OUR MISSION Northern Light School is committed to providing a high-quality education for children from all socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. The faculty and staff create an atmosphere where every child can grow academically, emotionally, physically, and spiritually, to become healthy, productive members of their families and communities. The focus is on academic excellence as well as nonviolence, acceptance of differences, respect for the environment, and the moral advancement of humanity, so that our children develop an understanding that they have a responsibility to make a difference in the lives of others.

Dear Northern Light School Community, Thank you for your generous support this past year. I look back fondly on the many ways our community showed up to give back to Northern Light School. In my rst year as Head of School, it has been remarkable to see how consistently our faculty and families turn out for our students. The culture of Northern Light School is one of care for one another and a commitment to preparing our students to become thoughtful global citizens. It was wonderful to feel the endless energy of the Annual Jog-A-Thon, the joy of our Winter Concert, and the warmth of our more intimate Spring Gala. Your giving this year allowed us to improve our classrooms with the purchase of Promethean Interactive Displays (aka smart boards) for every K-8 classroom. Your generosity made a direct impact on our students’ education and showed them how much you care about their experience. I hope you know how important you are to all of us at Northern Light School, and how your engagement improves the lives of our students, faculty, and community. None of this is possible without you. Northern Light School, an independent nonpro t serving preschool through eighth grade, has transformed the lives of thousands of children for more than three decades and was born from a simple conviction: that every child, regardless of socioeconomic or cultural background, deserves an education that nurtures the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. Since opening its doors on September 11, 1989, with just twelve students and four determined women at the helm, Northern Light School has grown into one of the Bay Area’s most distinctive independent schools. Its story is one of grassroots idealism, community resilience, and an unwavering belief that education is not just preparation for a career, but for a meaningful life. The school now serves approximately 140 students in preschool through eighth grade, with a student-to-teacher ratio of 10:1. This intimate scale allows for the individualized attention and deep relational bonds that have always been the school’s signature.

The curriculum encompasses a full range of academic subjects along with art, music, Spanish language, science, and STEAM programming. The school has also developed a dedicated High School Prep program, administered by Maureen Marshall since 1995, that prepares eighth graders for the transition to high school. Additionally, Northern Light School’s teachers have a signi cant voice and agency in shaping the school’s curriculum, pedagogy, and school culture—an approach consistent with the school’s founding ethos.

ALUMNI CORNER: THE MOODIE FAMILY
Northern Light was a beacon of light for our family after we had fallen on dark times within the Oakland Uni ed School District. Our eldest child, Talei, had struggled through two tumultuous years at an OUSD middle school—experiencing bullying, ostracization due to her not being Black enough or White enough, and feeling like most of her teachers just didn’t see her. We came to Northern Light and immediately felt like we were being given a life preserver. Being accepted as an 8th grader and making the trip to Montana changed our family’s trajectory. NLS became our home-away-from-home, and eventually we were able to get our other two kids enrolled. All three of our kids graduated from Northern Light School. Today, our eldest child Talei has graduated from Cal State Fullerton with a business marketing degree, debt-free thanks to a soccer scholarship. She just moved to San Diego and had her rst ever art show where she sold all of her pieces. This month she started a new job with Insight

ALUMNI CORNER: THE MOODIE FAMILY 04 Our middle child Tiko is entering his junior year at San Jose State. He is also working on a business degree with an emphasis on nance, and also plays soccer on scholarship. He played for Project 510 this summer and trained heavily with the Oakland Roots. Our youngest child Venina will graduate from high school this fall and begin attending college early for—you guessed it—soccer! She will begin at Texas Christian University in January. She is currently ghting for a spot on the U17 World Cup team that will compete in Morocco this fall. Northern Light is a special place because of the loving, family-style approach to seeing and feeding the whole child. The staff and teachers that they attract understand the assignment: enrich each mind, giving students a solid sense of self through experiential activities and assignments that mix skill mastery and thoughtful exploration. It’s safe and nurturing through the vision that Michelle Lewis started so many years ago and has continued through her daughter Caitlin’s careful guiding hands. We are so thankful for the support that these women plus several teachers have extended to our family, during our kids’ time at

PARENT SPOTLIGHT: Q&A WITH ARIANA MARBLEY
Q: If you could describe NLS in just a few words to someone who's never heard of it, what would you say? A: If I could describe NLS in just a few words to someone who’s never heard of it, I would say Northern Light is a place you want to go when you want to see what happens when a vision and magic come together to create extremely bright futures. Q: What made you choose NLS for your child, and what has that decision meant for your family since? A: We chose NLS for our children because we immediately knew upon walking through those doors that something was different. We knew that our children would be loved, cared for and most importantly, seen. By staying at Northern Light, we gained a second family. My oldest graduated in 2024 and it is so heartwarming to see his class make plans to hang out at Northern Light on their days off. This is a testament to how NLS continues to hold a special place in the hearts of their graduates. It reminds me time and time again, how we made the best decision to entrust our boys with NLS. It’s an amazing feeling to know that not only are our children loved on, but our entire family has been loved on since day one.

Q: Can you describe a speci c moment this year when you saw your child grow academically, emotionally, or socially, that you credit to their experience at NLS? A: I constantly saw Jalen growing academically throughout his time at NLS. All of his teachers pushed him to be his best because they knew that he could give more. They never allowed him to settle, which, in turn, allowed him to gain con dence and see just how brilliant of a student he is. He would have the biggest, most con dent smile on his face after the light bulb would turn on. For him, it was important to see his growth and the teachers knew and fostered an environment for him to thrive. For Landen, I saw him grow emotionally in leaps and bounds. Landen is very hard-pressed to emote publicly. During his eighth grade retreat, I was sent a photo of Landen reading the letters that were sent with him. He was obviously crying in this photo and one of his best friends from preschool had his arms wrapped around him. Landen allowed himself to become vulnerable in this moment as he leaned into his friend for comfort. This was trust that had been built through the years. While some in society will look down upon Black boys and men showing emotions, NLS continually made space for them

to feel safe and protected enough to show their emotions.

Q: Why does individualized, relationship-based education matter so much for your child, compared to other options you considered? A: Prior to coming to Northern Light we looked at multiple options. We looked at public schools, charter schools, which were just gaining momentum here on the West Coast, and other private schools. What stood out with Northern Light School was the relationship that NLS had with the students. You could tell that each educator took the time to know each student. They were keenly aware of the needs of each student whether academic, emotional, or social They rose to the task every single time. This awareness is imperative because this is how we reach the goal of educating the entire child. When a child feels safe and loved in their educational environment, you allow the entire child to show up authentically. As a result, you get a well-rounded, con dent student. This is what we

wanted for our boys.

Q: What do you wish more people, especially donors or supporters who’ve never visited, understood about what NLS actually does day to day? A: I wish people knew how incredible NLS is. I would tell them to rst walk through the door and sit in the front of ce just for a few moments. Pay attention to the amount of students owing in and out. It’s similar to triage at a hospital. Students come in asking for everything under the sun, from an ice pack to a change of clothes. Sometimes they just want an extra dose of love and attention. The amount of patience that is shown day in and day out is mind-blowing. As you continue to walk down the main hallway, you get a glimpse of how special this place is, from the shadow-boxes of mementos, to past and present student photos, current artwork, and written pieces. You begin to feel the magic of NLS, almost as if you’re being transported into a bubble of pure joy that you don’t want to escape from. Lastly, as you make your way outside, you get to see the teachers playing soccer, hide and seek, or basketball with the students. Watching this gives you a clear view of how the bond that started in the classroom extends onto the playground. You hear the screams of laughter from the playground and you see all the smiles, this makes you realize that these kids are living out the dream of why this school was created. It makes your

FUNDRAISING HIGHLIGHTS: PRESCHOOL Thanks to the generous support of the Bernard E. & Alba Witkin Charitable Foundation, Northern Light School's preschool program is thriving. This partnership has made it possible to welcome a full classroom of young learners, expand access of before- and after-school care and provide tuition assistance so that more families can participate. Beyond enrollment, we’ve invested in the spaces where children learn and grow, reimagining our outdoor play area with a new shaded gazebo and refreshing classroom materials rooted in the Montessori philosophy that guides our youngest students toward curiosity, independence, and joy. We are deeply grateful for the foundation’s commitment to our children and to our community.

LEGACY & IMPACT
As of 2026, Northern Light School will have touched the lives of over 4,500 students and produced over 400 graduates. 100% of graduates have been accepted to private high schools nationwide, and 88% have attended a private, parochial, independent, or boarding school. Alumni have pursued careers in medicine, technology, the arts, education, law, and public service including the military, as well as a wide range of other elds. However, the school’s impact cannot be measured in placement statistics alone. Graduates understand their responsibility and opportunity to make the world a better place: young people travel through life carrying the values of compassion, courage, con dence, and creativity instilled in them from their earliest school days. By every available account, this is what the school has accomplished and should be known for. The school’s motto “Impossible is Nothing,” the words of Muhammad Ali, captures the spirit of possibility that has de ned Northern Light from the beginning. It is a phrase that propels students past, present, and future and is a re ection of what the founders proved in 1989 when they opened a school with only twelve students and a vision of what education could be.
