Jeanes cover story

By Dave Danielson Photos by URSPECIALS

Like many industries, residential real estate is a business that has many statistics which people use to gauge the activity and success of the individuals active in the field. Among those are annual sales volume, together with the number of transactions closed each year. Simone Jeanes, who serves as an Executive Vice President and REALTOR® with Allie Beth Allman & Associates, has earned her full share of those accolades. And those accolades underscore her lifelong drive to help others through real estate. While some take a while to enter into a real estate career, Simone counts herself as one of the few who came to the industry early in life. “I’m celebrating my 40th year in the business,” Simone says. “When I was a junior in college at UT, I earned my real estate license. I started working for a real estate firm as an intern in Austin. I often worked Fridays and Saturdays during my junior and senior years at UT. Then, after I graduated, I promptly moved back to Dallas and have been active in the industry here ever since.”

Simone’s daughter, who is an accomplished equestrian and her licensed assistant, Melanie Jeanes

Simone and her family

Full Speed Ahead “I was a business major at UT, and I was studying marketing. At the same time, I was taking real estate appraisal classes,” Simone remembers. “My father kept telling me I would be a natural in the real estate industry. And I listened to him because he was a life-long and successful salesman. I thought, Yes! I’ll try this. I know I can do this.”

Through the years, Simone continued to grow and lead, and eventually moved to Virginia Cook Realtors, finishing her last five years with Virginia as a Top Producer. “I remember Virginia sending me letters when I was in college recruiting me, and offering me the chance to work with her directly. She has been a tremendous mentor for me, and an extremely instrumental figure in my real estate career.”

Simone dove in from the start. “Since returning to Dallas from college, I have always been a full-time real estate agent,” she says. “I upgraded my license from salesperson status to broker status in the minimum time allowed by the Texas Real Estate Commission. Since college, I have been right here in the trenches, committed to this industry and this area.” Simone was recruited straight out of college by Virginia Cook, then president of the residential division of Henry S. Miller Realtors, and whom Simone considers her personal friend. Simone felt fortunate to be able to live with her parents while she made her transition into the business. And then, within a year or so after starting, Simone bought her own first house. And she finished her first 12 months as Rookie of the Year in the residential division of Henry S. Miller.

24 • April 2020

In early 2019, as Virginia Cook retired and closed her company, Simone moved to Allie Beth Allman & Associates, a company with which she feels honored to be associated as an officer. There, she was honored as one of the top individual producers in the company for 2019, both in dollar volume of sales and in the number of transactions closed. As Simone says, “I’m a native of Dallas. And so, I have friends here that I’ve known since childhood. Plus, marrying and raising two daughters in Dallas, I have met a lot of friends and peers through my activities as a wife and parent here.” In addition to working with friends and individuals on meeting their real estate requirements, Simone has a corporate side to her business. “I also have my relocation business,” she says. “I have been very fortunate to have earned the privilege of assisting Marriott for over 25 years, relocating their employees to and from this area. Among others, Simone has also served Nike, Coke, and Bacardi in the relocation arena, together with local prominent businesses, such as Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits.”

@realproducers

EVERY SINGLE CLIENT HAS A DEFINED GOAL. AND IT’S MEETING THOSE GOALS WITH INTEGRITY, CHARACTER, AND PROFESSIONALISM THAT DRIVES ME TO SUCCESS.

realproducersmag.com

Dallas Real Producers • 25

Covering the Distance Simone’s career is an example of excellence over time. “Doing this for so long, and performing at a recognized level, has really allowed me to experience and witness the cycles of real estate. And there have been many cycles,” Simone explains. “When I first got out of college, interest rates were over 18%. I worked through tremendous local real estate recessions in 1986 and 2008. I think experiencing those cycles gave me a time and value perspective from which I am now better able to assist my clients.” Simone feels blessed with her loving family, including her husband, Wesley Jeanes, and their two daughters, Meredith and Melanie. Meredith attended Georgetown University for her undergraduate and law studies and works as an attorney in Dallas. Melanie, who studied at Texas A&M and the University of Kentucky, is an accomplished equestrian and is also a licensed real estate agent working today with Simone. In her free time, Simone loves to cook, dine out, get together with friends, travel and listen to jazz. She also appreciates fine art and anything equestrian. Simone is a proud Dallas native who has been deeply involved in a wide range of local organizations and civic groups over time. “I’ve been here my whole life, and I think that with the new urban neighborhoods, arts facilities, restaurants and other quality of life assets which Dallas has built and accrued over the last twenty years, the Dallas-Fort Worth area has become an urban magnet on the national scene. I have never been more proud of this area, given what Dallas and the metroplex have to offer to residents and newcomers today.”

26 • April 2020

The personal drive which Simone has for her career is quite strong. As Simone says, “Every single client has a defined goal. And it’s meeting those goals with integrity, character, and professionalism that drives me to success. If I do my job well on a day-to-day basis and I am very passionate about it, success follows. Success for my clients, as well as for me and my family.” Along the way, Simone has enjoyed each mile of her professional journey.

@realproducers

“I really enjoy getting in the car and going out to the new towns and suburbs and subdivisions, learning them and helping families relocate to the Dallas-Fort Worth area. One of my favorite things is packing a cooler in my car with a whole bunch of snacks. We get in the car, and we go house hunting, and I want the kids involved, too. I want everybody included. And we have a great time with it.”

realproducersmag.com

We talk a lot about the lengths that REALTORS® go on behalf of their clients. In 2019, the odometer on Simone’s car added over 30,000 miles. Over the course of her 40 years in the business, Simone has covered nearly a million automotive miles in pursuit of her clients’ goals. Of course, the physical distance driven is just one measure of a career that Simone continues with passion and the pursuit of excellence … a true, lifelong drive for service and professionalism.

Tatum

HOOD Writing New Chapters rising star By Dave Danielson Photos by URSPECIALS

Think of the people you help each day. Every individual and family has their own story. And their new home sale or purchase is the start of a new chapter. Tatum Hood takes that role very seriously. As a Broker, Team Lead and Listing Expert with the Tatum Hood Home Selling Team with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, Tatum’s experience and energy are focused on making the transition the best it can be for a lot of reasons. “When I speak to a seller who may have had a home on the market from anywhere from six months to two years, it means a lot to take their listing and sell it in a relatively short time, and do it the right way,” Tatum emphasizes. “I like seeing the smile on their faces, closing that chapter in their lives, and restoring their faith in our industry.”

realproducersmag.com

Dallas Real Producers • 31

EARLY SPARKS

There were some early sparks of Tatum’s forthcoming real estate success as he came of age in Georgia. “I purchased my first home in August 2000. I was 21, and I bought it as a birthday present to myself,” he recalls. “And, of course, you never stop looking even after you buy a house. I remember going out and looking at other model homes with my wife.” Tatum’s mother-in-law knew his interest in the industry—and his talent for identifying opportunities. “She would say that she had clients looking for certain types of properties. I would be able to give her some ideas. In time, she said I should get into real estate,” he recalls. FINDING A NEW HOME

Eventually, Tatum earned his license, working two years as a buyer’s agent. In 2012, Tatum’s wife, Denicia, who works with the federal government, was transferred to Dallas. Soon, the move to Texas was complete, and Tatum earned his license there. “It took me a bit to get established here because my time was split for a while between Texas and Georgia.” Through time, Tatum worked with brokerages of different types and sizes—earning valuable experience along the way. In 2017, he was named RE/MAX DFW Associates REALTOR® of the Year, qualifying for Platinum Club every year. In addition, he earned the Visionary Award and Founding Partner Award in 2016 for Expert Advisor Home Services.

Dallas Real Producers • 33

LIFE’S PRIORITIES

Tatum is thankful for his wife, Denicia, who he met in 1996 when they were in high school. They’ve been together ever since and were married in 2002.

When Tatum takes time for his own hobbies, one of his favorites is flying as a pilot. Another is fishing. Traveling to Florida with his family is also a big favorite.

Tatum and his family also have a big place in their heart for giving back. They love children’s charities in general, and one of their favorites is St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

GENUINE RESOURCE

CONTINUOUS LEARNING

“I’m kind of a jokester,” he laughs. “I’m all about teaching, too. I like it when other agents reach out to me. And I always say to people that they can feel free to contact me if they ever want to talk. I like to support others, and it means a lot to me to see other people succeed.”

As a man of vision and action, Tatum challenges himself to achieve more. It’s the same approach he takes in the advice he offers for the next generation of REALTORS® who are considering a career in the business themselves. “Picking up the phone and reaching prospects is what drives success. I think you have to talk to 5 to 10 people per day at a minimum,” Tatum emphasizes. “That way, you get into a habit of talking with people you don’t know. Those numbers grow, and you get over that fear of talking to people.”

34 • April 2020

While he has a laser focus on the business, Tatum shares his genuine, fun nature with those around him.

Those who meet Tatum describe him as smart, witty, very trustworthy, and someone who left them better off than before they met him. And that’s what it’s all about in the process of helping others, listening to their needs, sharing our expertise, and being there for them when they need you the most — when they’re writing new chapters of success in their own lives.

we ask the questions, you submit your answers

What Is Your Craziest Real Estate Story?

“I was informed that the lender could not perform a second lien loan the day before closing, so my buyers were forced into doing a short-term lease with Lincoln Properties. The listing agent said to call her lender, so we did. Later that day, the lender said she could get a deal done in 48 hours. My buyers were able to get out of their lease and move into their new home the next day, and they were one happy family :)”

two dogs and elderly father in tow. Between trips, the slightly misaligned seller, who has sneakily held onto one of the keys, goes back to his condo to relive old memories, locking buyer out, but with the buyers’ dogs now inside, held hostage to said misalignment! A frantic day ensued until we lured the seller out, and promptly changed the locks.”

SCOTT JACKSON, COMPASS RE, LLC

“I left my job as a former Dallas police officer and got into real estate so I wouldn’t get shot at anymore. On my first ever showing, we walked into the home and the dishes were still on the counter, which was odd. We made our way to the master bedroom, and as we walked in, the husband was reaching for his pistol in the nightstand. Everything turned out fine, and the buyers actually ended up buying the home. Crazy!”

“When I first got started in real estate, I dragged my husband to an open house in the Farmers Market District. We opened the front door, walked in, and found the owner sitting naked on the couch playing his guitar. Ends up the house wasn’t open... to the public. I think that was the last time my husband came with me to an open house!” MELANIE TILL, MEYER GROUP

“I had a guy ask me to show him 10 bedroom homes my first year in real estate. He was essentially asking to see the most expensive homes on the market. He couldn’t provide proof of funds, so my office manager’s friend did some recon on him. It turned out that he was just let out of prison for fraud and that the police had to start following him around to figure out what he was really trying to do. Some of the listing agents said he called them trying to get into those homes as well!” RYAN STREIFF, DAVE PERRY MILLER

I received a call from the producer of the John Walsh Show, “America’s Most Wanted.” They flew me to NYC to appear on the tv show to discuss the property! The exposure didn’t sell the property but brought us all kinds of celebrity lookers and inquiries. Molly Hurt Marcy Haggar Passion and Priority

In the process of building a successful business, there are so many elements that demand your attention. There are the systems and back-end elements that allow the gears of your organization to work together. There are the elements within your business — the day-to-day operational excellence you build. And there are the steps you take to work on your business - to bring in a steady stream of work to grow - so there’s no shortage of places to spend your energy on. Ask Molly Hurt and Marcy Haggar. As they look at what they’re building together each day as REALTORS® and leaders of the Hurt & Haggar Real Estate Group with Compass RE, they maintain a strong focus on their passion and priority — the work they do for their clients. Early Glimpses That passion for real estate has been part of the sisters since they were young girls growing up in Dallas. “By the time I left home for college, I had lived in nine houses in the Dallas area, including neighborhoods like Preston Hollow and the Park Cities,” Molly re-

calls. “Our parents viewed Dallas real estate as a great investment and enjoyed the process of renovating homes. I remember one time we literally moved right across the street when our parents bought the neighbor’s house.” Molly and Marcy both attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. After earning her undergraduate degree, Molly worked at the Children’s Hospital as a child life specialist. She then received her master’s degree in speech pathology and focused on helping children with learning differences.

@realproducers

As the older sister, Molly was the first to enter the professional world, putting her degree to work. In time, she started a family with her husband, Grear, a Dallas-area orthopedic surgeon, and her focus shifted to taking care of their family. “When my daughter started first grade, I realized I wanted to go back to work, and real estate seemed like a natural fit allowing me to help people in a new and challenging way. I felt it would give me flexibility as a mother,” Molly remembers, “and it aligned well with the work I did at the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.” The ability to educate and guide people during stressful and emotional times proved to be a valuable skill in real estate.

Joining the Journey After about five years of building her business as a REALTOR®, Molly saw an opportunity. “Things really took off quicker than I expected. As I got busier, I saw areas where I needed help if I wanted to continue to grow my business, and that’s when I asked Marcy if she would be interested in working together,” Molly explains. After graduating from Vanderbilt, Marcy earned her master’s degree in interior design. She also started her own graphic design and printing firm from home while caring for her young family. Marcy listened to her sister’s proposition, and soon the Hurt & Haggar team was formed. “Marcy is extremely creative, plus she loves technology and has a great eye for design elements,” Molly says with pride. “Marcy is the perfect match for me. I tend to enjoy client interactions and the people side of the business, like showing properties, advising, and being on the go. Marcy is decisive and organized, and has such a gift for marketing, technology, and growing our business.”

Defining Success Success as sisters has been natural for Molly and Marcy. Each year, they’ve earned Top Producer awards, with 2019 being their best year yet as a team. Family is the fuel that drives their full lives away from work. Molly and Grear have three children, including Jack, who is a sophomore at the University of Georgia studying finance and real estate; Matthew, who is a senior at Highland Park High School and is interested in journalism and attending the University of Oklahoma, and Megan, who’s a Highland Park freshman. Marcy and her husband, Michael Haggar, share a lot of common ground in the industry, with Michael working in commercial real estate. Marcy and Michael also have three children, including Anna, a junior at Highland Park High School, Kate, a freshman at Highland Park High School, and Marshall, who is in 7th grade. Marcy and Molly live just a few blocks apart, and both ladies are very involved in their kids’ schools. In their free time, you might see them on the streets walking their dogs or playing Mahjong with friends. They are also members of Highland Park Methodist Church and have a passion for staying involved there.

Building Bonds One of the attributes they share is the bond they feel with their clients. “It’s such a privilege when people invite you into their home and life and trust you with a decision of this magnitude,” Molly says. “We really get close to our clients, and they are an important part of our lives. It’s more than just a business relationship, and we value the opportunity to help them.”

This team is also known for its “handson” approach to house preparation. “Molly and I are very focused on getting a house ready for market,” Marcy says. “You only have one chance to make a first impression, so we want it to be a great one. We have accumulated an entire attic filled with pillows, lamps, linens, and all types of things to stage our clients’ homes. And we put our husbands to work helping us move things on the weekends. We are very particular about how we present a property to the market, and not above planting flowers in a yard if that pop of color is needed!” This sister duo is a rewarding mix of shared and unique gifts.

42 • April 2020

“We are very similar and yet very different at the same time,” Marcy smiles. “While we have different strengths, we have the same values and work ethic, and we laugh a lot! Moving is stressful and can be very difficult. So we try to maintain a good sense of humor and keep our clients focused on the big picture. Our personalities work very well together.”

No two days are alike. “It’s always completely different. It’s like being dealt a new hand of cards every day,” Molly remarks. “There are various situations, obstacles, and personalities that you’re managing in order to be successful with the transaction. I like the challenge of it, from writing a strong offer to the negotiation of the contract and getting it to closing. Every deal is unique and that keeps it interesting. There is never a dull day, and Marcy and I enjoy that variety. We love what we do, and we have a lot of fun doing it.”

Relationships are a huge part of the passion Marcy and Molly have for their work, with their clients and their peers. “Success for us isn’t a volume number. It’s when our clients are satisfied, happy and feel like they’ve been well represented at the end of the deal. Marcy and I really prioritize our relationships with great agents in Dallas as well. Networking has been a key component of our success, and allowed us to help our clients in so many ways,” Molly emphasizes. “At the end of the day, real estate is about relationships. It doesn’t matter about the size of the transaction or volume of sales as much as knowing that we were the right fit for our clients so that in the end, it was a successful transaction and transition for them. That’s where we get our joy.”

Bringing Home Real Peace of Mind When something has a lot of moving parts, sometimes, things don’t always go as planned. As a real estate agent, you know that it definitely applies to the home buying process. That’s why it means so much to have a partner you can count on to bring home real peace of mind for your clients, and that’s what you definitely get with the team at Nations Home Warranty in Dallas. PERSONAL PRIDE AND COMMITMENT

Julie Jones is vice president of sales at Nations Home Warranty. And when you talk with her, it’s clear to see the heartfelt sense of pride and commitment. “One of the things we’re very proud of that sets us apart in the industry is we are local,” Julie emphasizes. “We got our start in 1996 with our president and founder, Sharon Harrison.” Nations Home Warranty is completely managed by women throughout the organization, including the organization’s call center and sales team. “This is a great place to be a part of. It’s a very family-oriented place,” Julie explains. “I absolutely, 100% love the relationships that we have here.” Julie smiles as she talks about members of the sales team, who she works with each day, including Bernice Moore-Lowry and Jamie Flynn.

@realproducers

I got my start in the industry as a summer job out of high school. I delivered surveys to title companies that summer, and I’ve never looked back.

The passion for what Julie does is also clear when she talks about her day-to-day work.

Through time — and her relationships — Julie discovered the rewarding place she’s in now at Nations Home Warranty.

“Every day, I get to create, develop and explore relationships with the people I work with, including my REALTOR® friends and my affiliate friends in the title and mortgage sides of the business,” Julie smiles. “That family feeling really extends throughout that circle of people, and it’s been that way since I started here 12 years ago.”

“Through time, I had been involved with the Women’s Council of REALTORS® Dallas chapter. That’s how I met Sharon Harrison. We got to know each other that way. I remember she contacted me one Friday and said she was looking for a sales representative and asked if I knew anyone. I couldn’t respond fast enough,” she laughs.

Julie is a fifth-generation resident of Dallas, specifically University Park.

Her success in making a tangible difference in the lives of homeowners is boosted by the satisfaction Julie feels all the way around.

REWARDING RELATIONSHIPS

“In fact, my great-great-grandparents came here with the railroad when the town was just getting started, and we’ve been here ever since,” she says. EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE

While many in the industry discover their love for real estate after taking other paths, Julie got a very early start.

“For me, success is being able to create and hone a career, craft, and life that is very well-balanced. I love the balance,” she points out. “I feel very comfortable in the role we play and the interactions I get to have each day. I really enjoy being out in the community with people.”

“I got my start in the industry as a summer job out of high school. I delivered surveys to title companies that summer, and I’ve never looked back,” Julie recalls. “I worked my way through the title side of the business, and then worked for 20-plus years as a loan officer in the mortgage business.”

...when it comes to discussing the particulars of what we do at Nations Home Warranty with their clients, I can talk with their clients to make sure they have a full understanding and set of expectations around our product.

EXCELLENCE THROUGH EDUCATION

Part of that rewarding feeling is about the natural gift Julie has for education. “That’s really a passion for me. One of my favorite aspects of what I do is being able to be that trusted part of my referral partners’ teams. I’m here to support them and let them know they’re not in this alone,” Julie explains. “So when it comes to discussing the particulars of what we do at Nations Home Warranty with their clients, I can talk with their clients to make sure they have a full understanding and set of expectations around our product.” In her time away from work, Julie has a wide range of interests, beginning with spending time with her son, Jeff, her daughter-in-law, Lauren, and her three puppies—Sophie, Hailey, and Jasie. Julie also loves being active outside, along with reading and anything music-related. The experience and expertise Julie has built through her career are impressive. And the way she puts it to work for others is admirable.

“I’m really at my best when I’m advocating for someone else,” she smiles. “I love when a new affiliate comes up and says, ‘My boss said I needed to come talk to you.’ That comes back to the fact that I love helping people with education. I remember when I was the new person in the room at one point, and I like being there to help others who are in that position, to be a resource for them.” Each day, Julie Jones and the Nations Home Warranty team bring home real peace of mind by building relationships, educating people, and being there when it matters most. And that’s a rewarding feeling. As Julie says with a warm smile, “I love the life I’ve created for myself … being an advocate for other people.”
