EPIC The Most

Event in Real Producers History publisher’s note On November 17, DFW Real Producers will be hosting our first ever black-tie awards gala, called The ESPE’s! I am not going to lie; I am wildly excited about this event. I have wanted to do it for a while, and I am so excited that it is finally happening! Being that it is November, the month of Thanksgiving, I suppose a more appropriate and equally accurate word choice would be that I am so thankful for this incredible community that makes it even possible to have this kind of event. If you recall, Real Producers here in DFW as a whole almost didn’t happen. When I moved here from Minnesota in February of 2018 to launch North DFW Real Producers, the OG RP here in DFW, I was very close to failing and almost turned around to go back home to Minnesota. But, thankfully, the community started to grow and take shape. The gratitude I have for the first few agents and businesses that truly supported Real Producers from the beginning is unmatched. If it weren’t for them, Real Producers wouldn’t exist here, and we certainly wouldn’t be having The ESPE Awards in a couple of weeks! The ESPE’s is a first on many fronts. It is not only our first ever awards gala, but it is also the first time

8 • November 2021

that we are bringing together all three Real Producers communities: North DFW, Dallas, and Tarrant, for an unforgettable combined event. As I write this, anticipation is feverishly growing inside of me! At 7 pm, we will be starting the awards ceremony where we will be presenting ten different ESPE Awards. At the time of writing this, we have already had thousands of people vote on these awards. The real estate community is sincerely pouring into this event! I would be remiss if I didn’t give a special thank you to our RP vetted business partners and especially those who are sponsoring this event. As you know, it takes a lot of time, money, and talent to throw an event like this, and it wouldn’t be possible without them. From the bottom of my heart, thank you! Well, ladies and gentlemen, it is almost time. Our team cannot wait to get all dressed up and to celebrate with you from 6-9 pm on November 17. It will be a night to remember! See you at The ESPE’s! Sharing a piece of the pie If you know or have had a chance to talk with Haley Howard, you understand that she lives life with a true sense of abundance. As a REALTOR® with RE/MAX Trinity, Haley believes there’s plenty of life’s treasures to go around to ensure that everyone gets a piece of the pie. Spirit of Success

She literally puts that spirit on display during the holidays each year. “My husband helps with what I call the Pie Patrol in my neighborhood. A couple of days before Thanksgiving, we stack about 75 pumpkin pies in the car, and he drives me around the neighborhood with a blinking orange light on my car,” Haley says. “My community looks forward to this, and I always announce when I’m about to start handing off pies. They sit outside waiting for me or send their kids running after my vehicle! I jump out of the car and hand them a pie. It is a super fun tradition, and I will be out again this year for the fifth year!” Getting Her Start

Haley earned her real estate license nearly seven years ago. She was born and raised in Rapid City, SD. As she came of age, she worked in a salon.

“So my mother-in-law, Carrie Smith, who has been selling real estate for years convinced us to move to Texas, and she offered to take me under her wing and show me the business.”

“I cut hair for 13 years. I did 25 haircuts a day and built a large clientele,” Haley says. “While I liked what I did and enjoyed the people, I didn’t feel a challenge in it.”

Soon, Haley and her husband made the move to the Lone Star State where she earned her license and began her adventure in the business. Making Her Own Opportunities

Finding Her Texas Home

At the time, Haley and her husband lived in Colorado and welcomed their first baby into the world. “With that, I knew it was a good time for me to make a change,” she says.

12 • November 2021

Like most who start in the business, Haley experienced a challenging time. “It was hard. It was difficult not getting a constant paycheck and not knowing what to expect. Also, I didn’t know anyone else here,” she recalls.

The key is to just keep at it. There’s enough business for everyone.

“That means a lot, especially not having a lot of family here. I have gained some amazing friends out of this business.” Rewarding Life

Away from work, Haley looks forward to time with her family, including her husband, Chad, and their two children — 8-year-old daughter, Presley, and their 5-year-old son, Nolan. In their free time, Haley and her family like to go camping. She also has a passion for cooking, baking, and entertaining. “I love having people over and cooking for everyone,” she says with a smile. When it comes to giving back, one of Haley’s favorite organizations is Children’s Miracle Network. In fact, she donates a portion of her commission from each sale to the organization.

“I just thought about what it would take to get my name out in an oversaturated market where people had been selling for years. I didn’t know if I would need to go back to cutting hair.” Haley didn’t give up. She got creative and gained ground day-byday with a variety of social media tactics and giveaways. Little by little, the tide turned and Haley found success.

14 • November 2021

Signs of Success

She has continued to build from there. In fact, in 2020, she recorded over $20 million in sales volume on 65 deals. At the heart of it all is Haley’s love of people. “That’s really the most fulfilling part of my work. I get to meet new people all of the time, and I feel like I build great friendships with all of my clients,” Haley says.

Haley offers helpful advice to others who are looking forward to taking their own steps forward in the business. As she says, “First and foremost, my advice is don’t give up. I went from two sales my first year and built it up. The key is to just keep at it. There’s enough business for everyone.” That’s the spirit of positivity and abundance that Haley puts to work each day for the people around her — helping them achieve their dreams.

Informing Their Decision In the process of moving a real estate transaction from start to finish, there are plenty of moving parts and a lot of uncertain variables. Anything that helps to effectively move the process forward is very appreciated. That’s why it means so much to know you have a partner on your side who is there to make things as seamless as possible. That’s where Semper Fi Home Inspections excels with a positive approach that supports the deal and informs clients’ decisions. Danny Smith is the president of the company. “Being able to help people during the process of buying a house, which can be one of the most stressful times of their lives, means a lot. We’re able to help bring some clarity to the condition of the home. We are thorough and informative and also positive and optimistic,” says Danny Smith. “We’re able to help people who maybe don’t have experience with buying a house, so we check the house out very thoroughly for them but stay positive when we present our findings. Our mission is their peace of mind, and anything can be fixed. That’s the satisfaction I get … being able to help clients and partnering with REALTORS® who also want that for their clients.”

by a time in North Carolina, then five years in Texas. “I spent eight of my years in Texas and retired here. This is our home,” he says. “During the middle of my career, I was also a detachment commander in Sweden and Croatia’s US embassies. I was in charge of the Marines at the embassy. It helped me learn how to run a business. I had to train them, take care of them, and representing the U.S. and the USMC well in a foreign country. That groomed me for being a business owner.” Taking a New Path

As Danny retired and left the service, he was ready to do something on his own. “I knew I wanted to start a business and work for myself. I researched business opportunities. I stumbled across home inspections. A service company seemed to fit the bill for me,” he says. “I liked working on houses. My grandfather had taught me, and I had been good at inspecting jet engines in the Marines, so I thought I would do houses.”

A Tradition of Service

Danny’s tradition of serving others is a long one. In fact, he served in the United States Marines. “I joined out of high school. I was a good student and made good grades and I was able to get a six-year contract with guaranteed duty station preference,” Danny says. “I went to the West Coast where I served as a jet engine mechanic for KC-130 Hercules cargo planes and also F/A-18 Hornet fighter engines.” During his time in the service, Danny had duty stations in El Toro, CA, then Okinawa, Japan, followed

Danny and his wife, Marla, with two of their four children, Linnea and Clara

Danny started Semper Fi Home Inspections 11 years ago and has grown the business steadily through time. Teaming Up for Excellence

Today, Danny has eight inspectors who work with him, along with another who is in training. In addition, he also has a fulltime Operations Manager and a Marketing Director. Away from work, Danny cherishes time with his family, including his wife, Marla, and their four children — 28-year-old son, Nolan (and his wife, Kirstin, and their twin sons, Easton and Weston); and 26-year-old son, Derek (and his wife, Hattie); 15-year-old daughter, Clara; and 13-year-old daughter, Linnea. Danny is also grounded by his faith that plays a central role in his day-to-day life. “We have a great church family and friends. God has blessed me beyond what I could imagine. He has been my source of strength and guidance … giving me the ability and guidance to do what I’ve done,” Danny says. “I try to honor Him in all that I do. He has blessed me with a great family, career, and business to help as many people as I can.”

24 • November 2021

Quality and Positivity

Those who work with Danny and his team rely on the positive experience they have from start to finish with each inspection. “Our REALTOR® partners are also our customers. My hope is that REALTORS® know they are as important to us as the clients are in the process. They are the ones who send us the repeat business … we always want to make sure that any concerns they have are addressed. We’ve got our jobs to do. We have standard operating procedures to look at, but we still ask our customers what they are concerned about. Peace of mind for both clients and our REALTOR® partners is our mission.” As you look for a partner to inform the decision and support the deal, look to Semper Fi Home Inspections. DRIVEN TO SERVE Your clients turn to you for your experience and expertise to be sure. But there’s something more. They rely on you because of the way you come through for them. You’re there when they need you. Jake Ascher is one who puts that spirit to work each day.

@realproducers

As a real estate professional with Team Freedom Real Estate with Veteran Realty Group, Jake is truly driven to serve. “I always want to be the best I can be. I’m extremely competitive. I want to be in the top one percent all the time,” Jake says. “There are a lot of unbelievable agents in the Metroplex. So, I’m always looking how we can make what we’re doing for our clients the best that it can be.” A Life of Contribution

Jake grew up in Wisconsin. He joined the National Guard, where he took his willingness to serve to a new level. “It helped me with college, and I got great experience,” he remembers. “In 2005, I moved to Texas. That’s when Hurricane Katrina hit, so I was mobilized right away. We ended up being there on the ground in New Orleans for 80 days, followed by helping with Hurricane Rita in Texas.” There were other memorable moments from Jake’s service through time … like the time he helped support efforts to fight the Amarillo fire in 2007. He was also deployed to Afghanistan in 2008 and 2009. He has a big place in his heart for those who have also served.

“The citizen-soldier is taken for granted sometimes. It’s challenging to balance having a career at the same time,” he says. “When I moved here from Wisconsin I wanted to run my own business and I knew that the opportunities would be greater here.” For a time, Jake worked as a banker with Chase. That was about the time of his deployment to the Middle East, during the economic downturn. “When I returned to the states from deployment, I saved my money and started buying some houses as an investment with some other bankers,” he explains. “At the same time, I noticed that a lot of my peers in the military were starting non-profits and I knew I wanted to do that and focus my energy, as well.” Getting His Start in the Business

Jake earned his real estate license in May 2017. As part of Team Freedom, he continues to grow his real estate business. At the same time, he also continues to serve his nation as a member of the National Guard. “I’ve always volunteered for a lot of different things. With Team Freedom, we help with Homes for Our Troops,” he says. “We donate a portion of our commission from each closing. What Homes for Our Troops does aligns with us 100 percent. They build special homes for combat veterans. I love being part of the events we do with them. We also help out with landscaping some of these properties.” Above and Beyond

During the COVID-19 outbreak, Jake was once

again called on. He was mobilized to help at various testing locations at numerous spots. The duty was demanding. In fact, Jake’s team helped with hundreds of thousands of tests during their 60-day duty. “It was a heck of an experience,” he recalls. “We were working 16- to 18-hour days. At the same time, while I was involved with that, it meant a lot to have clients that I was working with who were super supportive.” Jake plans on retiring from the service in December after 21 years of dedicated service. “I’ve really appreciated the opportunity to serve my country as a citizen soldier,” he emphasizes. Family Foundation

Away from work, Jake’s world is made much richer by his family, including his wife, Sarah, and their 7-year-old daughter, Kira. “Sarah is instrumental in taking care of our clients with post-transaction gifts. She is a true artist, and she really holds down the fort,” Jake says with a smile. 36 • November 2021

In his free time, Jake enjoys spending time with his family at their property in Rome. He has an office there, along with acreage with animals. Another free-time passion for Jake is playing golf and collecting World War II items. There When it Matters Most

Those who get to know and work with Jake understand as well as anyone his commitment to service and making a difference for others. “It’s an honor for me to work with people to help them during their real estate transaction. But it’s more than that. It’s a lifetime relationship,” Jake explains. “People call me at all times, and I’m always going to take the time to answer. We call it our REALTOR® for Life approach.” Jake Ascher makes an important difference in the lives of those who get to know him. Without a doubt, they know they can count on him when it matters the most. They understand that he is driven to serve. @realproducers

MONICA

WOFFORD matching the need realproducersmag.com

Tarrant Real Producers • 41

One of the greatest abilities in real estate is being able to find the right pieces that work well together. That’s an area where Monica Wofford definitely excels. As broker/owner of Wofford Realty, Monica reaches real results for others by matching their needs. “Whether it’s a home for a family, a home for cattle, or a home for a business owner, I love matching my clients with the perfect property,” she says with a smile. Getting Her Start in Louisiana

Monica was born and raised in a small town in Louisiana. In the process, she had a great country life with her four siblings. She and her brother, Matt, only 13 months apart, grew up like twins. “We did everything together … riding motorcycles, hunting, fishing. Today, he still is my best friend.” The foundations of her life growing up in Louisiana have served her well through time. “I grew up on my uncle’s breeding ranch for thoroughbred horses,” she says. “Through that, I gained a passion for horses.” “Growing up in the country with a very handy father, I spent a lot of time learning different skills including construction, remodeling, and working with cars. I gained a lot of hands-on experience with mechanical elements,” Monica explains. “That has really grounded me. It has also really helped me in my real estate career. To this day, my siblings and I joke that when we have a question or need to learn

how to do something, we don’t go to YouTube. Instead we just FaceTime Dad. He always has the answer.” Moving to the Lone Star State

Monica and her family moved to Texas when she was 16. Within a couple of weeks, she had her first job — working as a Records Clerk with one of the local police departments. “In time, I moved to the criminal investigation unit and started working at undercover locations as a legal assistant. Through that, I had the opportunity to help write federal grants for several covert operations. In one operation, we had undercover officers who were buying stolen goods off the street. In another, we were dealing with stolen vehicles and in a third operation, we were working with narcotics,” she remembers. “It was great to be part of that and to help write the grants and set up the covert locations. One negative experience I had was when I was held hostage in jail for a brief time. After being in that line of work for about ten years, it made me realize that I wanted to be in an industry where I could help people.”

Gaining Ground. Building Results.

As Monica considered her new direction with her career, she had been exposed to the work her brother Matt was starting as a REALTOR®. “It was very intriguing to me and so I decided to get my license, too.” Monica earned her real estate license in 2006. Through time, she steadily built her business as an agent. Then, seven years ago, she took the next step forward in her real estate career when she earned her Broker’s license.

“Out of the five of us, four are licensed REALTORS®, with three serving as Brokers. We are all located in hot markets around the country. In the process, we get a chance to work together a lot—sharing referrals and business together.” A Wonderful Life

Away from work, Monica’s world revolves around her two children and she couldn’t be more proud of them. “My daughter, Madison, just graduated from Texas A&M and is working on her master’s degree. She plans on becoming a Physician’s Assistant,” Monica says. “My son, Jackson, just started his first year at Texas Tech and is pursuing a degree in business management with a minor in real estate. He plans on joining Wofford Realty after graduation and expanding the commercial leg of what we do.” In her free time, Monica stays very active. “I’m happiest when I’m outside. I have two dogs that I adore, too,” she says. “I love running, hiking, and exploring together with them, along with biking.” There are other fun things ahead for Monica, as well.

She started her own brokerage — Wofford Realty — soon thereafter. Today, she has an elite boutique brokerage with five seasoned agents. The passion Monica has for what she does is easy to see. “I really enjoy the process of buying and selling real estate and also working with, and supporting, the members of our team,” she

emphasizes. “We have a great group. They have a similar work ethic as I do. We love to help guide our clients through the process and manage all of the challenges that come along with that.” As Monica continues to build her own real estate career with a mix of residential, commercial, and farm/ ranch businesses, she shares a unique dynamic with her siblings.

As she says, “My brother and I just purchased a commercial building together and we are opening a bar near Lake Travis this fall.” Day-by-day, Monica makes a meaningful difference for her clients and her team. No matter what side of the business she is involved with, Monica gives her all … with a selfless spirit that is all about matching the need.

Marcy Barkemeyer Full-Speed Forward

realproducersmag.com

Tarrant Real Producers • 49

In life and business, the most productive way to reach your goals is to commit and take action. One who is a powerful example of that spirit is Marcy Barkemeyer.

As a REALTOR® with Keller Williams, Marcy takes a full-speed forward approach to help those around her. “The part I love the most about what I do is serving the families I work with. That’s my nature … coming from teaching … to be of service,” Marcy says. “I’m helping families accomplish a goal for themselves … providing security, safety, longevity, and financial wealth for them. It’s helping people move forward, the same as when I was working as a teacher in school … helping kiddos and their families move forward in life.” Supporting Excellence through Education

Marcy earned her real estate license in June 2006. Prior to that, she taught for a number of years, then stayed home with her children before returning to the profession for a few years. In all, she shared her teaching talents for 16 years. While she had a love for the profession, in time, she was ready for a change. “We had standardized testing and curriculum in Texas at the time with regulations about what we could and couldn’t do, and there were some rules I didn’t agree with. My teammates and I did what we could to follow the rules,” Marcy says. “Teaching second grade, we were only allowed to give side hugs to children and people couldn’t bring in things like cupcakes to share. It took the fun and love out of teaching for me. I was working really hard at teaching and spent a lot of hours outside of what was required.”

Taking a New Path

At that time, real estate came to mind. “When I was thinking about leaving teaching and going into real estate, I wanted to get paid for the amount of effort I put in,” Marcy remembers. “I talked with my husband and brother, Michael Clapp, and looked at other directions and decided real estate was the track. My brother is the owner and broker of a Keller Williams office in North Houston. He was influential in guiding me toward real estate.” As she prepared to move into a new career, she faced the reality of making a transition in the best way possible for her family. “We had some debt. Leaving my job was very risky, so I decided to wait to make the move until we were out of debt,” she says. So, Marcy took action and put in the extra effort. “I had a friend who was a single mother who delivered the Fort Worth Star-Telegram newspaper. I did that for 14 months while I taught school. Each night at 1:30 a.m. I would go to the warehouse to pick up the papers. Then I would drive my route and get home around 4 a.m., take a nap, and then get up and go teach school,” Marcy remembers. “During that time, I earned as much money doing the paper route as I did teaching school. I was able to pay off all the debt.” Family Foundation

Away from work, Marcy’s life is

made richer by family, including her husband, Greg, and their children — their son, Blake (and his wife Kristin), and their daughter, Allison. She also enjoys a close relationship with Michael and other extended family. In her free time, Marcy has a passion for travel and spending time with family. She and her family are also active members at White’s Chapel United Methodist Church. She also serves on the Board of Directors for Mercy House Ministries, a local charity helping single pregnant mothers. “I like to do what I can to help single pregnant women have a home with safety, hope, and a renewed life in Christ,” she says. “It’s a group home where they can stay during their pregnancy that then provides them with training for their future.”

Winning Teamwork

One of the most rewarding parts of Marcy’s work is her team. As part of that, she feels lucky to be able to team up with her husband, Greg, who retired from his career in marketing and joined her in the business about two and a half years ago. Greg serves as marketing director for the business. They are joined by a full-time executive assistant, Allison Brock. As a native Texan, Marcy takes pride in doing her part to help her clients reach their goals. She also teaches and coaches new agents coming into the business and in the past has been a part of the agent leadership council at Keller Williams. Those who get to know and work with Marcy rely on her honesty, integrity, and determination to help them reach their dreams. In the process, she makes a difference for them by moving full-speed forward on their behalf.
