One is a shortage of skilled labour, and the other is a small market in Australia for products. So what can be done to overcome these obstacles?

It seems that reports of abuse and harassment are everywhere—in the legal profession, the fire service, as well as political parties. Bullies are in homes, down the street, in both public and private service. But not all men behave badly, and I’m pleased to say that in my experience, good men far outnumber bad men. As a teacher I believe that a lot of behaviour starts in the attitudes boys learn at home in their formative years. As Mr Finlay said in Community Conversations in the April issue: “It is not the job of teachers to teach sex and relationships, it is the job of parents.” Picking up on this comment, Northern Living offers an article on Raising Beautiful Boys. See page 25. June is traditionally the onset of flu season and it is also the host to Men’s Health Week so this month we put the spotlight on your health and wellness with a special liftout feature highlighting some of the fabulous medical and allied health providers in the area. COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS Illegal parking Parking vehicles across a footpath is illegal. So too is allowing any part of a vehicle (including a towbar) to project onto a footpath. Footpaths are council property. It is also illegal for private vehicles to travel across council property or to park on council grounds. The City of Salisbury Council has been issuing fines for illegal trespass and parking. Nodding Heads Politicians go to great lengths to stage photo ops - think of hard hats, talking to toddlers, and hi-vis vests. But spare us all the nodding heads of bureaucrats and other politicians in the background, standing closely behind the speaker, nodding an agreement at every comment. While it may be ego-boosting for the hanger-ons, it’s annoying and distracting for the viewers. Benedict Parnell What to do with waste We want to do the right thing in our garbage bins but it’s hard to remember what goes in which bin. It’s confusing about milk and drink bottles. Do we remove the lids, and if so what do we do with them? What is soft plastic? How about waste disposal companies tell us what to do. A good place to educate the community is via this community magazine that everyone reads. But keep it simple. Gary Schnell, Parafield Gardens. Motor Sports City streets were not designed for racing cars and the mayhem that goes with such events. We now have purpose built race tracks at Tailem Bend and Mallala and this is where motor sports should be staged. I say, good on Premier Steven Marshall’s for banning motor racing in the city. The SA Minister for Innovation and Skills, David Pisoni MP (pictured), who grew up in Salisbury, was the guest speaker for Bizweek at the Northern Business Breakfast in April. He said that the Poor mail service We could not get a post office at Mawson Lakes no matter how hard we tried. Is it any wonder when the CEO was busy showing largess with bonuses for her executives. I posted a letter in the Mawson Lakes mailbox on Friday last week to Marion. It did not reach its destination until Thursday of the following week. This is an abysmal service and the CEO of Australia Post needs to be accountable, and deserves to be replaced if she cannot supply a decent postal service. B H Ordriscoll, Salisbury South Contract cheating Some years ago there was an item in Community Conversations about contract cheating. I was surprised that students would pay for someone else to write their assignments, but a report last September by the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency found that contract cheating is rising on a global scale as online learning increases. No trains for Salisbury Northern rail users are suffering. The rail line should have been electrified years ago when federal funding was granted in 2008. Preparation didn’t start until 2010 when the line was closed for four months. This included replacing sleepers between North Adelaide and Mawson Interchange but nothing happened. In 2011 the line was closed again for seven months between Mawson Interchange and Gawler Central. But in October 2013 federal funding for the Gawler line was cancelled. With the incoming Marshall Government (2018) funds were injected back into the project, but disruptions to supplies due to the pandemic and the collapse of SA Structural have slowed progress. The latest promise is that the rail line will be open by the end of 2021 but only two of the 12 new electric trains will be ready, with

the others to come on line in 2022. Hopefully. David Whitluck, former rail commuter, Salisbury Dog attack My wife was walking in Shoalhaven Circuit when she passed an elderly man walking his dog (small white dog, thick build, terrier cross maybe) on a leash. She said hello to the man and he nodded, and then all of a sudden his dog lunged forward and bit my wife on her ankle and would not let go and shook it’s head from side to side, tearing my wife’s sock leaving puncture marks. Very frightening. It was clear the elderly owner could not control the animal. Even when another man walked past on his way to work, the dog growled and lunged forward to attack him. The owner had to struggle to hold him back. I suggest that old people and young children do not walk unfriendly dogs.

Live or die on our own terms It was heartbreaking to watch the slow, agonising death of my father last year, so I am pleased that SA has introduced a euthanasia option, but why limit it to terminal diseases. Make it a person’s right to determine when and where they die. Euthanasia should be available to people with dementia, old people who have lived long enough, people with mental illness or anyone else who feels they cannot cope anymore. Allow people the freedom to live or die on their own terms. Raelene Marks

POURS INTO MANUFACTURING PLANT IN SALISBURY Building for the future in a solar age, Tindo Solar has expanded it operations in Technology Park with a $12 million investment in a high-tech manufacturing plant.

“Tindo, which is an aboriginal word meaning sun, is the only manufacturer of solar panels in Australia. The panels are made and designed for Australia’s harsh conditions where temperatures can reach beyond 40 degrees.

“Timing is everything in business,” said managing director Glenn Morelli.

The company offers both residential and commercial models along with batteries that are subsidised by the Home Battery Scheme to store the energy produced from a home’s rooftop panels.

“COVID has highlighted Australia’s over-dependence on imports. We find that people are keen now to support local business and are appreciating the quality and reliability of our product that is made in Australia to suit Australian conditions.”

AGRI-FOOD Situated in the heart of Salisbury is a unique cafe where a lot goes on behind the scenes. Cafe 91 is an outward sign of a specialist training school known as the Independent Institute of Food Processing (iifp). Training kitchens behind the cafe are full of students during the week learning about food preparation, baking, hospitality, coffee making and customer service. Director of the training organisation, Stephan Knoll said that his aim is to nurture young people so they can make a contribution to the local

community. Providing skilled work experience is the way he does it. Stephan begins at school level and looks for students with a spark for the Agri-Food industry. He then ignites that spark by outlining the opportunities in an industry that can take a person along many career pathways. "Apprenticeships, scholarships, work experience and government incentives are there to help young people achieve, and we navigate

access to these incentives,” said Stephan who started his career in the family smallgoods business where he saw a need for the agri-food industry to improve their practices. He began teaching which led to bigger things, and in 2002 he started iifp. Today iifp is focussed on the concept of Paddock to Plate, developing a reconnection between eating and an understanding of where food comes from. ED

When Paula Darch and her family went through a chapter of trauma and guilt after a shocking diagnosis, Paula felt isolated. For a short period, she lost her voice, and one of the toughest challenges she faced as a parent was watching her kids lose theirs. Many parents are not sure how to establish positive self-esteem in their sons, so the editor, who has taught boys in many schools throughout Australia, offers tips on raising respectful boys. Show that you believe in your son and encourage him. Don’t let your son’s flippant or nonchalant reactions prevent you from complimenting him. When your son responds with: “You’re just saying that because you’re my mother,” respond with an affirmation of pride; “Well I am your mother and I’m proud that you are my son.” Expect some help at home. Chores and responsibilities communicate to your son that he belongs to the family. As a valued member of the family, sons need to share the load. Take an interest in his interests. You might not enjoy listening to your son’s music, but see if you can find something good in it such as the words of the song. Don’t complain about the music, rather ask what is it that appeals to him? Listen to his opinions without necessarily having a wise response. Help him explore his ideas further. Let him know that it is acceptable to have different opinions.

Go out of your way to help your son achieve something that is important to him. It shows that you care and that he has your support. Take an interest in his school work, hobbies and sport and enjoy his achievements. However, be honest and praise only when praise is warranted. Don’t praise mediocrity. Keep your son involved in the family. It is important that he attends family celebrations and occasions. This will build a sense of unity and a sense of belonging. Don’t give him the option to not attend. It is OK for your son to make mistakes; it is how most of us learn. Talk to him and offer support rather than berating him with a lecture. Teenagers who feel supported and secure within their family usually develop a healthy self-esteem. When boys feel they are accepted, loved and valued they will radiate confidence and grow up to be good husbands, fathers and community members. City foxes

While international travel is restricted to most of us due to the coronavirsus, there’s one little part-time resident who flies herself from Adelaide to the Arctic every year, an amazing distance of 12,000 km.

One night just as we were coming home from an evening walk, I could see two bright eyes shining in the dark in the parklands along the railway line. In the street light near our house I could see it was a fox with a big bushy tail. As soon as it saw us it took off; and I took off after it ... In the background I could hear mummy desperately calling me but I wasn’t going to give up. Up the dirt track and through the scrub I raced in hot pursuit.

Foxes like the city way of life. It’s easy. The can build a den in the wetlands, along the railway line or even under a house or deck. They scavenge for food at night and will eat anything, so if you throw out scraps for the birds it's likely a fox will eat the food ... and maybe the bird.

I chased that fox as far as I could until it slithered under the railway fence and across the railway line. I called defeat and headed back home. Mummy wasn't happy.

They look for food left out for pets, or dog bones left in the yard and they steal ducklings from the lakes. They eat throw-away rubbish such as chips, half eaten hamburgers and bread. A meal of backyard chickens or a rabbit is a gourmet dish.

Fox mating season is June to mid July when foxes are known to scream. I can hear them at night and it drives me crazy.

The safest thing is to keep your surrounding clean. No food, no fox.

This globetrotter is the Grey Plover, a small migratory bird that rests along the Australian coastline in our spring and summer, then heads north to breed in the northern summer in the Arctic. She can fly as much as 7,000km in one flight. To track these birds and discover their migration routes and stop-over sites in order to protect them, scientists have attached solar-powered satellite tracking devices to the birds. Here is what they discovered. One tagged bird who left the Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary* set off on her marathon journey in March and flew northwest across Australia’s central deserts. She landed in Kununurra in WA and then headed out over the Timor Sea to Indonesia. After flying over the islands of the Philippines she landed in Taiwan to refuel her engine and rest for a few weeks - a well deserved stop-over after a flight of 7,340 km. By the end of May it was time to leave Asia, so she spread her wings, crossed over China and steered for Russia to catch the northern summer in June. Her destination was a protected sanctuary in Siberia where she built a nest in the dry open tundra and laid 4 eggs.

When her chicks turn two years old they will make the trip south to escape the cold winter in Russia. The females do this every year. The males do not. * The Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary stretches from the Barker Inlet near the Watershed Cafe in Mawson Lakes, for 60 km north to Port Parham. It is a National Park. The sanctuary plays a crucial role as a resting and feeding ground for migratory birds who forage on the mudflats and mangroves for small molluscs, worms, crustaceans and insects. ED

The steel ball symbolises Technology Park, a place where thoughts are collected and organised towards the development of ideas. Adelaide artist Margaret Worth who designed and created the artwork says the sphere is a form that represents both the world and a single atom. “Through a collection of cells, a pattern of complexity within simplicity is created,” she said.
