FROM THE DIRECTORS The privilege of daily work in the Northeastern Humanities Center includes learning about the research of colleagues in various academic fields and seeing bridges built across disciplines and institutions, and between academy and community, as well as across cultural divides. We stand witness to the value of the Humanities as a place for reflection, collaboration, and activism. When we chose the theme for this year’s Residential Faculty Fellowship, “Inclusions and Exclusions,” led by Alisa Lincoln, Professor of Health Sciences and Sociology and Director of the Institute of Urban Health, Research and Practice, we could not have anticipated how timely this theme would prove to be. You can read in these pages the range of subjects that our fellows are researching, from museum politics to the civil rights movement, from human rights in Kenya to social problem fiction. Examining boundary setting from such a variety of points of view taught us a lot about mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion.

In a national context of division and misunderstanding, the value of the kind of inclusion that comes from collaboration becomes even more evident. Northeastern’s Humanities Center has always defined the pursuit of humanistic knowledge broadly and inter-disciplinarily. The current internal Advisory Board draws from four of the university’s colleges—the School of Law, the College of Arts, Media and Design, Bouvé College of Health

Sciences, and the College of Social Sciences and Humanities. The members of the board develop annual themes and facilitate programming that brings together people from across the Northeastern community, and the larger public, to learn about and reflect on all aspects of human culture, ethics, and aesthetics. In this year, when one of us (Lori) was on sabbatical for the fall semester while the other (Laura), a longstanding advisory board member, assumed the Acting Directorship, we were more aware than ever of the extent to which the Humanities Center is a collaborative, cooperative enterprise, a site of academic connections and personal friendships.

In fall 2017, the Humanities Center contributed to the support of talks, workshops, and exhibitions on topics ranging from gender, race, and citizenship in the 2016 election, to contemporary Jewish life in Germany, feminist ethics, and living with and writing about illness. We also expanded our program of public-facing events and community partnerships. For example, we collaborated with the Department of English, the John D. O’Bryant African American Institute, the Northeastern Black Student Association, the Office of Inclusion and Diversity, and the Social Justice Resource Center to open the 2016 academic year with a day of poetry and performance featuring the BreakBeat Poets, the group behind the anthology The BreakBeat Poets: New

YEAR IN REVIEW American Poetry in the Age of Hip-Hop. The fall also saw a collaboration with Northeastern’s Gallery 360 on a symposium accompanying an exhibition of the work of mannequin designer and Northeastern alumnus Ralph Pucci, AS’76, which brought together speakers from the Museum of Fine Arts as well as faculty members from the School of Journalism and the Departments of English and Art + Design.

In the spring, at a moment of national and global transitions, many members of our community were feeling vulnerable and in need of information. The Humanities Center organized to provide relevant expertise. The spring semester began with a spontaneous open classroom to answer questions on immigration and resettlement and a faculty workshop on “Teaching Gender, Race and Citizenship” in a new political climate. Our programs included an interfaith summit with Sikh activist Valarie Kaur, founder of the Groundswell Movement, a symposium on reproductive justice, another on syntax and the law, and NU Writers’ Week, where participants from all walks of life learned the skills and power of writing. Emory University ethicist Paul Wolpe lectured about advances in biotechnology and lessons one can learn from the myths of Frankenstein and the Golem, and Peggy Orenstein presented the results of her research on girls navigating sex. A week of Holocaust Awareness programs, featuring Philippe Sands, focused on personal confrontations with traumas of the past, and again this year we supported an educational series on security and resilience.

Turning the pages of this annual report leaves no doubt that the Humanities helps people to support each other in fulfilling basic desires for safety, meaning, dialogue, and self-expression.

We are grateful to one another for the pleasure of sharing the directorship of a successful Center this year, to our board members (named in these pages) for their wisdom, service, and good cheer, to Jenny Sartori and Ignacio Chaparro for the kind of excellent administrative support that guaranteed a full year of enlightening, well-managed programs, and as ever, to Uta Poiger, Dean of the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, and her office, for material support of our work. Fruitful collaborations – purposeful relationships – are responsible for the projects enumerated in this report.

I NC L U S IONS & E XCL U SION S H UMAN I TI ES CEN TER RE SI D EN T F EL LOWSHI P PROG RA M Creative productions, social organization, the making of canons and the making of nations, editing, and sculpting all require inclusions and exclusions. As boundaries blur or move, new inclusions and exclusions follow—a dynamic with ideological, political, aesthetic, and social implications. For the 2016-17 Residential Fellowship, the Northeastern Humanities Center fellows presented projects related to the theme of “Inclusions and Exclusions.” Fellows considered framing devices, borders and boundaries, marginalization, fences, and gatekeeping.

They discussed strategies for delimiting units of meaning; models and metaphors; histories of exclusions and remediation; issues such as literacy, citizenship, disability rights, evolutions of curricula, and particular cases for new inclusions in classical canons. What is in and who is out evolves: from schools to country clubs, from texts to communities to nation states, from disciplines to syllabi to fashion.

Fashioning Bodies: The Art, Business, and Politics of Mannequins Gallery 360 presented Ralph Pucci: The Art of the Mannequin, featuring the work of designer and Northeastern alumnus Ralph Pucci, AS’76, whose innovative designs reflect cultural trends and have been agents of change in attitudes toward the body, fashion, and individual identity.

The exhibition, curated by The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), was a thirty-year retrospective of one of the most innovative figures in the retail sector of the fashion industry. It highlighted the varied mannequin forms that have emerged from the Pucci studio and illuminated the artistic partnerships, production methods, and values that characterize this unique New York City business.

On September 15, a symposium brought together Northeastern faculty, staff, students and area experts to discuss the history and significance of Pucci’s work, concluding with Pucci, who was interviewed by Jonathan Kaufman, Director of the School of Journalism.

Crisis and Pedagogy Discussion on Trigger Warnings Against the background of a lively national debate about trigger warnings reflected in articles in The Atlantic, The New York Times, and Inside Higher Ed, Professors Marty Blatt, Gordana Rabrenovic, and Natalie Bormann introduced a community-wide discussion of the role of trigger warnings, their impact, and possible alternatives.

They presented relevant current research and considered how the trigger-warning debate is symptomatic of larger social trends and challenges.

The BreakBeat Poets Workshop and Performance Northeastern University welcomed the BreakBeat Poets for a day of poetry and performance. The BreakBeat Poets: New American Poetry in the Age of Hip-Hop is the first poetry anthology by and for the Hip-Hop generation, celebrating a break with the past, honoring diverse traditions, and expanding the canon. Three BreakBeat Poets, including one of the anthology’s editors, shared their work shaping and remixing American letters on the page, the stage, and in classroom spaces across the country.

Gender, Race, and the 2016 Election

Jewish Life in Germany Today

This panel discussion explored the impact of race and gender on the 2016 election. The panel featured Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program Director Suzanna Walters, Assistant Professor of Communication Studies Carole Bell, and Professor of Law Jessica Silbey and was moderated by Assistant Professor of Communication Studies Sarah Jackson.

This series of events, organized around an exhibit held in the International Village foyer, focused on the life, culture, and experiences of Jews living in Germany today. An opening reception featured a conversation with Rabbi Ron Fish of Temple Israel in Sharon, MA; journalist Toby Axelrod, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency’s correspondent for Germany, Switzerland, and Austria; and Northeastern Associate Professor of Architecture Peter Wiederspahn. On November 3, students and faculty enjoyed a screening of the film Ein Apartment in Berlin about young Israeli Jews living in Berlin.

CHAIM GANS Jews, Palestinians, and Israel: Three Historiographies, Three Moralities, and Three Roadmaps In his talk, Professor Chaim Gans, a prizewinning Israeli political philosopher, drew upon his most recent book, A Political Theory for the Jewish People, to outline three competing approaches to Zionism, as well as the different historiographies and conceptions of justice associated with each. He explained how these different approaches to Zionism produce different roadmaps for the future of the relationships between Jews and Palestinians in Israel/Palestine and between Jews in Israel and world Jewry.

The Land Film Screening and Panel This film screening and panel discussion explored the critical benefits of play and healthy risk-taking for all children. At The Land, children climb trees, light fires, and use hammers and nails in a play-space designed with the conviction that kids are empowered when they learn to manage risks on their own. The panel included: Erin Davis, Filmmaker; Anna Housley Juster, Child Development and Play Consultant; Peter Gray, Research Professor, Department of Psychology at Boston College and author of Free to Learn; and Marisa Luse, Campus Engagement Coordinator at Northeastern University.

Susannah Cahalan is The New York Times bestselling author of Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness, which chronicles her struggle with a rare autoimmune disease of the brain. Her award-winning work has appeared in The New York Times, Psychology Today, Scientific American, Elle, and Biological Psychiatry. She currently works as the New York Post‘s books editor and is working on a new book, Committed, expected in 2018.

The Hanson Lecture is named in memory of English department alumnus Peter Burton Hanson (SSH’91), who perished with his wife, Sue Kim, and young daughter, Christine Lee, aboard United Airlines 175, on September 11, 2001.

The rhetoric of the recent presidential campaign and election divided subjects along lines of identity that for many faculty members are central to our teaching: gender, race, citizen status, and religious affiliation. How does this rhetorical context— and the political reality surrounding it— affect our teaching? What challenges and what opportunities does it present? Dr. Adrienne Keene (Cherokee Nation) is a Native scholar, writer, blogger, and activist and the Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow affiliated with the Department of Anthropology and the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America at Brown University. Passionate about reframing how the world sees contemporary Native cultures, Dr. Keene spoke to a diverse audience of community members and Northeastern faculty, staff, and students and held a student activist workshop on “Responding to Racism and Native Justice.”

New England Interfaith Student Summit with VALARIE KAUR

Defying the Nazis Film Screening

This summit featured keynote speaker Valarie Kaur, an award-winning filmmaker, civil rights lawyer, media commentator, Sikh activist and interfaith leader who centers her work on storytelling for social change. She is the founder of Groundswell Movement, the nation’s largest multifaith online organizing community of 200,000 people. The second New England Interfaith Student Summit offered an opportunity for those involved to gather and learn around themes of interfaith cooperation, social justice, and religious literacy.

LARRY ROTHSTEIN and ARTEMIS JOUKOWSKY In 1939, Waitstill & Martha Sharp, a Massachusetts Unitarian minister and his wife, left their children behind in the care of their parish and boldly committed to multiple life-threatening missions in Europe. Over two dangerous years they helped to save hundreds of imperiled political dissidents and Jewish refugees fleeing the Nazi occupation across Europe. The film about the Sharps’ experiences was co-directed by Artemis Joukowsky, Waitstill and Martha’s grandson, and Ken Burns. Joukowsky and Larry Rothstein (Northeastern AS’71), co-founders of No Limits Media, spoke after the film and answered questions from audience members.

No Turning Back: The Past, Present, and Future of Reproductive Justice The Fourth Annual Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program Women’s History Month symposium was a daylong event that brought together world-renowned scholars and activists, including Katha Pollitt and Loretta Ross, for a discussion of the present challenges facing the reproductive justice movement, such as the recent wave of anti-choice legislation, the race and class disparities that impact reproductive health and access to care, and the difficulty of securing funding for reproductive justice work. The event grew out of the work of the Northeastern Humanities Center Collaborative Research Cluster on Reproductive Justice.

NU Writers’ Week

ANNUAL RUDERMAN LECTURE

This series brought together students, faculty, staff, and the Boston community to showcase and support the wide range of voices and types of writing present in our community. The week-long celebration of writing ranged from practical workshops to creative performances.

The week opened with a résumé and coverletter writing workshop. On Tuesday, faculty members from the Writing Program discussed fiction writing. Midweek, they presented a non-fiction panel and workshop to discuss personal essays, creative nonfiction and journalism, and nonfiction literature. On Friday, members of the NU Slam community held a workshop on performance for and with members of the public. To end the week, the Northeastern Writing Center and Northeastern Crossing presented “One Day, One Goal,” a five-hour writing event to help members of the community achieve their writing goals.

PAUL ROOT WOLPE Frankenstein and the Golem: How ancient tales can inform modern biotechnology

How do societies think about regulating and controlling new, powerful advances in biotechnology? One way is to encourage scientists to think about science as an ethical activity, to use their moral compass in their work. Paul Root Wolpe compared the ethical lessons of the Jewish legend of the Golem and Mary Shelley’s story of Frankenstein and applied them to modern dilemmas. Paul Wolpe, Ph.D. is the Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Bioethics, the Raymond F. Schinazi Distinguished Research Chair in Jewish Bioethics, Professor in the Departments of Medicine, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Sociology, the Director of the Center for Ethics at Emory University, and Senior Bioethicist for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

PEGGY ORENSTEIN Girls and Sex: Navigating from Shame and Regret to Integrity and Joy Peggy Orenstein, author of New York Times bestsellers Waiting for Daisy and Cinderella Ate My Daughter, spoke about her most recent book, Girls & Sex: Navigating the Complicated New Landscape. To an audience of over a hundred students and faculty, she analyzed the responses to the National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior and described how sex and sex education reproduce gendered inequalities for girls in the U.S., exemplified in the “orgasm gap.”

An Evening with 2016 MacArthur Fellow, Poet and Playwright CLAUDIA RANKINE Considered to be one of our finest living poets, Rankine is among the most prominent and politically engaged, with a wide audience for her poetry. Rankine is using her MacArthur Genius Grant to develop the Racial Imaginary Institute, a hybrid presenting space and think tank that will provide space for artists, writers, scholars, and performers to research and explore how the structure of white supremacy influences American culture. Rankine read and discussed her poetry before a full, rapt, and enthusiastic audience.

The Syntax of Justice: Law, Language, Access and Exclusion

Connected Futures: Next Generation Questions for a Just World

At this day-long interdisciplinary conference at the intersection of law and linguistics distinguished legal experts and linguists considered how language can lead to exclusion and injustice and presented research on how to expand access to justice. The day featured nine presenters and fifteen commentators and respondents, including nine students.

Specialists gathered from Seattle, Detroit, and New York with local participants from Northeastern, UMass Amherst, Boston University, Harvard, and MIT. The keynote speaker, the Honorable Richard Posner, spoke by live video link from Chicago, where he sits on the US Court of Appeals, 7th Circuit. A set of conference presentations will be developed into articles and published by the Journal of Legal Education, including one article by students.

Our future human existence will be shaped by the invention, distribution and commercialization of new forms of machines, buildings, labor opportunities and everyday needs, such as energy. This conference brought together those working and doing research at the intersection of law, business, technology, creative design, and advocacy.

The conference featured keynote speaker Sarah Jeong, a lawyer and contributing editor at Vice Motherboard, the author of The Internet of Garbage, and a writer for The Atlantic, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Verge, Forbes, The Guardian, Slate and WIRED, among other publications.

Chanting the Word of God: Cantillation in the World’s Religious Traditions

Highly Fluorinated Compounds – Social and Scientific Discovery

The brainchild of Music Professor Joshua Jacobson, this day-long symposium on cantillation (the ancient practice of chanting sacred scripture, as practiced in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) featured scholars, practitioners, and students from these three faith traditions, who came together for sessions that addressed and shared theoretical and performance issues. The symposium concluded with an evening concert, open to the general public, featuring Dünya, the acclaimed world music ensemble.

The Northeastern University Social Science Environmental Health Research Institute (SSEHRI) hosted Highly Fluorinated Compounds – Social and Scientific Discovery, a two-day conference addressing the social, scientific, political, economic, and environmental health issues raised by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs).

Scientists, community advocates, government officials, state legislators, journalists, environmental advocates, lawyers, and students convened to share their experiences addressing PFAS contamination throughout the country. The nearly 180 attendees represented a wide range of organizations and activists.

World History Association 26th Annual Conference Highlights of The 26th Annual World History Association (WHA) meeting at Northeastern included an opening reception with remarks from World History Association President Rick Preeti Gulati, winner of the Warner, Social Sciences and WHA World Scholar Fund and President Rick Warner Humanities Dean Uta Poiger, and keynote speaker John Thornton.

Many sessions addressed the conference theme, The Atlantic World and Food in World History; others ranged widely, from pedagogy to Boston-specific history.

The app Guidebook, a new addition to communications, afforded up-to-date information at people’s fingertips. With record numbers in attendance, the conference included an interactive Cooking World History evening at the Xhibition Kitchen at Northeastern.

Northeastern University’s commitment to remembrance and awareness of the Holocaust is long and deep. Since 1977, the University has hosted an annual week-long series of events dedicated to remembering the Holocaust. The Holocaust Awareness Committee was organized in 1991, made up of Northeastern students, faculty, and staff of various religious and ethnic backgrounds. The Committee’s mission is to publicly remember the Holocaust each year, not only as historical fact and a memorial to its millions of victims but also as a warning that the horrors of the past must never be repeated..

Holocaust Awareness Week is presented by the Northeastern Humanities Center and College of Social Sciences and Humanities in partnership with the Holocaust Awareness Committee.

This year’s events focused on the theme of “Personal Confrontations With the Past.” Events opened on January 23 with Northeastern’s Holocaust Commemoration, featuring Gideon Klein Scholar Alison Campbell, who presented “The Portraitist: Wilhem Brasse and Photography Ethics in Auschwitz,” followed by Rose Zoltek-Jick, Teaching Professor of Law, who spoke on “The Search for Meaning: Survivors’ Children and their Choice of a Life in the Law.”

On January 24, the Philip N. Backstom, Jr. Survivor Lecture Series featured Aron Greenfield. Born and raised in Szczakowa, Poland, Greenfield was 13 years old when Germany invaded Poland. His family was split up; some were forced to live in a ghetto, sharing space with six or seven other Jewish families, while others were transported to concentration camps. Greenfield lived in the ghetto with his mother and sisters until the Nazis took him and his sister Sarah to a concentration camp. Aron and Sarah endured life in nine different concentration camps before Allied troops liberated them. Greenfield and his sister, the sole survivors of their family, resettled in Massachusetts a few years after their liberation. Aron now resides in Norwood, where he and his wife manage Brenner’s Children Shop.

This year’s Bill Giessen Film Series featured What Our Fathers Did: A Nazi Legacy, a film written by human rights lawyer Philippe Sands, Professor of Law and Director of the Center on International Courts and Tribunals at the University College London. What our Fathers Did details the relationship between Niklas Frank and Horst von Wächter, the sons of high-ranking Nazi officials, and Sands, whose family came from the area in which the elder Frank and Wächter carried out mass killings. The three men travel across Germany and Poland to confront their families’ pasts and explore the meaning of inherited guilt.

The screening was followed by a powerful Q&A with Sands.

On January 26, Philippe Sands delivered the 25th Annual Robert Salomon Morton Memorial Lecture to a packed audience of Northeastern faculty, staff, and students and members of the Boston community.

Speaking on “East West Street: A Personal Account of Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity,” he interwove the histories of the two men who developed the legal concepts of “genocide” and “crimes against humanity” with the story of his own grandfather, all of whom came from the same region variously controlled by Poland, Ukraine, the Soviet Union, and Germany.

The Robert Salomon Morton Memorial Lecture is sponsored by the Gustel Cormann Giessen Memorial Fund and the Robert S. Morton Lecture Fund at Northeastern to honor the memories of Northeastern Professor Bill Giessen and Robert Morton. Giessen, a German who lived through the Nazi years, established the lecture to honor Morton, a Jewish survivor from his hometown who became a close friend when they both resettled in Boston.

The Gideon Klein award memorializes Gideon Klein, brilliant pianist,Philippe composer,Sands and mentor, who died in Terezin in 1945.

The award was established by Professor Bill Giessen in memory of his mother, Gustel Cormann Giessen.

C O L L A BOR AT IVE R E SEARCH CLU STERS These Research Clusters bring together scholars and practitioners from different disciplines, both within and beyond the Northeastern University community, around a shared concern. This interdisciplinary program facilitates productive discussions and collaborations among the participants, with a view toward the development of joint projects, conferences, publications, and/or major grant applications.

Crisis and Pedagogy – Teaching about Conflicts and Mass Atrocity Visual representations of atrocity are at once integral to and highly contested means of understanding conflicts, especially in the classroom. This research cluster explored impacts on students of world crises and shared cross-disciplinary pedagogic strategies for teaching conflict.

In addition to considering how to use atrocity imagery in teaching and how to respond to vicarious trauma when students bear witness to conflict and violence, participants also shared ideas about how to teach off campus, to integrate evidence-based teaching, and to teach about conflict in diverse classrooms, considering race, ethnicities, gender, and class.

The cluster hosted a screening of When Elephants Fight and a conversation with activist and film producer, JD Stier. The second speaker was Leanne Sims, a visiting scholar in the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program at Northeastern from the University of Hawaii, who presented on her work in a women’s prison in Hawaii. She explored some of the ethical conundrums of being a facilitator in a space where the writing class can resemble an emergency room, and one faces the dilemma of which wound to address first.

The Digital Feminist Commons: Fostering Feminist Methodologies in the Digital Humanities With NULab, this cluster sponsored a panel on Digital Feminisms, featuring Jacqueline Wernimont, Moya Bailey, Gillian Smith, and Carla Brodley, who discussed digital feminist methodologies. Wernimont also facilitated a workshop on building digital feminist communities, in which she shared advice on how to collaborate across disciplines and backgrounds, building on her experience as a digital scholar who is at the forefront of a number of interdisciplinary feminist, digitaloriented organizations (such as HSCollab, HASTAC, and FemTechNet).

Collective Resilience, Trauma and Recovery This research cluster examined community resilience and collective trauma in various contexts, such as preparing for and recovering from natural disasters brought on by the rapid pace of environmental change, strengthening against terrorist attacks, recovering from war and civil conflicts, and countering the community level effects of chronic, pervasive neighborhood violence. The goal of the research cluster was to share and draw upon theoretical

The Future of Global Reproduction: Technology, Law, Religion, Art and empirical research from different disciplines to better define collective trauma and create policy frameworks for building resilience, addressing collective trauma, and promoting recovery in these diverse contexts. In fall 2017 the cluster will share findings on the effects of trauma on children in poverty and how this socioeconomic status curtails their friendships.

The Plain English Jury Instruction Project: Identifying and Addressing Exclusion in the Justice System Comprehending language is a rich area of psycholinguistic inquiry, and researchers have been working to identify the factors that facilitate or impede language processing.

These findings have theoretical significance in understanding the human language mechanism, but they also have important implications for real-life contexts, which have not been widely pursued. This cluster created a two-day conference titled “The Syntax of Justice: Law, Language, Access & Exclusion” to translate psycholinguistic findings into practical, implementable action in the legal arena.

This cluster met over the course of the year to discus topics related to reproductive justice and freedom through various lenses and theoretical frameworks with the primary goal of providing an interdisciplinary, feminist take on global reproduction. They shifted focus from the “future” of reproduction to the current political moment. The work culminated in a day-long symposium of academics and activists in dialogue with one another and a full-to-capacity audience, “No Turning Back: The Past, Present, and Future of Reproductive Justice.”

The Sustainable Humanities Building on the 2015 Green City Spaces Colloquium, the primary goal of this research cluster was to integrate methods of humanistic inquiry more fully into the sustainability research and educational mission at Northeastern.

Participants asked what humanistic disciplines – here philosophy, English, and history – could contribute to emerging and foundational questions in the sciences and examined successful models that might inform a future NU program. Participants located scientific researchers who had some exposure to the humanities – and who brought this experience to bear upon debates within their subsequent field of research.

Founded in 2008, the Northeastern Humanities Center supports faculty and student research in the humanities and social sciences; facilitates collaboration across disciplines; and presents humanistic and social scientific research to the wider university community and the general public. Through working groups, forum discussions, symposia, seminars, workshops, informal dialogues, conferences, and joint projects, the Center supports a wide-ranging interdisciplinary exchange of ideas in an atmosphere of respect for different perspectives, experiences, and expertise. By offering various opportunities for engagement with art, literature, philosophy, history, and social and political formations, the work of the Humanities Center strengthens the foundation from which we can respond meaningfully to one another and the needs of our world.
