Remembering our own Burnout Our consciousness has been raised by the remembrance of the burnout of Greenwood in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on June 21, 1921. Greenwood, then known as Black Wall Street, was home to some 10,000 Afro-American citizens. The event was something our history books failed to reveal to many of us.

The same can be said of our own Tip of the Mitt’s Burnout, which took place 120 years ago on Monday, October 15, 1900. It, too, was race-related; however, in this instance, it was prejudice and racism against Native American people. On that day, some 20 families lost their log homes at Indian Village, on Indian Point, near Maple Bay Lake Cheboiganing (Burt Lake).

Besides the peaceful village’s homes, the site had a Catholic Church, rectory, and cemetery. It had farm fields, a maple bush, gardens, and an ongoing relationship with summer tourists who stopped by on small inland lake steamers to buy quill boxes, baskets, and other handmade items. The six parcels of land at Indian Village totaled some 375 acres that had been put into a land trust between 1848 and 1850, patent to the Governor of Michigan and his successors.

It was to be protected ancestral land in perpetuity. However, it was very soughtafter real estate and was illegally seized, and the village burned on October 15, 1900 — its Catholic Church made into a pig barn.

The Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band today has its headquarters three miles north of the burnout, on donated land. It currently has a Healing Garden project ongoing at that site, and donations can be sent to Burt Lake Band, PO Box 206, Brutus, 49716 (a 503-C organization). Thank you!

humanity. Lacking any compromise, they have to have their way or no way, just like their lying, spoiled, draft-dodging, unmanly leader. It seems strange; most dictators — Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini, and others — were at least manly and went to fight wars and actually worked. I find this sad, funny, and almost ridiculous that they can get behind someone so immoral and unchristian with only emotional hate toward the other side.

To a service member or politician, this: “I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true and faithful allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.” The second encounter, thus: “Do you solemnly swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?” The commonality here is the acknowledgment of God. The inherent fear of violating a sacred oath and then suffering the eternal wrath of a real and loving God. Congressman Jack Bergman stands in violation of these two oaths but doesn’t fear the consequences — because he has a new god. Bergman continues to support outlandish conspiracy theories. He votes against pandemic/infrastructure relief measures, supports voter suppression, and then lies about how he singlehandedly is returning federal funds to Michigan.

Bergman assumes 51.3 percent of American voters are fools who want a living wage, healthcare, and a planet not in peril.

Bergman wants to reopen our economy but has produced no jobs. Bergman claims to champion our veterans, yet the suicide rate for Michigan veterans ages 18-34 is far and away the highest, at a sobering 64 per 100,000.

Bergman has not told the truth or defended our Constitution since his election. This is expected as Bergman’s new god has also never told the truth or defended our Constitution. Bergman’s new god will smite him mightily if ever he steps out of line.

John H., Traverse City The Truth Is In his May 17 Northern Express opinion column, former Rep. Triston Cole advises Michiganders to see their commonalities more than their differences. He encourages working across the aisle and laments our current discord. But Cole’s message is darkened by an ugly and tragic shadow: his Republican Party, instigated

by Donald Trump, concocted The Stolen Election Lie, resulting in an attempt by thuggish Trump supporters to overthrow our democracy in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6, 2021.

Our democracy held, but it’s taken a bloody beating, very literally, and its confidence is dangerously shaken. Since

then, this disaster has metastasized into efforts by Republican-controlled state legislatures, including Michigan’s, to pass into law hundreds of voter-suppression measures, which are further attempts to derail and sabotage America’s democracy.

None of this is brought up by the representative, and while his admonitions about partisanship and professions of working across the aisle may sound sincere, Cole and others of his party must not be allowed to ignore this terrible state of affairs.

Until there is a reckoning of and ownership by Republicans, especially Trump supporters, for the deadly Jan. 6 putsch, and a cease and desist on the Republicans’ votersuppression efforts, the truth is (a phrase Cole so loves to use) that it is doubtful there will be a return of sustainable mutual trust and respect among Americans, something our democracy so desperately needs for a viable future.

Allen M., Interlochen The Right to Exist What a shock that Stephen Tuttle would quote “worn-out” data of the conditions of the Middle East/ Israel and Palestine.

Israel has occupied Palestine for over 70 years. It instituted apartheid laws forcing Palestinians to live as second-class citizens, marked with repression and militarized violence — mandated, of course, by persons that fled the same repressions in Germany.

What initiated the latest horror was the intensification of Israel’s ethnic-cleansing campaign against Palestinians in East Jerusalem, forcibly evicting people from their homes to hand them over to Israeli citizens. Then, the incendiary Ramadan siege by Israeli forces at one of the holiest sites in Islam, the Al-Asqa Mosque.

President Biden approved $735 million in arms funding for Israel during its latest attacks on Gaza and East Jerusalem. This exchange with Israel of millions in arms funding, of course, is a direct profit for our U.S.-supplied arms corporations.

Israel will say that the U.S. funds for Israeli weapons has been a boost to U.S. weapons manufacturers since its origin as a country in 1947 — a country mandated by the British, ignoring the Palestinian citizen, causing their massive exodus, as with the new Jewish occupiers leaving Germany, out of fear of their lives.

The U.S. motivation is not about assisting the good refugees versus the bad guys. The U.S. motivation and role in devastating conflicts, worldwide, is, has been, and will be profits for our U.S-based weapons manufacturers.

Israel wants to occupy all of Palestine and Gaza and destroy and further evict Palestinians. Israel is a nuclear power armed with the most sophisticated and lethal weaponry sponsored by the French and U.S. governments. President Joseph Biden has a career-long record of defending Israel’s worst crimes: Israel’s multi-decade war of annihilation of the original inhabitants of the territory, the Palestinian people.

I recommend David Swanson’s “Leaving World War II Behind” as essential to abolishing war and the provision of arms to promote massive destruction in other countries.

In case you missed it among the news that summer has arrived and the world is reopening, Governor Whitmer recently signed a series of bills into law to ease the sales and delivery of canned cocktails. The bill package creates several amendments to the Michigan Liquor Control Code, giving distillers more leeway in how they manufacture, sell, and deliver canned cocktails.

Senate Bill 141 allows small distillers to deliver mixed drinks directly to consumers.

Senate Bill 142 opens the door for distillers to deliver packaged mixed drinks to retailers.

Senate Bill 144 amends the definition of a “mixed spirit drink,” allowing for higher alcohol by volume and for mixed cocktails to be manufactured and sold in cans of up to 24 ounces. Senate Bill 143 eases restrictions on the sale of distillers’ logo merchandise.

“These bills will make canned mixed spirits more affordable and accessible, creating jobs and helping Michigan small businesses,” Whitmer says.

The Michigan Craft Distillers Association President Jon O’Connor touted the new law as the “beginning of continued and expanded support for future efforts related to enhancing opportunities for Michigan small distillers.”

Just as we are approaching what could be a semblance of a "normal" summer, it sure feels like the last thing any of us want to watch is pandemic-related programming.

But that's only because you have yet to see Bo Burnham's latest comedy special, Inside. And to refer to it as a mere comedy special belies the brilliance of its achievement. It’s a mesmerizing masterpiece that is perhaps the greatest work of art to come out of our time in quarantine. Nothing else needs to be said on the subject. It's that good. An hour and a half of comedic commentary and song that that is a marvel of tonal shifts, it moves from songs about the seemingly easy target that is a white woman's Instagram, to the staggering nature of the internet-content age with astonishing inventiveness. From the confines of a small room, Burnham has created something singularly cinematic and claustrophobic, something that will overwhelm you with its raw empathy and sincerity.

You might expect a former schoolhouse turned restaurant and curling facility would be more sedate in its dining options. Or at least, with primarily Scottish or Canadian fare — the former said to be the early creator of the game; the latter its adoptive obsessor. In any case, you’d be wrong. With a strikingly robust and creative menu, this sweet little spot in Maple City brings a little bit of everything good to your table. Serving up excellent pizza, burgers, salads, beer, and booze — as any eatery that mixes sport with sustenance should — Broomstack’s kitchen also surprises with dishes like a divine beet salad with candied walnuts, a to-die-for starter of brussels sprouts crisped and seasoned to such perfection you’ll want to make a meal of it, a peanut-butter bacon burger even the unadventurous should try, and — the winner of the night, in our eyes — the Cubano ($14), featuring garlic pork, a hefty hunk of ham, melty swiss, house pickles and Dijon served on a pressed and grilled brioche bun. Smartly served with a subtly sweet stack of thick plantain chips, this dish treated every one of our taste receptors right. Though Broomstack’s curling season is sadly wrapping up for summer — a few hours of sliding and sweeping stones along an ice sheet was a delicious escape on a recent steamy summer night — its spacious restaurant remains cool, and its outdoor eating options, some under a shady tree, are aplenty. We Like Big Boats, and We Cannot Lie

Grill’s Grateful Dead We assumed there would be no way to improve upon our early summer ritual of basking in the sun at Suttons Bay beach, then flip-flopping our sandy feet across M-22 to sip a cocktail at the V.I. Grill’s summer patio bar. Then we tried the Grateful Dead. And we were never more thankful to be alive on a summer day in Northern Michigan.

What the V.I. humbly calls “A psychedelic twist on a Long Island Ice Tea” — vodka, gin, rum, triple sec, and lemon and lime topped with Chambord and Sprite — did not, in fact, have us hallucinating. Yet we couldn’t help but wonder if it was our imagination that the Grateful Dead, dare we say, tasted even better than a Long Island, the traditional backbone of our very best beach days in Suttons Bay summer history? Rather than sweet, this tall and artful treat lent itself to a more confident level of pucker. Brightly sour and refreshingly light (credit to the genius combo of Chambord with Sprite, two things we’d never think to put together), the Grateful Dead perked us up instead of laid us out and provided exactly the kind of gas we needed to keep us on our sandy feet for our post-cocktail dessert: a slow and steady SUP ride back at the bay.

From the French word filibustier, it was first used as a negative descriptor of pirates marauding French colonies in the Caribbean in the early 17th Century. It would be more than another century before it appeared in American politics and then only by omission.

As we know it today, the filibuster is an obstructionist device used by one party or the other in the U.S. Senate to prevent legislation from being passed by endlessly debating it.

But during a filibuster, that “debate” need not necessarily stay on the subject. Once recognized and given the floor, a senator can talk about anything at all during a filibuster; there are no subject rules.

presidential nominations can pass with a filibuster-free majority. Any legislation can be filibustered for any reason at all.

Wiser heads prevailed in the House, and in 1841 it limited members to no more than one hour of debate on any issue, eliminating the filibuster without actually saying so.

(Only 14 states currently allow some form of the filibuster.)

Democrats now talk about ending the filibuster, something they could do with a simple majority vote. Their reasoning is pretty simple; if the GOP threatens to filibuster every significant piece of legislation put forward by the Democrats, and it takes 60 votes in an evenly divided Senate, there is no chance they will ever pass anything.

The filibuster is an artificial construct born accidentally that has mainly served as a vehicle to allow a minority of senators to control, or at least impede, the majority.

Finally, in 1917, the Senate got around to creating a mechanism to end filibusters.

Called cloture, it originally required a twothirds vote of the senators present but has since morphed into three-fifths of the entire Senate, or 60 votes.

The filibuster has the reputation, now promulgated by some progressives, of being created as a racist tool to undermine civil rights. That seems unlikely since Burr's parliamentary housekeeping suggestion was in 1806. It is true enough, though, the filibuster has been used by southern senators attempting to sink civil rights legislation.

In 1957, Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, then a Democrat but soon to become a Republican, yammered away for 24 hours and 18 minutes in an effort to defeat that year's Civil Rights Bill, a record for an individual that still stands. His efforts failed to change a single vote, and the legislation passed.

In 1964, a group of southern Democrats went much further, conducting a filibuster that lasted 60 days in an effort to kill the Civil Rights Act of 1964. That one didn't work, either; the legislation passed. (That filibuster lasted that long because several people joined together, yielding the floor to each other until a cloture vote finally shut them up, and down.)

There will be no elimination of the filibuster because Democrats cannot generate 50 votes from their own party, thanks to Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona and Joe Manchin of West Virginia. Nor will there be an open, bipartisan Congressional investigation into the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol, or legislation guaranteeing the rights of all of us to vote; Manchin, Donald Trump's favorite Democrat, opposes both.

If they want a rule change, it should be this: Whoever wants to filibuster has to actually do it. As it stands now, no actual filibuster is required, just a note threatening one.

So, what used to take some organization, coordination, and real effort now just requires a short email. It takes but seconds to write and send such a note and seconds to grind the Senate to a halt thereafter.

Once announced, it stops even debate on issues of real substance, like what led, directly and indirectly, to the events of Jan. 6 — or how we can protect the rights of voters from overreaching voter suppression legislation in several states.

The current rhetoric, however, could change dramatically. Should Democrats lose control of the Senate in 2022 — a very real possibility — those now yammering for an end to the filibuster will instead use it as the same weapon Republicans now wield. And it will be Republicans talking of eliminating it.

Remember, weed is still illegal at the federal level, and every beach, trail, and facility in the Lakeshore is on federal land.

Cannabis is best used on private property and out of public view (and smell) — so if you are headed to a state- or municipality-owned shoreline, seek out one of the hundreds of quiet stretches locals know and leave the joints at home. Take a cartridge or edibles with you instead; neither have the telltale marijuana skunk smell that sell you out to curious kids or judging adults.

The rules for boating with cannabis are similar to boating with alcohol. You cannot use cannabis and operate a boat, but we highly recommend using cannabis and riding on a boat. Nothing is more peaceful than a sunset smoke while getting sailed around the lakes and bays. Pro tip: Watching Fourth of July fireworks can even look better after a few hits from select strains.

BBQs are another great summer venue for the weed enthusiast. A private backyard, a crew of close friends, and platters of homemade food as far as the eye can see … what could end a northern Michigan summer day better?

Behind every great fortune lies a great crime. — Honore de Balzac Big Tech is not really who we think they are. We think they are simply hotbeds of innovation that represent the pinnacle of human ingenuity and creativity. They are also symbols of technology’s malign influence.

And like the late John D. Rockefeller, they are latter-day robber barons.

Rockefeller (1839-1937), founder of Standard Oil Company, became one of the world’s wealthiest men by eliminating his competitors and acquiring and combining competing companies into one corporation. He also lowered his prices, undercutting his competitors and forcing them out of business. He pressured customers not to do business with his competitors and persuaded railroads to give him lower rates than his competitors.

A deeply religious man who attended church each Sunday, he abstained from alcohol and tobacco his whole life. His only known vice was destroying his neighbors’ businesses and ruining their livelihood.

If you believed that Standard Oil had nothing in common with Big Tech, you would be wrong, and you would miss the threat these giants pose to our democracy and way of life.

Big Tech — Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Facebook — permeates every facet of our lives. All of us, at some time in our lives, use their services at least once.

Some of us use multiple, if not all, of their services. These companies have expanded at a breathtaking speed, creating an explosion of services, most of which we have less than a full understanding.

Facebook’s Zuckerberg followed Rockefeller’s playbook when he acquired Instagram and Whatsapp. This acquisition removed Facebook’s two main competitors, effectively eliminating its competition.

Google has created a dizzying number of services such as Gmail, Google Adwords, Adsense, Google Analytics, and so on.

Amazon has become the monster that devours everything in its path. It has become the “marketplace of everything,” from books to beauty supplies. If you need it — or think that you do — Amazon has it. Amazon, in a move Rockefeller would envy, undercuts its competition by offering everything it sells at prices your local shops cannot match. Remember Borders Books? I do. Big Tech decimated that venerable Ann Arbor, Michigan, company!

On May 15, 1911, the U.S. Supreme Court declared Standard Oil’s monopoly illegal and ordered it to divest itself of its subsidiaries and forbade it to re-establish its monopoly.

Can't Possibly Be True What is art? For Italian artist Salvatore Garau, it's ... nothing. The 67-year-old sculptor recently sold his "immaterial" sculpture, "I am," for $18,300, Newsweek reported on June 1. The buyer got a certificate of ownership. Garau says his work is a "vacuum." "The vacuum is nothing more than a space full of energy, and even if we empty it and there is nothing left, according to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, that 'nothing' has a weight," Garau explained. The artist demands that the work be displayed in a private home free of any obstruction, in a 5-by-5foot area, but he has no requirements for lighting or climate control.

People With Issues William Amos, 46, a member of the Canadian House of Commons, can't seem to get a handle on the technology he uses for virtual meetings. In April, Amos appeared completely naked on camera during a House of Commons proceeding, explaining later that he was changing in his office after going for a run and was sure that he had disabled his camera. On May 26, Amos had to apologize again -- this time for urinating "without realizing I was on camera." "I am deeply embarrassed by my actions and the distress they may have caused anybody who witnessed them," he wrote on Twitter, according to the National Post. His statement also said he would "seek assistance," although it was unclear what type of assistance that would be.

Compelling Explanations In Palm Beach County (Florida) Circuit Court, Judge Jeffrey Dana Gillen on May 28 rejected a "stand your ground" defense in the animal cruelty case of PJ Nilaja Patterson, 43, who killed an iguana in September, and ordered him to stand trial, The Washington Post reported.

Patterson's lawyer argued that the iguana had "leaned forward with its mouth wide open and showing its sharp teeth," and that Patterson was bitten on his arm, needing 22 stitches. He believed the iguana could inject poison into him, his lawyers wrote, so he kicked the iguana, and "an altercation between Patterson and the wild beast took place." However, prosecutors say that Patterson's actions, caught on surveillance video, showed that he "savagely beat, tormented, tortured and killed" the 3-foot-long lizard in an attack that lasted for 30 minutes, during which the animal suffered a lacerated liver, broken pelvis and internal bleeding.

Patterson's next court date is July 30.

In mid-May, an Indian engineer with the Sardar Sarovar Punarvasvat Agency (SSPA) in Gujarat was asked to explain why he hadn't been coming in to work, the Deccan Chronicle reported. Rameshchandra Fefar, who is in his late 50s, replied that as the 10th incarnation of Lord Vishnu, he is very busy doing "penance" and "I can't do such penance sitting in office. I realized that I am Kalki Avatar when I was in my office in March 2010. Since then, I am having divine powers," Fefar said. He claims that his ongoing penance is the reason that India has had good rainfall for 19 years.

The Passing Parade As he gave a campaign speech on June 1, Albuquerque mayoral candidate Manuel Gonzalez found himself distracted by a drone with a sex toy attached to it buzzing near the stage, the Associated Press reported. The owner of the venue grabbed the drone, and its owner, 20-year-old Kaelan Ashby Dreyer, tried to take it back.

Dreyer then swung his fist at Gonzalez and called him a "tyrant," punching Gonzalez's hands before being removed by deputies.

Gonzalez's campaign said the candidate, currently the Bernalillo County sheriff, was unharmed and "will not be intimidated."

Inappropriate Behavior Jerry Detrick, 70, was cited by Greenville, Ohio, police on May 30 for "littering," The Smoking Gun reported.

What he actually was doing was defecating and urinating on his neighbor's lawn when the homeowner discovered him around 3:15 a.m. Matthew Guyette called 911 after spotting Detrick relieving himself next to a hedge. Detrick, a self-described "Trump man" who lives a couple of blocks away, told police that he targeted Guyette's home because he and his partner "are Democrats and support Joe Biden." Reportedly, Detrick had been leaving his mark on the lawn for about 10 years, along with restaurant napkins he used to wipe. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 8.

Low-Tech Solution During the COVID-19 pandemic, grounded planes were often parked in deserts -- ideal conditions for storing them. But aircraft maintenance crews also discovered unwanted guests: snakes.

So Australian airline Qantas added one more item to its engineering kit: a "wheel whacker," also known as a broom handle.

Before crews begin their landing gear inspections, they circle the plane, stomping their feet and whacking the wheels to scare off sleepy snakes, said engineering manager Tim Heywood. The "feisty rattlers love to curl up around the warm rubber tires and in the aircraft wheels and brakes," he said, according to CNN. "We've encountered a few rattlesnakes and also some scorpions, but the wheel whacker does its job and they scuttle off."

Awesome!

On May 20, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed into law a bill to override a 1993 ban on yoga practice in public schools, The New York Times reported. While conservative groups had posited that yoga and Hinduism and Buddhism are inseparable, the bill gained approval from the state House and Senate before arriving on Ivey's desk. But fear not! Students will still be prohibited from "chanting," and instructors will not be allowed to use Sanskrit names for yoga poses or to say "Namaste." The Rev. Clete Hux isn't having it, though: "Schools should not be in the position of endorsing possible altered states of consciousness," he said.

State Rep. Jeremy Gray, a certified yoga instructor, begs to differ: "Anyone who has taken yoga, we know that namaste is not something religious."

TORCH LAKE

TAKEOVER Local residents and labs search for the source of increasing algae blooms in one of the North’s most beautiful lakes

You don’t need to live on the shores of Torch Lake to know how breathtakingly gorgeous it is. A massive inland lake (the biggest in Michigan, by water volume), Torch Lake is known for its party-raising sandbars, its cavernous depths (nearly 300 feet to the bottom at its deepest point), and its pure, clear waters. Local legend has it that National Geographic once named Torch the “third most beautiful lake in the world” (though Northern Express couldn’t verify this claim). Certainly, MLive once named Torch Lake “Michigan’s own slice of the Caribbean” — a comparison others have made over the years, thanks to the lake’s picturesque shades of deep blue and seafoam green.

One thing that doesn’t mesh with Torch Lake’s reputation for resplendent beauty? Big blooms of brown algae, which have become increasingly common in the lake’s near-shore areas over the past decade.

According to Tom Joseph, a 26-year resident of the Torch Lake community, the algae situation hasn’t crossed over into crisis mode just yet, but that doesn’t mean it’s not concerning. While some property owners along the lake have noticed thick mats of algae sticking to the lake bottoms near their docks and beaches, Joseph says that — from his perspective, at least — the algae is not yet disrupting tourism, affecting property values, hurting lake-dependent businesses, or otherwise hindering overall enjoyment of the lake. In fact, Joseph says that tourists or other more casual users of the lake might not even be aware yet that something is amiss.

“Like so many things in life, it depends on your perspective,” Joseph says of the algae issue. “We’ve lived here for 26 years, so to us, it's a dramatic change [to see algae in this lake]. It used to be that the water was so crystal clear that, even at the end of the season when we’d take our dock out, there'd be very little evidence of anything on the legs of the dock, or the shore station that the boat sits on. Each year, you see a little bit more. So we are very sensitive to it, and it is a very big deal. But when we have guests come up here, especially from downstate or out of state, they marvel at the purity of the water. They say, ‘What are you talking about?! I've never seen anything so crystal clear.’”

Despite the relative subtlety of algae growth in Torch Lake, Joseph says there are enough residents like him — watching the waters day in and day out, constantly monitoring for changes — to sound the alarm. For at least the past five years, the algae blooms in Torch Lake have been under the microscope.

Organizations like the Torch Lake Protection Association (TLPA, for which Joseph serves as a board member) and the Three Lakes Association (which focuses on water quality preservation efforts for Torch Lake, Lake Bellaire, and Clam Lake) have been funding water quality studies and other research aimed at determining what is causing the algae blooms — and how those scientific processes might be reversed.

In 2019, TLPA launched its latest effort at getting to the bottom of the algae mystery: a far-reaching study aimed at filling in the gaps that previous research had left unexplored. The organization contracted with Environment Consulting & Technology, Inc., a Traverse City-based company, to collect

water samples, with subcontracts going Ann Arbor’s PhycoTech, Inc. for laboratory analysis of the algae samples; and Traverse City’s Great Lakes Environmental Center, for water chemistry analysis. Contractors collected water samples from May through October last year, with lab work following.

The report documenting the study’s findings came back this spring.

In particular, Joseph says the TLPA study was intended to zero in on algae growth in “the near-shore shallows” and in “the inlet tributaries that flow into the lake.” The key takeaways from the report — which will be published in its full 164-page glory on the TLPA site later this summer — are threefold: First, and perhaps most crucially, Joseph says “there is no ‘smoking gun’ single factor” causing algae blooms in Torch Lake, which makes solving the issue that much more difficult.

Second, while Torch residents have mostly been referring to the blooms as “golden-brown algae” (GBA, a specific class or type of freshwater algae) thanks to its general golden-brown hue, the actual biological makeup of the lake’s blooms is more complicated. Joseph says the algae is “brownish in color because it is a mixture of fungus, diatoms, blue-green algae/ cyanobacteria, and sediments,” all of which are “in the brownish to yellowish range.”

Third, the study determined that concentrations of phosphorous, a wellknown contributor to algae growth, were ping-ponging “widely over time” in several of the tributaries that flow into Torch Lake — including Wilkinson Creek, A-Ga-Ming Creek, and Eastport Creek.

What do these findings mean, and where do they put Torch Lake heading into what promises to be another busy season of tourism, boating, and water-bound recreation?

The good news is that there is no evidence to suggest that the algae is toxic in any way. The contents of what Joseph is now calling Torch’s “diatom-dominated bottom crust” are naturally occurring and have been observed in many other lakes, both locally and in other northern parts of the United States. Lakes, Joseph notes, follow a natural “aging process” just like anything else, and growing accumulations of algae on Torch Lake could be part of that process.

There is evidence, however, that human

activity can accelerate a lake’s natural aging process — and that smart lake preservation could be possible by adopting a few simple changes to day-to-day behavior and activity.

“There are many case studies that have been conducted of freshwater lake systems that have shown that there's a natural process of lakes,” Joseph said. “Man and the climate have a dramatic impact on what that lifecycle looks like. So, if development around the lake is not done in a responsible manner, the lake is going to age very quickly, and the algae is going to continue to build up. I once found a study of Lake Bellaire that was done in the ’50s or ’60s, right when they first started developing around that lake.

Lake Bellaire, at one time, was very much like Torch Lake: very clear, sandy bottom, you could see to depths 25 to 30 feet. But they did not follow the warning signs. They developed it too quickly, did too much on the lake. And it changed. It’s still a beautiful lake, but it's in the process of accelerated aging, and that's what we want to avoid.”

The TLPA sees several strategies that could help prevent accelerated aging from becoming the narrative of Torch Lake. The key, Joseph says, is being mindful of “nutrient loading,” or the process by which large quantities of foreign nutrients find their way into a lake system in a concentrated period of time. The TLPA has identified three key contributors to the problem of nutrient loading in and around Torch Lake: the use

of lawn fertilizers, old or poorly maintained septic systems, and stormwater runoff.

To start, the TLPA is working on a variety of efforts to educate local residents on how they can help preserve the health of the lake. Last year, the organization started distributing yard signs that read “Keep Torch Blue; Don’t Fertilize.” TLPA is working with the Three Lakes Association on a similar effort this year. The organization is also encouraging local property owners to invest in regular inspections and cleanings for their septic systems and is even in talks with local health departments to explore the possibility of establishing some sort of mandatory septic system inspection ordinance. Finally, TLPA is hoping to spread the word that future development along the lakeshore needs to “provide proper buffer zones … to minimize rainfall runoff from carrying nutrients into the lake.”

At the moment, Joseph says there is solid buy-in among the Torch Lake community on efforts to curb the lake’s premature aging.

Last year, TLPA made 250 “Don’t Fertilize” yard signs and gave them all out within 30 days. Demand has stayed high enough to necessitate the printing of another batch.

More generally, chatter around preservation efforts has been positive, too.

“I always tell people that Torch Lake is something that gets in your soul,” Joseph says. “You can't walk away from it. It’s such a wonderful area that nature has blessed

us with, and we owe it back to the lake to take care of it. I would say that the majority of the people — particularly the full-time lakeshore owners and residents — feel the same, and are very supportive.”

Longer term, preserving the lake could be an expensive proposition — and more of a test of loyalty to the lake for local residents. For instance, Joseph notes that some communities in Michigan previously had mandatory point-of-sale inspections for septic systems, but that those policies have mostly gone away because septic repairs or replacements are expensive and were making it difficult for property owners to sell their homes.

“Michigan is blessed with the best freshwater sources of lakes and streams of any place in the world,” Joseph said. “And yet, we are the worst state for having a consistent health code for septic systems.

Lansing needs to protect our waters — whether it's rivers, streams, lakes, or wells — by having some consistent legislation requiring the health departments to regulate not only the installation of septic tanks, but the maintenance of them. And long term, if Torch Lake is going to have a long lifecycle, we're going to have to depart from private septic systems entirely and get to sewer systems. People are overwhelmed with the cost and the construction [of such a project], but that's just a fact of life, and that's what's best for the lakes.”

Boat Dreams … Sunk?

Sales continue surge as demand outstrips supply.

By Ross Boissoneau If you’re looking to get out on the water this summer, good luck. A banner on the top of Sailsport Marine’s website says it all: “Thinking about a new boat, kayak, or board this year? Act fast! Supply is tight.”

With all the pandemic-related restrictions last summer, boating was one of the few things people could do. That led to a nearly unprecedented demand, and things haven’t slowed down this year. “Traffic is huge,” says Cedes Powers at Grand Bay Marine, both for boats and accessories. “Has it been a challenge? I think so.”

“Everything is hot — $30,000 pontoons and 50-foot yachts,” says Joel Shoemaker, general manager at Walstrom Marine.

Christine McCool, co-owner of Dewitt Marine on the Clam River between Clam Lake and Torch Lake, said she’s never seen such demand and supply issues in her 12 years in the business. “My father has been in the industry since the late ’70s and he hasn’t seen anything like it either,” she says.

Indeed, statistics from the National Marine Manufacturers Association show that marine products and services across the country leaped to a 13-year high last year, totaling $47 billion. That’s an increase of 9 percent from 2019.

“Inventory levels of new boats are the leanest they’ve ever been, and boats are being sold as soon as they hit the marketplace as manufacturers work to fulfill the backlog of orders,” says Vicky Yu, senior director of business intelligence for NMMA. That’s the story locally as well. “There isn’t that much available,” agreed Scott Wilson of Sailsport Marine. “We’ve been selling boats I don’t have that I hope to get in.”

It’s not like this was unexpected. Last year, boat sales surged to nearly unprecedented levels because so many other halted summertime activities left people desperate for any way to partake of the season. Boating also made it easy to be safely socially distant from others. “Last summer, one of the only (safe) activities was boating. With the

pandemic last year, boating outside was a good family activity for everyone to enjoy,” says Powers, who works in marketing at Grand Bay Marine.

According to the National Marine Manufacturers Association, the boating industry is a $170-plus billion industry in the U.S. In Michigan alone, its economic impact is $7.4 billion, with 806,296 boats registered in the state. And if the boat shops could get additional stock, there would be even more than that registered.

It’s not only the fact that more people want to get out and have fun that’s led to the shortage of boats. The work slowdown and difficulties in shipping and receiving goods (further residue of the pandemic) interrupted the supply chain, continuing to hobble the industry. So much so that even when dealers ordered more boats than in years past in the belief they could and would sell them, they got fewer. “Boat builders continue facing supply sid- constraints,” says Yu. Heather Stetson Leman of Long Lake Marina ticked off the challenges. “The supply chain. Not enough dock workers.

Transportation. They [manufacturers] are getting things built, but we won’t see them until July,” she says.

Long Lake Marina specializes in Yamaha Wave Runners, but good luck getting one.

“We’ve sold every one. The factory ships them here, and they’re sold before [they arrive]. Last year they let us have 60, but we were shorted by five,” says Stetson. “This last fall, I wanted to order 75 to 80. They [the manufacturer] said, ‘No, you’ll get 55.’ Then it was only 46. Of the last 17 [on order], ‘You’re only getting 14.’”

What else is selling? Wilson says he’s been selling lots of small sailboats. Demand for kayaks is huge too. “Demand is outrageous, just because of social distancing.”

So are larger dealers able to get in things smaller ones cannot? Sometimes. “With six locations, we have some connections, but it’s frustrating,” says Shoemaker. He said the Traverse City branch of Walstrom specializes in Crest pontoons and Pursuit,

but current inventory is selling fast, so Grand Bay Marine anticipates getting more boats from manufacturers like Starcraft and Regal by midsummer. “Demand is up across all manufacturers — Regal bow riders, cruisers and yachts, Robalo, Starcraft pontoons, Sweetwater pontoons, Bayliner.”

What about used boats? Most take them in on consignment or purchase them from those buying a new boat to resell. But the voracious demand means there’s not a lot of used boats either. Even online sites like Craigslist or the various Facebook sale sites are seeing listings change daily, so you need to move quickly.

The situation is similar to the current state of the real estate industry. Selling a home has never been easier, but buying a different one to live in is a huge challenge. So while the current demand has made it easier to sell your boat, those in the industry warn against moving too fast: If you are looking to step up to a new boat, make sure you don’t put yourself at a disadvantage by selling your old one before you get the new one. “If you have a boat, don’t sell it,” advises Leman.

She says shipments from manufacturers have been so spotty, they don’t know when or what they will receive. “It could be three weeks, it could be 12 weeks.”

The tight supply and increased demand extends to boat-related accessories. “Parts have been hard to get too,” says Powers.

Leman said shops like hers are struggling to find enough docks and hoists for customers, both old and new. “Last year, water levels were high, and people needed

high docks. Now they’re lower, and they need lower docks,” she says.

That lack of available parts makes boat repairs a challenge at the consumer level, but manufacturers face a similar problem. If just one part is unavailable, “You can’t make a certain boat. The supply chain was slowed all over the world,” says Wilson. “We keep hoping the supply changes. Demand is not slowing down.”

“People want to enjoy the summer,” says Powers. “Everyone just wants to get out on the water this year if they can.” And if they can’t, they’re looking ahead. “They’re also ordering now for next year,” she adds, meaning that unless the supply chain recovers quickly, the current situation could be similar next year.

“What it comes down to is what’s available. What we have — there’s some in stock, and more coming in.”

But how many and when is a question no one can answer. “We’re waiting for the manufacturers to get us the products we ordered last summer,” says McCool.

If you can’t get a boat, does that mean you won’t be able to get out on the water? Not necessarily. Dewitt Marine launched a boat club last year, and McCool says it has taken off. For a membership fee and monthly dues, members have access to a private fleet owned and maintained by Dewitt. That means not only do members not have to wait to buy a boat, they don’t have to pay for maintenance, winter storage, or a slip fee. The region’s myriad waterways offer a variety of adventures for all levels of kayakers, and an opportunity to buy one of these boats is as ubiquitous as it is to rent. (A visit to your local Meijer or sporting goods store is often all it takes to own your own for general use on inland lakes, while specialized retailers — The Outfitter of Harbor Springs, Northbound Outfitters in Grayling, and Backcountry Outfitters in Traverse City to name just a few — are the go-to for those eager to up their

Manistee River

CCC Bridge to Three Mile Bend: 2.5 hours There are numerous kayak launches along this 191-mile long river that stretches from the south of Otsego County to the shores of Lake Michigan in Manistee County. The river is perfect for the beginner. The average depth varies from one foot to four feet, depending on the section of river. Although winding, the Manistee tends to be wider and slower moving.

For most paddlers, a good starting point is at CCC Bridge State Forest Campground (7184 Sunset Trail SE, in Fife Lake). There is a kayak ramp, making launching easy, and all along the route several spots to pull over and swim. In fact, a shallow bend about five minutes into the paddle is a perfect spot to take a dip. For a longer paddle, head to the Sharon Road access, which makes the trip about four to five hours. Expect to see plenty of wildlife and an occasional angler. Leave the radio off and let nature provide the music.

Jordan River

Graves Crossing to Webster Bridge: 3.5 hours This Jordan River, flowing through Charlevoix and Antrim counties; not the legendary one in the Middle East — is for the more experienced kayaker, especially its upper portion.

Unapologetically swift and winding, the river is especially challenging in spring, when fallen trees and high water converge to complicate its narrow passages. By summer, it’s less treacherous but still somewhat challenging and worth the ride if you’ve got the skills for some thrills. The banks of the river are lined with old cedars, which provide a welcome respite from the sweltering summer sun. There are numerous places to pull off to have lunch and take a swim. About an hour into the trip from Graves Crossing (M-66 & Graves Crossing, Mancelona), kayakers will reach Old State Road Bridge, which is a better access spot for those looking for a less active tour. The culverts and small whitewater rapids, previously a bit of a wild ride that overturned many a kayak, have been re-engineered and somewhat tamed, making the area a nice spot to stop for a snack or to launch into calmer waters. From here, the river starts to widen and mellow, allowing to shift their focus from steering to tanning.

For a relaxing ride with more scenery than waves (and minimally sore shoulders), steer your hull to one of the region’s rivers. Typically, an 8-to-10-foot boat with a wider hull is ideal for just about any river in lower Michigan, though many folks make do with shorter vessels. Whichever you have handy, make sure to carry a lifejacket wherever you paddle. Although it’s not required by law to wear one while kayaking, there has to be one aboard the vessel or you’ll face a fine. (For safety’s sake, we recommend wearing it just in case.)

Once you have a kayak and your PFD, you’re ready to set out on a river adventure. Here are four to pick from:

Sturgeon River

Wolverine City Park to Rondo Road: 3 hours Warning: This is not a beginner’s kayak. The Sturgeon River is the fastest-flowing river in the Lower Peninsula, with an average descent of 14 feet per mile. It is also a technical paddle, with some white water portions and strong currents that put kayakers in a tailspin when navigating around sharp corners. Don’t just take it from us. According to according to RiverFacts.com, the Sturgeon River has an 80 percent tip-over rate in a flat-bottom kayak. With these kinds of statistics, wearing a PFD and stashing your belongings in a dry bag is a very, very good idea. (Personal note: I lost an iPhone on this river after hitting an overhanging branch that capsized my boat.) A good cup holder is also a necessity, because the river demands full attention for navigating around protruding rocks, logs, and … herds of folks in slower moving but far less steerable float tubes. A good spot to stop for a breather — and lunch and a cool one — is the Thirsty Sturgeon Restaurant on the bank of the river.

Don’t be deterred from taking on this river, just come prepared and experienced. The scenery will not disappoint.

Boardman River

Scheck’s Campground to Brown Bridge Landing: 2 hours The river starts near Kalkaska and 28 miles later empties into Grand Traverse Bay. Start at Scheck’s Place State Forest Campground (6069 Brown Bridge Rd.), where there is a flat grassy area near the parking lot that makes for an easy launch into the shallow but slightly swift-moving river. This kayak trip is suitable for the novice. The first half wends through a leafy forest with few houses. The second half of the kayak trip is a winding paddle between high sandy banks that block out the horizon but give a sense of seclusion except when an occasional runner or walker is spotted along the ridges. During the right time of year, wildflowers dot the high gravelly banks. The final stretch used to be Brown Bridge Pond, before the Brown Bridge Dam was removed, draining the pond, in 2012, and the area was re-engineered to allow it to return to its natural state. Before reaching the old pond area there is a footbridge that spans across the river, which is part of the Brown Bridge Quiet Area. The trip goes quick, so make sure to linger a bit on the sandy shores and enjoy the clear, cool flowing water.

DINGHY’S RESTAURANT & BAR Beach-town BBQ and from-scratch cooking

By Al Parker Kelly Sandman chuckles at a customer’s joke, runs a cloth across a section of the 33-foot-bar, then greets a famished family seeking BBQ at one of northern Michigan's most venerable eateries, Dinghy's Restaurant & Bar. Sitting on Frankfort's main drag, right across from City Hall, Dinghy's is a mecca for those who seek saucy BBQ of all sorts.

“This building is over 100 years old,” General Manager Sandman says with pride.

“Back in the '20s it was the Cocktail Grille, then from '54 to '94 it was Baker's Bar. Sally Donaldson bought in '94 and re-named it Dinghy's. Current owner Steve Christian bought it in 1999.”

Christian, a retired banker, showed his devotion for all things BBQ by building a dedicated smoke room for the eatery's two commercial “Smoke Chef ” Miller smokers.

That's where several members of the Dinghy's team smoke ribs, chicken, pork, and chicken wings.

Only hardwoods fuel the smokers — usually cherry, apple, or maple.

With its long, narrow profile, the interior of Dinghy's welcomes guests with a relaxing nautical vibe. Stained glass windows, designed by Donaldson decades ago, are a nice touch. Wooden booths (including four that are originals) line the left wall while the bar commands the right side of the restaurant. It's a comfortable interior, the kind of place whose dark woods, diffused light, and mellow vibe make it the perfect respite after hours spent in the sun and

waves at Frankfort’s Lake Michigan shore.

Just a short flip-flop walk up the street, Dinghy’s is a common destination for hungry beachgoers. Its menu offers enough choices to satisfy almost any diner but caters to those who love BBQ. “Our pulled pork sandwiches are our most popular BBQ item,” says Sandman.

“During our busy months of July and August, we'll sell about 1,000 a month.”

The pulled pork is piled high on a toasted roll and served with fries ($12.99) Not too far behind in popularity are Dinghy’s award-winning St. Louis cut pork ribs ($19.99 for a half-rack, $26.99 for a full rack). The thick meaty slabs are from the Chicago Meat Authority and shipped to Dinghy's on a regular basis.

Prep Cook Carla Worden makes up the rubs for all the meats that hit the smoker. The rib rub is a special blend of salt, sugar, Spanish paprika, cayenne, and cinnamon. Once rubbed, the ribs are in the smoker for 2 hours and 15 minutes at 280 degrees. Then they're finished on the char-grill. They serve them wet, with a specially blended sauce, or dry.

“We'll probably do a couple of dozen racks today,” says Worden, who's been at Dinghy's for 13 years.

Also coming out of the smoker is the tritip sirloin which is shaved and grilled for the French Dip ($12.99). It comes topped with sauteed mushrooms and onions, with melted provolone cheese and a side of au jus.

“The tri-tip is done low and slow,” explains Worden. “It's in the smoker for 4 hours and 15 minutes at 170 degrees.”

Also popular with BBQ lovers is

Dinghy's smoked Chicken Wings — served plain, dry-rubbed, or sauced with honey chipotle, in-house BBQ sauce, or spicy hot. A half-pound order is $7.99 and a full pound is $13.99.

If you need more chicken, a smoked half-bird slathered with sauce and served with slaw and fries is $17.99 and enough for multiple meals.

Dinghy's sauce deserves special attention of its own. Made in-house, it's a complex blend that includes the BBQ basics of tomato paste, sugars, vinegar, and molasses but adds some twists like pineapple juice, garlic, tamarind, and mustard flour. The result is a savory taste treat that enhances every meat it drenches.

Want a big sample of their BBQ? Try the Platter, a half rack of ribs, half of a chicken, and a healthy portion of pulled pork ($31.99) It's all sauced or dry-rubbed and comes with coleslaw and fries.

Need even more BBQ choices? How about a Quesadilla stuffed with pulled pork and cheddar jack cheese ($12.99) or some BBQ Nachos ($11.99) featuring tortilla chips topped with pulled pork, sliced jalapeno, green onions, and Siracha sour cream.

Even if you're not in the mood for BBQ, Dinghy's keeps to its nautical theme with its famous Friday Fish Fry. Perch or Cod are served with fries. A 5-piece cod meal is $15.99 while a 5-piece perch meal is $2 more. Want to try both? That's only $16.99.

A popular local favorite is the Twice Baked Potato Soup (cup $3.99, bowl $4.99) even during the hottest days of summer.

If you stop in for lunch, you'll find a Build-Your-Own Burger that starts with a half-pound of Angus beef, plus other handhelds like a chicken sandwich, Michigan Cherry Wrap, Sandwich of Your Dreams, Cod Fish Sandwich and Adult Grilled Cheese.

Prices range from $10.99 to $12.99.

“A lot of our menu is based on Sally's recipes,” says Sandman, who started at Dinghy's as a server in 2001 and worked her way up to general manager. “Everything is made in-house, even the mozzarella sticks and Bombas (a Jalapeno stuffed with Monterrey Jack and Cheddar Cheese, tucked into a wonton, and deep-fried) are made from scratch. We buy ingredients — nothing out of a box. We offer really great meals that our guests have come to enjoy over the years.”

: Sometimes a person fails to grasp that “It’s best we don’t maintain contact” means “Go away forever, human stain.”

You’re being “orbited,” culture reporter Anna Iovine’s word for when an ex lurks on your social media posts: showing up as one of your “story viewers” on Instagram or liking your tweets or Facebook posts. This sounds benign, but orbiting is a form of stalking.

Stalking is a confusing term because the behavior involved isn’t always considered criminal. The U.S. Department of Justice defines stalking as “engaging in a course of conduct directed at a specific person that would cause a reasonable person to fear for his or her safety or the safety of others or suffer substantial emotional distress.” Laws against stalking vary across states, but causing fear in the victim is typically essential for stalking to be a crime. Outside the criminal sphere, stalking is sometimes referred to by researchers as “unwanted persistent pursuit”: repeated behavior that bothers or distresses the victim, often sucking their time and attention and creeping them out.

Noncriminal stalking like this can escalate to the criminal kind — and can turn deadly, reports evolutionary psychologist David Buss in his new book, “When Men Behave Badly: The Hidden Roots of Sexual Deception, Harassment, and Assault.” Though stalkers are usually male, Buss acknowledges that women become stalkers, too. An infamous female stalker is former NASA astronaut Lisa Nowak — a case you might remember not so much for the crime but for the diapers.

In 2007, Nowak drove from Houston to Orlando wearing an adult diaper to avoid being slowed down by bathroom stops. She was off to confront (and possibly kidnap and harm) Air Force Captain Colleen Shipman, the slim, pretty blonde 10 years her junior whom NASA astronaut Bill Oefelein had dumped her for a few weeks prior.

Shipman told “Inside Edition” in 2017, “I ... still have anxiety,” and media reports often claim stalking is motivated by a desire to cause fear. However, making a victim afraid as the ultimate motivation for romantic stalking makes little sense (save for the few sadists in the population who get off on causing pain). Research by evolutionary psychologist Joshua Duntley and Buss suggests romantic stalking is a form of “mate guarding”: evolved tactics -- from coercion to showering affection to gift-giving -- used to keep one’s romantic partner from bolting or being poached.

Understanding, as Buss explains, that a “key goal” of romantic stalkers is to “reunite with the (former) partner” sheds light on your situation. You might be tempted to minimize the guy’s behavior because it’s happening in the virtual world. However, stalkers aren’t just exes hiding in your bushes with binoculars. It’s stalking just the same when somebody’s sitting in the bushes on social media, watching your life and signaling their unwillingness to accept your “no contact” terms by posting “likes” they know you’ll see. The message: “Here I am, refusing to leave you, but in a way you’d probably feel dumb complaining about!”

Sure, you could politely but firmly tell him to stop — “I’d prefer that you not post anything on my social media” — and explain why you need this. However, Buss writes that one of the strategies stalking experts most frequently recommend is “ceasing all contact with the stalker.” Because you’re being cyberstalked, the ideal way to do this is blocking him on all your social media. Say nothing.

Just block. Buss also advises you consider taking your accounts private for a while or “staying off social media as much as possible.”

If contact escalates, shore up security in your home with locks, motion sensor lights, and video surveillance; document all contact; and notify the police.

Blocking without explanation might seem unkind and perhaps a little paranoid.

However, Buss explains that “stalkers often construe any interaction” with the person they’re pursuing “as rewarding,” even if it’s negative. “Reasoning and logic rarely work.

They give the stalker hope that the romantic relationship can be renewed.” And this could lead to situations you’d surely like to avoid.

As the romantic cliche goes, “You’ll find love when you’re not looking for it” — like when it breaks in and stands over your bed, watching you sleep.
