LA INTRODUCCIÓN En esta antología hay alegría y tristeza, realismo y fantasía, emoción y reflexión. Esta antología provee una manera de conocer a una poesía madura y coherente, profunda y única, escrita por los judíos de América Latina. Aquí se conocerá la producción de trece poetas, de la enorme creatividad judía dispersada por la inmensidad de Latinoamérica y además por EEUU e Israel. Incluye nuevas versiones de historias bíblicas, poemas de amor y de odio, lamentaciones sobre el Holocausto, recuerdos de infancias judías. Aparecen rabinos y nazis, judíos observantes y judíos laicos, judíos asquenazíes cuyos antecedentes inmigraron de Rusia y el este de Europa, y sefardíes cuyos antecedentes inmigraron de Turquía, Grecia, Siria y el norte de África.

La cultura judío-latinoamericana es, como diría Ricardo Feierstein, una cultura mestiza, influida por el ambiente hispano y al mismo tiempo, fuertemente inspirada por la mentalidad y las tradiciones judaicas.

La colección misma reúne poesía de trece poetas, algunos que muestran el interior del alma o meditan sobre los símbolos y prácticas del judaísmo, otros que protestan los crímenes antisemitas y los horrores del Holocausto y otros más que alaban las ciudades y campos de Latinoamérica. Emplean una constelación de estilos poéticos, inspirados por los grandes poetas latinoamericanos—Rubén Darío, César Tiempo, Pablo Neruda y Alejandra Pizarnik, mientras otros adoptan el neo-barroco o las tendencias herméticas de los principios del siglo veintiuno.

En esta poesía, los temas que predominan son la identidad y la memoria; las familias judías; la religión judía—sus costumbres y particularidades; la historia judía—en particular, la época de la Biblia; la inmigración a la América Latina; las dictaduras latinoamericanas, especialmente la última dictadora en Argentina; el Holocausto; y el Estado de Israel. ***** Las traducción de los poemas es el resultado de una colaboración de más de veinte años entre Stephen A. Sadow y J. Kates. Especialista en la literatura y la cultura judío-latinoamericanas, Sadow elige los poetas y los poemas. En general, favorece a poetas cuyas obras son poco traducidas y merecen ser conocidas por lectores del idioma inglés. Él los traduce literalmente al inglés. Kates, un destacado poeta norteamericano, pule los traducciones de Sadow, reemplanzado palabras y frases con otras que siguen las normas y la sonoridad de la poesia escrita en inglés. Después 4

los dos se reúnen, discutiendo y aún disputando cada palabra y frase.

INTRODUCTION This anthology is filled with joy and mourning, realism and fantasy, emotion and reflection. The poetry in this volume is mature, profound and unique. It is a demonstration of the enormous creativity possessed by Jews dispersed over the vastness of Latin America, and also in the United States and Israel. In spite of the fact that many of these poets have lived through populist governments, dictatorships, anti-Semitism, endemic economic and political crises, they have continued to produce extraordinary literature and art.

Theirs is a mestizo culture, as Ricardo Feierstein would say, influenced by their Hispanic surroundings, and at the same time, strongly tied to Jewish traditions and ways of thinking. Included here are new versions of Biblical and Talmudic stories, poems of love and of hate, lamentations for the losses of the Holocaust, memories of Jewish childhoods. The selections contain rabbis and Nazis; observant Jews and non-believers; Ashkenazi Jews whose families emigrated from Russia and Eastern Europe; and Sephardic Jews whose families emigrated from Turkey, Greece, Syria, and North Africa.

Some of these poets write about very private things, many meditate on the symbols and practices of Judaism; others protest anti-Semitism and the horrors of the Holocaust; and yet others write in praise of the cities and countryside of Latin America. They employ a constellation of poetic styles, some inspired by the greats of Latin American poetry—Rubén Darío, César Vallejo, Pablo Neruda, and Alejandra Pizarnik; others look to the neo-baroque and the hermetic tendencies of the twenty-first century.

In this poetry, the predominant themes are: identity and its corollary, memory; the Jewish family; the Jewish religion as practiced in Latin America—its customs and peculiarities; Jewish history—in particular, the Biblical period; the waves of immigration to Latin America; the many dictatorships—in particular the last dictatorship in Argentina; the Holocaust; and the State of Israel. ***** The translation of these poems is the result of more than twenty years of collaboration between Stephen A. Sadow and J. Kates. A specialist in Jewish Latin American literature and culture, Sadow chose the poets and the poems. In general, he favored poets whose works have been have been translated rarely or not all and that deserve to be known to readers of English. He created a literal translation of the poems. Kates, a well6

respected American poet, refined and reworked Sadow’s translations, substituting words and phrases with others that better fit the norms and resonance of poetry written in English.

Then, the two got together to discuss and even debate the choice of every single word and phrase. CÉSAR TIEMPO Argentina, 1906-1980

CÉSAR TIEMPO (1906-1980) fue poeta, escritor, autor teatral, guionista cinematográfico, y periodista. Con el nombre de Israel Zeitlin, nació en Ucrania, y de bebé fue llevado a Buenos Aires. En 1924 obtuvo la ciudadanía argentina. Formó parte del Grupo de Boedo. En 1930 obtuvo el Premio Municipal de Poesía. Recibió el Premio Nacional de Teatro. En 1945 ganó el Premio Municipal al Mejor Libro Cinematográfico. Entre 1973 y 1975 se desempeñó como director del Teatro Nacional Cervantes.

Entre sus obras teatrales destacan Pan criollo y El lustrador de manzanas. Escribió sobre la condición judía y porteña. Libro para la pausa del sábado, Sabatión argentino, y Sabadomingo son algunos de sus poemarios. ***** CÉSAR TIEMPO (1906-1980) was a poet, writer, playwright, screenwriter, and journalist. Born Israel Zeitlin, in the Ukraine, he was brought to Buenos Aires as an infant. In 1924, he became a citizen of Argentina. He was a member of the Boedo Writers Group. In 1930, he won the Municipal Prize for Poetry. In 1945, he won the Municipal Prize for Best Screenplay.

Between 1973 and 1975 he served as director of the Cervantes National Theatre. Among his plays are Pan criollo y El lustrador de manzanas. He wrote sensitively about the Jewish community of Buenos Aires. Libro para la pausa del sábado, Sabatión argentino, and Sabadomingo figure among his books of poetry.

ARENGA EN LA MUERTE DE JÁIM NAJMAN BIÁLIK ¿Qué otra preocupación que la del día presente puede tener un pueblo que se arrastra en sus tinieblas y en sus abismos?

Biálik El 5 de Julio la Associated Press dio la noticia al mundo: falleció en Viena Jáim Najman Biálik.

Pasaron veinte días y en la misma ciudad ultimaron a Dollfuss, el “Millermetternich”. ¡Cuidado con los poetas cuyos puños golpean sobre las mesas de los verdugos!

Los diarios de la colectividad pudieron publicar la noticia en “Sociales” junto a la crónica de la fiesta con que la familia Barabánchik celebra la circuncisión de su vástago.

Tengo un corazón violento y una voz áspera.

Cruzo la calle de la judería con mi rencor y mi dolor a cuestas.

Hermanos de Buenos Aires: nuestro más alto poeta ha muerto.

Como en los Salmos Dios le ciñó de fuerzas e hizo perfecto su camino.

Minkowsky fue la lágrima, Biálik la imprecación.

Y ambos se pudrirán bajo la tierra frente a los ojos ciegos de la noche tremenda.

Hoy en el “Internacional” hay pescado relleno y un buen stock de doctores para vuestras pobres hijas lánguidas. ¿Quién se acuerda de las masacres de Ukrania, de la tempestad delirante de los pogroms, cuando los juliganes violaban a vuestras madres y estabais en los sótanos temblorosos e inútiles como la luz que lame los espejos?

Biálik clamó, tronó sobre las negras aguas y su risa iracunda corrió como un viento loco sobre las aldeas.

HARANGUE ON THE DEATH OF CHAIM NACHMAN BIALIK How can a people who drag along in their own darkness and their own depths think about anything other than the here and now?

Bialik On July 5th the Associated Press informed the world: Chaim Nachman Bialik had died in Vienna.

And twenty days later in the same city they shot Dollfuss, the “Millermetternich.”

Watch out for poets who pound their fists on the executioner’s tables!

Community newspapers managed to insert a note on the society page next to the account of a party thrown by the Barabanchiks for the circumcision of an offshoot.

I have a violent heart and a raspy voice.

I walk the crossroads in Jewish neighborhoods, carrying rancor and pain on my back.

Brothers of Buenos Aires: our greatest poet has died.

As in the Psalms.

God girded his strength and perfected his way.

Minkowsky was the teardrop, Bialik the imprecation.

And both rot under the earth facing the blind eyes of the terrifying night.

A sky in shirtsleeves runs over roof-tiles.

Peddlers go on with day-night games of dominoes in cafes.

Middle-class gentlemen, you break all Ten Commandments and show up on the Sabbath with your blackbound books touching them along their figured spines to make them run off like cats, I have seen you in the shining temples — distinguished like bluebloods in luxurious chains — wearing high hats and taleisim of pure silk — with a bribe for God, who knows you better than your own employees.

Chaim Nachman Bialik has died.

Today in the “The International” they serve stuffed fish and a good stock of doctors for your poor languishing daughters.

Who remembers the Ukrainian massacres, the feverish thunder of the pogroms, when hooligans raped your mothers and you huddled in cellars, afraid and helpless like the light that licks mirrors?

Bialik cried out, thundered against the black waters and an angry laughter ran like a mad wind through the hamlets.

“The people is like a withered grass, and they are become like a dry stick.”

And there were young men who learned to rouse themselves like wolf cubs And their sharp teeth lacerated our humiliation.

Chaim Nachman Bialik has died.

The junk dealers go on smiling in the seaports of their pandemonium.

The Lacroze streetcars are as green as ever.

Cast your bread on the waters, Ecclesiastes says.

TEODORO DUCACH (1928-2002) nació en Córdoba, Argentina. Se radicó en Israel a principios de 1949 adonde inmediatamente llegó en los marcos del MAJAL (servicio de voluntarios del exterior al Estado de Israel).

Periodista de profesión, Ducach trabajó para medios de comunicación en Israel e Hispanoamérica. Desde 1974, ejerció de corresponsal del prestigioso diario Excelsior de la ciudad de México en Israel y en el Medio Oriente. Teodoro Ducach escribió poesía desde muy joven. Ya setentón, publicó dos poemarios: Interiores (1994) y Secuencias (1998). Sus poemas a la vez nostálgicos y profundos tratan su lugar de nacimiento, Cordoba; el amor; y la experiencia de vivir en un lugar tan dominado por su propia historia como es Israel. ***** TEODORO DUCACH (1928-2002) was born in Cordoba, Argentina. He settled in Israel in early 1949 and immediately joined MAHAL (a volunteer military unit made up of non-Israeli citizens). A journalist by profession, Ducach worked in the Israeli and Latin American media. From 1974 on, he served as the Israeli and the Middle East correspondent for the prestigious Mexico City newspaper Excelsior. Ducach wrote poetry from the time when he was very young. In his seventies, he published two books, Interiores (1994) and Secuencias (1998). His poems are at once nostalgic and deep. They focus on his birthplace, Cordoba; love; and his experience living in Israel, a place so dominated by its own history.

INTIFADA Con el filo de la bayoneta quise pintar los horizontes de un imperio hasta que me vi resistido por la piedra angular del futuro estado palestino.

El cielo de Gaza se cubrió de salvaje humareda Cuando el soldado, amagado, abrió fuego.

La sangre que manaba inundó canales incrustados en mis venas que estallaron en las neuronas de mi conciencia.

Niño y mujer caían en esa calle Mancillada con abyecciones.

Si Gaza pagaba tributo a la muerte Yo quemaba mi último resabio de vida. Éramos hermanos gemelos aunque irracionales y asimétricos seres librando una guerra estéril.

Y aquí, en medio del fragor del combate donde enemigos se abatían entre cuerpos, pájaros y esperanzas, me puse a cavilar: ¿Por qué el curtido, sabio y bíblico pueblo, jamás pensó en el filosófico y universal principio, de que la victoria no da derechos?

INTIFADA With the blade of a bayonet I wanted to mark the horizons of an empire until I saw myself resisted by the sharp stone of the future Palestinian state.

The Gaza sky was overcast with a savage smoke when the beleaguered soldier opened fire.

The blood that flowed flooded the clogged channels of my veins and exploded in the neurons of my conscience.

Child and mother fell in that street stained with degradation.

If Gaza was paying its tribute to death, then I was aflame with a revusion from life.

We were twin brothers although irrational and asymmetric beings waging a sterile war.

And here, in the middle of the uproar of combat where enemies cut one another down among bodies, birds and hopes, I began to reflect: Why has a seasoned, wise and biblical people never thought of one universal principle of the philosophers, that victory imposes obligation?

RWANDA Apathetic they walk they clog inhospitable paths like children lost in the woods at night sunk in grotesque nightmares.

Black lives mowed down slip away along the river stumbling to the immense and silvery lake.

Breathless, the moon recounted the odyssey with its horns, this irresistible march of exiled beggars, refugees from hate and vengeance.

Thin-limbed fleeing victims of cruelty walk along bewitched roadways.

The dessicated bellies of mothers in agony bring lifeless fetuses to light.

Little black figures in the distance are walking, walking along in full daylight, like mechanized puppets humiliated by the keepers of live animals.

No single vapor rises to the hooded, ungrateful heaven, the African structure cracks apart, decays like a woodworm.

DESAPARECIDOS Treinta mil fundadas razones tienen las madres-abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, para montar en cĂłlera y embestir la caballada federal.

Treinta mil sobradas razones tienen para marchar sonĂĄmbulas a la Casa Rosada formando una alfombra de trĂŠmulas y amarillentas flores peregrinando a panteones, catedrales y sinagogas, prender el mechero de la protesta e iluminar vestigios de sombras y huesos de los desaparecidos.

A la infame masacre, madres-abuelas de Plaza de Mayo responden con lamentos que vuelan como polvo llevado por el viento.

THE DISAPPEARED Thirty thousand well-founded reasons cause the grandmothers-mothers of the Plaza de Mayo to assemble in their wrath and take on the thick-headed federal horse-herd.

Thirty thousand shadowy reasons cause these sleep-walkers, obsessed, to march in front of the Pink House forming a carpet of tremulous and yellowish flowers making their pilgrimage to mausoleums, cathedrals and synagogues, to kindle the flame of protest and illuminate the remains of the shadows and bones of the disappeared.

To the vile massacre grandmothers-mothers of the Plaza de Mayo answer with lamentation that flies like dust on the wind.

ROSITA KALINA Costa Rica, 1932-2005

ROSITA KALINA (1932-2005) nació en San José de Costa Rica. Recibió su licenciatura en literatura inglesa de la Universidad de Costa Rica. Enseñó el inglés al nivel secundario y ayudó en la fundación de la Escuela Secundaria de Santa Ana de San José. De 1965-1970, vivió en los Estados Unidos, trabajando por el Johnson County Health Department en Iowa City Iowa. Regresó a la Universidad de Costa Rica donde enseñò el inglés.

Kalina publicó mucha ficción corta en los suplementos literarios de La Nación, un periódico de San José, para el cual también escribió lcrítica social. A menudo, contribuyó a Herencia judía, una revista judía de Bogotá, Colombia. En 1988, fue otorgada el Premio Nacional de Poesía por su obra Los signos y los tiempos. En su poesía, exploró temática judía religiosa y existencial en obras como Detrás de las palabras (1983), Cruce de niebla (1987), and Mi paz guerrero (1998). ***** ROSITA KALINA (1934-2005) was born in San José, Costa Rica. She graduated from the University of Costa Rica with a degree in English literature. She taught English at the high school level and helped to found the Santa Ana High School in San José. From 1965 to 1970, she lived in the United States, working for the Johnson County Health Department in Iowa City, Iowa. She returned to the University of Costa Rica, where she taught English. Kalina published much short fiction in the literary supplements of La Nación, a newspaper in San José, for which she also wrote social criticism. She often contributed to Herencia judía, a Jewish journal in Bogotá, Colombia. In 1988, she was awarded the Premio Nacional de Poesía (National Poetry Prize) for her Los signos y los tiempos. In her poetry, she explored Jewish religious and existential themes in works such as Detrás de las palabras (1983), Cruce de niebla (1987), and Mi paz guerrero (1998).

PUNTA LEONA al Lic. Moisés Fachler La visión del mar se me torna beatífica al unirse con el bosque.

Vuelan en formación las gaviotas, leves, desvelando a los pececillos dormidos, coloreados por el vaivén del mar ora azul, ora verde esmeralda.

Dulce y misterioso, el bosque.

Azuladas, las palmeras se reúnen en enjambre con los cedros y los malinches centenarios.

En ese borde único se pierden arena y cielo en cópula amorosa de encuentros inmortales.

Es reverdecer un génesis siempre vigente, que jamás muere ni se desgasta con los años.

No pasa el tiempo. Se detiene. ¡Es revelación!

Trazó su ascendencia por parte de su madre de judíos conversos que nunca salieron de España. Después de leer intensamente el Viejo Testamento y sus comentarios y en particular los libros místicos de la Cabala, se convirtió formalmente al judaísmo. Por muchos años, Muñiz-Huberman ha sido profesora de literatura comparada en la Universidad Autónoma de México. Es escritora de numerosas novelas como La guerra del unicornio (1983), El mercader de Toledo (1999), y El sefaradí romantico: la azarosa vida de Mateo Aleman II (2005). Es autora de muchos libros de poesía, entre ellos El ojo de la creación (1992) y La sal en el rostro (1998). Sus temas predilectos son la creación y la destrucción, la unión de opuestos, el centro de la existencia, y más recientemente, el exilio como un estado de vivir. Escribe con gran cuidado, midiendo cada palabra y haciendo caso de sus sonidos. Sus imagines son sugestivas y alusivas. Insinúa en los poemas su enorme erudición y su conocimiento profundo del misticismo y lo hace sin frustrar a su lector. ***** ANGELINA MUÑIZ-HUBERMAN was born in France in 1936, the daughter of Republican refugees from the Spanish Civil War. She has lived in Mexico since she was six years old. She has traced her background on her mother’s side to Jews who converted to Catholicism and never left Spain.

After intensely reading the Old Testament and its commentaries, in particular the mystical books of the Kabbalah, she formally converted to Judaism. For many years, Muñiz-Huberman has been professor of Comparative Literature at the Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City. She has written essays and novels, including La guerra del unicornio (1983), El mercader de Toledo (1999), and El sefaradí romantico: la azarosa vida de Mateo Aleman II (2005). She is the author of many books of poetry, among them El ojo de la creación (1992) and La sal en el rostro (1998). Her favorite themes are creation and destruction, the union of opposites, the center of existence, and more recently, exile as a way of life. She writes with great care, measuring each word and paying attention to its sounds. Her images are suggestive and allusive.

She insinuates into her poems her enormous erudition and her profound knowledge of mysticism, and she does so without frustrating her reader.

MIRYAM GOVER DE NASATSKY (1937- ) se graduó como profesora en Letras en la Universidad Nacional del Litoral, Argentina. Docente e investigadora. Con una beca del Fondo Nacional de las Artes editó la Bibliografía de Alberto Gerchunoff. Conjuntamente con la Lic. Ana Weinstein dio a conocer los dos tomos del libro Escritores judeoargentinos: bibliografía 1900-1987. Además, con Ana Weinstein y Roberto Nasatsky, relevaron las distintas facetas de la actividad musical en Trayectorias musicales judeo-argentinas. Dado que las artes plásticas constituyen otra vertiente importante de la creatividad judeolatinoamericana, con Stephen Sadow (Northeastern University, Boston), construyeron el sitio Web Jewish Latin American Art (http://www.jewishlatinart.neu.edu/) que centraliza la obra de más de cien artistas para favorecer su estudio y difusión. Ha presentado ponencias en congresos internacionales y colabora en varias revistas literarias argentinas. Entre sus obras están el poemario, Persistentes vibraciones (1999), y dos novelas históricas, La pasión de un visionario— Theodor Herzl (2004) y Desde la cima: Reminiscencias de David BenGurión (2008). ***** MIRYAM GOVER DE NASATSKY (1937- ) graduated with a degree in education from the National University of the Littoral, Argentina. ATALAYA Un punzante alarido atravesó la barraca silenciosa y zapatos de todas las medidas, quizás cientos o miles, se alinearon solos en el patio, formando interminables filas, tal cual lo hacían recorridos por el frío sudor del miedo.

Muy gastados, de color indefinido pero firmes como si recubrieran los dañados pies de quienes debían morir por ser judíos.

Los más pequeños, todavía humedecidos por el llanto y la orina junto a restos de grandes suelas quebradas. ¡Silencio y espanto en la fría mañana! ¡Piedras, ladridos y púas!

Otro alarido intentó en vano hacerlos marchar.

Sólo atinaron a juntarse más hasta encimarse formando una lúgubre montaña.

Atalaya de oprobio, permanecen así, atrincherados, sin consuelo ante el horror y la impotencia.

Terribly worn, indefinite color but holding together as if they might yet cover the damaged feet of those compelled to die because they were Jews.

The smallest still damp with tears and urine next to the remains of large broken soles.

Silence and shock in the cold morning!

Stones, bricks and barbs!

Another wail tried to set them walking — in vain.

They are capable only of clustering together until they are stacked into a sorrowful mountain.

RICARDO FEIERSTEIN Argentina, 1942-

RICARDO FEIERSTEIN nació en Buenos Aires y ha ejercido una variedad de oficios: escritor, arquitecto, periodista, crítico de espectáculos. Lleva publicadas diversas antologías y algo más de una veintena de libros, entre ellos; cinco novelas: la trilogía Sinfonía Inocente (1984), Mestizo (1988 y 1994 en castellano; 2000 en inglés), y La logia del umbral (2001). Todas ellas conforman una saga, de lectura independiente, sobre la condición judía latinoamericana y la historia argentina. They all make up a saga, though they may be read independently, about the Jewish condition in Latin America and the history of Argentina. His literary work has won him a number of prizes: the Municipal Prize, the Coca-Cola Prize, the Sash of Honor of the Argentine Writers Society, and the International Fernando Jeno Prize from Mexico, among others. Aquí ya tuve mi primer amor, los resbalones de la lluvia una pelea donde metí al otro en una zanja la marcha peronista en los parlantes de la calle cine a tres por ochenta, barriletes asmáticos la primera televisión que llegó al barrio uniformes y caballos, fervor y mucha gente la loca camiseta de San Lorenzo tallé un corazón en el pupitre de la escuela fui al entierro de Evita por ser mejor alumno pude ajustar los fríos anteojos de la noche recorrer árboles, prostitutas, ruidos, siestas, espejos de luz al brotar los ojos de mis hijos miré al sol como un acordeón contra el crepúsculo trepar montañas, plegar amaneceres.

Llevo esta tierra en mi sangre.

Nací en Buenos Aires en 1942.

These are the old Jews hardworking cannibals of affection poets who shared in the history and prison and the bread of great men in a glorious past, under laceworks of European constellations in petals of Yiddish sifted through like the odd piece of luggage no longer wide streets and the groan of wagons no longer drunkards and snow on the windowsill no longer the tavern with its rackety chairs no longer those rabbis of the Kabbalah their characteristic language of thorns and quavers, groomed by daylight.

And then the others: Litvaks who embroider unfamiliar threads Kosher butches with shadowy beards the outlandish workmanship of hatters peddlers from Istanbul and Damascus roster of Jewish occupations of strutting divers into the surface and all, all of those loud and lithe as dolphins saunter through the streets of Buenos Aires nothing to smoke, cuddle, kiss or sing hand on their ribs, as if just now 69

Children riveted by their witless amazement at being alive lost among the conspiratorial winks of a city wide open, and no longer grasping these are the old Jews, faithful flotilla of pirates stripped of their main and master who artistically compose expectations with echoes of panic.

And that one, who on the streets of Warsaw may have been a politician of subtleties now picks out grubby little deals or speculates with his wealthy compatriots in a dull and half paralyzed culture to swerve around the potholes of hunger‌ And who, really, would not be moved to compassion at seeing those mastheads shake with fury on either side filled with the inert sounds foreshadowings and honed prescriptions and turbulent gatherings of Yiddish illuminated only by the ashes of fires ignited years ago in a far-off wilderness alongside the Rhine and still without tinder radial passengers in the night owners, in spite of everything, of our deficiencies in the Hebrew seedlings of a garden we didn’t plant and yet continue to love.

Oh, my old Jews, passports of thick diphthongs of foreign clothing and shifting eyes of hurried walk, as if some geometry of shadow might be lying in wait running through the mechanism of time with brusque and rusty whispering ties clumsily knotted among communities of inhabitants and stout philanthropists of asylums who spit sideways and restrict the pulse beat of irrational grievance 70

COMO ASESINAR LA INDIFERENCIA Es tarea fácil capturar anonimatos meterse en un cubo de hormigón a medida de ésos que componen la retícula visible de las ciudades trajeados por un sastre que estudia los rincones y fabrica cavernas, para aislar óvalos del frío dejar correr los perros amarillos de la angustia y encerrarse en una conversación privada con las serpientes enlatadas de la duda.

Pero no se trata de deshilachar los bordes ni reconstruir paraísos inexistentes hay que acometer al día con prepotencia deshacerlo a tirones, cambiarlo siempre sentirse parte del mundo y no un extraño sacudirse la rutina de las quejas y participar con todo en el diseño una porción de pan nos pertenece no dejemos el destino en mano ajena porque la sociedad también será como la hagamos.

Una cosa tan simple: morder la vida.

DESPEDIDA CON GATO Al oeste avanza el coche ya vencido.

Desde el primer vehículo del cortejo veo el encofrado, cimbrando leve con los avatares del camino de la vida.

Descubro: mamá se ha incorporado y me saluda, moviendo la mano sonríe, alegre, el cabello oscuro los anteojos y el cuerpo pequeño todavía sano, todavía fuerte (unos treinta años atrás) cuando imitaba a las tías con estilo ay, pícara Eufemia, Frume, Frímele, Fremutzske...

Ella, entonces, semiacostada se despide para siempre, agita sus dedos y me nombra con mi apodo de infancia que ilumina la memoria prostática detenida allí, en su mejor momento atraviesa el molinete y marcha a reunirse con mi padre.

Encallecido, soy de nuevo un niño que aferra su mano para atravesar este cruce.

Otros se incorporan a la escena.

Hay control policial en la autopista y un zigzag de inquietud me recorre pero el oficial que los dirige se descubre y persigna, en señal de respeto al desganado paso de la carroza quizá sin saberlo, homenajea a ella, mi porteña antecesora fruto primerizo en esta tierra de extensas genealogías europeas.

Y después, el baldío yermo.

Un gato negro aparece junto al grupo por vacilantes senderos arbolados el silencioso habitar de los que fueron.

Cien, doscientos, cuatrocientos metros y él allí, sin despegarse de la fila hasta llegar al lugar de su destino.

Algo escondido tras un mármol sigue atento la ceremonia enreda el frágil, peraltado nudo un kadish murmurado con voz queda y sollozo estrujado en la garganta.

Luego se adelanta, al borde del pozo para controlar, ya sin disimulo las primeras paladas de tierra que caen bajo el cielo desangrado.

Emprendemos el triste regreso con él convertido en lazarillo marcha adelante, cruza, se detiene nos lleva de vuelta hasta el principio por un camino alternativo que no repita la ruta del dolor.

Sus grandes ojos observan todo el tiempo, comprensivos y cuando llegamos de vuelta ahora sí, solitarios e inermes a la gran explanada de acceso de pronto, ha desaparecido y nos deja una sonrisa abandonada.

Mi hijo asegura que esta fue la última humorada de la bobe o tal vez la idishe mame reencarnada para hacernos bienvolver de la excursión.

Creo que tiene razón, pero huérfano a mi edad, quién diría mientras escribo, ahora, estoy temblando.

FAREWELL WITH CAT The already exhausted vehicle moves westward.

From the first car in the cortège I watch the hearse sway lightly with the avatars on life’s journey.

What I see: Mama has raised herself and waves to me she smiles, happy, her dark hair, eyeglasses and small body still healthy, still strong (this is thirty years ago) parodying the stylish aunts ay, mischievous Eufemia, Frume, Frimele, Fremutzske . . .

Then, half out of her bed she says goodbye for all time, shakes her finger and calls me by my childhood name that kindles a memory frozen at the optimal moment, and passes through the turnstile to join my father.

Silenced, a child again I hold her hand at the crucial passage.

Others come on the scene there is a police checkpoint along the highway and anxiety zigzags through me but the officer in charge emerges and crosses himself out of respect for the reluctant progress of the carriage, paying his perhaps unknowing homage to her, my porteña forebear in this land the first fruit of endlessly receding European genealogies and the subsequent uncultivated wasteland.

A black cat attaches itself to our group moving along sinuous tree-lined paths the silent abode of those who were.

RICARDO FEIERSTEIN Argentina, 1942The small cat, self-invited, walks beside us, attentive, just a kitten really, meowing quietly one, two, four hundred meters and stays with the procession until we all arrive at our destination.

Something hidden behind a marble slab Still involved in the ritual weaves together the fragile, elevated knot a murmured kaddish and a sob caught in the throat.

Then it moves forward to the edge of the grave no longer trying to pretend, to take charge of the first shovels full of earth that fall under the bloodless sky.

We turn back in our sorrow with the cat as our guide marching forward, crossing, stopping leading us to our starting point by another path that avoids the painful way in.

His large eyes take everything in comprehending and when we arrive again now, yes, alone and defenseless at the wide entrance of the esplanade suddenly it has disappeared leaving behind a Cheshire grin.

My son is sure that this was the last whimsy of his bubbe or maybe the yiddishe mama incarnate to bring us back safe and sound.

I think he’s right, but, now that, at my age, I’m an orphan, who knows.

I’m trembling as I write it.

Su primer libro de poesía, Infartodiario, fue publicado en Buenos Aires en 1983. Su segundo libro, El inquilino que hay en mí, también fue publicado en Buenos Aires, en 1987. Su tercer libro de poesía, De remotas tierras hablo, fue editado en Jerusalén en 1996 por Neta Gonen del Hadassah College. Esta edición es bilingüe: castellano y hebreo. ISAAC GOLDEMBERG (1945- ) poeta, novelista peruano-norteamericano, nació en Chepén, un pueblo del norte del Perú, hijo de madre católica y padre judío. Su padre lo mandó al León Pinelo, un internado judío de Lima. Más tarde, se encontró con el antisemitismo, por ser el único estudiante judío en la prestigiosa escuela militar Leoncio Prado. His father sent him to León Pinelo, a Jewish boarding school in Lima. Later on, he encountered anti-Semitism, as he was the only Jewish student in Leoncio Prado, the prestigious military school.

After graduating, he left for Spain to study medicine. He spent time in Haifa, Israel, and then, in 1974, he moved permanently to New York City.

There he teaches and directs the Latin American Writers Institute. In his novel La vida a plazos de don Jacobo Lerner (1976) and his drama Hotel Amérikka (2000), Goldemberg examines the tension between Jews and non-Jews in Peru’s interior. JUANA GARCÍA ABÁS (1950- ) tiene ascendencia judeo-sefaradita y canaria, posee la nacionalidad cubana y la española. Es Licenciada en Historia de la Universidad de la Habana. En 1991 la Academia de Ciencias de Cuba aprobó su tesis Análisis diacrítico en la estética de las artes audiovisuales, con vistas al doctorado en Filosofía. Estudió artes plásticas en la Escuela Nacional de Artes. trabajó como periodista, dramaturga, guionista, crítica de arte, asesora, directora de programas y especialista en mass media de 1970 a 1990. Ha publicado ensayos en revistas especializadas en literatura y artes, y es traductora de francés e inglés. Publicó Las palabras son islas (2000). Obtuvo el Premio Nacional de Poesía Nicolás Guillén por su libro de poesía Circunloquio en 2006.

Recibió el Premio de Crítica de 2003 del Consejo Nacional de las Artes Plásticas y el Premio Centenario de Arthur Rimbaud de Traducción (de la Embajada de Francia y Ministerio de Cultura de Cuba). Fue invitada al Festival Internacional de Poesía de Copenhague en 2006. Es jurado en más de cincuenta concursos nacionales (teatro, poesía y audiovisuales) y en el Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano. ***** JUANA GARCÍA ABÁS (1950- ) is a Sephardic Jew from the Canary Islands and is a citizen of both Cuba and Spain. She studied art at the National School for the Arts. She has published essays in magazines specializing in literature and the arts, and is a translator from English and French. She published Las palabras son islas in 2000. In 2006, she was awarded the Nicolás Guillén Prize for her book of poetry Circunloquio. She also won the Art Critics Award from the National Council of the Arts in 2003, and the Arthur Rimbaud Centenary Prize for Translation (from the Embassy of France and the Cuban Ministry of Culture). She was invited to participate in the 2006 International Poetry Festival in Copenhagen. García Abás has been a juror for more than fifty national competitions (theater, poetry, and audiovisual works) and the International Festival for New Latin American Cinema.

Bajo trances de pérdida o martirio, las pústulas se espesan y la masa inflama este golem que oprime con su jácara un signo que nos borra en el retardo.

Los umbrales han sido destinados pero las puertas nunca se terminan y se apagan los voces en los cánticos.

Diásporas y masacres con azares de ciervo, desentrañan la redención que anuncian los exilios del cuerpo y los del alma, disgregando maromas y arcaduces con ley que rige sin que se revele, trastocando los cauces de las cábalas.

DANIEL CHIROM (1955-2008) fue poeta, periodista y abogado argentino.

Nació en Buenos Aires. Publicó numerosos poemarios, entre ellos: Crónica a Robledo Puch (1975), Los Atlantes (1979), La Diáspora (1983), y El Hilo de Oro (1989). Este último libro obtuvo Mención de Honor a poemario inédito en el Premio Municipal de 1987-89 y Mención de Honor en el Premio Ediciones Culturales Argentinas. En 1994 obtuvo el Primer Premio Fundación Inca de Poesía Inedita 1994 con su poemario Candelabros, publicado en el 2000. Realizó la Antología de la Nueva Poesía Argentina (1980) y también antologías de Walt Whitman, Wallace Stevens, Edgar Bayley, y Raúl Gustavo Aguirre. En prosa publicó Charly García (1983), Fue director de la revista de poesía ilustrada El Jabalí y condujo el programa de radio El Jabalí, dedicado a la poesía y al jazz. Colaboró en los suplementos literarios de Clarín, La Prensa, La Razón, y otros, además de publicar en muchas revistas nacionales y extranjeras. ***** DANIEL CHIROM (1955-2008) was an Argentine poet, journalist and attorney; he was born in Buenos Aires. El Hilo de Oro won Honorable Mention for an Unedited Book in the Municipal Prize of 198789 and Honorable Mention in the Argentine Cultural Editions Prize.

Chirom won First Prize from the Inca Poetry Foundation with his unpublished poetry collection Candelabros, later published in 2000. He compiled the Antología de la Nueva Poesía Argentina (1980) and also anthologies of Walt Whitman, Wallace Stevens, Edgar Bayley, and Raúl Gustavo Aguirre. He authored the narrative Charly García (1983). He served as director of the illustrated poetry magazine El Jabalí and a radio program, also called El Jabalí, dedicated to poetry and jazz. He wrote for the literary supplements of the newspapers Clarín, La Prensa, La Razón, and others, and for many national and international magazines.

Todas las noches comemos en forma abundante y cantamos y reímos con el vino pero esta noche sólo hay pan ázimo y vinagre pues estamos tristes pensando en el destierro. ¿Qué sucede esta noche que no entonamos cánticos?

Todas las noches alabamos a Dios con nuestros mejores acentos pero esta noche el silencio reina porque nuestra hambre es débil y extenso el desierto. ¿Qué sucede esta noche que las sombras ganan nuestras casas?

Todas las noches las luces brillan para iluminar la mesa pero esta noche sólo hay un candelabro para que recordemos la oscuridad. ¿Qué sucede esta noche que nuestras manos y lenguas tiemblan?

Todas las noches rezamos por el día que vendrá y bailamos al pie de nuestros lechos porque la sangre inocente no deja huellas pero esta noche permanecemos quietos mientras las aguas se desbocan y las oraciones son para los muertos que aún nos acompañan. ¿Qué sucede esta noche que apretamos los labios y cerramos los ojos?
