A: The term “rent bidding”

describes the practice in which prospective tenants offer a rent amount higher than advertised to secure a tenancy.

Given that the vacancy rates in Adelaide are very low, rent bidding has become a popular method to be considered for a residential rental.

Unfortunately, this has impacted the already competitive market, forcing tenants to offer rents above their affordability and placing them under financial strain.

Additionally, the bidding process tends to favor prospective tenants with more financial resources.

What is rent bidding and is it illegal in South Australia?

Effective September 1st 2023, the South Australian Government has made rent bidding illegal. This means that landlords or agents can only advertise a property at a fixed rent and cannot advertise with a rent range.

Furthermore, properties cannot be listed for rent auction and landlords cannot solicit higher rents above the fixed amount.

Rubbish spoils the landscape Every morning I walk around the main lake but I am alarmed at the amount of rubbish I see. More council rubbish bins would help, but better still, take your rubbish with you and keep Mawson Lakes beautiful.

Tourist overload in popular cities is making life unbearable for residents who are protesting at the commercialisation of the landscape. The environment, and heritage are suffering, not to mention congestion on local roads and streets. I have recently been in Venice where the government has introduced a fee for day-trippers entering the city on peak days in summer when the invading crowds outnumber the local population. I believe Venice is the first city in the world to do this, but other cities and sites are looking at ways to stem the hoards by culling cruise ships, setting quotas, introducing bookings and limiting visitor rights. email: office@northernliving.info Oasis for disability drying up The article on the new learning centre in ML for people with disabilities (NL/Oct) precedes a change to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) being reviewed by the federal government. The scheme was designed for 1 in 50 Australians when in fact 1 in 5 people has a disability, hence the scheme is under pressure and not financially sustainable.

I have a son with autism and I fear that his individual NDIS plan may cease. The federal government is calling on state and local governments to carry the excessive load by providing disability services through local welfare and care organisations, schools and early childhood centres, but where will these institutions get the trained staff and resources to do this?

It seems the NDIS ‘oasis in the desert for people with disabilities’ is about to dry up.

PEACE ON EARTH Celebrating its history of making the world a better place to live, the Rotary Club installed a Peace Pole in Mobara Park.

Addressing Salisbury council members, students from local schools and Northern Living Magazine, Vice President of Rotary Mawson Lakes, Dr Manoharan, said that the Peace Pole bears a universal message embedded in four different languages reflecting the linguistic diversity of residents in Mawson Lakes.
