Ice Storm Closures Linger While the March ice storm can feel particularly far away when we’re in the midst of 80-degree temps, sunshine, and summer humidity, the storm’s damage is still affecting northern Michigan. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources reports that “roughly 60 percent of DNR-managed trails in the region remain temporarily closed” and over “1,200 miles of state forest roads remain impassable.” The good news: The DNR has been working for months to clean up and reopen other public access areas, including “19 state parks, 54 state forest campgrounds and 162 boating access sites.” To see places still closed or impacted by the storm, visit michigan.gov/dnr/about/newsroom/storm-recovery. And DNR staff remind us to be aware of leaning trees, broken branches, and other debris that could cause hazards while we explore the great outdoors.

spectator By steven Tuttle The United States Senate has passed the socalled Big Beautiful Bill (BBB) and sent it back to the House as this is being written.

Some version of this travesty may already be law by the time you read this, but it is crystal clear it isn’t going to help most of us.

allowed to establish its own rules and regulations for eligibility and use of Medicaid services.

The bill, at a minimum, makes corporate tax breaks the last Trump Administration passed permanent and increases them, along with tax breaks for some individuals.

Not surprisingly, the billionaire and multimillionaire classes will fare considerably better than regular working folks.

According to the Pew Research Center, as of January 2025, 71.4 million Americans qualified for and utilized Medicaid and another 7.1 million children utilized the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Here in Michigan, the Michigan Health and Hospital Association (MHA) says we have 2.66 million of our residents enrolled in Medicaid and another million children in CHIP, about 27 percent of our population.

So, big pharma, big oil/gas, big tech, big chemicals, the big dogs in industry will get the big tax breaks. Those who mine it, drill

it, or chop it down will do especially well.

The argument, as always, is that they will use the extra money to hire more people, to undertake innovative research, to develop/ release new products and to reward their employees.

But we already saw such a tax break, and we know the companies did almost none of what we just mentioned. Instead, they paid down debt, rewarded executives with huge bonuses, and, mostly, bought back as much of their company’s stock as possible, reducing the total shares in public, which increased the value of those shares.

The richest individuals will also receive the biggest tax breaks, according to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO). Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, Donald Trump—the who’s who of MAGA billionaires—will realize big breaks. Alas, those making around $50,000 annually might see a tax break of $300 or less.

The “conservatives” now in charge, and their puppet masters pulling the Project 2025 strings, are adamant about wanting to reduce the annual deficits and the overall national debt. But the BBB will reduce federal income considerably, adding to both the deficit and the debt.

No problem. Supporters in Congress have conjured up a nifty bit of reverse Robin Hoodism, taking from the poor and giving it to both rich individuals and corporations.

They will find, they claim, Medicaid waste and fraud totaling nearly $1 trillion over the next decade. They are assuming— incorrectly, if we are to believe prior attempts at rooting out Medicaid fraud—a system awash with lazy bums and scammers.

Medicaid is a joint system of the federal and state governments providing healthcare coverage to lower income adults, children, pregnant women, people with disabilities, and some senior citizens. Every state is

every state. KFF (formerly Kaiser Family Foundation) reports that nationally 64 percent of Medicaid recipients already work (it’s 60 percent here in Michigan) and many of the rest have legitimate reasons they are not working but still qualify—they are over 65 with limited income, they are disabled, or they are a caretaker for a disabled family member, among other reasons.

The CBO says the Senate version of the BBB will reduce Medicaid spending by $930 billion over the next decade. No investigation by any organization, government or private, has ever uncovered that much fraud or waste. The only way to achieve those kinds of savings is to find a way to boot people out of the program.

The CBO says 10.3 million Americans will lose their Medicaid coverage by 2034, most because of a new, burdensome bureaucracy.

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities says the number will be somewhere between 9.7 million and 14.4 million losing their coverage. Whatever the number, some now legitimately covered will lose that coverage.

Those folks instead will be relegated to emergency care only, forgoing regular medical care for trips to the emergency room or urgent care. Preventative care also goes by the wayside, meaning crisis intervention will be their only medical care, a wildly more expensive option with significantly worse outcomes.

Our elected officials who cower in fear every time the current president clears his throat simply do not care. When confronted with the staggering numbers who will be at risk when they lose Medicaid coverage, Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa said, “We all are going to die.” And Mitch McConnell, the retiring senator for Kentucky said, “...they’ll get over it” when coal miners in his state complained about rural hospitals closing.

Take from the poor, give to the rich. We all die. Get over it.

THE MAGIC IN THE PAUSE

by Kate Lewis There’s something about July that makes you feel like you’re supposed to be doing more. The weather is perfect, the water’s warm, and the region’s buzzing with energy—must-see this, can’t-miss that.

And with that comes the pressure. There is this unspoken expectation that we should be out there squeezing summer to the very last drop. Like summer is some kind of competition, and we’re all racing to see who can enjoy it the most.

I’ve felt it. That tug to fill the calendar, check off the bucket list, optimize the fun. As if summer is a limited-time offer and I better get my money’s worth.

Sometimes we find a toad. Sometimes a feather. Always something worth holding in little sandy hands. And when we stay out past bedtime to catch a sunset from the water or watch fireworks light up the bay, those are the moments I want to remember. That’s what I want them to remember, too.

Here’s the shift I’ve felt most as a parent: I’ve started doing the math. My kids are four and five. If I’m lucky, I have maybe a dozen summers like this—with them fully mine, still small, still reaching for my hand on the trail or in the water. And I don’t want to miss these versions of them because I was too busy trying to make our outings

But this summer, I’m trying to look up more.

Breathe deeper. Move slower. Let summer unfold instead of trying to control it.

But lately, I’ve started resisting that pull. Not because I’m against having fun, but because I’ve finally realized when I try to do it all, I end up experiencing almost none of it. So this is a reminder—mostly to myself, but maybe to you too—that the best thing you can do in July is slow down.

Watching them learn to swim in the bay, use gears on a bike, and feel brave enough to cannonball off the dock. Finding bugs.

Picking flowers.

I mean really slow down. Not the kind of “slow” where you’re still checking emails on the way to the beach or rushing to get that pastry at the farmer’s market. I’m talking about the kind of slow where you stop trying to do summer and just live it. Where you let go of the curated calendar and allow space for surprise. For stillness. For actual presence.

This reminder isn’t just for parents. This is for anyone who feels that tug. The people with mile-long to-do lists and Instagram feeds full of other people’s curated summers.

Somewhere along the way, we turned leisure into another performance.

The funny contradiction is, I’ve never had less free time. I’m raising two small kids. I work. And somewhere in there, I’m supposed to walk 10,000 steps and eat 100 grams of protein. But this summer, I made a conscious change to ditch the family schedule, toss the daily routine. I don’t want to miss my favorite season because I was too busy trying to check it off like a to-do list.

I’m trying to show up for the little things.

Like a slow paddle down the lower Platte River, drifting through the dunes until I’m suddenly out in the big blue of Lake Michigan. Or an early morning bike ride on the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail, when the park is still quiet and the wildlife outnumbers the people. Start in Empire at North Bar, stop for coffee in Glen Arbor, dip your toes in the Crystal River, then cruise back with a packed cooler and a towel ready for the beach. That’s my kind of perfect day. Or sneaking in a sunrise run along the TART Bayfront, when the water is calm, the air is still, and the whole bay feels like it’s holding its breath.

So maybe instead of filling every weekend with events, we leave a little room for things to happen on their own. Say no to a plan and yes to spontaneity. Eat ice cream for dinner. Let the kids stay up too late. Let ourselves sleep in. Leave the laundry. Jump in the lake. Just be in the day.

That doesn’t mean ignoring all the amazing things happening around us. July in northern Michigan is bursting with possibility. But this summer, I’m trying to look up more. Breathe deeper. Move slower.

Let summer unfold instead of trying to control it.

Say no to the grind. Say yes to what’s right in front of you. Trade the calendar for a quiet morning, the checklist for a cannonball, the rush for a deep breath.

Because the real magic of summer? It’s not in the plan—it’s in the pause.

The Hard Way An unnamed Bristol, Connecticut, man was charged with burglary, trespassing and criminal mischief on June 22 after he tried to enter a public building through the chimney, the Associated Press reported. According to police, the man's dog was trapped in the building's restroom after the doors automatically locked, and rather than call for help, he tried to shimmy down the chimney but got stuck. Firefighters responded and had to remove parts of the chimney and building, causing $5,000 to $10,000 worth of damage.

He was eventually freed and was unharmed.

"If he had just contacted police in the first place, we might have been able to avoid the situation," said Erica Benoit of the Bristol parks and rec service.

The Entrepreneurial Spirit A mother, father and adult son in Havlickuv Brod, Czech Republic, have pleaded guilty to running a fake dental clinic in their home, the Associated Press reported on June 19. They all face up to eight years in prison for the ruse, during which the son would look up how to do procedures (including extractions) on the internet; the mother, a nurse, would assist, and the dad made prosthetic devices. They raked in about $185,000 before being caught after a patient consulted another dentist about complications following treatment.

The Passing Parade Neighbors in one Indianapolis area flocked to North Pasadena Street on June 18 to see a remnant of the storms that had moved through: a large white dome deposited in the road. WRTV reported that people drove or walked by to see it and even had their photos snapped in front of it. The sphere is believed to be a radome, a weatherproof structure that protects radar antennae or other equipment.

"We've not seen anything like this," said neighbor Kirby Jarvis. "Lock the doors, stay inside, aliens, you never know."

Wait, What?

The South China Morning Post reported on June 25 that a 64-year-old man underwent surgery in Anhui province to remove a toothbrush that he had swallowed when he was 12 years old. Mr. Yang had begun to feel a strange sensation in his stomach, so he sought medical help; he told doctors he had been too afraid to tell his parents at the time of the incident. He also thought the toothbrush would dissolve on its own. But 52 years later, the nearly 7-inch-long brush was lodged in his small intestine, and doctors worked for 80 minutes to remove it. Dr. Zhou said the brush was stuck in a crook of the intestine and hadn't moved for decades.

What's in a Name?

Police in Portland, Oregon, finally caught up with a man who had fired gunshots at them and led them on a high-speed chase on June 20, KATU-TV reported. The Milwaukie Police Department said they took Loony John Franklin Toon, 42, into custody on June 23 and charged him with first-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault and fleeing from the police. That's all, folks!

On June 19 in Silver Creek, Minnesota, a car that was "swerving and weaving" hit a curb and careened into a scissor lift, which

workers were using to fix a light. The New York Post reported that the car then slammed into a tunnel wall and flipped. One worker, Benjamin Kidd, 27, sustained life-threatening injuries; another managed to hang on to the light fixture until first responders could help him down. Driving the car was none other than Patches Magickbeans, 34, of Wisconsin, who was allegedly intoxicated; police said he was babbling and reaching for objects in the air that weren't there.

Officers found psilocybin mushrooms in his car. Magickbeans' bio on his Instagram page says he is a "womb wisdom keeper" and "corn juggler."

Repeat Offender Jacky Jhaj, 39, has been on Britain's sex offenders list since 2016, but that didn't stop him from arranging a mock wedding to a 9-year-old Ukrainian girl at Disneyland Paris on June 21, the BBC reported. Police were alerted to the event by an actor who had been hired to portray the father of the bride; about 100 other extras were recruited to take part. On June 23, Jhaj was charged with fraud, breach of trust, money laundering and identity theft. His other notable offenses include hiring hundreds of children to act like fawning fans at a fake film premiere in London in 2023. He films the escapades and uploads them to a YouTube channel. The fake wedding, which included a cake and musicians, took place at the Sleeping Beauty castle and was reported to have cost about 130,000 euros, but it's unclear how he funds the projects.

It's a Mystery The French Interior Ministry reported that about 150 people were pricked by syringe needles during a nationwide music festival, according to CNN. Over the weekend of June 21, French police detained 14 people in connection with the "spiking" incidents, which left some victims feeling unwell. Some were hospitalized for testing. One 22-yearold concertgoer said she went to the hospital and then filed a police report. "I told myself maybe it can have an impact," she said.

Bright Idea Out in ski country, employees at Breckenridge Ski Resort in Colorado hit the slopes in early June for a completely different event: the Mountain Cleanup Day. KDVRTV reported that 150 workers cleared about 780 pounds of debris off the mountains -stuff that had fallen out of pockets or flown off skiers as they schussed down the runs.

Unusual items included a hamburger flipper, a $2 Canadian coin, piles of ski poles and a message in a bottle, which turned out to be a COVID-19 vaccination record. The resort hopes the cleanup will remind people to "pack out what you bring in."

Freak Accident A lifeguard in Asbury Park, New Jersey, was trying to set a chair umbrella in its holder on June 25 when it got away from her and ended up impaling her through her shoulder, WABC-TV reported. "She fell backwards off the bench and the umbrella came with her ... and landed on her arm," said lifeguard Joe Bongiovanni. Firefighters cut most of the pole away but left a piece about a foot long in her arm before she was transported to the hospital. She is in stable condition.

SWEET CHERRY CLAFOUTIS An elegant French crustless tart with a northern Michigan touch.

(Pronounced KLAH-FOO-TEE if anyone asks.)

Ingredients • 1/2 cup flour • 1/2 cup sugar • 1/4 cup almond flour • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 4 large eggs • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • Zest of 1 lemon • 1 pound sweet cherries, pitted • Powdered sugar, to serve • Lemon juice, to serve To make the clafoutis: In a blender or food processor, combine the flour, sugar, almond flour, and salt. Pulse to combine. Add the eggs, cream, vanilla, and lemon zest. Blend until smooth.

Refrigerate at least 30 minutes, or overnight.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees when ready to bake. Arrange the cherries in an 8-inch cast iron skillet. Give the batter a stir, then carefully pour over the fruit. Bake for 60-65 minutes until puffed and golden. Allow to cool at least 30 minutes before serving—the flavors will taste better at room temperature. Serve with a dusting of powdered sugar and a touch of lemon juice. Whipped cream is also welcome.

CHOCOLATE COVERED CHERRY POPS What better way to end the day than with a creamy and sweet cherry popsicle?

Ingredients • 1 1/4 pounds pitted sweet cherries, frozen and thawed • 3 tablespoons sugar • 4 tablespoons lemon juice • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 2 cups heavy whipping cream • 1 14 oz. can sweetened condensed milk • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips • 2 tablespoons coconut oil To make the pops: Combine the frozen cherries and their juice with the sugar and lemon juice in a small pot. Cook over medium heat until juices begin to release and the mixture is bubbly. Increase heat to

medium-high, cook until the liquid has reduced by half and appears syrupy, around four to seven minutes.

The cherries will be slightly broken down. Take off the heat. Stir in the almond and vanilla extract. Puree until mostly smooth with some chunks remaining.

Chill until cold.

In a large bowl, whip the cream to stiff peaks. Add the sweetened condensed milk and mix in gently. Fold in the chilled cherry mixture. Divide into popsicle molds. Freeze until firm. To make ice cream instead of popsicles, pour the mixture into a freezer safe container (a lined bread pan works very well).

Microwave the chocolate and coconut oil together in 30 second intervals, stirring between each, until the chocolate is melted. Allow to sit for 20 minutes, then dip each pop. The shell will harden quickly. Keep frozen until ready to eat.

“Full circle.” That’s how Sarah Jarosz, one-third of the indie-folk-bluegrass trio I’m With Her, describes her band’s forthcoming concert at Interlochen Center for the Arts.

The last time Jarosz played Interlochen, it was 2014 and she was opening for Nickel Creek, another beloved indie-folk-bluegrass trio. Now, Jarosz is co-headlining the same venue, and she’s doing it with Sara Watkins, one-third of Nickel Creek, as her bandmate.

The Supergroup I’m With Her, for those unfamiliar,

can most accurately be described as a “supergroup,” the term used for a convergence of musical talents who have already achieved success as solo artists or members of other bands.

Jarosz, for instance, has been making records under her own name since 2009, and has won multiple Grammy Awards for them—including Best Folk Album (for her 2016 LP Undercurrent), Best American Roots Performance (for album highlight “House of Mercy”), and Best Americana Album (for 2020’s World on the Ground).

Watkins, meanwhile, is known best as a member of the aforementioned Nickel Creek. She sings and plays violin in that band, which formed in 1989 when she and the other two members—her brother Sean on guitar and their childhood friend Chris Thile on mandolin—were still just preteens.

Finally, Aoife O’Donovan, the third member of I’m With Her, came to prominence in the roots music scene in the 2000s, as part of a progressive bluegrass band called Crooked Still. She’s since built an acclaimed solo career, with highlights that include 2022’s Grammy-nominated Age of Apathy and a COVID-era reimagining of Bruce Springsteen’s 1982 masterpiece Nebraska.

Together, the members of I’m With Her will take the stage at Interlochen’s Kresge Auditorium on the evening of Thursday, July 10, as one-half of a double bill that also includes Iron & Wine, the moniker for superstar folk songwriter Sam Beam.

Part of a 12-date string of shows dubbed the Robin’s Egg Tour, the show will find the two rootsy bands showcasing tunes from their latest albums. Iron & Wine is touring in support of 2024’s Light Verse, the band’s seventh LP, while I’m With Her is celebrating the release of their second album, Wild and Clear and Blue, which arrived in May.

Deep Roots It’s fitting that this summer’s Interlochen

show will mark a full-circle moment for I’m With Her, because the band’s journey so far has been anything but a straight line.

Jarosz opened for Nickel Creek at Kresge on July 10, 2014, when she was just 23 years old. Two months later, at that year’s Telluride Blues Festival in Colorado, the I’m With Her trio came together for the first time, though it would be years before they’d actually put out an album.

“That was our first real moment as a band,” Jarosz says of the Telluride festival.

“We were all there, booked separately for our own projects, and wound up on this side workshop stage together. And it was just this magical moment of realization that [collaborating] could be something really special for us to do together. And so we did.”

While that festival proved to be the colliding point for Jarosz, Watkins, and O’Donovan, the trio had already been running in similar circles for years—a somewhat surprising fact, given that Jarosz is eight years younger than O’Donovan and a decade younger than Watkins. “[Sara and I] met many, many years ago,” Jarosz recalls. “I was actually nine years old, and she was 19, and I had just

started playing mandolin. Nickel Creek played a show outside of Austin, Texas, which is where I grew up, at a festival called Old Settlers Music Festival. So, we’ve known each other for a very long time. And it’s similar with Aoife; I met her when I was about 14 or 15 years old. So, our paths have been crossing for a very long time now, but the band didn't start until 2014. And the show at Interlochen was right before that all happened.”

Keeping It Special I’m With Her released their debut

album as a band, titled See You Around, in 2018. More than seven years later, the second record finally dropped this spring.

When asked about the lengthy gap between albums, Jarosz gestures at the predictable factors—namely, busy schedules and a global pandemic—before arriving at the big reason: a desire to keep the band and the music it makes “special.”

Broadly, most supergroups end up going down in music history as footnotes,

deemed by consensus as the lesser ventures of storied musicians who achieved greater success elsewhere. Even the great supergroups—The Traveling Wilburys, for instance, which in the 1980s brought together George Harrison of the Beatles, Jeff Lynne of Electric Light Orchestra, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison—are rarely considered to be as great as the sum of their parts might suggest.

Jarosz is very cognizant of the supergroup baggage, and says the members of I’m With Her all wanted to avoid the usual pitfalls. Most crucially, instead of having each musician bring their own songs to the table for consideration by the band, I’m With Her made a point of writing and recording every note of their albums collaboratively.

“I think all of us, with this band, we don’t want it to just be different versions of our solo material,” Jarosz says. “We really want to write music together as a band and create a band sound. And so, I think going into this record, we decided to really take our time with that process. And because of

the nature of our individual schedules, that turned into writing retreats every fall for three years.”

The first of those writing retreats happened in autumn 2021. Little by little, over the course of the annual sessions, Wild and Clear and Blue came together. And while I’m With Her hadn’t played a concert together in more than five years leading into this summer, Jarosz says the band was always thinking about the live show while writing their newest batch of songs.

“The fun challenge is figuring out what we can do with just our three voices and just our three instruments, because, at the end of the day, the songs have to be able to stand alone just with those elements,” Jarosz

explains. “It’s definitely fun to embellish those things over the course of making a record, but we knew that, for our live show, it was just going to be the three of us onstage.”

While I’m With Her will be a threewoman band when they play Interlochen this summer, though, Jarosz says concertgoers can expect one exception: an alliance with co-headliners Iron & Wine.

“I love Sam and love the whole vibe of Iron & Wine, but I’ve actually never gotten to see them live; I’ve just seen videos,” Jarosz says. “So, I’m just really looking forward to it. I think it’s going to be a super complementary evening—with maybe some collaboration thrown in at the end.”

An Iron & Wine primer If you’re familiar with Iron & Wine, you know that Sam Beam is a bit of a musical chameleon. Though his early albums are made up of sparse folk songs with whisper-quiet vocals and little more than acoustic guitar for accompaniment, Beam’s musical universe has expanded over the past two decades. Here’s a quick primer to his 20-plus-year career.

The classic album: Our Endless Numbered Days from 2004, which maintains the delicate intimacy and gorgeous folk lullabies of Beam’s 2002 debut album, The Creek Drank the Cradle, but gives them a wider canvas, thanks to a bigger budget and improved recording/production quality.

The biggest hit: While Iron & Wine has never had a “hit” song, per se, Beam didn’t become one of folk’s modern torchbearers by remaining anonymous. He was particularly omnipresent on film soundtracks back in the 2000s, with his songs appearing in movies like Garden State (a cover of The Postal Service track “Such Great Heights”), In Good Company (“Naked As We Came”), and, probably most notably, the Twilight films (“Flightless Bird, American Mouth”).

The best song: “The Trapeze Swinger,” an epic nine-and-a-half-minute treatise on mortality, death, the messiness of human entanglements, and the great big unknown of the afterlife. Sam, if you’re reading this, please play “The Trapeze Swinger” at Kresge?

The new record: Light Verse, Iron & Wine’s first album in six years, found Beam taking stock of his life and his past from the vantage point of a man about to turn 50. “All in Good Time,” a duet with Fiona Apple, is the stunner—unless it’s “Taken

by Surprise,” a song about how people can waltz into your life, leave a lasting mark, and then leave just as quickly. Either way, expect this rich, contemplative album to form the backbone of the band’s live set this summer.

The live show: Speaking of the live show, fans of Iron & Wine know that a Sam Beam show can range from solo acoustic troubadour to full-on jam band extravaganza. Recent setlists suggest that Beam’s Light Verse tours have featured a little bit of both.

10 Horses to Watch at Traverse City Horse Shows These international superstars are headed to the rings at Flintfields this summer

By Anna Faller With its stalls of designer shopping, chef-worthy dining, outdoor games, and beyond, the Traverse City Horse Shows (TCHS) at Flintfields Horse Park in Williamsburg has become a summertime destination. Of course, most folks are there for the riders and the horses—more than 1,500 in peak season—the latter of which represent dozens of colors, countries, breeds, and titles.

For the casual visitor, keeping track of high-octane events and four-legged competitors can feel like searching for a needle in, well, a hay bale, so we’ve done the heavy hoof-work for you. Here’s our short list of 10 can’t-miss horses expected for the 2025 shows. Saddle up!

Hunters place focus on showcasing the elegance and grace of the horse.

Judges evaluate them based on movement, style, and disposition.

Equitation classes serve to assess the skills and form of the rider. While still an important factor, the horse’s performance takes a backseat here.

Owned by The Bright Lights Group (Lexington, Kentucky) and decorated equestrian Alex Granato, Cupcake showed on the international stage and competed through four-star level jumping classes before making a recent swap to the Hunter ring—a move that has so far proved to be cake! In fact, the pair just claimed the $10,000 USHJA National Open Hunter Derby during opening week of the Traverse City Spring Series, with Cupcake receiving the Platinum Performance Horse of the Week award. Look for him again in July during the GLEF World Championship Hunter Rider (WCHR) week.

Age: 9 Breed: Warmblood Main Event(s): Hunter, Equitation Why Watch: With rider Nick Haness aboard, Dutch Capitol gelding Styled was on everyone’s radar for an American debut during opening week of TCHS, which included clinching top spot in the GGT Footing 3’ Hunter division. Imported from Germany and owned by junior rider, Caroline Freeman (Los Angeles, CA), this up-and-coming equitation horse has quickly ridden to victory stateside, headlined by multiple wins at the Temecula Valley (California) National Premiers I and II in April, and so far, several top-five scores in the Traverse City Spring Series Green Hunter 3’ division and a second-place finish in Hunter Equitation 12-14 with Freeman aboard. (Per TCHS, she has her eyes on her first equitation finals with Styled this fall!)

Age: 9 Breed: Hanoverian Main Event(s): Hunter Why Watch: Characterized by their athleticism, amenable temperament, and elegance, Hanoverian horses are known for making easy work of equestrian sport, and Story Hour from Casalico is the cream of the performance crop. Owned by Double E, LLC and equestrian “go-to” trainer Donald Stewart (a Leading Hunter Rider of the National Horse Show in the nineties), this natural winner of a mount, as described by the World Equestrian Center, took the 2025 season by the bit early on, claiming top honors at the $20,000 Golden Ocala 3’6”-3’9” Hunter Derby (Ocala, Florida.) And with just a few weeks of TCHS completed, the brown gelding’s already earned multiple top-five finishes in the Junior Hunter 3’6 division. As for the rest of the season? This story has only begun!

Eight Ways to Volunteer Outside How you can build, garden, lead tours, and more with TART Trails, the Botanic Gardens, and Grass River Natural Area

By Drew VanDrie Summer in northern Michigan is the pinnacle season—the three-month-long golden stint that all Michiganders pine for while enduring (or enjoying!) the long frigid winter. And while getting outside for recreation is always top of mind, the fair weather also affords ample opportunity to get involved in the community.

Northern Express had the chance to connect with three nonprofit organizations to highlight eight ways you can volunteer, get involved, and make a difference in our beautiful outdoor spaces.

TART Trails First up, we connected with Jonny

Tornga, Outreach Coordinator with TART Trails for some opportunities where those looking to give back can pitch in.

1. Trail Maintenance

Keeping trails clear and accessible is a major undertaking and one that relies heavily on volunteer effort. “One of our big ways to volunteer with our trails is to help out with our trail crew maintenance,” says Tornga.

Each trail system has a designated group that meets twice a month to conduct clean-up.

Volunteers can coordinate with a volunteer group and work on a trail they use or have a connection with, like the Boardman Lake Loop or Buffalo Ridge.

Work tasks can take a variety of forms from trimming bushes to removing invasive species and more. “We have a lot of volunteers,” says Tornga, “and we’re always looking for more volunteers to help build brochure boxes, bird houses, benches. Things that make the trail extra special and easier to navigate.”

2. Work Bees

Tornga notes that TART Trails also puts on several work bees throughout the year to complete specific projects or objectives. These work days can be an excellent opportunity to develop teamwork with coworkers. “Maybe you are the HR of a company and you are looking for some sort of team-building exercise for your organization—you can call me,” says Tornga. “We can set up a special day for you and your employees to hit the trail and make a difference in the community by keeping the trails in good working order.”

3. Tour de Tart & Special Events

TART Trails also hosts numerous events throughout the year that make full use of the trail system. “We have a ton of events,” says Tornga, such as the recent Smart Commute Week and the Rainbow on the Boardman Lake Loop. He adds that these events are always in need of volunteers for set up, tear-down, aid stations, and more.

The biggest event for the org is the Tour de Tart taking place on July 18. “Tour de Tart is our big blowout fundraiser for TART Trail,” he says. A family-friendly ride (no racing!) that traverses from Traverse City to Suttons Bay, the event attracts close to 600 riders each year.

All that distance, riders, and logistics requires plenty of assistance. “We need a lot of volunteers to make sure people stay safe on the trail. We’re looking for crossing guards on each side of the road, all the way from Traverse to Suttons Bay. It takes about 120 volunteers to pull that event off.” traversetrails.org/current-volunteer-opportunities

The Botanic Garden at Historic Barns Park Next we spoke with Karen Schmidt,

board chair of the Botanic Garden. An inaugural member of the org, Schmidt has seen the garden transform to its current splendor and has plenty of suggestions on how to help these beautiful botanicals to continue to bloom.

4. Volunteer Docent

“We have a lot of different ways people can volunteer,” says Schmidt. One way to participate is by becoming a docent.

“That’s where a volunteer learns a lot about the garden and then leads tours,” she says. These docents provide free tours throughout the six days a week the garden operates to individuals or groups, via walking or golf cart. “You can be a docent and tell the history of the site as the asylum farm, and then the actual evolution of the site as a garden and all the gardens within it,” Schmidt adds.

5. Gardener

It may be stating the obvious but the botanic gardens require, well, gardeners!

“We have about 12 main gardens,” says Schmidt. All these are in need of some green thumbs, and volunteers have the option to choose the gardens of their preference.

“You can pick your favorite garden to work on,” she says. Team captains coordinate with a horticulturist to determine the gardening goals for the week, and the captain then messages the team. Volunteers can show up during the week any time during operating hours that works within their schedule.

6. Playing Possum

Lastly, Schmidt highlights that the botanic gardens are always in need of possums! “That’s our grounds and maintenance crew, ‘The Possum Garage gang,’” she says with a laugh. An homage to the Canadian program, The Red Green Show, the Possum Garage gang moniker spawned from a sign left by a previous service department. When the Botanic Garden organization took over the garage space, the sign and the name stuck.

The possums manage the heavy duty work, Schmidt explains. “They drive tractors, haul mulch and composite, and build fences, and do all kinds of really fun stuff. So you could be a possum!” thebotanicgarden.org/volunteer

Grass River Natural Area Lastly, we reached out to Jenn Wright, executive director of Grass River Natural

Area, for her take on ways volunteers can promote, protect, and improve the sensitive ecosystem around the important Antrim County waterway.

7. Planting and Pruning

Much like the TART trail system, the walkways, boardwalks and paths throughout the Grass River Natural area require tending. “We offer Wednesday Workbees,” says Wright. “Sometimes it’s tree trimming, or if you have chainsaw experience, it could be cutting fallen trees.” Tasks can include work around buildings, spreading wood chips, repairing items, or pulling invasive plants.

Along with plant removal, participants can also be a part of upkeep of the serenity garden, native plant garden, and front garden near the Grass River facility building. Wright also hints at a new garden project in the making. “We’re working on a new project with the health department about healthy septic plantings. So, it’s a fun group of individuals that get together!” she says.

8. River Ambassador Program

Individuals looking to be on the water will be excited about the recently initiated River Ambassador Program. Headed by Emma Fitzgerald, conservation director, and supported by two summer interns, the ambassador program is centered around educating and informing users of the Grass River area. “One of them [the interns], is actually being on the river in kayaks during the summer, talking with people, encouraging people to go no-wake and just trying to get the word out about why Grass River is so special,” says Wright, “We would love to have volunteers join them for that.”

Along with paddling and promoting, there’s also a need for volunteers to support several community events centered around the advocacy program. Wright highlights being present at Evening on River Street in Elk Rapids along with other events around the Bellaire area as well. “All opportunities to get out and talk about the importance of Grass River and help our interns out.”

Nine Lives, Nine Animal Nonprofits Up North

And meet some of their recently adopted pets!

Karl Klockars While our feline friends have their apocryphal nine lives, nonprofit animal rescue organizations around northern Michigan save far more lives than that every day. There’s no shortage of animal lovers around our area of the Mitten, protecting everything from dogs and cats to horses, bunnies, guinea pigs, alpacas, and more.

We reached out to a few local orgs for stories about recent animal adoption successes, and if your heart needs a little warming this week, this’ll do it!

1. Cherryland Humane Society Now nearly seven decades old, the Cherryland Humane Society in Traverse City has helped find new homes for animal friends since 1956. This no-kill org houses up to 600 dogs and cats each year as well as caring for animals who need some healthcare and rehab before being housed. To help support those efforts, you can visit their thrift store at 1253 W South Airport Rd. or head to cherrylandhumane.org.

Adoption Story: CHS Communication & Marketing Manager Naomi Pobuda shared this story with us: “Ziggy spent over 500 days with us before finding his forever home. Although Ziggy came from a dog fighting situation, he never once showed signs of aggression. All he wanted was to snuggle with everyone and nap. People were naturally hesitant, but we knew his forever family was out there. The family who ended up adopting him came in looking for a ‘cuddly, laid back, smaller dog’ and although Ziggy is chonky, he is low to the ground and the epitome of a snuggly dog. They fell in love immediately! Now Ziggy spends his days sunbathing, napping on the couch, and getting the love he so deserves.”

2. Little Traverse Bay

Humane Society Nestled in between Harbor Springs and Petoskey, the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society helps find homes for hundreds of animals each year and helps control the animal population by spaying and neutering even more through their in-house veterinary clinic. Helping pets since 1951, LTBHS also offers a “De-Stress With Pets” workplace program to bring shelter animals into the office for a little on-the-clock cuddle time.

Adoption Story: Development Director Jessica Mendezona shared Evie’s story with us: “Evie arrived at Little Traverse Bay Humane Society with severe deformities in both eyes. Thanks to our supporters, she received the critical medical care and surgery she needed to remove them.

Following surgery, our team gave her the love, support, and patience she needed to heal and adjust. Evie’s resilience was inspiring, and we’re thrilled to share that she recently found her forever home with an adopter who loves her dearly. Her journey from pain to comfort, and now to a loving home, is only possible because of the kindness of those who give to our mission.

Stories like this are what make even the hardest days worth it!”

3. Great Lakes Humane Society

Located on a 10-acre private farm just west of Traverse City, the Great Lakes Humane Society helps to house abandoned and unwanted animals in their heated kennels and give them room to run and play while they wait for their new home.

Adoption Story: Executive Director Linda Gottwald told us about a “diamond in the ruff!” named Waldo and his journey home: “Waldo was a hard-luck pup from the start.

He came from Saginaw Animal Control, after a chase through the city’s roughest neighborhoods. Being a handsome fellow, he was adopted shortly after completing heartworm treatment … but then showed back up at the shelter after an unfortunate incident with the family cat. And so he sat at the shelter…and sat…and sat.

Meanwhile, an animal angel named Kathleen and her husband Ted visited the shelter. Kathleen and Ted are the kind of people shelter directors dream of … the kind that walk in and ask who is the LEAST likely to be adopted, which at the time was Waldo. She took him home where he joined a group of senior pooches, four of which came from our shelter!

Other than having to wear a Christmas sweater, Waldo is living his best life with his other misfit shelter buddies.”

4. TC Paw

This feline-focused nonprofit emerged in the wake of AC PAW retiring their rescue program in 2023 and continues their mission to provide a second chance to abandoned cats in the greater TC Area. TC Paw provides foster and adoption services for cats as well as some unique offerings like kitten yoga, a monthly Cans for Cats dropoff, and even their own regular segment on Rock 105 FM. Adoption Story: TC Paw VP Melissa Smith penned this story of salvation for Gracie: “In early February, TC Paw responded to an eviction case where nearly a dozen cats had been inside a vacated home. While most of the cats were safely removed, a few had escaped outside [including Gracie]. Over the following weeks, with a great deal of patience (and a humane trap) Gracie was gently coaxed to safety. Her time outside had left a lasting mark—an ear injury from unknown causes—but the vet confirmed it didn’t cause any pain or impact her health. In fact, it gave her even more character, a unique

feature for a cat who had already proven herself so special. By early May, Gracie was adopted by a loving family who instantly recognized her gentle, resilient spirit, bringing her story full circle—from surviving a harsh winter on her own to finding a warm and secure forever home.”

5. HANDDS to the Rescue

This organization, whose name is short for Helping Abused Neglected Disabled Displaced Souls, is an all-foster organization that focuses on dogs that are hard to place and need extra care. Many of their animals come from animal control organizations or other shelters and receive special help with things like treatment for abuse, help with behavioral issues, or pregnancy.

Adoption Story: HANDDS co-founder Dorothy DeCoeur shared this recent story of a neglected pup named T’challa, now known as Charlie: “When T’challa came into the care of HANDDS last November, he was malnourished and chained outside with his sister. T’challa immediately stole the hearts of his foster families for being a snuggly and people oriented pup.

In spite of that, he was given very little adoptive interest. When I spoke with his would-be adoptive mom, I knew it would be a good match. She asked very thoughtful questions about his past, behaviors, preferences, etc. His adoptive mom also asked why he was in foster for so long even though he is ‘so smart and loving?’ I told her that I wondered the same thing for all those months, but in the end, she and I both believe he was waiting for them to be ready to welcome him as their family.”

6. Wonderland Humane Society

Generations of volunteers have helped thousands of animals find homes with the help of the Wonderland Humane Society,

which has served the Wexford County area since 1970.

Adoption Story: Cassie Harsha of Cassie’s Kitten Cradle, who supervises all the cat fosters and adoptions for WHS, shared this story of a senior cat named Lady: “The most heartfelt story I have encountered happened a year ago. I was fully engaged in an adoption event at our local Petco store when I was approached by a man and his daughter who told me that they were homeless and living out of their car. They then asked if I would take a look at their longtime family member named Lady, a stately black and white old girl who had seen better days. Their request surprised me but my heart melted when I saw their love for this tattered cat. “‘Could you find it in your heart to take Lady into foster care while we try to find housing that would accept us with a pet?’ they asked, and I started to give the standard answer of being over full of cats in foster … but their downcast look made me feel all of the feelings of those of us in rescue know so well. Is it ever enough? What else can one person do?

“I finally gave a sigh and answered, ‘Yes, I can do that.’ The relief I saw in their faces! One year later the man and his young daughter still sadly have not found a home. They call to check in on Lady and make sure she is okay. They also offer to pay what little money they can to help with her upkeep, which, thank goodness, is not needed. This is a hard world for those of us who are down on our luck, including animals. Help when you can. Do what you can. You may be the last hope.”

7. Missaukee Humane Society

This no-kill organization came together officially in 1989 when volunteers converted a local property into a shelter and since then has operated entirely through the help of donations. They’re currently in the midst of a capital campaign to build a new veterinary clinic that will add wellness exams, spay/neuter appointments, and vaccinations in addition to their current ability to provide shelter and foster opportunities for docs and cats.

Adoption Story: Kyle Musselman, executive director of the MHS and LeDoulx Veterinary Clinic, told us about Birdie: “At Missaukee Humane Society, we believe there’s a perfect match for every animal—even those with special needs. Birdie, formerly known as Betsy, is living proof. When Birdie arrived at our shelter, we discovered she was diabetic. While many adopters passed her by, one woman kept watching our site, patiently waiting for the right dog. And when she saw Birdie’s photo, something clicked. ‘I was hesitant at first because of the insulin,’ said Jillian Erla, who had previously cared for a diabetic horse. ‘But when I met her, I knew right away—she was my dog.’ Birdie’s calm nature, good manners, and clear training suggested she had once been someone’s beloved companion. Jillian followed that

hunch and, after some digging, connected with someone who confirmed that Birdie had been a working dog—a cattle herder on a pig farm. In the months since adoption, Birdie has fully lost her vision due to her diabetes, but you’d never know it. MEET THE KARENS Nine local leaders respond to the “Karen stereotype”

What’s in a name? If you’re a Karen these days, perhaps a bit more than you’d like.

Karen was one of the top 10 names for Baby Boomer and Generation X girls, peaking at number three in 1965 before dropping wayyyyyy down to around 600th today, according to The New York Times.

And for most of their lives, these Karens went about their business just as any Leslie, Jennifer, or Susan might. Nothing to see here. But by 2020, the term had become commonplace (particularly on the internet) as a slur to describe middle class, uppity women who are prone to telling other people how to behave or what to do. These are the women who want to see your manager—now!

The whole thing is, of course, absurd. A person’s actions are in no way determined by their name, and the vast majority of Karens are no better or worse than any of their peers. But you can’t put the meme back in the box, and they are now dealing with this phenomenon whether they’d like to or not.

We connected with several high-performing Karens in the region to discuss this nagging stereotype and what it means to them.

Karen Roofe Owner of My Secret Stash and I’m Planty AF in Traverse City, Vice President of Up North Pride, and Vice President of the Downtown Traverse City Association (DTCA – the downtown merchant’s group) Express: What do you think of the stereotype?

Regarding the Karen stereotype, I jokingly introduce myself as “like the evil internet lady” in jest, and it usually gets a good laugh and acts as an icebreaker. Once people get to chat with me, they know me as jovial and helpful. The stereotype hasn’t really affected me, except that it’s a fun joke.

Certainly, when someone “wants to speak to the manager”, I’m quite happy to say, “I’m Karen. Let’s do this!” More chuckles ensue.

Express: Are you trying to change the narrative?

The only thing I’m doing to combat the stereotype is laugh with it and be myself.

Personally, I think it is hilarious and sometimes true. For the community at large, I volunteer to bring balance and energy to my life and those that I interact with.

The Karen stereotype is the opposite of everything I believe in: treating people with kindness and respect, appreciating the importance and beauty of diversity, serving as a role model for children.

Every time I read about a “Karen” situation where someone is cruel, racist, demanding, I want to shout, “Don’t take my name in vain—that doesn’t describe who I am or what I do.”

Express: Are you trying to change the narrative?

There are so many wonderful Karens out there. I know a number of them and see their goodness and the gifts they bring to others.

That’s the Karen I strive to be.

Karen Johnston-Jackson Registered Nurse, Munson Medical Center – Cowell Family Cancer Center Express: What do you think of the stereotype?

I first became a nurse in the late ’90s when there wasn't the Karen stereotype of today. I don’t believe in stereotypes and hate that my name is associated with a bossy, middle-aged woman with a short haircut, chronically complaining, who can’t be satisfied. My patients really don’t comment on my name. Doctors and coworkers on the other hand, well, that could be a different story. As far as my family and friends go, they think I act more like a “Jennifer” or a “Shannon” or a “Kiki.”

Express: Are you trying to change the narrative?

I try to treat everyone with respect and kindness. I treat people the way that I would want someone to treat my mom, dad, or grandmother. Respectfully, with care and dignity.

You never know what someone’s story is and even the “Karens” deserve to be treated with respect and kindness. This is my approach on how I practice at work and the way that I practice life.

Karen Browne President and CEO, TBA Credit Union Express: What do you think of the stereotype?

The stereotype is not who I am and has had no impact on me.

Are you trying to change the narrative?

No, I have better things to focus my time on.

Karen Puschel Segal Retired United States diplomat, now leads a local team resettling families from Afghanistan Express: What do you think of the stereotype?

I’ve never been thrilled by my name. I think it’s because of the way Karen is pronounced in the Midwest. That flat “a” sound made in the back of your throat. Europeans tend to pronounce it with a soft “kah-run” which sounds so much nicer, kinder. So when Karen became a slur (always pronounced with a hard “care” sound), sure it made me even more sensitive. It sounds jarring, plus now there’s a negative image attached to it! Blech.

Express: Are you trying to change the narrative?

After stressing about it to my son, I happened to attend a powerful film at the State Theatre focused on racial stereotypes. After, I called my son and said my issues were nothing compared to what others had to deal with. So I stopped talking about it.

Karen McCarthy Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, owner, Bright Water Counseling Express: What do you think of the stereotype?

Social trends like the Karen stereotype are inevitable and uncontrollable. I’m not sure why my name has become associated with the image of a pushy, entitled white woman, but here we are. At first it bothered me and I used a hashtag “#notallKarens” but I realized that doing so invalidates the very real social problem of weaponizing privilege for selfish ends.

Rather than pushing back against the stereotype, it’s my role as a privileged, educated, middle-class white woman to use the trend to work towards a culture of valuing diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Express: Are you trying to change the narrative?

The Karen stereotype has actually provided me with a way to engage in conversation about privilege. When I introduce myself, I now say “My name is Karen, but I’m not a Karen!” It breaks the ice and helps me gauge people’s awareness!

Kabie (formerly Karen) Stein Editor, Creative Director at Here:Say Storytelling Express: What do you think of the stereotype?

It was irritating when “Karen” meant “annoying woman” and then grating when it leveled up to mean “irredeemably entitled woman” or worse. So a couple years ago, I jokingly suggested resurrecting a childhood nickname, Kabie, and was surprised people actually started using it. But when half the room said “Hi, Kabie” and the other half “Hi, Karen” at Here:Say shows, I knew I had to decide how serious I was about it. Then while traveling, a Lyft driver greeted me with “Hi, Karen” and— without missing a beat—Alexa chimed in through the speakers: “Karen … pejorative slang term … middle-aged white woman … entitled or excessively demanding.” Umm, yeah, call me Kabie.

Express: Are you trying to change the narrative?

I’ve ended up in conversations about the Karen thing when someone has asked why I’m now Kabie or when someone I’m decently acquainted with has used the pejorative in my presence and I responded with “c’mon… really?” Those folks have often left the conversation with a better understanding of why we actually-named-Karens hate it so much, but I don’t have illusions that there’s any hope of moving the needle on this one.

It’s proven to be a pretty durable meme.

Not sure how the Karen stereotype even got started, but I truly don’t pay attention to all the nonsense that is out on social media. I think everyone has a little “Karen” in them. I think women that speak up for themselves are strong, independent women.

Express: Are you trying to change the narrative?

In my experience, you are not going to change people’s minds about things like this. The world has become very opinionated on numerous things, and I choose to live my life without worrying about those kinds of people.

Karen Anderson CEO of Cordia at Grand Traverse Commons Express: What do you think of the stereotype?

I pay zero attention to the Karen stereotype. I could not even accurately describe it for you. It is much more important for me to focus my energy on the community we foster at Cordia. I am fortunate to be surrounded by family, friends and colleagues who also pay no attention to this odd social stereotype.

Express: Are you trying to change the narrative?

Honestly, I am much more concerned with changing the narrative in regards to the outdated stereotypes of aging and senior living. The later years can be a time of continued growth, meaningful connections, and personal fulfillment. It’s time to change the narrative and celebrate the richness of this chapter of life.

Every so often, Northern Express includes stories that were suggested by readers. This is one such story, and it came from Ada Takacs. In her words: “I have been hearing folks refer to ‘Karen’ in a derogatory sense for a few years, with many online comments referring to ‘Karens.’ I got the idea for the article when a man responded to a social media post and said “My 10-year-old daughter is named Karen, please stop using her name this way.” … Karens are our grandmas, moms, sisters, aunts, librarians, nurses and much more. We should give them the respect they deserve.”

10 Finds at Mullaly’s 128 Studio & Gallery Shop these sculptures, paintings, and vessels in Elk Rapids

By Kierstin Gunsberg School’s out and so is the sun! For a cool and creative reprieve, grab the kids and hop on over to Mullaly’s 128 Studio and Gallery in downtown Elk Rapids. (Seriously—you’ll see why below.) That’s where owner Barb Mullaly has been welcoming visitors of all ages for more than 30 years.

“My husband was an artist,” Mullaly says of William (Bill) Mullaly, who co-founded the gallery with her. “He worked for General Motors for like 38 years, but he also was an artist.”

Even now, his presence is still felt in his studio, which can be found filled with his years of paintings and sculptures at the back of the gallery. “He was a painter. He was a

sculptor. And then when he retired, he decided he was going to take up metal smithing… someone called him a Renaissance man. He tried everything.”

He also believed that art should be approachable, especially in price, which is why instead of keeping the gallery’s prices hidden away, each piece is displayed alongside its price tag—that way, no one is falling in love with an out-of-budget piece, explains Mullaly. “My basic philosophy is that you should come in and enjoy.”

And, she adds, that goes for the youngest of art connoisseurs too: “I welcome kids in here. I do. I will have people come and say, ‘Don’t bring the kids in’ and I say, ‘No, bring them in.’ And if they’re really small, carry them because then they can see more things.”

While you’re at it, introduce them to these 10 finds from artists all over Michigan (and some a little further away) and their eclectic mix of mediums, styles, and perspectives.

PIECE 1

Title: Blood/Breath Artist: Nancy McRay

PIECE 3 Title: Brass Sculptures Artist: Scott Nelles

“She’s very prolific. She’s working on a very big piece now,” Mullally says of northern Michigan fiber artist Nancy McRay, whose body of work often shows scenes pulled straight from the local landscape, from Elk Lake to Ayers Road in Williamsburg where she’s based. Woven in the rich blues, greens, and sunset tones that define our region, several of McRay’s wool hanging tapestries can be found at Mullaly’s, including the four-foot-long “Blood/Breath.” On her website, the artist explains that this autobiographical piece explores her connection to living in “this wonderland of water…The very same lakes and river system is depicted inside the area of my lungs.”

One of the biggest (literally, these pieces are quite hefty) finds at Mullaly’s is the collection of brass sculptures by metal artist Scott Nelles, who sand casts from his studio less than three miles south of the gallery. Nelles’ playful pieces range from twee pairs of birds to mid-century, little-green-men era aliens and their accompanying spaceship. His pieces are each designed and cast over hundreds of hours.

Starting at $30, they’re also accessible across budgets, and if one slips through a curious kiddo’s grip, they’re pretty darn durable, notes Mullaly.

PIECE 2 Title: Oasis Artist: Kate Moynihan

PIECE 4 Title: Thorn Vessels Artist: Andrew Madvin

No one relishes being inside during northern Michigan’s all-too-brief summer, but the work of Holland-based artist Kate Moynihan brings the warmth of butter yellow dunes and ochre blooms to any indoor space, no matter the season. Mullaly has several of the painter’s pieces in the gallery this summer, including “Oasis,” an ode to those peaceful moments in nature that live in memory long after they’ve passed. Moynihan, who was once also a gallery owner for over 25 years, “Works with both the brush and the palette knife,” says Mullally, adding, “My husband would love to see that.”

Much less indestructible but still whimsical, the Thorn series by Andrew Madvin features hand-blown glass sculptures from his Thorn Vessels collection. With their lake Michigan hues, these pieces are a statement whether displayed solo or clustered to splash their colors against each other when the sun hits just right. A Detroit native, Madvin studied glasswork at the California College of the Arts before returning to Michigan to establish his studio, Axiom Glass, in Royal Oak with his brother Robert.

PIECE 5 Title: Peaceful Morning Artist: Salina Kalnins In a place where the serenity of a bayfront sunrise is often overlooked during the morning commute, artist Salina Kalnins brings it back into focus with “Peaceful Morning.” Like all of her work, the painting begins with a nautical chart, this one mapping Lake Michigan and favorite NoMi waterways like Good Harbor Bay and The Manitou Passage. Kalnins then layers acrylic over the chart, explains Mullaly, creating a waterscape where the map subtly peeks through beneath. It’s a super cool find for nautical buffs and lake lovers alike.

PIECE 8 Title: Copper Flame paintings Artist: Dan and Frances Hedblom Dan and Frances Hedblom, another husband and wife team, instruct anyone hanging one of their metal art pieces to grab a clean rag and some glass cleaner to “remove your friend’s fingerprints.” And it’s easy to see why anyone would be tempted to swipe a finger across the glossy surface of one of their copper flame paintings. Far from being industrial or cold, these pieces are mesmerizing displays of light, color, and movement, created through a heat-based technique that draws out the natural beauty of the copper used to create them.

While many of the artists featured in the gallery hail from all over the northern Midwest, Kim Bocek is a hyperlocal talent based in Elk Rapids. Bocek’s intricate polymer clay sculptures twist, curve, and lift right off the canvas, creating multi-sensory pieces that beg to be touched.

And for anyone who adds one (or a few) to their own collection, they certainly could!

One of the newest collections to hit Mullaly’s this summer is Sharon Stelter’s clay sculpture series, “All Dressed Up.” At first glance, the earthtoned sculptures look like stone. But hold that gaze for one more moment and the whimsical details—a puffy bird in boots, a lanky bunny sporting overalls—start to pop out and with them, so does the artist’s desire to interpret the world as a simple and joyful place.

PIECE 7 Title: Pin/pendant sculptures Artist: Mary and Spencer Watson “I think these are so unique,” says Mullaly of the wearable sculpture jewelry by husband and wife duo Spencer and Mary Watson.

Though the two artists create their own independent work out of their Chicago studio, they collaborate on these one-of-a-kind pieces featured at Mullaly’s—sculptures that double as pins or pendants. First, Mary gathers beachcomber treasures like agate, pearls, red river jasper, and citrine to shape a Picasso-like figure, then adds one of Spencer’s hand-carved stone faces to bring it to life.

Unique, indeed.

PIECE 10 Title: Paintings Artist: Moira and Douglas Racich While they don’t create pieces together, Mullaly can’t show off one Racich artist without including the other. Douglas, a former dentist turned painter, works in egg tempura and watercolor, painting still lifes from his home studio on the Leelanau Peninsula. His daughter, Moira, works in acrylic, with pieces from her Dark Sky series currently on display at Mullaly’s. The series, which seems to glow even under the gallery lights, is the closest any NoMi explorer will get to experiencing the night sky in all its unobstructed celestial glory… save for a midnight trip to the dunes.

You won’t want to miss these Up North shows

By Ross Boissoneau With concerts at nearly every park, bandshell, casino, winery, and other venue throughout the summer, it’s inevitable that some will slip between the cracks. So we want to provide some direction on a few of these that might not be on your must-see list…but should be.

1. The second annual Traverse City Jamboree at the City Opera House July 10 will celebrate early 20th century American music, including ragtime, blues, and patriotic music. Pianist and vocalist Peter Bergin and his colleagues from the National Ragtime circuit, Jeff and Anne Barnhart, will also lead a tribute to veterans, which Bergin calls an honor. Photos of veterans can be submitted and will be displayed prior to the 7pm show.

7. Bourbon & Brass Company started life as a chamber music ensemble at the University of Louisville. They soon realized they wanted more, and transitioned into a performing group that incorporates choreography, interaction with the audience, and personalized performances. You might find them performing at a brewery, a theater, a church, a wedding—and on July 31 at the Old Art Building in Leland. The 7pm show is part of the free “Music in the Air” series.

Saturdays in the Park is the Metro Soul Band from Detroit on July 12. Now, maybe it’s not fair to call Saturdays in the Park under the radar, as it’s the second year for the free concerts at the Civic Center. But people still may not realize they can catch local, regional, and national acts such as Sears & Sears, Steepwater Band, and the Greg Nagy Band. The eight remaining shows on the slate all begin at 7pm.

3. The forecast is “Mostly Sunny” for the July performances of the Benzie Community Chorus at the Mills Community

House in Benzonia. The 40-strong singing group performs songs celebrating rainy days, and Mondays too. Nearly 30 tunes encompass the vagaries of living in the mitten state, where “You Are My Sunshine,” “Ain’t No Sunshine,” and “Singing In The Rain” may appear the same day. 4. The Bay View Association presents Ragtime July 11

and 12 at 8pm Hall Auditorium. A 50-member cast from across the country joins community members to tell the tale of Black pianist Coalhouse Walker, Jr. and his beloved Sarah; Jewish immigrant Tateh and his little girl; and a wealthy white family led by matriarch Mother in 1903. Bay View Artistic Director Chris Ludwa says the show is supported by an incredible orchestra and is packed with memorable tunes. For tickets ($19$36), go to bayviewassociation.org.

5. The Appleseed Collective is a progressive string band

from Ann Arbor. This acoustic quartet blends the sound of guitar, bass, violin, mandolin, and washboard into a zesty, earthy, and utterly original sound. Catch the band July 18 at Michigan’s largest lavender farm. Lavender Hill Farm is home to 30 varieties of lavender, Italian honeybees, and a restored centuryold barn that hosts live music performances. 6. From July 24 to Aug. 2, it may be hard to escape the sound of music—after all, there aren’t that many places to go on an island. Baroque on Beaver started with a single concert

perform everything from alternative rock, pre- and post-punk, classic and modern country, to current popular music, all “curated in their own personal artistic vision.” Percussionist Jim Dagwell and guitarist/keyboardist Timothy Galante have entertained audiences around the region for 13 years, veering from Johnny Cash to T. Rex to Taylor Swift to Soundgarden.

9. If you’re longing for the sound of a classic big band, check out the 15-piece Foghorn Jazz Band. The group performs at 7pm Aug. 6 as part of Ellsworth’s Concerts on the Square. The band revives the timeless classics of jazz from the 20s, 30s and 40s alongside the likes of tunes by Chicago, Earth, Wind & Fire, and contemporary artists. The Charlevoix area band’s show, like the rest of the series, is free of charge.

10. Fasten your seatbelts, northern Michigan: Elsie Binx is in the house—the historic Cheboygan Opera House. On Aug. 9, The Detroit-area band headlines the first Goth Ball for a cause. A portion of proceeds will benefit the Michigan Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and you can bring a canned or dry good for local food pantries. is as strong as ever. It returns to Interlochen Aug. 14 with David Benoit at the piano. His interpretations of Vince Guaraldi’s classic themes have kept the spirit of Linus, Lucy, and Charlie Brown alive for the next generation. 12. East meets West when Will Marsh and The Integration Ensemble perform at Oliver Art Center in

Frankfort at 5pm Aug. 17. Local natives Marsh on sitar and Josh Mellinger on tabla and percussionist are joined by cellist Crispin Campbell and saxophonist Patrick Booth. 13. Imagine you and me, and a whole lot of friends who

remember the Turtles, Jay and the Americans, Little Anthony, Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, The Vogues, and The Cowsills.

The annual Happy Together tour brings them to the stage at Little River Casino at 8pm Aug. 16 for more than 60 classics by the original hitmakers from the ’60s and ’70s. It had to be. So happy together.

14. Who said hair metal is dead? The sound of crunching guitars, machine gun drums and keening vocals will fill the air at the Venue Event Center in Cadillac Sept. 3 with LA Guns.

• BLACK CHERRY the original since 1964 o CHOCOLATE CHERRY With an old-fashioned but satisfying plotline, dazzling modern camerawork, and a movie star that literally lights up the screen, the new drama F1 is sometimes so realistic you may find yourself smelling oil, grease, or ethanol and swearing it’s coming from the theater.

The f-word here is first and foremost for Formula 1 Racing (a multi-billion-dollar international competition of epic fast cars), but it could also be for fantasy, fame, or fandom, as all are pre-built into this 2 hour 36 minute hype-promo for a professional sport.

For those who “wrench,” the lore of Formula 1 begins with the early European Grand Prix races of the 1930s, the founding of the organization in 1950, and then the motorized advance from inline fours, eights, and V12s to the contemporary hybrid engines combining turbocharging with energy recovery systems and booster rockets. This cool tech-talk and unrelenting pursuit of speed are woven throughout the script, based on a story by Ehren Kruger.

But what elevates F1 into a popcorn experience worth taking in on the big screen is less mechanical and more human, as actor Brad Pitt carries the film with a turn that reminds you of Paul Newman, Robert Redford, or James Dean, if he’d lived to play a middle-aged loner. At age 61, Pitt seems to have found a new effervescence as a performer, with a fearlessness and control of character work that combines wit, charm, hyper-masculinity, and sex appeal into something almost relatable. The actors all trained extensively to simulate the raw dynamics of the cockpits.

The plot itself is a hero’s journey you’ll find familiar. Pitt’s central character of Sonny

Hayes is a driver seemingly at the end of his career, hindered by injury, but still aching to “fly” and addicted to racing forever. When he’s recruited as a last resort to help a failing F1 team compete, Hayes has to prove he still has what it takes. And only mechanical troubles, accidents, meddling investors, or fate itself can stand in his way.

The screenplay is almost classically simple and could fit in a cup holder, but the arcs of success and failure are still there, interwoven with intense racing montages the likes of which you’ve probably never seen (and a cast that looks like a Benetton ad).

Sure, there are major subplots involving a rivalry between the “aging” Hayes and the arrogant hot-shot young gun on his team (actor Damson Idris as Joshua Pearce, a modern social media star who trains for F1 like a video game), or a workplace romance with the attractive chief engineer (played with surprising nuance by actress Kerry Condon), or finally the team’s owner struggling to pay the bills and establish his own racing legacy (Javier Bardem is a nicely cast role). F1 succeeds in spite of an indulgent running time that includes all these side tracks, mainly because Pitt wills it to.

It all felt pretty exciting to me, most of the time, and made me nostalgic for the age of movie stars. With big IMAX cinematography from Oscar winner Claudio Miranda, a score by legend Hans Zimmer, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer behind it, F1 was probably always bound to succeed.

For the most part, director and co-writer Joseph Kosinski keeps the wheels on nicely, even as the audience may sometimes ask of the ending, “Are we there yet?”

life force that animates the universe. It’s divine energy that can be harnessed by humans to make things happen, to speak and act with ardent intention so that words and deeds shape reality. I am pleased to report that you Cancerians are extra aligned with ase these days. Your words are not casual. Your actions are not mild or minor. You have the power to speak what you mean so robustly that it has an enhanced possibility to come into being. What you command with love and clarity will carry enduring potency.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Some Buddhist

monks create mandalas on floors from colored sand. They work meticulously for days or weeks to build intricate, symmetrical masterpieces.

Once their beautiful work is done, however, it typically doesn’t last long. The creators sweep it away either immediately or soon. The sand may be disposed of, perhaps poured into a river or stream. What’s the purpose of this strange practice? Most importantly, it displays a reverence for the impermanence of all things—an appreciation for beauty but not an attachment to it. I recommend you consider taking a cue from the sand mandalas in the coming weeks. Is there anything you love that you should let go of? A creation you can allow to transform into a new shape? An act of sacred relinquishing?

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Glassblowers shape molten sand with breath and fire, knowing the material can only be formed while it's hot and glowing. If they wait too long, the stuff stiffens, turns brittle, and resists change. But if they push too soon, it collapses into a misshapen blob. In this spirit, Libra, I urge you to recognize which parts of your life are now just the right temperature to be reshaped. Your timing must be impeccable. Where and when will you direct the flame of your willpower? Don’t wait until the opportunity cools. Art and magic will happen with just the right amount of heat applied at just the right moment.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21):"I have often

been racked by obsessive urges that plague me until I act them out." So says my Scorpio friend Fatima, a conceptual artist. "Fortunately," she continues, "I have finally retrained myself to focus on creative obsessions that fuel my art rather than on anxious, trivial obsessions that disorder my life. I'd be an offensive maniac if I couldn’t use my work as an outlet for my vehement fantasy life." I recommend Fatima’s strategy to Scorpios most of the time, but especially so in the coming days. Your imagination is even more cornucopian than usual.

To harness its beautiful but unruly power, you must channel it into noble goals.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): The

Igbo people of Nigeria have a term: ogwugwu na-adi n’ulo. It means “the medicine is in the house.” It’s the belief that healing doesn’t necessarily come from afar. It may already be here, hidden among the familiar, waiting to be acknowledged or discovered. Dear Sagittarius, your natural instinct is to look outward and afar for answers and help. But in the coming weeks, you should look close to home. What unnoticed or underestimated thing might be a cure or inspiration you’ve been overlooking? How can you find new uses for what you already have?

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): I invite

you to celebrate the holiday known as Be Your Own Best Helper. How should you observe this potentially pivotal transformation in your relationship with yourself? TAURUS (April 20-May 20): The ancestors

of my American friend Arisa lived in Ukraine, Indonesia, the Choctaw nation, and the Great Lakes region. Her new husband Anselme is of Japanese, Italian, and French descent. Their wedding was a celebration of multi-cultural influences.

Guests delivered toasts in five languages. Their marriage vows borrowed texts from three religious traditions. The music included a gamelan ensemble, a band that played Ukrainian folk music, and a DJ spinning Choctaw and Navajo prayers set to Indian ragas. I bring this to your attention in the hope you will seek comparable crossfertilization in the coming weeks. It's an excellent time to weave richly diverse textures into your life.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): I predict a future

when women will hold half of the leadership roles, when their income and time devoted to childcare will match men's, when women's orgasms are as common as men's, and when most guys know that misogyny is perilous to their health. Until the bloom of that wonderful era, I invite Geminis of all genders to invoke your tender ingenuity as you strengthen female opportunities and power.
