Aug. 18

At 12:26 a.m., a Northern Arizona University Police Department (NAUPD) officer reported being out with a subject who was sleeping on the grass near the Blome building.

The Flagstaff Fire Department (FFD) and Guardian Medical Transport (GMT) responded to the scene. The subject was checked and cleared by medics and given a field interrogation by NAUPD. Following the interrogation, the subject was escorted to a hotel.

At 12:25 p.m., staff of Hilltop Townhouses reported the theft of letters from their sign. The theft occurred at approximately 1:45 a.m. on the same date. This was not the first incident regarding the signage. A previous theft had rendered the name of Hilltop Townhomes to Ill Townhomes.

The case remains open pending further investigation.

At 11:31 p.m., a resident of SAC Family housing called to report a female subject was refusing to leave her room.

Responding officers found, upon arrival and subsequent investigation, that the resident had been assaulted.

The resident refused medical treatment.

The suspect was not looked at this time and the case remains open pending investigation.

Aug. 17

At 9:42 a.m., an NAUPD

officer reported seeing a subject in a vehicle attempting to make contact with several females around San Francisco and McConnell Drive.

While the activity seemed suspicious, there was not enough reasonable suspicion to warrant a traffic stop.

At 11:55 a.m., an NAUPD officer was flagged down at 101 E. Butler.

A subject was discovered vomiting blood but refused treatment and the subject, according to the report, went on his way.

Aug. 16

At 5:47 p.m., staff of Tinsley Hall called to report the suspect in a harassment investigation had turned up at the residence hall.

The investigation was in response to a posting on the Internet of a memorial page.

The memorial stated that the Tinsley resident had passed away on the thirty-first of July of this year.

The sister of the resident had contacted NAUPD after seeing the post and had requested a welfare check of the subject. The resident was alive and well. After reviewing the site the resident preferred charges against the poster.

The suspect was arrested and booked into the Coconino County Detention Facility (CCDF) on charges of assault and threatening and intimidating

Aug. 13

At 4:38 p.m., a call was received by NAUPD reporting a subject outside

of the Cline Library asking people for money.

The subject was cited and released by officers for trespass.

At 11:13 p.m., an NAUPD officer stopped a person riding a bicycle at the intersection of Pine Knoll and San Francisco for failing to obey the stop sign.

The cyclist was issued a warning for the failure to come to a stop and advised about the need for a headlight.

Aug. 12

At 2:06 a.m., an NAUPD officer initiated a stop of a cyclists at the intersection of Knoles Drive and Riordan.

The cyclist was issued a warning for failing to have a headlight and a tail light.

The subject was given a ride to their residence.

Aug. 7

At 3:05 a.m., an NAUPD officer reported seeing a person running with a chair in the vicinity of S. Milton Road and Saunders Drive.

After a short foot pursuit the subject was caught and arrested. The chair was discovered to have been taken from Quizno’s. The subject was booked into the CCDF on a charge of theft.

FPD rape suspect arrested

A 22-year-old man was arrested Thursday in alleged connection to a series of four sexual assaults that began in January. Gregory Woody Jr. was arrested by the Flagstaff Police Department after an extensive investigation that involved regional and national investigative agencies, including the FBI and Arizona Department of Public Safety.

According to the FPD, three of the instances have been connected to Woody through forensic DNA evidence. The fourth and most recent assault did not produce any forensic evidence to help identify a suspect, Flagstaff Police Chief Kevin Treadway said in a press conference Thursday.

“Fortunately, stranger-on-stranger assault is not common (in Flagstaff)” Treadway told said, “Our citizens should be concerned, their police department was very concerned. I’m sure there’s a collective sigh of relief in Flagstaff.”

The investigation involved the cooperation of several agencies, as well as amped-up policing in the downtown area by Flagstaff officers. Every night, FPD has sent at least six officers, sometimes more, to patrol downtown and to investigate as undercover officers.

An undercover officer was what brought in the suspect.

One evening at the downtown bars in Flagstaff, two undercover officers noticed Woody allegedly acting suspiciously. According to the officers and FPD, he was watching people, but not ordering drinks or food. Later in the evening, they

once again observed Woody peeking through a window into a different bar downtown.

One of the officers approached him and said “Hi,” at which point Woody began to walk with her, FPD Gregory Woody Jr. says. Woody led the officer to a secluded area, where he allegedly made several advances on the officer, who, according to FPD, noticed at that time that Woody had a vehicle that matched the description of the vehicles in the other investigations.

Police later approached him at his home identified by his vehicle’s license plate on Kofa Drive and attained a DNA sample voluntarily. The DNA sample was tested, and FPD said the results confirmed that he had been involved in at least three of the assaults stemming from January.

As for the most recent attack, which occurred on Aug. 8, Treadway said hat FPD will ensure that, should the cases not be connected, the perpetrator will be caught.

“We’ll uncover every stone there,” Treadway said. “We’ll have to keep working with that victim.”

FPD has reached out to police departments in Colorado and Montana, where a federal database of unsolved rape cases shows open cases similar to the rapes in Flagstaff.

Cody convicted in student’s death

Traveling at an estimated speed of 60 miles per hour, the vehicle driven by Kelsey Lou Cody struck and killed then Northern Arizona University senior Jordan Mahoney. The impact hurled Mahoney 200 feet, knocking off one of her shoes and a sock. The bicycle was totaled.

The incident occurred on Sept. 9, 2012, barely a month into the fall semester.

Mahoney, an English and psychology major, would have graduated from NAU in May 2013. She had hopes of going into medical research.

Cody, who had a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit, pled guilty in June to a single count of second degree murder, at which time she was returned to custody pending her upcoming sentencing last Wednesday. She had been free on bail prior to that.

Cody faced a sentence of a minimum 10 years and a maximum of 25 years. Her family and defense team pled and argued for the minimum term, citing Cody’s remorse and good Kelsey Lou Cody character, the drunk driving incident notwithstanding.

The prosecution did not speak out for the maximum sentence, arguing instead for a term of 21 years in prison.

Mahoney’s family spoke of the devastation the death of their daughter had caused them.

Cody will be 41 years old when her prison term is completed.

Mahoney was 22 at the time of her death.

Sprouts set to offer healthy alternative to students, community

ithout food, a college student is sluggish, grumpy, and unable to move the mouse to click to the next episode on Netflix. An unfed college student is a zombie and until they eat, they cannot function properly. Unfortunately, food can be expensive, and Ramen is cheap. But who wants to live off Ramen for the rest of their lives? There is an alternative. Sprouts, a store whose tagline is: healthy living for less.

This organic food store is opening in the same plaza as Target and Bookman’s in the lot where Hastings was.“There was a vacant space near NAU campus, the town has a great culture, and we have been well-received in other college towns. Sprouts is a sensible option for healthy eating,” said Lauren Rosenblum the Sprouts communication manager. Raven Larson, an astrophysicist major and freshman, is excited to have Sprouts in the area as she starts school this year. “I love the aromatherapy oils, teas, organic dark chocolates, and the vitamins,” said Larson. “Plus, humus and organic fruits and veggies are better for the earth and for the body.”

College budgets can be tight, certainly, but Rosenblum doesn’t just

believe that only college students will benefit from Sprouts, low prices.

“My family shops at Sprouts: uncles, brothers, grandparents... my sister shopped at a Sprouts in Tucson as a college student. Anyone can shop there. Age, sex, or demographics don’t come into the picture,” she said. Flagstaff natives are talking about Sprouts as well.

Although Flagstaff definitely has its share of health-centered stores, they all have their different prices and purposes. Stephanie Nguyen, who works at Dominos, said she is definitely interested in trying a store with more organic leanings. Nguyen said. “I think a Sprouts coming in would be a great competitor for New Frontiers.

If the price equals the quality, then I could definitely see myself shopping in [Sprouts].”If there is one thing Flagstaff has besides the wonderful weather- it is a sense of community and family. Shawn Larsen, manager of the new store, enjoys the close-knit nature of the staff and their relationship with the customers.

“We have a motto that says a customer cannot leave unhappy.

We try to say yes as much as possible. Ultimately, I am the only one

who can say no, but if it makes it all the way up to me, I’ll probably say yes,” he said. “Our staff is very close and loves to have fun too.”

Sprout’s unveiling is going to be quite the party. The day of the grand opening, August 28 at 7 a.m., has some special events going on. The first 200 paying shoppers get a free shopping bag, and every 15 customers at the registers get a coupon book. The building that now houses Sprouts is open and spacious allowing for a popsicle peddler to ride around selling, you guessed it — popsicles. Not to mention that even after the store is opened, promotions and deals will continue. There will be periods of great savings in specific areas of the store like Frozen Frenzy.

They even have lectures from nutritionists in the vitamin section so that customers can learn as much as they can while saving money.

All in all, Sprouts strives to be community friendly. As far as the incoming students, Larsen the store manager is very excited for their patronage.

Construction of new aquatic center to begin in April 2014

ike something out of the imagination of Stephen King is the story of the degradation of the Wall Aquatic Center (WAC), with its rumored sinking foundation.

It is said, while the center was being built, the daughter of the general contractor was raped and murdered here in Flagstaff. It is for this reason, though details are quite unspecific, the building is slowly sinking into the ground.

The building was dedicated to the “Natatorium” in 1981.

While the name may be unfamiliar, it comes from the Latin and designates any building housing a pool. Its cost at the time of construction was $4.4 million. The center was rededicated on May 30, 1996 the Wall Aquatic Center after Douglas J. Wall, a Flagstaff attorney. Wall, a former president and member of the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR), is described on the plaque at the entrance of the center as “A distinguished benefactor and lifelong supporter of Northern Arizona University.”

The WAC, rumors of a sinking foundation entirely notwithstanding, is set to be replaced.When it was first built, the WAC was hailed as the latest in design and engineering as noted in a framed piece at the top of the stairs of the building. It is now a thirty-two year old building with the problems attendant.

Water splashed from the pool has for some time begun to seep through the concrete, as concrete is a lightly porous material.

This has begun to corrode the structural rebar reinforcement.

The water has also begun to seep into the tunnel that lies beneath the decking.

Furthermore, while the air-handling units installed in 1981 were then state of the art, they, like all mechanical devices, have begun to wear into inefficiency as would any thirty-two year old machinery.

Some students may have noticed the pool was drained earlier this year. This was done so the lights above the pool could be replaced. The draining was necessary because the decking of the pool could not withstand the weight of the lifts needed to reach these lights. Therefore, the lifts had to operate on the dry pool floor. In the first number of years the center was open — a different process for reaching these lights was employed which involved pontoon boats with scaffolding mounted on them. It was eventually determined that the pontoon boat tactic proved to be an unsafe practice.

While seemingly wasteful, the reason these lights were replaced in a building that is going to be demolished is because the old center will remain open while the new center is being built. This is to ensure that all the activities the center hosts can

continue uninterrupted.

The new center will be built on the WAC field adjacent to the aquatic center. The construction currently in progress behind Sechrist Hall on San Francisco will replace the previous field.

When the new center is completed the old WAC will be torn down and tennis courts will be constructed.

Construction will begin in April or May of next year.

In other construction news: the new addition to the Hot Spot will have opened the day after this paper goes to press. An architect for the firm who designed the addition was going over the punch list this Tuesday. 250 new seats have been added to the eatery.

Also, the new science building under construction just east of the Communication building will take approximately 22 months to complete. Students may locate this construction site from many parts of campus because of the tower crane on site.

With that mention comes a warning. While this warning comes without full verification, word has reached The Lumberjack that students who see this tower as a source of adventure and daring.

Anyone attempting to climb it may well find themselves facing a felony charge though the university and the contractor are taking steps to hinder any efforts to climb it up with barbed wire fencing around the tower.

NAU Greek Life encourages leadership, service, scholarship

With the school year starting up and students returning to campus, students are looking for clubs and activities to join.

NAU offers a wide variety of clubs and club sports to all of its students. One of the biggest organizations on campus is Greek Life.

Becca Richardson, an active member of Greek Life always felt welcomed and respected by everyone in Greek Life, which was one of the any factors that contributed to her joining Greek Life.

“I wanted to join Greek Life because I always thought of sororities as a home away from home because they made me feel welcomed and they helped me gain new friends,” Richardson said.

Greek Life includes both sororities and fraternities and each chapter has set values that show how dedicated they are to themselves and the organization. While each chapter has their own set of values, some shared values include leadership, service, scholarships and social activities.

Leadership is important to the organization, as every sorority and fraternity are based on it. Greek Life prides itself on promoting self-confidence and leadership through every member and every student on campus.

“It wasn’t until I went through recruitment that I had witnessed a change in everyone around me; a good change and I knew that I wanted to join a sorority because I wanted to succeed like the girls around me had.” Richardson said.

Leadership excels through group and individual goals that show students that you can achieve anything you set your mind to. Members of Greek Life attend conferences, manage budgets for events, interact with faculty and staff and give direction and help to any student who may need it.

Kevin Gemoets, Assistant Director of Greek Life, is always thrilled to see how active and involved everyone in Greek Life is.

“We consider all of our Greek students to be leaders of cam-

pus because they’ve taken the step to join an organization that will help them with their leadership skills to becoming a better person.”

Service allows members of Greek Life to give back their community and philanthropy that each chapter of Greek Life supports. Some of the charities include cleaning up the streets and highways, blood drives, and philanthropy events.

Gemoets expanded on the community service aspect of Greek Life by saying, “On average we do about fifteen thousand hours of community service each year, and then our chapters raise and donate over fifty thousand dollars each year to various national and local philanthropies.”

Each chapter has a set philanthropy or organization that they donate money to each year, and with the philanthropy events that each chapter puts together, they are able to raise money to give back to their local and national philanthropy.

Scholarship is enforced Greek Life to show how grades and school are important in their values. Every student in Greek Life follows a formal scholarship program that helps each student reach their goals and maintain excellent grades.

The last value in Greek Life is a social obligation. Each chapter in Greek Life provides activities that bring everyone in Greek Life together and, also, connect with their peers.

“Greek Life is working hard to open up events to students all around campus, we want students to come and get to know Greek Life more.” Richardson said.

Recruitment begins the first week of school, Thursday, August 29. Recruitment allows every student considering going Greek to get to know each sorority or fraternity and let them consider which chapter they feel is best fit for them.

During recruitment, there are many events that one must attend to get to know your Greek Life chapter better. There are three events within recruitment, Interfraternity Council Rush (IFC), College Panhellenic Council Recruitment (CPC), and United Greek Council Recruitment (UGC).

IFC takes place September 8-14 and begins with IFC Rushfest Sunday, September 8 from 3-6 pm at the Observatory Field.

Each IFC chapter has their own schedule for Rush Week.

Formal CPC Recruitment takes place Aug. 29- Sept. 2. Every student who would like to participate in the formal CPC Recruitment must sign up by Wednesday, August 28 at 5 p.m.. All of the events that are happening through Recruitment week are on the CPC Recruitment website.

UGC Recruitment takes place the week of Sept. 9-14. The first UGC Showcase is Monday, September 9 at the University Union from 5:30-7:30 pm. Each organization has its own schedule of events. More information about these events are available at the UGC Showcase, or you can email the chapter presidents to find out more about the schedule of events.

NAU seeks diversity within Greek life with DEA

he long, drawn-out process is coming to an end for Becca Bohanon and Dena Lane-Bonds and they could not be more excited because it will only be the beginning. The running around, planning and decision making is all paying off. Come this fall semester, they will be the founders of an entirely new organization.

Northern Arizona University will officially be welcoming DEA, also known as Daleph He Aleph, a cultural sorority to campus Bohanon is a first-year graduate student at Northern Arizona University (NAU) working toward a degree in educational psychology. LaneBonds, also a first year graduate student majoring in educational psychology with an emphasis on counseling and student affairs.

These women share more than their area

of study in common: they both have seen a need to nourish the African-American community on this campus and want to be the ones to start reconnecting it.

“Here, at NAU, there has been this break in creating bonds amongst students of color and I feel like it’s our responsibility and the responsibility of other students to follow to kind of recreate that bond and reconnect,” Lane-Bonds said.

The lack of support in the African-American community sparked an idea between the two and they began making plans from late October to early November. Their first thoughts were to bring an already established African American sorority to the campus, from the Divine Nine.

The Divine Nine is a collaborative organization of nine historically African American, international Greek-lettered fraternities and sororities. The process dealing

with the Divine Nine was much more than Bohanon and Lane-Bonds wanted to tackle.

“Becca and I wanted to bring two different sororities to the campus,” Lane-Bonds said.

The process with bringing a Divine Nine Sorority or Fraternity to a campus calls for one of those actual members being able to come to the campus quite frequently.

“The closest institution that has a grad chapter for someone that may be able to come up here and help us establish that here is in Phoenix and we were like, ‘Wow, that’s either us driving up and down the highway for two hours every week or that person,” Lane-Bonds said. “Considering we’re grad students, time was not gonna permit.”

The hopes of bringing a Divine Nine chapter to the NAU campus diminished, so Bohanon and Lane-Bonds decided to set their sights elsewhere.

After running their ideas by Valeria Chase,

coordinator in the Inclusion and Multicultural Services Center, another idea was born. Chase is an adviser for the multicultural sorority on campus, GAO, which stands for Gamma Alpha Omega. Bohanon and Lane-Bonds said Chase encouraged them to create their own sorority completely from scratch. This way they had freedom in their vision being able to make everything they want in a sorority come to life.

With that the ladies were off, ready to create and bring their organization to surface.

Excitement stirred up between the two girls: colors, letters, a mission and most importantly the name had to be created.

“Our hope is that within the next three to five years, we will have five to ten chapters. I think that’s a lofty goal but possible because of the fact this targets women of color on predominantly white campuses,” Bohanon said.

Oncore Skate and Snow: a store Flagstaff deserves

ith its reputation for sustaining a “small town” environment, Flagstaff has always been a place where local businesses have the potential to prosper. While some establishments may never take off, one local business has soared over its other local competitors.

Oncore: Skate and Snow is proving to be a serious component in Flagstaff ’s skate community. With its distinctive selection, relaxed environment, and impeccable customer service, Oncore is the place to go when looking for the latest and greatest in skate retail.

First showing up on Flagstaff ’s radar two years prior, Oncore: Skate and Snow, was a dream seven years in the making to owners Rich Phillips and Dave Hilton.

The two met while working together at Valley Ride Shop, a Phoenix skate shop.

“I’ve been working a total of eighteen years in the business,” Phillips said. “I started working as a sales kid and within a year I was managing. I then got the opportunity to start buying for the store, which led to me getting hired at Valley Ride.”

When Hilton later joined the crew, the two became partners in running the day-to-day operations. After a while, the early dream that is now Oncore was born.

“The last couple years working together at Valley Ride, we

ended up throwing the idea around,” Phillips stated.

Now after two years of being open, Oncore has gone from vision to reality­— offering Flagstaff ’s skate and snowboard community a more distinctive purchasing scene.

At first glance, the store greets you with a welcome homegrown atmosphere. Specific areas are devoted to diverse products, making it easy for one to find a wide range of options when searching for particular merchandise.

“We try to offer unique brands that really support and have a big drive within the industry today. Everything we sell gives back to skateboarding or snowboarding in one way or another. That’s a huge part of what we look for when choosing our product,” Phillips said.

It’s not hard to find uniqueness within the store. In fact, Oncore is the only store in Flagstaff that offers some of today’s upcoming and hottest products and brands within the skate and snowboarding industry.

“I keep saying it’s nice that we are not held to have to go mainstream with our product choices. We are allowed to try out the new stuff, the different stuff and the low key stuff,” Hilton stated.

“We also want to offer products that have versatility. When we test stuff, when we look at what we buy for the store, the products definitely have to have the aspect of versatility to it,” Phillips continued.

The products offered are not all that sets Oncore apart from its local competitors. Phillips and Hilton have created a store that also offers the perfect shopping environment. With their immaculate knowledge of merchandise, and their exceptional customer service, Oncore is a prime example of what a shopper’s paradise is.

“We try to offer an environment where a customer can come in here, whether they buy something or not and walk away feeling good. We just enjoy what we do, we enjoy talking about the product, and sometimes we can get a little nerdy, but its rad,” Phillips said. “That’s one thing I’m so stoked about is that all of our employees have advanced knowledge in everything we do.”

Oncore effortlessly maintains its exceptional atmosphere.

One can easily come in and “nerd out” or share their love for the skate and snowboard sports. Their level of passion is unmatched in the Flagstaff community.

“For us it feels very good to chat with people about the last time they rode, and whether they buy something or not, or just look around, we love to know that they feel good after stopping by.

We just want to be the shop that Flagstaff deserves.” Hilton said.

Roommate survival guide: the first year of dorm living

iving in a dorm has its pros and cons, and if it’s your freshman year, chances are you’re living with a randomly selected roommate. This person can become your best friend, and even if they don’t become your best friend, they’re still someone you’re going to remember 50 years from now. That being said, sharing a single room with someone in such close quarters is guaranteed to eventually lead to some conflict—if said conflict escalates without resolution, it’s going to end up in an uncomfortable, even miserable living situation.

So here are a few tips on how to handle living with a difficult roommate, or simply resolving the inevitable issues that occur throughout the year.

Nobody appreciates —or takes seriously— passive aggressive sticky notes.

It doesn’t help the situation at all. Nobody is going to read that, then think “Oh my roommate has a point!” Moreover, they sound bratty and demonstrate avoidance behavior that’s only going to make the note-poster an easier target for the undesirable behavior. Instead, address the issues with something like, “Hey, do you think you can start picking up your clothes off the floor?” It opens up room for constructive dialogue and is approximately a million times more mature. No sticky note, no matter how polite it may seem, it ever as nice as it may seem.

Try to remember that you’re no gem.

Everyone has flaws, and that includes you. If you keep this mind when you get frustrated over things your roommate is doing, things will go a lot smoother. Think of all the things you might do that are irritating that perhaps they’ve chosen to overlook. Everyone has room for self improvement, and reminding yourself of this can only lead to having more patience.

Always keep your cool.

Even if they’re not. Be calm, in spite of them, and it will pay off. It’ll help you remember where your values are, and will help make you into a more tolerant person. Nobody likes to

hear this, but it’s the truth: take the high road. If you remain a kind and considerate roommate, they’re more likely to do the same, and circumstances are far more likely to improve.

Earphones go a long way.

Thanks in advance.

Maintain interpersonal communication.

Misunderstandings happen, and when they do, it is easy to become sensitive to things they may be clueless about— and vice versa. So don’t be afraid to ask something like, “is there anything I can do to improve our living situation?” Don’t be vague about it. When there is tension and awkwardness in the place you sleep, it’s difficult to overlook and can really make an impact on your mental state. In college, everyone already has more than enough on their plate, that it’s better for everyone if everyone treats each other kindly. And chances are, your roommate isn’t psychic.

Don’t be afraid of the roommate contract.

It was made for a reason, so utilize it, and avoid future conflicts altogether.

Curtains.

Putting up curtains in the dorm doesn’t need to indicate a sign of resentment or being closed off. However, the privacy provided by them can actually help you grow, but it can help alleviate some of the stress of always being around your roommate right from the getgo. It doesn’t mean you don’t love or care for each other, but everyone needs their own space, and it’s a little way of accomplishing such a thing.

So much of living with a new roommate means finding a balance between their needs and yours, so the conclusion to all of this can be summed up in one simple word: communication. It’s cliché but it really is the key to every situation you could possibly face. Odds are, you and your roommate will get along really well. But that doesn’t mean unanticipated problems won’t occur, and you should be prepared to deal with them.

Peak’s Audio providing the sound for local events

f you’ve lived in Flagstaff, Peak s Audio has been quietly entertaining you for years.

The company, which was founded

by NAU alumnus Jason Moeller, spearheads community — favored events like the Green Room’s weekly Get Down along with other events like the weekly summertime movie on the square in downtown Flagstaff.

They even put together a last — ­ minute benefit concert that sold out in five hours to raise money for the families of the 19 hotshot firefighters who were caught in a horrific, extremely hot wildfirefire in June.

Putting together events with such significance, according to cocoordinator at Peaks Audio and fellow NAU alumnus Joe Spitzer, is extremely rewarding.

“It blew up into a huge production,” Spitzer said, “but it was really rewarding because we all went down there, pretty much worked for free… and, to raise that much money in one night for the families was amazing.”

The benefit concert raised over half a million dollars for the families, and was organized after a phone call from country singer Dierks Bentley indicating he was interested in having a benefit concert.

Two weeks and a lot of work from Peaks Audio later, the amphitheater packed in a sold out benefit concert.

Quick work and long hours are nothing new for the workers at Peaks Audio, though.

The company organizes more than 360 events a year including events at bars and bigger concerts at the Pepsi Amphitheater.

In July, Spitzer averaged two twenty one hour shifts each week in addition to

the other work throughout the week. ““It’s very busy, that’s for sure,” Spitzer said. “Especially in the summer time. In the summer we normally have anywhere from three to six jobs happening in one day.”

In addition to events like Get Down and the movies on the square, Peaks Audio has collaborated with NAU entities like Ardrey Auditorium on campus and Sun Entertainment.

For the Macklemore show last year they designed the lighting components of the show.

Moeller, the founder of the company, recently graduated from NAU in December.

He got his start working with audio at the age of 15 when he helped with his church’s audio system.

Within the next several years he had taken his talent and started the company.

“We’re an audio production company… I’m sure that sounds a little bit vague but what we do is produce and provide equipment for large concerts and events,” Moeller said. “I guess the end product is producing events.”

This level headed approach and persistence in the field, along with connections made over a nearly decade long career in Flagstaff audio work, have allowed Peaks Audio to excel.

“A large part of our success is that Jason never says no,” Spitzer said of Moeller on their work ethic. “It’s kind of a unique challenge to agree with everything and then try to make it work later. I think that’s a key ingredient in building our success. We always figure out how to make it work and it leads to so many other things… you never know who you’re going to meet or who’s in the Jason Moeller and Joe Spitzer of Peaks Audio Production pose for a photo at the Pepsi crowd.”

NAU striving to accommodate growing freshman class

With the increase in enrollment, the school faces impact in freshmen dorms.

NAU is expecting approximately 4,600 new freshmen this school year.

Of those enrolled, NAU Residence Life is preparing for 4,100 freshmen to move in on August 24. NAU recommends freshmen live on campus, but with the growing number of students each year, it appears they face a challenge.

NAU houses between 90 and 93 percent of incoming freshmen every year. Due to different strategies Residence Life has come up with, the percentage is expected to remain the same this year.

Alicia Stewart Voytek, associate director of administrative services housing and residence life said, “We implemented several strategies to accommodate the increase.”

Tinsley Hall has become a full freshmen-only dorm.

Residence Life has offered triple rooms in both Sechrist and McConnell Hall.

“We continue to have a high demand for discounted triples,” Voytek said. “Students save $1,000 off their academic year rent.”

Residence life has converted exercise and study

rooms into bedrooms that will house multiple students.

Residence Assistants (RA) will also share rooms with students temporarily. These temporary options are called “Expanded Occupancy” and throughout the first semester, many rooms become available.

“There’s temporary housing ... in Mountain View Hall until new Greek members are recruited from other residence halls,” Voytek said.

The available housing space has made living oncampus competitive. Halls such as Pine Ridge and McKay Village have changed their credit policy, allowing more students to be eligible to reside there. Previosuly, only students with a minimum of 90 credits were allowed to live in Pine Ridge and McKay Village, but the credit limit was recently changed to 30 credits to accomodate the growing population. The change in credits effects upperclassmen interested in living on campus Tom Bauer, the director of the NAU Office of Public Affairs, said the measures were temporary.

“We have made accommodations for this fall," Bauer said. "They're not necessarily ideal for some, but we are taking care of most people.”

This year’s 4,100 freshmen living on campus is an increase from last year's 3,700 students.

The deadline for housing applications closed on June

14 and Residence Life was able to accommodate those that applied on time. Any late applications were denied oncampus housing.

“The majority of students applied for housing are living on campus,” Voytek said. “After June 14th, we assisted students with locating off-campus options.”

Due to the shortage in on-campus housing there is a high demand in local complexes. This is the first year the city of Flagstaff has not built a new form of housing to meet the growing demand. Last fall, The Grove opened on Franklin Ave. to meet their growing need the complex desinged and built a set of townhomes anticipated to be completed by late August. But these new accomediation will not assist in combating the freshman housing issue as all spaces were accounted for by the end of the spring semester.

Due to the Arizona Board of Regions (ABOR) goal of 25,000 students by 2020, NAU is planning on building additional housing on south campus.

“The new housing we are planning will alleviate some of the problems we are facing,” Bauer said.

The building of a new housing hall will have to get approved by the legislature prior; the university is making structural plans in helping their long-term 2020 goal.

Editorial&Opinion ASU’s tobacco road closed indefinitely: a feeble attempt to show health conscientiousness

M

uch to the chagrin of regular Sun Devil lung defilers, the pompous dogooders at the helm of ASU were finally able to implement their tobacco-free policy after around two years of heated campaigning.

Effective Aug. 1, the ban shuns and prohibits the act of smoking tobacco, as well as the alternative nicotine fix brought on by such TOM smokeless alternaBLANTON tives as dip. The ban is effective throughout ASU’s main Tempe campus and all other valley campuses, as well as in privately owned vehicles within university owned parking lots and property leased by the school.

According to the American Nonsmokers’ Rights Foundation, Maricopa County’s most prolific university is following in the footsteps of more than a thousand other universities under Uncle Sam’s watchful eye. Knowing the preceding number, one has to ask themselves whether ASU is simply doing this to fit in with the apparent changing times. It seems as though Michael M. Crow is simply attempting to garner a spot at the cool-kid, smoke-free table, which has been rapidly growing in recent years. The university’s website claims ASU has only become “committed to supporting a culture of health for students, faculty, staff and visitors.”

As opposed to when they weren’t committed to the health of their subordinates?

Let’s face it; it doesn’t take Stephen Hawking’s IQ to see past their feeble façade of false altruism. For starters, ASU’s website states “smoking in public places produces secondhand smoke, which has been scientifically proven to harm others.”

There’s no debating that reasoning, especially since they’re wielding the mighty sword of science. Why, then, does the ban include the eradication of smokeless tobacco use? Again pulling from the university’s website, this is because “alternative tobacco products . . . have been found to be detrimental to health.” It’s common knowledge oral cancer is at a higher risk when regularly partaking in smokeless tobacco products.

Unlike smoking, a hefty lip only affects the health of the user, which is a personal choice, and one that isn’t potentially life-shortening to the

health of others. What we have here, then, is an obtrusive attempt from ASU to inadvertently punish current tobacco users in hope of creating a healthier next generation.

Perhaps the most awkward statute of ASU’s newly implemented ban is how the university plans on enforcing a tobacco-free campus. The university’s website claims backers of the ban hope it will be enforced by community members and not legitimate law enforcement officials, a philosophy that “relies on individuals to educate one another about the tobacco-free policy at ASU and ask

that individuals extinguish tobacco material.” This puerile tactic seems doomed from the start. It is foolish to believe any pack-a-day smoker in need of a nicotine fix would politely listen to some citizen geek infringing on what were his or her rights until a few weeks ago. With no authoritative figures scaring potential consequences into the hearts of smokers, ASU’s little experiment will sink faster than a large anvil in a calm Pacific.

No long-term good comes from tobacco use in any form. That’s been pretty well established. What ASU

has done with its war on tobacco is likely create a whole new problem.

Smokers will smoke and dippers will dip. If they can actually enforce it through their planned community method, then tobacco users will have to migrate just off campus, where a plethora of new problems would likely sprout up. Whether the university’s cause is noble or just, banning tobacco use through a territory as large as ASU’s would be like trying to ban cell phone use in a classroom. Phones will still be sneakily used, and nicotine fixes will still be stealthily obtained.

A Wifi finding app will help you a ton, especially when you have less than an hour to get home and send your assignment in to meet a deadline. Wifi Finder is the specific name of an app for Android, but there are tons of them out there. If you’re an iPhone user, I’m sure you’re computer savvy enough to… find a Wi-Fi finding app for your platform.

5. Lemon wallet

We’re finally getting to your soon-to-be binge drinking problem. When you lose your wallet, it sucks. It really, really does. Anyway, alcohol makes it easier to lose things like your wallet and self-respect, but when you lose your wallet you want to be able to access those accounts the next morning for juice or ibuprofen or whatever you claim to be “the” hangover cure. Lemon wallet is an app that stores digital copies of your credit and debit cards making it easier to access your accounts wherever you go. You’re welcome. (Free)

6.News Apps

Finally, this is maybe one of the most important.

Download an app like The New York Times, or Washington Post . . . don’t be ignorant, learn about the world and be aware and compassionate. It’s seriously a problem if you don’t know what’s going on in Syria, or Egypt, or who Edward Snowden is. This isn’t coming from a journalist, this is coming from a concerned member of your college who doesn’t think the most respectable thing is to pregame harder than you party. Good luck in school, don’t be dumb.

8.Tinder

Tinder, for those of you who are a part of this trend where college kids don’t already interact with one another, may help you with your loneliness problem. The app signs in to your Facebook account and presents pictures and descriptions of people you may be interested in based upon your friends and the people they know, as well as people in your area. You then get to look at a picture and approve or deny these people. If they approve you as well, tinder lets you know. It’s great for being lazy with your romantic desires, which can work… I guess. Generally it may be a good idea to not give up so early on in your life but…

The NAU mobile app is a handy tool for tracking buses, knowing about what’s going on campus and accessing BlackBoard. It’s free, and available for all of you. It’s no fun to try and access your BlackBoard on a mobile web browser . . . trust me. (free)

10. Cookbook

The reverse cookbook is great for figuring out how to make a gourmet meal with the ketchup and saltines you have in your kitchen. It asks you what you have available as ingredients, then recommends to you what a great meal would be. It comes both on Android and iPhone. (Free)

10 Songs you’ll be sick of by September

hey are heard everywhere.

There is an element of imminence that drips from every pore of their design. Driven, relentless and unavoidable, the songs of the radio come and go as quickly as the tide, or an afternoon breeze, if the main purpose of said occurrences was to be ingrained in your head for days to follow. The maddening melodies and catchy chords bleed into our subconscious before slithering off into the dark, hellish depths from whence they came. Radio “hits”, as irritating as some may be, are strictly temporary and new monstrosities are being pumped out on the air for your listening pleasure, every day, which is why we’ve compiled a list of ten songs nearly guaranteed to make your stomach turn by September.

1. Cups “When I’m Gone” – Anna Kendrick: Held in the deep embrace of night, attempting to sleep, the claps, clicks and pops of this song will come creeping into the confines of the iron fortress that is your brain and slowly ease you into insanity. A radio adaptation of this song has been made from the musically inspired Anna Kendrick film, “Pitch Perfect.” Hopefully this song may finally find peace, so the restless may once again slumber.

2. Blurred Lines – Robin Thicke: Currently seated at number one of the Billboard Hot 100, this song of perpetuated low-level misogyny

really puts a lot in perspective.

Thicke wasn’t afraid to ask the big questions, like, “What do they make dreams for when you got them jeans on?” or, “What rhymes with hug me?” This song’s minimalistic beat is reminiscent of artist Afroman’s “Because I Got High,” but without the humorous ability to leave a lasting impression.

3. Bubble Butt – Major Lazer: Dating back, beyond the period of parachute pants and member’s only jackets, rear ends have been a source for lyrical and musical inspiration.

Appreciation, infatuation and discernment of the buttocks is laughable subject matter, but hopping on the bandwagon with nothing more than a high budget and shock value, this song probably won’t be mentioned in your children’s music theory class curriculum.

4. We Can’t Stop – Miley Cyrus: Sure we can. Honestly, I’m sure if we try really hard, Miley, we can put all of this music making business behind us and never look back. Sliding out onto the scene at a young age, with a microphone in one hand, and her father’s coattail’s in the other, this pop princess has managed to maintain some weird level of relevance over the years without flying over the cuckoo’s nest. Just because “she can’t stop”, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t take this song for what it truly is, a plea for help.

5. Radioactive – Imagine Dragons: Although this band has very re-

cently hit the mainstream making a pretty big impression, they are set on a path that only gives them that bittersweet fifteen minutes of fame.

This individual track, “Radioactive” has been played in commercials, trailers, sporting events, and of course, the radio to the point even the dead horse is beating a dead horse. This is a classic “Vampire Weekend,” or, “The Black Keys” scenario, that makes one think about how often they’ve honestly played the song “Holiday” or “Gold on the Ceiling” since they’ve downloaded them.

6. Love Somebody – Maroon 5: Didn’t Maroon 5 used to be a band?

One would be surprised as that line between music and overly synthesized mush has become more vague and undistinguishable throughout this group’s career. Without the intention of spoiling anything major, this latest song is one of many that features the sounds and styles of Adam Levine and synth.

7. Treasure – Bruno Mars: This song, like many Bruno Mars songs before it, and years’ worth of songs to come, will grow old quickly. The Bruno Mars songs harvest their youth while their fittest song exposes itself on the radio. Shortly after one Bruno Mars song perishes, it is replaced by the next spawn in line for the Mars cycle.

8. Mirrors – Justin Timberlake: Our good pal J.T. has done it again, right? With each album Timberlake

has released, new technical flares have been added to his style to accompany an image that the market already views of him. “Mirrors” is the latest installment in Timberlake’s endeavors that is reminiscent of just about all of his previous work.

Nothing new has been brought to the table and not much to be desired for long.

9. Summertime Sadness – Lana Del Rey: Lana Del Rey’s dramatic and genuinely depressing music comes synonymous with anything related to a mopey teenager. Summertime Sadness is so appropriately named that it’s almost too much effort to make jokes about it.

10. Holy Grail – Jay-Z: Timberlake comes back for a little more of the spotlight in this Jay-Z song that somehow manages to take all of the frustrating elements of vocal hooks in rap and still throw a curveball with a Nirvana remix. This song is truly out to cover as many bases as humanly possible, but is certainly no homerun.

The wheel continues to turn as new radio hits will come and go. Escape from this infinity is futile, so learning to grin and bear through the songs that drive us up the wall is but one step in the process of assimilation. Keeping in mind that for every song we get sick of, another song will be there ready to take its place, is the real horror that must be came to terms with.

In search of the Holy Grill: Battle at Bun Huggers

he darkest trail I had yet to encounter on my journey lay before me. Bun Huggers, an establishment located directly on Milton Road, was one of the few burger places I had seen for years but KNIGHT OF DA BURGER never set aside the time to check out.

Tracing back my steps, with each burger I have done battle with, the road has filled with empty baskets of fries and char broiled bits. The smells of greasy grill tops and fry cook body odor are the only things lingering where my foes once reigned.

Coming to the roads end, there are few that can still compete to be named the Holy Grill and king of Flagstaff burgers.

NAU Band to prepare for fall at Band Camp A

s the rest of the returning student body is enjoying the finals days of summer vacation, students are making the trek back up to Flagstaff for Band Camp and to prepare for the fall marching band season.

The NAU Marching Band

consists of wind players, drummers and dancers to provide musical and visual entertainment at the home football games throughout the fall semester. Other events include the homecoming parade and the marching band hosts NAU Band Day, a festival in which high school bands perform for a chance to make

it to the state marching festival.

In order to prepare their show for the season, which consists of several songs and sets of movements, that come together to create the complete effect of a marching show.

An average day at the camp would include different rehearsal

blocks that focus on the marching and musical aspects, including the show music and songs for the game commonly called stand tunes.

Directors of the camp hope to get people excited about the upcoming season.

“I hope to see a great enthusiasm toward the NAU band and the

new college experience of marching band,” said junior co-chair of the camp and sousaphone section leader, Nick DeBlasi.

The camp will take place in the Walkup Skydome.

If you don’t already know the premise of this work, the main character, Humbert Humbert, engages in a sexual relationship with his 12-year-old step daughter. While one would be hard pressed to find a more disgusting and terrible topic, it’s horrors have important meaning. The beauty of language shown by the beauty present even in the ugliest situations. It illuminates the benefits of viewing “the Other” as a human being, and seeing even the worst tragedies from their point of view, leading to empathy—a crucial lesson (or reminder) for people of any age. This will be especially important in college, when the people you meet will not always be likeable, or perhaps even worse than just unlikeable. However, this book teaches a lesson in compassion, beneficial in new surroundings with so many new people and new experiences, ones which perhaps are not always pleasant.

Love in the Time

- Gabriel Garcia Marquez-

Through the love story of Fermina and Florentino, Marquez discusses a timeless and important topic—the conflict between passion and stability. After her husband passes away, Florentino professes his love for Fermina, still burning from their childhood. The story recounts their lives from youth to their old age, and the complications involved in relationships and love. Fermina’s difficult choice to marry despite her love for Florentino sheds light on the disconnect between what one feels and what one may choose, and it is an essential read, to cope with the complexity of one’s social life, and personal life. Furthermore, to witness the interaction between the social and personal sphere is an incredible thing, mastered by Marquez, as his words shed incredible insight into the mind.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being - Milan Kundera-

Being in college means dealing with a lot of painful situations. In Kundera’s most famous novel, the story of four individuals with lives, which interconnect, coming together nearing the end of the novel.

Each of these four characters are all simultaneously detestable and beautiful as their characters and histories develop. The majority of the work is set in Prague during the Soviet occupation. Tomas and his wife Theresa, Sabrina and her lover Franz face psychological scars and issues, which are explored in a meaningful way. As they learn more about each other and themselves, they increase their coping with the situations of their lives and of each other’s. A lesson in coping with struggles and the past is crucial, and imperative to moving forward and making new and important changes in life, and this work can inspire just that.

Beloved - Toni Morrison-

A powerful novel which deals of issues of race, and the way in which people are haunted by their pasts, this book is one of the most famous and widely acclaimed works of current American fiction. It captures the horrors of the African slave trade and slavery, and the psychological impacts of history. The plot is primarily centered around a mother and daughter, who manage to escape from their plantation, and the haunting of their new home by a ghost of the past. However, it is not easy to forget the past, and Morrison’s work masters this common conflict.

A Farewell to Arms - Ernest Hemingway-

Although this work is commonly read in high school classrooms, it’s worth revisiting, or reading for the first time. It is the ultimate tale of loss, and perhaps after finishing it, it would be wise to allow for a few days to cry in bed with a box of tissues, while listening to

City&Colour. However, it is powerful and Hemingway exemplifies incredible use of language to evoke emotion. It can serve as a method of purging sadness after nearly any tragic situation, and help in evaluating and coping in the world after an important loss or trauma. It should be read in order to take in how something so tragic can be written in such a mesmerizing way. The novel was based on Hemingway’s own experiences in World War I, with Catherine (the heroine of the story) being based on a real woman he met in a hospital in Italy.

White Noise

-Don DeLillo-

Published in 1985, this book can provide fascinating insight into our current culture, making it essential college reading. The main character, Jack Gladney, is a professor at an unnamed college, who does research into Hitler studies and has an overwhelming fear of his own mortality. This fear turns into a dangerous obsession, and leads to important events throughout the rest of the novel. However, DeLillo address many issues with contemporary United States that he views as alarming. These include pseudo-intellectualism, consumerism and the toll it takes on both individuals and culture, and other problematic ideals which truly resonate with anyone who hasn’t been living under a rock for the past half a century. The mixture of humor and terror makes the novel engaging, and overall, essential reading.

Take your education outdoors

f you want to push yourself to the limits and discover the secret beauty of the Grand Canyon and surrounding Colorado Plateau region, consider signing up for NAU Outdoor Adventures programs. Their programs are priced for affordability for students and include food, safety supplies and trip logistics.

Various educational tools are integrated into the backpacking adventures, such as how to utilize no-trace impact principles, safety practices and the botany specific to each area.

The Havasupai trip takes students down to the rushing natural waterfalls that cascade down the rocks that make the Grand Canyon. The trip is typically three days, and a facilitator leads the group, ensuring the safety and proper camping skills of all the members of the group.

“I find we get many students just looking for a credit,” said Matthew Hartman, the Outdoor Adventures Coordinator from Spring 2013. “But those individuals are usually the most impacted and walk away with great appreciation and understanding of the outdoors and the importance of nature.”

NAU Outdoor Adventures offers a variety of different trips to appeal to a majority of students. This may be the only opportunity students will have in their lifetime to visit such archaeological sights for such a low price. NAU hires new athletic communications staff

After three months without an Assistant Athletic Director for Communications, NAU Athletics named Denise Thompson to the position on June 28. She will be the main contact for the football and men’s basketball teams while overseeing the athletic communications staff.

Thompson came to NAU after spending five years at Texas State University-San Marcos. While working for Texas State, she primarily worked with the men’s basketball and softball teams while assisting with track and field, football, volleyball and cross country. Thompson worked at Texas State while current NAU running back coach Jimmy Beal was on the Texas State football staff as a graduate assistant.

As an undergraduate, Thompson attended Fairleigh Dickinson University, where she ran track and cross country during her four years and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communications in 2007. At Texas State, she earned a master’s degree in sport management in 2011.

Thompson replaces Steve Shaff, who spent 13 years at the university.

Stayson Isobe was hired to be the Assistant Director for Athletic Communications, moving up from his previous role as a graduate assistant in the department. Isobe graduated with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education mathematics in 2011 from NAU and a master’s degree in educational leadership in 2013.

Jacks near end of training camp as quarterback question lingers

ith the monotonous training camp coming to an end in the coming days, the NAU football team now will begin to turn its attention to the 2013 season opener at UA. “There comes a point in time when you get through camp, that you just see the same guy every day and sometimes twice a day; it does get old,” said head coach Jerome Souers.

In an effort to fight the repetitive nature of camp and keep players motivated, the team has added a little fun to the ends of practice. On Aug. 20, it was running through a slip-and-slide out of a threepoint stance. In previous days other stress relievers and unique training opportunities included throwing water balloons and a needle in the haystack game pitting the offense against the defense.

“I know we are to the point now where we are ready to point our attention to an opponent,” Souers said. “We have a scrimmage tomorrow, it will be our last live scrimmage of camp and the rest of the time will be spent in preparation of the Arizona game.”

Who will begin the game under center against Arizona on Aug. 30 is still up in the air.

As has been the question since the graduation of Cary Grossart, the Lumberjacks’ starting quarterback remains a mystery. Both junior Chase Cartwright and sophomore Kyren Poe continue to split first-team reps, with a starter to be determined during game preparation next week.

While Cartwright started as the favorite, despite his recovery from a significant knee injury suffered last season, Poe has impressed in camp and remains a possibility to start.

After spending most of his time last season at wide receiver, Poe returned to quarterback during spring practice. The transition did not cause trouble for Poe, a high school quarterback, who followed a similar process in high school.

“My junior year of high school I played a lot of wide receiver and my senior year I went back to quarterback,” Poe said. “[Playing] receiver just really helped me in high school and I think it’s going to help me in college just to get used to the speed of the

game, and learning the offense.”

Poe’s time at wide receiver provided little in the way of statistics, only catching one pass for five yards while not recording a carry or pass attempt. The lack of proven on-field play at NAU caused Poe to work through spring to prove he can play quarterback.

“No one really knew if I could play quarterback,” he said, “I had some people that I had to prove wrong, but I had the people I wanted believing in me and I just kept playing. Just kind of keep my head down and keep going, hopefully gain the respect from my teammates.”

Poe used his running ability in high school at Hamilton High School in Chandler, rushing for 1,256 yards on 204 carries while throwing for 2,573 yards and completing 68 percent of his passes during his junior and senior years.

“If I play quarterback, we can spread the field out. That’s my game: I like to scramble, move around and make plays outside of the pocket. So, if we can spread defenses out, it gives us more running lanes for our running backs and I think it is tough for defenses to stop, as you have seen in the NFL.” Possibly with the most to gain from Poe’s potential at quarterback is senior running back Zach Bauman. After playing together during the 2009 season at Hamilton, Bauman has seen Poe’s ability to lead an offense.

“Kyren is a great athlete. As you see with his legs, he can make a play. [He can] scramble out of the pocket, kind of like a [Colin] Kaepernick type. Defenses and defensive ends are really going to have to respect him; they are not going to be able to crash down on me.”

Bauman and Poe are just two of the near 50 players on the NAU roster from Arizona. Souers said the annual trip to one of the two in-state Pac-12 schools is an exciting opportunity. “[They] grew up watching a lot of Arizona and Arizona State football and to go into that venue and play, that’s an exciting deal,” Souers said. “Regardless of what level it is, there is still that sense of pride that comes with playing that game.”

In the 2012 season trip to ASU, NAU lost 63–6 as both Bauman and Grossart left the game with injuries. The Lumberjacks

fared much better in their 2011 trip to Tucson, trailing 14–10 at halftime before the Wildcats pulled away in the 41–10 victory.

Bauman, who rushed for 99 yards and caught four passes for 20 yards in the 2011 matchup at UA, hopes to have a better showing than he did against ASU last year.

The senior running back left in the second quarter with a head injury after totaling just 12 yards.

“We are really excited to get out there and just play somebody else. Going out there with the mindset that we are going to win this game,” Bauman said.
