The storm season for South Australia is approaching and all residents need to be prepared for gale force winds, flooding, high water and fallen trees. SES advises that the main storm season for South Australia is August, September and October. Coming fresh from the devastating floods and evacuation centres on the east coast, Teela Cumberworth, Team Leader Rescue, South Australian State Emergency Service (SES) was speaking at a Neighbourhood Watch meeting about ways to prepare for an emergency which can strike in a flash. She advised people to prepare an EMERGENCY PACK FOR DOCUMENTS and put it in a safe but easy to reach place. Things to include are photocopies of your driver's licence and other licences, passport, credit cards, bank details, medications, medical and health cards, your Will and Power of Attorney, birth and marriage certificates and a list of contacts. If using photocopies, get legal documents certified by a JP. In emergency situations, including house fires, people are stressed with little time to gather important documents that may be 8 all over the place. They can arrive at a crisis centre without any verified identity, and a lack of identity can create big problems and long delays for a person fleeing from disaster. I am following the SES advice and am preparing a folder with essential information. I have given a copy to my accountant. It has taken me weeks to put it all together. When I took out my passport I found it had expired so that was a job to do, and it took many weeks to organise. ED
