THE NORTHERN CHAMBER ORCHESTRA ABOUT US Formed in the late 1960s and based in Manchester, the NCO is now one of the country’s top, professional chamber orchestras, with its concerts and recordings warmly received by critics. In a ground-breaking move in 1986, under their young leader, Nicholas Ward, NCO became one of the first orchestras in the country to work regularly without a conductor. During this, our 51st season, NCO will be performing with leading soloists such as Freddy Kempf, Julian Bliss, Martin Roscoe, Nicholas Mulroy and Matthew Wadsworth. Our newest Artist in Association – cellist,
baritone, actor and ‘Renaissance Man’ Matthew Sharp – joins us to display his virtuosic skills by both playing and singing in a concert of Schubert works. He will also work with the Education team on a variety of schools projects. The season comes to a close with our other Artist in Association, violinist Chloe Hanslip, who directs the orchestra in Manchester (where we are Orchestra in Association at The Stoller Hall), Macclesfield and Buxton in a concert of stunning strings. As well as being Orchestra in Residence at Buxton International Festival, NCO also has over thirty critically acclaimed recordings to its name including a series of Mozart and Haydn symphonies on the Naxos label. For more information visit www.ncorch.co.uk
We are proud of the ongoing relationship between NCO and Chetham’s School of Music, and look forward to continuing our collaboration at The Stoller Hall – Manchester’s newest space for performance.

AUDIENCE CAROLS Good King Wenceslas ALL: Good King Wenceslas looked out on the Feast of Stephen, When the snow lay round about, deep and crisp and even. Brightly shone the moon that night, though the frost was cruel, When a poor man came in sight, gath’ring winter fuel. MEN: “Hither, page, and stand by me, if you know it, telling, Yonder peasant, who is he? Where and what his dwelling?” WOMEN: “Sire, he lives a good league hence, underneath the mountain, Right against the forest fence, by Saint Agnes’ fountain.” MEN: “Bring me food and bring me wine, bring me pine logs hither, You and I will see him dine, when we bear them thither.” ALL: Page and monarch, forth they went, forth they went together, Through the cold wind’s wild lament and the bitter weather. WOMEN: “Sire, the night is darker now, and the wind blows stronger, Fails my heart, I know not how; I can go no longer.” MEN: “Mark my footsteps, my good page, tread now in them boldly, You shall find the winter’s rage freeze your blood less coldly.” ALL: In his master’s steps he trod, where the snow lay dinted; Heat was in the very sod which the saint had printed. Therefore, Christian men, be sure, while God’s gifts possessing, You who now will bless the poor shall yourselves find blessing.
AUDIENCE CAROLS O Come, All Ye Faithful O come, all ye faithful, Joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye, to Bethlehem Come and behold Him, Born the King of angels;
Lo! star led chieftains, Magi, Christ adoring, Offer Him incense, gold, and myrrh; We to the Christ Child Bring our hearts’ oblations.
Refrain
Refrain
O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.
Sing, choirs of angels, Sing in exultation; Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above! Glory to God, Glory in the highest;
See how the shepherds, Summoned to His cradle, Leaving their flocks, draw nigh to gaze; We too will thither Bend our joyful footsteps; Refrain

ST NICHOLAS CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL CHAMBER CHOIR
St Nicholas Catholic High School Choir are one of 4 choral groups in the school but is the only auditioned group and ranges in age from 12-18. This has already been a busy academic year for the music department at St Nicholas: At the start of November we undertook a Concert Tour to Dublin where the choir and instrumentalists performed in Christchurch Cathedral as well as performing as a flash mob pretty much wherever we went! Many of the pupils performing tonight were also part of the cast or band for our recent production of Sister Act which ran for 3 nights at the end of November. We are delighted to be performing again with the Northern Chamber Orchestra this evening and this will mark the start of the Christmas concert season for the choir.

Mendelssohn String symphony No. 10 7.30pm At The Heritage Centre Mozart Concerto for flute and harp Debussy Danse sacrée et danse profane Macclesfield Fauré Fantasy for flute and orchestra Haydn Symphony No. 39 Our first concert of the New Year brings a programme sure to beat the January blues with music of deftness of touch and warm sonorities. We begin the concert with a Mendelssohn sinfonia for strings in B minor, the one-movement no 10. This work by the 14-year-old composer, was considered to be lost until it was discovered in a Berlin library at the end of

WWII. The effervescent conclusion of the work leads us into a most charming and joyous concerto, Mozart’s flute and harp, played by two stars of the UK classical music scene, Katherine Baker and Lucy Wakeford. After the interval the two soloists return individually to each play a short French masterpiece, Debussy first, then Fauré. We close the concert with one of Haydn’s great and perhaps underperformed early symphonies, the G minor, no 39.
