Sept/Oct 2023

President’s Corner Welcome Back to All Our NCPG Mamas! For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Ilyssa Reading and I am your 2023-2024 NCPG President. This is my 2nd year as president, 5th year on the Board, and 7th year in NCPG! I joined NCPG when I was pregnant with my oldest and I truly couldn’t imagine being a mom without the incredible friends, teachers, and resources that this organization has put in my path. Every summer, the Board of Directors identifies an intention word to guide us through the next year. This year, we have chosen the word ONWARD, as we felt that it adequately represented our goal for NCPG to continue moving forward, while also growing along the way. Last year truly was the comeback year that the BOD hoped for, and we have been hard at work the last few months planning for a year that is sure to be even better than last! One exciting addition to NCPG that we are thrilled to offer this year is a new class called Parenting Exceptional Kids. This class is age-inclusive, open to moms and dads, and is geared towards parents of children who have any sort of learning differences. Parenting Exceptional Kids will meet monthly after our morning NCPG classes and will be taught by Blaire Hinks and Chelsea Kunde. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions about this class or how to join. As we kickstart the 2023-2024 year, I want to remind everyone that the BOD are here to serve you and that we are open to any and all feedback throughout the year. If you ever have any questions, concerns, thoughts, or just want to chat please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at president@ncpgaz.org. Thank you again for being a part of the NCPG family and I hope you all have a wonderful start to your year! Sincerely, Ilyssa Reading President 2023-24 president@ncpgaz.org

Number of years you’ve been part of NCPG and why you love it: Since Pregnancy/ Newborn, so this will be my seventh year! I cherish NCPG for the camaraderie in whatever life stage your kids are going through. The class group chats are so valuable as a “pulse check” and to bounce ideas off other Moms. Member to Meet Katherine Augustin, KINDER Children: Daughter - Peyton, age 6, Son - Leo, age 3 Spouse: Dimitrius Augustin Hometown: Phoenix (Arcadia) Career or former career: Field Technology Sales at SHI Favorite activity to do with your kid/s: We love to travel together whether its boogie boarding and building sandcastles at a beach vacation or skiing in Telluride, we are always up for a family adventure! Favorite breakfast spot with your kids: We mostly make breakfast at home with the kids! They love to make eggs and pancakes together. If we are going out it is likely just to La Grande Orange. Favorite meal to cook your family: We make a lot of Asian inspired dishes a home being that my husband is from Taiwan! Dumplings are a favorite in this household. Favorite place to vacation with the family: La Jolla, Newport Beach and Telluride are our happy places but we do try to make it to somewhere new every year as well. Your “can’t live without” travel item/s: The slumberpod used to be a MUST for us but now I would say we love our jet kids ride on suit cases to make the airport just a little more fun and it’s a nice way to avoid a stroller in most cases (and LOTS of snacks). Ways you simplify the bedtime routine: We divide and conquer! Dimitrius does bath time, while I read books with the kids before bed. As the kids are becoming more independent, they are doing a lot of the routine themselves which has been a huge help. The hatch light has also helped a lot with them understanding time more and when the “light” says it is time for bed or time to wake up. Most meaningful moment as a parent: I don’t think there is one most meaningful moment. In our house we are trying to be more present and enjoy every moment our littles want to be with us because we know soon they will be off with friends and less interested in family time. We started making a weekly “family night” where we do something just the 4 of us that is fun for everyone (bowling, movie night, swim night, etc) Best parenting advice given to you: The best advice I got was from my mother and it came when I was pregnant with my first. She told me that whatever energy you put off during pregnancy or parenting is going to affect what you receive from your child. I find this to be so true! Parenting is hard and its hard to stay calm and keep your cool all the time but I find the more I keep my “chill”, the easier those hard times are and the faster the children recover from those tough moments. Best thing learned at NCPG so far: I have learned so many great things from NCPG it is hard to pick just one. I will say the best important thing I have learned is that we are all in this together and we are never alone. If you are struggling with something in parenting or life, likely someone else is as well.

Memories 2023

Meet Our Amazing Teachers! NCPG is delighted to have an outstanding group of teachers returning to NCPG this year, and have also expanded our teacher community with the addition of a fabulous new teacher. We encourage you to get to know each of these highly educated and knowledgeable women.

Monique Couillard-Nelson

NEWBORN A AND NEWBORN B

How many years have you been teaching for NCPG? 25 years. What brought you to NCPG? Stephany VanDyke NP, who was a teacher at the time, asked me to join as we were both working for North Scottsdale Pediatrics. What does NCPG mean to you? I think NCPG is an amazing organization. As an instructor, I am only 50% of the equation. Yes, the teachers offer valuable information, and they bring the moms to NCPG initially, but the other 50% of the equation is the support that moms receive from other moms and the lifelong friendships you will build. There is no other organization like it. It is truly invaluable.

Blaire Hinks CLASS 1A

How many years have you been teaching for NCPG? This will be my 5th year. What brought you to NCPG? Ann Derksen, who I knew growing up was on the board and reached out. She knew that I worked with infants and moms so it was a great fit from the start. What does NCPG mean to you? When you bring a little one into the world, your life changes. Sounds cliché, but it is so true. Your needs as a woman, mom, wife/partner, daughter, and friend have changed. Your role has changed in every single aspect of your life. That role is defined by you solely, however, it is also decorated by who you surround yourself with. The “it takes a village” is a common saying around the world for a reason. To be so many roles at once can be all consuming and overwhelming. Motherhood is a shared experience. You can only grow when others feed you. NCPG has provided that to mothers for years. It is a safe place for mothers to grow and be nurtured, to be seen, to be heard, and to be educated so that they can give to their roles and provide in the best way possible that is right for them. It is a place that allows mothers to bloom in the best way possible. With as many women who come together to educate and support each other, these moms that have NCPG behind them are moving mountains. I am so grateful to be a part of this incredible group!

“There is no way to be a perfect mother, but a million ways to be a good one.” - jill churchill 20 ncpgaz.org

Amy Stewart CLASS 1B

How many years have you been teaching for NCPG? 11 years What brought you to NCPG? I have a passion for parenting, education, pediatric nursing research, and helping build strong parenting communities. What does NCPG mean to you? I love the way NCPG provides the opportunity for members to find support and friendships coupled with evidence-based research and quality education.

Laurel Hamilton CLASS 2A

What brought you to NCPG? This is my second-year teaching for NCPG. My first year was one of growth and learning, so I am excited to be back and implement some changes for my new cohort of parents. I had heard so many wonderful things about NCPG from a fellow Parent Educator. NCPG drew me in because of the support and community it builds, not only for the parents, but for the teachers as well. I am proud to be a part of an organization that adds value to our local families and invests in Arizona’s children. What does NCPG mean to you? What I love most about NCPG is seeing a group of parents bond over shared experiences and support each other inside and outside of the classroom. Many NCPG members come in as new parents or recent transplants to Arizona. NCPG provides a space for them to connect and find community. NCPG hosted events, like the Winter Festival and Sip & Bid, as well as class get togethers, like yoga sessions and playdates, provide many opportunities to connect on a personal level with other families. Yes, the material the educators provide is invaluable and informative, but I believe the icing on the cake is the relationships created among the parents and children.

Kristin Klecka 2B

How many years have you been teaching for NCPG? 7 years. What brought you to NCPG? My cousin, Rebecca Creasman, was on the board and suggested the opportunity to me. She thought with my education background and experience raising my three kids I would be a good fit. I’m so happy she suggested it to me! What does NCPG mean to you? I genuinely believe that NCPG is what every mom needs. Raising kids is extremely difficult and we often feel like we are isolated on an island. NCPG gives people an opportunity to connect, learn, and feel supported through this difficult journey. It means a lot to me to be apart of that journey for people.

Chelsea Kunde CLASS 3A

How many years have you been teaching for NCPG? This will be my fourth year. What brought you to NCPG? I actually was a member myself and loved my years in NCPG. I started when I was pregnant with my oldest. I also was on the board as Education for two years. I think joining NCPG was one of the best things I did as a new mama. What does NCPG mean to you? NCPG is an amazing organization. I felt so lucky to be a member and a board member. So many cities do not have an organization like this. I loved meeting other moms who had kids the same age as me, I loved being able to share the funny moments as well as the stressful ones. The honest support during motherhood is one of my saving graces as a Mom. I love the entire concept of NCPG, education mixed in with building new mom friendships. It was everything and more that I needed as a new mom. Becoming a teacher has been my favorite thing I have done in terms of work. I love learning from each class I have. I love getting to know them and becoming a better mom myself after each class. NCPG is such a special community, and I am thrilled to be a part of it.

Barb Grady CLASS 3B

How many years have you been teaching for NCPG? 31 years! What brought you to NCPG? The director of the Child Study Lab at ASU was a friend of mine, Zita Johnson. She asked me to interview with NCPG and out of my deep respect for her I did. The rest is my lifelong calling! What does NCPG mean to you? Some people are lucky enough to find their calling in life. Teaching NCPG is my calling. It has been my privilege to be of service and to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Helping people create the healthy, happy families they want is something I’m very grateful for.

Emma Porter CLASS 4A

How many years have you been teaching for NCPG? 4 years. What brought you to NCPG? Four years ago I was approached to be an educator for NCPG. I had heard so many wonderful things about NCPG and wished I had joined as a new mom several years ago! I am passionate about educating parents while allowing them to make those connections with other parents. What does NCPG mean to you? Community.

Annemarie Mansour CLASS 4B

How many years have you been teaching for NCPG? This is my 6th year teaching at NCPG. What brought you to NCPG? When my family moved to AZ in 2011, I was looking to continue my work in Parenting Education and was excited to hear that NCPG existed! I was approached a few times to teach at NCPG before I was able to make it work with my schedule and was excited to finally join NCPG in 2017! Parenting education and support is a passion of mine. I believe it is so important for parents to know they are not alone on this journey of parenting and appreciate the ability to help parents feel supported, learn, and build their parenting tool box.

What does NCPG mean to you? NCPG is such a valuable organization that has had such an impact on so many families over the years in the Valley. Being supported during your parenting journey from pregnancy through school-aged children is such a gift. Not only are parents being supported in their journey as a parent, life long friendships are being formed. We moved to Phoenix when my children were 11, 10, 7, 4 and I was shocked at the number of moms that I met who had been a member of NCPG and were still friends with other moms from their classes. I knew this had to be a special organization to have that much impact on such across so many ages of kids. I am so grateful of the fact that I am a part of such an impactful organization!

Lisa Ameis CLASS PRE-K/JK

How many years have you been teaching for NCPG? This will be my third year What brought you to NCPG? I was brought to NCPG by two sweet Moms who were both NCPG Education Coordinators, as well as parents at the school where I work. What does NCPG mean to you? I raised my children in Phoenix and wish I had known about NCPG back then! The information, camaraderie, and opportunity this organization provides to young moms is invaluable. They will form life-long friendships. I’m glad I get to share the knowledge and experience I have as a former educator and a mother with this awesome group!

Jemeille Ackourey KINDER

How many years have you been teaching for NCPG?: 10 years What brought you to NCPG? I was introduced to NCPG by a colleague that hadbeen a member of NCPG. She recommended that I fill in for a teacher that was going on maternity leave. That was the beginning. What does NCPG mean to you? In my career as a psychotherapist, I would tell my clients, “you don’t have to do it alone. Build your network and then most anything becomes doable.” NCPG is that network for moms. It gives moms the skills to not only parent but to do it with confidence. Comradery is built in this safe space held for women, so that they can share their fears and celebrate their successes. NCPG is that place where you can show up sleep deprived, without makeup, needing a good hair wash and feel perfectly normal.

Michelle Cox ELEMENTARY How many years have you been teaching for NCPG? 7 years. What brought you to NCPG? I was teaching for a similar organization and was excited to join NCPG when the opportunity came. What does NCPG mean to you? I love the women of NCPG. The board members work hard to create a welcoming and safe environment for the women who come looking for community and support. Over the years, I have met incredible women who give back to our community and approach their families with the biggest hearts. They are open and eager to learn and support one another. I absolutely love seeing everyone come together!

TEACHER’S CORNER Amy Stewart — 1B

How can parents best support children in reaching developmental milestones?

Learning how to identify milestones while setting realistic expectations for your individual child is the first step in supporting your child’s growth and development.

What advice do you have for managing your child’s emotions?

Creating a safe for your child to feel, express, and identify their emotions promotes healthy coping and emotion management. In addition, modeling your own emotion recognition and management provides a framework for your child.

Laura Hamilton — 2A

How can parents best support children in reaching developmental milestones?

Parents can best support children in reaching developmental milestones by providing varied and open-ended play opportunities. This can be as simple as exploring the environment on a nature walk or creating a sensory bin with dry rice, scoops and cups. Parents can verbalize observations and expand on their child’s vocabulary through these play opportunities. For example, your child notices a bird, points and shouts, “bir!” Parents can respond by stating, “I see the little blue bird! He’s flying up, up, up.”

What advice do you have for managing your child’s emotions?

Confident, resilient children will be able to handle life’s ups and downs. Parents can instill these traits in their child by allowing them to try new things and giving them space to make mistakes. Children are constantly acquiring new information from their personal experiences and building on their prior knowledge about the world around them. Overcoming small challenges will build their resilience for larger setbacks as they grow.
