President’s Corner Happy New Year NCPG Mamas! Just like that, it’s 2024 and we have officially started the second half of our NCPG year! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and are as excited as I am for the spring in NCPG!

2023-2024 Board of Directors President: Ilyssa Reading

Thank you so much to everyone who attended BOARD & BITES on January 8th to learn more about joining the Board of Directors for next year! The official slate for the 2024-2025 BOARD OF DIRECTORS will be sent to the general membership for approval in March, so be on the lookout for that. As we start to solidify plans for next year’s board, I can’t help but reflect on my past 5 years as a part of the incredible leadership team of this organization. Serving on the NCPG Board of Directors has been such an honor and a privilege, and I am beyond grateful for the friendships made, lessons learned, and challenges overcome, particularly as we navigated the pandemic. I am so proud of the current and previous boards, without whom NCPG would not exist, and I could not be more excited to pass the baton on to a new group of women who will continue the legacy of those who came before them.

Vice President: Jenna Roehm

In addition to finalizing our Board for next year, the current Board has also been hard at work making final preparations for our spring events! Be on the lookout for communication from our Special Events team in the coming weeks for details about what is to come over the next few months. You will also want to SAVE THE DATE for THURSDAY, MARCH 21ST for SIP & BID! This is our only fundraising event of the year and we can’t wait to enjoy a night out with you all to help raise money for NCPG. Keep an eye out for more details to come from our Fundraising team.

Sponsorship: Brooke Dahn, Michele Jaycox & Paige Rafi

One final date to keep in your mind is APRIL 1ST when EARLY BIRD REGISTRATION for the 2024-2025 year will begin! It is crazy to me how fast time is flying, but I will continue to do my best to enjoy the present and take full advantage of each and every moment. I wish you all a healthy, happy, and prosperous start to 2024! As always, please feel free to contact me at president@ncpgaz.org for any and all questions, concerns, or feedback. Member to Meet: Kimberly Bailey, 3A Children: Griffin, 3 & Blair, 18 months Spouse: Clayton Bailey Hometown: Scottsdale, AZ Career: I own a specialized healthcare company, KRK ValueBased Consulting, that provides consulting services in the healthcare industry. Favorite activity to do with your kids: My husband is a pilot and has instilled a love for airplanes in our children. We often visit the Terminal 4 parking lot at PHX airport, where we enjoy seeing airplanes taking off and landing. It’s a beautiful experience that never fails to entertain the children. Favorite local family breakfast spot: US EGG is our family’s favorite! Their kids’ menu is fantastic, offering many delicious options. We always appreciate their fast and consistent service, making it a go-to spot for our family breakfast outings. Favorite meal to cook your family: We cook breakfast together as a family every Sunday. Griffin gets to crack the eggs, and Blair is learning how to mix the pancake ingredients! Favorite place to vacation with the family: San Diego remains our all-time favorite family vacation destination. The relatively short drive makes it convenient and hassle-free for us to travel there together. We have found a kid-friendly Airbnb, an absolute game-changer for our vacations. Your “can’t live without” travel items for the kids: The Hiccapop Inflatable Bed Rails for Toddlers, the Slumberpod, and the Inglesina Fast Table Chair. Ways you simplify the bedtime routine: Planning ahead has been essential for simplifying the bedtime routine. I set up the bedroom

10 ncpgaz.org

environment (turn on the sound machine, place pacifiers in the crib, place the lovey in the crib) and layout the pajamas. This allows us to go directly from bath time into the bedtime routine. Most meaningful moment as a parent: Parenting two active children who are close in age can feel like managing chaos. The constant energy and demands can be overwhelming. However, amidst the chaos, there are beautiful moments when they play together and enjoy each other’s company. Witnessing their connection and seeing their genuine affection for each other are moments that mean the world to us. Most “OMG did that really happen” moment as a parent: When my son was 20 months old, we were out to dinner, and a couple in the booth behind us complimented us on how well-behaved our son was. Immediately after receiving the compliment, my son picked up his cheeseburger and threw it. The cheeseburger landed directly between the couple in the booth behind us. I was utterly mortified! Best parenting advice given to you: The best parenting advice I received and needed to hear came from our pediatrician. She said, “Your children already have a mother, so don’t try and turn your husband into a second mother.” She meant it’s okay if my husband doesn’t do everything exactly how I want it or how I do it. He will have his way of doing things, and his relationship with the children will be and should be different than the one I have with them. This allowed me to let go of trying to control everything and, in return, allowed me to accept more support. Best thing learned at NCPG so far: The most valuable lesson I’ve learned from my time at NCPG is the comforting realization that I’m not alone in this journey. The unwavering support from our teacher, coupled with the camaraderie among group members, has been amazing.

Party Like A Pro By Elisabeth Irwin, Owner of Pop of Color Balloon Design. Proudly serving Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Arcadia since 2018

TIPS FOR PLANNING AND EXECUTING THE PERFECT PARTY As the owner of a high-end balloon design business, I know a thing or two about throwing a good party. I’ve seen the most extravagant celebrations flop, and I’ve seen simple backyard bbqs turn into the party of the year. So whether you’re planning your child’s next birthday party or an intimate soiree for your anniversary, here are some tips to make planning simple and your party pop! 1. Pick a theme — I know, I know. Cringe. But I promise that picking a theme for your event is the easiest way to ensure that every aspect of the event is cohesive and well-manicured. It takes the guesswork out of sticking to a color palette, and helps to incorporate your, or your child’s, personality, making the party feel personal and unique. And don’t stress yourself over picking a theme! It can be as complex or simple as you want. Here’s a few ideas to get you thinking about a theme: KIDS PARTIES: • Favorite tv show or movie • Favorite color (imagine having a “pink party!” swoon) • Favorite activity or hobby (painting party, anyone?) • Favorite animal • Favorite food (We threw my daughters a Puppies & • Pancakes party 2 years ago and they still talk about it to this day)

ADULT PARTIES: • Decades (think 90’s or early 2000’s) • Garden Party • Favorite alcoholic beverage (great for men who love whiskey or tequila) • Pamper Party (because who wouldn’t love a night of manis and girl talk?) 2. Include an experience — The parties that leave guests wanting more are the ones with some kind of activity to share in. For kids, this could be something as simple as sensory tables or a custom coloring page tablecloth. For adults, a mixology class or floral arrangement station are fantastic for keeping guests engaged. 3. Hire a professional photographer — I am a HUGE advocate for making space in the party budget for a pro photographer for a few reasons. First, it means you can enjoy your own party without the fear that you aren’t going to get the images you want most. It also means that you can actually be in the photos yourself (since we all know that mom is usually the one taking all the pictures). Second, it ensures the best quality photos of both you and your guests. And lastly, and this one is huge, it means that everyone at the party, including you, can be fully present without the need to whip out a phone. Plus, when your photographer sends you the edited images, you have the joy of surprising your guests with another call-back to your amazing party by sharing the photos with them! 4. Give a usable favor, or don’t give one at all — We’ve all been there. The 5th kid’s birthday party in a month where your child is taking home yet another bag of candy and dollar store toys. They’re fun at first, but then it all starts littering your house and becoming more junk in the junk drawer. So here’s my advice: either give something truly worthwhile, or skip party favors entirely. Trust me, no one will be upset if you opt to forgo a $1 pencil case for your child’s party favor. If you do want to give guests a fun favor, here are some great options I’ve seen that go over best with guests: FOR KIDS: • Full-size plushies they can “adopt” at the party • A playdough sensory kit • Hot Wheels • Sunglasses, custom shirts, or custom dress-up clothes

12 ncpgaz.org

FOR ADULTS: • Floral arrangements or wreaths • Custom wine or shot glass • Custom candle • Bottle of alcohol 5. Don’t skip the balloons — Hear me out. Balloons are a great way to incorporate theme, color palette, and ambience to your event. They take up a lot of space, which may sound like an odd plus, but when you’re working in a larger-scale venue, home, or backyard it’s important to take up square-footage with decor. When your event space feels huge it ends up making your party feel dinky, small, and not thought out. Lastly, when done right balloons can transform any party into a true work of art. Whether you’re hosting an upscale dinner party or a 1st birthday, balloons can increase the overall aesthetic of any theme or event type. Plus, you can’t ask for a better photo backdrop! Ready to start planning your next event? We’d love to work with you! Follow us on Instagram @popofcoloraz for all your party inspo, and visit us at www.popofcoloraz.com to submit an inquiry.

TEACHER’S CORNER Blaire Hinks, Class 1A

Any tips for introducing a new sibling into the family? When introducing a new sibling put the attention on your first child(ren). Show them that you are proud of their new role and make them feel as if they are part of the family unit that now includes a new addition. Label their role as a big brother/sister. Focus on what they get to do in their new role and how they have a part in the new little one’s introduction. I love giving a small gift that is from the new addition to the newly promoted sibling. It shows them that they are included in this change. Allowing them to have control, within reason, of their role with the new baby. Allowing them to hold the baby, engage with the baby, help with diaper changes, or getting a change of clothes for you after bath time. Giving them a job allows them to feel included in the chaos of adding a new member to the family.

What advice do you have to working parents who are juggling a family and career? As a mom who worked full time for the first 5 out of my 6 children, I can understand the heavy load that parents have when working full time and raising a family. It can feel like there is no time off. First off, routines are mandatory. Scheduling everything from date nights, dinners, cleaning, can help stay in control of work and home life. Having help is also key. You cannot do it all. I will repeat that again. You cannot do it all. Also, equally important to understand is that you are not expected to do it all. I like to look at what I can do, or what I can accomplish in a realistic view. Give yourself grace!

Monique Nelson, Newborn A & B

Any tips for introducing a new sibling into the family? I read an amazing article years ago when a mom and dad were telling a little one about a new baby about to arrive and how much love they had to give they used candles to show their love. They had 4 candles 2 big ones that were to show mom and dad and two little ones. Mom and dad lit their big candles and said this is all the love mom and dad have then they lit the candle and said look we have enough love for you too and look at how much love we still have and then they lit the other candle and said and we have just as much love for the new baby but that doesn’t mean that we have any less love for you. It was a cute way for the child to visualize.

What advice do you have to working parents who are juggling a family and career? You can’t be super mom so don’t be so hard on yourself. Hire someone to do the housework so you have more quality time when you are home. Share responsibilities at home with your partner.

FUN, FESTIVE AND KID-FRIENDLY

Busy showing everyone in your family how much you love them — with gifts, baked goods and special dinners this time of year? This Valentine’s Day, let the kids help you make the holiday even better (and take a little pressure off). Whip up a treat for a loved one or just spend some quality time in the kitchen together working on something you can share. Either way, it’s a win-win! For this delicious dessert, simply swirl together white and dark melted chocolates, then top with any of your favorite Cupidapproved candies for a treat all ages will enjoy. LEVEL: Easy TIME: 1 hour (including chilling time) SERVINGS: 6 INGREDIENTS: • 4 ounces white chocolate, chopped • 8 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped • Sprinkles, sanding sugar, candy hearts and coated chocolates, for toppings

20 ncpgaz.org

DIRECTIONS: 1. Bring a small pan with 1 inch of water to a boil over medium-low heat. Place the white chocolate in a small bowl and place over the simmering water. When it is almost halfway melted, remove the bowl from the heat to a towel. Continue to stir with a rubber spatula until completely melted. Set aside. Repeat with the bittersweet chocolate. 2. Pour the bittersweet chocolate onto a parchment-lined rimmed baking sheet and spread to 1/4-inch thick. Use a rubber spatula to drizzle the white chocolate over the bittersweet in zigzags and decorative patterns. Run the tip of a skewer through the chocolate in different directions to make swirls. Sprinkle with the toppings as desired. Refrigerate for about 30 minutes, then break into pieces.
