Registration Policies & Guidelines

Uh-oh, we had to cancel:

Regrettably, if a minimum number of registrants is not met, we may have to cancel or combine classes due to insufficient registration. These decisions are made prior to the course start date. Please register early to avoid disappointment. A 100% refund is granted when we cancel a program. When a class has been cancelled due to instructor illness or weather conditions, a class will be added on at the end of the session. If this is not possible, you will be issued a refund in the amount of the missed class.

Oops, changed your plans?:

A refund will be issued if we receive applicable withdrawal notification. Programs and lessons require five (5) or more days’ notice prior to course start date. Camps and certification courses require seven (7) or more days’ notice prior to course start date. If appropriate notice is not given, no refund will be issued. There may be other exceptions to these guidelines. In some cases, these exceptions will be noted in the individual course description. To request a refund, please contact the facility that is offering your program. All refunds are subject to a $5 processing fee.

Extended Illness / Injury and Missed Classes:

Please stay at home when you’re sick, even if symptoms are mild. In cases of extended illness or injury, a prorated refund may be granted upon provision of a medical note. Classes missed due to vacation, or other reasons will not be refunded.

Sorry, the course is full:

If a program is full, please ask staff to put your name on our waitlist. We will do our best to accommodate those waitlisted.

Customer Satisfaction:

We care about your experience in our programs. Please contact one of our Programmers directly to discuss any questions, comments, or concerns that you have with our recreation programs.

Refunds:

Payments made by credit card will be refunded by the initial payment method. Payments made by cash, cheque, or debit will be refunded by cheque; please allow a minimum of two weeks’ processing time.

Non-Sufficient Funds:

Arbutus Park Swim Lessons

Lifesaving Society Swim for Life Program

Preschool 1 We encourage the parent to participate until their child lets them know they can do it themselves (thank you very much). These preschoolers will have fun learning to get in and out of the water. We'll help them jump into chest deep water. They'll float and glide on their front and back and learn to get their faces wet and blow bubbles underwater.

Preschool 2 These preschoolers learn to jump into chest-deep water by themselves, and get in and get out wearing a lifejacket. They'll submerge and exhale underwater. Wearing a lifejacket they'll glide on their front and back.

Preschool 3 These youngsters will try both jumping and a sideways entry into deep water while wearing a lifejacket. They'll recover objects from the bottom in waist-deep water. They'll work on kicking and gliding through the water on their front and back.

Preschool 4 Advanced preschoolers will learn to do solo jumps into deeper water and get out by themselves. They'll do sideways entries and open their eyes underwater. They'll master a short swim on their front wearing a lifejacket and gliding and kicking on their side.

Preschool 5 These youngsters get more adventuresome with a forward roll entry wearing a lifejacket and treading water for 10 sec. They'll work on front and back crawl swims for 5 m, interval training and get a giggle out of whip kick.

Swimmer 1 These beginners will become comfortable jumping into water with and without a lifejacket. They'll learn to open their eyes, exhale and hold their breath underwater. They'll work on floats, glides and kicking through the water on their front and back.

Swimmer 2 These advanced beginners will jump into deeper water, and learn to be comfortable falling sideways into the water wearing a lifejacket. They'll be able to support themselves at the surface without an aid, learn whip kick, swim 10 m on their front and back, and be introduced to flutter kick interval training (4 x 5 m).

Swimmer 3 These junior swimmers will dive and do in-water front somersaults and handstands. They'll work on 15m of front crawl, back crawl and 10 m of whip kick. Flutter kick interval training increases to 4 x 15 m.

Swimmer 4 These intermediate swimmers will swim 5 m underwater and lengths of front, back crawl, whip kick, and breaststroke arms with breathing. Their new bag of tricks includes the completion of the Canadian Swim to Survive® Standard. They'll cap it all off with front crawl sprints over 25 m and 4 x 25 m front or back crawl interval training

Swimmer 5 These swimmers will master shallow dives, cannonball entries, eggbeater kicks, and in-water backward somersaults. They'll refine their front and back crawl over 50 m swims of each, and breaststroke over 25 m. Then they'll pick up the pace in 25 m sprints and two interval training bouts: 4 x 50 m front or back crawl; and 4 x 15 m breaststroke.

Swimmer 6 These advanced swimmers will rise to the challenge of sophisticated aquatic skills including stride entries, compact jumps and lifesaving kicks like eggbeater and scissor kick. They'll develop strength and power in head-up breaststroke sprints over 25 m. They'll easily swim lengths of front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke, and they'll complain about the 300 m workout.

Swim Patrol Rookie, Ranger & Star

The Canadian Swim Patrol program is the on-ramp to lifeguarding. Rookie Patrol, Ranger Patrol and Star Patrol form a pre-Bronze progression of enriched training for young swimmers who are ready to go beyond learn-to-swim. Ability is the only prerequisite.

Rookie Patrol Rookie Patrol features development of front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke over 50 m each, timed 100 m swims, and 350 m workouts. A work-hard/play-hard approach develops swimming strength and efficiency with emphasis on personal responsibility for Water Smart® behavior.

Ranger Patrol Ranger Patrol features development of front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke over 75 m each, a 100 m lifesaving medley and timed 200 m swims.

Star Patrol Star Patrol demands good physical conditioning and lifesaving judgment. Participants develop lifesaving and first aid skills; further refine front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke over 100 m each; and complete 600 m workouts and 300 m timed swims.

Preschool Levels are for ages 3 - 5 years, Swimmer Levels are for children 5 years and older, Swim Patrol Levels are for ages 8 - 15 years. See page 36 for Youbou Swim Camp.

Love the Weeds

You’re With

Regenerative living means being open to new perspectives. Weeds can be people we don’t agree with, problem plants, or self-sabotaging thoughts! Again we will weave permaculture principles into this workshop while looking a little closer at several common plants that are often the bane of gardeners. Invasive plant identification will also be discussed. Can we find solutions within our problems? Activities will include creating and enjoying products from common garden “weeds”. Please inform us of any dietary concerns or allergies.

Gardening with Spirit

Regenerative living means treading softly upon Earth. These are times of daunting and accelerating chaos, but also fertile ground for amazing change and bounty! Let's check in with how we live now, versus how we can live in better harmony with ‘our other than human allies’. We will explore practical steps to take and look at our place in nature’s web and our garden community. No gardener works alone! What if a resource is the spirit of the land? Do plants communicate with us? We will explore these questions and more.

Connecting to Place

Regenerative living means co-creating a future of mutual benefit for all beings. First, let’s connect ourselves to place. Join our instructor in exploring connection to “the land where you stand”. Using the permaculture principle “observe and interact” as our jumping-off point, we will travel from the sun arc to the soil beneath our feet. We will use activities and discussions to find our unique connections, exploring technologies and nature’s wisdom. Please come prepared to spend some time outside, weather permitting.
