Welcome to the first edition of NorthBound Magazine. It’s a strange thing, launching a new magazine. At least half of the team here have been involved in North Sheffield publications in one form or another for over 30 years. We know we can put together a good magazine, but with NorthBound, we want this to be YOUR magazine. It’s news for YOU. It’s features about people in YOUR area and it’s shining a spotlight on some of the fantastic local businesses this side of the Steel City. Speaking of, in this mag we’re taking a look at some of Sheffield’s finest micropubs including Brass Monkey, the brand new Northern Monkey on Middlewood Road and Bradfield Brewery’s two pubs, one of which features in our piece on Damflask reservoir. The Peak District is a truly beautiful place which we are all so lucky to be within a short drive of. Get out and make the most of it this summer, eh?

You’ll have noticed by now that our launch issue is, quite rightly, dedicated to Tramlines Festival 2019. It’s an absolute pleasure to have such a massive event in our jurisdiction and no matter what anybody says, it’s only a positive thing for our city. Launching NorthBound Magazine in style, we got local lad and Milburn frontman Joe Carnall Jr in for a natter about the festival and his latest project Good Cop Bad Cop, recorded with Matt Helders (from a little band called the Arctic Monkeys – heard of ‘em?) in LA. We’ll also be looking at all the family offerings for this year alongside interviews with Tramlines’ PR man Alex Deadman and Sheffbased up-and-comers Oddity Road.

EDITORS

Elsewhere, our first Local Hero is Marilyn from the North Sheffield Conservation Group who does supremely important work in the community. More from her on page 19. But most importantly, we hope you enjoy this here magazine. Feedback is important, and if the community isn’t happy with it, well, tell us! If you love it, tell us that too! After all, this is a magazine for you and for you only. That’s the only thing that matters to us.

Stocksbridge Clock Tower has been officially dedicated as a Centenary Field protected site

The historical significance of the Stocksbridge Clock Tower on Nanny Lane is myriad. Built in 1923 as a war memorial in honour of British soldiers who were killed in action on the battlefields of World War 1, this structure, surrounded by idyllic country beauty, does a little more than keep accurate time. In the very near future that purpose will expand significantly as it officially becomes the fourth commemorative field in Sheffield to honour, in remembrance, the centenary of the war. Led by The Fields in Trust, in conjunction with the British Royal Legion and a number of local authorities, this programme seeks to create, preserve and maintain natural beauty spots across the UK and Northern Ireland. In order to maintain the legacy of these fallen soldiers, 200 new trees will be planted in Stocksbridge and throughout Sheffield. Addressing these plans was cabinet member for culture, parks and leisure councillor Mary Lea, who responded to questions regarding the importance of the park: “This work further demonstrates and brings together the commitments

of our Better Parks initiative, where we have pledged to make our parks the very best that they can be, and our woodlands strategy which sets out how we will make the city’s trees thrive and flourish. If we’re able to designate all our memorial tree sites as Fields in Trust we will have the highest number of centenary fields of any of the English core cities outside of London and wherever you live in the city you’ll be able to remember lost loved ones in a local park. “People in Sheffield are passionate in honouring the memory of those who have died in conflict and they’re also very proud of our treasured green spaces. A dedicated centenary field perfectly celebrates these values and recognises the importance of peaceful places of remembrance.”

Sheffield Forgemasters donates thousands to Weston Park in honour of former employee Stannington’s Nigel Hobson passed away in 2018 Upon the death of beloved employee Nigel Hobson who sadly passed away in 2018 from heart complications, local steel manufacturer Sheffield Forgemasters has pledged £2,500 to Weston Park Cancer Charity. Hobson was a dedicated employee who had recently completed a degree as a mature student, and who worked as a steel manufacturer for Forgemasters at the company’s Melt Shop. John Hepworth, reliability engineer in the Melt Shop, told Northbound Magazine: “I was lucky enough to work with Nigel for more than 11 years and it is fantastic that the management here has pledged this money to support the incredible work that is done for cancer patients at Weston Park Hospital and to commemorate Nigel’s life.” Nigel died at the age of 62, having retired from Forgemasters in July

2018 after 14 years of service and had been diagnosed with cancer just prior to his retirement. He had previously been treated for cancer at Weston Park Hospital in 1994 and underwent further treatment at the hospital in 2018. Sam Dixon, CEO at Weston Park Cancer Charity, said: “Our vision as a charity is to help create a better life for everyone affected by cancer, both now and in the future, and with the generous support of Sheffield Forgemasters, we can continue to give patients and their families access to the very best cancer care services. “The money will directly benefit cancer patients across our region through projects which provide practical help to those in need, emotional support to those in despair and enhanced care for those who need it most.” Nigel’s widow, Karen, joined staff at Forgemasters as they presented the cheque to Weston Park Cancer Charity.

The home of Tramlines, Farmers Blonde and some of Yorkshire’s most beautiful scenery, there’s more to North Sheffield than meets the eye. Have you got an interesting historical fact that NorthBound readers need to know? Email paul@ northboundmagazine.co.uk

Samuel Fox’s Umbrella Sheffield: the home of steel, real ale and, erm, the modern day umbrella. It was in the small – and often rainy, one would imagine – village of Stocksbridge, pretty much as north of the city you can get before the border of Barnsley, that Samuel Fox & Company produced the world’s first steel framed ‘paragon’ umbrella back in 1848, replacing the outdated whalebone design and quickly finding itself in high demand across Europe. The credit for this goes to Fox’s co-worker and friend Joseph Hayward, who devised

the revolutionary shift in brolly fashion. The story goes that Hayward was a favourite of the factory owner Samuel Fox and when an employee informed Mr Fox that Joseph was kipping on the job, he replied: “Thee go and mind thy work; he’s worth more to me asleep than thou art waken.” So, dear reader, next time it’s peeing it down in the Steel City, you can thank fellow Sheffielders Joseph Hayward and Samuel Fox that you no longer have to hold a chunk of whale over your head.

Reverendand theMakersand Thornbridge to releasecollaborativeale With the advent of their forthcoming Best Of album, Sheffield’s Reverend and the Makers have re-joined forces with the Thornbridge Brewery to re-release their classic Summer Ale. Ed Cosens, lead guitarist and co-founder of the band, originally allied with the brewery to produce the drink back in 2013. This year, they have got back with Thornbridge and together have released the ale in casks, with a bottle that is also soon to come. For those of you not in the know, the Reverend and the Makers Summer Ale is a 4.8% pale ale, with a golden colour and a light palate. It is easy and refreshing with a floral finish that has been a fan favourite for the last five years. Speaking to Exposed about the ale, Ed Cosens said:

Paces awarded £7,000 by National Lottery Community Fund

More than £20,000 has beenawarded toPacesby charities this year

"The original Summer Ale still sticks out in mine and many people’s minds. I regularly get asked about it when talking to people about beer and I'm made up to have the chance to brew it again." Following the initial success of the Summer Ale, Reverend and the Makers helped produce a further three ales for Thornbridge, including American Brown Ale, Bang Saray and Mirrors. Simon Webster, co-founder of the Thornbridge Brewery, said:

"The first time we worked with Reverend and the Makers we made such an incredible beer and we’ve had such a great relationship brewing so many beers with the band over the years. When Ed approached me about re-releasing the original brew to tie in with the Best Of album, I was delighted and I can’t wait to see it out there." High Green’s Places School has been awarded £6,640 from the National Lottery’s Community Fund to support its up and coming summer school programme. Paces School will be offering two weeks’ Summer School provision for up to 16 children, starting at the end of July. This grant, plus the one received from Children In Need earlier in the year to the tune of £17,500, will support this.

The Summer School will offer a full conductive education programme but it will be interspersed with a range of fun summer activities, which will take place every afternoon. Paces was established in the 1990s by a small group of parents who recognised the benefits of conductive education for their children with cerebral palsy.

news

Following the success of their first venue, Matt Helders and James O’Hara’s second Ambulo cafe has opened at Weston Park Museum. The team behind the award-winning cocktail bar Public and Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders opened their first café at the Millennium Gallery back in February. Speaking about the ethos behind Ambulo, O’Hara told Northbound: “From natural wine, speciality coffee and cocktails to the food, Ambulo wants to provide delicious produce with all the associated pretension and fetishisation stripped away. “Great food and drink shouldn’t intimidate. It shouldn’t be hidden under a

veil of impenetrable information and over-complicated descriptions. It should be able to be enjoyed by everyone from all generations and all backgrounds. “It’s been a long time in the making, we probably had the idea about three years ago. Definitely pre-Public, so it’s great to see something go from being something in your head to reality.” Matt Helders added: “Me and James (O’Hara) have been friends for a long time and we’ve been chatting about opening a restaurant for years. It’s great to be working with his team to bring Ambulo to life and particularly great to be doing this together in our home town. With my ‘day job’ I’ve been lucky enough

Sheffield council back Universal Basic Income trial “UBI has the potential to be a bold, radical change to how our economy and society works”

“In order to face up to these realities, I think it is completely right that radical solutions are considered. “As a council, we are getting behind this and committing to looking at this further and working with a Labour government in trialling this.”

Sheffield council leader Julie Dore has backed plans for a Universal Basic Income trial in Sheffield. Last month, the shadow chancellor John McDonnell named Sheffield as one location for Universal Basic Income trials under a future Labour government. A feasibility study commissioned by the shadow chancellor suggested a pilot scheme would work in the UK, following a report published by campaign group UBI LAB Sheffield. Julie Dore said of the trial: “UBI has the potential to be a bold, radical change to how our economy and society works with benefits for people’s wellbeing and how we support people in need. 16 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

McDonnell told The Mirror last month: “I’d like to see a Northern and Midlands town in the pilot so we have a spread. I would like Liverpool – of course I would, I’m a Scouser. But Sheffield have really worked hard. I’ve been involved in their anti-poverty campaign and they’ve done a lot around the real living wage. I think those two cities would be ideal and somewhere in the Midlands.” Sheffield Equality Group’s Jason Leman explains the concept. “A Universal Basic Income might allow people to create more fulfilment and meaning in their lives. There would be greater choice over the paid work that we do, and the activities done outside of paid work. The idea raises the potential for a different future and a different way of living.” Universal Basic Income was recently trialled by Finland for two years and Scotland are currently making enquiries into the feasibility of the scheme. The concept centres around reducing inequality by introducing regular cash payments for all adults, regardless of their salary situation. Read the full report here: tinyurl.com/y6dzzngb

LOCAL HERO

Marilyn Sanderson CHAIrOFNorthSheffieldConservationGroup

Marilyn has been chair of the North Sheffield Conservation Group for 27 years. Ever since the North Sheffield Conservation Group was set up 27 years ago, local Marilyn has been the chair. Back then, several trees were being cut down near where Marilyn lived. The council called a meeting with the locals about the woodland management and from this meeting, the North East Sheffield Conservation Group was formed, later changing their name to North Sheffield Conservation Group after their voluntary work expanded. Marilyn joined the group because she was concerned about the trees and felt passionate about keeping Sheffield green. “I’ve always been an outside sort of person,” Marilyn tells us. “I’m very passionate about the outdoors and I believe that conserving the countryside is absolutely vital. It’s not healthy for people to live amongst concrete – human beings need to be in green spaces and concrete is not a healthy thing to live in!” After running for a couple of years, the NSCG then applied for funding for an officer. The officer would coordinate with other voluntary groups and would also be trained in conservation and woodland management. The officer taught Marilyn and other mem-

bers of the NSCG conservation and woodland management skills. The NSCG eventually registered as a charity in order to ensure that the group would keep going. Their status as a charity enabled them to raise money for equipment that they could use on their voluntary ventures. The NSCG do a variety of voluntary work such as picking up litter and keeping the natural environment clean. By doing this, they make countryside paths and walkways, such as the Trans-Pennine Trail, more accessible. “It is so important that people are able to access the countryside, we all need to be able to spend time in green spaces!” Marilyn and the NSCG have worked with lots of other voluntary groups in order to help conserve the green spaces in and around Sheffield. This includes the Friends of Firth Park, the Friends of Walkley Centre and the Wadsley and Loxley Commoners. The NSCG has been instrumental in helping to conserve the Wadsley and Loxley Commons and the Wincobank hill fort. The NSCG do voluntary work every other Saturday whilst Marilyn also volunteers every week at the Wood Lane Countryside

Centre. At the centre she does administration work such as contacting other conservation groups and organising voluntary dates for the NSCG alongside a spot of gardening. As well as running sessions for children, the centre also runs sessions for young people, including young offenders and people who have suffered with drug addiction. “Some of the people who attend the sessions have suffered from mental health problems and coming to the centre is good for them. They get a lot out of it and get to socialise with a group of people who just accept them for who they are. “I’ve learnt a lot about nature through volunteering, like looking for signs of badger trails for example. I just love being outside and going for walks. The NSCG is very social and that’s definitely helped us keep going all these years. All the members are so nice and caring, that’s how the group keeps going really!” For details on how you can help Marilyn and the North Sheffield Conservation Group, head to woodlanecc.org.uk

The store is currently in the process of developing a brand new beauty spa, due to open later in the year, in which Clarins will be one of the many focal brands offering clients a range of both professional body and face treatments. Managing director of Sandersons, Mark Dransfield, had this to say about the stores new addition: “We are incredibly proud as an independent store to have Clarins here at Sandersons, the new area looks fantastic.”

“The wonderful feedback that we have seen in the first month really has exceeded expectations. Like Clarins we are also a family firm and building strong relationships is key to our success.” Commercial director at Clarins Mandy Chamberlain said: “It’s great to be working with the Sandersons team who really understand their customer and we are delighted with how the new area has been received by their Clarins customers. “We are incredibly excited about the new Sandersons spa concept, the plans look amazing and will give us the opportunity to introduce Clarins’ professional treatments in a beautiful and relaxing environment.” foxvalleysheffield.co.uk // clarins.co.uk

Tramlines is back

Hillsborough Park sets the scene for another huge Weekend of music

Tramlines celebrated its 10th birthday last year with an ambitious move to Hillsborough Park, bringing the likes of Noel Gallagher, Stereophonics and Craig David to S6. Despite some rumblings about the decision prior to the festival, it was widely regarded as a huge success. Shortly after the festival, operations director Timm Cleasby said: “Sheffield has never enjoyed a bigger party than the one that took place in Hillsborough Park this weekend. I’d like to thank everybody who came and made it the special event it was. Sheffield’s never had a three-day festival like this before, the support for the event has been amazing and we intend to make Tramlines 2019 even better.” This year, The Courteeners, Chic, Rag’n’Bone Man, The Manics and Miles Kane, plus a shedload of local bands, are heading to Hillsborough Park and honestly, it would be quite remiss of us to launch NorthBound Magazine without a huge, 10-page feature packed with news, interviews and previews, wouldn’t it? Settle down, have a cuppa and hype yourself up for the biggest party in Sheffield...

Into the Trees returnsto Hillsborough Park after a hugely successful firstyear The 11th edition of Tramlines will feature the festival’s biggest family offering yet as the Into The Trees area returns to Hillsborough Park for the second year. The well-received addition boasts will again boast a jam-packed programme featuring a pop-up cinema, woodland workshops, circus skills and inclusive art collectives, and new for 2019 – a mini beach and seaside-themed stalls, kids comedy, magic shows, quirky poetry and animatronic dinosaurs. Joining this year is The Flying Seagull Project, which through a series of weird and wacky shows is set to bring a sparkle of magic to the event. Either sit and watch or get involved with cacophony music sessions, a unicycle runway, pirates and princesses, quick and quirky quiz shows, kids comedy club, magic shows, and an end of day parade – all there to capture the imagination of young festivalgoers. Another new addition to this year’s festival is Jurassic Parties, who bring Sheffield’s one and only animatronic dinosaur ‘Tricksy’ the famous cheeky

T-Rex and the only UK identical replica of Blue, the velociraptor from the Jurassic World films. Also debuting is ‘The Poet’ Jonny Heath who will be inspiring crowds with a selection of creative poems and stories written on his typewriter. Back by popular demand, the Responsible Fishing team will be inviting kids into their woodland workshop to create beautiful transient artworks, inspired by the natural landscape using foraged materials of whatever they can find nearby. This promises to be a relaxing space for visitors to reconnect with nature – with the

Family Fun

After reuniting Sheffield favourites Milburn for the last time (at least for the foreseeable future), frontman Joe Carnall embarked on a brand new solo project, Good Cop Bad Cop, which led to him recording a debut album with old pal Matt Helders in LA. For the opening issue of Northbound, Carnall spoke to Joe Food about breaking away from preconceptions, hanging out in LA and enjoying some creative freedom. When did the Good Cop Bad Cop idea first come to you? I guess even before Milburn got back together I had load of songs, and the idea was to do something with them but as more of a solo thing. I didn’t envisage much of stylised thing to go with it; they were just songs at that point. Then Milburn came along again and it kind of made me go a bit further west, but in a good way, as it pushed me away from making more guitar music. Otherwise it would just have been: “Oh, that guy from Milburn is doing his old music just without the rest of the lads.” How did you set about breaking away from that association? My senses and ambitions have been kind of pushed out further to the margins, so I started thinking about the sounds I could work with that weren’t typical Milburn sounds. I eventually found myself messing around more with synths and keys. It’s a bit like Sheffield music heritage coming full circle; starting with indie guitar-based music than reverting back to synth-led stuff. There have been a few Human League references in reviews of the album, and synth-pop in general has had a massive revival as of late. Were you conscious about any of that?

Yeah, it has. It wasn’t really a conscious thing, no, just more of a process where I wanted to get away from making guitar music and thought what I was doing sounded cool. On the Human League thing, obviously I know a few of their records, as well as Heaven 17 and ABC, but I wouldn’t have said I constantly listened to them. It’s just a happy accident that I’m from Sheffield, but I suppose it felt good to be kind of bringing it back a bit. Of course, you brought your pal Matt Helders of the Arctic Monkeys onboard for production duties. How did that come about? A lot of the songs that ended up on this record I wrote with Matt in mind. I knew he was up for doing it and I knew we’d be recording out in LA, I sent over one tune and he asked me straightaway to come over and record them at his place, so I suppose that entered my mind when writing the other tracks – which probably adds to the kind of retro soundtracklike feel to it. He knew I wanted to try a different way of songwriting and how important that was to me. You later flew out to LA and recorded the record at his house. How was that experience? It was a very liberating and incredibly laidback way to make a record. It was just

Goo B the two of us – so it wasn’t like we had to get four or five people on the same page, planning to meet at certain times amd waiting for others to finish their bit. You walk in and do whatever you want to do at whatever time. We were on no one else’s clock and that was an amazing feeling. You’ve mentioned how even when Milburn got back together there was still a bit of tension at times. Maybe creative tensions, or one of us was hungover, or one was mardy, or whatever else. That just happens when you’re in a band; whereas this is two people, me and Matt, and it’s like: ‘I’m going to do this until basically you tell me to stop.’ I’d do my own thing until he told me it sounded a bit shit, or suggested something else. The working relationship was me getting on with it more than anything else, but he had the power to stop me and

Good Cop Bad Cop that’s living there it wasn’t like being a tourist where you’re ticking things off to do and it feels a bit sterile. But I must say by the fourth week some things about the culture were getting on my nerves – the false sincerity with every interaction. Not that I’m anti-social or trying to lay into a whole population but it’s the culture in LA – everybody wants something from somebody. Could you live out there? I’m not sure I could live there; I just think there are more interesting places to go where you could learn a different language or whatever.

basically serve as my brakes. You do need a radar because external ideas and opinions are always important. What are your thoughts on LA as a place? I don’t know what my thoughts are on America. I’ve been a few times but I really enjoyed it this time, it was my second time in LA. But I think that’s because I was staying with a mate. We did a load of great stuff because when you’re with someone

There is a bit of a soundtrack-y feel to the album, a bit like a glitzy old movie almost. I imagined that was a direct result of the surroundings? Maybe a bit like a Drive-style movie. There were definitely some moments that were so evocative – touching down at dusk and seeing all the neon lights, the pink sunsets and palm trees, I don’t think you can help getting drawn into that.

There’s a bit of a spacey feel to it all. I guess so, and many people have made links to Tranquility Base in that respect. But I just think people put two and two together, with Matt Helders involved and us both being from Sheffield, and predictably drew the comparison. I reckon you could bring out a reggae album and there will still be an Arctic Monkeys comparison from someone. Yeah, that’s just the bane of my life really. But you know, Helders played on the record so it’s going to happen. It was amusing how some people came to gigs expecting him to be on the drums – I think a few actually left! And you purposely chose different venues than the usual for the tour. Was that another way of trying to avoid the Milburn connection? When I was putting it all together, I specifically said to my agent that I didn’t want to – or at least to try not to – play anywhere I have done before. I think when you are trying to shift a preconcep-

tion of yourself or a pre-conceived idea of what your music sounds like, you need to try and manipulate the environment, which therefore influences how people behave – it’s like classical sort of control tactics I suppose. So, I thought I could do it not to be like a traditional guitar band environment, so I asked for theatres and maybe cool places which are a bit more independent, a bit more off the beaten track. For example, in Sheffield we managed to come up with Crookes Working Men’s Club, where there haven’t been too many gigs and as soon as we walked in we thought not many people coming down will have walked into this room before, nobody knows how to behave, and the aesthetic itself is enough to make it a cool night before a note has been played. The result on the tour was that we had seven gigs and only two shouts for Milburn tunes and a large part of the feel to it all was stylistically very different.

What are your plans for the project going forward? I’ve got a handful of festivals this summer, obviously Tramlines, which I can’t wait for, and then there’s another tour in October that will be cool because I’d love to see how people have lived with the album. Sometimes you get favourites from people and they’re often what you don’t like straight away. Other than that, I want to try and get some new music out to coincide with that tour; it’ll be a hell of a task but I’m up for it. Catch Good Cop Bad Cop at Tramlines Festival, Sunday 21 July on the Leadmill Live Stage.

SettlingIn Northbound spoke to head of local and regional PR at Tramlines Alex Deadman in anticipation of the festival’s return to Hillsborough. He talks us through why the move has been beneficial to both event itself and the community north of Sheffield’s centre. This is the second year at Hillsborough Park. How has the festival changed? Last year was a great success. We learnt quite a lot from the move, but it was a lot smoother than in previous years too. It is a better space to go and get lost in and you feel like you are at a big festival. You can forget you’re practically in the centre of a massive city! There is still plenty in town, though. Tramlines are fully onboard with the Fringe, working with city centre businesses and the council. The Fringe is bringing a unity to the city centre, making it more accountable than previous years. It could be confusing for artists previously not knowing whether they were playing the official Tramlines. We are a third party that can link the pubs, bars and businesses and bring them together non-competitively so the whole city can have a great time.

The festival is shining a light on them and on Hillsborough as well. It’s an area that is consistently overlooked. Last year we spent some time with several journalists covering the festival that had never even been to Hillsborough, never mind the park! They were really surprised by it. It’s nice to put a spotlight on the area and community, and not just for the football. Ticket stats show that we have a lot more interest from people in the Hillsborough area/north of Sheffield than in past years. It is close to selling out fully in advance for the first time ever!

“The festival is shining a light on local businesses and Hillsborough, an area that is consistently overlooked.”

What’s the reaction to the move been like on the whole? The people from the local area have welcomed us with open arms… the New Barrack Tavern absolutely loved it, and not just because it brought them more trade!

Anything you’re particularly looking forward to? We are all looking forward to Nile Rodgers & Chic. You tend to hit a sweet spot on Sunday evenings at festivals and you have got to get the music right, which is what I think we have done. It is also an act we have wanted to book for a long time, and one Sarah in particular wanted. So having them there is a really special thing for us.

o The past year has seen Oddity Road take on their own headline tour, playing to a sold-out O2 Academy while supporting The Sherlocks and having their energetic sounds picked up by Radio 1 and BBC Introducing, enabling them to build on their success with latest release ‘Why Am I Like This’ being met with high praise throughout the local music scene and beyond. With just weeks to go before their main stage slot at Tramlines, Northbound caught up with the band’s drummer Ethan Lambert to discuss new material, headlining the Leadmill and why a return to Hillsborough Park could be their best gig to date… You have a big summer of festivals and a string of your own dates. How are you gearing up for the months ahead? We’ve got a rehearsal space in the roof of an engineering works in the Hope Valley so we can go down there regularly and work all night if we want. We’re clocking up the road miles and the more we play and work alongside other bands, the more we learn. It’s not necessarily a conscious thing but you learn stuff that we think makes each gig a little bit better than the last one. Jack [singer] likes to mess about and he’s like a mad wind-up toy so we just turn the key before each gig and point him at the stage. Your latest release 'Why Am I Like This' came out at the start of the year. Have you enjoyed the response you've received? ‘Why Am I Like This’ and the previous single ‘All Again’ kind of saw us start exploring a new Oddity sound - and so far so good! Both songs got played quite a few times on Radio 1 and Radio 6 and loads of other shows. We headlined a gig in Aberdeen a few months ago and it was mad that so many people knew the words to ‘Why Am I…’ and were giving it a good go. We’re really excited about our next few singles and can’t wait to get them out there. Hopefully the next one will be out over the summer.

You guys seem to be out touring almost all year round. Do you enjoy being out on the road? We love it! You have to work hard as it’s the only way to get yourselves heard out there. We have played some gigs and it's honestly been just the sound guy and us, but each time we play a few more people turn up and we hope it keeps going that way for us! I think the only annoying thing we complain about is that the van doesn’t have any heating in the back so we have to take our sleeping bags and old blankets to keep warm. Scotland was freezing on one tour and that was a real test of endurance! What's been the highlight for the band so far? Our big highlight so far has been hearing our songs on Radio 1 on the shows we listen to! Headlining the Leadmill was pretty sick for us all too as we’ve all been to gigs there over the years. This summer's looking mint and playing the main stage at Tramlines, and then one of the big stages at Reading and Leeds, is defo going to be up there! If you could go on tour with anyone who would it be? That’s a seriously hard question, there’s so many class bands out there… I’m going big but I’d love to go on tour with one of the big boys like Foo Fighters, Kings of Leon or Biffy Clyro. Their stage shows are sick! Sheffield has been home to some big names in the music world, so do you tend to look at these for inspiration or do you feel you're already on the right path for big things? I’ve had a big thing for Bring Me The Horizon for the last eight years! We’ve also spent a lot of time with The Sherlocks and they’ve been great with us, giving us loads of advice. Three of us learnt our trade in the same little high school music department as Drenge - they were three or four years above us and had started doing bigger things when they left but they’ve unknowingly been an inspiration for us! Oddity Road play the Main Stage at Tramlines on Saturday 20 July.

Spotlight ON

Sunshine Deli Vegan junk food has only become prevalent in society recently. If, for example, you were enjoying the heady delights of Tramlines Festival five years ago, you would be unlikely to find a specialist vegan kebab shop on the wobbly walk home. Times are changing, however, and you need look no further than Sarah Short and her Sunshine Deli opening on Penistone Road back in March 2018. The homely café is, as the name would suggest, a positive experience no matter what time of day you’re there. Sarah explains why. “When it comes to food I’m very influenced by my Nan. I’ve always been a feeder – I love to make good food for people – and we have a great environment here in the deli. A lot of customers say it’s like sitting in someone’s kitchen! So it’s homely and comforting, which is also how we like our food.” As it goes, Sarah and the Sunshine Deli will be open for Tramlines weekend, serving up those specialist vegan kebabs alongside an outside barbecue. Whether it’s vegan southern fried chicken, vegan fried chicken buckets or a stop-off on the way to the festival itself, the barbie will be on all weekend.

Creative plant-based food in the heart of S6 is what Sunshine Deli does best

Perfect for a stomach-lining lunch before the festival or a plant-based kebab on the way home afterwards, Sunshine Deli is a must-visit spot just yards away from Hillsborough Park. sunshine deli // 989 Penistone Road, Sheffield, S6 2DH // sunshinedelisheffield.com

Thirsty? The deli has just been granted a licence to sell alcohol and have live music on the premises too. The options at the deli vary from the ‘Full Monty’ breakfasts to Yorkshire pudding wraps and pizzas, all vegan and all made with quality produce that Sarah and her partner (who is also named Sarah) like to source locally where possible in order to support other small independents in and around the city. “The menu is quite fluid,” says Sarah, who is still the head cook as well as general manager and multi-tasker, “and it changes seasonally though the specials are weekly so we can mix it up more often.”

Hail to the Ale Keep it small, keep it simple. That’s the ethos of a micropub. No jukebox, often no TVs and probably no Wi-Fi either. A place to enjoy good beer, a decent conversation and, in some cases, tuck into some hearty pub snap. Luckily for you lot, Sheffield is FULL of micro boozers just waiting to be supped in. Due to the finite nature of magazine word counts, we couldn’t possibly fit them all in this here feature. But just to get you started, we’ve picked out a few from North Sheffield and beyond; some for those snug summer evenings and some for those treks into town.

ROUNDHERE

THEMICROPUB The Micropub Association’s definition: "A micropub is a small freehouse which listens to its customers, mainly serves cask ales, promotes conversation, shuns all forms of electronic entertainment and dabbles in traditional pub snacks."

WALKLEY BEER CO.

walkleybeer.co.uk // 362 South Road, S6 3TF The small but perfectly formed micropub in Walkley has a mix of cask and keg on draught, as well as a brilliant selection of bottles which is constantly updated with local beers and ale from around the globe. For those on the go, cask ales are also available to take home in a two-pint carton, or whichever drinking vessel you bring in from home!

NORTHERN MONKEY

facebook.com/Ynorthernmonkey // 8 Middlewood Road, S6 4GY Having recently opened, the second Monkey bar in S6 features a great range of ales, gins, rums and even a small backroom which, we’re told, will be used as a wine and prosecco bar.

YOUR NEXT LOCAL The Nags Head at Loxley and the King & Miller in Deepcar are Bradfield Brewery’s signature boozers, both loved by locals, regulars and visitors to the area alike. It’s only right, then, that both of them feature in our first ‘Your Next Local’ feature where we seek out your new favourite spot for a pint or two… The Nags Head at Loxley - the original Bradfield Brewery tap since it was acquired in 2008 - has recently undergone a significant refurbishment in aid of extending the premises and to give the interior a bit of a spruce up. Being of modest size and capacity, the extension has allowed for increased internal seating and a more spacious area for casual gatherings. Homemade food is served Tuesday to Sunday with the menu offering up traditional pub food including their signature homemade pies which are served with a refreshing pint of one of the Farmers Ales, from just £6.50. A bargain! A cosy beer garden sets the ideal setting for the warmer days, and with popular walking destination the Damflask Reservoir a stone’s throw away, it’s the ideal pit

Bradfield Brewery is offering up a choice of two boozers for your next pub stop

stop after an afternoon of walking. Dogs are more than welcome, too. Back in April 2018, Bradfield Brewery added the King & Miller in Deepcar to its portfolio. Opening after an extensive refurb in October 2018, the Farmers Ales, snooker tables and warm atmosphere have proved to be a massive hit with the locals. Work on the kitchen has just been completed, with food now being served Monday to Saturday (12-8pm) and Sundays (12-5pm). Following in the same fashion as the Nags, the King & Miller will soon complete renovations on the beer garden which is set to be an ideal area for the family and alfresco dining. A further extension to the interior of the pub will be complete by Christmas. On the expansion of the Brewery’s portfolio and continued success for both outlets, Bradfield’s director John Gill said: “Our aim when first starting out as a brewery was to produce traditional real

ales that would stand the test of time and I believe we have succeeded in doing so with our range of Farmers Ales that are increasingly enjoyed by many. “One of the things we consider important to the brewery industry in general is that the traditional pub establishments remain in our society. We have therefore endeavoured to ensure that our pubs continue to offer the traditional pub environment, with contemporary additions to cater for the changing modern society.” The NagsHead // Stacey Bank // S6 6SJ King & Miller// 4-6 Manchester Road // Deepcar //S36 2RD bradfieldbrewery.com

BUSINESS

Hillsborough is going through quite the transformation at the moment. One of the city’s largest suburbs with a population of circa 19,000, it’s always been an area full of life and local businesses entrenched in community values. Tramlines relocated to the S6 area last year and after some sticking points with the locals, had undoubtedly the most successful festival to date in Hillsborough Park with 40,000 people travelling in and out of the area without a hitch. Just opposite the park on Middlewood Road is Brass Monkey – a craft ale and artisan gin bar. Opening back in December 2018, the intimate venue has settled into the area nicely, offering something unique to the community, but respecting its already-established neighbour-

ing businesses and residents. Director Ben Duckenfield tells us the reaction has been surprising. “It’s been fantastic and to be honest, a lot better than we thought. We looked at a few places and decided on this one as we really wanted to be a part of this community.” “It’s been hugely important to us to bed in with the community. We said from the start if there was any big concerns from shops or from neighbours, come and see us and we’ll work something out.” Since opening, Ben and the team at Brass Monkey have had a

Hillsborough’s first micropub has hit it off with the locals since opening at the start of the year helping hand from the now-bar manager Wendy Willis, whose experience has made the transition even easier. “Wendy has been a godsend! She’s helped us out with training and licencing and stuff like that, so it’s nice to have that help. She has been invaluable.” Of course, being right opposite a park which hosts a huge inner-city music festival plus fortnightly games at Hillsborough Stadium isn’t a bad place to be. “We’ve got some big plans for Tramlines this year - we’ll be doing a lot of promotional things for sure. Talking to the organisers, it’s going to be even

busier with more people in the park. We are going to be open all weekend and we’ll have a bottle and can bar out at the front of the bar with music on.” Brass Monkey’s Tuesday night quiz has proven very popular with locals too, as well as its happy hour offering every Friday afternoon (4-7pm). Happy Birthday Fox Valley! Thousandsturn outfor the Fox ValleyFoodand Music Festival Fox Valley celebrated its 3rd birthday in style last month as huge crowds rocked up for the two-day Food and Music Festival. The event was held over the centre’s birthday weekend and for the first year the Fox Valley team partnered up with Valley Music Festival who provided a packed line-up of musical entertainment showcasing local artists and performers. Visitors to the festival enjoyed music and live cooking shows on the main stage, as well as the 60-plus food and drink stalls selling a fabulous line-up of sweet and savoury foods – from cheeses to chocolate, olives and delicious cakes and biscuits. The Greedy Greek Deli and Stone Bridge Pizza stalls went down particularly well, as well as main sponsor Neo Med’s delicious street food.

Quenching the punter’s thirst over the weekend was the Nook Brewhouse, the Gin Cart, the Little Badger Cider Company and Bradfield Brewery. Fox Valley event manager, Kayleigh Marron, said: “The turnout we’ve had for our Food and Music Festival this year has been amazing. The feedback from our visitors and traders has been really great and it’s lovely to see such a positive atmosphere around the centre. “We just want to say a huge thank you to all our traders and sponsors and to everyone who came to the event and helped make it such a success; we’re already planning for next year.”

After the success of Fox Valley’s weekly Friday Market and monthly Farmers’ Market, the centre has announced that it will launch two brand new markets starting this month. 50 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

The new Craft Market is set to launch on July 7 and will take place on the first Sunday of every month following the first Saturday when the Farmers’ Market takes place. The Craft Market will run from 10am–3pm and will be located along the central walkway, near Home Bargains. A new Vegan Market will be launching on Saturday July 27 and will be held on the last Saturday of every month. The Vegan Market will run the same hours and in the same location as the Craft Market and is aimed at supporting local vegan traders or traders who wish to branch out into this area. If you’d like to get involved in the new markets as a trader, email Kayleigh.marron@foxvalleysheffield.co.uk for more information.

The listed building, previously known as the Firwood Cottage, opened its doors to the public after 39 weeks of refurbishment pushing a philosophy of “a new-aged pub with an old-fashioned heart”. Think a cosy, 1930s speakeasy-inspired interior to complement cask ales, live sport, music, craft beer and a spacious and stylish beer garden. The latest step forward has seen street food arriving at the venue, bringing former professional basketball player Olu Babalola off the court and into the kitchen. Olu, who settled in Sheffield after joining the Sheffield Sharks, will be serving up the Blind Monkey’s menu of soul food dishes including burgers, pulled lamb, sandwiches, paninis and desserts and what he claims are “the best wings in the city”. “I’ve been given a lot of creative freedom,” the Wing Kings founder told NorthBound. “I want to keep our menu exciting for everyone; it’s important that to me that the vegetarian and vegan dishes taste just as good and aren’t thrown on as an afterthought. Keep an eye out for Wing Wednesdays, Soul Food Sunday Dinner, Curry of the Week and the upcoming Taco Tuesday and Pizza Night.” Olu is originally from London but picked up his culinary skills whilst studying at Clemson University, South Carolina. He credits a chef known as ‘Mama’, an old lady in her 70s, who may not have said much but became so fond of Olu that she passed to him the ingredients behind her secret seasoning mix for perfect chicken wings, a family recipe which is over 100 years old.

Since its opening in April last year, the Blind Monkey has become a true gem on the Walkley pub scene, harking back to its roots as a traditional pub originally built during the Edwardian era while offering a few modern comforts along the way. The arrival of soulful street food to the Blind Monkey coincides with Don Valley Brewery’s refocusing of their beer range which now has a musical edge to match an indie ethos. The brewery, which has close ties to the venue, will feature heavily on the bar alongside guest ales from local breweries to provide a South Yorkshire compliment to Olu’s South Carolina flavours. For a taste of South Yorkshire soul, the Blind Monkey serves a main menu every Thursday to Saturday, 12-9pm as well as the popular ‘Wing King Wednesday’ between 5-9pm. Keep an eye out for the upcoming Soul Food Sundays, curry of the week, guest wing dips, summer specials as well as beer and food pairing events. the blind monkey// 279 Whitehouse Ln, S6 2WA theblindmonkey.co.uk www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk | 53

WALK WITH US With the Peak District literally on our doorstep, it would be remiss of us to not take advantage of the utterly beautiful walking routes dotted around. So strap on your walking boots and take a walk with us down to Damflask Reservoir.

On the edge of the Peak District, sandwiched between Loxley and Low Bradfield, lies Damflask reservoir. Linked to the nearby Strines, Agden and Dale Dike reservoirs, it was constructed to supply fresh water to the city of Sheffield back in 1896. The name is taken from the village that was washed away in the Great Sheffield Flood of 1864. Damflask Village stood near the site of the current dam wall and had a boozer, corn mill, paper mill, wire mill, blacksmith’s shop and a small amount of houses. Following the flood, the village was never rebuilt and the reservoir was built instead. Whether you’re local to Loxley or Bradfield, or just fancy a hike/drive up to the reservoir, there’s plen-

ty to do once you arrive. The two universities’ rowing clubs are based on the site, alongside the Sheffield Viking Sailing Club whose members, if you’re lucky, you can catch nipping across the water. The woodlands surrounding the reservoir have always been popular with walkers, especially since the owners of the site, Yorkshire Water, opened the site fully to the public in 2002 and revamped their walking paths to be more accessible.

Who says weddings are on the decline? Not us, as our order book includes wedding cakes as far in advance as 2021. Every cake created at The Cake Shop is unique as each design is made by the gold award-winning Cake Artists specifically to the customers’ preferences. From beautiful, traditional wedding cakes to the quirky, personalised birthday cake designs we have done it all and are keen to take on any challenge. Gill has over 43 years experience with Gail, close behind, at 28 and then we have Chlo and Chloe who have around 10 years between them. With assistance from Chris and Carla, when needed, we make a formidable, “won’t let you down”, team.

“I just wanted something nice but “nice” was an understatement. I couldn’t believe the cake that was created for me – it was actually a work of art. I cried when I saw it, I could not have asked for anything better and it tasted fantastic, so moist” AW, May 2013.

Alongside the cake making skills we also have fantastic teaching skills in The Sugar Craft School, next door, lead by Gill and Chris who are both qualified sugar-craft teachers. You could sit in on a 2 hour class and experience a taster of different techniques or you can take a 30 hour class and gain a PME Professional Diploma in each genre of Sugar-paste, Royal Icing or Sugar Flowers, or all 3 if you have 90 hours to spare over the next year or so! Lots of levels of classes in between too. We also have a HUGE stock of supplies for home bakers along with a loyalty scheme making your money go further. A visit to the shop is extremely worthwhile just to see what we do, and even watch us! If you would like a cake making then please give us a call to book a free, no obligation, consultation with Gill.

Testimonial:

The ladies made us the most perfect wedding cake last September, they took time to make sure exactly what we wanted and really captured every little detail on the models they made for us. Our guests absolutely loved it and each layer was so delicious! They also made us some yummy parkin cake favours for the day. Thanks again ladies AP, June 2019

Beautiful cakes made by lovely people... my son and daughter-in-laws wedding cake was stunning and my grandson’s Thomas the Tank cake was a work of art. I would recommend TCS to everyone...definitely 5-star service. JW, Sept 2017

Shifting To Green With apotentialban on petrol anddiesel carspencilledinfor 2040, we take alook atthe prosandcons ofswitching toan electric motor.

76 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

If you commute into the city centre at rush hour, you’ll be familiar with the lengthy queues snaking towards the centre either on Netherthorpe Road (heading up past the university) or the build-up of traffic on Sheaf Street next to the train station. The latter was named as one of the UK’s most polluted streets outside of London and was brought to a standstill one Tuesday morning in March as climate activist group Extinction Rebellion protested to raise awareness of the dangers of air pollution. Ireland and France have recently announced bans on petrol and diesel cars over the next two decades, with India re-

Total ban of petrol and diesel cars portedly to follow suit. Despite its positive effect on the environment, switching from petrol to electric cars isn’t a practical solution for everyone. Sandra Wappelhorst, from the International Council for Clean Transport, told the Guardian: “Most trips are within an electric vehicle’s range, and it is the battery in the electric vehicle that turns out to be the most cost-effective over four years. “But if you’re a country doctor, who might have to respond to emergency calls at odd hours in odd places, you’ll have to evaluate a battery electric car differently to a London surgeon.” In 2018, the sales of new electric cars in the UK rose by 21%. But generally speaking, battery-powered cars can last around 100 miles before they need charging again. Driving from the north of Sheffield (Wharncliffe Side, for example) to the city centre and back shouldn’t be too much of an issue. However, commuting to other cities, as many of us will do, like Nottingham, Manchester and Leeds, you may have to rely upon a charging port at either end to ensure you can complete the journey. And that’s if your workplace even has a charging port. Experts, including the government’s advisory body on the matter, cite this very issue as the main barrier in the total adoption of electric cars in the UK. The infrastructure isn’t there yet, but the gov-

ernment has pledged to ban all sales of petrol and diesel cars by 2040 alongside a tenfold increase of charging points. It remains to be seen whether a tenfold increase will be enough to improve the infrastructure to a workable point, but the promises are there at least. Alongside these improvements are grants from the government itself. If your electric car can travel at least 70 miles with-

If your electric car can travel at least 70 miles without any emissions at all, a grant will pay for 35% of the purchase price out any emissions at all, a grant will pay for 35% of the purchase price or up to a maximum of £3,500. Another benefit, or incentive, is avoiding a congestion charge. Cities like Leeds and Birmingham have approved plans to introduce such a charge, following in the footsteps of capital city London which charges £11.50 per day to enter its low emission zone. Sheffield council has moved on this too. Earlier this year, it was announced that drivers of low-emission vehicles were to be awarded free parking permits. Last month, the council received £500,000

from the government to increase the number of its charging points to 22 across the city. The charging points will be at Pond Hill by the Old Queens Head, Clarence Lane near St Mary’s Gate, Arley Street at Highfield, Eldon Street, Livesey Street at Hillsborough, Prince of Wales Road, Parkers Lane at Broomhill, Howard Street, Ebenezer Street at Shalesmoor, Blyde Road at Fir Vale and Carver Lane. As reported by the Sheffield Star, Sheffield council officers recently said in a report: “Sheffield council has been instructed by the government to develop an air quality plan that will achieve compliance to legal nitrogen dioxide levels in the shortest possible time. “It is widely recognised that taxis, in particular hackney carriages, are significant contributors to declining air quality due to their high level of use and the age of the fleet. Transitioning the city’s taxi fleet to ultra-low emission vehicles will deliver significant air quality benefits and is therefore an important part of the city’s emerging air quality strategy. “In order to support the move to electric vehicles, it is vital that the appropriate charging infrastructure is in place.” What are your thoughts?
