Here for you, because of you North Devon Hospice cares for local people affected by cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.

We are here to support the whole family, not just the person who is ill. Our aim is to provide the care that is needed, wherever and whenever it is needed.

We can only do this thanks to the amazing support of local people, just like little Evie. Quite simply, we are here for the community and because of the community.

Fact North Devon Hospice’s catchment area covers over 800 square miles, from Lynton in the north to Holsworthy in the south as well as every town, village, hamlet and farmstead in-between. We need to raise

£3.5m from scratch every year to provide our essential care to local people. More than 80p in every £1 we raise is spent on providing care and support to our patients, their families and carers.

Fact Throughout last year, intervention by our Hospice to Home service prevented 269 avoidable admissions into hospital. This meant we provided care and support in people’s own homes, helping them to be where they wanted to be; at home with their loved ones.

In the opening speech they said how they had chosen the winner because of the tremendous efforts they had made to develop services and provide even more support for people at home.

As the penny dropped, I was overwhelmed with pride for all the team. I know how far they will go to to make each person feel valued and supported.

In November, we were named the UK’s Charity of the Year by the Charity Times because of the impact of our care throughout the community.

“ “ Fact On top of our clinical care we emotionally supported thousands of people last year. Our supportive care services included one-to-one counselling, group support, complementary therapies, bereavement support and much more.

Being there for you Our support extends to the whole family, including children. We are there for as long as is needed; helping people to cope with the impact that cancer and other life-limiting illnesses have on a family. We believe that emotional well-being is as important as treating physical symptoms.

Fact The youngest person we supported last year was 4 years old. As well as specialist one-to-one support, we work with teachers, schools and social workers to make sure a child’s emotional needs are met.

Most people believe, as I did, that the hospice is about dying, but actually what I have discovered is that it’s about supporting people to live the most fulfilling life they can for as long as they can and supporting them and their loved ones when the time comes

Describing the difference the hospice can make to a family is not always easy to put into words. It is often only when someone finds themselves in that situation, that they fully understand how much care and support is on offer, and how much of a positive impact this can have.

“ “ Fact Last year our 525 volunteers gave nearly 18 years worth of their time. That’s around 160,000 hours given! Volunteers are crucial to the hospice and help out in every facet of running the charity.

Having volunteered for local charities for 20 years, I wanted to do the same when moving to North Devon. I saw the energetic and spirited staff and volunteers who made the hospice tick and I decided I wanted to be part of it.

I sat with both my mother and my father in their last few days of life.This had a profound effect on my commitment to the hospice. I know first-hand

how important it is to provide the highest quality care to those with a life-limiting illness, whether they have days, weeks, months or maybe years left in their journey.

I always enjoy meeting patients when I visit Deer Park. It reminds me poignantly why I volunteer. I have always believed that we should provide care whenever and wherever needed. So to see the difference our new Hospice to Home service has had over the last year has been incredibly fulfilling

Angela started volunteering as a Trustee over 10 years ago.

She later became the Chair of the Board of Trustees where she and the team worked to ensure the charity had a clear vision and strategy for the future.

Fact Ben and his sister Jemma raised over ÂŁ2,000 by climbing Ben Nevis in aid of North Devon Hospice.

Fundraising For every pound you donated, we spent 80 pence of it on providing care and support.

As we can only fundraise within North Devon, we rely heavily on the generosity and support of the local community to help us keep raising money every year.

People just like Ben and Jemma organise their own fundraising events, which means that we can keep being there. If you would like to do the same, we would love to hear from you.

We’ve known lots of friends and families who’ve needed the care of the hospice, so I wanted to do something to help. This is going to be a really hard challenge, but I am proud to do my bit

Fact Last year we trained a total of 1,022 local healthcare professionals, all of whom now have new skills to better support patients towards the end of their life.

Of this total, 367 were care home staff.

We only get one chance to get it right when it comes to end of life care. That is why we deliver a range of education courses for local healthcare professionals. This is to promote the highest standard of care towards the end of life, no matter where it is delivered. This year, we rolled out our ‘Six Steps’ programme for Care Homes, helping their staff become more confident when providing end of life care to their residents.

Advanced care planning is so important.

There is not the opportunity to bring someone back and say: ‘We’re sorry, can we have another go?’

Looking to the future Developing our care As part of our plan for the future, we are continually looking at how we can provide more care and support to our patients and their families. We are hoping to: - Increase the Hospice to Home team, so more care can be provided in people’s own homes around the clock - Increase the level of understanding and awareness of our care and services

by GPs and District Nurses.

Developing the access to our care with The Long House By the end of 2015 The Long House in Holsworthy will be open, offering care and support to patients and their families. From this outreach centre in Holsworthy we aim to provide more care closer to home and be in a better position to support local GPs. It means that local patients and their families won’t need to make the 2-hour round trip to access support from our main site, Deer Park, in Barnstaple.

Developing end of life care in care homes We are rolling out a pilot education programme called the Six Steps Programme. This nationally recognised programme is about training care home staff in how to provide the best possible care to residents with life-limiting illnesses. This is a vital project for North Devon Hospice and we look forward to working with the 6 care homes throughout the coming year.

Developing our website Thanks to the generosity of Bray Leino, the hospice will soon be launching a brand new website. It will make information about hospice services much easier to access for our patients and families. It will also be suitable to view on mobile and tablet devices.

It’s a myth:

Hospices are for people about to die While we do offer the highest quality care during the final few days, we actually support people for a long time before then. We are here from the point of diagnosis onwards, and we don’t just look after the patient, but their whole family too. Hospice care is about living life to the full, no matter how long we might have.
