This report is about people.

While facts and figures have their place, it’s even more important to give a voice to some of the people cared for

by North Devon Hospice. Because it is these stories that tell the real tale of what we achieved as a charity last year.

So I hope you enjoy hearing from Martyn, Kerry, Graham, Tallulah and Nicola; real people on your doorstep, telling you what North Devon Hospice means to them. For every inspirational story in this report, there are a thousand others that go untold. That is simply mind-blowing, and goes some way to explaining just what a difference your local hospice makes. Martyn, one of North Devon Hospice’s patients. He is supported at home by our Community Nurse Specialists Things for us would be so much more difficult without the hospice.

They are the lifeblood.

If I’ve got problems, instead of letting us have the pressure of trying to look into it, she (our hospice nurse) will fight our corner and she’s just brilliant.

I can say that about the hospice in general actually, because they really are brilliant… it’s hard to put into words.”

I’ve had some very low times and they’re just always there. It would be difficult to imagine life without them, I think we’re very lucky here in North Devon.

If the carer isn’t ok then the patient won’t be ok either. If you’re involved with the hospice, it’s like being enveloped in a big hug really.You can’t see it but you can sense it and you just feel safe.

Martyn’s wife and carer, Ann, is also supported by the hospice. “Without them I think we’d be adrift. Completely adrift.

Thanks to you our Community Nurse Specialists made nearly 5,000 patient visits, the vast majority of these being to patients in their own homes.

looked after him so well. On the 17th November daddy died but the hospice still looked after me and mummy.

“

Tallulah, daughter of a patient Hello my name is Tallulah and today I’m telling you about my chosen charity. My chosen charity is North Devon Hospice, my dad went there for his last few days. And the North Devon Hospice made us feel special by giving my daddy his own room with extra beds for people to visit him and stay the night.

On the 15th November was my party it was a suprise for me. My birthday is actually on the 1st December but they knew daddy wouldn’t of lived that long, so they pushed it forward. I had it in daddy’s bedroom in the hospice. I only had family come for my party and I was coming up 5. Daddy had cancer and they looked after him so well. On the 17th November daddy died but the hospice still looked after me and mummy.

A few years later mummy met Richard and we live happily ever after. Mummy is training to be a nurse and she is going to work at the hospice.

Thanks to you our Bedded Unit nurses helped to care for 180 new people in the Bedded Unit and also welcomed their families and friends.

Kerry, Manager of Pinehurst Care Home The training we’ve had from the hospice has completely changed how we care for our residents with life-limiting illnesses.

Me and my staff have taken advantage of all the education and training offered

by North Devon Hospice, because we know it helps us provide even better care.

Our residents who are faced with a life-limiting illness certainly have different needs from us as a care home, so we want to make sure we are doing everything we can.

Thanks to the support of the hospice, we are able to avoid unnecessary admissions into hospital, as well as doing the little things that make such a difference. To make sure they’re comfortable, we look for pressure areas in the residents’ beds and we spend a lot more time just sitting and talking because that’s really important too.

We’re grateful to the hospice for sharing their expertise. It’s helped us make a big difference to the lives of our residents.

end, nan said Keely was like her angel.

Nan was almost like a parent to me.

All my memories of summer holidays are of spending time with her at the beach and swimming in the sea. She’d always drag us in, we’d have to drag her out!

It was really hard to take on board because nan was always so full of life, but one day she went to bed and ended up staying there for five weeks,

when she eventually passed away. It didn’t seem right or fair. Keely gave us so much support, she was calming and sympathetic. She was like a family member, making sure we were all alright.

Keely helped us all care for nan. She didn’t come in and take over. She just guided us and let us do what we had to do.

The hospice is an asset to North Devon, and we need to look after it for the future.You never know when you might need them.

Geoff, one of our volunteer drivers have been a volunteer for “ Ithree and a half years. After my retirement I was looking for something to make good use of my time and it appealed to me to join as a volunteer.

What I didn’t expect to get from volunteering, but what I get in return, is the pleasure of seeing the effect that the hospice has on the people they support. I enjoy bringing patients and their family members in to the hospice for treatments, therapies, discussion groups, bereavement support.

When I collect patients to take them home again, the visible glow from their visits gives me the greatest feeling of pride.

Our year in numbers 30 years of providing care and support to people throughout North Devon, thanks to you.

50,000 miles travelled by our Community Nurse Specialists so they could visit patients in their own homes.

538 patients didn’t have to go into hospital unnecessarily when their symptoms changed because our hospice services were able to support them at home.

5,000 followers on facebook and that number keeps going up.

4 million is the amount of money we needed to raise from scratch to be able to provide our free care and support.

14 people are on our Board of Trustees. These 14 volunteers dedicated their time, skills and expertise to help govern the hospice.

24 GP Practices work with us to ensure their patients are referred to North Devon Hospice services.

3,183,583 is the amount of money we spent on providing care and support to people when they most needed it.

80 gallons of soup and 2,000 bananas helped to fuel the ladies who took part in nightwalk, our biggest fundraising event.

About us North Devon Hospice provides free care and support to patients and their families who are faced with the impact of a life-limiting illness. We believe in being there for all the family.

Every year we offer support to thousands of local people. Our services range from end-of-life care at home to emotional support in schools, for children; from specialist 24 hour care in our Bedded Unit to bereavement support for all the family.

The care provided throughout North Devon is only possible because of the amazing generosity of our communty. Together we work towards raising over £4 million from scratch every year.

Our next steps The Long House and our appeal We are looking to provide more care and support in Holsworthy and the surrounding areas from The Long House. We are continuing to raise money through The Long House Appeal and we will be approaching larger Trusts and Grants to make this all possible.

There are around 1,000 people living in Holsworthy and the surrounding areas trying to deal with a life-limiting illness. Many are not able to make the 2 hour round trip to access services in Barnstaple. The Long House will make our unique care and support more accessible to people when they need it most.

Access to information We are eager to ensure our patients and their wider families can easily access information about our care and support. Although we provide care 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, we appreciate how valuable it is to have information at the touch of a button. We are working with award winning local agency Bray Leino, who are rebuilding our website to include more information for our patients, their families and carers.

Working towards a more sustainable income stream This is the first year of being tenants at Sheppard’s Cafe in Barnstaple.

All profits will be donated to North Devon Hospice, helping us to provide care and support from a more sustainable and reliable income stream. As well as offering great fresh food on the go, our Sheppard’s team are looking forward to providing more lunches for local businesses and welcoming new customers into the cafe.
