Will You Win in

202WON? At the turn of the year, a handful of people wished me a “Happy 202WON!” and, being the cheesy person I am, I absolutely loved it. For many of us that work in the real estate world, 2020 was a year that we won in our business and in our finances. We “pivoted” (I know everyone is tired of hearing that word by now) and we capitalized on the opportunity that 2020 presented. But, that was last year. And although I, and many of you, feel optimistic about 2021, we know that it is going to bring a whole new set of challenges and frustrations. So, are you prepared to win in 2021? Last year was so crazy that many of us were like the Tasmanian Devil barreling through each day, taking on everything that came at us, and getting results... but possibly leaving a bit of a trail of destruction along the way. That destruction could be in your health, family, spiritually, and I would guess that in

your business, and my business, there is likely a lot of organization and cleaning up that needs to happen. I know for myself and my business that I spent a lot of time at the end of 2020 and early 2021 re-organizing, updating, implementing new systems, new employees, and cleaning up my mind to prepare for the year ahead. I’ve realized that sometimes I need to slow down for a period of time so that I can speed up and experience the growth I desire. And for all of us high achievers the idea of “slowing down” does not feel natural, however, it may be necessary for you. I invite you to ask yourself what you need to do to make sure that your business has the foundation it needs for you to hit your goals this year and the years to come. Just because you succeeded last year does not mean you will again this year. But if we do what we need to, then there is no reason 2021 shouldn’t be a better year than 2020. Cheers to 202WON! NORTH DFW REAL PRODUCERS

Inaugural Magazine

RELEASE PARTY January 2021 Starting with the January 2021 Issue of North DFW Real Producers, we are now doing mini monthly Magazine Release Parties! In attendance for these events, we will have those real estate agents and businesses that were featured in that issue along with a few non-featured advertising partners.

14 • February 2021

The Inaugural Release Party was an absolute blast! It was such a fun way to debut the magazine and connect a smaller group of rockstars. We hosted it on the top floor of the Skyhouse in Frisco, which has such a beautiful view overlooking The Star.

Congratulations again to Jane Clark, Andrea Miller, Michael Coburn, Wayne Salmans, and Brian Poduska! We feel very grateful to have had the chance to share your stories and celebrate with you. Cheers, Jordan Espeseth Owner North DFW Real Producers

FAQ ABOUT THIS MAGAZINE

Real Producers magazine started in Indianapolis in 2015 and is now in over 100 markets across the nation and spreading rapidly. North DFW Real Producers launched in August 2018. Name a large city and we are there or will be soon! In every market, we take the Top 500 agents, based off of the MLS production, and we build an exclusive magazine around those agents. We share their stories, successes, market trends, upcoming events — really, anything that will connect, inform and inspire, we put in the monthly publication. We strive to inform and inspire the top producing real estate agents in the local market and connect them socially. The secondary focus is to provide an avenue for our affiliate partners to create relationships with these top performers on a level that they might not be able to achieve on their own. Q: WHO RECEIVES NORTH DFW REAL PRODUCERS MAGAZINE? A: The top 500 agents in North Dallas/Fort Worth. We pull the MLS numbers (by volume) from in the North DFW area: Collin County, Denton County and a few other locations in Dallas County that are North of I-635. Approximately 20,000 agents are licensed in this territory. We cut the list off at #500, and the distribution was born. The 2018 Top 500 cutoff is $8.5 million. The list will reset at the end of every year and will continue to update annually. Q: WHAT ABOUT THE DALLAS AND FORT WORTH TERRITORIES? A: Dallas Real Producers (Dallas County South of 635 — including Rockwall County) launched May 2019 and Tarrant County Real Producers will be launching in 2021! Yes, Real Producers is covering the entire Metroplex! Q: WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR BEING FEATURED IN THIS MAGAZINE? A: It’s really simple — every feature you see has first been nominated. You can nominate other REALTORS®, affiliates, brokers, owners, or even yourself! Office leaders can also nominate RErealproducersmag.com

ALTORS®. We will consider anyone brought to our attention who is in the Top 500 because we don’t know everyone’s story, so we need your help to learn about them. A nomination currently looks like this: You email us at northdfw@realproducersmag.com with the subject line, “Nomination: (Name of Nominee).” Please explain why you are nominating them to be featured. It could be they have an amazing story that needs to be told — perhaps they overcame extreme obstacles, they are an exceptional leader, have the best customer service, or they give back to the community in a big way, etc. The next step is an interview with us to ensure it’s a good fit. If it all works out, then we put the wheels in motion for our writer to conduct an interview to write the article and for our photographers to schedule a photoshoot. Q: WHAT DOES IT COST A REALTOR® /TEAM TO BE FEATURED? A: Zero, zilch, zippo, nada, nil. It costs nothing, my friends, so nominate away! We are not a pay-to-play model. We share real stories of real producers. Q: WHO ARE THE PREFERRED PARTNERS? A: Anyone listed as a “preferred partner” in the front of the magazine is a part of this community. They will have an ad in every issue of the magazine, attend our quarterly events, and be a part of our online community. We don’t just find these businesses off the street, nor do we work with all businesses that approach us. One of many of the top agents has recommended every single preferred partner you see in this publication. We won’t even meet with a business that has not been vetted by one of you and “stamped for approval,” in a sense. Our goal is to create a powerhouse network, not only for the best REALTORS® in the area but the best affiliates, as well, so we can grow stronger together. Q: HOW CAN I RECOMMEND A PREFERRED PARTNER? A: If you know and want to recommend a local business that works with top REALTORS®, please email us to let us know at jordan.espeseth@realproducersmag.com.

rising star Written by: Dave Danielson Photography by: Ilona Jade Photography

Laine

Murray

O P E N I N G L I F E ’ S D O O R WAY S Creating a place to call home, and the start of building wealth, is what homeownership is all about. A person who believes that as much as anyone is Laine Murray. As a REALTOR® with Urocket Realty, and this month’s Rising Star, Laine works with true purpose — opening life’s doorways for others and helping them achieve their dreams. “I believe there are many benefits to homeownership,” Laine says. “I’m very passionate about real estate. I’ve seen it help my family members by having that equity in their lives … it provides a fall-back income, as well as wealth building. A lot of people don’t think homeownership is attainable. I try to break it down and make it as accessible to as many people as possible.” An Early Start

Part of Laine’s passion for the business came from her personal experience. She has lived in ten different cities in three countries, moving fifteen times. 20 • February 2021

“I’m originally from Canada, and my family moved around a lot,” Laine remembers. “During and after high school, I worked for a custom home builder in Toronto. I showed model homes on the weekends and worked in the sales office as an assistant during the week, eventually working in their head office.” “I fell in love with real estate, interior design, and new construction. Then, I went to school for marketing and social work,” Laine says. “I knew I wanted to do something with people. I always had a love for marketing and business. My passion has always been helping people.” Facing New Chapters. Finding New Paths.

As she considered her next steps, Laine visited her father here in DFW and had an unexpected development. “While I was vacationing at my dad’s in Texas, I fell off a horse and broke my leg and dislocated my ankle. I couldn’t walk for about four months and had to have three different surgeries,” she recalls. “I then decided to move here to be closer to my dad. In the process, I saw that there were so many opportunities here with friendly people and much nicer weather.”

Laine and her fiance, Michael

Laine quickly started working in property management. “I really enjoyed dealing with people,” she says. “Eventually, I got enough courage to get my real estate license in 2017.” Soon after getting her license, Laine dealt with other hurdles: “I left an abusive relationship. About the same time, my mom was diagnosed with a brain tumor. So, I packed up my stuff and moved to Toronto to help her,” she remembers. After her mom’s treatment and recovery, Laine returned to Dallas to resume building her business. Signs of Success

“Shortly after moving back to DFW in September 2018, things just started to click,” Laine recalls. “I was in a good place personally, emotionally, and professionally.” She was able to commit with focus and hard work which generated results. In fact, in the past 12 months, Laine recorded over $10 million in sales. “I’ve always loved sales,” Laine says. “But I don’t do cold-calling, and I don’t buy leads. I work on personal relationships.” Gaining Traction

While Laine is warm, friendly, and adept at building strong bonds, she didn’t know many people in the Dallas area when she started her journey in real estate. Yet, she found a way that worked for her. “I didn’t grow up here and didn’t know a ton of people, so I had to get creative to put myself out there to meet people, talking with them about what they are looking for and asking a lot of questions,” she says. “You have to understand their perspective. I’m not trying to sell them just any house … I 22 • February 2021

want to help them find what fits them. My own experience of moving a lot and living in so many cities also helped me build empathy and understanding of the needs each person has.” “It’s rewarding talking with people and hearing their stories. There are so many different jobs and life experiences people have that you’d

never think of … I find it fascinating to learn about their lives and what they’re excited about and figuring out how I can help them.” Life’s Priorities

Away from work, Laine looks forward to moments spent with her fiancé, Michael, as well as her four soon-to-bestepsons, ranging in age from 6 to 14. @realproducers

“I LOVE PUTTING THE PIECES TOGETHER, AND I WORK WELL UNDER PRESSURE. FOR ME, IT’S ABOUT BEING ABLE TO SOLVE PROBLEMS FOR PEOPLE.”

realproducersmag.com

North DFW Real Producers • 23

“Michael is an inspiration to me, and he’s a huge help in growing my business,” she says. “He gives me a lot of tips on marketing ideas and even comes with me to showings. He is super knowledgeable. He owns a roofing company and an HVAC company.” In her free time, Laine is very active, enjoying the outdoors, yoga, cooking, baking, watching movies, taking road trips, camping, boating, or renting an RV for exploration. Giving back is also central to her character. Laine has been very involved as a volunteer and as a fundraiser for Genesis Women’s Shelter. In addition, Laine also volunteers for the SPCA as a big animal lover. She has a Chihuahua-Shih Tzu mix named Babi. As Laine considers the impact of what she is able to help her clients achieve, it begins with a desire to solve problems. “I love putting the pieces together, and I work well under pressure,” she says. “For me, it’s about being able to solve problems for people. People often move because of changing life circumstances. I like giving them hope for what their lives can be after that. Bad times don’t last forever. Good times don’t last forever either. That’s part of life. It’s finding the silver lining in everything. Hopefully, through what I’m able to help people with, I can give them an even better perspective for their lives.” 24 • February 2021

DARE to lead Written by: Dave Danielson

Action-Oriented Results Our communities rely on a blend of all types of people … leaders, planners, contributors, and supporters. One of those we’re proud to feature this month, who is a true behind-the-scenes star, is Lindsey Knight. As Director of Sales for the DARE Network, Lindsey makes a powerful impact each day — achieving true, action-oriented results. Getting Her Start

Denton Aguam is CEO and Founder of the DARE Network with Keller Williams. He has seen Lindsey’s evolution in the business, as well as the far-reaching results she helps those around her achieve. “Lindsey has been part of the team for the past eight years, since 2012,” Denton remembers. “She was my first agent that I ever got into business with. She started with me as a Buyer’s Agent, and, before that, I helped her and her husband buy a house as my clients.” The DARE Network has three divisions, including Sales, Operations, and Inside Sales. In Lindsey’s role as Director of Sales, she leads the Sales division, working with a team of six sales professionals. “When I met first Lindsey, I’d say she was fairly quiet. She is quite the opposite now,” Denton smiles. “I remember giving her Gary Keller’s The Millionaire Real Estate Agent book and said ‘If you’re thinking about going into the business, you should read this.’ She showed up, having read the whole book, and saying that she was definitely ready to go.” Integral to Success

Denton emphasizes that Lindsey is an integral part of the success of the dynamic team that makes up the DARE Network. “We see that difference day-after-day,” Denton emphasizes. “She makes sure that agents are hitting their specific goals. In my role, I help agents find out what they want to achieve and the goals they want to meet. Then, Lind-

sey works with them to help them stay on track and get there. Plus, she also sells real estate herself. In fact, during her first year she sold around 40 homes. She is truly an action-oriented person.” Lindsey’s appetite to learn and grow has served those around her very well. “From the beginning, it meant a lot to me to see the way Lindsey saw the vision I had for the DARE Network and the way she bought into it,” Denton recalls. “She definitely has a strong drive. I knew she would be one of the greatest implementers of our vision. So, it was a natural fit to move her from her role as Buyer’s Agent to Sales Manager. She has grown individually and also in terms of what she has done for the DARE Network. I wouldn’t be where I am today without her.” Powerful Influence

Away from work, Lindsey adores time with her family, including her husband, Austin, and their two children — their son, Grayson, and their daughter, Harper. Denton also sees the impact Lindsey has on the lives of the six sales professionals on the team, including Nick Biggs, Bonnie Allen, Maryanne Jolley, Jennifer Fancher, Parker Davidson, and Ashley Lewis. “These six talented individuals are not just random agents. They are people who want to build big lives,” Denton says. “Our model isn’t to have 100 agents who each do a small number of deals. We like having a smaller number of agents who each have ambitions of doing 100 deals.”

Team Praise

It’s an understatement to say that each of the six team members are big fans of Lindsey and the difference she makes. “I’ve worked with Lindsey for seven years. Her leadership provides accountability, the willingness to have tough, direct conversations, and a true commitment to the success of her people. She is truly interested in her people’s personal growth,” Nick says. “The growth I’ve seen in Lindsey, both professionally and personally, over the last seven years is truly impressive. From starting out eight years ago to simply replacing a teacher’s salary, to driving to be one of the most successful and respected in the industry, it has been inspiring to watch her. Her ability to network and make connections both locally and in her sphere of influence, as well as across the country, is something unique and special. I am definitely a better person for having her as a friend and a business partner.” Bonnie Allen has worked with Lindsey for three years. “I know Lindsey will always push for the best for the team. She knows the importance of accountability and will drive through the uncomfortable to get the most out of those she is leading. She is quick-thinking and has the ability to communicate objectives and influence those around her,” Bonnie explains. “Lindsey strives to do the best, and be the best, at all aspects in her life. You can see the evidence with her parenting, her friendships, and in her marriage. Her ability to counterbalance being all things is a step above.” Through the five-and-a-half years Maryanne Jolley has worked with Lindsey, she appreciates Lindsey’s genuine, fun-to-be-around nature. “Lindsey is someone I know I could go to if I had to talk something through — professionally or personally. I appreciate the multiple hats she 34 • February 2021

wears as an agent, leader of other agents, and someone I work with in a service capacity as well,” Maryanne says. “I appreciate that Lindsey trusts me enough to fully do every aspect of my job. Love that I get to take a load off her plate while she’s either helping lead the team or drumming up more business. I also love her no-BS personality. You know where you stand with her, and what you see is what you get. I appreciate that in a co-worker, leader, and a friend.” Jennifer Fancher feels the strong impact of being able to work with Lindsey over the past four years, as well. “One of the things I appreciate the most about Lindsey is the fact that she has helped me grow as an agent, and she has pushed me to think bigger in my goals,” Jennifer says. “She stands strong on the vision of the team and supports the agents to help them reach their goals.” Though having only had the opportunity to work with Lindsey for the past ten months, Parker Davidson appreciates her experience.

“Her quick thinking skills help me with my problems or issues that I have, when I have no clue how to get around. Her ability to keep me mentally grounded when things aren’t going well are also great,” Parker says. “She has a go-getter mentality, she makes you feel comfortable when you speak to her, and she always has a positive outlook on everything. Lindsey has been a tremendous plus to my business and my growth in real estate.” Ashley Lewis started working with Lindsey on Good Friday in 2015. “She is not only encouraging and an outstanding leader, but she is also not afraid to have the hard conversations when needed. She has helped me to grow in not only my career but my personal life, as well, and has pushed me to be the best version of myself and to not settle for being ordinary,” Ashley emphasizes. “2020 was a very difficult year for all of us. I truly saw Lindsey step up her leadership skills even more so than she already had and really led the sales team during the dark time. Even when I was having my worst day, she was always the first to call or text and say, ‘How can I help?’ I really feel like she is the only reason I kept going this past year, and I will forever be grateful for her.” Clearly, Lindsey Knight is a leader in every aspect of the word. We’re proud to shine the spotlight on her achievements … and her action-oriented results.

Each day, you work tirelessly to help your clients reach their dreams. That’s why it means so much when you work with someone who has that same approach to work and life.

That’s where the team at Results Roofing enters the picture — coming alongside you and your clients and getting the job at hand done — in the right way. Dustin Gutkowski is the Owner of Results Roofing. As he says, he and his team stay focused on the big picture. “Our number one thing is we want to help buyers buy, and sellers sell, regardless. We feel good

when we know that our work has helped real estate transactions go through,” Dustin emphasizes. “We’re relational … not transactional. In the process, we know that doing the right thing helps everyone.” Protecting People and Their Homes

Dustin first entered the business based on his desire to protect and help people.

“When someone trusts us to work on their home, that’s not something that we take lightly,” he says. “There are a lot of horror stories with contractors that we’ve all heard about. That’s one of the reasons I got into it. Being able to truly help people and our REALTOR® partners is very meaningful for us. They become like friends and family to us in the process. The ability to be able to help people protect their most important asset is greater than any monetary result.” Record of Results Dustin and his wife, Albana, with their sons Conor (3) and Kobe (6 mon)

realproducersmag.com

When Dustin entered the roofing business, he brought a substantial record of results with him from another industry, where he was the President of a fitness

company responsible for managing 30 gyms and 1,500 employees. He’s applied those same lessons learned to the work he and his team do today. “I wanted to take a different direction. I had thought about a few ventures. At the time, one of my friends who owned a roofing company asked me to come on board with him,” Dustin recalls. “That intrigued me. I realized I had visions and dreams of my own, and I had a clear vision of what I wanted to do.” Crucial Crossroads

There are moments in life that are pivotal and defining. Dustin remembers the way Results Roofing was born. North DFW Real Producers • 41

“I was looking at Facebook, and some memories were generated from the platform. As I looked back, the images I saw were about results. That was the common element,” he says. “And it wasn’t about money. It was about getting results for clients, as well as in life.” As Dustin says, each step represents a direction in life. “Everything we do is either moving us forward or backward. And I wanted to continue reaching results,” Dustin says. “I remember thinking about that as I was driving down the highway. It hit me immediately. I pulled over on the side of the road and drew out the logo and the name for Results Roofing.” A Growing Presence

Today, Results Roofing is a true team venture, with 35 professionals located in offices here, and in Houston, including senior management, project managers, staff, and crews. “I took a lot of the successful strategies from my past background and have applied them here, and it feels good to see the fact that we work as a well-oiled machine,” Dustin points out. “I’m not a boss in this business. I feel like I really work for our employees. I like being in the trenches with them. Getting out there with the guys is the best part of what we do. I love what we do. In fact, I’m obsessed with this.” In the process of getting things done, the path to get there is just as important. 42 • February 2021

“What works is being authentic. We run our business the way we want to. There are always voices from the outside, but I don’t let the outside creep into what we’re doing,” he says. “When a decision needs to be made, I always think about what is best for our customers, our team members, and our company. I want whatever is done to be best for everyone.” Fulfilling Life

Away from work, Dustin enjoys time with his wife, Albana, and their children — 3-year-old Conor and 6-month-old Kobe. In his free time, Dustin is a big collector of sports cards and sports memorabilia, especially for the Lakers and Dodgers. He also looks forward to time spent hanging out with his family. Those who work with Dustin and the team at Results Roofing can count on a straightforward approach. “The people we work with count on us to give them our honest, professional advice,” Dustin explains. “And that’s what we do. We’re all about making an impact over income. In the process, our integrity is paramount. We take care of those we work with to the best of our ability.” That’s what it looks like when you get things done by doing it the right way. Mark & Jennifer

ROBERTSON B e t t e r To g e t h e r

Each of us has the potential to make great things happen in life. But when we find someone we can join forces with, our efforts become magnified — and the rewards increase exponentially. Two people who live this example are Mark and Jennifer Robertson. Beginning Their Journey Together

As Real Estate Consultants with the Robertson Team, Mark and Jennifer are better together on the path they share in real estate. Jennifer earned her license 19 years ago, followed 16 years ago by Mark. As Jennifer recalls, “Mark and I met at Oklahoma State University during our freshman year in college. Out of college, I worked for Southwestern Bell as part of the AT&T system, and Mark worked for a copier company and then he was very early in the telecom industry for wireless.” By 1997, Mark and Jennifer were both working for AT&T. At the time, they were relocated to Dallas from Oklahoma City. In 2001, Jennifer endured a downsizing. She considered her next steps forward. “At the time, our daughter Ashley was 14 and our son Brock was 12, and I didn’t want to get back into the telecom rat race. So, I took my first real estate class,” Jennifer remembers. “At that time, Brock was very good friends with David and Dana Winans’ son, Austin.” It wasn’t long before Jennifer joined Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate – WINANS. In 2004, Mark joined her. “I saw the success Jen had for three years and saw her spirit change from corporate America, to being her own boss, to achieving success on her own,” Mark remembers.

46 • February 2021

“AT&T offered some retirement packages. In the summer of 2004, I went to night class to get my real estate courses knocked out, and over the next year, I got my start in the business.” Through time, Mark and Jennifer have built their business together by helping others. As Mark says, “The drive we have for what we do is about the joy we get in meeting new people and helping them … being servants for them and approaching things with an open heart and doing the right things.” Their path has been truly rewarding. “One of my favorite parts along the way is always having things go under contract and, until the pandemic in 2020, being at the closing table was rewarding. I’ve missed being there in person,” Jennifer says. “What’s really rewarding is the fact that we have some very dear friends … not just clients … but true friends that we have made through our experiences. That means a lot to us.” What Matters Most

Away from work, Mark and Jennifer’s world is centered around their children, Ashley and Brock. Brock and his wife, Scholle, have two children — 4-year-old Maggie and 2-year-old Annie, with one more new arrival on the way. @realproducers

At the same time, Ashley plays a big part in Mark and Jennifer’s lives each day. “Ashley was born premature and had a stroke at birth. As a result, she is mentally and physically handicapped,” Jennifer says. “One of the very important things to us is the fact that Ashley is so incorporated into our business. She is our best closer.” One of the highlights for the Robertsons through time is the annual Ashley’s Buddies Charity Golf Tournament that Mark kicked off in 2009. As Jennifer says, “It’s amazing to see how it has grown with our son and daughter-in-law and their friends … from 40 family members in the beginning, to now 144 people who take part in the tournament raising money for Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital.” “When we moved here, for the first six years here, Ashley got services from the hospital. We thought they would be a great beneficiary of an effort like this,” Mark says. “It’s a cool day where she can circulate and take pictures.” Mark remembers how the golf tournament first came into being. “One of my passions is golfing. Years ago, I took Ashley one day to The Tribute course. It’s a really cool golf course in a community that’s out on a peninsula,” Mark says. “We were out there on the course, and we get to the second tee box. There was a gentleman heading off the tee, and he asked if we wanted to join him. His name was Chuck. I always like to meet people that way. At that moment, a golf cart person pulled up selling beverages, and he asked Ashley if she wanted a drink (Chuck used to represent Coke in his career), and he bought Ashley a Coke. Ashley got into his cart for the rest of the round. We had a great time and spent time with Chuck after our round in the clubhouse. As we talked, he asked if we had ever thought about having a tournament. That’s how it started. And ever since then, Ashley has loved the event. She drives the cart, enjoys listening to music, and having a Coke.” 48 • February 2021

Jennifer, Ashley, and Mark Robertson

Through time, the tournament has raised an estimated $265,000 for the Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital. 40 Years of Partnership

Mark and Jennifer have been married 40 years. Together, they enjoy travel, with destinations often revolving around a golf destination. The Robertsons are also both huge fans of their beloved Oklahoma State Cowboys. They also live a life that revolves around faith. “We very much approach working with our clients from a very strong place of integrity and Christian faith. We want to do the right thing, and we have had some very unique opportunities through time. When you just decide to share who you are genuinely and to let people know we have a special needs child, and they turn around and tell us about their experiences, as well,” Jennifer says. “We feel that Jesus has led us to people because we are willing to open up our hearts, and we are very blessed.

Ashley is beautiful. She is an incredible part of our life and has expanded our world and made it so much more meaningful.” Those who know Mark and Jennifer see their sincere, professional approach. “Integrity is at the forefront of life and business for us. It’s always vital for us to represent our clients’ best interests. We look for the win-win with collaboration and negotiation. That’s how we like to approach life.” Clearly, Mark and Jennifer are a caring couple who demonstrate each day that they are better together — and their clients are better off for the experience of working with them.

CCAR: in the know Written by: Bri Westbury, Content Specialist at the Collin County Association of Realtors (CCAR)

H AT E W I L L N O T B E

TOLERATED On June 10, 2020 the Collin County Association of REALTORS® (CCAR) released a statement against racism, titled “Racism Has No Home Here.” In the statement, CCAR said: “As a REALTOR®, Article 10 of our Code of Ethics demands that we do not discriminate against any person or persons on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity.” However, under the Code of Ethics at that time, there was no consequence for a REALTOR® who shared hate speech or harassing language outside of real estate-related activities. That changed on Nov. 13, 2020, when the National Association of REALTORS’® (NAR) Board of Directors approved Standard of Practice 105, effective immediately. realproducersmag.com

Why effective immediately instead of Jan. 1, 2021? “We decided there was no reason to give someone an additional 45 days to get this [hate] out of their system,” said Leigh York, 2020 Chair of NAR’s Professional Standards Interpretations and Procedures Advisory Board in a recent interview on the “Welcome to the Top” podcast. “We wanted to make a statement, and the Board of Directors agreed.” Standard of Practice 10-5 REALTORS® must not use harassing speech, hate speech, epithets, or slurs based on race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

not fair to our members. None of our members, nor their clients should have to experience that. I feel really good about we’ve done.” NAR will enforce the new guidelines the same way the Code of Ethics has always been enforced. York recommends that if someone witnesses an offense, they first utilize the service of an ombudsman. If the use of an ombudsman does not rectify the situation, a formal complaint can be filed. That complaint will go to the Grievance Committee, which will evaluate the offense to determine if it meets the definition of hate speech, harassing speech, an epithet, or slur. If it does, the Committee will then identify if the offense was directed toward a protected class. If it was, the complaint proceeds to a hearing where an appointed ethics panel will hear both sides. NAR has scheduled monthly professional standards trainings that will break down the changes to the Code of Ethics. Visit www.nar.realtor/ events/breaking-down-the-changes-to-the-code to register for your training.

NAR’s approval of Standard of Practice 10-5, isn’t something that was done in haste. “It’s not something that came about as quickly as many people feel like, it S O U T H L A K E S TA G E C O A C H was already on our radar,” said York. Oc c u p i ed Stag i n g | Vacan t St ag in g | H ome Renovat ion In fact, York reports that in the past there would be one to two complaints a year about hate speech. Then, things began to change. “In 2019 those complaints went up exponentially. And then in 2020, January 1 through the end of October they went up 9,000% over 2019,” said York. “And that’s just NAR, we have no idea what local and state were receiving. We know the problem was getting worse instead of better.” York acknowledges that it was not the majority of REALTORS® participating in the spread of hate speech. She likens it to one bully souring an entire school for a kid. “It’s like being a kid at school and one person is picking on you and it can feel like the world. And that’s

How Money Really Works In any path through life, it helps to have someone caring and experienced who’s there to provide guidance and support. Two leaders in the local landscape who fit that description are Bryan Linder and Bronwyn Osburn. As Agency Owners with WealthWave, a Transamerica company, Bryan and Bronwyn have developed a cutting-edge, digital platform that teaches people from all walks the financial concepts needed to accomplish financial goals. “Fundamentally, we teach people how money works. In fact, we’ve trademarked the term How Money Works TM. Most REALTORS® and Brokers made the leap to become an entrepreneur and go into business on their own,” Bryan says. “Some have learned how to handle finances through the school of hard knocks or from a reliable mentor; others are on a path and little to no education on how to begin this endeavor. Linder goes on to say, ‘We’re going to help you with that transition: how to track your expenses, the proper way to set up your company, along with lowering taxation and giving you strategies for saving money in the retirement account that meets your goals. Plus, we also educate on long-term care, disability, life, and health insurance needs.’” Filling a Vital Need

“Most of us weren’t taught about financial concepts nor entrepreneurship growing up. Many don’t have someone in their direct circle that can teach them the proper steps,” Bryan says. “We don’t charge for what we do. We educate. We don’t sell. We take the approach that money is simply a tool, and in many cases, it’s learning how to use that tool for your betterment. ‘You work hard for your money. Don’t you want your money to work just as hard for you?’ We want to help them reach their milestones along the way. REALTORS® are a great example of the American Dream. They are so busy. They sometimes can’t dedicate the time it takes to research all of this information. We can be that resource for them to provide needed support in all financial areas.” As an independent insurance brokerage, and in partnership with Transamerica Financial Advisors, Bronwyn and Bryan represent over 350 different companies in the financial services industry, including American Funds, Fidelity, Vanguard, Nationwide, Pacific Life, and many others. “We broker for our clients,” Bronwyn says. “We want to build this relationship with REALTORS®. When they know they can trust us to build this road map, they can feel comfortable to refer their friends and family to us as well.” They believe there is no ‘onesize-fits-all’ product or strategy when it comes to finances. Just as your fingerprint is unique to you, so, too is your financial planning. Personal Impact

This power couple’s impact comes through loud and clear on a personal level. “We really enjoy sitting down with individuals. My favorite part of the process is when they realize they aren’t the only ones who don’t know where to put their money and what to do with it. There is a significant portion of the world population that’s the same. In fact, financial illiteracy is the largest economic issue realproducersmag.com

in the world affecting over five billion people,” Bronwyn emphasizes. “There is hope at the end of the tunnel, and we enjoy educating them on how many options there are. Many misunderstand the importance of starting early and that the best time to start saving is today. It’s the educational part of what we do and the hope we see on their faces when we show them a written plan to hit their goals.” Bryan wholeheartedly agrees, “It’s that lightbulb moment during the financial conversation … when they say, ‘No one ever told me that. I never knew that.’ It blows you away. Our educational system in the U.S. isn’t teaching personal finance. We’re not empowering people to know, and how to make, the right decisions with their money. When we work with someone, we want to get a baseline of where they are and then we build on that and see where we can fill in.” Sharing Opportunities with REALTORS®

In addition to helping clients with the products they represent, Bronwyn, Bryan, and WealthWave also clear the path ahead for those who want to get their financial license and join the WealthWave crusade themselves. “The licensed agent count in our industry is shrinking, while real estate is growing. We decided to put the real estate model of broker/ agents into operation in the financial services industry,” Bronwyn says. “In fact, we are one of the fastest-growing agencies in North America. There are over 56,000 licensed agents in the company across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico.” Bryan and Bronwyn’s agency has roughly 2,000 agents operating in their division WealthWave – Legacy. They mentor, license, and train new representatives from any background to begin a career, part-time or full-time, in financial services. Their passion for what they do comes through clearly. As Bronwyn says, “We take people who haven’t been in the financial services industry before, regardless of race, gender, or educational background, and offer them a chance to own a business in the largest industry in the world. We have amazing people like teachers, doctors, CPAs, mortgage brokers, stay-home mothers/fathers, and REALTORS® who have made the decision to help us make sure no one is left behind when it comes to financial literacy. We train them, personally, from the ground up to help them build their business.” “I’ve helped many REALTORS® add revenue to their current business by attaining additional state licenses to help better serve their clients. By adding these tools to their tool belt, they can offer many products they are currently referring away and missing out on additional revenue streams,” Bryan says. “As their clients move or relocate from a different state all their finances follow, and many will want a local representative. That’s where we can help as a solid partner.”

Inspiring Examples

Clearly, Bronwyn and Bryan provide a sound financial example. But that’s just the start. They also are an inspiring example of life lived well together. In their free time, Bryan and Bronwyn enjoy traveling and golf. They also make it a priority to give back to their community. Each year, they host the “Live Your Legacy” golf and sand volleyball tournament that benefits local charities. Made for This

Bryan grew up around the financial business. His father started an insurance agency in the back of his Purina Feed Store in the late 1970s in downtown Austin, Texas. After eight years working in corporate America as AVP of Marketing, Bryan obtained his license in 2002 and began the journey to own his own agency. The year 2021 marks Bryan’s 19th year licensed in the industry. Bronwyn’s path is very different. Upon immigrating from South Africa in 2009, she was a stay-at-home mother of two and had small startup businesses while she cared for her children. After going through a divorce, she made the decision to move into a full-time financial services career. As Bronwyn says, “I learned about WealthWave through Bryan’s parents. When I realized the concepts they taught could really help me personally, I immediately thought of all those women that were struggling just as I had been. That’s when I made the decision to get licensed and help grow the women’s division of WealthWave – Legacy.” Joining Together

Bryan and Bronwyn exemplify the term “Power Couple.” They do everything together. Family is at the heart of their world. Their blended family includes five children—19-year-old son Jake, 16-year-old daughter Allyson, 13-year-old daughter Kate, 12-year-old son Arkillian, and 9-year-old daughter Zephyra. “It’s so different being in a relationship where you do everything together. We are both individual people with separate personal goals, but having this experience together with WealthWave makes life rewarding as a couple. We aren’t saying goodbye each day and going separate ways … we are planning, working, training, traveling, eating … practically everything together. The conversations never get dull. We both have the same vision for our business, and it is an unexplainable feeling.” 60 • February 2021

Leslie Stacey

W H E R E T H E H E A RT I S

Taking action in life is important, but adding real purpose to drive that action makes a lasting impact. That’s what those who work with Stacey Leslie experience. As Team Leader and REALTOR® of The Agency with eXp, Stacey proves her passion for helping people find their forever homes. It’s where her heart is at. Moving Forward in Life

Before she entered the industry eight years ago, Stacey had gained much valuable experience and expertise in life and business. “I got married at age 20, and I had two kids by the time I was 22 and was a single parent for 18 years,” Stacey recalls. “I went to work at a Fortune 500 marketing company.” While there, Stacey ran the company’s data processing division. In time, she branched out on her own and ran her own marketing company for more than nine years. 66 • February 2021

Reaching a Crossroads

Life and business were demanding. In turn, Stacey’s health suffered. “My doctor said I needed to get out of my line of work at the time,” she remembers. “So I sold my company, I met my husband, Joe Cavanaugh, and I moved here with my two kids to Dallas. We dated for ten years and got married three years ago.” From there, Stacey says she concentrated on her children for a couple of years before coming back to an interest she had years earlier during her time in college. “I had taken some real estate classes in college and really loved them,” she says. “When I got my license and entered the business here, I didn’t know anyone other than my now husband. They talked about going after my sphere, but my sphere wasn’t here.” Yet Stacey kept her head down and kept working hard and moving for-

ward, working open houses and taking every opportunity she could to learn and grow. “I just started to get involved in everything in our neighborhood … and I would also do things like going out in the area, and not coming back until I had talked with three people,” Stacey says. “I got my license and started with Keller Williams and went through three months of training.” Beginning with Her Best

It’s no surprise that the love Stacey feels for real estate begins with people. “I love the people I get to know and work with and getting wins for others. It means a lot knowing I helped them manage their largest financial asset and making sure we protect that for them,” Stacey says. “I love the thrill of negotiating and seeing how happy our clients are when you get them to the closing table or sell their home for the right dollar amount.” @realproducers

Signs of Success

Through time, Stacey’s signs of success have been astounding. During her first full year in the business in 2014, she recorded $7 million in sales volume, helping 18 families. Today, Stacey and her team continue to help more and more area residents. In fact, in 2020, they amassed $40 million in sales volume, representing 140 deals. “I think one of the factors that have contributed a lot to our success is the marketing background that Joe and I have,” Stacey says. “A lot of our marketing efforts revolve around events. We also look at internet stats daily and make sure all our listings stay at the top of the syndicated sites and know exactly how many views and clicks it takes to get x number of showings in each neighborhood.” 68 • February 2021

Stacey is the first one to shine the spotlight on the members of her team of seven professionals, including five agents — Stacey, her daughter, Kelsey, Victoria, Tracey, and Hailee, who works as the team’s Client Concierge, plus a personal assistant and a marketing professional. Fulfilling Life

Away from work, Stacey’s world is grounded by Joe and their blended family, including Stacey’s children — 27-year-old son Cody, and 26-year-old daughter Kelsey, and Joe’s children — 19-year-old daughter, Hannah, and 18-year-old son, Connor. 70 • February 2021

Stacey and her friends are big fans of staying active outdoors, with favorites being pickleball, kayaking, tennis, hiking, and fishing. Building a stronger community is at the heart of who Stacey is, as well. She looks for ways to be involved in Frisco and the surrounding area, including with Little Elm School, helping out with the school’s food program. Building Ahead

As she considers the work she feels privileged to carry out with her clients and friends, Stacey applies a truly energetic approach.

“For me, it’s about just working hard and answering my phone. Family and God come first. But our clients are right up there,” Stacey says. “We want to be there for them in any way we can to support them as they trust us with the decisions around their largest assets.” As those who know her will testify, Stacey Leslie puts her clients’ interests at the forefront as she helps them find their home. After all, that’s where the heart is.

FENG SHUI for Remote Workspaces

home matters By Shauna Osborne

One of the many lessons 2020 delivered was that far more people can do their jobs from home than previously thought. Coffee in hand, makeshift “offices” set up in spare bedrooms, dens, and garages, Zoom-ready style from the waist up…we made it happen. And though some employees have returned to their office workspaces by now, nearly a year in, many continue to work remotely and will do so for the foreseeable future. Accordingly, it’s useful to turn attention to refining our evolving workspaces for maximum productivity and a harmonious mentality, applying the principles of feng shui. realproducersmag.com

Feng shui is the “practice of arranging the pieces in living spaces in order to create balance with the natural world.” As the distinct concepts of “living spaces” and “working spaces” have become blurred over the last year, our home’s natural boundaries have been compromised, which, according to the tenets of feng shui, results in a lack of productivity. Bringing the home workspace into alignment promises to bring prosperous energy, along with increased balance, focus, and inspiration. So, where to begin? With the fundamental requirements for an industrious workspace: a flat surface (generally, a desk, counter, or table) with minimal visible distractions. First, assess the distractions in the work environment, positioning yourself facing a mentally nondisruptive space — having, for example, dirty dishes, noisy children, or piles of laundry in your field of vision is overly distracting. Avoid facing a wall, if possible, as this represents facing obstacles in feng shui; similarly, avoid sitting directly in line with a door, which puts you in the path of any negative energy traveling into the room, and position your desk away from the door but mostly facing it, which is referred to as a “commanding position” in feng shui. This set-up signifies being open to receiving the visitors / business / positive energy entering the room rather than turning your back to it. Designate one area in the home as the space where work happens, rather than moving a laptop from one place to another, avoiding spaces our bodies associate with rest or relaxation (sofas and beds), which makes us more prone to drowse while working and / or less disposed to mentally release work stress at the end of the day. Incorporate natural light as much as possible. The work surface itself should be as clear and tidy as possible, with only necessities that add to your sense of ease, peace, and productivity, as feng shui suggests that a cluttered, messy workspace can impede creativity, blocking the flow of positive energy and prosperity into your room. A pen and paper, a glass of water, an air-purifying houseplant, and / or a family photo are all examples of positive additions to your work surface. Feng shui teaches that energy flows where our attention goes, so utilize these guiding principles to manifest the energy you desire for your home workspace. North DFW Real Producers • 75
