intering. What does it mean for you? It can be a time to slow down, unwind, pause, reflect, regroup and hopefully, find some peace. It’s also a chance at a fresh start towards all that we hope and dream for 2022.

It was last winter when our small but passionate publishing team turned an idea into a reality with the launch of Walden Life magazine and you, the reader, embraced it! Thank you, thank you, thank you! We are thrilled with the outpouring of support we have received during Year One of Walden Life magazine, including many who appreciated the salute to some of our Walden veterans in our November issue.

We can’t wait to showcase more of our wonderful community, club, people and places throughout 2022 in the pages of this magazine. We will continue to publish every other month, as that keeps everyone informed but not overwhelmed! So look for upcoming issues in March, May, July, September and November.

Meet the Board: Doug Bouck

D

oug is a natural leader who applies his professional talents in the petroleum industry to his role as board president for Concord Downs Condo Association.

Doug grew up in Willowick and graduated from Eastlake North High School. He then went on to graduate from Fenn College of Cleveland State University through their co-op program, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. After graduation, Doug joined SOHIO, which merged into BP. He became a refinery specialist for operations, design, startup and troubleshooting refinery systems. Doug spent three years for BP in England as an engineering manager. After “retiring” from BP in 1999, he served as a consultant to the industry in his specialty of refinery separations until 2017.

Doug and Mary have two daughters, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Doug and Mary moved to Concord Downs in 2009 after considering off-and-on to move from their Solon splitlevel home. When they saw the Concord Downs condo, the eight sliding glass doors facing the driving range convinced them that this was it. They were “taken in by the light and spaciousness of the view.”

Doug enjoys various aspects of photography. Check out his beautiful photo in this issue’s “Reflections” department.

He also leads weekly Bible studies at a Grafton prison for The WayOut Prison Ministry and facilitates a virtual group for Parkside Church’s men’s weekly Bible study discussions.

Almost immediately after moving to Concord Downs, Doug was talked into filling an empty spot on the board.

After a few years, he took his turn as president in 2013, and has continued to this day.

He says, “My engineering background drives me to accomplish the most that we can with the economic use of limited finances. I also try to use the experience and expertise of the other board members and association management to optimize our service to the whole Concord Downs community.”

Joel and Carrie Sacco - Concord Downs

J

oel and Carrie Sacco have discovered the joys of downsizing at Walden.

Joel lived in Bentleyville for 30 years; Carrie for 15 years.

While searching for a new home after deciding to downsize, they fell in love with the atmosphere and community at Walden.

Being avid walkers, the walking path, nature and wildlife made Walden the perfect fit for them.

The Saccos looked at numerous condo units for six to seven months before finding “the one” in Concord Downs.

Carrie says, “When you walk in, you know you know. The stream in the back and the windows made us feel like we were living amongst nature.”

They say they could not have asked for a better setup.

Their condo was already renovated, but they have slowly started making their own tweaks. Their cats, Bella and Margie, are enjoying their new home, too.

Carrie is from Austinburg, having graduated from Geneva High School, the University of Akron and The Ohio State University, majoring in business. Joel originally hails from 

Fairview Park and is a graduate of Fairview Park High School. He went on to graduate from Cornell with a degree in ecology. Following Cornell, Joel graduated from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. Joel formerly worked as a magistrate for Cuyahoga County before becoming a family law mediator. Carrie owned Select Upholstery on Mayfield Road before opening The Upholstery Shop in Auburn with her best friend. She decided to retire so she and Joel could spend more time in Florida, where they own a second home in Punta Gorda.

Carrie enjoys doing upholstery work for herself and hiking outdoors as much as possible. She has been playing tennis since elementary school and still enjoys the sport. She and Joel are starting to talk about playing pickleball.

Joel has also been playing tennis for a long time and enjoys skiing. They have met so many people on the walking path. Joel said they need to get a dog!

They say, “It took a while for us to convert to Walden, but we are so glad we did!”

Katie Eichenauer | Making Dreams Come True

love talking to people who are passionate and excited about what they do. Walden member Katie Eichenauer epitomizes those qualities when she talks about her life’s work involving children.

Katie grew up in South Euclid and graduated from Brush High School. She then attended Ohio State University, graduating with a degree in child and family studies. While working as a preschool teacher, she decided to shift gears and pursue a graduate degree in social work from Case Western Reserve University.

After completing graduate school in 2003, she married her husband, Brian. They have three children: Andrew (16), Autumn (14), and Maeryn (12). They have been Walden members for five years and enjoy spending time at the pool every summer, as the kids compete with the Walden Dolphins swim team. In her free time, Katie can be found in the fitness center several days a week. The Eichenauers also enjoy eating at the Club.

Believe in Dreams supports and inspires disadvantaged youth.

extra help. For 13 years, Katie worked for Bellefaire JCB, a child service agency providing a variety of behavioral health, substance abuse, education and prevention services.

In 2014, her uncle John DiJulius started an organization called Believe in Dreams. Its mission is “to fulfill dreams of economically disadvantaged youth who have survived non-medical adversity by providing access to enriching opportunities, connection to community and hope for the future.”

Katie originally volunteered to help build the program and then in 2017, she became the executive director.

Over 400 dreams have been fulfilled since the inception of Believe in Dreams. During the first year, the organization was able to fulfill eight dreams. Last year was the first year Believe in Dreams surpassed facilitating 100 dreams.

Recipients can be nominated by any child servicing organization and are mostly from northeast Ohio.

Dream Coordinators are social work interns from Case and Cleveland State University who are working

towards their master’s in social work. These dream coordinators work with the nominating agency and family to put together a package to impact the nominee. The dream can be anything the child wishes for, such as an experience the family can do together or a long-term experience for the child, such as learning a skill, taking lessons, or receiving a bedroom makeover. The interns assess families’ needs and then connect them to the appropriate helpful resources.

Believe in Dreams is completely funded by the community through individual donations, local grants and funds raised during three events each year: a gala, a golf outing and a race.

If you would like to get involved, Believe in Dreams keeps a database of “dream granters” who can make donations or offer in-kind services such as allowing a nominee to shadow them at a workplace. Contact michelle@believeindreams.org to become a dream granter.

Some dreams currently in the works are for new bikes, karate instruction, a skateboard, guitar lessons, a VIP Browns experience, and learning a new language.

Katie says that the best thing about working for Believe in Dreams is “bringing positive experiences to kids who need joy in their lives — experiences more affluent kids get to have all the time — and showing the kids their community values them and wants them to succeed.”

Martin Moleski | Perfecting the Work-Life Balance

tudent. Soldier. Political Consultant. Manager. Father.

Martin Moleski has fulfilled many roles in his adult life. But fatherhood is his highest priority.

A Hudson native, Martin is a graduate of Hudson High School. He continued his studies at The Ohio State University, majoring in political science. During college, Martin took a year off and enlisted in the Air Force Reserves. Martin sought further education at The University of Akron, earning his graduate degree in applied politics. While in graduate school, he worked for a political consulting firm in Hudson, assisting school levies, school boards and mayoral campaigns throughout northeast Ohio.

That work was “rewarding and challenging, but not a good lifestyle for a father,” Martin recalls.

After graduate school, Martin lived in Hiram for eight years before moving to Aurora so his children could attend its strong schools. “It is a world-class education.

Preserving the school district and level of education are important to me. That is why we are in Aurora.”

After becoming a father, Martin decided to make a career change. In 2012, he found the work-life balance he needed at McMaster Carr, a local supplier of hardware, tools, raw materials, maintenance equipment and industrial materials. He began as a customer service representative and moved up in various positions to his current role on the warehouse management team. Martin says the Aurora-based company offers him a tremendous work-life balance and he enjoys working so close to home.

Ella (10) and Elin (8) love to ride bikes with their dad.

He works primarily in receiving and helping to manage receiving operations.

Throughout the Covid pandemic, the supply chain has been disrupted, but Martin says, “It has been very exciting to be part of a company that has been able to adjust and maintain stock, all while keeping everyone safe. PPE became necessary and McMaster Carr was able to help customers get what they wanted quickly. It is exciting to be able to support customers, all while being in Aurora.”

Martin is most thankful for the fact that his company has provided a pathway for him to progress professionally while being able to spend time with his girls the way he wants to.

In 2017, Martin and his daughters, Ella (10) and Elin (8), moved to Aurora. Then in 2020, the family moved to Walden in the Claridges. Martin loved driving through Walden and knew he wanted to live in a maintenance-free condominium so he could spend quality time with his girls rather than working on a house.

The Claridges condo fits all of their needs. The Moleskis love the updated, spacious, open-concept design. Their condo was the first place they looked at and his girls immediately fell in love with it.

Martin and his daughters have enjoyed many things about living in Walden. Ella and Elin’s favorite pastimes are riding bikes all around Walden, going to the pool, and burger night at the Clubhouse. Elin recently had a birthday party at Inn Walden’s movie theater. The girls also enjoy spending time at the pool and Club with Martin’s girlfriend, Erin, and her daughter, Cameron.

Martin Moleski loves coming home to Walden. This “mover and shaker” and family man says, “Walden feels separate from the rest of the city. I can come home and be comfortable and relaxed; it is an amazing feeling.”

Bob Eidnier & Ingrid Angel | Making Love Happen

Bob and Ingrid adore spending time with their grandbabies.

“M

ake love happen” was one of Match.com’s slogans, and Bob Eidnier and Ingrid Angel did just that. They met on the dating website and now they have been married for 14 years. About meeting online, Bob’s mom used to say, “Don’t spread that around.”

They truly did spread that around because three out of their five kids have met their mates online, as well.

Bob graduated from Brush High School and Miami University. From there, he graduated from the University of Virginia Law School. This May will be Bob’s 40th year practicing law at Squire Patton Boggs, where he specializes in tax law. He lived in Lakewood and then Solon for 12 years.

Ingrid was born in Chicago but when she was 10 years old, her parents moved back to their native country of Colombia where she stayed until her early 40s. In Colombia, she was a lawyer specializing in criminal and labor law. She wanted

to move back to the United States so she came here on a scouting trip for two months. Having lived in Chicago, she knew she wanted to live in the Midwest.

Ingrid spent time in several different cities. She stayed with a friend in Cleveland, and while there, she fell in love with the city. Ingrid says the people were so nice. She had heard negative things about Cleveland at the time and saw that as an opportunity. “Cities rise,” she thought. Ingrid found Beachwood and decided to make it their home.

“It was the best decision I made,” she said. Bob begs to differ. He reminds her that it was the second-best decision she has made!

Ingrid worked for 15 years at a non-profit as director of a workforce program for families and children. Although her children were born in Colombia, they all graduated from Orange High School.

Together, Bob and Ingrid have five children: Andrew - (wife Kelly, daughter Aubrey) - Greensburg, PA Elizabeth - (husband Jeff, son John) - Mentor Tomás - Washington DC Rebecca husband Mark - Dayton Melisa - Milan, Italy If you want to see their eyes sparkle, ask them about their grandkids, Aubrey (16 months) and John (10 months).

Since Bob’s parents were both in real estate, their family’s Sunday entertainment was going to open houses. Bob remembered them talking about Walden. While growing up, Bob had moved often and appreciates all kinds of houses.

When Bob and Ingrid got married, they lived in Moreland Hills. After their kids moved out, they realized their home was too large. Ingrid always wanted to live on Lake Erie.

When Bob did an online search for a lakefront home, Walden popped up. Although it’s not on Lake Erie, Bob showed Ingrid the Walden house online. To his surprise, she said it looked pretty good. They did not purchase that home but looked at many others.

They thought, if there was one Walden in the Cleveland area, then there must be another. They soon realized there wasn’t. When they walked into the Deer Island home, they knew it was the one. Ingrid said, “The vibe was there.” The home needed renovation, but they shared a vision for it.

They purchased their home in 2015 and renovated it for a year before moving in in 2016.

They love how the mature trees give their home character

and enjoy the view from their Deer Island home. One of the things they enjoy the most is sitting on their deck and spotting all the wildlife.

They also like to spend time on the walking path and biking through Walden. Walking to the Club for dinner is another highlight of living here. Bob plays tennis, taking advantage of lessons and clinics during the summer with Tim. He has made many friends from playing tennis here. He and Ingrid also enjoy having lunch poolside. Ingrid loves to be outside and spends a lot of time gardening. They have green thumbs because everywhere you look, inside and out, you see beautiful plants.

Bob and Ingrid own a second home in Medellin, Colombia, where they enjoy spending time throughout the year. Ingrid’s mother, who also loves visiting them in Walden, lives in Colombia along with other relatives. Bob points out that Ingrid has 93 first cousins. Of course, I thought he was joking, but he wasn’t!

Those cousins are primarily in Colombia but are spread all over the world. Ingrid and Bob both enjoy their time in Colombia, where they say the people are amazing, they walk to many restaurants, and Bob goes running and plays tennis. Ingrid speaks fluent Spanish and Bob has been taking Spanish lessons for two years.

Bob and Ingrid are thoroughly enjoying their retirement (Bob is mostly retired) and are thankful to live in Walden and also for the time they spend in Colombia. Whether here or there, they are happy at home.

She explains that Walden dining is open to members and their guests plus overnight guests at the Inn. If you’re hungry for breakfast any day of the week, head over to the chic, contemporary Blue Ribbon Café at Inn Walden. On weekends, take in a leisurely, sumptuous brunch until 1 p.m.

Whether your palate prefers light and healthy or rich and decadent fare, you will enjoy new American cuisine featuring updated classics ranging from avocado toast and buckwheat pancakes to Maine smoked salmon and Challah French toast soufflé.

Normally the hub of activity during golf season, the Clubhouse slows down in the winter months so staff members can catch their breath, recharge and plan for springtime.

The dining room is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, January through March. But you can head to Club Walden for lunch and dinner on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; and for dinner only on Saturdays and Sundays. Enjoy a grilled steak, seafood, pizza, burgers, salads, vegetarian entrees, inventive small plates or hearty big plates prepared to order. Following a brief winter break after the holidays, Walden’s signature gourmet dining room, the Barn, re-opens January 18 for fine dining, Tuesdays through Saturdays, 6–8:30 p.m. Surrounded by the rustic elegance of the nearly 200-year-old dairy barn, you can savor Chef Thomas Dech’s imaginative appetizers and entrées enhanced by an extensive wine list and spectacular desserts.

Dech, a French-trained chef and pastry chef, crafts entrees like prime filet with bleu cheese crust, rack of Colorado range lamb or breast of Long Island duck (to mention just a few). Whichever menu selection you make, you will savor your memorable dining experience at the Barn.

6 #6 - EXPAND YOUR SOCIAL CIRCLE Get involved. Check with your association’s social committee for group outings, potlucks, game nights, holiday gatherings and other mixers with your neighbors. Or start your own social group for networking, fun and friendship.

Annette Branscom isn’t the official coordinator of her association’s social events, but she has stepped up to organize the Deer Island holiday gathering for the past few years. She says she is part of “a small group of people who are just trying to help Deer Island residents get to know other Deer Island residents. We all believe it’s a nicer neighborhood when you know who’s driving down the street or collecting their mail when you are collecting yours.”

Eva Wasil agrees. Having moved to a condo in Fairington a couple years ago, she was eager to meet her neighbors. So she helped to organize an outdoor wine

gathering once a month. It started out on her patio then got so big, they moved it to a central location by the association’s mail huts.

At the beginning of each month starting in May, neighbors receive an announcement flier in their mailbox then a follow-up email closer to the gathering date. Then they set up tables at the gathering spot on the appointed Friday, 6-8 p.m. Fairington neighbors each bring a bottle of wine, food to share and a folding chair (or golf cart) for seating. For six months out of the year, about 25 Fairington residents gather outdoors. When the weather gets too cold, they switch gears to a monthly Ladies’ Night Out, which rotates from one condo to another until the next May. They take December off but plan to start up again in January.

Getting to know your neighbors this way can create strong bonds of friendship and support in the best — and the worst — of times. Despite having to take a break during Covid surges, Fairington neighbors continue to stay in touch and help each other out, thanks to a genuine sense of community solidarity.

Any Walden resident can kick off a series of social gatherings with their association. Start with your association manager for guidelines and contact information. The rest is up to you!

FROM THE KITCHEN OF WALDEN LIFE EDITOR, WALDEN MEMBER AND DEER ISLAND RESIDENT MIRIAM CONNER

ONE-POT VEGETABLE SOUP Ingredients: n 3 T olive oil n 1 large red onion, diced n 4 celery stalks, diced n 1 large carrot or two medium carrots, diced n 1 medium yellow squash, chopped n 5 garlic cloves, minced n 2 6 ounces fresh tomatoes, chopped. (You can also

use a 28-oz. can diced tomatoes with its juices.) n 1 T tomato paste n Salt & pepper to taste n 1T Italian seasoning n 1 15-oz can cannellini beans n 6 C vegetable broth n 1 C dry pasta n 1 C fresh spinach (I like baby spinach)

Optional Toppings: olive oil drizzle, red pepper flakes, parsley, fresh parmesan

DIRECTIONS: 1.

I n a large, deep pot over medium heat, add half of the olive oil to heat.

2. A dd the onions, celery, carrot, squash, and minced garlic. Stir together to allow to sweat for 8 minutes to soften and release natural juices from the veggies.

3. A dd in the tomatoes, tomato paste, salt and pepper, Italian seasonings and beans. Add in the other half of the oil, stir together. Pour in the vegetable broth and stir again.

4. Bring to a boil and then to a simmer. Add in the dry pasta and simmer for 20 minutes, until the pasta is fully cooked.

5. Remove soup from heat for a taste test; add more salt & pepper, if needed. Stir in the spinach.

6. Allow to cool slightly and serve.

y kids and I love to bake together and we especially love to bake my mom’s secret recipes. She was an amazing

baker and we have tried to carry on her tradition. This time of year though, if you’re like me, you need a detox from sweets and crave healthy dishes. I like this soup because it is comfort food for the cold winter nights, but a great way to get those veggies. All the chopping will be worth it!

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2000 UNIQUE BOOKWORMS. Father Edward Estok, Director of Continuing for the Clergy of the Cleveland Diocese, will talk about “the spiritual Significance of the Year 2000,” on Sunday, January 9, 2000.

Father Ed is a longtime friend of Al and Linda Zimmerman, and both believe that his talk will generate discussion, questioning and responses that will keep people alert, regardless of one’s faith. He is a young man who is captivating, entertaining and understanding, and one who listens well to his questioners.

SPECIAL MEMBER NEWS… Rick and Jackie DePerro, children of Joan and Louis DePerro, performed at the White House on December 21st 1999 by special invitation from the President’s Staff. This was quite an honor. They must have made a wonderful impression, because they have already been invited back in January 2001!

FEBRUARY 1994 LEARN TO DANCE Country Western Style. Walden offers a 1994 Country Western Dance Workshop! Chuck and Marion Luck will teach all the popular Line Dances from 7:30-8:30 on Tuesdays. Black Jack, Shot Gun, Stray Cat Strut, Tush Push, Slappin’ Leather, Barn Dance. $6.50 per person per lesson or $30 when purchasing all 5 lessons. Come join the fun!

JANUARY 2001 DEAR MEMBERS: There is still room for you to make reservations for The Madrigal Feast on January 20th, 2001 at the Club. Several people have attended this event elsewhere and had a great time. Excellent food and entertainment, including audience participation. FEBRUARY 1998 GREENS COMMITTEE. Al Zimmerman is reporting the following improvements in our golf course: Rework the sand traps left of #13 green, left of #4 green and back of #15 green. Approximately 40 new trees will be planted around the golf course, and a horticulturalist will assist with improving the beauty of the Walden Golf and Tennis Club. Also, the sprinkler heads on the front nine will be

marked for distance to the center of the greens, and new practice tee mats will be installed before April 1st.
