All I want for Christmas is a splash of brilliant colour from my red and white petunias.
Nothing says Christmas to me more than a garden full of seasonal colour. I planted my petunia seedlings in pots last month and they’re blooming beautifully so I’m sure I’ll get my wish. When Northern Living asked locals what they would like for Christmas, we got interesting responses, such as the man who wants “more fishing gear and a few mates with boats”. Who said this? Take a look on page 6. Before you go away for the holidays check your cyber security. Northern Living asked international cyber expert Deniz Subasi what we should do to keep cyber safe. He says that technology is moving so fast it’s hard to keep up. If people don’t understand the technology they are leaving themselves wide open to abuse. His advice is to “tighten up your devices”. COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS Polluting populations Those in the northern-hemisphere are putting pressure on Australia when it comes to climate change, but compare the figures. We are a county of 25 million people in a land mass of approx 7.7 million sq km. The US has a similar landmass that supports about 330 million. The UK with a land mass of less than a million sq km has a population of 67 million. In Japan’s the capital city alone (Tokyo) has a population around 36 million. We need to do our bit to combat climate change but the figures show we are not a bad lot when it comes to polluting the world. Hal Golden Parafield off the hook The plan to quarantine international students at the flight training centre at Parafield has been scrapped. Under the SA covid roadmap, international arrivals will no longer need to quarantine once the 90 percent vaccination threshold is reached which is expected this month. Darina Wallert, Parafield Teachers at risk Teachers at my son’s school are not happy so it is not surprising to read from the Australian College of Educator’s national survey that 84% of teachers are considering leaving the profession, 76% of teachers feel stressed at work and 82% struggle with kid’s behaviour problems. What are we doing to our teachers? TT Triumph Tax on technology The Prime Minister told the world that Australia will achieve net-zero emissions through technology, not tax. But the SA government’s has

legislated an electric-vehicle road tax. This says exactly the opposite. Ching Ong Tank cars SUVs are the fastest selling cars. But when you look at these big tanks on the road with just one driver, or maybe mum and the kids, it questions how serious these people are about climate change. It takes more than $100 to fill the tank. Makes it hard to take these people seriously when it comes to combatting emissions for climate change. Belinda Haskall Hypocrisy What a joke. Presidents, political and business leaders fly to Glasgow (some in private jets) to ruminate about climate change and global emissions. It is estimated the jets alone added 13,000 tones of carbon dioxide to the global atmosphere. And President of the US arrives in a 20-car entourage. What hope of success? Mark Murray Urban green A nice focus on trees in NL/ Oct. We need to do a lot more to preserve the trees we have as well as planting new trees. Conservation SA chief executive says, “SA has experienced a phenomenal loss of old trees and a National Park City without trees is just a city.” As heatwaves cook our streets this summer we need to think about this. July criticising the man who fathered 4 kids, but when he died boasted 17 grandchildren. Overpopulation is the planet’s biggest problem -too many people worldwide wanting too many resources and products. It’s the reason we dig up coal, mine minerals and sell natural resources such as forests. To feed the growing population we turn good soil into housing estates and salt pans into development sites. Unfortunately I hold out little hope for the planet and feel sorry for the next generation who will have to live with the disasters we have created. Denis Randell Pedestrian rail crossings upgraded Seven existing pedestrian rail crossings on the Gawler line are being upgraded so that when a train is coming, gates will close automatically and alarms and signals will alert pedestrians. Theft of your identity, access to your credit card and bank accounts, redirection of your online traffic to a hostile site, knowing your every move... these are some of the threats for the unwary when they use their mobile phone. “Technology is moving so fast that most people don't have time to understand it," said Deniz Subasi, a digital and cybersecurity consultant and a senior business advisor at the Polaris Centre. "People are unaware how easy it is for hackers to steal their personal information and cause damage." Cyber security is a hot topic because so many individuals and businesses have been affected. In Australia last year $33billion was lost to cyber-attacks according to latest Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) report at www.cyber.gov.au
Be suspicious, read before you click and visit only known websites Northern Living asked Deniz how we can better protect ourselves. His reply was “Monitor all of your devices connected to the internet and be careful on social media and untrusted apps. Don’t download everything you come across. Most applications on your phone may have ability to access your personal information as well. Understand the terms and
conditions and user agreement of software, games and social media you are using.”
Nothing is private online and your profile is very easy to unravel "Make sure you have a strong unique password with as many characters as possible and avoid the most hacked numbers and words such as 1234; the colours red/blue/black; names (yours, kids, pets, heroes, supermum). This information is so easy to uncover.” Other security recommendations by Deniz are to use encryption to protect your personal files and a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to connect to the internet. REDEVELOPED It's been a long wait, but next year the eyesore Emperor Apartments on the corner of Elder Smith Road and Main Street will take shape under a new property developer.
The building started by Frank Barbaros stalled in April 2018 when legal issues halted progress on the eight-storey edifice, set to become the tallest building in Adelaide’s northern suburbs. Now 4 years later Barbaro has signed a joint venture contract with Pelligra Constructions, a Melbourne-based property developer, who wants to reignite the project taking it from a $30million project to $55m investment. Northern Living spoke to Pelligra Group Chairman, Ross Pelligra, who sad the original plan is being updated and resubmitted to Salisbury Council.
“We are developing a project for the community with residential and businesses spaces, shops and food outlets and possibly a hotel to serve the North.” “If the plan is accepted, redevelopment will commence mid next year,” he said. ED

Just in time for holiday viewing, James Bond comes to the movie screen in No Time To Die. 5 steps to control party kilos
It’s party time and I’ve been to Christmas parties where the food was delicious and plentiful and the drinks flowed freely. I could blow all my kilos for one week at one party so I'm taking health advice from the experts to curb my weight gain in the festive season. ED

Here’s what they advise: NEVER ARRIVE HUNGRY If you come to a party expecting to eat a meal you will demolish everything. Instead take the edge off your hunger about an hour before you arrive by having some fruit, yoghurt or some cheese and biscuits. That way you won’t be tempted to eat up big time and you can control your portions and stay aware of your food choices. EAT CANAPÉ SIZE It's easy to indulge in calorie overload, so limit yourself to 3 or 4 canapés. Each one on average will be 200 calories. To compensate have a bowl of soup or salad for lunch for the extra calories consumed at the party. AVOID HIGH-FAT TRAPS There are some party foods that pack a high calorie punch, such as potato chips, pastry based canapés, party pies, sausage rolls and fried foods eg chicken wings and spring rolls. To replace these favourites look for healthy party food such as prawns, lean meat skewers, salads, strawberries and other fresh fruits. CONCENTRATE ON CONVERSATION Go to the party with the aim of meeting people, networking and having fun. Stand well away from the food table or the kitchen doors so you are not tempted to eat when food is offered. Hold onto you glass and drink slowly so others are not always offering to fill your glass or get you a plate of food. These days No Sugar drinks are usually on offer at venues, and sparkling mineral water will keep your glass full of low calorie beverage. COMPENSATE FOR CALORIE OVERLOAD There is growing evidence that periods of light eating or fasting are beneficial for the metabolism. During the party season, include a day or two of light eating each week to help buffer unwanted weight gain. www.northernliving.info

PETS CORNER BED IN A SHED

My name is Dita and I have just turned 8 years old. I’m a Poodle X Maltese Shitzu and a long-time friend of Nigella. She is a wordly dog—widely travelled and always has such interesting places to talk about.
That goat was a little bit scary but the view was worth it
I’m more of a stay at home dog but she told me all about the unique smells of the countryside and I couldn’t wait to go and experience it myself. I’ve always loved a good road trip. Mummy winds the window down and I poke my nose out to catch a whiff of all the exciting things we pass. These days, travelling locally is the only way to go, so last weekend we packed up the car and headed to the Clare Valley to stay in a boutique bed and breakfast called ‘Bed in a Shed (Too)’ The ‘shed’ was designed and built by Andrew, a Clare Valley artist who lives next door with his wife Carolyn and my new friend, Cleo the dog who came by each morning to see if she could steal our breakfast of delicious thick cut local bacon and free range eggs cooked on the outside barbeque. floor, recycled timber paneling and corrugated iron on the walls and roof and hilarious sayings and clever puns dotted around the place. Even Cleo helped to decorate - I found her paw prints embedded in the concrete on the kitchen floor! We spent a lot of time outdoors taking in the incredible valley sunsets. The main bedroom looks out onto the gardens with firepit and a paddock complete with resident goat and chooks. I didn’t mind the chooks but that goat was a bit scary! I think I may be a city girl after all! Inside was delightful—loads of colour, a glorious view looking out to the trees and vineyards and a brilliant log fire. There was even a big old school record player. The humans held a mini dance party and played fun music late into the night while I curled up by the cosy fireplace. My favourite part is having all the family around me.

No longer a problem now that the big companies are moving to SA. C is for Covid. A little bug that changed the world. D is for SA Defence State. E is for Electric Vehicles and the new green environment. F is for Festivals that never went ahead - no singing, no dancing, no hugging this year! G is for Going on holidays in SA and discovering new places and new adventures. H is for House Prices. Great if you want to sell. Too bad if you’re looking to buy. I is for International Students—if you can find any. J is for Jab—to have or not to have? K is for Cross Keys Hotel where truck drivers stop for a drink at the topless bar, creating a covid hot spot L is for Lot Fourteen, an exciting place for start-ups. M is for Mandatory this and mandatory that... N is for Northern Living that weathered the storms. Only cancelled 2 issues, (Aug & Sept) O is for Olympic Games and ParaOlympics. It was all glorious gold, silver and bronze. P is for Parents who took on home-schooling. Really makes you appreciate schools and teachers. Q is for Quarantine; so boring . R is for Rail Electrification; but will the train ever arrive? S is for Submarine Deal. We’re getting new nuclear subs, but not this year. Will report back in 10 years! T is for Trading Hours. Not there yet but Rob Lucas is working hard to deliver this election promise. U is for Ubiquitous masks that kill a smile. V is for Vax confusion. W is for a World in strife facing global warming, rising sea levels & increasing cyber crime (see page 7). X is for Xmas - even if you can’t sit on Santa’s lap! Y is YOUR turn. All I want for Christmas is… (see page 5). Z is for Zero-emissions. The focus for next year?
