ALPHA LEGACY HUMANITARIAN HONOREE

Trina Moody

Mrs. Trina Moody is an accomplished English teacher, team lead, and district curriculum writer for the McKinney Independent School District. She began her teaching career with MISD in 2011 as a student teacher at Scott Johnson Middle School. In addition to the roles mentioned above, she is a teacher mentor and member of her district’s prestigious, 12-person Secondary ELAR Textbook Selection Committee.

In her classroom, Mrs. Moody saw the life-altering impact that a negative mindset can have on a child’s decision-making. To help combat this unhealthy thinking, in 2017, she designed a unit of study for a special group of thirty students where the goal of the reading curriculum was to offer hope, inspire change, and encourage better decision-making. With the need for these students to see themselves as the leaders that Mrs. Moody believed they could be, Mrs. Moody created a project to bridge their classroom learning experiences to solve real-life challenges within our own community.

The culminating project for these students was to lead and organize a school-wide canned food drive event for Minnie’s Food Pantry. This project led to the humble beginning of MISD’s partnership with Minnie’s Food Pantry. On behalf of the district, Mrs. Moody manages this multi-campus partnership that provides monthly nutritional assistance to hundreds of MISD families and thousands of students through their Minnie’s on-campus pantry projects (in-house snack program). Through an introduction by Mrs. Lynette Wellington, one of Minnie’s Food Pantry’s leaders, in 2018, Mrs. Moody met the amazing men of the Xi Tau Lambda Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. Once connected to their Alpha Legacy leaders, she introduced them to her school’s “Boys II Men” club sponsor, Coach Sampson, so they too could benefit from the mentoring program the Alpha Phi Alpha group provides to the community.

Mrs. Moody views her multi-campus behind-the-scenes work with Minnie’s Food Pantry and the Alpha Phi Alpha group as doing “her part” in helping to ensure that “Tomorrow’s generation of leaders don’t suffer from food insecurity and that they get the opportunity to lead and learn from the best that Collin County has to offer.” Mrs. Moody is the proud wife of Eric Moody, to whom she’s been married to for 14 years, mom of Noah Moody (11), and Haley Moody (7) to whom she loves with all of her heart.

Since 2019, the Xi Tau Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. has been an avid supporter of MISD schools, students, and families. Their commitment to the district began on the campus of Scott Johnson Middle School (SJMS) and has since then grown in complexity and size.

John R. Roach Juvenile Detention Center is Collin County's home to youth who have allegedly committed under-aged crimes (MISD teachers and staff support the learning of these students while they are there).

The male component of this Long-Term Unit houses up to 50 young men from anywhere between six months to a year. It is this portion of the population that the Xi Tau Lambda chapter mentors monthly and shares their words of wisdom. Eager to have life spoken to them, the young men of this facility eagerly await their visits with the Alphas.

The boys and the officers are impressed with the topics and activities that the gentlemen leading this program have provided. Boyd High School & Scott Johnson Middle School

The Xi Tau Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha's dedication to serving the students of SJMS and Boyd's high school is commendable. Their consistent presence and positive Alpha Legacy curriculum have inspired these young men to view life from a variety of lenses. They too look forward to their sessions with the Alphas.

The Financial Literacy workshop that the Alphas presented on the campuses of SJMS, Boyd, and Roach Detention Center was a favorite among the students! It challenged them to look at life through a financial lens, and it opens their eyes to real-world dilemmas.

Tackle Tomorrow: Malvern Elementary

In partnership with the Tackle Tomorrow program, the men of Alpha Phi Alpha provided 200+ holiday meals to the families of Malvern Elementary School for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Putting the needs of those they are serving as their top priority, these community leaders brought their meal packages to the school so that parents who wished to participate could do so with little to no difficulty.

Fall Community Resource Night

In the Fall of 2022, McKinney ISD hosted its annual Community Resource Night event.

The purpose of this event was to connect MISD families with community resources that would help them improve and sustain their quality of life. At this event, parents and guardians had the opportunity to connect with a variety of community agencies, vendors, and local assistance programs.
