Lower Higgins Falls

Laurel Falls Perhaps one of the most popular waterfall hikes in Northeast Tennessee is the walk to Laurel Falls, which you can access via a 1.2-mile trail off of Dennis Cove Road near Hampton. The majority of the trail is relatively flat and easy, as it follows an old railroad bed that runs alongside Laurel Fork, while the last section of trail is a very long series of stone steps leading to the base of the falls. The area around the waterfall is perfect for a picnic and a good cool down before the tough climb back out.

Waterfal ls Whether you’re in the mood for an all-day trek, or a short hike, you can experience spectacular falls throughout Northeast Tennessee. To get you started on your journey, we’ve highlighted 10 of our favorites.

Jones Falls This 100-foot waterfall is situated between Roan Mountain, Tennessee, and Elk Park, North Carolina, and has a couple of different access points. A popular approach is to begin at the Elk River Falls parking area and hike up to the Appalachian Trail, from which you’ll take a short spur trail to reach the falls. When you reach Jones Falls you’ll see that the top section free-falls, while the lower portion tumbles into rushing cascades. The estimated length for this hike is about 7 miles round-trip, with the approach hike taking a bit longer due to substantial elevation gain.

Buckeye Falls This massive cascade is perhaps one of the most mysterious and elusive falls in the Southeast. Located a few minutes outside of Erwin in Clarks Creek Recreation Area, Buckeye Falls is often called the highest waterfall east of the Mississippi, with height estimates ranging from 475 to 700 feet. Though the hike to the falls isn’t terribly long at 3.5 miles, its remoteness means that this journey is not for the faint of heart. The first couple of miles of trail follow a path used by horses, but when this section ends, hikers must follow the faint, sometimes disappearing trail that meanders near—and often through—Clarks Creek. Many people attempt this hike and turn back without making it to the falls, but one thing’s for sure: those who do find Buckeye Falls are in for a true wilderness experience. Hiking to Buckeye Falls is considered extremely dangerous, please use caution.

Coon Den Falls There are a couple of ways to arrive at Coon Den Falls, but we prefer the 4-mile loop along the Appalachian Trail for its scenery and moderate elevation change. The glistening 50-foot waterfall is tucked away in the Roan Mountain region of Northeast Tennessee, which is known in spring for its blooms of rhododendron and a wide variety of wildflowers, including trillium. During dry seasons, Coon Den Falls slows almost to a trickle, so it’s best to experience it during rainy weather or right after. While the trailhead on Dennis Cove Road is easy to find and access, this waterfall’s densely forested surroundings make it feel surprisingly remote.

Elrod Falls Elrod Falls offers a huge payoff for a tiny hike. Located just 10 minutes outside of Sneedville, the waterfall can be accessed at the end of a gravel road off of state Route 31 between Sneedville and Mooresburg.

There’s a picnic area at the trailhead, and a 0.1-mile path will lead you down to the cascading waterfall and its two charming swimming holes.

It’s also possible to catch sight of another cascade above the main falls, but the ascent can be slippery and somewhat dangerous.

Gentry Creek Falls Get ready to get your feet wet on the way to Gentry Creek Falls in Cherokee National Forest. While this trail doesn’t have much elevation change, it’s rocky and has no fewer than 15 creek crossings along the way. The 4.5-mile out-and-back hike follows Gentry Creek and weaves through rhododendron on the way to the 60-foot falls. This impressive, two-tiered waterfall is located near Mountain City, and sits almost on the borders of Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia.

For a less-traveled waterfall experience, make your way to Erwin to visit Lower Higgins Falls. While relatively few people know about this waterfall, there’s certainly nothing little about it. The main section of the falls flows 100 feet, and you can continue on and explore several smaller falls farther up the trail. To reach Lower Higgins Falls, follow Lower Higgins Creek Road until it dead ends at the trailhead in Cherokee National Forest. You’ll walk about 1 mile along Lower Higgins Creek, with a bit of steep hiking near the end, to reach the main falls.

Margarette Falls

Margarette Falls Another of Northeast Tennessee’s most popular waterfalls is Margarette Falls near Greeneville. This trail is just under 3 miles roundtrip, and it’s a gorgeous spot to see spring wildflowers and interesting rock features. The first half of the trail follows a gravel road, and the second half becomes a dirt path, with a lovely creek in sight for most of the hike. Along the way, you’ll catch glimpses of several smaller waterfalls before reaching the main viewpoint for Margarette Falls, which is known to some as Marguerite Falls. The walk to this 60-foot waterfall is exceptionally scenic and a perfect hike for the whole family.

Sill Branch Falls Just outside of Erwin in the Clarks Creek area, Sill Branch Falls is a local favorite for its stunning rock features and fairly easy access.

The 3.6-mile out-and-back hike offers lovely streamside walking with a gradual incline. At the fork in the trail, the left path will take you directly to a gorgeous view of the falls, while the right affords a much more strenuous approach.

Cumberland Gap Wilderness Trail Waterfall Located in the Town of Cumberland Gap inside the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, the Wilderness Road Trail contains the original trail marked by Daniel Boone in 1775. It also leads to two of the park’s main attractions, Gap Creek Waterfall and Iron Furnace. An easy 1.4-mile out-and-back hike brings you alongside a stretch of Gap Creek where a waterfall spills over the trail and rushes beneath a bridge to create a great scene for photos. On the hike you also encounter Iron Furnace, where a 30-foot stone tower marks the location of a charcoal blast furnace that was used to smelt iron in the 1800s.

We’re all familiar with the popular places to eat, but what about those hidden treasures that only the locals know about?

Bristol Bagel & Bakery

Bristol Bristol Bagel & Bakery offers breakfast and brunch options. This would be a great stop for tomato basil soup and a toasty bagel with maple pecan cream cheese – a lovely pick-me-up on a cold day.

Bistro on 6th offers flavorful cuisine distinct on classics with a new twist. With a seasonal menu, your taste buds won’t want to miss items like pimento cheese-stuffed fried green tomatoes, pork bun sandwiches, trout almondine, and so many other delectable options.

Elizabethton Riverside Taphouse is a favorite hangout spot for families, featuring an outdoor patio and a fun indoor space to kick back and enjoy local brews and ciders. Join the fun with singo, trivia, or catch live music, paired with Big Dan’s BBQ (known for homemade sauces and brisket) just next door.

The Coffee Company, located downtown, serves lunch and breakfast and specializes in drinks with their full barista bar. Employees joke that the business should be called Lunch Company for how delicious the food is. After taking a stroll through town it’s the perfect place for coffee or a sandwich.

Riverside Taphouse

Johnson City Hachimi is a sushi and ramen spot that offers a taste of Japanese cuisine. Featuring sushi, rice bowls, ramen, fried rice, and hibachi dinners, Hachimi is quickly becoming a favorite among college students and locals alike.

Tommy Thai, located near ETSU, serves traditional Thai dishes. Curry noodles, fresh spring rolls, stir-fried rice, mochi ice cream, and so many more yummy dishes are guaranteed to satisfy your spicy side.

Jonesborough Jonesborough Barrel House & Tavern is a southern smoked barbeque staple featuring live music. Staying within the barbeque theme Jonesborough Barrel House serves wings, burgers, ribs, sandwiches, and event non-meat options in the heart of the historic district.

Main Street Cafe & Catering has been serving fresh food since 1982.

Specializing in soups and sandwiches, salads are also a popular menu item. You’ll want to check back often, as their daily specials often change. Located in downtown Jonesborough, this hometown shop sits in the middle of West Main Street.

Did you know that a group of owls together is called a parliament?

The Riverfront Seafood Company in Kingsport has a wonderful view of the Holston River. There are choices of both seafood and American cuisine. This local staple even offers a fresh market, where you can purchase fresh seafood to take home and prepare yourself!

Backwoods Burger, located in the downtown district, is known for over-the-top burgers where you can “feed your growl.” Founded in 2018, Backyard Burger prides itself on serving flavors from all over the world. Mac and Cheese on a burger? Count us in! The menu also includes pork rinds with homemade pimento cheese dip.

Mountain City The small town of Mountain City is known for some of the best eats in Northeast Tennessee. Folks make a day trip to town just for a

chance to savor the made from scratch dishes at La Cucina. BYOB is totally acceptable and reservations are recommended for this locally famous Italian eatery.

Another restaurant you’ll want to plan in advance for in Mountain City is Suba’s. Known for their desserts, Suba’s extensive menu ranges from perfectly prepared steaks, the best seafood in the area, pasta and chicken, to wonderful lunch sandwiches and salads.

Rogersville Located inside the historic Hale Springs Inn, McKinney’s Restaurant and Tavern offers drinks and Instagram-worthy dishes from the lunch and dinner menu. Pairing your meal with a stay at the Inn makes the perfect weekend getaway, even if you’re a local.

USA Raft’s Take-Out Bar is the newest year-round hot spot along the Nolichucky River. Now serving quick bites, appetizers, and local brews, it’s the best place to relax by the campfire.

The Hollywood Hillbilly brings a unique culture to Downtown Rogersville.

They focus on serving fresh food that is familiar yet different, along with hosting an eclectic mix of musicians in their one-of-a-kind downtown space, including a 300-gallon fish tank as the backdrop.

Brumley’s is a luxurious lounge located downtown inside the Historic General Morgan Inn. Known for its flare on historic decor, and chef-prepared meals, Brumley’s hosts one of the best cocktail bars in the region.

Another all-day breakfast (and more) stop is Maple Grove Restaurant. Ranging from a full plate breakfast or just a biscuit, this local hangout is sure to get you through the day. The crazy flavors of pancakes can range from pumpkin pecan to cinnamon apple. But perhaps they are best known for homemade pies you can only find in the southern Appalachian Mountains.

Whistle Stop is located in the nearby town of Tusculum, and is known for mouthwatering steaks, homemade soups and making you feel like home the minute you walk through the door.

The International Storytelling Center is home to the world’s foremost storytelling event, the National Storytelling Festival, which takes place the first weekend in October and draws some of the world’s top storytellers.

The Center also hosts a teller-in-residence series, as well as the Jonesborough Storytellers Guild.

Rocky Mount is a two-story log house built in the late 1820s, and is located on the former property of William Cobb in Piney Flats. Today visitors can step back into the year 1791 and gain an appreciation for the daily lifestyle of a frontier family as costumed interpreters invite guests into the restored house.

Visitors discover the daily chores in the kitchen, barn, weaving cabin, gardens, and sheep.

Steele Creek Park

Comprised of more than 2,200 acres, Steele Creek Park is one of Tennessee’s largest municipal parks, featuring more than 150 acres of developed recreational area, a 54-acre lake, and another 2,000 acres of undeveloped forested knobs.

Originally planned as a state park in 1936, the project was abandoned before completion and, in 1961, then Mayor Stacy Grayson announced plans to move forward with a massive City park. Steele Creek Park opened to the public on June 6, 1964.

Today the park is a peaceful location for both serious and casual nature enthusiasts with areas for hiking, biking, fishing, boating, and enjoying the flora and fauna that are native to the park. Paddle boats are available for rent during the summer months, and a wide variety of fish – including bass, sunfish, and catfish – are plentiful in the lake. Over twenty miles of hiking and biking trails traverse the undeveloped knobs, providing an up-close look at the native species that make the park their home.

Picnic tables, grills, and rental shelters are located throughout the park, making Steele Creek the perfect place to enjoy a leisurely lunch and a favorite community spot for family and friends to gather. Playgrounds, ball fields, and a one-mile fitness course are available for park goers of all ages. One of the favorite attractions at the park, however, is the Steele Creek Express, a miniature replica of a real steam engine that has chugged along the shores of Steele Creek Lake since the park’s earliest days. In 2019, with financial assistance from the Junior League, the City constructed a Splash Pad, another popular attraction that is the perfect area for youngsters to cool down on sweltering summer days.

For golf enthusiasts, Steele Creek offers a nine-hole course near the entrance of the park that encompasses 65 acres and is open to the public throughout the year. Those who prefer disc golf can gather at the park’s 18-hole course that offers both pro and amateur tees and nine additional holes that require more challenging trick shots in wooded areas. The disc course can also be rented for tournaments or private play.

One of the most visited areas within the park is the Steele Creek Nature Center, a two-story, 5,000-square-foot educational facility that showcases the natural history and beauty of the Southern Appalachians. The Nature Center houses live animals and interactive exhibits designed to interpret the natural history of the park and the surrounding region. Guided hikes and other programs are offered year-round and can be customized for school groups and other organizations. Gardens near the Nature Center are maintained by Friends of Steele Creek Nature Center and Park, a support organization comprised of community members, who also help maintain a tree trail featuring more than 30 different species of native trees. The area has been certified as a registered arboretum by the State of Tennessee.

MEET A FARMER: D ana Yo rk

Outdoors, like a Lo cal

Dana York’s family farm has been around longer than Tennessee has been a state. Since 1778, and now in its 10th generation as Grand Oak Farm, Dana continues with tradition while inspiring and providing space for new farmers with hopes of restoring Northeast Tennessee’s longstanding reputation with local agriculture.

Dana grew up moving around the country with her family as an “army brat,” but her summers were spent in Tennessee with her grandparents.

“I retired with 34 years of service from the Natural Resources Conservation Service, and returned to my family farm in 2013, Dana said. “When I retired, I started a consulting company called Green Earth Connection, and currently work with Appalachian Resource Conservation & Development Council to teach Beginning Farmer Courses.”

Dana’s passion for the agriculture industry is evident in her work, as she currently maintains 130 acres of Grand Oak Farm, as well as an incubation section for young farmers. She recently graduated a couple that were vegetable producers, and now hosts a veteran farmer who raises hair sheep. Since Dana runs the majority of Grand Oak’s organic vegetable and flower operation, most of the produce is sold wholesale to local restaurants and florists. She also donates to local area banks.

“Our farm was a revolutionary land grant to Shadrack Hale and the original farm was 1,000 acres. My grandson Oliver, is the 10th generation to live on the farm, which has been in many enterprises over the years including homesteading, tobacco, mule, pork and dairy production.” Dana said. “In the last three years, it has also become an incubator farm where young farmers without land come and use my equipment and land until they can build up enough capital to purchase their own farm.”

Farming is not for the faint of heart, or considered easy. Dana recalls 200 dairies in her community when she was a child, that number has now shrunk to less than five. In many cases, the cost of today’s inputs has tripled, with the producer receiving very little of the money in rising food costs. Other factors include loss of land to urbanization and the price of land for new farms, among other startup costs.

Joy of seasons, planting of crops, watching the birth of livestock, and the satisfaction of your hard work resulting in good food that is locally available to the area can far outweigh the hardships.”

A Walk Through Time Made of mountain oak and white pine beams, the wood for the original bridge structure was hauled down from the mountains by horses and mules.

The Covered Bridge is one out of two bridges in the state of Tennessee that is identified by a Tennessee Historical marker (Marker 1A 62). It is also listed in the Historic Engineering Record, as it withstood the great May flood of 1901. There are at least 8 other markers within walking distance of the bridge to take a deeper view into Tennessee history.

Park visitors can walk or bike through the bridge and enjoy picnicking or winter activities like the new ice rink located at Covered Bridge Park. In the summertime, the city of Elizabethton invites guests out to Covered Bridge Jams on Saturday nights.

COVERED BRIDGE

Creatures of Northeast Tennessee Anglers travel from far and wide to fish in our area’s more than 850 miles of streams, especially to catch trout.

Stretching across the Doe River, The Elizabethton Covered Bridge was built in 1882 and still remains a frequented destination. Visitors can walk through the bridge and enjoy activities at The Covered Bridge Park, only a stretch from downtown.

Early Settlement The Covered Bridge is located in Elizabethton which was originally known as the “Watauga Settlement.” This area was first settled in

Offering Instruction in: 1769 and lies just west of the Appalachian Mountains. Rich with history, Elizabethton is the home of the first permanent settlement outside the original 13 colonies.

The site for the bridge to be built was chosen by J.J. McCorkle, Wiley Christian, and H.M. Rentfro at a cost to the county of $3,000 for the bridge and $300 for the approaches. The bridge is said to be the oldest such bridge in existence that is still vacant for pedestrianuse, spanning 134 feet long.

TRAIL TOWNS Northeast Tennessee is home to fantastic trails that wind through lush mountains and gorgeous countryside. Tucked away in the folds of the landscape are many “trail towns” and we’ve highlighted 11 of our favorites.

Elizabethton Begin your day at The Coffee Company and swing by the 19th century Covered Bridge before heading to Sycamore Shoals State Park. The park has seen many important historical events and now features a 2-mile river trail, educational exhibits, and living history reenactments.

Roan Mountain Roan Mountain is a tiny community located in the heart of the Cherokee National Forest. On the outskirts of town, you’ll find Roan Mountain State Park, home to trout, wildflowers and the beautiful Doe River, all interwoven with 12 miles of hiking trails.

Greeneville Head to the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site and spend the day learning about the life and accomplishments of the 17th U.S. President.

If your history itch still isn’t scratched, take a drive to David Crockett Birthplace State Park on the Nolichucky River.

If you’re seeking a family-friendly destination, head to Steele Creek Park and Nature Center, which has paddleboats, disc golf, trails, natural history exhibits, and lovely gardens. If you’re feeling more daring, book a tour of Bristol Caverns’ ancient passageways and spectacular formations.

Kingsport Hop over to Bays Mountain Park to explore the animal habitat exhibits, Planetarium and Adventure Ropes Course. For even more family fun, Warrior’s Path State Park offers activities for people of all abilities—like the fully accessible Anderson Treehouse, and a hammock park.

Unicoi Lace up your boots for a 9-mile round-trip hike to the Pinnacle Tower, a fire tower that offers sweeping views of the rolling mountains. For a more leisurely outing, visit the Farmhouse Gallery and Gardens for artisanal bread, serene landscapes, and local art.

Erwin Just down the road from Unicoi, Erwin is the last stop before you’re immersed in the scenic Cherokee National Forest. Drive into Chestoa Recreation Area and enjoy roadside views of the Nolichucky River and spots for picnicking, fishing, and swimming. For a more strenuous outing, make the steep, 4-mile round-trip hike to remote Rock Creek Falls on Unaka Mountain.

Jonesborough Begin your tour at Persimmon Ridge Park, which has a full disc golf course, hiking and biking trails, and picnic areas. In summer you can also visit the nearby Wetlands Water Park for waterslides, a lazy river, and activities for all ages.

Johnson City Head to Buffalo Mountain Park, where you can explore several hiking trails with wonderful views of the city and the surrounding landscapes.

Another great spot to play is the Tweetsie Trail, the region’s esteemed rails-to-trails project that connects Johnson City and Elizabethton.

Rogersville With its 20th century brick-faced buildings, historic homes and towering trees, you’ll love perusing downtown Rogersville. Head to Amis Mill to gander at Tennessee’s oldest stone dam and lush grounds.

Mountain City For breakfast in Mountain City, you can’t beat the down-home feel and southern favorites at The BeetRoute Catering Company Coffee Shop & Cafe. From there it’s only a 5-minute drive to Doe Mountain Recreation Area, where you’ll find 8,600 acres of woodlands and 60 miles of multi-use trails.

NORTHEAST TENNESSEE Backcountry exploration of Northeast Tennessee takes us to remote areas, where you’re more likely to find a black bear. After reaching all-time lows in the Southeast in the 1960s, black bears have made an incredible comeback.

Today, bears can be found in every county in East Tennessee, from the western edge of the Cumberland Plateau to the TennesseeNorth Carolina state line. As of 2020, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency estimates 6,000 bears in the area. There are an estimated 1,700 bears in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park alone – that’s two per square mile! Tennessee is thought to have more bears today, than in the last 100 years.

Bear Safety Black bear populations in Northeast Tennessee are rising fast, almost as fast as the human population. It seems bear and man have mostly learned to coexist. The message is out that feeding bears is a death sentence, just like any wild animal. Keeping people, food, and pets away from bears actually help them survive.

Seeing a bear can be an exciting experience, but let’s keep that a positive one with simple tips. By learning more about bears and their curious nature, you can better prepare and make it a positive and safe experience for both you and the bears.

Hiking and Camping Tips When camping in the backcountry, it is important to store food away from wild animals. This not only makes a trip viable and safe, but it keeps wild bears wild. It is very important to never feed bears.

Bears can quickly learn to associate people with food, and easily become habituated to human food.

While hiking, you should always watch ahead for bears or bear signs. In their natural habitats, bears prefer to avoid humans, but will react aggressively when startled or protecting cubs. Human confrontations with bears are usually the result of a sudden encounter with a bear protecting its space, cubs, or food.

Whether on the trail or in your campsite, do not run. Remain calm, group together and pick up small children. Continue to face the bear and back away slowly, talking calmly to identify yourself as a human and not another animal. If the bear continues to approach, try to scare it away by making yourself as large and imposing as possible, and making loud noises. Carry and know how to use bear spray, which is available at many outdoor retailers and can be used to deter a charging bear.

Fun History of Teddy Bear You have heard of a Teddy Bear, but do you know the story? Back in 1902, President Teddy Roosevelt was hunting in Mississippi. After an unsuccessful day, embarrassed locals brought a bear cub to camp.

He refused, since the bear didn’t have a sporting chance. The story got passed on through the media, and the “Teddy Bear” was born.
