SEA of SUSTAINABILITY

Each year the

City

of Salisbury hosts the Watershed Creative Prize, inviting creatives to submit artworks that best capture what sustainability means to them.

For the last nine years, Northern Living magazine has carefully selected an Editor’s Choice Award winner to publish on the cover.

This year, we were drawn to the depth of texture and contrast of colour in Mawson Lakes resident Jean Bates’ Sea of Sustainability.

Jean spent her childhood years living in Port Lincoln, and her love of the beach and sea has clearly influenced this piece.

The winning painting (featured on this month’s cover) shows the constantly changing movement of sea and sky, implemented with a relaxed freedom of expression that shows a real trust in her abilities. One can almost smell the salty sea air and feel the spray as it hits the shoreline.

No stranger to the Watershed Creative Prize, Jean has entered both poetry and art pieces in the past, she took home the Mayor’s Choice

Award in 2019 for her painting Dawn’s Choice and has sold several of her entries at the large scale exhibitions in the John Harvey Community Hall.

Despite not having a ‘formal’ education in art, Jean has availed herself of various private art tutors over the years. Starting with portraiture, dabbling in oils & watercolour, then developing into inks & acrylic mediums, her artistic style has continued to grow and evolve.

Jean shares her love of art with locals of all ages, teaching a group of Aged Care residents and running ‘Mini Picassos’ & ‘Paint & Sip’ art classes both privately and corporately.

COME AND TRY: MAWSON LAKES MODEL YACHT CLUB

Mawson Lakes is a beautiful area for a variety of leisure activities such as walking and bicycle riding and the boat shed on the main lake provides the perfect base for watersports such as canoeing, rowing and model yacht sailing.

The Mawson Lakes Model Yacht Club (MLMYC) is a friendly model yacht sailing club whose members come together regularly from various backgrounds to enjoy their sailing experience.

The public who stroll around the lakeside enjoy seeing the clubs using the lake and, in the case of model yacht sailing, quite often stop to ask questions and some even “have a try” at the sailing

Our members enjoy the relaxed environment and take part in mildly competitive courses as well as casual cruising around the lake at their leisure.

This is not a rushed experience but a more relaxed social outing which, after the trials of Covid, is something to be enjoyed and much appreciated.

An AFTER DARK sail was enjoyed by sailing members and the public at the end of March.

The small boats, under thousands of little lights, sailed to the Promenade and were a very special sight to see.

Look out for our next event under lights on the 29th of September this year, just before Daylight Saving starts. It will be well worth your while!

The Club also successfully hosts State & National titles events at Mawson Lakes, and recently participated in a special Easter Family Fun Day on the Promenade organised by Councillor Beau Brug for the Community’s enjoyment.

Prospective new members are encouraged to “Come & Try”. Our main sailing days are Tuesdays & Saturdays with additional events in between.

AFTER DARK SAIL

Be sure to put our next AFTER DARK SAIL on your calendar 29th September 2023!

BUILD YOUR OWN MODEL YACHT

In addition to the social sailing of model yachts in various categories, the club also runs boat building workshops on alternate Wednesday nights.

Utilize the expertise of club members at their workshop nights every second Wednesday or alternatively purchase a kit boat to assemble yourself or with help from other members.

For those without the capacity to do a DIY build, you’ll often find members with second hand boats for sale and several willing to help build a new one to order.

It is a relatively inexpensive sport to get into with most boats fitting comfortably in the

family car and some smaller models carried in the caravan when holidaying… just in case an opportunity arises for a sail “somewhere else”.

New members are always welcome at the MLMYC. Come on down to the boat shed and say hello. You’ll find a friendly face there every Tuesday, Saturday and every second Wednesday from 6pm.

Follow the club on Facebook and Youtube or contact the President by email or phone for more information. See details in the advertisement below.

Meet and make new friends whilst enjoying this fun activity suitable for all ages.

TASTE of HOME SA: WINNING HEARTS & TASTE BUDS

Para Hills restaurant, TASTE of HOME SA is a family owned & operated takeaway business serving up a delicious selection of classic and inventive modern pizzas, flavourful creamy pastas & tasty Lebanese BBQ meals and wraps. Since taking over management of the boutique eatery in the Wilkinson Road Woolworths complex earlier this year, new owner Farah and family are quickly winning over local hearts and tastebuds with their house made pizza dough, sauces and marinades. Customers rave about the generous serving sizes, affordable prices, friendly service and delicious food.

The food was incredible and it was great to come along to support a new local business run by locals. I couldn’t stop talking about how much I loved the Skewers or Tawook Chicken Pizza!

YOUR AREA

COBBLER CREEK RECREATION PARK

is located between Salisbury East and Golden Grove.

The main entrance is at the corner of Bridge and Smith Roads, Salisbury East. You may also enter off The Grove Way. Vehicle entry gates open from 6:30am to 7pm (9pm during daylight savings time).

Take a peaceful stroll on one of the park’s scenic walking circuits and enjoy the rare woodland and grasslands that form the habitat for Adelaide’s native wildlife.

If you’re up for a more challenging hike, you can climb to the top of the park for refreshing views of the Adelaide plains and valleys.

Depending on your route, you will encounter fascinating historical ruins from the area’s rich European

farming past, or see local plants and animals that were an important part of life for our First Nation’s Kaurna people.

If you’re a mountain biker, you’ll find a variety of trails and pump tracks for beginners to experienced riders. There is also a jump trail.

Friends and family may prefer to simply gather at the picnic grounds next to the Kites and Kestrels natural-look adventure playground.

Gas up the BBQ and recline on grassy and sheltered areas while the kids try out the playground flying fox and climbs inspired by tree-top raptor nests.

Other points of interest are the ant city and bee hotel that kids can explore and appreciate our interconnectedness with these small living creatures.
