Think baseball and crackerjacks. Chicken and waffles. Moonshine and motorcars. Johnny and June.

Starting this September, two of the Southeast’s biggest celebrations will partner to offer 10 days of high-octane, top-volume entertainment that will have fans dancing in the streets—and then perching on the edge of their seats.

It’s all part of a collaboration between the Birthplace of Country Music’s (BCM) Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion music festival and Bristol Motor Speedway (BMS). These two entertainment heavyweights regularly draw tens of thousands to the region each year, one for a music festival that honors country, Americana, bluegrass, and roots music—and all the glorious genres they have morphed into over the last century—and the other for a nationally known, internationally attended Night Race that tops the bucket list of generations of NASCAR fans.

Each event is a massive crowd pleaser, all on its own. What happens when you put them on back-to-back September weekends? You’ve got Rhythm & Racing, a merging of two storied Southern traditions that encompasses an entire region and runs for nearly two weeks.

“Everybody’s in on the party,” said Jerry Caldwell, general manager and executive vice president of BMS. “Throughout the Appalachian Highlands region, there are groups planning concerts and events that will welcome music and racing guests from around the world, and the entire region will be in high gear for 10 days straight. It’s going to be an amazing experience in a beautiful area, and one we know race fans and music enthusiasts will love.”

The opportunity to create such an experience came about in early 2019, when NASCAR announced its 2020 Cup Series race dates. For years, BMS fans and advocates had lobbied for the nation’s most popular and challenging short track to be included as part of the championship playoff schedule. That wish was granted when America’s Night Race, one of the best-attended stops on the stock car circuit, was chosen to host the first elimination race in NASCAR’s 2020 championship series.

Fans throughout the region rejoiced—but soon realized that the change meant BMS’ famed August race would have to shift later in the racing season—specifically to September, where it would fall on the same weekend slated for the 20th anniversary of the Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion.

While some planners might have viewed having to reschedule a major music festival that hosts more than 120 bands and draws more than 40,000 attendees as a challenge, BMS and BCM immediately saw the value inherent in pairing the events. Within days, organizers had welcomed the change and announced a major bonus for racing and music fans— The Rhythm & Racing Super Ticket.

The Super Ticket includes a three (3)-day weekend wristband to the Festival, as well as a three (3)-day ticket to all the races at Bristol Motor Speedway, including the Bush’s Beans 150 ARCA Showdown Series event, UNOH 200 presented by Ohio Logistics in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series, the NASCAR Xfinity Series Food City 300, and the NASCAR Cup Series Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race.

“The ability to bring two of the largest fanengagement experiences in the Southeast together is an incredible opportunity for our community,” said Leah Ross, BCM executive director. “Together, the Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion and America’s Night Race will deliver nearly two weeks of entertainment to our region for locals and travelers to enjoy, and for the first time ever, fans who are traveling long distances won’t have to choose between the two. The price of the Super Ticket is a fantastic deal, and we are thrilled to partner with BMS to offer the ultimate racing and music experience this September.”

The Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion music festival will be held September 11-13, 2020, with more than 120 acts playing on 16 stages in Historic Downtown Bristol. Headliners for this year’s Festival include Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Tanya Tucker, Blackberry Smoke, Dr. Dog, Yola, and many more. The green flag will drop on an activityfilled race week, with race week parties taking place in Kingsport and Johnson City on Monday and Tuesday, followed by the popular Food City Family Race Night at Bristol on Wednesday. The race week schedule will culminate with the Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2020.

“It says something great about the spirit of our region when two events of this magnitude can come together and create an opportunity like this,” Caldwell said. “No other NASCAR track kicks off their race week experience a whole week early with a mega music festival and nightly entertainment leading into some of the most competitive racing on the circuit, and we think the Super Ticket package strikes just the right chord for music and racing enthusiasts alike.”

For those who love to camp for music festivals and race weekends, Bristol Motor Speedway will make select on-grounds camping options available to the public beginning Thursday, Sept. 10, through Sunday, Sept. 18, 2020. Enthusiasts are encouraged to come early and set up camp in Bristol for 10 days of Rhythm and Racing fun.

Hit the trifecta of outdoor recreation, where you’ll sample some of the best hiking, biking, and paddling. Remember to leave our trails with no trace, so adventures can last a lifetime.

Day 1: Cherokee National Forest Kick off with a 9-mile round-trip hike to the Pinnacle Mountain Fire Tower in Unicoi. Afterward, relax around the campfire at Woodsmoke Campground. The drive time from fire tower trailhead to Woodsmoke Campground is only about three minutes. Guided tours are offered by White Blaze Outdoors.

Day 2: Doe Mountain Recreation Area Drive time from Woodsmoke Campground: 1 hour Travel northeast to Doe Mountain Recreation Area. With 8,600 wooded acres and nearly 60 miles of trails, you’ll have mountain views around every corner.

When you’re finished exploring, set up camp at R&D Campground, across from the mountain.

Day 3: USA Raft Adventure Resort Drive time from R&D Campground: 1 hour, 10 minutes If an adrenaline rush is on your bucket list, your next stop should be USA Raft Adventure Resort for a guided trip on the Nolichucky River. The Nolichucky passes through a rugged gorge that’s 3,000 feet deep in some places, making your trip scenic as well as exciting. After an exciting day outdoors, you can explore entertaining small towns and then stay the night in a family-friendly campground. As night falls, you can all gather around the campfire to laugh about the day’s adventures and make plans for tomorrow.

If your family loves outdoor fun and exploring new places, Northeast Tennessee is a perfect destination. To help you map out an ideal trip to the region, we’ve highlighted 10 of the area’s best activities to entertain people of all ages.

1. Hike or Bike the Tweetsie Trail For a fun and casual family outing, head to the start of the Tweetsie Trail in Johnson City.

This 10-mile path connects Johnson City and Elizabethton, offering a pleasant escape for walkers, runners, and bikers. The wide, paved trail traverses gentle terrain and passes through the charming countryside and offers excellent views of the surrounding mountains.

It’s enjoyable whether you experience one, two, or all 10 of its miles. If you’re able to bring your bikes along on your trip, it’s a safe place for kids to pedal freely.

2. Zipline at Bays Mountain Park

Bays Mountain is an enormous park in Kingsport known for its peaceful hiking trails, enlightening planetarium shows, and captivating native animal exhibits. But, you’ll find an even more thrilling adventure among the park’s 3,500 acres. On the 310-foot Flying Squirrel zipline, you’ll zoom through the trees at lightning speed. There’s no minimum age as long as the harnesses and helmets fit securely, making the Flying Squirrel an adrenaline rush the whole family can experience. If you have eight people or more, you can also try the park’s low ropes course, which includes a dozen obstacles that your family can negotiate as a team.

3. Go Sailing on Watauga Lake On the last day of 1948, the Watauga Dam was completed and the Watauga Lake was officially formed. Since then, the 6,000-acre reservoir has offered endless recreation for boaters, anglers, and water lovers. The lake is entirely within the Cherokee National Forest, leaving nearly all of its shores wooded and undeveloped. Pop into Lakeshore Resort & Marina in Hampton for boat rentals, food, and lodging. If your family is new to sailing, you can even book a lesson with the Watauga Lake Sailing Club.

4. Camp at Woodsmoke Campground Located at the base of Buffalo Mountain near Unicoi, Woodsmoke Campground is the ideal jumping off point for some of Northeast Tennessee’s best outdoor adventures. The familyowned and operated campground offers both tent and RV sites, each equipped with a picnic table and fire ring (because s’mores are a must!).

Just a short walk from the campground you’ll find the Pinnacle Mountain Tower Trail, which climbs nearly five miles to a mountaintop fire tower. Standing 40 feet high, the fire tower has an observation platform with a 360-degree view of the rolling hills of the Cherokee National Forest.

When you’re not out exploring the surrounding trails, relax and enjoy the peaceful sounds of the stream that runs through the campground.

Nolichucky River 5. Go Whitewater Rafting on the Nolichucky Don’t miss your chance to experience firsthand one of the Southeast’s most iconic rivers during your family’s visit to Northeast Tennessee. The Nolichucky is one of the last major undammed rivers in the Southeast, and a day on its wild waters is sure to become one of those stories that your family tells over and over. If all of your family members are over the age of 10, you can tackle all 11 miles of runnable water.

The full trip includes more than 25 Class II-IV rapids that race through the rugged Nolichucky River gorge, which is nearly 2,000 feet deep in some places. For a milder but still exciting rafting trip, book a full day or half day on the Lower Nolichucky, which is open to ages 4 and up. You can also book a variety of water classes with Nolichucky Outdoor Learning Institute.

Bays Mountain Park 6. Visit the Hands On! Discovery Center and Gray Fossil Site Take your family on an adventure of the mind at this science-focused museum geared toward kids of all ages. Your children will love playing with flying objects at the Bernoulli Table, building whatever they imagine at the Rigamajig, and climbing upward through the Paleo Tower. They’ll have so much fun that they’ll hardly notice they’re learning about science, too! During your visit to the center, allow time to explore the Gray Fossil Site, an active dig site that dates back almost 5 million years. While the center is technically for kids, most adults love it just as much.

7. Take a Whirl on the Kingsport Carousel When the little ones need a break from the wild outdoors, make your way to Kingsport where they can ride the vintage carousel at Pal’s Roundhouse. Built in 1956, the ornate Kingsport Carousel has been completely renovated to all of its original glory with 32 hand-carved animals. When kids see the colorful array of creatures, including a tiger, a frog, and giraffe, they’ll love choosing which animal will whisk them around and around. At just $1 per ride, they can enjoy the carousel’s magic to their heart’s content.

After taking a whirl (or two), swing through Pal’s Sudden Service to order milkshakes and fries. Pal’s is Northeast Tennessee’s homegrown burger joint chain, and its original drive-thru is still offering speedy service on Revere Street in Kingsport.

8. Bristol Motor Speedway Tour Do you have a need for speed? Book a track tour at Bristol Motor Speedway, the “World’s Fastest Half-Mile.” During the tour, which runs every half hour Monday through Saturday, you’ll walk the legendary Bristol Dragway where cars reach speeds of 300 miles per hour during races. Visitors will also get to look out on the enormous arena from the suite of Bruton Smith, who owns the Bristol Motor Speedway and seven other racetracks around the country. The tour concludes with a lap around the track, which is sure to thrill lifelong fans and NASCAR newcomers alike.

9. Birthplace of Country Music Across town, continue your tour of Northeast Tennessee’s iconic attractions at the Birthplace of Country Music. The museum explores and explains the impact that the famous 1927 Bristol Sessions recordings had on the development of country music. Guests will find rotating exhibits and artifacts along with frequent musical performances and events.

Whether or not you love country music, this heritage museum is fascinating and fun for the whole family.

10. The Lollipop Shop The Lollipop Shop in Jonesborough takes the phrase “kid in a candy store” to a whole new level. Located on Main Street in Tennessee’s Oldest Town, the Lollipop Shop features more than 400 kinds of candy along with old-fashioned toys, personalized stuffed animals, and novelty items that will delight visitors of all ages. northeasttennessee.org

1 DISCOVERY CENTER visithandson.org This all-ages science center offers fun interactive programs and exhibits that include a three-story climber, a musical Tesla coil, giant building blocks, and a maker studio, inviting guests to engineer a rocket, create a masterpiece, and uncover something new.

2 GRAY FOSSIL SITE gfs.visithandson.org The Gray Fossil Site is a place where visitors can view and learn about an active Pliocene-era fossil dig site. Scientists believe the site was formed by an underground limestone cave that collapsed and created a sinkhole. This left a vast fossil deposit that dates back approximately 5 million years.

Kingsport Carousel

4 KINGSPORT CAROUSEL engagekingsport.com The Kingsport Carousel, which features more than 30 hand-carved animals, has quickly become one of Northeast Tennessee’s most popular attractions—and not just for kids.

The carousel, which is located inside a Pal’s branded building (another area favorite), on Clinchfield St, features eccentric hand-carved animals made by the locals. The cost is only $1 to ride and operates year-round, Wednesday through Sunday.

Kingsport Aquatic Center

5 KINGSPORT AQUATIC CENTER swimkingsport.com Open year-round, the indoor area encompasses 46,000 square feet and includes three multi-purpose, heated pools, designed for recreation and instruction, including the region’s only Olympic-size pool. The outdoor area consists of a water park that includes two water slides, a water playground and a 900-foot lazy river, which is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day each year.

ANDREW JOHNSON NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE

nps.gov/anjo Make learning about history in Northeast Tennessee fun at any age with a visit to the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site. The National Park features a visitor center, museum, Johnson’s early home, the homestead and cemetery. Johnson was also the first U.S. President to be impeached and guests to the visitor center can take part in history by participating in a mock impeachment decision based on a timeline of events that took place during Johnson’s presidency.

ROCKY MOUNT STATE HISTORIC SITE rockymountmuseum.com Rocky Mount is a two-story log house built in the late 1820s, and is located on the former property of William Cobb in Piney Flats. Today visitors can step back into the year 1791 and gain an appreciation for the daily lifestyle of a frontier family as costumed interpreters invite guests into the restored house. Visitors discover the daily chores in the kitchen, barn, weaving cabin, gardens, and sheep.

The park’s visitor center features interpretive exhibits highlighting the history of this time, an Eastern National bookstore, and gift shop. It’s Bristol Baby! You can’t miss The Last Great Colosseum—Bristol Motor Speedway, which opened in 1961, and has long been one of NASCAR’s most popular tracks. It draws fans from all 50 states and more than two dozen countries to its highly anticipated April and September events every year. Bristol Dragway hosts one of the most anticipated NHRA races of the year for drag racing fans every Father’s Day weekend, the Thunder Valley Nationals.

THE ART OF STORY MEET KIRAN SINGH SIRAH

National Storytelling Festival

Kiran Singh Sirah has been surrounded by storytellers since he was a young boy growing up in England. Coming from Ugandan Indian migrant refugees in the early 1970s, family gatherings at the Sirah household were almost like mini festivals with more than 200 of his relatives.

When Sirah became President of the International Storytelling Center back in 2013, also overseeing the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, it was like second nature.

“At family gatherings, the adults would sing songs, tell jokes, and stories. They were fun, but they were also about our traditions, faith, and spanned three continents that included life in England, east Africa, and the villages of northern India,” Sirah said.

Kiran has turned his past navigations through society and racism into an opportunity to share his story with others. Inspiring others through experiences and humanity is something he also strives to do in the local community.

“Some months back I was asked to share my story at a vigil in Johnson City. For me this was about humanity. I told a story about a visit to the United States when I was 12 years old, and a kind Chinese immigrant that helped my family. I told a story about being racially attacked when I was five years old, but how my mother was quick to remind me that a kind elder white woman came to my rescue.

And, then I told a story about a man that welcomed me to this region, and helped me feel very much at home,” Sirah said. “What I did was use the art

of story to thread everything together in way that spoke a truth about how I felt about this country and this place, while reminding them that this nation’s greatest super power is its ability to be kind.”

Having traveled the world and spending time in Ireland, Spain, and Scotland, Sirah now considers himself a new Appalachian.

“

“I love these mountains. I miss the sea, and I think that will always be part of my soul. A couple of years ago I spent three days hiking in the forest and it was magical,” he said. “I discovered the beauty of these forests and mountains, and I feel a connection to the place I now call home.”

Kiran was also part of facilitating a bipartisan story circle meeting at the senate in D.C. with Senator Bob Corker’s team and members of the

foreign relations committee. This initiative led to the introduction of a Peace Bill which got signed into law by the President of the United States in 2019. With a noted list of accomplishments including an advisory member of UNESCO, being a Rotary World Peace Fellow, recognized as a United Nations “Champion of Peace” during the 2017 Geneva Peace Week, and various noted speaking engagements, Kiran considers his position with the International Storytelling Center among the best jobs in the world, and is inspired by the storytelling community.

“As the world moves faster and faster, and when I see divisions and distress in the world, what inspires me is that right here in east Tennessee, the ancient art of storytelling is being kept alive, and, that is important to our next generation,” he said.

The International Storytelling Center plays a major role in ensuring the tradition of storytelling is not lost. With future initiatives such as the Freedom Stories project aimed at African American stories across central Appalachia, Global Games, a new Kids Institute, and additional programming for the entire community, the Center has created a storytelling movement that not only spans the region, but also the globe.

“People around the world see Jonesborough, the International Storytelling Center, and of course our flagship National Storytelling Festival, as the birthplace and home of storytelling,” he said.

“So it’s time to spread the message widely, invite people home, and draw on this reputation for bigger and more impact projects.”

A recent historical discovery landed Rogersville’s Rogers Tavern a title that only seven other structures in the country can boast. William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition spent one night at the Rogers Tavern along with his wife, Julia, his nine-month-old son, Meriwether, and two servants in 1809. Clark noted within his journal his opinions of the places in which he stayed. The fact that he stated the roads were “fine” and that he had “a good fair” speaks highly of the area.

SURVIVING THE OUTDOORS MEET SCOTT FISHER

With rewarding careers in both the United States Army and in the corporate world, Scott Fisher knows what it takes to be a good leader. Combine that with his passion for helping others and experience as an outdoor instructor, and you have the Nolichucky Outdoor Learning Institute.

Fisher grew up on a farm in Southern New Jersey and is a Distinguished Military Graduate from The Citadel. Serving six years as an Army Airborne and Ranger-qualified infantry Officer, dividing his time between duty assignments throughout the southeast and Panama, Scott took second place at the 101st Airborne Division Best Ranger Competition and received the Army Commendation Medal.

Scott left the military in 1997 and went to work at IBM in Raleigh. Then, in 2002, he accepted a position with Johnson & Johnson. While there, he was the five-time recipient of the President’s Circle Award, as well as the Johnson & Johnson Leadership Award. During his free time, Scott found his passion for the outdoors continued to grow.

“I’ve been an outdoor enthusiast most of my life, having spent a lot of time outside while pursuing a broad range of activities and hobbies. I’ve been a whitewater kayak and swift water rescue instructor for the past 15 years, and a wilderness survival instructor for the last two years,” Fisher said.

In 2017, he decided to leave the corporate world to purse his passion for helping others fully experience and enjoy the outdoors by founding the Nolichucky Outdoor Learning Institute (NOLI) along the banks of the internationally known Nolichucky River.

“For more than 10 years I would ask my friends, typically while paddling on the Nolichucky River, if they felt that this region was ready for an outdoor school. I, like them, love these mountains and rivers and have an intimate connection to the places we are fortunate enough to call home,” Fisher said. “I wanted to facilitate making that accessible to others, regardless

of age, gender, ability, or any other real or perceived limitation that might prevent folks from getting out there.”

Although everyone seemed to like his idea, they questioned whether the timing was right, and if there would be enough interest to sustain an outdoors related school. When the question came up a couple of years ago, however, it seemed that something had changed.

“With the increasing recognition of our region as an outdoor destination, boosted largely by the efforts of the Northeast Tennessee Tourism Association and Northeast Tennessee Regional Partnership, along with the general increase in interest in the outdoors across the nation, it felt that now was the time,” Fisher said. “We have an abundance of resources and natural beauty that is hard to come by, and I have always felt that places our region among the very best in the country.”

NOLI is the region’s only comprehensive outdoor school, offering instruction for all ability levels in a variety of disciplines including kayaking, canoeing, water safety and rescue, survival, map and compass, wilderness first aid and CPR, conservation, hiking, and camping.

“We don’t turn anyone away due to financial circumstances.” Scott said.

“And, we routinely provide free classes to area schools and special needs groups to expose our youth early to the benefits and fun of the outdoors.”

With a team of talented and dedicated instructors, NOLI’s customers routinely come from throughout the southeast, mid-Atlantic and beyond, while many of them return for repeat visits.

“We doubled the number of customers in 2019, and plan to continue our mission of offering top notch outdoor education while expanding our class offering.”

There are also plans to increase conservation and water safety programs, most of which are conducted at cost or offered free of charge, as part of NOLI’s commitment to safe and responsible enjoyment of natural places.

Grayson recorded about forty songs in his short career, but nearly every one has become a standard of old time music.”

MEET CRISTY DUNN

For as long as she can remember, Cristy Dunn has been an artist. Progressing from crayons and markers to inks and paints, her passion for combining art with her family’s history in Appalachian mountain music is evident as you walk through downtown Mountain City.

As a child, Dunn was discouraged from seeking a career as an artist, but as the Executive Director of the Johnson County Center for the Arts and a professional artist, she is proof that following your dreams is possible.

“There is this perception that art isn’t a real career. My degree is in Mathematics, and I taught math and art for several years,” Dunn said “Then when I lost my husband, it made me realize that we only have one life, and I decided that I was going to live mine.”

Dunn has taken her talents to a much larger scale by painting murals as par t of the downtown Mountain City Musical Heritage Mural Mile, a self-guided walking trail that tells the story of the area’s history with music.

“I find the people of our region fascinating subjects for painting, especially those who work with their hands,” she said. “Authenticity is something that is important to us, and we value our roots.”

She is also able to share her passion for art, local crafters, and her hometown through the Johnson County Center for the Arts, which opened in downtown Mountain City in 2017.

Cristy’s family has called the far Northeast corner of Tennessee home for as many generations as anyone can remember.

Johnson County native G.B. Grayson recorded the earliest version of The Ballad of Tom Dooley after his uncle captured the infamous outlaw on a local creek bank. Clarence “Tom” Ashley was the first to record House of the Rising Sun in the 1920s, and also arranged the version of Amazing Grace that is now sung in churches throughout the country.

“Before the murals, our community had all but forgotten their names. I thought it was important to tell the story of our community’s musical heritage in a way that could inspire our town and people,” Dunn said.

Cristy takes pride in sharing her hometown’s history and culture due to the influence from her family.

“There was always music in the house. If there wasn’t a group jamming in the front yard or the living room, my ‘pa was fiddling on the front porch. He met my grandma playing a pie supper.

It cost him big money, but he won her pie and her heart,” she said.

Her grandpa, known as Fiddlin’ Fred Price, traveled the country entertaining audiences at noted venues such as Greenwich Village, Carnegie Hall, Wolftrap, and the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. His first album, Old Time Music at Clarence Ashley’s, was recorded in a little shack a mile from his house with Clarence Ashley, Doc Watson, Clint Howard, and a few others. A New York newspaper of the time said this group “put the folk in folk music,” and the album is listed on the National Recording Registry.

“My Mom and my uncle both took up playing.

I have three sons, and they all play. I can’t carry a tune in a bucket, but the subject matter in my paintings often includes my grandpa’s fiddle and the old homeplace,” Dunn said. northeasttennessee.org
