Every once in a while, opportunities come to us in life out of the blue. But most of the things that generate real pride and fulfillment are things we create.

One of those who knows all about that is Kate Walters. As a real estate agent with Compass, Kate Walters has the drive to thrive — in turn, reaching results for herself and those around her.

“My advice to those who are getting into this business is to just get out there,” Kate explains.

“Like my dad said, ‘If you work hard and you’re kind to people, good things will happen.

That work ethic is so important.”

GETTING HER START

Working hard has always been part of Kate’s DNA. For a while, that drive took her down a different path in life.

“I didn’t have any plans for real estate as I was starting my career,” she says. “Out of college, I wanted to get into broadcast journalism and worked with Fox Sports.”

At the end of 2010, Kate moved to join Allie Beth Allman & Associates. “The market still wasn’t that great, but I stayed focused and realized that was the time for learning the business. During the recession, when the market picked up in 2013, it was a whole new world.”

BUILDING BONDS

Her approach is purely powered by her care for people.

While she was there, Kate met Timm Matthews.

“Timm recruited me to help him to start a local sports publication. It was a group of four of us who started it. It was wild. It was 2009, and I was trying to sell ads during the recession.”

“I'm very social, and I love the feeling of being able to help people out. That’s the foundation of it,” Kate explains.

She draws on other skills she’s honed through time and experience.

CRUCIAL CONVERSATION

During that time, Kate had what proved to be a pivotal conversation.

As Kate remembers, “It was hard. I was trying to sell an ad to a local real estate agent, and he said, ‘Have you ever thought about real estate? I think you’d be really good at it. Besides, no one is going to buy ads right now, but people will still need a home.’”

The conversation struck a chord with Kate.

“My dad helped me pay for my classes while I was working at the magazine,” she says. “That was early 2009, and the economy was terrible. So I focused on leases, and I did 75 the first year. Didn’t make a lot from that, but I worked hard, and it was a great learning opportunity for me.”

In the process, Kate also worked hard to build her client base.

“The first two or three years, I was just trying to keep building the clientele base and not focus on the numbers,” she says. “By years three and four, the people who I had helped with leases started buying their first homes and then, after another three or four years, some of them were ready to sell, and I had the opportunity to keep working with them along the way.”

“I like the negotiation part of the business and have fine-tuned that through the years. I can read people and situations really well,” Kate says. “Forming those relationships is important to me, not just with clients, but also with inspectors and other top agents. It’s about the networking and staying involved.”

The results of her committed efforts have been impressive. In fact, in 2020, she recorded over $50 million in sales volume, transacting 77 deals.

FAMILY FOUNDATION

Away from work, Kate enjoys time with her husband, Will, and their two daughters — 5-year-old Emery and 3-year-old Bo. In their free time, Kate and Will like to get out of town and travel as often as they can. And yet, they also cherish the sense of home that has been part of their plans all along.

“We’re both from Dallas, and both of our families are within a few miles of us. We decided that we wanted to live close to our families,” she says.

They also enjoy exploring new restaurants and working on building their home that they just moved into.

“Moving, in general, is exhausting. I have a lot of empathy for my clients and the process that they go through,” she explains.

Giving back is also at the top of the list. Kate is on the board at Lakewood Country Club. They’re also active in their church, Munger Place, and support Lakewood Elementary. Kate and Will also serve on the Young Friends Board of the Wilkinson Center and have for four years.

“We worked on the Membership Committee and on raising awareness,” Kate says. “The organization does such a good job lifting Dallas families out of poverty with their GED and job search programs. They also have a food pantry.”

MADE FOR THIS

When you talk with Kate, the passion she has for her work comes through clearly.

“My assistant, Cammie Thevenet, and I take pride in going above and beyond to make sure people have the best experience possible,” Kate emphasizes. “What we do isn’t about the numbers. It’s about maintaining that relationship.”

As you know, this business isn’t easy.

But achieving something worthwhile rarely is.

“It’s a crazy, very demanding, high-pressure job. But I thrive on it,” she smiles. “I can’t imagine doing anything else.”

That’s the drive to thrive.

“In high school, I won some awards for my artwork,” Cliff remembers.

“When it was time for my next step, I was offered a scholarship to USC for art, but I decided to attend UMKC in Kansas City and UCLA, majoring in psychology and theatre performance.

Along the way, I decided I wanted to go into film."

Time passed, and Cliff became immersed in the industry, gaining success, landing roles in TV and film productions, and even being part of “the Groundlings School,” a renowned program producing a steady stream of talent for premier shows like SNL (including Mikey Day, Kristen Wigg, Will Ferrell, and others).

A New Role. Rewarding Results.

As time passed, Cliff developed a growing interest in real estate. After a few years in the entertainment industry, he attended UCLA and studied real estate finance, which led to him getting his real estate license in California. There, his interests and expertise converged.

for people to live and to call their home. I really like seeing the impact on an area, too, going in and fixing up a couple of houses in a neighborhood and seeing the difference it makes.”

Cliff’s heartfelt approach has created an astounding level of success. In fact, he averages $15 to $20 million and 30 transactions a year. In the process, Cliff is licensed in Texas, California, Georgia, and Louisiana, with an ultimate goal of taking his business further into the international market in resort locations.

Life’s Highlights

Away from work, Cliff treasures time with his family, including his wife, Paige.

"Paige went to design school at the prestigious Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM). She definitely takes my interior design to a superior level. She can see a space, and she knows how to change it to really make it work."

Cliff and Paige look forward to time spent with their two children — 13-year-old son Maverick and 9-year-old son Tucker.

In their free time, Cliff and his family are busy with the kids’ activities, including hockey. They also like to have karaoke parties. Cliff also enjoys playing the piano and guitar. They’re also very involved in the Highland Park University Methodist Church.

“My first listing was for Brad Pitt’s manager’s house,” Cliff recalls. “When I showed up to talk with him, he explained that I shouldn’t be surprised if I saw Brad coming over to play a game of ping pong. They shared an acreage and a horse trail between their properties. On the other side of the street was Garth Brooks’ house.”

As Cliff grew in the business, he also built a team with Keller Williams in Seal Beach, California — a team he continues to guide today.

At Home in Texas

About five and a half years ago, Cliff and his family moved to Texas, and he joined the team at Allie Beth Allman & Associates.

Giving back is central to their lives, also. Each Thanksgiving, Cliff and Paige and their sons get meals and deliver them to area residents in need.

"My grandfather worked in the White House, and my dad was in the military," Cliff explains. "Their sense of duty, giving back, and being a good person has made a big impact on me. I try to instill those same things in my kids' lives."

Life of Purpose

Those who know Cliff understand the deep sense of purpose he puts to work for others.

From the start, Cliff’s star in the business has been on the rise, and it’s driven by a genuine passion for what he does.

“My main point in all of this is to create a win-win and to help people get to the finish line,” Cliff emphasizes. “My goal is doing what I can to make the deal happen and to help my clients get what they want, whether I’m representing the buyer or seller … at the same time, ensuring that both sides feel good.”

From Dream to Reality

Stonebriar Moving Services is led by Tyler and Ashley Edwards, who first met 10 years ago. It wasn’t long before they realized that they wanted to be on the same path in life — and in business.

As Ashley says, “It was clear right away that we had great chemistry. And then we decided on a moving company because Tyler was working in moving when I met him. Tyler has a really strong entrepreneurial spirit, so I said, ‘Let's buy a truck and start a moving company.’ That's what we did, and it worked!"

Tyler has a passion for the business.

"Before we started this business, I traveled the country, and I slept in the moving truck," he says with a smile. "I moved all kinds of motorcycles, cars, ATVs, antiques, and full homes all the way from Washington to California.”

When Tyler and Ashley first started their moving business, they quickly found a niche serving the city’s uptown and downtown apartments.

“We really specialized in that for the first three years, and then we decided to rebrand and open Stonebriar Moving Services and started to focus more on homes in 2015,” Tyler says. “We still do condos, apartments, townhomes, and offices in between, but I wanted the brand to be known more.

So, we started marketing more to REALTORS®.”

Growth through Quality

The results have been impressive. Today, Stonebriar Moving Services runs as many as 10 to 15 trucks during the summer, including a moving staff of 25 team members.

The power of teamwork is unmistakable. And when that teamwork is based on consistency and longevity, the results are magnified.

“We have a core of about 12 guys who have been with us for five or six years,” Ashley says. “And the really cool thing is that in the summer when we get busy, we have the same guys who come back and work for us in the summertime time and time again. We have a really good relationship with all of our guys, and they are at the center of our really good culture. Our team does an excellent job for our clients.”

As Tyler says, communication is key to moving forward together.

“I tell them ‘Thank you’ every day. Without them, we obviously couldn’t be as successful,” Tyler says with a smile. “We want them to be the best version of themselves. And they really do an awesome job.

With the group of team members that we have now, I’m able to focus on meeting with prospective clients and partners and booking additional projects.”

Ashley agrees.

“When our team members come to your client's home, they're going to really take care of them,” she says. “In turn, we want to do whatever we can to support them. They know how much what they do supports our relationships with both our partners and clients and they want to do whatever they can to support that.”

Better Together

One of the most rewarding parts of what Tyler and Ashley do is working with each other.

“Tyler is my best friend. People ask about us working together all the time. They say, ‘You guys are always together, you work out together, you travel together, and you have your free time,’” Ashley recalls. “But there really aren’t a lot of challenges, because we've been together for so long.”

In their free time, Tyler and Ashley look forward to spending as much time as they can with their three children.

As they consider the growth they’ve created together at Stonebriar Moving Services, and they think about what lies ahead, they look forward to continued expansion.

As Ashley says, “We would like to see it at 25 trucks, but we want to grow at a pace where we can keep the same high level of service. In the meantime, we’re going to go slow and make sure that everything is taken care of along the way.”
