A

s an English professor, Hannah Pralle might be viewed by students as the teacher who doesn’t exist outside of her English 105 classroom. Sadly for them, they have no idea about her singersongwriter project.

“[I’ve been interested in singing and songwriting] for a long time actually, since I was a kid, but just kind of off and on — I think I just kept getting scared of it or didn’t know what I was supposed to do with it,” Pralle said.

Pralle sang in her first two country bands when she was 16 and has continued writing music with fellow muscians and playing shows whenever she can.

“It’s weird, it’s like there’s no recognition for people who are doing it just [be]cause they love it. It’s like if you’re doing something artistic, you’re just supposed to make it,” Pralle said. “Seems like people who have a really strong drive to accomplish something aren’t really happy where they’re at or else they wouldn’t be trying so hard to get there.” see PRALLE page 10

ccording to the residents of the Southside of Flagstaff, students will look for any way to avoid paying the several hundred dollar parking fees to leave their car on campus — even if it is at the expense of blocking someone else’s driveway.

At a city council meeting on Tuesday, that exact issue was up for discussion, as Flagstaff is weighing levying fines on commuters who park alongside the roads of residential areas — fines that may be higher than the ones at NAU itself.

Coral Evans, a council member and Southside resident, said she is frustrated with the disrespect students have for residents when parking their cars along streets.

“I cannot tell you the number of times I have had to call the Flagstaff Police Department to ask them to please ticket and tow or find out who owns the car that is blocking me from getting into my driveway or getting out of my driveway. It is constant,” Evans said. “And you can’t tell me people don’t know that a driveway is being used, when there is a car in it.”

Opening of garage gates delayed

Erin Stam, the manager of the Office of Parking and Shuttle Services, said the toll parking structure was anticipated to be operational earlier, but technology and equipment issues have led to a delay in the switch. see GARAGE page 7

n Nov. 28, the Flagstaff Police Department received a call concerning the robbery of a Wells Fargo Bank on South Milton Road. This call would eventually lead to a standoff with police officers and the suspect committing suicide in a local hotel room. see ROBBERY page 10

PoliceBeat Nov. 21 At 3:07 p.m., students in the ROTC building called to report a group of subjects smoking marijuana near the on-campus observatory.

An officer was dispatched, but the group had left prior to officer arrival.

At 5:32 p.m., the staff with Mountain Link reported an intoxicated subject near the Wilson Hall bus stop.

An officer was dispatched, but the subject was gone upon arrival.

At 5:43 p.m., the staff at the du Bois Center reported an employee had been threatening another employee, and one of them was leaving the scene.

An officer was dispatched. The employee who left was contacted on a traffic stop at McConnell Drive and Beulah Boulevard and advised the matter had been resolved. The Sodexo supervisor advised the matter would be handled internally. The threats were unfounded, and everything was fine.

At 8:52 p.m., a student reported that, while riding her bicycle on the sidewalk near the Babbitt Administration Center, a male subject appeared out of a wooded area and began to chase her on foot. The student was able to flee without harm. The incident occurred at approximately 15 minutes before the report.

An officer was dispatched, and University Safety Aides assisted.

The wooded area was searched, but no suspicious activity or persons were found.

Nov. 22 At 8 a.m., an officer reported the staff at the Jacks Card Office informed him that a student was using a stolen credit card to add money to their account. The incident took place at an unknown time and date prior to Nov. 22 at 8 a.m. see POLICE page 3

At 1:22 p.m., a student reported their laptop had been stolen from the lobby area of the Health and Learning Center (HLC). The theft occurred on Nov. 21 between 5:10 p.m. and 9:20 p.m.

At 2:40 p.m., a resident of Reilly Hall reported her computer had been stolen from her room between 2:30 p.m. and 2:35 p.m.

At 9:05 p.m., a student reported a subject had called her and provided her with all of her personal information that had been taken from her online Xbox account.

Nov. 23 At 7:39 a.m., a staff member reported graffiti on an electrical box on the south side of the Science Lab. The damage occurred on Nov. 23, before the time of the report.

At 8:24 a.m., a student reported his vehicle had been broken into while parked in lot 36. The burglary had occurred between Nov. 22 at 5 p.m., and Nov. 23 at 8 a.m.

Nov. 24 At 9:25 a.m., an officer reported finding shoes south of the Capital Assets building, at the storage boxes. They appeared to belong to a member of the NAU marching band.

The shoes were taken to NAUPD. At 1:14 p.m., Chase Bank Securities reported a burglary alarm had been activated at the Chase ATM machine at the Bookstore.

An officer was dispatched, and the machine was checked. Everything appeared to be fine. The cause of the alarm is unknown.

Nov. 25 At 12:09 a.m., the staff at Sechrist Hall reported two subjects attempting to steal bicycles at the northeast bicycle racks.

An officer was dispatched. The subjects were unable to be located, and multiple bicycles were found unsecured. The unsecured bicycles were brought back to the department.

“[Because] this is the first set of gates we’ve ever installed, the delay is not surprising,” Stam said. “Although, it is disappointing, as we work to improve service for garage permit holders and guests to campus.”

The toll equipment has been installed for weeks, but has yet to be put in full use.

“The equipment is installed, and we are working to wrap up technical issues to ensure they are fully functional,” Stam said.

Stam also said the system will

be enforced during the week to ensure adequate spaces for permit holders in the structure.

Guests will be able to use the parking garage for $2 per hour or $10 for a day pass. Gates will be open on weekends for more flexible parking options for on-campus visitors.

Flag clinic to add men’s health, flu shot services Changes come in wake of Ariz. law placing restrictions on abortion providers

espite taking a blow from recent legislation restricting abortion services, Planned Parenthood Arizona (PPAZ) is expanding its services in Flagstaff starting Dec. 1. Among the new services are $20 flu shots and expanded services for men.

Dr. DeShawn Taylor, the medical director for PPAZ, said the clinic is preparing to implement procedures important to men’s health.

“There are infections that are related to sexual activity,” Taylor said. “We have some men that will get dermatological conditions on their reproductive organs, infections similar to urinary tract infections — but in men. Uncircumcised men have a host of issues that they face related to infection, and so we weren’t traditionally doing those types

of examinations and treatment, and now we have protocols for that.”

Taylor also said while men comprise a small percentage of PPAZ patients, she is pleased to address more men’s health issues.

“Right now, 6 percent of our total population of patients in our health centers are men, and the majority of that is for infection screening and treatment,” Taylor said. “So, there’s a lot more to male reproductive health services than infection treatment and prevention, so we’re happy to be able to cover some other issues that men face.”

Taylor said male clients need to be diligent about taking care of themselves.

orthern Arizona is once again monitoring earthquake activity by utilizing Flagstaff’s local seismograph. NAU geophysics professor Dave Brumbaugh is the founder and director of the Arizona Earthquake Information Center (AEIC) and revived Flagstaff’s seismograph in 1985.

Flagstaff’s seismograph is operated by the state of Arizona and monitors eight stations around northern Arizona. The seismograph collects data and provides insight on which faults are active in a certain area, which enables researchers to know zones that are more susceptible to earthquakes.

“The activity is much less frequent — and not as impressive, magnitude wise — as in Southern California,” Brumbaugh said. “We have to question that, given a fault of a certain length, what’s the largest size earthquake that could happen?”

Although Arizona lies 200-300 miles east of the San Andreas Fault, many earthquakes that occur in California still affect people in Arizona. Brumbaugh said the earthquakes that take place in Arizona are mild, but there is still a possibility of a high-magnitude quake.

“We might be influenced by the overall stress generated by [the San Andreas] boundary and impacted indirectly,” Brumbaugh said. “We have moderate earthquake risk here — they will happen again.”

NAU professor monitors earthquake activity with seismograph

Terry Cheiffetz, a senior in the geophysics program, accompanies Brumbaugh in his research on Flagstaff’s seismograph. He studies small, local earthquakes in Arizona by focusing on activity that shakes the ground. “[The Rayleigh wave] is a surface wave that makes the ground literally shake below your feet,” Cheiffetz said. “We are studying them in small-scale events where they are much more uncommon and infrequent.”

Cheiffetz said these waves are not as common in low-magnitude earthquakes, but are important to study. His research aims to figure out how small of an earthquake could produce destruction caused

by Rayleigh waves.

“We are trying to determine what the minimum size earthquake [would need to be], at a certain depth, to produce these particular types of waves would be,” Cheiffetz said. “To propagate surface waves takes a lot of energy, and understanding them at lower energies is very important.”

Both Brumbaugh and Cheiffetz agree that the community of Flagstaff and NAU’s students are fortunate to have access to this type of science experimentation.

“I believe that the NAU students are lucky to have such an amazing piece of equipment so close to their disposal,” Cheiffetz said. “You can walk right into the geology building and say, ‘Look at that, an earthquake happened today.’”

of his partner,” Taylor said.

Last month, legislation went into effect that allows medical personnel to refrain from taking part in abortions on moral or religious grounds. It also requires that a medical doctor perform all surgical abortions and that minors get notarized parental consent for abortions. There is also a mandatory 24-hour waiting period and information must be delivered in person.

Due to these restrictions, the PPAZ clinic in Flagstaff was no longer able to administer abortions.

Bryan Howard, the president and CEO of PPAZ, said while some might link PPAZ’s decision to expand to the recent Arizona legislation, it has been an ongoing process.

“The services that we’re in-

troducing, and the services that we will introduce in the weeks and months ahead, are all based on a strategic plan that the board of directors began developing in October of 2010 and adopted in its final form in June of this year,” Howard said. “It has five strategic focuses ­— ­one of them is to re-imagine how we deliver health care and what services we deliver to better serve Arizonans and how they live today.”

Howard said the Arizona clinic’s two goals are to broaden their services, and to make them more accessible.

“One is to re-imagine the services with the offer to make them easier to access and more affordably,” Howard said. “And [second], at the same time, looking at additional services that we can offer that will better help meet the health care needs of the patients we’re already seeing.”

Howard also said since PPAZ does not anticipate an economic upturn in the near future for young people in Arizona, they plan to make their services more affordable.

“Our speculation is that the economy for younger people, for less well-educated people, for unemployed people, is not going to rebound back quickly in Arizona,” Howard said. “We’re taking sort of a long view . . . and we’re planning as though there will continue to be a large number of younger Arizonans, both women and men, who need access to simple affordable health care. It’s just a basic part of our mission.”

Candace Ryan-Schmidt, the center manager for the PPAZ clinic in Flagstaff, said while the new services are not in effect yet, PPAZ still remains committed to educating their patients.

“The expanded services have

not gone into effect as of yet for our clinic,” Ryan-Schmidt said.

“But, when they do, we’re going to be offering new exams which are vital for prostate checks and [detecting] testicular masses. So, that’s a huge service we’ll be offering the male population in Flagstaff and the surrounding area. We will continue to, and always have, provided services for males and females regarding sexual education and sexual health.”

Ryan-Schmidt said while the recent legislation was a blow to the clinic, it was not as severe as some might think.

“There has been a decrease in patient numbers, but you have to remember that we’re a family planning clinic, and the abortion services were a real small portion of what we provided, and we still continue to provide an array of services that are the majority of what our patients come in for,” Ryan-Schmidt

Ryan-Schmidt added that despite the current economic climate, she remains optimistic that PPAZ will be able to serve its clients well.

NEWS BRIEFS — From the AP Wire Conservationists challenge mine FLAGSTAFF (AP) —A federal judge’s decision to allow a uranium mine to operate under an existing plan is being challenged.

Canadian mining firm Denison Mines Corp. runs the Arizona 1 mine. It’s located about 20 miles from the northern border of Grand Canyon National Park.

A group of conservationists and tribes sued the U.S. Bureau of Land Management last year, alleging the agency relied on an outdated and inadequate environmental analysis in allowing the mine to resume operation. Previous mining operations in the area ceased some 20 years ago.

A U.S. District Court judge sided with the BLM. The group appealed that decision to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday.

FLAGSTAFF (AP) —A fire inside a Flagstaff business early Friday is under investigation.

The fire department says the fire started around midnight at Arizona Power and Supply.

Crews arrived and found heavy smoke coming from the business.

Firefighters forced entry and located the fire and put the flames out. The business has heavy damage inside and there were no injuries to fire department personnel.

Brophy Prep. fires teacher over sex allegations PHOENIX (AP) —Officials at Brophy College Preparatory School in Phoenix say a longtime math teacher has been dismissed amid allegations of sexual abuse.

Brophy officials say Dan Whitehead is accused by two former students who now are adults of inappropriate sexual advances when they were minors.

The Arizona Republic says Whitehead has been a Brophy lay faculty member since 1979.

Brophy President Edward Reese says he has reported the allegations to Phoenix police and the school has terminated Whitehead’s employment.

Police say Brophy contacted them on Nov. 18 and the alleged abuse occurred in the 1980s.

Reese sent out a letter to parents of students and alumni on the situation Tuesday.

It’s unclear whether Whitehead has legal representation yet.

“Officers got on scene and learned that there was a lone suspect who entered the bank and either produced or simulated that he had a weapon,” said James Jackson, of FPD. “[He] gave the teller a note, or a letter, demanding money. The subject then obtained the money and left the bank.”

Through surveillance video, officers were able to identify the suspect as Conal Smith, 25.

Smith fled the bank east toward the NAU campus. An alert was issued by the NAU Police Department to students and the Flagstaff community concerning the robbery and the possible presence of the suspect on campus.

Coconino County court records show Smith was previously convicted of attempted robbery in 2008.

Witnesses assisted in leading police to Smith’s location at the Super 8 Motel on

South Milton Road and West Route 66.

According to Jackson, police officers attempted to negotiate with Smith — who had barricaded himself in his hotel room — for more than 90 minutes. Citing the need for a break, Smith stopped all communication with investigators and, after midnight, a gunshot was heard from inside the hotel room.

“The tactics cooperation’s team immediately entered the room, finding that Mr. Smith was suffering from a self-initiated gunshot wound to the head,” Jackson said. “Within moments, he was getting medical attention and was subsequently transported to the Flagstaff Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.”

According to Jackson, the investigation is currently ongoing. At the time of print, FPD reports there is no apparent motive for the robbery, and no other suspects are under investigation.

Editorial&Opinion Police violence against Occupy protesters intensifies, is deplorable STAFF EDITORIAL

t. John Pike is a person every college student in America should be familiar with. A campus police officer at UC Davis, John Pike was just casually strolling down campus when a whole bunch of mean students got in his way!

These particular students (or “hippies,” as they ought to be referred to!) were Occupy protestors.

Joking aside, if you are not familiar with the Occupy movement and their cries of “We are the 99 percent” by now, here’s a brief breakdown: Occupy is an international movement against social and economic inequality. Their main demands are clear, despite a campaign that suggests otherwise: Get money out of politics and reform the banking system, amongst others of economic and political import.

Pike was actually in a group of officers responding to the presence of student Occupy protesters on UC Davis’s campus who had formed a human chain. The officers ordered the protesters to leave, and when they didn’t, Lt. Pike and another officer circled the group, almost lazily pepper-spraying them.

An eight-minute video of the incident was posted on YouTube.

The video is a perfect example of the sort of blatant police misconduct that has surrounded the Occupy movement. In New York, Seattle and Oakland, incidents of police brutality have resulted in hospi-

tal visits for protestors, the pepper spraying of an 84-year-old woman and at least one miscarriage. The citizens, of course, have no method to defend themselves. To fight back against a police officer is to risk serious jail time, or worse, death.

According to OccupyArrests. com, 4,271 protestors in 65 cities in the United States alone have been

arrested as of this writing.

It would be one thing if the Occupy protesters had been violent toward police — then police would be justified in using non-lethal force to prevent further violence. Every indication points to the opposite reality, though. These are peaceful protesters, whose strongest actions consist of yelling and waving signs.

Those are not behaviors that justify physical violence. Those are behaviors of democratic citizens practicing their right to free speech.

So what is it about the Occupy movement that has drawn this sort of ire from police? The protests have been peaceful, and Occupy is a movement fighting for reasonable things. The Tea Party, as a recent

example, has held similar protests without the sort of treatment Occupy has received. Imagine for a second that they had. While you do, keep in mind that many Tea Partiers came to protests armed.

As it turns out, the Mayor of Oakland admitted in mid-November that the Department of Homeland Security had been involved in an 18-city conference with the purpose of educating mayors on “how to suppress” the Occupy movement.

This is a terrifying thought. The Department of Homeland Security cannot act on it’s own. It answers to Representative Peter King from New York, and then directly above him, the President.

It is hard to ignore the implications of that.

Whether you agree with the Occupy movement or not, in America this sort of response to peaceful protest is unacceptable. When Egypt’s military and China’s government are using the behavior of our police to justify their own, we as a country have an issue, outside of those being protested by the Occupy protesters.

It is fitting that the giggling of officers in the video at UC Davis turns into real fear as the crowd turns on them. Regardless of whether it’s in response to Occupy, the Tea Party, or anyone else, the idea that the people — not the government or the wealthy — are in charge needs to be reaffirmed in the minds of those in power.

Fracking a serious enviromental concern

H

as anyone honestly ever seen water catch fire? What about methane gas bubble up from the ground? Many Americans probably have not seen such sights, but it is happening across the country.

What is causing such oddities?

Hydraulic fracking.

Known simply by many as just “fracking,” this form of natural gas drilling is popping up all across the country.

Fracking is a proShane cess in which a drill Pogue bores down into the earth for about two miles to reach a shale deposit.

Then a mixture of water, sand and chemicals are injected into the hole to fracture the sedimentary rock to extract the gas. Catch is, the gas is liquid at this point and will need to be made into a gaseous substance.

News stations, like MSNBC, have broadcasted commercials on this subject claiming it is safe.

Of course, these commercials are

coming from the companies that are fracking. Here is why it is not safe: On multiple occasions, the chemicals have found ways to seep into the water table, and taint the water. This is normally performed in rural areas where locals rely on the ground water. Obviously this is a problem. People are drinking water that may contain chemicals like those found in soaps, detergents and furniture polish.

During the initial drilling, fracking uses about 65,000 gallons of water. Over the lifetime of the well, it will require about 5 million gallons more. The waste water created has to go somewhere. At drill sites it is not unusual to see open pits of water, sometimes with misters spraying water into the air. They are allowing the waste water (and the chemicals in the water) to go into the air. This is now a double whammy for people living near a drilling site.

These things have actually already happened. Josh Fox, a resident of Pennsylvania, was offered $100,000 so a gas company could

drill on his property. Fox, curious about the offer, decided to investigate. What Fox found was horrifying. He interviewed people in his documentary, titled GasLand, from as far away as Wyoming, and found out all the stories were true. People were in fact lighting the water from their taps on fire. There were stories of people getting sick, animals dying and land becoming uninhabitable.

Gas and oil companies continue to insist fracking is safe. There is even a plan to drill in upstate New York that could impact the state’s ground water. Environmentalists are speaking out trying to get tougher regulations or a safer way to extract natural gas.

The United States has one of the world’s largest natural gas reserves. It has been said to be the equivalent of “two Middle Easts.” Currently fracking is not guaranteed to be safe. For now, health and safety should be considered first before profit. Finding a better, safer way to get natural gas should be discovered before any more drilling is done.

Democrats aim to protect birth control coverage

W

ith the election of Barack Obama, women sighed with relief thinking that inexpensive access to birth control was in safe hands.

With a president who supports abortion rights, how could access to contraceptives even be an issue? Now, however, President Obama is considering giving exemptions for coverage to institutions such as employers, universities or even Amanda hospitals who do horner not want sponsor it for moral or religious reasons. This is a major hindrance to the Obama administration’s advocacy and protection of women’s health. But now Democrats in Congress are pushing and urging Obama to ensure birth control is protected under health insurance plans for all women.

It is lucky that Democrats have

been fighting back in the name of women’s rights. They fought hard to keep birth control covered in the new Health Care Reform Bill, and aren’t going to have their hard work be for nothing. There have been conference calls to White House advisors expressing discontent with the situation, but Obama has not made a decision yet.

Religious institutions have claimed that forcing them to provide birth control is a violation of their religious beliefs and freedoms, calling it an “unprecedented attack on religious liberty.” But the fact of the matter is that millions of women who work for these institutions may need or want birth control, and they have the absolute right to it. Birth control falls under “preventative health services” and they are required in the new health care bill. Prescription birth control is extremely costly, and having it affordable — or better yet, free — is crucial to women’s health

and safety. To reduce the coverage of birth control for women would be a step backward, and yet the Obama administration claims to be in favor of such services. It would be a mistake for Obama to decide to grant these institutions exemption, especially with elections right around the corner.

Exemptions for providing birth control already exist for “religious employers” but the Catholic Church is not satisfied with this. They claim they want birth control exemptions for any non-profit and tax exempt institution affiliated with a religion that does not wish to advocate birth control. It may seem rational, but it’s really not; women have the right to privacy and choosing access to any form of birth control that best fits their lifestyle. Taking away this access has devastating consequences for women, and if birth control is mandated under health care it should remain so.

I would just like you to know that the NAU Badjacks as a whole are extremely disappointed that some one would have the nerve to write and run an opinion piece of this nature. We are incredibly offended, hurt, and some of us, tremendously angry. Yes, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but what kind of credible source are you? What do you know about the history, nature, sweat, hard work, dedication, emotion, practice, time or any other element of dance? Yes, we had some pieces that were targeted specifically for an adult audience, however we were professional and put a disclaimer in the program. These programs were handed out before the show started, therefore the audience was warned before a single dancer set foot out on the stage. This is a college dance team, and when performing at a university, the targeted audience expected to fill the auditorium are mainly adults. You bashed our entire showcase as a whole, and this article was unbearable for any of us to read at more than two or three sentences at a time. Some of the comments that were made were down right disrespectful and hurtful. How dare you question our abilities and our level of confidence and skill? How dare you even attempt to write an opinion piece when you are not even close to a credible source on the topic of dance? We are hurt, not embarrassed; you should be the one who is embarrassed. We have had people who are not even apart of our team inform us how angry they are about this article. The comments that you made referring to our hip-hop team were completely uncalled for and out of line. You polarized the hip hop team from the jazz team, when in reality, we are one large family. A family made up of 80 dancers, all who are devastated that someone like you, would blast all of our hard work and dedication to the entire student body. As stated earlier, we are open to criticism, but there are different and more professional ways to go about getting us your opinion. We hope you enjoyed being the hero for your 484 words of fame. However, actions speak louder than words, and almost all of the feedback we have received on thEmotions thus far has been immensely positive.

Maybe next time you want to demoralize another student organization, you’ll think about other people’s feelings instead of your own.

Pralle has done something, though. She used her talents to help her father. Her love for music and even bigger love for her family came together when a freak fire burned down Pralle’s father’s house the Monday before Halloween, which couldn’t have happened at a worse time.

“My mom just died in July, and [my dad] took care of her the whole time. She died at home, and he was just recovering from that,” Pralle said. “They were married for forty years, and so three months later he just came back from the store and his house had burned down.”

With a show scheduled for the Friday after the incident, Pralle was ready to fly out to be with her father. She decided, however, to play the show as a benefit concert and raise money.

“It was really amazing because a lot of people know me from playing in town and stuff, but they don’t know my dad, so it was a lot of help for someone that they didn’t know,” Pralle said.

Between posting flyers, accumulating an email list of fans, having a sign up list at every show, having a Facebook for notifications — sharing her music has really paid off.

“We did a lot of marketing and put together a little table that had as much information as possible, and we had a big jar there for donations,” Pralle said. “I also put together a donation link on my website through a PayPal account, and in two and a half weeks . . . we got $2,800 donated.”

After the generous gratitude and donations having been received, Pralle was able to join her father and give him the check and condolences collected.

“I told him a lot of people have been thinking about him and he said that he could feel it, which was so sweet,” Pralle said.

Pralle says her father should be okay and is lucky to have so many people be there for him.

think I have HIV but am unsure how to tell my partner. We are gay (guys). How would be the best way to tell him?” -HIV Positive Breaking the news to your partner that you may have an STI can be very daunting, especially when that STI is HIV. There are multiple ways to go about informing him without scaring the hell out of him. Consider timing of the conversation, location and they way in which you tell him. You probably wouldn’t want to break the news after a sexual encounter or somewhere public like a crowded store. Also, address the topic like you’re serious about it as well.

Don’t just shrug it off like it’s nothing because your HIV status could very possibly affect his as well.

If you think only you have HIV, you will definitely want to get tested. Whether it’s from a previous sexual partner or you’re having symptoms, you need to get tested right away. There are a few resources around Flagstaff that offer HIV testing. Coconino Health Center offers free testing to certain individuals in Flagstaff and works on a sliding scale for others, meaning the cost of the test is in direct relation to your income status. Other places include North Country Health, Planned Parenthood and even Fronske. Also, depending on the time of year, free HIV testing is offered in dif-

ferent locations around campus. Keep your eyes peeled for flyers or emails indicating free testing being offered at NAU. All locations offer confidentiality and quick turnaround on testing time.

Be prepared for different reactions from your partner and expect them to be upset, sad, angry or just plain overwhelmed. It takes a while for someone to come to terms with the news that a loved one has been infected with HIV, so don’t push them to talk if they’re not ready. After the news has had time to settle, remember to discuss the risks of transmission, safer sex strategies, how this can change your lives, possible treatment and how you can support each other. Remind him that just because you are HIV-positive doesn’t mean he is as well, but he should not wait to get tested either.

While you don’t have to tell everyone you know about your HIV status, many states to require by law that you tell anyone you could potentially transmit the virus to. It may be best that you contact an HIV counselor about your relationship and how to best manage the news you’ve recently received. They can help to advise you into the right conversation-starter as well.

Telling your partner you may have HIV will definitely be a harder conversation than most you’ve had in your relationship but letting him know your status will enable him to make well-informed decisions about his own health and safety as well as to offer you the support you may need while going through the testing and diagnosis.

ild boars have always been Gary’s favorite animals to stuff. He likes them because their faces are easy to manipulate into different positions.

The trick is to get the snout to point up a little at the tip and make the mouth look like the little bastard is snarling. Gary clicks on his flashlight and aims the light at the snout. He examines the gaping nostrils of the boar to make sure they’re evenly shaped, poking at skin around the upper lip with a long q-tip.

“I suppose that’ll do, lil’ fella,” Gary says while smiling at the boar’s stiff face. Gary is a distinguished-looking older man, standing tall with medium length salt and pepper hair that is parted to the side. He has blue eyes and is wearing blue jeans with a long-sleeved, faded red shirt that looks like it is made of denim.

The phone rings and the back of Gary’s neck tenses up as he clenches his right fist. Ever since the bank started calling about the loan every other day, the sound of the phone’s ring has become something Gary fears and despises. The phone continues to ring and Gary plays with the idea of not answering, but decides no good will come from ignoring these people.

“Earle Taxidermy. Can I help you?”

“Yes, Mister Earle. My name is Connie Sanders and I’m calling on behalf of Brick Bank. I spoke to you earlier about your loan payment.”

“Ah, Miss Sanders. How could I forget?”

“Sorry to bother you while you’re at work. I just need to confirm that you’ll be making a payment of $1,200 on your loan by the 15th in addition to the $1,200 you owe from last month.”

“Look, I told you Monday and I’ll tell you again. I ain’t got the money right now. I’ll pay you as soon as I can, but you’re just gonna have to wait.”

“I’m sorry to hear about your situation Mister Earle, but you’re legally obligated to make the payments. Is there some way you can pay the $1,200 from last month, this week?”

“I don’t know how to make myself any more clear about this. I don’t have the money, and I’m not makin’ any right now. I realize you’re just doing your job, but reason with me here. There’s nothing I can do right now. My hands are absolutely tied. If I caught fire, I couldn’t afford the water to put myself out.”

“Mister Earle, I need to inform you that if you don’t make the payment for last month and make the current payment by the end of next Friday, we will have some serious problems. Do you possibly have a family member that can help you with the payment? We really need to start collecting as soon as possible.”

“Listen you cow, I ain’t got the money! I don’t know what you don’t get about that. Now, I told you I’ll pay you bloodsuckers as soon as I can, but that ain’t this week.”

“Mister Earle, I understand your frustration, but your language is offensive and unnecessary.”

“Goodbye, Miss Sanders!”

Gary slams the phone down and lets out a long sigh. He leans forward and puts his hand against the wall as he runs his other hand over his parted hair. He feels guilty about how he called the woman a cow. I don’t even know her, Gary thought. She could be a very nice lady. She’s just doing her job. I shouldn’t have yelled and hung up on her. That’s not how a man should act. Gary grabs his half empty beer and finishes the remaining lukewarm fluid in a few gulps.

Gary takes his other hand off the wall and sits back down on his stool to finish the crossword puzzle he started before he fixed up the boar. He looks at his watch and notices it’s almost time to close for the day. One day, one customer. He tosses the empty beer can into the wastebasket next to his see TAXIDERMIST page 18

The front door of Earle Taxidermy opens and the small bell on the top of the doorframe rings. Gary stands up from his wooden stool in the back room and walks to the front of the shop. All four sap-green walls have deer and boar’s heads hanging from them, each with a unique glazed-over look on their face. Bobcats and squirrels litter shelves that fill up any space of the walls that aren’t claimed by the heads. Gary approaches the front desk where a small brown-haired boy with a wiry frame is poking a stuffed raven’s beak. “Can I help you young man?”

Before the boy can answer an old man with light-brown skin walks through the door. “Gary! How the hell are ya?”

“Manny! My stars, it’s been what, nine years? What brings you around the old shop?” Manny is a Vietnam veteran who ran the only other taxidermy business in town for many years. He is short with a lazy eye, grey beard and white hair that has almost completely disappeared on the top.

“This here is my grandson, Jimmy.” Jimmy is a 10-year-old boy with dark-brown hair that is cut in the shape of a bowl. His eyes are the same color as his hair and his skin looks pale and soft.

“We were hunting out there in Rumtide Valley and the boy got his first squirrel.”

“Well how about that, young man? Rumtide Valley huh?

Sounds like a lucky place.”

“Yeah, it was so cool. I saw him comin’ down the tree and when he got to the bottom, I let him have a good one.”

“Well, well. Sounds like we got ourselves a natural.”

Manny places a wrinkled, brown paper bag that is folded at the top onto the desk.

“Here’s the little critter. Think you can fix him up nice for us, Gary?

“Oh, I think I’ll be able to manage. I gotta ask though, Manny, why aren’t you doing this one yourself?”

“Oh, I’m not in the taxidermy business anymore. I was half shocked to see this place still open. You know with the economy and all. How are y’all holding up anyhow?”

Gary thinks about telling Manny that his business is days away from shutting down and how he owes the bank more money than he’d like to think about, but shakes the urge on account of the boy.

“We’ve seen better days. It’s been a tough two years. Our numbers have been down about 20, sometime even 30 percent.

Gas prices are up so damn high that people don’t want to travel as far to hunt if they’re going at all. Then on top of the fact that it’s $100 for something small like a squirrel and $400 to get a deer head. It’s a lot to ask these days. People just don’t come in the store as much.”

“That’s a shame to hear, Gary. It really is. I’m sure you’ll land on your feet.”

“I sure hope you’re right, old timer.”

Manny and Jimmy follow Gary to the back room. The back room is covered in the same drab, sap-green wallpaper. The walls smell like rotten paper and fabric that tells anyone who knows about dry wall that they have been damaged by water.

Gary walks over to his workbench that is coated in feathers and oddly shaped tools and grabs a large bottle of Jack Daniels. Sitting next to the bottle is a withered looking stuffed owl with large yellow eyes. Gary reaches behind the stuffed owl and grabs

three scotch glasses. He pours Jack Daniels into two of the cups locks it when they leave. He puts the closed sign up in the front and fills up the third with water from a faucet next to his workwindow and leans back on the front door looking at all the bench. heads staring at him. SportsReport Football keeps working to no avail, culture needs change

T

he NAU football team seemed to take a page out of the Finding Nemo playbook through the season, though they did change it up a bit. Instead of “just keep swimming,” they altered the saying to “just keep working.” There were many variations of that phrase being said during press conferences and post game almost like they COMMENTARY interviews, were trying to set a Guinness World Record.

The problem was nothing really seemed to change.

Week after week, the Jacks appeared to be going through brett the motions and only wound murdock up with victories because they happened to be playing lesser-talented teams. Finishing with a record of 4–7, NAU’s only major win came on the road against Sacramento State. Their losses were by an average of just over five points per game, proving while they can play with the Big Sky Conference’s big guns, they cannot beat them.

Women’s basketball stays dominant at home, wins first tourney

T

he NAU women’s basketball team added to its trophy collection over the holiday weekend by winning the Hilton Garden Inn Thanksgiving Classic, improving to 4–3 on the season.

“We’re coming together, slowly but surely,” said junior shooting guard Amy Patton.

The women are currently undefeated at home and plan on staying unbeaten in the Rolle Activity Center.

“We are trying to get the mentality that [for] people coming into our gym, it’s going to be hard to win, in our mind,” said head coach Laurie Kelly. “We want to become a team that wins all their games at home.”

The ladies closed the weekend with a victory over the Golden Flashes of Kent State, 72–56.

Kent State committed 31 turnovers through the game, including 18 in the first half, giving NAU 30 more attempts at the bucket than the Golden Flashes.

Patton led the team with 14 points and

eight boards; combined with her 17 points and 12 rebounds from the previous game against Utah Valley, earned tournament MVP honors.

Joining Patton on the awards floor was junior center Aubrey Davis, who was named to the All-Classic team by tallying 16 points and 11 rebounds during the weekend.

Senior small forward Caty Huntington and sophomore shooting guard Amanda Frost added nine points apiece to help the Lumberjacks past the Golden Flashes.

The Lumberjacks began the tournament with a victory over the Wolverines of Utah Valley, 73–59.

After getting injured in the exhibition game against Azusa Pacific, junior shooting forward Tyler Stephens-Jenkins made her return for NAU. Stephens-Jenkins scored 13 points, and Davis notched 10, lifting the Jacks past the Wolverines.

“Amy’s line was about as good as you could probably get, and getting Tyler back is obviously huge for us,” Kelly said. “Our inside play from Aubrey Davis and Shay May was great as well, and we just played good team

basketball to get the win.”

NAU played strong from the beginning, keeping its lead the majority of the first half.

The Jacks scored 36 points, grabbed 22 rebounds, eight steals and 10 assists through the first.

“We thought we would get the lead then give it up,” Davis said. “We wanted to get the lead for sure.”

NAU grabbed 44 rebounds, 26 defensive, but a majority of their fouls were under the basket.

“They like to grab,” Patton said. “I know coach is going to work with the posts on that at practice.”

In the second half, the Lumberjacks scored 37 points and converted 43.3 percent of their shots. They also held the Wolverines to 26 points after half time.

The Jacks shot 10–19 from the freethrow line, making 56 percent of their shots, compared to 75 and 74 percent from their first two games.

“That’s easy to fix,” Davis said. “Just get in the gym and practice.”

Lacrosse returns and looks to Men’s hoops defeats Northern New Mexico rebuild team from ground up

T

he NAU men’s lacrosse team is back this season after a year away from the field. Due to lack of funding and players, the club was forced to disassemble, which has happened in previous years.

“We didn’t take a year off by choice,” said sophomore co-captain Conor Hawblitzel. “We didn’t have enough people.”

Sophomore co-captain Hayden Heigel and Hawblitzel took the initiative to begin recruiting to construct a team this year after the team fell through last season.

“Conor and I started this, started coming out [to practice], right after school started around August,” Heigel said. “Since then, we have been trying to recruit people on campus.”

Beginning in August, Heigel and Hawblitzel started recruiting interest-

ed students, and as of now, anywhere from 30 to 40 players have responded.

The ultimate goal, however, would be to expand their roster, because it is rare to have the entire team attend practice every week.

“We are just trying to grow and earn respect from the league. [The club is not part of a league yet, but hopes to join the Southwestern Lacrosse Conference.] We aim to get into the league next year; it’s kind of what this year is about, is building and getting players,” Heigel said. “[The goal is] just letting people know that we are here.”

For most of the guys on the team, they have never played, nor met each other before this year. So how does the team create chemistry?

earning curves are an important part of growth for anyone, including the NAU men’s basketball team.

After easily dismissing Arizona Christian four nights earlier, the inexperienced Jacks had trouble putting away the visiting Northern New Mexico (NNM) Eagles but managed to record a 80–49 victory, improving to 2–3 on the new season.

“At times, I can’t say it was the greatest intensity,” said head coach Mike Adras. “I thought we played much better in the second half, though. All in all, [when] you win by 30 points, there’s not a lot to complain about.”

The main threat on the night was freshman forward Gaellan Bewernick, who had 14 points and 11 boards, recording his first career double-double. Junior point guard Stallon Saldivar also had a

solid game, scoring 11 points and handing out seven assists.

“I just came out and played as hard as I could,” Bewernick said. “Just trying to lift everybody’s spirits and have everybody feed off me. I missed all of last year because of my foot, and that’s kind of my motivation right now.”

Sophomore guard Michael Dunn scored eight points and recorded six assists and junior guard Luis Flores buried two 3-pointers for his six points to go along with three assists, with both players earning praise from their coach.

“Mike Dunn [and] Lou Flores stepped into starters’ roles before the game and did a really nice job,” Adras said. “If you tell me we’re going to get nine assists and [just] two turnovers from those guys, I’d tell you I’m really happy about those guys who have spent a lot of time in this program and now are getting the opportu-

nity to do something.”

The Lumberjacks struggled with turnover problems and an out-of-sync offense, allowing NNM to remain in the game halfway through the first frame. With just over 10 minutes to play in the half, the Eagles were down 19–16.

Douglas gave the spark needed, rattling off eight consecutive points to increase the lead to double digits. From there, the Jacks stretched their lead to 44–27 at the break, behind the strong play of Saldivar and Bewernick.

“We didn’t play up to the energy we brought against Arizona Christian,” Saldivar said. “It could have been that, or it could have been anything. We can’t win a lot of games with that type of effort.”

“It’s interesting,” Heigel said. “We try to have scrimmages on the weekends and that’s where we get our bonding time.”

Despite most of the members of the club not having any lacrosse experience, they participated in other high school sports and showcased their athleticism there.

Among the newcomers to the squad is junior Jack Carson, who participated in football and hockey.

“I never played [Lacrosse] before,” Carson said. “My friend got me a stick one summer because he played in college. It was a lot of fun playing catch. When I came to NAU and heard they are getting a lacrosse team started, I put my name on it [the list], got an email from Hayden and came out.”

Not having played lacrosse before this year does not stop the motivated junior in trying to do his best every day at practice.

“As a beginner, I’m someone for an experienced player to bounce off of,” Carson said. “So when they try to teach them something, it reaffirms it in them, and it makes them better at something. Like when they teach me a move, or a play or a boxed offense and a manneddown defense, when they teach it to me, when I learn that, it helps everyone.”

The Lumberjacks are searching for a head coach after previous coaches did not show any interest. Currently, Hawblitzel and Heigel are the coaches. However, the team is looking for anyone interested in such a position.

“It’s just Conor and I coaching,” Heigel said. “The coach that was going to coach last year left. So, we are look-

ing for a coach. It’s hard, and there aren’t that many people here, right? So it’s hard.”

But Heigel is still positive about the situation.

“Anyone pretty much could be a coach. If one of us gets hurt, that could be our new coach, but we are still looking for anyone [to be the coach].”

From a coaching perspective, Heigel said the attacking line is the strongest aspect of the team, but it is difficult for them to evaluate the team when the captains need more students to come to practice.

“There aren’t tryouts, but practices are open,” Hawblitzel said. “If people want to come out, they are more than welcome to do so. We are trying to get more people out there. It’s a lot of fun; we need more people to come out to the practices.”

Practices have started this semester, but the season will begin in the spring. The team currently meets twice a week for two hours. In the future, the team will practice three days a week, including conditioning.

To cover the fees associated with club sports, there is the option of fundraising, which the team will be participating in, as well as an annual fee to buy equipment and new uniforms for the upcoming year.

Hawblitzel said he is eager to see how the Jacks stack up against other teams.

“We want to win some games; we will take as many as we can get,” Hawblitzel said.

Despite setbacks, Hawblitzel said he is optimistic about the future for the lacrosse team.

“I see more people in the future, fun games [and] great workouts next semester,” Carson said, while Heigel screamed, “A championship, a championship.”

just could not find ways to pull them out. They fell behind big against Portland State, but still made it a game. Against Eastern Wahington and Montana, NAU jumped out to double-digit leads early but failed to close. Playing Weber State, the Jacks held a late lead, but allowed the Wildcats to pull off the win thanks to NAU’s mistakes. In the final game against Southern Utah, the blue and gold once again held a sizable advantage but allowed the Thunderbirds to complete a comeback win.

The optimist would look at this year’s team and say, “Well, they tried hard. Just did not catch the breaks they needed.” On the other hand, the realist would say, “Well, you’re an idiot.” There should be no moral victories for this team, especially after the way they tremendously flamed out in years past. This team should not have taken solace in the fact that they played the top-team’s close.

But that theme of “just keep working” rings loud through the team and the fan base alike. Week after week, the Jacks vowed to get back on the practice field and make adjust-

ments for the next game. There is no problem with that. The problem lies with how they said it — very meekly and nonchalantly.

If there’s anything this team needs to work on, it is developing a new attitude. Some of these guys are just too damn nice. It’s been said a team takes on the personality of its coach, and that theory could have used this team as its base. Head coach Jerome Souers is a nice enough guy and all, but seems to lack that killer instinct most winners display at every level.

I’m not saying get rid of the guy, but if his players are not willing to change their outlook, then it most likely needs to start at the top.

Souers needs to be willing to develop a bit of harshness to him — be willing to chew players out, get more irritated at the officials, show a little dark side.

The bottom line is, no matter how hard they keep working, the NAU football team has created their own stigma around the campus. Ask a student on a game day why they are not at the Skydome and the most common reply is, “They suck.” There needs to be something done — time for the Jacks to work on that.

Arts&Entertainment Traditional Flagstaff Christmas-light events shine

he brightest and most decorated house in the neighborhood is most likely to attract Santa’s attention first. Therefore, every December, people around the world bring light to the darkness of winter and come together in the merriment of the holiday season.

One of the longest running Flagstaff traditions is the annual Winter Wonderland Celebration, hosted by the Flagstaff Recreation Services for over 20 years. On Dec. 2, the event will begin with a treelighting ceremony on north campus and later transition to the heart of downtown, Heritage Square and Wheeler Park.

What first began as a quaint little lighting ceremony in front of City Hall is now a large community event with lots of different activities to partake in, including NAU’s luminary display, tree light-

ing ceremonies, holiday music, arts and crafts and visits with special guests Mayor Sara Presler and Santa Claus.

Glorice Pavey, the annual event coordinator for Flagstaff Recreation Services, said the city decided to integrate the event with First Friday Artwalk this year to encourage people to shop local for their holiday gifts.

“This year is especially exciting because we’re working with a bunch of different events throughout the community,” Pavey said. “The event will be at Heritage Square to tie in with the First Friday Artwalk — it is a great opportunity to get a start on your holiday shopping.”

Mayor Presler has been present at the Winter Wonderland Celebration the past four years, and this year she will be traveling in a fire truck along with Santa from north campus to south downtown to light a giant holiday wreath at the

Southside Downtowner Tower on the corner of San Francisco Street and Phoenix Avenue.

“I love watching the eyes of our Flagstaff children light up,” Presler said.

“That is so exciting.”

After the NAU’s luminary display and tree lighting ceremony at 5:30 p.m., Flagstaff residents can meet Mayor Presler and Santa at the Downtowner at 6:15 p.m. and later walk to Heritage Square at 6:30 p.m. for Christmas celebrations and another lighting ceremony at Wheeler Park. There will also be a story session for children and families to attend at the public library through the event.

Pavey said she is looking forward to working with Presler and Santa and being a part of the first time the Downtowner will be lit together with the community.

irginia native Keller Williams’ unique sound consists of a blend of bluegrass, rock, reggae, folk, funk and electronica. He has been performing and recording music since the early 1990s, and has toured alongside Yonder Mountain String Band, The String Cheese Incident, Umphrey’s McGee and Ratdog. Williams has become renowned for utilizing the method of phase looping in his solo live performances, and has recorded over 15 studio albums. He will be playing a live show at 9 p.m. on Dec. 3 at the Orpheum Theater. The Lumberjack was able to interview Williams while he was relaxing at his home outside Fredericksburg, Virginia, and talk to him about his musical origins and passions.

The Lumberjack (LJ): At what age did you begin learning to play the guitar? You’re entirely self-taught, correct?

Keller Williams (KW): Well, I definitely had a friend show me a couple chords when I was about 13. I think I got a guitar when I was about three and pretended to play it for many years, and a good

itty, charming and timelessly enjoyable, The Muppets (2011) was no less than what was expected from these loveable characters. They managed to bring up old emotions for long-time fans and please the more unfamiliar generations with their witty banter and numerous cameos. These familiar characters achieve a memorable comeback and created a two-in-one feature where nostalgia and humor meet.

The Muppets begins with a montage to introduce the two brothers Walter and Gary (Jason Segel) as they grow up together, sharing a home and a life.

Gary plans on celebrating his 10-year anniversary in Los Angeles with the lovely Mary (Amy Adams) and invites his brother along. While visiting LA, Walter’s ultimate goal is to visit an old location that commemorates his favorite celebrities: The Muppets Studio.

Conflict arises as Walter overhears the oil tycoon Tex Richman (Chris Coo-

per) discuss his evil plot to destroy the Muppets Studio for his own greedy affairs. Walter is devastated and plans to counter Richman’s attack by rounding up the old Muppets crew in the hopes they can raise enough money to buy the studio back. In the grand scheme of things, there are various sub-conflicts introduced that force Gary and Walter to find their passions and places in their lives. The rest of the film is a journey back into the world of the Muppets’ old haunts with just the right amount of hilarity to balance out the cheesy, lessonlearning moments often found with the Muppets.

This film managed to do everything right from the get-go. Segel composed a script that is very self-aware of the emotional and nostalgic appeal that will it will have on audiences, and everything about it worked extremely well. There was no shortage of musical numbers and disgustingly corny dialogue, although they were still perfectly balanced out by blatant references to how the characters were in a movie,

constantly breaking the fourth wall.

Not only did the feel of the film succeed in causing the audience to bubble over with joy, but the production and the acting only improved the brilliance.

Each dance number and heartfelt conversation set the perfect tone for The Muppets and what was to come on their adventure to save their history.

Not only did the movie live up to the expectations set by the undying ‘80s television show, but it also surpassed those of this generation’s film viewers. The Muppets cleverly brought back these characters by being a film about exactly that. It is refreshing for a film like this to stay away from becoming another tired remake and instead become a continuation of the longrunning Muppets story. The attempt to recreate something loved has been a complete success and each character, cameo and Muppet alike, are applauded for their efforts. A movie devoted to the importance of love, childhood, individuality and humor could not have been better.

QuickFlick Happy Feet Two

hose crazy dancing penguins are at it again in Happy Feet Two, exhibiting their endless talents and choreographing skills with as much pride and intensity as the first movie. With the voices of stars such as Elijah Wood, Pink, Robin Williams, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon, I was anticipating an awesome collection of characters and an engrossing plot. However, I was disappointed to find only chaos in the movie, with no true main character or clear plot direction.

Mumble (Wood) a.k.a. “Happy Feet,” is now a father to a young penguin named Erik (Ava Acres). He and his wife Gloria

(Pink) struggle to parent their rebellious son, who can’t help but feel a little lost and displaced in the penguin community.

Erik cannot acquire the same rhythm that comes so naturally to his father and the rest of the crowd. The movie opens with the whole penguin populous dancing and singing, and you can’t help but notice that Erik feels a little misplaced and awkward.

Mumble tries to help him get a better feel for his dancing feet, but Erik gets so terribly embarrassed that he pees himself; it is an incredibly awkward scene. Meanwhile, Ramon (Robin Williams) has an entirely different story going on. In his pursuit of looking for a wife, he gets his penguin companions very lost. And on top of all of this,

there is another penguin community nearby that is ruled by a flying penguin named Sven (Hank Azaria) who helps provide the stranded penguins with food. And on top of even this, the story of two adventuring krill, played by Pitt and Damon, is intertwined within the penguins’ stories. If you think this is confusing to read, I assure you, it as just as confusing to watch.

The overall disunity of the movie is what truly got me. There seemed to just be a bunch of scenes connected by songs and dance without much of a plot for the audience to hang on to. There were some funny scenes, but I was mostly disappointed by what had at first seemed to be a very promising animated comedy.

ym Class Heroes has returned to their roots with their latest album, The Papercut Chronicles II. Fans of the band will recognize the album title resembles their 2003 debut album. This is the first album released by Gym Class Heroes since 2008, when the band went on a mini-hiatus. In this album, the band has returned to their alternative hip-hop and rap roots with a less overproduced sound and simplistic musical approach.

Papercut Chronicles II consists of follow-up songs such as “Za Intro” and “Kid Nothing And The Never-Ending Naked Nightmare,” featured on the first Papercut Chronicles. The remaining songs also sound like the old Gym Class Heroes, with simple background melodies and frontman Travis McCoy rapping in the foreground with honesty and clarity. About half of the songs contain some sort of singing collaboration, but not from many big names, as one might expect. In fact, the only track that would be an obvious commercial hit is the single “Stereo Hearts,” which features Adam Levine of Maroon 5. The rest differ from their past albums, which have been produced by notably “hit-making” producers. The album relaxes and slows down from Gym Class Heroes’ earlier frantic poppunk singles, most likely a product of the band coming back together after years of solo side projects. Gym Class Heroes has come full circle, making an album not for the masses or critical acclaim, but for themselves.

elawolf, a southern rapper recently signed to Shady Records, is bringing his unique style to the rap scene in his debut album Radioactive. After mishaps with previous record labels, Yelawolf goes back to the roots of his original mix tapes with songs like “Get Away” and “Hard White.” In “Get Away,” he raps too quickly to fully understand what he is saying, but that is what gives Yelawolf his charm. “Hard White,” featuring Lil Wayne, has a basement or backroom feel through the use of a producer’s home for a recording studio. Instead of typical rap songs about women and riches, Yelawolf talks about his Alabama home life in the song “Let it Roll,” with the lyrics “Big trucks in the yard, big bucks on the wall, country folks all around.” Still managing to make catchy tunes, the appeal of Yelawolf is his ability to make people feel nostalgia for their hometowns, even if they are not from the south.

Though Yelawolf brings a unique southern style to the rap game, his album falls short of its underground predecessor, leaving hopeful fans somewhat down in the dumps. Radioactive is an album that can be easily skipped without a thought.

“This year, we are expecting snow,” Pavey said. “I think that the atmosphere will be very festive with carolers and Santa.”

Mayor Presler said the Winter Wonderland Celebration is an important opportunity for community members to celebrate the joy of the holiday season and light the streets of Flagstaff in unison.

“Light always overcomes darkness,” Presler said. “We are one community and gathering together at the holidays is an important community time.”

The long-celebrated traditional event will feature familiar holiday tunes and chilly bundled-up faces lit by the magic of an array of lights.

Pavey said the display typically stays up through January, allowing the pretty lights to linger a little bit longer and cheer

the streets of Flagstaff through the cold, dark winter.

“As for what colors the lights will be,” Pavey said, “People will need to come down to see for themselves.”

Another recent lighting celebration took place this past Saturday. Little America Hotel held their annual lights ceremony in which they hang over one million lights around their property.

Jenna Byerly, a front desk agent for the Little America Hotel, said the event was packed and there were different activities including ornament decorations, animals on display, ice sculpting and choirs singing holiday tunes.

“We had Santa come at night,” Byerly said. “He came with a marching band and the kids got to sit on Santa’s lap. I loved the carolers and the choir that sang in the lobby — it was very festive.”

buddy of mine, Kirk Edwards, showed me a few chords. I guess three years later [I was] just feverishly practicing and listening to the radio and putting songs together [and] my first gig was three later when I was 16.

LJ: How and why did you originally become interested in utilizing phrase looping in your live performances?

KW: I think for obvious reasons. There was many, many hours of me playing solo with just a microphone and guitar, and I wanted different avenues to go down musically without being able to afford humans and without wanting to have a sequencer where I press a button and the whole band comes in, I didn’t want to go that route either. I kind of wanted to create different musical avenues for myself without anything being prerecorded and create it right there. The short answer is to make it more interesting for myself.

LJ: What is your favorite part about playing a live show?

KW: Wow, there are many favorite parts.

The release that I need of all this music inside that needs to come out, that’s a fun thing for me. Another thing is the circular energy that happens; it’s all about adrenaline really; the audience getting into me, me absorbing it and giving it back in this circular thing. It sounds really bizarre, but that is where it really gets happening and there is a real connection with the audience.

LJ: Have you been touring heavily over the last few years?

KW: The past couple of years I’ve developed that weekend warrior mentality, staying at home during the week with my kids, and leaving Thursday-Sunday, and it has become kind of a routine. I think people around here are used to me disappearing during the weekend.

LJ: Tell me about your upcoming album, Bass. How long did the summer recording sessions take? What made you decide to play exclusively bass through the entire album?

KL: It kinda started with my infatuation with Jaco Pastorius a couple years back. The bass has been around on my stage for the past 10 years [and] once I started looping, it was easy to incorporate the bass. And once I incorporated the bass, it seemed that was when things really started to change, as far as people coming to shows and whatnot. As far as the new record goes, it features Jay Starling on the keys and Mark D on the drums. It’s very spacious, open-air reggae dub funk and it’s really a blast for me to be able to direct and lead a band just by playing bass. There is so much power behind it as opposed to the acoustic

guitar [and] when I make a move or make a decision it’s felt; it’s there; it’s really a lot of fun.

LJ: You’ve had the opportunity to tour with many bands, including The String Cheese Incident and Rat Dog to name a few.

Is there one group that you particularly enjoyed playing with?

KW: I love it all; there’s a camaraderie on the road when you’re traveling with other bands, especially when you’re traveling with your own band. I’ve done many tours with people I’ve handpicked to be with, hang out with. It’s a beautiful thing; there is no real one group of folks. I do love collaborating and being with other people, and not being solo all the time. The solo thing is definitely my day job and what I’m known for, but I do love to collaborate with other folks.

LJ: You’ve had the privilege of playing shows alongside Grateful Dead alumni Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreuztmann.

What has it been like interacting and jamming with such legendary musicians?

KW: There’s one main word to describe that and that would be surreal. My experience with the band [was] from 1987 until 1999. I was on the tour and Phil Lesh was also on the tour. My experience with the band was I was always on the hill in the back or behind stage.

Next thing you know, I’m actually standing next to these people playing music, and it’s weird man. The first couple times it was very surreal; I was very nervous [but] the more I played with them, obviously the more comfortable I got. It took time for a while to separate them from my heroes and just human beings, it took a while, but it’s all good now.

LJ: When you’re not jamming or writing music, what do you do for fun? Do you have any real downtime?

KW: I play a lot of crazy eights with my daughter, and we also have gotten into bicycles: we ride a lot of bicycles. My son, he likes to run around and wrestle, so I like to wrestle with him. We like to go down and hang swings on tree branches down by the river. We like to swing on tree branches; we like to put on big tall boots and go tromping through the woods, all kinds of fun stuff to do.

LJ: What should members of the Flagstaff community expect from your upcoming show at the Orpheum?

KW: They can expect solo acoustic music that’s grounded in singer-songwriter, alternative folk music, and also they can expect to see that drift right to the edge of organic electronica. They might hear some things that they have heard before, but done possibly a different way, and hopefully there’ll be a bunch of young, happy and hairy people bumping into each other and smiling.
