ut simply, this is a very exciting time for both sports and sports journalism. The stories are endless. NHL hockey and NBA basketball are beginning their preseasons, while the WNBA playoffs are in their final stretch. The United States won its first Ryder Cup since 2008, and in case you haven’t heard, the NFL is in its fifth week and Deflate-Gate is over.

Major League Baseball’s seemingly endless regular season has come to an end. Vin Scully’s seemingly endless career has come to an end, and the Chicago Cubs’ seemingly endless streak of 110 years without a world series could come to an end.

Indians’ manager Terry Francona has a chance to bring Cleveland its second championship in 2016. At this point some of you are either looking up what Cleveland’s mascot is, or picturing it in your mind while trying not to cringe.

Sports, arguably now as much as ever, is playing an extraordinary role in the construct of social change. Journalists such as Michael Wilbon and Stephen A. Smith have been vocal about the importance of prominent black athletes making their stance known on equality and the recent officer-involved shootings of African Americans. Many athletes have listened.

Sports is unique in that it offers a platform for people to immediately get their message out to millions of people. Right now, whether or not you agree with their cause, athletes are putting the spotlight on what they think is important.

On the other side of the coin, the divide between the United States and its MATTHEW KIEWIET Native American population continues to linger in the shadows, or smile at us in SPORTS EDITOR the case of Chief Wahoo.

This is not an attempt to downplay one issue and encourage you to focus on something else; quite the opposite, actually. If we are calling for social equality while wearing a hat with a cartoon caricature representing an entire culture whose misnomer dates back to Christopher Columbus, what message does that send? This situation unfortunately follows seemingly endless stories that haven’t changed for hundreds of years: Even in a world of social change, the Native American population has not seen much progress. In fields like journalism, that beg for originality, why do we focus on one issue at a time? Why do sports that are open to changes and tweaks to the rule book — something as old as the sport itself — insist that this one thing remain the way it’s always been.

Proposition 205 could legalize recreational marijuana SCOTT SANDON

T

his November, Arizona voters will decide whether or not it will become legal for persons over 21 years old to use marijuana for recreational purposes.

Proposition 205 would make Arizona the fifth state to legalize recreational marijuana in the United States.

On Nov. 5, 1996, California became the first state in the U.S. to legalize medical marijuana when the voters passed Proposition 215 by 56 percent. Since then, four states have legalized marijuana for both medical and recreational use, and 21 other states have legalized marijuana for medical use only.

In Arizona, medicinal marijuana is already legal, and Proposition 205 seeks to legalize marijuana for recreational use as well.

If Arizona does approve Proposition 205, it will join a movement to legalize recreational marijuana that hit national headlines with Colorado passing Amendment 64 in November 2012.

“If Colorado can do it, why not all the states?” asked freshman business marketing major Cynthia Gonzalez.

Public consumption of cannabis, selling cannabis without the proper licensing and driving under the influence of cannabis

would still be illegal according to Proposition 205. However, adults would be allowed to grow six marijuana plants in their private residence.

If passed, medical marijuana dispensaries would be provided with pathways to sell recreational marijuana, and approximately $55 million of the $123 million in tax revenue from recreational marijuana sales would go to funding education. The Department of Marijuana Licenses and Control would be formed to oversee the regulation of marijuana.

According to azmarijuana.com, Flagstaff is home to three medical marijuana dispensaries: Greenhouse of Flagstaff, High Mountain Health and Greenpharms.

Chris Hardeen, manager at Greenhouse of Flagstaff, said he believes dispensaries would be able to continue to treat medical marijuana patients, and that dispensaries would see an increase in sales if the recreational marijuana business was legalized.

In a survey conducted by The Lumberjack, 50 NAU students were asked “do you think Arizona should legalize recreational marijuana?” Of the 50 students surveyed, 33 answered yes, nine answered no and eight were undecided or indifferent.

major, said she supported Proposition 205 because “they can collect taxes that will go towards education.”

Jacob Hintze, senior music major, said he was opposed to Proposition 205.

When asked why he thought a majority of NAU students would support the proposition, Christopher Atcitty, freshman public health major, said, “everyone smokes, everyone has to smoke at least once in their lifetime.”

Medical marijuana dispensaries and recreational marijuana businesses will be able to operate as separate entities in the same location.

According to the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol, Proposition 205 will allow law enforcement to focus on different types of crimes, it will provide funding for schools and it will end the targeting of communities of people of color, who are more likely to be arrested for marijuana consumption and possession.

The group Arizonans for Responsible Drug Policy says Proposition 205 would make roads more dangerous as more people could drive while under the influence of marijuana. They also say recreational marijuana and advertisement for it endangers Arizona children and protects marijuana-

centered special interest groups.

Three polls taken this year by OH Predictive Insights, The Arizona Republic and Morrison and Cronkite News show that an average of 44.33 percent of Arizonans support the proposition, while 46.67 percent are opposed and nine percent are undecided.

he deadline to register to vote for Arizona residents is Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. Online applications are due by midnight.

The Arizona Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) has been canvassing NAU campus since the start of Fall semster to try and get students registered to vote for the Nov. 8 election.

There are about 40 student volunteers led

by PIRG representative, Flora Cardoni.

“We make the process easier for students,” said Cardoni. “This is our final big push this week before the deadline.”

PIRG is continuing to visit classrooms and has informational booths set up along the central pedway outside the University Union.

The organization has paper forms that students can fill out, and then PIRG turns the forms into the Coconino County Recorder’s Office.

Residents can also register online through the Arizona Motor Vehicle Division.

Cardoni encouraged all students to register to vote because “the millennial generation is the largest and most diverse group; we just surpassed the baby boomer [generation].”

U.S. challenged by extradition process in Brazil and Mexico CHANDLER COINER

E

xtradition is the long and lengthy process by which one country sends foreign nationals back to their home countries.

The United States Department of Justice reports there are roughly 650 to 900 cases for extradition to the U.S. every year, and one of those cases is American Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte. Lochte is currently in the U.S. awaiting Brazil’s response to his charges of falsely reporting a crime in Rio de Janeiro during the 2016 Summer Olympics.

This story of Lochte’s potential extradition comes in the wake of a heightened globalization.

Globalization is the concept that as the world becomes more economically, politically and socially connected, the actions in one country more directly affect the lives of people in other countries.

Edward Snowden, former NSA contractor who leaked top secret government files on several of its domestic spying programs, fled the country

afterward.

“Lochte and Snowden are not similar at all,” said Lenze. “Snowden brought to light government surveillance programs and asylum laws are protecting him for the time being. Having whistleblowers is important for democracy, but each case must be weighed on its merit. There are pros to what he did, but I think he also could’ve reported his displeasure to his superiors instead of stealing the information and releasing it to journalists.”

The U.S., along with many other nations, has taken precautions in regards to preventing extradition legal dilemmas.

According to Title 18, Chapter 209 of the U.S. Code, the U.S. has mutual extradition treaties with over 110 countries. The bulk of these treaties were created throughout the 20th century with some of the notable neighboring countries including Canada, Mexico and much of the Caribbean Islands. The U.S. also has a treaty with Brazil, the host of the 2016 Olympic Games.

The Associated Press (AP) reported in August,

Lochte was competing in the Rio Games where he was charged by police for falsely reporting a robbery in Rio de Janeiro. If tried in absentia, or not being physically present, and found guilty, Lochte would find himself subject to extradition by the U.S. back to Brazil.

“They questioned and let him leave, so I doubt there’s much chance he’d be forced to go back to Brazil,” said Paul Lenze, senior lecturer in politics and international affairs at NAU. Brazil, despite its treaty with the U.S., constitutionally guarantees its citizens protection from being extradited to a foreign country in Provision 51 of its “Fundamental Rights and Guarantees.” The only exception to this provision is if they commit a crime and then become naturalized or if the crime involves trafficking of illegal narcotics.

This provision of the Brazilian constitution has affected the U.S. before, so the AP speculates that consequently, U.S. prosecutors could take a similar, counterstance if Lochte is demanded to be

returned.

Although Lochte is not free of the charges yet, the climate of the U.S. extradition situation with Brazil could favor him in this case.

“The U.S. protects its citizens, but [the] likelihood of extradition depends on the nature of the crime,” Lenze said.

Despite how this scenario might unfold, U.S. law extradites its citizens very differently than Brazil.

Another part of Title 18, Chapter 209 grants the secretary of state the power to return a U.S. citizen to the requesting country even if the treaty with said country doesn’t explicitly require the U.S. to.

While the U.S. is under no obligation to send Lochte back to Brazil to be either tried or serve a prison sentence, unlike Brazil, there is no constitutional right protecting him either.

The AP also reported on two drug lords, “El Guero” Palma and “El Chapo” Guzman, who are both in the process of swapping hands between the U.S. and Mexico. To read the full story, visit JackCentral.org.

Flagstaff and France take steps to a reduced carbon footprint MARCELA DELGADO

W

hile convenient for packaging, Plastic products all over the world have caused problems for the environment and have contributed to littering cities, oceans and waterways.

While people cite a lack of viable alternatives for plastic bags, France banned plastic to reduce the carbon footprint.

President Francois Hollande and the French Ministry of Ecology ask citizens to “act together” as a nation to set example for other countries.

Many cities and states in the United States have taken part in reducing plastic waste, including Flagstaff.

According to the Ministry of Ecology in Paris, the Energy Transition for Green Growth Act will reduce both the greenhouse gas emissions of the city by 40 percent, and 30 percent less fossil fuel will be consumed by the year 2030, compared to 2012.

France adopted a ban on the distribution of disposable plastic bags in fruit and vegetable markets this past January along with prohibiting all plastic utensils by 2020.

Flagstaff’s movement, Ban the Bag, was first brought to city council in 2007. Intense Flagstaff winds causes loose trash, 80 percent being plastic bags, to collect in nearby trees and waterways. In 2013, removing the plastic bags and other trash from the areas around the landfill cost the city approximately $67,000.

In January 2015, the city council considered

banning plastic bags once again.

City officials and residents of Flagstaff were apprehensive about banning plastic bags completely.

Councilmember Jeff Oravits said on his Facebook page, “With all of our challenges, I believe this to be a complete misappropriation of staff time and tax dollars.”

At the meeting in January, Nicole Woodman, the city’s sustainability manager, encouraged Flagstaff residents to recycle and reduce their use of plastic bags.

Some of the statistics Woodman released included the effectiveness of bans and fees for bag usage. Point-of-sale bags are used in grocery stores and convenience stores after a purchase to carry goods. Woodman noted other cities that had enforced a fee on point-of-sale bags such as Boulder, Colo., and Eugene, Ore. Both cities reported that almost half of retailers saw a decrease in the use of plastic bags.

In France, grocery stores and shopping centers have been faced with the problem of replacing the plastic bags with other alternatives. Some suggestions have been to use paper bags and even plastic bags made out of biosourced materials.

Another alternative could be the use of cornstarch bags that decompose in water and in carbon dioxide.

Ségolène Royal, the French Environment Minister, said, “The development of new biosourced plastics will create about 3,000 jobs in France.”

In Flagstaff, grocery stores have faced the same problems of finding alternative bag sources. Stores

around town have taken part in reducing their point-of-sales bags through recycling programs and selling reusable bags.

One of the stores in the Flagstaff area that has acknowledged the plastic problem is Fry’s Food and Drug store. An employee at Fry’s who asked to remain anonymous commented on the ways the store has reduced their plastic bag usage. He explained the point-of-sale bags used in the store, which have a brown tint, are made from recycled materials. The bags have also been made thinner to reduce the amount of plastic used to make each bag.

As a community, NAU has done its part in organizing the reduction of plastic waste. NAU’s Office of Sustainability and Green NAU have played major roles in supporting more sustainable community projects.

The Office of Sustainability engages students, employees and community members to take part in sustainable initiatives all over campus. To further help the community, the Office of Sustainability created the 2010 Action Plan. It was created as a guide for the NAU community toward more sustainable living. However, the plan does not go into full detail about specifically reducing plastic waste on campus.

In 2011, recycling bins labeled with what is acceptable to recycle and what is not, were introduced on campus to assist students in identifying recyclable materials. The bins themselves can also be recycled.

Also, in another effort to alleviate the use of

plastic bags on campus, NAU started to not give out point-of-use bags but offers resusable alternatives at The Wedge Market and Pizza on north campus.

“I think it’s inconvenient to students if you have a lot of groceries and don’t have a way to carry them,” said Ashley Briese, junior public health major.

Many students and cities around the world have been able to reduce their plastic use. As of December 2014, more than 170 cities have bans or fees on plastic bags.

Since the Ban The Bag city council meeting in Flagstaff took place, there have not been significant strides to continue the effort on a citywide plastic bag ban. France is leading the way to a more sustainable future.

Stranded while black: the killing of Terence Crutcher ELIZABETH WENDLER

I

n this age of victim blaming and perpetrator sympathy, folks are quick to point the blame toward the motionless black man lying face down in the street.

When a black woman, man or child fails to follow a police officer’s orders, it is supposedly their own fault they are shot, or even killed.

With all the advances and safety precautions the United States loves to boast about, is a gun still the only method of subduing a black person in this country?

The alleged murder of Terence Crutcher Sept. 16, 2016, at the hands of officer Betty Shelby was just that: murder. When Crutcher’s car stalled out on an empty roadway in Tulsa, Okla., that Friday, he should not have had to fear for his life from those meant to protect and serve him. He should not have been met with multiple police vehicles, a helicopter circling above and officers with guns already drawn.

Regardless of what others claim Crutcher should have done that day, there is no excuse for shooting a man at point-blank range without

just cause. Shelby, a five-year officer of the Tulsa Police Department, has since been charged and released on bond for doing just that. Susan Witt, spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office, says Shelby could face four years to life in prison for manslaughter in the state of Oklahoma. Her fellow officers, who were allegedly complicit in the murder, have yet to be charged.

This is not justice. It is scapegoating at best and negligence of the law at worst.

While Shelby is undoubtedly guilty, having been the one to pull the trigger, it is unjust to allow those who stood by aimlessly while the situation escalated to continue at their jobs without scrutiny or punishment.

Crutcher deserves justice.

Black citizens deserve justice. Racism did not end the day black people were set free from a century of rape, murder and slavery. Racism did not end the day black citizens of the U.S., afraid of Jim Crow-era lynchings, were finally allowed the right to vote. Racism did not end the day President Barack Obama took office.

Racism has not ended. The noose simply transformed into a gun, while the complacent

masses stay the same.

In her book, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness, Michelle Alexander describes the many ways the U.S. criminal justice system acts as the new form of slavery. In this new caste system of oppression, black U.S. citizens are routinely punished with undue severity, incarcerated at disproportionate rates and murdered with alarming frequency.

In her own words, “We have not ended racial caste in America; we have merely redesigned it.”

To the colorblind masses who fail to understand this notion of continued racism in the U.S., I say: take a closer look. Educate yourself. Look upon the faces of the Black Lives Matter movement and learn why it is so important.

Rather than jump to conclusions, it is up to us all to ask the tough questions. An entire race of people should not go their whole lives silently abiding by a system that harms them, no matter what they do. There is no rulebook for how to survive police brutality as a black person in the U.S. And so black men, women and children

die.

One by one. Day by day. Each time, it is somehow the fault of the man with a bullet in his lung, the woman raped in back of a police car or the child wearing a hoodie at night. It is becoming more difficult to survive as a black person, and it is time that the U.S. and its citizens try to understand why.

Taking a stand: Does not voting mean you don’t care?

n United States culture, there is an underlying current that citizens have to vote out of duty and respect for the sacrifices of those who came before. However, not everyone will, and some are justified in this.

The apathetic will not influence the election in any conducive manner and the rebellious can speak their mind by not voting at all.

Granted, there are voters who do fit the mold of duty and respecting the opportunity they have.

“I honor those that died and fought for my right [to vote] — a right that is an American freedom,” said Heather Tilton Benoit in a CNN Facebook discussion on voting.

Yet, approximately half of eligible voters don’t vote. In some dissatisfied circles, the notion of requiring everyone to vote is considered.

Let’s suppose everyone does. In this scenario, there are the people who normally vote, those who don’t but are now researching issues in order to vote seriously, the trolls who mess with the system and those who apathetically participate.

These last two groups are concerning: they create an inaccurate depiction of U.S. citizens’

desires. The accumulation of passive voters’ random ballots to record participation rather than interest is not conducive. Requiring people to vote does not fix the perceived problem of lowvoter turnout, but introduces more problems into the system. Not everyone should go to the polls in November.

Lack of participation is not inherently worthy of guilt.

There is a popular belief non-voters shouldn’t complain because they didn’t take the opportunity to speak their mind during the election. While people should be active in shaping their world and solving concerning issues, abstention is not inaction. Even apathetic non-voters are making a choice, the choice to not worry about their ballot since they are not invested in the issues. But there are those who choose not to vote as a way to speak out against the system.

“I will never participate in a two-party system that does not allow for anyone but a Democrat or Republican,” said Nathan Rennicker in the same CNN discussion.

Non-voters, like Rennicker, are passively protesting, and the methods they use do not inherently mean their concern is invalid Those

who sit on the sidewalk and abstain from voting are just as valid as those who do. Voting is a manner of expression within the system, but there are other ways as well.

One does not have to vote to be able to write letters to officials or to post political critiques online. The First Amendment’s right to peaceably assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances does not have the qualifier: “For those who vote.”

But the spirit behind non-voters remaining silent carries an important caution: non-voters and voters alike are responsible for their choices on Election Day and have to live with them.

The months leading up to Election Day are full of choices: whether to register at all, who to vote for, to vote or to abstain. The apathetic have to own that they did not care enough to show up, and the abstainers making a statement have to demonstrate that it was a conscious choice.

Otherwise, how can they be distinguished from the rest of those who stay home Election Day? Abstainers should also be conscientious that statements made outside of voting will not have the same impact as voting. Not everyone will listen, and if any change is to occur it will have to

include the system in some manner.

Voting, or not voting, is an opportunity for citizens to take advantage of their agency and express their opinions. While not everyone should vote out of duty and responsibility, thought should be put into the decision of whether to vote and who for, even if it’s just enough self reflection to discover apathy. Social pressures should not compel citizens to vote, but rather their conscience and values.

This November, people need to own their decisions.

Police on a power trip: Who are they really protecting?

t is seldom a good thing when you hear a police officer talking about “covering his ass.”

In West Hartford, Conn., a protester’s camera caught a group of officers conspiring against him in an attempt to find probable cause for a ticket.

The protester, Michael Picard, was a peaceful demonstrator fighting against DUI checkpoints, which he believed were a waste of the government’s time and spending.

After standing on the highway with a sign for about an hour and a half, Picard was approached by the officers manning the checkpoint. At this point, one of the officers approached Picard and knocked his camera to the ground, claiming it was illegal to photograph the officer.

The camera appeared to be broken, but Picard picked it up and attempted to turn it back on. The officer then removed the camera from his possession, and took it back to his car where he began speaking to the other officers about the protester. What these officers did not know, however, was that the camera was in fact turned on and recording their every word.

While in the car, the officers discussed the different

charges they could give Picard, including public disturbance and reckless use of a highway by a pedestrian, neither of which the protester was really guilty. The recording captures a number of phrases from the officers, including “We gotta punch a number on this guy,” “We really gotta cover our asses” and even a made-up story about the protester waving a gun around on the freeway, making motorists uncomfortable.

Clearly, none of the things these officers were recorded saying are acceptable, especially in today’s society. Police brutality has become a huge and disgusting trend. The accidental recording of this conversation alone provides evidence that some officers have become more interested in protecting themselves than actually serving the people who pay their salaries. It seems a large number of officers have experienced somewhat of a power trip and their primary instinct is no longer to serve and protect, but to abuse their authority.

This new police mentality is the reason people experience fear in the presence of men and women in blue. If their only job is to protect us, we should feel safe whenever police officers are around. However, that is not always the case. Fear is the reason people slow down when they see a law enforcement vehicle on the highway, even if they’re going

the speed limit. Fear is the reason someone’s heart may skip a beat whenever an officer approaches them. The fact that a simple traffic violation could result in numerous tickets, or even in some cases death, is not serving and protecting.

Of course it is important to bring up that not all officers behave in this manner. Many put their lives on the line everyday in order to protect the safety of civilians. The idea that there are plenty of officers who do their jobs correctly and honorably, however, does not mean we should simply overlook the great deal of officers who don’t.

When workers in other occupations make mistakes, they are corrected in an attempt to fix the problems. When fastfood workers mix up orders, customers return their meals.

When cashiers give someone the wrong change, they do the math. When heart surgeons make mistakes, surviving victims or their families sue. Yet, when police officers don’t do their job right, speaking up is never enough. For the sake of our safety, it is important to recognize when cops simply aren’t working for the benefit of the people but rather their own personal gain, and expose this wrongdoing.

It is their job to protect us from the dangers of the world. They should not be the danger.

Is the war on drugs the most ethical move for our country?

f you care about where your products come from, you probably shouldn’t buy illegal drugs. By purchasing certain illicit drugs — namely cocaine — you are inadvertently playing into a bigger scheme of illegal activity including human trafficking and murder.

But what if illegal drugs weren’t illegal? Chances are, there would be a reduction of violence in the drug trade.

But, let’s look at the facts.

According to the Office of National Drug Control Policy, there were 546 metric tons of cocaine smuggled into Mexico in 2011. This also happened to be a peak year for murder in Mexico. The most recent data from the organization shows in 2013, cocaine users outnumbered heroin users five times. Although cocaine is illegal for good reasons, maybe banning the substance altogether isn’t the best solution for the violence surrounding its current status.

Drug cartels don’t care about sustainable growing, human rights or the law in general. So why is the government creating even stronger cartels by inadvertently protecting the ones that don’t get busted?

Think about it, when large amounts of drugs are seized at the border, the price of all the other drugs which cross and enter the economy in the United States often goes up. By playing into the war on drugs, the U.S. has failed to address that the societal problem with drugs is a product of the psychology of the addict themselves, not from the drugs existing in the first place.

The war on drugs is a total failure.There needs to be more focus on the individual user and not the producers and smugglers.

If more resources were partitioned toward rehabilitation programs

and assisting the users in overcoming their vices and replacing them with healthier habits, maybe the problem would begin to see light at the end of the tunnel.

However, as it stands, this is not the case.

According drugwarfacts.org, approximately half of inmates in federal prisons were serving time for drug offenses in 2014. This adds up to 95,800 inmates. Furthermore, around 16 to 18 percent of inmates committed other crimes in order to get drug money. According to the Justice Policy Institute, there is a better, more cost-effective answer to treating addiction in contrast to negative punishments.

Treatment for addiction in the community can cost $20,000 less than incarceration, and even create higher returns towards publicsafety spending. A study from the Washington State Institute for Public Policy found that community drug treatment yields more than $18 per each dollar spent on treatment related to crime, which only yields 37 cents in public safety per dollar spent.

In light of this knowledge, doesn’t it seem ridiculous drug possession is still criminalized?

The war on drugs is a big failure. Addicts don’t care it’s illegal; they just want their next fix. This sad cycle of addiction creates an ethically questionable source of supply and demand. Innocent people are impacted in countries which produce cocaine to illegally import to the U.S. Successes have been seen in countries which have decriminalized all drugs.

Countries like the Netherlands and Portugal have legalized most drugs and decriminalized possession. After decriminalization, the countries began to find lowered rates of drug use in general, and a 17 percent decrease in HIV infection rates, likely a result of lowered heroin use.

If the U.S. began to take a more liberal approach to treating drug users, it could yield similar results. It’s worth a shot, because the approach that has already been utilized is a disaster for everyone.

Legalize drugs, give addicts proper treatment and watch crime, drug use and gang activity will decline as a more compassionate attitude is given to users.

After many addictions are healed, less people will be addicted and fewer people will fund drug suppliers and dealers through their habit.

RECRUITMENT NOT JUST A UNIFORM ON CAMPUS SUNDAY MILLER

W

hen students see their peers in military uniforms marching around campus, what they don’t see is the personal growth, travel opportunities and educational benefits the Air Force has to offer.

Flagstaff is home to the 362 Air Force recruiting squadron on South Woodlands Village Boulevard. NAU has its very own Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (AFROTC) program on campus. The United States armed forces is made up of five armed forces: Air Force, Navy, Army, Marine Corps and Coast Guard.

The official mission of Air Force is to “fly, fight and win in air, space and cyberspace.” The people of the Air Force aim to pursue their mission with excellence and integrity to become leaders, innovators and warriors. The Air Force, founded in 1947, is the most recent military branch formed and since its creation has been instilling discipline and direction into the lives of men and women across the country.

Technical Sergeant Adam Wright is an enlisted recruiter stationed in Flagstaff. Wright has been in the Air Force for more than 12 years and has been to five different continents. Wright’s deployments include two visits to Afghanistan, one to Iraq and several more to countries like Africa.

“My story is I grew up in a small town in Texas, I went to a university in Commerce, the military was never on my mind,” said Wright. “I went to college and it wasn’t what I thought it was, I was trying to work, pledge to a fraternity, take full-time hours and it was just too much, the bills never stopped. I was working and I saw myself in my supervisor, 45-years-old working at Home Depot and I thought, I had to do something different so that’s when I walked into a recruiter’s office and said ‘sign me up,’ and three weeks later, I was in basic training.”

The three core values of the Air Force are “integrity first, service before self and excellence in all we do.” The Air Force focuses on six key capabilities including: air and space superiority, global presence, rapid global mobility, precision engagement, information superiority and agile combat support.

“I was a rambunctious 21-year-old, didn’t know what I was doing with life, now I’ve got structure, disciple, education, I’ve traveled the world, I’ve got a whole different skill set that I wouldn’t have had if I did not pursue this opportunity,” Wright said.

The Air Force is the only military branch that has its own community college — the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF).

“Every single person that graduates basic military training is enrolled in this,” Wright said. “While you go to your technical school to learn your job, you actually earn college credit toward an Associate’s in that field.”

According to the CCAF website, CCAF partners with approximately 108 affiliated Air Force schools, 82 Education

Service Officers worldwide and more than 1,500 civilian academic institutions. Together the college serves about 300,000 active, guard and reserve enlisted personnel.

Every year, the CCAF awards more than 22,000 associate in applied science degrees from 68 different programs.

“With the military, there’s the Community College of the Air Force, tuition assistance, and the GI Bill,” Wright said. “I’ve used two of those and I have one waiting for me whenever I choose to separate. I have a scholarship in my back pocket waiting to be used.”

First Lt. Alison Gonzalez who works in Air Force intelligence is serving a special-duty assignment as a ROTC instructor at NAU. Gonzalez teaches underclassmen cadets along with being an Air Force recruiter.

“The reason why I chose the Air Force was because they are more diverse when it comes to gender. You’ll find a lot more women within the Air Force than you will in many of the other military branches. I use that when I recruit because there’s a lot of people who think the military is just for men but they see me out there and they realize they can do it too,” said Gonzalez.

Each branch of NAU ROTC releases a Executive Summary every semester. As of Fall 2016, the Air Force ROTC is made up of 59 percent male and 41 percent female cadets. NAU Army ROTC is made up of 83 percent male and 17 percent female population.

AFROTC programs are designed for students to study at the college of their choice. While earning a degree, students are preparing to become Air Force officers when they graduate.

“I’m definitely more of a worldly person; I was always a leader but I didn’t realize the actual potential but going through that and realizing the capabilities I have and pushing myself and just the leadership skills I have developed over time, it has helped me to be

a stronger person,” Gonzalez said.

As of August, NAU’s AFROTC program is 14 in the nation out of 145 Detachments. NAU’s Detachment 027 aims to “Develop quality leaders for the Air Force.” There are over 150 NAU cadets of various majors that will become Second Lieutenants when they graduate.

Tommy Rabska, senior marketing major and AFROTC cadet, joined his freshman year at NAU. Now part of the professional military core, Rabska is in charge of leading nine other cadets as well as recruiting.

“I’m going out to Discover NAU events, high schools, I’m just spreading the word about ROTC and how it’s helped in my life.

My grades improved when I joined, my overall satisfaction with life because I have a purpose, something I’m going toward. I’m taking care of myself mentally, physically, spiritually and it’s pretty much all because of the Air Force,” said Rabska.

The government helps many veterans achieve a higher education through resources like the Post-9/11 GI Bill. The GI Bill, which allots veterans $90,000 to help them attend any university and pursue degrees up to a Ph.D level.

Besides education, the Air Force also offers medical, dental, travel, pay, security and retirement benefits.

“I feel proud, I take a lot of pride in my uniform, I wear it correctly, I make sure to represent the Air Force well, I have to be the most upstanding citizen possible and that’s exactly what I strive for,” Rabska said.

elcome to Flagstaff, a can’t-miss destination in northern Arizona.

This guide is for travelers with a limited amount of time but still want to get the most out of their day.

Morning:

Waking up to the crisp, clean air is refreshing. With fresh air comes the desire to hike, camp and explore — options many locals enjoy regularly. With such a morning at hand, they might pick up a homemade Asiago bagel with veggie cream cheese from Biff ’s Bagels, a bagel shop located on south Beaver Street.

Following breakfast, they might head toward Fatman’s Loop, a popular hike east from the downtown region.

For junior political science major, Madeline Waddell, outdoor activities are a must while in Flagstaff.

“Hiking Mt. Elden is perfect because it is fairly close to campus and not too difficult of a hike. Not to mention, the view of Flagstaff is spectacular,” said Waddell. “I also love walking along Fatman’s Loop Trail, which is connected to Elden, because it has these wonderful trees that I have only seen on that trail. The Urban Trail is also great for walking because it travels all throughout Flagstaff. There is one trail that leads you into a field of wildflowers and it is

one of the most glorious things to see.”

Not interested in hiking? Those who want to be pampered might enjoy spending a morning at the Spatique day spa receiving a facial and maybe a massage.

If you want to spend some time in the great outdoors, heading out to Lake Mary with a fishing pole and some coffee from Macy’s European Coffeehouse and Bakery and a is a great way to diminish stress and let worries slip away.

Afternoon:

As the sun rises higher in the sky, hunger begins to set in — it is time to decide what to feast on for lunch.

Stroll through historic downtown, and one will find the options for eating are endless.

The cuisines of Flagstaff range between many cultures, sometimes making the options hard to select from. One can find Mexican, Italian, Latin American, Indian and traditional American restaurants throughout the area and along Route 66.

Looking to try something new outside of your typical chain restaurant? Walk over to Criollo Latin Kitchen, known for delicious street tacos and an appetizing weekend brunch menu and plenty of happy-hour options. For the picky eater, try Diablo Burger. The menu boasts a collection of locally-sourced beef patties — served on English muffins with

a side of fries — known to satisfy anyone looking for a great, American-style meal. For those looking to save money, lunch options at Pato Thai Cuisine tend to stay less than $10.

The Visitor Center, located off Route 66 in the train station, can provide “suggestions for the best places to visit or dine based on your personal preferences.”

This includes directions to anywhere in Flagstaff, recommendations for attractions and activities to match time and needs.

Once appetites are satiated, the rest of the afternoon may be enjoyed window shopping around Heritage Square in downtown.

Flagstaff ’s downtown boasts many locally owned unique boutiques, such as Shoes-nSuch, the Rainbow’s End and Peace Surplus.

For those with a sweet tooth, stopping in the Sweet Shoppe and Nut House on Aspen is a must.

If shopping is not on the itinerary, head west toward Lowell Observatory to catch a guided tour. This can be an intriguing way to learn more about Flagstaff — an International Dark Skies city priding itself on the breathtaking view of the night sky.

The observatory offers viewings of the sun at different times by looking through telescopes.

Grant writer for Lowell Observatory, Hannah Graves, shares what she loves about the observatory.

“Lowell educators are a fountain of astronomical knowledge,” said Graves.

“During the day, they teach visitors about solar prominences and sunspots with the help of a solar telescope. At night, visitors learn about different objects in view including the moon, planets and globular clusters … Educators also lead tours of campus during the day that highlight the discovery of Pluto and the 24inch Clark telescope, which founder Percival Lowell used to draw maps of Mars and astronomer V.M. Slipher used to detect the expanding nature of the universe in 1914.”

Evening:

As the sun sets on the town, tourists find themselves getting hungry again. One might indulge at the well-known restaurant, Karma Sushi, or travel a bit farther down San Francisco Street toward the Lumberyard Brewery for its barbecue and delicious mac-and-cheese balls.

One of the best ways to wrap up the night in town is to grab a few blankets, a hot tea from Steep Leaf Lounge on Aspen Avenue and Leroux Street and head toward Wheeler Park, located by City Hall. There, one can watch twinkling stars emerge one-by-one through the canopy of towering cottonwood trees.

Whether it is 24 hours, or even just 12 hours, Flagstaff provides a variety of entertaining, educational or enjoyable activities.

High on comedy: MAKENNA LEPOWSKY

S

hane Mauss began to toy with the idea of becoming a comedian at only 10 years old. Now, he is making people laugh from stages across the country.

Mauss, 36, put off the idea of entering stand-up comedy for years after graduating from high school. Eventually, his fears were triumphed by his resilient desire to fulfill his passion — to bring smiles, laughter and joy to others through comedy. With his courage in one bag and his comedic talents in the other, Mauss left the familiarities of La Crosse, Wis., for Boston.

“I started in Boston and caught some breaks really early on, winning an award at a comedy festival run by HBO,” said Mauss, who won the award in his late 20s. “Then I got my first Conan appearance and after that I got a bunch of stuff on Comedy Central and more late night appearances. Then, I was able to do full-time comedy.”

Following the HBO event, Mauss was shocked, but the exposure helped boost his career.

“It was kind of amazing because then I got my pick of all the top managers and agents in Los Angeles,” Mauss said. “The Conan booker also saw me there so things kind of took off for me.”

Mauss is currently busy touring the world. His career has taken him around the world to countries such as Australia, Ireland, Scotland, England, Canada and more.

Mauss has been featured on Conan five times, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Showtime and Comedy Central Presents. Mauss most recently premiered his Netflix special, Mating Season.

One of Mauss’ more recent comedy albums is My Big Break, which spent considerable time at the top of the comedy iTunes charts.

“My Big Break was all about breaking my feet and why we experience negative emotions. It consists of some jokes, storytelling and tad bits of science,” Mauss said. “My Netflix special, Mating Season, is about the science of mating behavior.

I just like doing themed shows where I can tackle a subject with a little more depth — it is a more interesting outlet for comedy than just regular stand-up.”

However, the road to making one’s dreams a reality is not always smooth; oftentimes, obstacles stand in the way. Prior to his big break, Mauss found becoming a comedian was more difficult than he expected.

“Before, I went from near homelessness to being a full-time comic and doing international shows,” Mauss said.

At that time, Mauss bounced between careers. With a blue-collar upbringing, he worked in factories. In the three years leading up to his comedic break, Mauss also had various temporary and construction jobs.

Mauss shared the road to fame with fellow comics.

“Some of my comic friends are Myq Kaplan and Zach Sherwin who have been there from the beginning,” Mauss said.

“We are all doing pretty well now and we all admire each other’s work — our styles are quite different.”

side, Kaplan and Mauss met each other at an open mic near the infancy of both of their careers. In the years since, the two have performed together a number of times. “[Mauss] is a natural — a super hard-working natural — I like how prolific he is,” said Kaplan. “I particularly like how into science he has gotten in the past few years, how much he incorporates that interest into his work, and how much research he does. It is inspiring and wonderful to watch.”

Kaplan predicts nothing but continued success for Mauss, right up until he makes his last joke.

“Eventually Shane will die, I bet,” Kaplan said. “But before then, he will keep making amazing comedy and podcasts, and if there is any justice in the world — I think there is at least a little — a lot of people who would love what Shane does will find him.

He will keep growing, learning, asking questions and sharing, until human consciousness is no longer a mystery.”

Through various implementations of talent, knowledge and charming character, Mauss doesn’t bind himself strictly to standup comedy. He also makes appearances on podcasts and has been featured on WTF, You Made It and TOFOP. Mauss created his own podcast in 2014 called Here We Are. The podcast’s theme revolves around science, perception and consciousness. Mauss discusses various topics with academics and scientists he interviews from around the country.

Letting science be a leading force in his projects, his current tour, A Good Trip, explores psychedelics as one of the main subjects.

“This tour is a themed show that is about psychedelics but it is mostly about science,” Mauss said. “Also it is a way to talk about science, perception and consciousness.”

The tour is funded by The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), a non-profit research and educational association. The organization’s goal is to develop medical, legal and cultural contexts for people to benefit from the careful uses of psychedelics and marijuana.

“My show is all about psychedelics, and the meditative, therapeutic benefits of them,” Mauss said. “However, I don’t glamorize them as party drug. I work with MAPS and they are serious academics that are researching the effects — for example the effects of of MDMA on PTSD — which they are trying to get legalized for clinical use.”

Brad Burge is the director of communications and the marketing conference director at MAPS. Burge first met Mauss in Berkeley, Calif., when Mauss was on tour collecting interviews for his Here We Are podcast.

“I was impressed with the Here We Are podcast because it makes science fun,” said Burge. “There’s no reason that research and education can’t be entertaining, and the success of the Here We Are podcast shows that to be true.”

Mauss’ intentions of spreading information about psychedelics complements MAPS’ interests.

“The tour closely aligns with MAPS’ efforts to educate the public honestly about psychedelics and marijuana,” Burge said.

“Shane’s show makes it easy to laugh about difficult and previously stigmatized subjects, which makes it easier for people to have

dinner table conversations about psychedelics and psychedelic experiences, rather than sweeping them under the rug.”

Making it to 75 cities on his current tour, Mauss stopped at Firecreek Coffee Company Oct. 3. Coverage can be found at jackcentral.org “Much of my show is a lot about the unfair taboos and stereotypes associated with psychedelics,” Mauss said. “Even if people have some prejudices against the subject or do not know anything about it, I think if they come to the show they will understand things a lot more.”

At Mauss’ show, audience members might learn something about psychedelics — and have a few laughs along the way.

nticipation rippled through the packed Orpheum Theater, Sept. 30. The smell of pizza mingled with the excited chatter of climbers and outdoor enthusiasts — the Reel Rock Film Tour was back.

The 11th year in production, the Reel Rock series showcases the biggest, baddest and raddest adventures of the year in the climbing world. Brought to northern Arizona by the Flagstaff Climbing Center, the production kicks off the Flagstaff fall climbing season with a bang.

Jeff Snyder, the master of ceremonies for the event and professional Flagstaff climbing guide, spoke of the effect of the event on the community.

“It’s really the start of the Flagstaff climbing season. I feel like people leave here feeling really amped up,” said Snyder.

Reel Rock 11 highlighted the quickly growing youth climbing movement, a crew of daring climbers exploring rock in the Arctic, game-changing female climbers and more.

Ashima Shiraishi was featured in this year’s production; the first woman and youngest person ever to climb a V15 — the second hardest difficulty in the sport. Shiraishi is the face of youth climbing around the world. Though clearly one of the most elite climbers in the sport, she stays humble.

“Numbers aren’t everything,” said Shiraishi, in relation to her achievements and future goals.

The Reel Rock crew followed her and fellow youth climbing icon, Kai Lightner, to Norway in search of the hardest and proudest climbs in the world.

“My dream is to climb the best routes out there,” Shiraishi said.

In addition to the talented youth, Reel Rock 11 focused in on exciting new ascents in the most extreme environments possible — a four-man team climbing the big walls of Baffin Island in the Arctic Circle and a stubborn duo putting down a four-year battle with the world’s hardest alpine crack climb in the Canadian alpine wilderness of the Bugaboos.

Combining humor, insurmountable drive and sheer masochism, the climbers blew away the audience. Excited cheers, mixed with awe-struck commentary, filled The Orpheum with nearly every scene. Beautiful scenery kept the crowd enthralled, hanging on the edge of their seats.

Cole Kaplan, a senior electrical engineering major, was among the viewers on Friday night. “[The film] was a perfect mix of super intense climbing, sailing, super catchy jam sessions and it was all held together by a ridiculously goofy, light-hearted attitude,” said Kaplan.

Both Friday night showings of Reel Rock nearly sold out, demonstrating interest in the Flagstaff community.

“It’s a great yearly get-together,” Snyder said, who also commented on the rapidly growing climbing community. “We have to think about the future of climbing; it’s not just a bunch

of people hanging out anymore. It’s becoming a sport.”

Also present in the audience was Gina Richer, a local representative for the brand Voodoo Climbing.

“We have a responsibility to one another and to our environment to educate each other about our impact,” said Richer.

Arizona has large amounts of public land that calls to adventure seekers everywhere. This is especially apparent in high-traffic recreation areas. “[Reel Rock] causes people to go out and try things they’ve never done, pushing boundaries all over the world,” Kaplan said.

The production also encourages viewers to remember the roots of climbing while still pushing limits. However, the rapidly growing popularity leaves many in the dark about climbing ethics crucial to the sustainable continuation of the community.

“Flagstaff is in a special bubble where people are very receptive, but some places they just don’t care,” Snyder said.

Reel Rock brings the northern Arizona climbing community together every year.

“It’s like Christmas,” Richer said. “Every year it’s like ‘oh boy, Reel Rock.’”

Having stoked the fire for adventure in the hearts and minds of Flagstaff locals, the climbing season is officially underway. The event emphasizes the ethics of environmental stewardship and keeping climbing safe, accessible and fun for everyone.

Mikayla Khramov on acting, Playbill and following her dreams NIKI DESHAZO

mbitious. Dreamer. Loyal. Leader. Professional. Multi-faceted. Stubborn. Affable. Nostalgic.

These words describe Mikayla Khramov.

Khramov followed her heart to NAU and is now a senior. She is pursuing a degree in creative media and film with a minor in advertising.

“I decided I needed to go on an adventure and get a breath of fresh air,” said Khramov. “I said yes to NAU before visiting. It really called out to me.”

Khramov’s success and drive started with her childhood. She was blessed with a wonderful childhood that became the backbone for the decisions she has made throughout her life. Her parents were also a huge inspiration and influence on her.

“My dad was a performer, musician and composer from Russia. He lived and breathed music and worked so hard to achieve all the great things he did. I don’t think I would have the passion I do today if it weren’t for the inspiration that his work and dreams have given me,” Khramov said. “He passed away suddenly from a heart attack my senior year of high school. I know he would be proud of everything I am up to these days, and I just wish he and I could sit down with some coffee and talk about our favorite jazz albums and maybe write a song together.”

Khramov also expressed she would not be where she is in life without her mother, who acted as her support system and encouraged her to follow her dreams.

In addition to her parents’ influence, she was also inspired by Ray Bradbury, Jonathan Pryce, music and her spirituality. From these influences, Khramov developed a love for the arts. She has been involved in theatre from a young age.

“I’ve always been involved in community theater, school plays and professional productions. I was a volunteer cast member at the Festival of Arts’ Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach every summer since I was 10 years old, before leaving for college. That’s an audience of about 2,600 each night,” Khramov said. “I just grew up with that thrill of being on stage, and never got tired of it. Plus my dad was a performer and I toured with his band from a very young age.”

Khramov spent much of this past summer traveling. She visited Atlanta, Los Angeles and New York City.

Mikayla was also interviewed by Playbill while in New York, which was featured in the September issue.

Mikayla saw The Merchant of Venice at The Lincoln Center in Manhattan this summer so she could watch her all-time favorite actor, Jonathan Pryce, play Shylock in the production. She reached out to Olivia Clement, who was the Playbill writer covering the production.

“I wrote to Olivia about her write-up and thanked her for a great piece, and she invited me for an interview before I left town. We met in front of the Winter Garden Theater, featuring School of Rock the musical. She was curious why I wanted to see The Merchant of Venice and why I traveled from California to see my favorite actor on stage,” Khramov said. “We also discussed how Shakespeare addressed social issues in his play that are very relevant to this day, in this country and around the world. She was curious about my background, so I told her about my studies at NAU and how much I’ve learned since going away to school. It was pretty awesome that a shout-out to my school made the final edit.”

Although Khramov has explored many forms of art, live theater has a special place in her heart.

“Live theater is important because it is so traditional, mesmerizing and real,” Khramov said. “I haven’t done a lot of theater since switching over to film studies, but I still believe that the key to being a great actor is having the fundamental training and experience that you gain in live theater.”

Theater also offers valuable memories to last a lifetime.

“The most memorable moment in any production I’ve been involved in is the 10 to 15 seconds I soak up before walking onto the stage,” Khramov said. “No matter what performance I am in, I still get that same feeling, that same adrenalin, that I believe most actors feel when they are channeling their character. I never take that moment for granted, and I miss it when I’m not involved in a live production.”

Khramov’s love for theater and the arts led her to NAU. She entered as a business major with a minor in theatre. In her sophomore year, she took a film class as an elective and decided to double major in business and film with a double minor in theatre and advertising. During her junior year, Khramov decided she wanted to focus on what she loved. She dropped business and theater for creative media and film, with a minor in advertising.

Currently, Khramov is the president of the NAU Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda, a Peer Facilitator for School of Communication professor Toni DeAtzlan-Smith, the Brand Ambassador for The Mountain at NAU and a member of Gamma Phi Beta.

She also plays in several bands around town almost every weekend. She plays the drums with Andy See & His Swinging Jamboree and has her own band called Theone.

Khramov would like to follow her passion as a musician and go on an international tour. As for acting, she would love to star in a film with Jonathan Pryce if the opportunity arose.

She isn’t waiting until graduation to start her career, though. Even as a senior, she has already achieved success in the arts.

“I just released my first solo album under my middle name, Theone, called Empty Feelings, and I also released an EP last year with the band I have with my sister, The Nesting Dolls,” Khramov said.

“Both are available on iTunes and Spotify.”

Khramov’s time at NAU has been rewarding.

“Of course I am getting a great education, but it is amazing how many awakenings I have had since leaving home and figuring out my own sense of self here in Flagstaff,” Khramov said. “I have acquired skills I never knew I had, or could have, and have made so many important connections I know will last me a lifetime.”

Khramov offered advice for theater majors and those pursuing performance art.

“One thing I know has worked for me thus far, is to just go for your dreams, shoot for the stars, no matter where you are, because you’re the only person who can really hold yourself back,” Khramov said. “You want be an actor? Go audition, and audition again and again. The only times I have failed are when I decided to give up, because I didn’t think I was good enough.”

Now, Khramov is ready to graduate. After graduation, she wants to follow her ambitions, grow, help people and dedicate herself to her field.

“I’m still thinking about getting my masters, but I am not quite sure if that is the best choice yet,” Khramov said. “I would love to travel, play music and continue making films. My goal has always been to enjoy life, and right now I feel I am on the right track.”

IceJacks plow through Aggies MATTHEW KIEWIET

T

he NAU D2 club hockey team defeated the Utah State Aggies 3–1 Sept. 30 at the Jay Lively Activity Center. “[Utah State] played a physical game, and we still kept up with that,” said head coach Travis Johanson. “I was impressed with that.”

In a game riddled with penalties — arguably too many, as it took more than three hours to complete — penalty kills (PKs) were absolutely crucial.

“The PK is actually something we hadn’t worked on much this year,” said sophomore forward Max Mahood. “So it was good that we got to work on it quite a bit.”

NAU killed two five-on-three power plays and one five-minute power play that resulted from junior defenseman Jacob Pascale being called for fighting. As a result, he was disqualified from the game and will be suspended from the Jacks’ next game against the University of Arizona.

On the other side of the coin, executing while on the power play also proved to be the difference in the game. Both of the IceJacks’ second-period goals came on a power play.

With 18:56 left to play in the second period, sophomore Lucas Lomax scored NAU’s

first goal off of a rebound to the right side of the net in front of the crease with 17 seconds left in a power play that had carried over from the first period.

“We spend a good amount of time working on the power play,” Mahood said. “We’ve got two different set ups, so they kind of don’t know what to do or what to expect when we are out there.”

Roughly 12 minutes later, Mahood put one in the top shelf just 10 seconds into another power play. “[Freshman forward Reise] Keiffer gave me a good cross-ice pass, it almost got picked off but then the goalie stopped right in the middle of the net,” Mahood said. “I picked my head up, saw that it was wide open and tucked it up top.”

NAU’s defense rarely gave any ground to the Aggies, and when they did, sophomore goaltender Jaxson Gosnell was a stone wall. The defense has a great deal more confidence when they know their goalie can make saves, director of hockey operations AJ Fairchild remarked.

“When you want to win a game it doesn’t really matter what the circumstance is,” said Gosnell. “The saves just come by themselves.”

The D2 IceJacks travel to Tucson Oct. 7 to face in-state rival University of Arizona.
