There are three railway stations in Gawler so I disembarked at the end of the line at historic Gawler Central Station and walked all the way back to the next station, passing historic buildings, traversing parklands and looking at grand homesteads in Australia’s oldest country town. Northern Living canvassed other train travellers to see what they like about the new service. Read their comments inside. Remember back in 2021 you answered lots of questions in the Census. The results are out and they give a picture of Australians at large - at a national level, state level, and local level. You can drill down to your own suburb. COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS CAPPING RENTS
What a poorly conceived government idea to control owners from raising rents on investment properties. Private property owners have lots of options to counter such a law. They can sell their rental properties in a hot market, turn to sites such as airbnb, offer only short-term accommodation, or refuse to renew a lease then re-advertise the property at a higher price. The variety of entertainment on offer in SA in August is impressive, but I will not be attending any public events as the threat of covid and flu is increasing to nonexperienced proportions. Many promotional photos show people shoulder to shoulder as they shuffle along light shows, or sit in crowded auditoriums, theatres and restaurants. Train travel might be free to encourage people into the city for events, but travellers are not wearing masks, and the thought of all those people in a confined space is threatening. No longer do employees sanitise tables, seating and handrails to curb the spread of infection. The SA government has taken the decision of Economy over Health. JOB VACANCIES
Why is it that there are so many job vacancies when there are so many unemployed people. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that the sectors experiencing the highest jump in job vacancies in May were retail and trade (38 per cent) media and telecommunications (18 per cent) and arts and recreation services (16 percent). I run a business and have been advertising for staff for many months, with no satisfactory applicants, so I share the frustration. Edward, Salisbury
GRANDPARENTING
Enjoyed reading opinions from Nanas in the June issue. It prompted me to pick up a new book from the library called Grandparenting Grandchildren (2022). I’m learning about new research on the architecture and function of the child’s brain and how the first 5 years are critically important to lay the foundation for a child’s future level of intelligence, personality, health and mental stability. It’s an easy-read book that I can recommend for anyone caring for young children. Connie Albert

There’s never enough parking close to a transport node. That’s why shopping centres are having a problem with commuters who park for free in shopping centres then hop on trains and buses to travel to the city for the day. To overcome the problem, shopping centres are installing boom gates, setting time limits and charging fees to use their property. FREE TRAVEL FOR SENIORS
Seniors can now travel for free, at any time, on all Adelaide Metro trains buses and trams. You need to have a SA Seniors Card which is available to anyone over the age of 60. PROBLEMS WITH SAWATER
SAWater has a poor record of disrespect for its customers and I hear a lot of dissatisfaction. As for me, I own a property in Mawson Lakes that has an average water bill of $180 so I was staggered to receive an invoice for more than $2,100 last quarter. On enquiry to SAWater they told me there was leak. I acted with haste to repair the leak and a plumber found a concealed leak under the house with no visible outward sign. Then, in the latest quarter I received another invoice for $500 for the same leak. I do not consider it acceptable for SAWater to throw invoices at owners in this way. If there is a leak (especially a concealed leak), SAWater should have a system in place to alert the property owner immediately. Smart metres would be able to do this but they are not in place in the Salisbury area. The new Minister for Water is Dr Susan Close. I urge anyone with problems with SAWater to contact her and urge a Review of SAWater, which is what I have done. Linda Vining, Mawson Lakes

Speaking at a Mawson Lakes Neighbourhood Watch meeting Mayor Gillian Aldridge said this will be the highest building in the North. It will employ 450 people to deliver the project. Local residents voiced their concern about traffic congestion during the building and operation of the site which is already a congested intersection. Council said they would monitor the traffic situation. ED

Going to Market by Nigella
Oh goodie! It’s Saturday morning and that means we’re off to the farmer's market at Parafield Airport.* The day starts with a beauty splash - clean face, brushed tail and combed ears so I look my best for the many people who will talk to me. Mummy puts on my warm jacket and straps me into my doggie stroller so I can see everything and I’m not underfoot. She hangs her shopping bags on the handlebars - we’ve got this jig sorted.

First stop is the orange stall where the farmer from the Riverland brings his fresh, sweet oranges to sell. Mummy fills up a whole string bag of organic oranges and hangs the heavy load on the stroller, then off we go to buy nuts, avocados, hydroponic tomatoes and homemade dumplings.

We wave to the German baker whose husband has fashioned the cutest little caravan to keep her and her cakes out of the wind and weather. In summer she puts out colourful tables and chairs, but not today because it’s winter and windy. Mummy likes Sophie’s Greek stall where she reckons she buys the best baklava in Adelaide. The secret is in the honey; Sophie produces her own honey on her country property. “Half a dozen eggs please,” says mummy to the stall that sells fresh eggs from the back of a van. Opposite is a stall that sells coffee beans and John makes me a milky doggyccino. Spoilt I know. Dancing and singing takes place when we stand in front of the busker with a guitar. Mummy swings and sways the pram and sings a few notes as we move along towards my favourite spot where Marie always gives me a doggie treat. Finally, we pick up a bunch of fresh flowers as we head back to the car with our bountiful booty. *Parafield Market is behind The Parafield Airport Liquor Store, close to Roulettes Tavern

Population figures for Salisbury Data released from the 2021 Census, by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reveals insight into the rapidly changing face of Australia, the makeup of families and the way we live.
Population
Salisbury has 146,000 people with even numbers of males and females.
In August 2021 the census counted 25.5 million people in Australia. Almost half of these people have a parent born overseas. After Australia, India was the largest increase in the country of birth, overtaking China and NZ. Now let’s see the demographic profile for the Salisbury Local Government Area. The Salisbury population is very well educated. The biggest campus of UniSA is in Mawson Lakes so there are a lot of students in the area which accounts for the young age demographic and the high level of education. 23% of the Salisbury population is recorded as tertiary educated.

All aboard! THE TRAIN BETWEEN ADELAIDE AND GAWLER The Adelaide to Gawler rail line is up and running. The new electrified line is the culmination of a $900m project which began in 2008. The electric trains can reach a maximum speed of 110km/h compared with 90km/h of the replaced diesel-powered trains. Other significant differences include the quietness of the electric trains, their faster acceleration and improved passenger comfort including heating and airconditioning. The new trains have computerised systems which can take control in an emergency and everything is monitored with black box recorders to track journeys, sensors along the track to monitor trains and internal and external cameras that take continuous recordings. The trains will be serviced and cleaned at a large depot at Dry Creek.
