social order. This can be intimidating.

They can have trouble navigating a larger school, finding their lockers, getting to class on time, managing timetables and the expectations about homework and assignments. There are multiple teachers for different subjects, new friends to make and the potential for bullying.

To offer more structure, guidance and safe spaces for younger students, many schools have introduced a Middle School in addition to a Senior School because working with 12 to 14 year olds can be very different from 16, 17 and 18 year olds.

As parents it can be helpful to discuss the challenges your new senior may face and talk about coping strategies. One of the best ways to transition is to join teams, play games, know the names of teachers and plan the day ahead.

Schools are understanding of new students and offer advice (mentors and older students) and leniency if students get lost, are late to class or slow to pick up new routines.

To take the worries away, plan ahead, identify challenges and read up on school rules.

CELEBRATING PROBUS Retired school principal, Ralph Greenham, had us in fits of laughter one minute as he recited an hilarious poem about a senior citizen's christmas party, then he moved us to sorrow when he recited a poem about a country farmer who was suffering deep anxiety during the drought.

Ralph was the guest speaker at the Probus Club of Mawson Lakes at its February meeting. Born in the country Ralph admits he has an affinity with bush ballads. “I try to bring the character into each poem I recite and leave my audience with a sense of wicked fun or sadness,” he said.

Probus is a worldwide organisation with clubs throughout Australia. In February it celebrated its second year in Mawson Lakes. The well organised social club meets each month in the Mawson Centre where a guest speaker entertains the gathering.

Events coordinator Faye Martin has a range of outings planned for 2022 including bus trips, museum, gallery and zoo visits and luncheons in lovely places. "Our diverse membership of retirees likes social interaction so we plan visits with morning teas and luncheons to new venues and we like to mix with other Probus clubs." ED

DOG SCAM ROBS FAMILY My friends up the road who love to play with me decided it was time to get a puppy of their own.

They looked up the internet, found an adorable puppy - white and fluffy, not too big - a bit like me.

“Yes, that’s the dog for us,” they said, so they paid thousands of dollars to buy the puppy and told everyone in the neighbourhood to expect a new arrival.

The children had a name for their new puppy - Zoe. A few weeks later an email arrived to say the pup was ready, but the new owners needed to pay for a dog carrier box, vaccinations and interstate transportation. Looking at a picture of the cute puppy from the online sale, they willingly paid another thousand dollars. Weeks passed and no arrival. Where was Zoe? Emails were unanswered and the family didn’t know what to do.

Sadly, it turns out they were victims of a puppy scam. The police told them that dog scams are a sophisticated, multi-million dollar rip-off and scams are increasing.

Here is the advice police give to would-be dog owners: Beware of online sales where

email is the only contact point. Ask to meet the seller and see your puppy before you make any payment. Take photographs and get an address and phone number. Research the seller online using exact wording from the advertisement to see if your puppy appears on multiple sites. If in doubt about a seller seek advice from a reputable dog breeding association, vet or local animal shelter. If you think you have been scammed tell your bank, the police and go to scamwatch.gov.au Our friends were heartbroken, not just for the loss of money but for the loss of Zoe. They had bought a doggie bed for her, a collar and lead, biscuits and brush. What a cruel, wicked deception. We are all so sad and shocked.

I told the children they could come over and play with me anytime until they get a puppy of their own.
