Having breakfast with my friends at St Louis Cafe on Lakeside
It was a hot summer morning when I joined my friends for breakfast at St Louis Cafe overlooking Sir Douglas Mawson Lake at Mawson Lakes.
Avocado on toast and freshly squeezed orange juice was my order and we sat outside on French-inspired furniture under the shady trees, catching a gentle breeze along the Boulevard. It was a gorgeous way to start the day watching people jog around the lake, walk their dogs, and push prams. St Louis is new, bringing a European flavour to the northern suburbs. The beginning of a new year introduces a new Pantone colour that reflects what is taking place around the world. This year Pantone VERY PERI brings the colour blue characterised by violet and red undertones. As we experience unprecedented change, the colour displays a spritely joyous attitude that encourages creativity and imagination. This issue we splash the 2022 colour in the pages and on the cover of Northern Living to keep on trend with global colour language.

COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS Scammer or not? Early December 2021, I received a phone call on my mobile. No caller ID number. I had never talked to the person before. Wanted my personal information – full name, date of birth etc – before they would proceed with the call. I refused. My policy is no ID to incoming calls. Then I was told if I didn’t comply, they could not help me. I still refused and hung up. Someone else rang back and said maybe I would prefer a male (instead of a female) without a foreign accent. I was insulted at such a sexist and racist suggestion and said so. He then added that unless I agreed to work their way, I would not get any help. Is that how scammers work? Was it a scammer or a government department? Name supplied but withheld Water usage goes up Everybody knows the disruption caused by covid but here’s another you may not have realised. During the pandemic the 3 adults in my house underwent home isolation and our water bill went higher than ever before. We used the shower
the same, but had time to take a bath, we used the toilet more and we washed the dishes more due to home cooking. We had time to do some gardening and to wash the car and the windows around the house. What a shock when the water bill arrived. An aerial survey reveals that Adelaide is one of the least green cities in Australia with scant tree cover compared to the eastern
states. It shows that only 26 percent of Adelaide’s population lives in leafy suburbs, compared with Brisbane at 79 percent. Weak SA tree protection laws allow developers to cut down established trees and destroy canopy. Pitching for Adelaide to become a National Park City was an act of dishonesty, and the international committee who awarded it, a study of gullibility. Trees say thank you Your article on caring for trees in the October magazine was so helpful. I followed your advice. Took a walk around the streets to see what trees were adapted to my local area. Went home and planted a new tree and watered the trees I have and the ones on the street. Pulled out the weeds around the trees, made a shallow hollow and added some mulch. Going regional Ignore the tourism hype to holiday in the regions. We have just come back from travels in SA and find that the usually friendly people would prefer we were not there bringing germs into outback towns. Pubs are closed, swimming pools are empty, dining rooms and cafes are shut, petrol is expensive and locals are keeping their distance. Not a happy holiday. Salisbury Family

URBAN WETLANDS
in Salisbury If you are looking for somewhere local to go for relaxation and an outdoor walk in a natural environment, take a look at the wetlands. In Salisbury we have some of the best constructed wetlands in Adelaide. Ecologist engineer Dr Nadine Kelly said wetlands were critical to the liveability of urban areas as climate change brings hotter conditions and more intense rain storms. “Councils are increasingly working with nature to capture and clean stormwater, provide flood protection, cool suburbs and provide habitat for wildlife,” she said. Salisbury has more than 50 wetlands and two have been nominated as Adelaide's top ten. These include Greenfields Wetland at Dry Creek Mawson Lakes and The Paddocks Wetlands at Pooraka.

BOOK REVIEW The Spy’s Wife Published November 2021
The Spy's Wife by Fiona McIntosh, is a captivating and suspenseful story set in 1930’s England and Germany at a time when Adolf Hitler was gaining power and rumours were circulating that Germany was preparing for a war. The novel is part thriller and part romance. Young widow Evie Armstrong is running a small cafe at a rural railway town in North Yorkshire where her father is the stationmaster. An attractive man catches Evie’s eye, as a frequent traveller on the train from London to Levisham where he often disembarks to walk the beautiful moors. Suddenly from the moment she meets this man her life is turned from a quiet existence and thrown into the dangerous territory of espionage that takes her from London to Paris to Munich. I was perfectly transported into the narrative as our charming and brave heroine infiltrates the Nazi Party to save the man she loves. Evie crosses paths with famous figures in history such as Hitler, Industrialist Ferdinand Porsch, Julius Streicher the Northern Fuhrer and other SS officials whose profiles are significant to the tension. Fiona McIntosh lives in South Australia and I have heard her speak on several occasions telling her audience how she roams the world meticulously researching the locations for her historical novels. She has a wonderful way of combining historical fact with intriguing fiction and always an endearing love story. ED

RESIDENT DOG: INCREDIBLE DOGS AND THE
INTERNATIONAL HOMES THEY LIVE IN My name is Nigella and I'm a Resident Dog in Adelaide. I'm a spoilt little girl with the complete run of my house and yard. I live on a finger lake and enjoy wonderful wetland walking tracks in Mawson Lakes. Mummy and I love the Resident Dog books. I was given a copy of Volume 2 for Christmas and we settled down to read it in the holidays. I’d like to make a few comments from a dog’s point of view. This book is put together by Nicole England, an
architectural photographer so she is particularly interested in interior design, but we are interested in dogs and how they interact with their space, so in EVERY picture we search for the dog of the house. It’s disappointing when there is no dog in the frame. A picture of a chair or a modern artwork may be attractive but WHERE'S THE RESIDENT DOG? I curl up next to mummy on the couch as we look at the book together, but Vol 2 is too big and heavy. Mummy’s arms ache holding up the book. The author comes from Melbourne so how come there are only 2 Australian houses in Vol 2? And none in
beautiful Adelaide where we have some stunning places and pets. South Australia is a doggie dense society, and our working country dogs are stupendous. One Aussie kelpie recently sold for $36,000. Wolla, but mummy assures me she wouldn’t sell me for triple that price! The arty photography in Resident Dog is superb coupled with lots of enticing words that mummy reads aloud while I look at the pictures. We hope there will be a Vol 3 in time to come with more Aussie dogs please. Resident Dog Vol 1 is available from the library. Not sure about Vol 2.
A dog makes a house a home by adding warmth, action and love, and is the first to find the perfect vantage point regardless of expensive furniture, heritage considerations or design aesthetics.

This ecological parkland demonstrates how stormwater from the Dry Creek catchment enters the wetland and is cleansed as it slowly passes through different sections. Wetland plants together with natural processes filter out the nutrients, sediments and pollutants, ensuring dirty storm water does not enter the sea and adversely affect the marine environment. The entrance gate to the wetlands trail is open between 9am and 4pm. If locked you can get an access key from the Watershed Cafe located off the car park. Plenty of parking is available.
