A Word From Us

NorthBound meets Walkley artist Alan Pennington

Welcome to the September edition of NorthBound Magazine. Our cover feature for this issue is the incedibly talented Alan Pennington, whose work you may have seen dotted about the city. His famous Hendos character takes centre stage for this month’s cover - big thanks to Alan for sending his amazing work over to us. You can read the full interview over on page 42. Elsewhere the enigma that is Jarvis Cocker stopped by for a quick interview last month, shortly after his cave-inspired solo project released a full live gig from the Peak Cavern in Castleton. A much needed distraction from the world’s issues at the moment, we think. That’ll be all from us this month, as always do get in touch to let us know if you’ve enjoyed this issue at paul@northboundmagazine.co.uk.

Bon voyage!

Anne Menary’s new exhibition kicks off this month at Cupola Gallery Anne Menary is a textile and mixed media artist. She graduated in embroidery from Birmingham followed by a teaching Certificate from Goldsmiths College London and has worked as an educator since that time alongside her own art practice.

Anne has learnt and taught many artistic and stitch techniques over the last 25 years but never tires of experimenting and learning. Her interest in making things and the joys of travel began as a child; from experiencing caravan holidays through to imaginary space travel! Anne’s son is a particle physicist so maybe that explains a lot! This exhibition is comprised of images constructed with found objects and recycled materials, which have their own story and journeys prior to their use in Anne’s artworks. These diverse pieces of fabric and objects are then used to construct land, sea and space ‘scapes’ as well as boxes, sculptures and a rather magnificent ‘soft’ spaceship! Karen Sherwood, director at Cupla, said: “Anne’s images always take you on a flight of imagination as there are so many ‘pieces’ to each image. Her ‘pictures’ are patchwork, embroidered, collaged,

stitched and constructed, with abstract and figurative elements and most often with a clear dose of humour thrown in! There are pockets and layers, attached and embedded objects, lace, cotton, silk, wool, threads, words, beads, stones and other ‘found’ elements. Often easily ‘read’ there is always more to them than meets the eye. “There is a joy and innocence to Anne’s work that connects the child in us all and that cannot help but make you smile. In these unprecedented and unusual times, what can be more important than that?” Karen Sherwood, Director. Cupola Contemporary Art, on Middlewood Road, Hillsborough, has been an outlet for local, national and international artists to showcase and sell their work for 29 years and has become a mainstay of the community. Exhibition Dates: 29 August – 3 October – Long Gallery. Cupola Gallery 178a Middlewod Road, Sheffield, S6 1TD.

Bag it for Bluebell comes to Stocksbridge Fox Valley shoppers will have the chance to empty their wardrobes and clear their cupboards as ‘Bag it for Bluebell’ comes to Stocksbridge. The shopping centre will be hosting the charity on Saturday 5th September to coincide with their popular Farmers’ Market. It comes after Fox Valley extended their charity partnership with Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice after much of their planned fundraising activity had to be paused through the pandemic. Now the shopping centre is very much looking forward to welcoming Bluebell Wood’s trusty collections van to collect shoppers’ previously loved items. Rachael Dawes, Corporate Fundraising Manger at Bluebell Wood, said: “We’re delighted to have extended our charity partnership with Fox Valley and we can’t wait for the Farmers’ Market in September. “Our Bag it for Bluebell days are always fantastically well received and, with each bag collected worth an average of £15, people’s generosity helps us make a real difference to local children and families. “A big thank you to Fox Valley for welcoming us - our friendly team will look forward to meeting lots of shoppers in September.” Bluebell Wood’s collection van will be parked at near Iceland and Home Bargains, and all necessary safety precautions will be in place to make sure people feel safe when donating their items. Bag it for Bluebell will then return on the first Saturday of each month following the September 5th visit.

Claire Reynolds, Tenant Liaison Executive at Fox Valley, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Bluebell Wood to Fox Valley and we’re confident our loyal customers will be happy to support such a fantastic charity. “Bluebell Wood means a great deal to so many local families and we’re very much looking forward to working closely with them in the weeks and months ahead.” Everything you need to know about donating pre-loved items to Bluebell Wood can be found herebluebellwood.org/donate-goods

The Dragon of Wantley

The home of Tramlines, Farmers Blonde and some of Yorkshire’s most beautiful scenery, there’s more to North Sheffield than meets the eye. Have you got an interesting historical fact that NorthBound readers need to know? Email paul@ northboundmagazine.co.uk

The Dragon of Wantley is a mythical event of a dragon which was slayed by a knight on Wharncliffe Crags. The tale was hugely popular in the 18th century, and was later recounted in several poetry books of the era. The story goes that a reyt big dragon was reaping havoc on the people of Sheffield. Up steps the fella: the Falstaffian knight Moore of Moore Hall, who obtained a bespoke suit of spiked Sheffield armour and went to battle with the beast. After an all out war, t’owd knight sussed it - he booted the dragon right up its arse. It turns out that this is the weak point of the dragon, as the beast explained with its dying breath. Rumour has it the dragon’s final words were something along the lines of: “Chuff me old chap, you got me right in the old arse-gut.” You learn something knew everyday... www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk | 11

Checkingin Plans submitted for prestigious Radisson Blue Hotel in Sheffield city centre A planning application for the latest round of Heart of the City II proposals has been submitted today, which if approved would see a landmark Radisson Blu hotel open on Pinstone Street. The highly regarded international hotel brand, renowned for its impressive style and excellent customer service, would occupy a prominent location overlooking the Peace Gardens. Designed to enhance Sheffield’s offer as a business and leisure destination, it is anticipated that the addition of a stylish new hotel will help to attract further investment to the city centre. The plans form the most recent phase of the Heart of the City II redevelopment programme, a scheme which is expected to drive Sheffield’s postcoronavirus recovery. The 154-bedroom hotel would be housed behind the Victorian façades of Palatine Chambers and City Mews on Pinstone Street, complete with a sympathetic roof extension. A separate complementary building would incorporate most of the hotel rooms, with secondary lobby access from Burgess Street. Included within the development would be high-quality conferencing facilities, befitting retail and food and beverage units on the ground floor, and the eagerly anticipated rooftop terrace and bar — bringing a new dynamic to the city centre’s social scene.

Sitting between the two core hotel blocks will be a courtyard designed as an enticing social space with seats and atmospheric lighting. Local architects HLM designed the proposals, aiming to celebrate Sheffield’s built heritage through a modern reinterpretation of the city’s Victorian architecture. Andrew Davison, Project Director at Queensberry, said: “After many months of hard work, we’re pleased that an application for the Block A proposals has now been submitted. A huge amount of effort has gone into developing a fresh and contemporary design for the brand-new hotel, while also paying homage to Sheffield’s unique character. “These plans will breathe fresh life into Pinstone Street, and we can’t wait to welcome international hotel brand Radisson Blu to Sheffield.” Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Investment at Sheffield City Council, commented: “We’re delighted to announce that an application has now been submitted for our plans to add a four star+ hotel and rooftop bar to Sheffield city centre. This step marks yet another significant milestone as we continue our progress towards transforming Sheffield’s heart of the city.

the great outdoors

With the Peak District literally on our doorstep, it would be remiss of us to not take advantage of the utterly beautiful walking routes dotted around. So strap on your walking boots and take a walk with us down to Damflask Reservoir.

On the edge of the Peak District, sandwiched between Loxley and Low Bradfield, lies Damflask reservoir. Linked to the nearby Strines, Agden and Dale Dike reservoirs, it was constructed to supply fresh water to the city of Sheffield back in 1896. The name is taken from the village that was washed away in the Great Sheffield Flood of 1864. Damflask Village stood near the site of the current dam wall and had a boozer, corn mill, paper mill, wire mill, blacksmith’s shop and a small amount of houses. Following the flood, the village was never rebuilt and the reservoir was built instead. Whether you’re local to Loxley or Bradfield, or just fancy a hike/drive up to the reservoir, there’s

plenty to do once you arrive. The two universities’ rowing clubs are based on the site, alongside the Sheffield Viking Sailing Club whose members, if you’re lucky, you can catch nipping across the water. The woodlands surrounding the reservoir have always been popular with walkers, especially since the owners of the site, Yorkshire Water, opened the site fully to the public in 2002 and revamped their walking paths to be more accessible.

Twin City

Donetsk: in numbers

Image: Jan Michael C Alonzo

Donetsk, Ukraine

Some facts and tidbits about our brothers and sisters in the Ukraine 2,900,000 - the population of Anshan. -5 - the average temperature in Donetsk in December. Yikes... 130 - the amount of ethnic groups based in the city. Diverse. 57% - of the population are Ukranian, whilst 38% recognise themselves as Russian. 27 - temperatures can reach a highly 27 in the summer.

Twin Steel City

120 billion - the amount of ruples generated by the city’s industrial sector. Roughly works out at £1,211,571,965.

What we love about our twin cities Donetsk, officially, is the fifth largest city in the Ukraine, located in the eastern reaches of the country. The city was actually founded by a Welshman - yup, in 1869 John Hughes built ironworks, steel plants and several coal mines at Aleksandrovka. It was named rather hilariously Hughesovka after the Welshman. The city changed name again in the 1920s under Soviet rule to Stalin, before settling on Donetsk in 1961 during the de-Stalination period ,taking its name from the river Donets. Despite its clear beauty, the city has been the scene of numurous wars over the years and to this day remains in the midst of a battle between Ukrainian and the Donetk People’s Republic. Aside from that, much of the country’s economy is involved with heavy industry, retaining that influence from John Hughes in the 1800s. Image: Techyan

One of the more appealing aspects of Donetsk is its many beautiful parks, including Sheffield Park - named after the Steel City itself which runs along the River Kalmius.

tales of the trade

5 things you only know if you’re a...

Have some interesting tales from your trade? Send them into paul@northboundmagazine.co.uk

...a SOUND ENGINEER You can come across some interesting people in this job If you mean proper musicians that play instruments and perform live, then yes, plenty. If you mean someone from the latest series of X-Factor, then probably not (although there may have been one or two!). There are loads of messy events and stories over the years, but most are far too salacious for the pages of a good wholesome family-friendly magazine. You can have two that are pretty tame. I can tell you for a fact that Damon Albarn will beat you at ping pong, as he is a grand master at it and tours the world with a full-size flightcased table in the back of the articulated truck! And Buster Bloodvessel from Bad Manners is a nightmare and to be avoided. He won’t turn up to soundcheck, pretends things aren’t working, and thinks he’s hilarious. Ha-bloody-ha! If you want the proper gossip and scandal you’ll need to buy me a beer or three and take an oath of silence! When it comes to “making it”, it’s about more than just having talent.

There are obviously a lot of variables, so you can never say for sure; but I can definitely tell if they have the right attitude to make it. In my experience these are: a fantastic hard work ethic, super charming people skills and a mystical ability to capture the zeitgeist, bottle it up with a capitalist fervour and flog it to the eager kids following as you pipe out your merry tunes. Being naturally gifted rarely builds a career in the music industry on its own – although it doesn’t do much harm as long as you also possess the vital attributes above. It’s not all about the technical stuff, you know… Technical skills account for maybe 20% maximum, people skills = 75%. Some situations require you to have immense empathy, patience and emotional understanding; others are a mental and sometimes physical battle that require the response of a savage tyrant! (I would like to thank my former comrades Brian and Ash at The Grapes for many an invaluable lesson here!). The key is deciding which strategy is the appropriate one to take! The

20 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

remainder is split between boozing skills (around 2.5%) and lumping heavy speakers about skills (again 2.5%). It’s a team effort … In most situations. Put someone in a strange venue with no assistance, chances are they’ll spend the entire sound check looking for breakers to turn the rig on and where the microphone stands are kept! The secret behind running a great live venue is the symbiotic relationship between the house team and the touring crew – advancing, maintenance and preparation is vital! Obviously that all goes out of the window when there’s been a three-hour traffic jam on the M1 and the talent turn up 15 minutes before showtime; that’s when the real fun starts and certainly sorts out the pros from the have-a-gos! Some people can get on your nerves “Can you turn my son/daughter up? They’re not loud enough!” “F*ck off!”

They’d like to give special thanks to every single customer they have dealt with in the past, without them the pet shop wouldn’t have that special feeling which keeps people coming back.

Where else but the domineering precense of Scarborough's most iconic hotel? The Grade II-listed building was the largest structure of its kind back when it opened in 1867. Lifeboat Fish Bar

Traditional and family-run chip shops are ten a penny in seaside towns, except of course for the ones down at Scarborough and in particular the Lifeboat Fish Bar. You can find the chipshop on the brisk stroll downhill to the beach at the address below. 76 Eastborough Scarborough, UK

Where to visit:

Peasholm Park

If you've had enough of the beach, it's well worth taking a trip to Peasholm Park. The park is hugely unique due to the fact it has been restored to former glories in recent years after falling into disrepair in the 1970s. Now, it's a tranquil beauty spot and one of the most interesting places in Yorkshire. The trees are unique, the species are unique and the annual naval battle on the boating lake is definitely, very unique. 1 Olympic Way, Queen's Road, BT3 9EP // titanicbelfast. com

Did You Know?

- Peasholm Park Glen is home to two trees from a family that at one point was believed to be extinct - the Dickinson Golden Elm. The Dutch Elm disease of the 70s was thought to have killed it off but low and behold, it's still hill in Peasholm Park. - The last known man to be sentenced to hang in this country was David Chapman in November 1965 for the grisly murder of a swimming pool janitor in Scarborough. - Lorenzo Mitchell Henry caught the world's biggest tuna fish (at the time) in 1933. It weighed in at 851lbs - that's almost as heavy as a grand piano. -The oldest house in the country, approx 8500BC, was found near Scarborough at the Star Carr site near Seamer.

JArvis Cocker

There are three types of Sheffield accent. Blunt Sheffield – which is like a punch in the face to the uninitiated; laconic Sheffield – where you don’t realise your legs have been removed at the knee until you try and walk away; and Jarvis Cocker’s – an accent imprinted on our wider musical and cultural memories. When I rang him on a Monday morning to chat about Beyond the Pale, the excellent new album, life and Sheffield I was struck by how remarkably like himself he sounded. If it helps, read the following interview with his voice in mind to get the complete effect! How are you this fine Monday? I am very well, thank you. It isn’t particularly fine, weather-wise. It is raining – which is fine enough, of course, if you’re the weather and that’s what you want to do, I suppose. I currently waging war on a squirrel. Before you ask, it was the squirrel who started it. It was stealing the food I was putting out for the birds. The situation has escalated. My war will be conducted in a humane fashion – with traps and peanut butter – but the squirrel must go. It must go five miles or it will come back, apparently. Do you find that you still respond to those subtle cycles in our lives? Yes. I suppose there’s always that Friday lift and that Monday lull; and then how those cycles repeat on a wider level. A lift in spring, a slowdown in autumn. I suppose the other thing is that I come from Sheffield, where there are other rhythms, like the rhythm of work, which is ingrained in Sheffield. The city changed so much while I was away. I really noticed those changes when I came back. Bear in mind that when I left Sheffield, it was fucked – and now it has more going for it and a better-looking future. But historically it’s self-defined itself as a working place. The steel, the coal, the heavy industries, the services that supported them … and that rhythm hasn’t left. Those rhythms of life are part of larger rhythms and cycles in nature and history. We feel the Friday lift and the Monday slump when we feel spring arrive or winter knocking on the door. We’re part of one now. We’re at a point of change – in so many ways. Has it been odd? Watching what’s happening and sensing changes on a screen because of Covid? We live on screens now – and it’s no wonder their inventors don’t let their kids play with them, because they’re designed to be more addictive than any substance yet discovered! Have you noticed that ever since screens infiltrated our daily lives our elections now are all 48% against 52% either way? The landslides and popular surges and groundswells of the past are gone. We live in a world of apparent colour and texture and nuance on our screens, but increasingly we think like a binary code. Right/Wrong. Off/On. Friend/ Enemy. There’s no middle ground where we can come together. It’s odd that devices that are supposed to bring us closer together end up polarising us more and more … Well, yes. Irony would be the word here, I think. Everything is on a grid. Every noise, every sound, every emotional moment is reduced to a little coloured bar on a screen. Regardless of what the music is telling us it wants, regardless of what our emotions are telling us that we need, we can’t resist the urge to make it into a nice neat pattern. Beyond the Pale has very inventive arrangements. Were they a reaction to that urge to neaten? They were a reaction to the reaction, if you see what I mean? We workshopped a lot of this music by playing it live in places where music was never supposed to be played live, places like Peak Cavern. We had ideas, little pieces of music that we thought might go somewhere. It was in playing them to an audience that they developed; and they did so in reaction to the audience response and energy. That’s a really interesting approach, because nowadays a lot of albums are written by email exchange – but you actually did what older bands used to – you road-tested your material … Well, cavern-tested, I suppose. But yes. And it’s an interesting thing. If you think about it, music since the dawn of time has been listened to by communal audiences. The album is a recent invention. It’s what? 80 years old at the outside. The idea of music as an individual thing that’s for you and you alone in your headphones is even more recent than that – and that’s the point where the album that was the snapshot of the communal experience became

atomised into the download culture we have now. I still think in terms of albums, rightly or wrongly. The other thing to remember, of course, is that even in Pulp we had lots of very long songs, or songs with very long sections. We’d hang on to make a musical point far longer than most other bands ever would because it led somewhere interesting in terms of the music or the emotion or the story that was being told. It sounds like the workshopping process was very productive? It was. It’s a great way to work. I’m actually really sorry that Covid has buggered it up for the foreseeable for two reasons. The first is that we’d built such momentum that I really wanted to keep going and crack on with the next album in the same way. Towards the end in Pulp, it took us longer and longer to make albums because we wanted to make sure we’d explored every possibility to make sure we had the best one. Here, though, I couldn’t give in to that slightly obsessive tendency. I had to let it go. The music was happening now; the crowd was reacting to it now. Are there any songs you can point to in particular that really shows that process happening? ‘Must I Evolve?’ definitely benefitted, yes. The performance the album song is built on was recorded up at Peak Cavern. You know elite athletes who meticulously prepare to make sure nothing goes wrong when the gun goes? Well, everything went wrong. Everyone was telling us that it was going to sound horrible, because apparently geographic events don’t build acoustically perfect venues for gigs – which is nonsense, by the way. The sound was fantastic. Then an amplifier blew up. Then I had pages and pages of lyrics and I wanted to fit them all in but I couldn’t remember them all … Speaking of lyrics, I said in the review that you seemed to be working from similarly strong literary and cultural traditions to someone like Dylan, but where he tends to floats into abstraction, yours are always rooted: to a place, to a time, to an idea, to a process. Is that fair, or am I barking up the wrong tree? Well, I think it’s a bit of both. I’m not going to claim it for the creative industries but everyone knows when they’ve done a good job; when they hit the deadline and just have to hand it in as is; and when, actually, you get out of your own way and let the process do the heavy lifting you keep micro-managing back to yourself. ‘Must I Evolve?’ is an excellent example of the latter. I had pages of lyrics that I thought were all important, but the ones that were, were the ones that came

out when they needed to. By contrast, ‘Swanky Modes’ was more tied to a narrative and the lyrics came out more methodically. ‘Am I Missing Something?’ was me listening to the music and linking phrases together to see where both took me. Not quite cut-andpaste, but gesturing towards it. What also changed was that I was also writing for female voices … Yes. I noticed that you don’t use them like most artists do, to beef up the hook. They really add to the arrangements and the depth of the sound. Well, there’s a little hook-beefing going on, but of course what it also does is open up the perspectives and the avenues you have. In Pulp, nobody else admitted to being able to sing, so I ended up doing it! It’s one of the reasons why we used a lot of interesting instruments for texture and tone – for the contrast. Of course, another reason we used odd instruments in Pulp was because we were reclaiming them, in a way. Cheap-shop xylophones and what-have-you. Stuff that had been thrown on the scrapheap. I felt like that when I came out of school in Sheffield. I was full of ideas and ready to go – and there was nowhere to go because avenues for working-class kids like me had been very deliberately and cynically shut down. Pulp – something made to be thrown away; something disposable; something cheap and nasty. Well, let’s make virtues out of them. Let’s make something with them. This is what ‘Children of the Echo’ is talking about, isn’t it? Being after one Big Bang and before the next? Exactly. I was born at the height of Beatlemania – but as I was in nappies, it largely passed me by. There was the sense of being after something; of having missed a big, big moment – and it was big. It was four members of the working classes creating the most significant cultural moment of the twentieth century. They weren’t supposed to; the Establishment didn’t endorse it; it didn’t come through the official channels as it were, but it still happened. The more copies you make, the less powerful the archetype becomes. I think we’re reaching that. David Bowie is a wonderful artist, but how many times does he need to be on the cover of Mojo magazine? How many times do we need to replay the past in the shape of the 25th anniversary of; the 40th anniversary of; the 50th anniversary of before we get to a moment that’s genuinely now and transformative? Always rounded up numbers, never the 13th anniversary. Exactly. If you were being cynical you might say it’s a way of repackaging what you’ve already bought and reselling it to you – so I won’t be cynical, but say that after all that’s been happening the last ten years or so, we’re at a moment of change. It could go one way or the other, but something new will come out of this. That’s my optimistic take on it and I’m sticking to it! Beyond the Pale is out now via Rough Trade www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk | 37

Mr Boot’s Folly It stands as though it has always been there as part of the land before the earliest tribes before Saxons and Normans and enclosures and roads and reservoirs. It sits in moor-edge green sward amongst sheep and the occasional steer like a lonely seeking friend like a builder’s enduring pronouncement or a pointer to something or other. It invites the unanswerable question over again to all who look and admire why here and what purpose why then and with what aim in view when there was so much more to do? Mr Boot may tell us if we could only ask him although perhaps a private man that to him it was simply a watch tower a place to which he could climb so as to look out to where his life-love rested. Mr Boot may tell us if we could only ask him that in a difficult time between wars he needed work for skilled, hard, hands through a project making a statement about strength and resolution and hope. Mr Boot may tell us if we could only ask him that it was simply a family retreat up there across the rhododendron park a place for children’s games and picnic teas upstairs in their towered castle. It stands as though it has always been there a part of the past before we built our own lives before we assembled what materials we could to make our own follies. Image courtesy of Russell Hague

Art, With Heart! Local artist Alan Pennington chats to Northbound about his renowned work, why Sheffield inspires him and how it feels to be a part of the city’s lineage of incredible artists... Hi Alan, how are you getting on at the moment? I’m doing really good thanks! It’s been quite a crazy time for everyone in recent months hasn’t it? But thankfully I’ve been able to put my skills to good use during that time. I think the shake up of normal day-to-day life has given me a lot of new ideas and exciting artwork, alongside a real appreciation for the amazing things we have in our lives, which we perhaps take for granted. I’m feeling very inspired and energised this year with a lot of great ideas for artwork that will go live throughout 2020. Could you introduce yourself to our readers who may not have met the man behind the Hendos piece yet! Of course… Hello all! I’m Alan Pennington - Sheffield born artist and designer with a huge love for the Steel City! I’ve been working in the design industry since 2007, and specialised in my artwork of the people and places of Sheffield for a big chunk of that time. You may have seen my “I love Sheffield” mugs in shops and online over the years, or met me at various Art shows like Art in the Gardens or the Victorian Christmas Market at Kelham. My most recent big piece was the beacon of hope “Stay Home Save Lives” Henderson’s Relish character, which featured on the electronic billboards around Sheffield during lockdown. How did you get into drawing? For me, it began when I was really young. I was forever doodling and sketching on scraps of paper or whatever I could find including the back of my school books, on beer mats or wine wrap when I got a lot older! I loved the idea of being able to draw and create anything I liked, the only limit

being my imagination and being able to make it happen with my fingertips! My Grandparents would buy me The Beano each week and I lose count how many hours I would spend attempting to recreate the comic strips myself. Then once I could draw a character well enough, I’d make my own comic strips to send to The Beano. At school, the other kids would often gather round me as I was drawing in my lunch hour and sometimes put in requests. It always amazed me that people wanted my drawings, I loved creating cartoons for fun, so being able to do something that made others happy too was great. How would you describe your work? Art with Heart! I like to think of it as a warm hug in a frame. My aim from the beginning has always been to create pieces that instantly give you that fuzzy feeling inside because you relate so much to the subject in the artwork. Most of my pictures are based on my own relationship with the City. Initially, the iconic buildings around Sheffield, which meant something to me in different capacities, heavily inspired me. Record Collector was somewhere I adored whiling away the hours inside, searching for hidden gems amongst the CDs. Whilst ROXY was a huge cathedral of a venue I was too young to ever get into, but would draw my attention every time I got off the bus into town, making me wonder what was inside it. That’s the key to my artwork right there; if you’re not from Sheffield a building might not mean anything to you, but to those of us who know and love the city, those buildings are full of memories. It’s like being in our own exclusive club The I love Sheffield Club!

Is there a particular commission or personal piece that is a highlight for you? Perhaps one successful one or a unique, lesser known one? I have a rule which I’ve stuck by since I began selling my artwork back in 2007, and it’s always been that if I wouldn’t put the piece on my own walls at home, it doesn’t make the cut to be seen or bought by the “outside world”. Sounds very dramatic, but I get a feeling about each new piece, so I do feel each one that passes that test is very special. I have sketchbooks brimming with ideas and test sketches for new stuff. Some of them have sat in the book for five years until the time to do the piece justice came around and I can bring them to life. I am very proud of what is probably my most successful piece, the Henderson’s Relish character who features in a few of my artworks and made it onto the billboard during lockdown. I’ve also had some great commissions over the years and it’s always fun to recreate a special moment for people. Pieces that stand out include a painting of someone’s dog looking up at a bowl of Shreddies whilst sat next to an Aga oven. It was unexpected but looked awesome. I recently finished a brilliant commission of a couple enjoying an ice

cream at the seaside during winter. It had become a tradition for them to make this trip and capturing that in the piece was so fun to do and looked superb – they were over the moon with it. My largest commission was by Graysons Solicitors. They asked me to create a lot of one-off pieces, which you would only ever see if you visited their Head Office in Sheffield. A favourite of mine was of their original office in Paradise Square in the snow. It was also released as a very limited edition mug for their staff and guests. My Gran saw the design and loved it so much I ran an extra one off for her, which comes out of the cupboard every Christmas for her hot chocolate. Just to touch on Sheffield a bit – does the city itself inspire you? Our Walkley readers would love to know how that little part of the city inspires you too… Oh definitely so, my love for Sheffield runs deep. I was born here and it’s where I’ll always call home. The city is full of memories for all of us, whether you’ve been here your whole life, for a few years during uni or work or just for a great night out. I love the people and places of our great city and the fact you can walk down to the newsagents, and www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk | 45

within that one minute trip, you’ve been greeted with “Ey up” or “Orite” half a dozen times by people you’ve never met before. It makes you believe in folk, I love that about Yorkshire life. I take most of my inspiration from the great characters I meet or see around the City alongside the beautiful iconic buildings and places that are brimming with their own stories. Walkley in particular means a lot to me as it’s become my home for the last ten years when I returned from uni and finally got a place of my own. I love all the little shops and parks around the area, and how easy it is to head into town for some inspiration and a bit of culture. When I first moved to Walkley, I remember spotting so many places around the area which featured in the Full Monty film and having a proper geek moment. I especially love the views from Walkley. My attic instantly became my studio, as the panorama up there is truly wonderful. I would sit and watch the world go by, picking out the landmarks along the skyline as the colours of the day changed – The old ski village, Owlerton Stadium, The Bassett’s Factory, “Gaz’s flat” from the Full Monty Film, Hillsborough Football ground and all the way out to the countryside where the houses become less and less, and the rolling green hills sprawl for miles into Bradfield.

I take most of my inspiration from the great characters I meet or see around the City alongside the beautiful iconic buildings and places that are brimming with their own stories.

In terms of events, you worked on Herd of Sheffield, Art in the Gardens, even designed mugs and beer labels – of those types of ‘’events’’ which has been your standout? I’ve been very fortunate to work on some really special projects over the years. The beer labels for Lost Industry were one of my first big projects where I took my artwork off canvas and onto a product. That will always hold a special 46 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

place in my heart. Since then, I’ve had my work feature in magazines, on lorry sides, billboards and even on TV! The standout moments in my career so far have been when Graysons Solicitors asked to work with me on creating exclusive art for their new premises back in 2017. This has since become the single largest collection of my artwork in the country. I was also very flattered to have a number of celebrities purchase my work, including Reverend Kate Bottley (BBC Radio 2 & Gogglebox) and Gemma Atikinson!

How have the city’s other artists inspired you? I can certainly see small bits of McKee and Scarborough in your work… Sheffield has a wealth of truly fantastic artists and people who know their craft very well. It’s one of the significant things about the city, that there are so many wonderfully talented creatives around and that we’re all very supportive of each other. Both Joe and Pete are two such examples of inspiring and brilliant Sheffield artists, and I’ve had the pleasure of chatting with them both – certainly a momentous occasion in my life! I’d say the unapologetically bold and bright colours are definitely inspired by both McKee and Scarborough and I always find it a huge complement if someone says “ooh, your stuff reminds me a little of…” How does it feel being synonymous with a city’s culture? It makes me feel incredibly proud, it really does. Sheffield means so much to me, and has given me a strong subject to kick-start my career in art alongside a supportive platform to put my work out there and for it to be seen and enjoyed by so many. It never ceases to make my day every time someone buys a piece of art or a print or mug from me, as it tops up that confidence that I’m creating things people treasure and that will bring them as much joy as it does me to do the thing I love for a living. And finally if one might fancy a personal commission from yourself, how would they go about it? Ooh I always love a good commission; hearing people’s personal stories about an event or a place that means a lot to them and being able to capture that snapshot exactly in my style for them to keep forever makes me very happy. What is Medisculpt Therapy? Dr Grace from G&M Healthcare, Sheffield’s premier weight loss clinic, explains the benefits of Medisculpt therapy... MediSculpt Therapy is a non-surgical weight loss program used to improve overweightness, obesity and some chronic medical conditions like Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, high cholesterol, hypertension and sleep apnoea. Medisculpt Therapy comprises of three main components; the diet which is based on high protein foods with low carbohydrate and low fat contents and two body contouring treatments, LPG Endermologie and Vanquish Me TM or Exilis Elite machines. The body contouring treatment LPG Endermologie is used for skin tightening in order to prevent the development of loose and sagging skin during and after the rapid weight loss. The second body contouring machine is a radio frequency machine for body fat reduction. We have two machines either the Exilis Elite or the Vanquish Machine, and the choice of which machine to use depends on the treatment package and area of the body requiring treatment. The radio frequency machines result in a significant fat reduction in targeted areas like the tummy, thighs or arms. These treatments are carried out weekly by our fully trained therapists and last about 30-40 minutes each. In total you need about 75-90 minutes per week for your treatments. Weight loss with MediSculpt Therapy is safe, efficient and rapid. The weight loss progress is constantly monitored by a qualified GP and fully trained therapists who check weight loss progress, blood pressure, body fat content, metabolic rates and do blood tests on a regular basis. With regard to the results we know from experience that a female patient will typically lose one stone a month and a male patient will typically lose one to one and a half stones a month. MediSculpt Therapy consists of six phases which deliver amazing, safe, efficient and sustainable weight loss. During phase 1 of MediSculpt Therapy the diet comprises of 5 meals and one snack a day. Protein foods are filling and hence patients don’t feel hungry. To supplement the diet some fruit and vegetables are also allowed on the diet. The vegetables can be boiled, steamed, roasted, grilled or stir fried. Herbs and spices can be added to increase flavour. We also do metabolic tests to check your metabolic rates and also provide supplements to ensure you don’t lack in essential minerals like magnesium, potassium, sodium chloride, calcium and trace minerals. You need to fast for at least 4 hrs before your metabolic test or initial blood test.

Once the phase 1 target is achieved after loosing about 70% of your target weight we move patients onto phase 2 of the diet where we introduce normal foods like weighed amounts of chicken, meat, fish and diary like eggs. And once 90% of your target weight loss is achieved we wean patients to measured amounts of normal eating on phase 3. Thereafter phases 4-6 are stabilisation phases to ensure that optimum weaning off from the diet is achieved without putting on back the weight you have lost on. Once you have achieved your stabilisation phases we have a life long maintenance programme where we offer 6 weekly follow ups for review by a therapist who measures your weight and body fat composition. Follow up is then 3-6 monthly for one year or as required thereafter. Cost of the program depends on the package you choose. We have 3 price packages, basic, standard and deluxe. All packages consist of your consultation fee (£100) and blood test fee (£100) followed by the package fees. Supplement prices are £50/month but vary depending on the package you choose. The basic package is £125/week for only food. The standard package is £250/week for food and body contouring treatments with LPG Endermologie and Vanquish or Exilis Elite. The deluxe package is £300/week and includes food, body contouring treatments, supplements, 4 weekly reviews and blood tests. So if you or someone you love needs help to lose a stone or more and become a healthy weight, why not try our reliable and rapid weight loss program MediSculpt Therapy. We are offering a free informal consultation with our friendly and approachable GP, so if you would like to learn more and have your weight and body fat composition checked then Please call us on 0114 233 5000 or text us on 07944629727 or email us on g.m.healthcarereception@gmail.com. RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Taken from the brand new book, mymuybueno, available on Amazon and mezepublishing.co.uk now.

salted caramelcake Serves: 8

For the base 80g cashews 80g macadamias 50g almonds 45g buckwheat 45g desiccated coconut 45g rice malt or maple syrup 80g Medjool dates, pitted Pinch of Himalayan salt For the caramel centre 200g Medjool dates, pitted 60ml coconut oil, melted 110g almond butter 125ml maple syrup Âź tsp vanilla powder 1/8 tsp Himalayan salt

For the base Place the cashews, macadamias and almonds in a food processor then blitz to small pieces. Add the buckwheat, coconut, syrup and dates then continue to process. The mixture will start to combine; when that happens transfer it into a round 20cm cake tin lined with baking paper. Press the base evenly into the base of the tin and place in the freezer to firm up. For the caramel centre Blend the dates, coconut oil, almond butter, maple syrup, vanilla powder and salt in the food processor. The mixture needs to be completely smooth so continue blending until all the lumps have disappeared. Spread the caramel over the set base and put the tin back into the freezer while you make the chocolate topping. For the topping Melt the cacao butter in a saucepan over a very low heat. Ensure it has completely melted, then combine the cacao butter with the cacao powder, maple syrup in a bowl. Whisk until you have a glossy mixture. Be careful not to allow it to seize. If you are in a cold environment, you must be very quick at this stage. Pour the chocolate topping over the caramel in the tin and push it around quickly with a silicone spatula to spread it well and leave swirls on the top. Place the cake into the freezer to set overnight. Remove from the freezer 10 minutes before you wish to serve the cake, to allow it ample time to thaw and be easy to cut. Sprinkle the flaked sea salt on top before serving.

For the chocolate topping 60g cacao butter 40g cacao powder 50ml maple syrup Âź tsp flaked sea salt

Trust in Mercedes The German car maker came out on top in a new trust survey

62 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

Mercedes-Benz is the UK’s most trusted car brand, according to the 2020 CarGurus Car Buyer Trust Index report, a first-of-its-kind study commissioned by online automotive marketplace CarGurus. The German car maker topped a list of 21 manufacturers that have been ranked as part of the inaugural CarGurus Car Buyer Trust Index, a new independent report that provides unprecedented insight into how perceived trust impacts decisionmaking among different genders and age groups. Audi, Ford, Toyota and Volvo completed the top five with Fiat recording the lowest overall brand ranking. Researchers at GlobalWebIndex asked 2,183 car-buyers to rank car makers on five key factors that build trust: integrity, transparency, genuineness, social conscience and reliability. This formulated the overall performance

for each brand. 21 car makers were included in the Index, with 20 based on sales data from The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Ltd (SMMT) with Tesla added as a brand of topical interest. In addition, the report also showed how men and women differ when it comes to trusting automotive brands. Mercedes-Benz was most trusted overall by male car buyers whereas Audi and Ford shared the top spot as the brands in which women put the most faith. There were greater differences of opinion among some of the other brands, though. Kia, rated as second overall for men, was a lowly 15th for women. MINI, on the other hand, was ranked fifth overall by women and 15th by men.

Petrolban brought forward “For consumers, having trust in a purchase – and who they are buying it from – is fundamental to the buying journey. Therefore, we created the CarGurus Car Buyer Trust Index to help gain a deeper understanding of how trust is built, and the extent to which it informs car-buying decisions,” said Chris Knapman, CarGurus’ UK editor. “The Car Buyer Trust Index provides unprecedented insight into the role that trust plays in the car buying process, while at the same time showing our commitment to becoming the world’s most trusted and transparent car-buying platform.” Founded by TripAdvisor co-founder Langley Steinert, CarGurus combines dealer reviews with comprehensive car valuation analytics to bring trust and transparency to the automotive marketplace, allowing buyers to quickly and easily find great deals from the best dealers. The announcement was made at the UN Climate Summit. The announcement was made at the UN Climate Summit. The government has announced that the UK is bringing forward a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans to 2035. The ban was announced ahead of the launch of a UK-hosted UN climate summit, and will include hybrids for the first time. This effectively means that only new electric or hydrogen vehicles could be sold after this date, which will inevitably strongly impact the makeup of vehicles in UK dealerships and on our roads over the next 1520 years. Alongside Sir David Attenborough at the event, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that “2020 must be the year we turn the tide on global

warming” and is setting out these plans as part of the UK’s commitment to hit a 2050 net zero emissions target. The PM called for international efforts to reach net zero as early as possible through investment in cleaner, greener technology, preservation of our natural habitat and measures to improve resilience to climate change impact. David Attenborough said: “Now although we have agreed on the problem we have to do something about it. We don’t need to emphasise that the longer we leave it... the worse it is going to get. So now is the moment. It is up to us to organise the nations of the world to do something about it.”
