In this issue we’re giving a big NorthBound welcome to the Bradfield Parish Council who, for the next few issues, will be distributing their monthly newsletter via the middle pages of our magazine. This is such exciting news and I’m sure the Parish won’t mind me saying on their behalf that we’re all looking forward to the months ahead and working together. Our meeting with the Parish led us to an interview with Stocksbridge and Penstone’s new MP, Miriam Cates who we spent the morning with. You can read that feature-length interview on page 39. Eslewhere, we spent a morning with Chris Hardy down at the S6 Foodbank. Chris and the volunteers down there are a credit to the local community. In numbers After 13 years of retirement, Barnsley-born Michael Parkinson is back on the road with ‘An Audience With Michael Parkinson’, a touring show in which the legendary TV presenter looks back on a career which spans more than three decades. His Saturday night programme 'Parkinson' was a staple of any British weekend in front of the telly. The first episode aired in 1971 and the subsequent three decades saw interviews with the likes of Muhammed Ali, Marlon Brando and Mel Gibson to name just three of the superstars that sat on the sofa with 'Parky'.

Wisewood’s New Park
New park and playground for Wisewood’s Spider Park People in Wisewood will soon have a new space to play, relax and enjoy the outdoors, as Sheffield city council has approved funding to develop a new park and playground at Spider Park. For the last few years people living in the area have been asking for improvements to the park, on the site of the former Wisewood School, and consultation has previously been carried out to establish the type of play facility that could be provided. The plans from this consultation work will form a starting point for the project and further engagement will take place among local people, to review this important work for the Wisewood community. The new park is the last piece of the jigsaw for leisure opportunities in the Wisewood area, after Wisewood Leisure Centre and the on-site pitches were developed in recent years. Councillor Mary, Sheffield city council’s cabinet member for culture, parks and leisure, said: “I’m thrilled that we can finally progress this project. People in the Wisewood area have been asking for this new park for some time and now we have overcome the hurdles and are off on the final stretch. “This park will serve the whole community, so it’s important that we review and refine the design with local people, because we are determined to get this right.
“We want to create a haven where local people can get outdoors, have fun and enjoy some fresh air and I’m really excited to see how this develops. I’d like to thank local people for their patience and the local councillors who have continued to push for this development on their behalf.” The site for the new park and playground is on the corner of Rural Lane and Laird Road between the Riva Project (community café) and the Wisewood Leisure Centre. The pocket park style site will form an important part of the local area, complementing the existing facilities and services available in the surrounding community, which will bring this development to completion. Work starts on£5m stadium Construction work has started on the £5m Community Stadium at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park. When complete, the 3,900-capacity stadium will provide a permanent home to Sheffield United Women Football Club and Sheffield Eagles Rugby League Football Club. The facility, being developed by Scarborough International Properties Ltd, will be built on the west side of the 3G pitch, which was completed in April 2017 and is also used by UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, Oasis Academy Don Valley and the local community. Former Sports Minister and Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park project lead Richard Caborn welcomed Cllr Mary Lea and Cllr Mazher Iqbal to mark the start of construction, along with representatives from Scarborough International Properties. Caborn said: "This latest development is another major step forward for Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park and a further boost for sport in our city. "We're very excited to see building work getting underway and this is a tangible landmark in realising our vision of delivering a legacy on health and wellbeing through sport."

There’s no confectionary that divides opinion and even creates a hatred nothing short of passionate in some people quite so much as liquorice. But people of Sheffield, I’m afraid you only have yourselves to blame for the huge popularity boom of perhaps the most universally disliked sweet of all time, as the hugely popular liquorice allsorts were created in our fair city! The story goes that just before one of the Bassett’s salesmen was about to pitch some brand new confectionary to some important clients, he dropped the tray, mixed the sweets up, and just improvised his way out of his mistake. Since then, company mascot Bertie has cemented himself in British popular culture, with even 1988 Doctor Who villain Kandyman being partially based on the character. Then, as part of a publicity stunt by the company, Bertie and Betty Bassett were married at the Sheffield factory. How sweet.

'SHEFFIELD Mums Against Cancer' are putting on the glitz as they prepare for their annual fundraising ball in March. The group, headed by Ceri Rodgers and her friends, have raised more than £120,000 for local cancer charities over the last decade. Their seventh annual Big Sparkly Fundraiser will take place on Saturday 21 March at the new OEC venue on Penistone Road, with money raised going to St Luke’s and Weston Park Cancer Charity. The event, which begins at 7pm, will include a four course dinner, raffle, luxury auction, live entertainment, DJ and dancing until late. “We are very excited about this year’s event as this will be one of the first opportunities for people to attend a charity dinner at the OEC,” said Ceri.
“We are confident that this new destination will add even more to the success of this hugely popular event.” Senior fundraising manager at St Luke’s Megan Senior said: “We are so grateful for SMAC’S unwavering support. “Since they first established the group they have donated well over £60,000 specifically to St Luke’s and more funds to other local causes. “The difference they make to St Luke’s is transformational and Ceri and her tireless group of friends are an outstanding example of fundraising at its finest.” Tickets cost £450 per table of ten and can be booked by emailing sheffieldmumsagainstcancer@outlook.com or calling 07590 814086.

TheCharity Cup returns to Hillsboroughnext month Sheffield Wednesday’s annual Charity Cup is back in 2020 and once again, will be raising money for St Luke’s Hospice. The Charity Cup is the unique sporting challenge that raises money for St Luke’s and the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme, whilst giving people the opportunity to play at an iconic football stadium in Hillsborough. Kicking off on Saturday 28 March, two Sheffield Wednesday teams, both home and away sides, will battle it out to win the prestigious Charity Cup. And to take part and play for Wednesday – alongside some special sporting guest stars and celebrity players - all players have to do is raise a minimum of £500 per person.

NEWFACILITYFOR SHEFFCHILDREN’S A new £1m state-of-the-art facility has opened in Sheffield Children’s Hospital, complete with innovative and interactive artwork. Sheffield Children’s Hospital’s newly developed Safeguarding Support Unit opened to patients in December after 18 months of building work. The new space has been funded entirely by The Children’s Hospital Charity. The service which has been at Sheffield Children’s since 2013, is now in its brand-new space, complete with bigger rooms, specialist artwork and unique space for play. The unit is funded by NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group, South Yorkshire Police and crime commissioner Dr Alan Billings and NHS England. The Children’s Hospital Charity has refreshed the unit thanks to funds from community and corporate sponsors, including Westfield Health. The new digital installations are complemented by colourful artwork which takes pride of place on the windows, flooring and ceiling in the new unit. Each piece has been made to appeal to all ages whilst simultaneously softening the space, so it feels less clinical. Dr Anna Ramsbottom, consultant paediatrician and designated
doctor for Safeguarding, said: “The artworks and furnishings have been specifically chosen to appeal to all age groups, abilities, cultures and genders, to not exclude anyone in need of care and support. Our beautiful new unit supports our message that you are valued and welcome here. “We have some fantastic interactive panels commissioned by Artfelt that will keep our visitors entertained, calm and distracted when necessary so they can fully engage with the assessments required. We want children to be able to return to us as and when required for their ongoing care, with no fear or anxiety. “Thank you to NHS England, the Police and Crime Commissioner’s office and NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group, as well as the Children’s Hospital Charity and sponsors including Artfelt for making this happen.” To find out more, visit www.tchc.org.uk/appeal
£500,000 has been awarded by Historic England towards the second phase of the redevelopment of Park Hill in Sheffield. The funding is for structural repairs to parts of the concrete frame, some of which is crumbling. John Paul Walker, from Historic England, said: “After years of decline and neglect, this housing estate is once more becoming a symbol of Sheffield’s pride, innovation and ambition. “Phase one has given Park Hill a new lease of life and restored its reputation. We hope phase two will continue this rejuvenation.” Developers Urban Splash started work at the site in 2007, with 260 new homes built in phase one of the project. Shannon Maclaughlan, Urban Splash, said: “Park Hill is known worldwide for its Brutalist structure and signature concrete, so this support from Historic England is invaluable.”
The iconic listed building has overlooked Sheffield since it was opened in the early 1960s, eventually falling into disrepair in the 1980s and 90s. It has been used in popular culture a number of times since, including the set for numurous scenes from This Is England, the set for the video of Arctic Monkeys’ ‘View From The Afternoon’ and the 2019 acclaimed musical written by Chris Bush ‘Standing at the Sky’s Edge’, the soundtrack of which was written by Richard Hawley. Work on the second phase of the project is due to be completed by June 2021.

Dave Allemby Dave has spent four decades raising money for charity, and 2020 is set to be his most challenging year yet… 63-year-old Dave Allemby has spent over 40 years clocking up the miles to raise money for good causes, running more than 66,000 miles since New Year’s Day in 1979. The Barnsley native took part in the first-ever London Marathon in 1981 and has ran in over 1,850 races ranging from 100m to 40 miles. With a change of pace in his day job, Dave has worked as a produce assistant on the fruit and vegetable counter at Tesco Barnsley for the last 23 years, where he is affectionately known locally as “the legend”. His latest challenge is to run six half marathons in six months for Sheffield Children’s Hospital, to mark both his sixth decade and support his store’s £6,000 fundraising target for The Children’s Hospital Charity.
Dave said of the challenge: “Being a small part of the team raising funds for Sheffield Children’s Hospital will keep me motivated throughout the dark winter months. “I have arthritis in my knees so my training is quite limited these days, but I’m managing to run two or three times a week. will be in the same situation and at roughly the same level of fitness. “Park runs are also great fun. 5km routes held on Saturday mornings throughout the country. There’s no pressure, no entry fee and it’s a great target to finish one for a beginner. You can join thousands of people getting out there, taking part and having fun.” Dave has set a fundraising target of £200 for his challenge, which will help transform the cancer and leukaemia ward at the Sheffield Children’s Hospital. On a grim Tuesday morning in mid-January, amongst the swirling wind and rain from Storm Brendan, we meet Chris Hardy – manager of the S6 Foodbank at St Thomas’ Church on Gilpin Street, just off of Penistone Road. He’s marching back and forth from the stock room across the road from the food bank centre, arranging signs and readying his volunteers for the first of two food drives this week. It’s hammering it down and he’s wearing a t-shirt, but still has more than enough time to welcome us warmly to the food bank just as it opens. In November of last year, the Trussell Trust released its ‘State of Hunger’ report which estimated that in 2018-19, at least three million food parcels were given out to people in need. More than half a million were given to children. The charity, which looks after 1,200 foodbank centres across the country, released figures which stated 36% of people who need emergency food parcels cite insufficient benefits payments. Whilst 18% cite a delay in the payment of benefits and 16% say a sudden change in benefits leaves them with no money for food to feed themselves and their families. This isn’t right. This is a national problem and quite frankly, a disgrace. The UK’s economy, which is currently the sixth largest in the world, has shrank and withered and re-grown following two and a half years of political uncertainty, the result of which appears to have had an adverse effect on those who need the benefits system and food banks to survive. People like Chris Hardy, who manages the S6 Foodbank along with some 80 plus volunteers, offer a safety net for those who are neglected and left behind by the current system. “It’s not as though they’ve got money in the bank or family to rely on. The real problem is not having that safety net around you and that’s what this food bank is and what it’s there for,” Chris tells us. “We’re here just to give a crisis amount of food. The benefits system is a struggle at times,
especially for the people we help. It works perfectly for 80% of people, but the 20% it doesn’t, it’s a long time that it doesn’t work for them. People say it’s about five weeks but the reality is it’s more like eight weeks and to go two months without any food in your cupboard and without any money in your pocket is a real problem and a real struggle for people.”
“to go two months without any food in your cupboard and without any money in your pocket is a real problem and a real struggle for people.” Chris works with 142 front-line agencies who make a decision on whether a person is in need of an emergency food bank voucher and where they can collect their food parcel from. “We’ve got this site here on Gilpin Street, we’ve got another site on Hannover Way, one in Crookes and one in Winn Gardens as well. It’s S6 and the surrounding areas. The important thing is they can come and sit at a table, have a chat and have a tea or coffee. “A lot of people we see are quite isolated and don’t tend to talk to people. We have a chat with them whilst we’re packing their food for them. We don’t have any food parcels pre-packed; it’s all about their dignity. We try to make the food parcels fit their diets and needs. Some people, if they aren’t from this country, don’t like certain foods so we try to make it fit their diet as best we can.”

That’s a huge amount of humans who are simply being failed by the current system in place. “The really important thing is we’re trying to get them out of their situation and we listen to what’s going on in their life so we can work out where to direct them in the local area,” Chris adds. “It’s really important that together, we’re working as a community. We’ve got around 80 volunteers that come and help out every week which is really, really amazing. They come week in, week out for free, just because they want to help the person who lives next door to them. It’s really fantastic.” The official line from the government is denial that its policies and behaviour don’t contribute to the need for foodbanks.

The Trussell Trust was founded in 1997 by Carol and Paddy Henderson based on a legacy left by Carol’s mother, Betty Trussell. The charity’s initial projects focussed on improving conditions for the 60 plus children sleeping at Central Railway Station in Bulgaria. In 2000, Paddy received a call from a mother in Salisbury in the UK about her children who were going to bed starving that evening. Paddy studied data on poverty in the UK and found that huge numbers of people faced going hungry as a result of a sudden crisis. Paddy started Salisbury Foodbank in his garden shed, providing three days of emergency food to local people in crisis. The charity’s network has grown ever since, and now offers additional support to help tackle the root causes that sweep people into poverty and build people’s resilience so they are less likely to need a food bank in the future and avoid such crises. “Crisis is interesting because when we first started we were doing three days and three vouchers,” Chris tells us. “But now our average voucher per person is just under five because of the length of time people have to wait to see the services they need to. The longevity of people’s needs has just grown and grown. I don’t see any value in stopping someone’s vouchers after three weeks of coming to see us because we want to see them through to the end of their problem or whatever it is going on in their life. “That’s why we’ve got the hub services here. We’ve got Shelter, life skills, job club, because you want people to be integrated back into the community. That’s my big thing, community. “Community helping community is my big aim. That gets harder when we go

“We spend £96bn a year on welfare and 95% of payments for Universal Credit are made in full and on time,” a spokesperson said to the Guardian recently. It’s a response that resolves all responsibility for itself, leaving the very people it’s meant to be looking after to fend for themselves. Chief executive of the Trussell Trust Emma Revie said following the 2019 General Election: “We must start putting money back into the pockets of people who most need support, by ending the five week wait for Universal Credit, ensuring benefit payments cover the cost of living and investing in local emergency support for people in crisis. “It’s in our power as a country to end the need for food banks. But if we’re to get there, we need our new government to act. We’re ready to share evidence from our network of food banks across the UK, and we’d encourage any new MPs to speak to their local food bank about why people are being referred for emergency food. It’s not right that anyone should have to turn to charity for the basics – this can change.” Whilst we chat to Chris on the door of the S6 Foodbank on Gilpin Street, he warmly greets people from all walks of life into the centre. There are young women with prams, older people on their own sat at the tables and people making use of the free coffee facilities. You wouldn’t think this was a centre for crisis, but Chris and his team of volunteers have made it a welcoming community and a place to come where the vulnerable need not feel neglected, intimidated and ashamed. It’s a nice atmosphere. People are talking and laughing. It’s busy. “We’re always busy. It’s been a mild January – when temperatures drop down, we get even busier. Over Christmas we had 17 tonnes which works out to 41,000 meals, which is great and it sounds like there’s a lot of food but the reality is that won’t get us through to February. It is amazing don’t get me wrong, the people in this area and the businesses who’ve donated are amazing and they donate constantly, but the need goes up 17% The amount of food parcels every year so we have to meet that need somehow. OUGHTIBRIDGE’S INDUSTRIAL PAST How a rural hamlet with five families became a hotbed of industrial production

The origins of Oughtibridge go back as far as the 12th century when a ford existed in the area over the River Don. The ford, a shallow spot in a river which allows people to walk or drive across, was managed by a local fella called Oughtred. In the 1100s, a bridge was built on the spot which Oughtred had tended to regularly and became known as Oughty’s Bridge – Oughtred’s nickname to the locals. The small settlement of people in the area adopted the same name following the building of the bridge. The settlement of Oughtibridge gradually grew mainly due to the local farming communities. The first documented mention of Oughtibridge occurred in 1161, when Oughtred’s son, Ralph, signed an agreement for the grazing rights of Ecclesfield Priory just a few miles to the east of the hamlet. The document included the word Ughtinabrigg, which meant Oughtred’s Bridge in Middle English, a form of the English language spoken after the Norman conquest of 1066 until the late 15th century. Ecclesfield Priory’s grazing rights included Beeley Wood (bottom right), a woodland set between Oughtibridge and Middlewood where the monks of the Priory were given permission to graze their flock every year from January to Easter. The ancient woodland still exists today on the outskirts of the village.

To the east of the settlement, Oughtibridge Hall, was built on the high ground in the 16th century and still stands today as a Grade IIlisted building. By the 18th century, Oughtibridge remained a rural settlement with only five families making up the area. Towards the end of the 18th century though, the population rose due to the Industrial Revolution and farming growth. Its location was perfect for industrial activity due to the hamlet being able to utilise the water power of the River Don to drive machinery. By the 1800s, the population had risen to more than 1000 with Oughtibridge forge becoming the main industry in the village. The forge still stands today and is a Grade II-listed building having been renovated and turned into several apartments within a new housing development. The forge was in use alongside a corn mill, paper mill, tannery and a small brewery by the name of Strout’s Brewery, which used to own the Travellers Rest on Langestt Road South. The pub still remains, and still has the old Strout’s Brewery engraving on the windows to the front of the pub. Towards the end of the 1800s, business was booming for the village of Oughtibridge. The population was heading towards the 2,000 mark and its own Oughty Bridge railway station was opened on the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester railway line. The building for the station was constructed using gritstone and remains a Grade II-listed building. When the station was still in use, the goods sidings were used for transporting freight to and from the

Oughtibridge Silica Firebrick works. It was converted into a house in 2008. The Oughtibridge Silica Firebrick Company, which had ganister (fine-grained sandstone) mines in nearby Beeley Wood, utilised the railway for transportation, building a factory by the railway line near the station. The works were taken over by the Steetley company in 1947 which then closed the in the 1980s with half the site being used for housing whilst the other half was taken over by Intermet Refractory Products. The Dixon family purchased the paper mill to the northwest of the area in the late 1800s, turning it into a very successful business. It was one of the first companies to use wood pulp (imported from Oulu Finland) to produce paper instead of rags. The mill also specialised in tissues, making the Dixcel brand. The factory had several owners after the Dixons sold the mill in the 1970s, most famously British Tissues, Jamont UK and The Fort James before it closed in 2015. The following year, a planning application was granted for up to 320 homes to be built on the site. In the present day, the village of Oughtibridge continues to grow. A 2011 Cencus stated the population of Oughtibridge had risen to 3,500, with 80% of folks in the area owning the house they live in. Its position near the M1, transport links to Sheffield city centre and sense of community has seen it become one of the more desirable villages in the north of Sheffield.

Since the summer of 2015, Sheffieldborn Miriam Cates has represented the Oughtibridge ward for the Bradfield Parish Council. She stood as the Conservative candidate in Stannington in the 2018 local council elections, missing out to the Lib Dem’s Vickie Priestley. A year later, following a campaign which saw the prime minster and the home secretary visit Stocksbridge on the campaign trail, Miriam was elected as the Conservative MP for Stocksbridge and Penistone, despite a couple of negative headlines (published somewhat unfairly, it must be said) days before the voting opened. As we enthusiastically welcomed the Bradfield Parish newsletter to NorthBound Magazine this month, we got the opportunity to spend the morning with Miriam at the place where her political journey began. How have your first weeks as MP been? A baptism of fire? Absolutely! It’s a really interesting job because I’ve been put there by constituents who voted for me. I’m not really employed by anyone and MPs don’t actually have a contract which, when you’re trying to rent a flat, is quite difficult! At the same time, it’s a team game. I’ve been elected on a Conservative manifesto to deliver manifesto pledges so it’s obviously my duty to vote for the government’s agenda and also answer every constituent that gets in touch with me. The most important part of the job is to be a really good MP for them. And you’ve just been down to London for your first PMQs… There are lots of different aspects of the role, and it’s really exciting and an incredible privilege, but it’s also very tough getting set up. That’s something I hadn’t anticipated. When you are first elected you have no office in Westminster and no office in your constituency, no staff and a phone number but no phone! From day one you’re getting emails from constituents, charities, and lobby groups – at the moment I’m still playing catch up. I still don’t have an office in Westminster! There are 107 new conservative MPs, and there must be 50 odd other new MPs, so it’s like a house moving chain with 150 people in! The other day we were told to collect our post but I was like ‘where can I put it?!’ - I’m carrying it around in a rucksack! But all the existing MPs are so helpful. I’ve been hot-desking in the Dorset MP’s office so that has been amazing.
What is Westminster like then? The palace of Westminster is amazing – you just get lost all the time. I’ve learnt one way from A to B and I daren’t deviate! [laughs]. There are doormen and police everywhere who can help and fortunately as a member you can go anywhere. When you sit in the chamber and think about the history that has gone before, it is an immense privilege. I’ve always been interested in politics. I was never party political, I became an independent Parish councillor and there’s where it all started really. You’re one of the few people that’ve made the jump from a Parish councillor to MP… I stood for Stannington in the 2018 local council elections and tripled the Conservative vote, but still only came third. It’s a different level of government but the basic skills and job description of helping people and signposting people, getting involved in local issues, getting your head around complex planning issues is the same. In Westminster you actually have a lot more help because you have a budget to employ staff whereas a Parish councillor, you’ve got to get it done yourself anyway you can. You’ve spent years as a Parish councillor, how has that helped with the role? Becoming a Parish councillor got me interested in how the different levels of government work together. For example, there’s currently an on-going issue of road safety in Oughtibridge. There’s a one way system and there’s a road called Bridge Hill that has a very dangerous right turn. Now, as the Parish council and as local people we are very aware of this. But traffic controllers Highways are not in the remit of Parish council so we have to go through to Sheffield city council and say ‘can you do something about this junction?’ They are the ones with the budget and the remit, so it’s working out who is responsible for what. A lot of emails I’m getting from constituents are about planning issues but as an MP, I have no power or authority over planning, that’s all devolved to local council. I guess it’s about having that conversation with the relevant people isn’t it? People still want their MP to get involved but I’ve got to do that by working with the local authority and not against them. Having an understanding of how that works as a Parish councillor has been so helpful and I know a lot of my colleagues are still councillors on borough councils and city councils and those skills are

invaluable. Last week I met with Stuart Barton who is the district commander chief superintendent for Sheffield for an informal chat to find out what I can do to help him and what he can do to help me. Building relationships like that will be key and if my constituents have an issue, I know who to go to. Local steel maker Liberty Steel in Stocksbridge recently announced it was cutting 250 jobs. Is this something you’ll be dealing with as MP for the area? Yes I had a chat with Andrea Leadsom (secretary of state for business, energy and industrial strategy) and Nadhim Zahawi (parliamentary under secretary of state for industry) to go through the situation. They’ve offered a meeting with the specialist team in the business department and with Liberty Steel to see what can be done. I had a really good meeting with UK Steel too, which is the body that represents the steel industry, and they went through in great detail what they see as the future for steel in the UK and what the government can do to help. There are many parts of the steel industry that are profitable. It’s not just some old industry; it’s hi-tech and endlessly recyclable. There’s a clear role for steel in the future but there are conditions in the UK that they think need to be changed to make it more competitive. I’ll be talking to Liberty Steel next. It’s a huge part of the history of the area too… They’ve just announced 250 job cuts which is devastating for the community. They’re trying to achieve many of those with voluntary redundancies and they’re part of a wider group (GFG Alliance) so they’re hoping some people will be able to join them. It’s certainly not set in stone who is losing their job but they think they need to cut the jobs to stay profitable at Stocksbridge. Long term, I think the steel industry is vital to the UK and not just this area. It is part of our heritage and our history and there’s a good reason for that - it has to be part of our future. These are jobs that are high skill and high wage and I think if we’re clever we can attract other industries around the steel. Is that your hope moving forward? That the steel industry can expand? With the towns fund in Stocksbridge, one of the aspects of that fund is to look at what our industrial USP is going forward. Steel is a key part of that, but can we attract tech industries? Can we attract training? With better infrastructure, can we link employees with different parts of the steel industry elsewhere in the

region? I’m going to do everything I can to make sure there is a future in Stocksbridge for steel. It’s not just another job, steel is something that people are proud of and have been, rightly, for decades. A big part of my job is to be a champion for local industry and local jobs and that’s what I’m hoping to do. In terms of local issues, what are you hoping to achieve? You could probably put it all under the ‘levelling up’ agenda that the prime minister has talked about. We do have a North – South divide, there’s absolutely no doubt about that. It’s something like three times the amount, per head, is spent on travel per individual in London than it is in Yorkshire. Our economy isn’t balanced and it’s massively focussed on London and the South East. If you think about the things we need to do better in this area: infrastructure, more high paid jobs, better training, they all fit in that theme of us being left behind in the North. Why do you think that is? Successive governments have failed to replace the productive industries that declined in the 60s onwards with other meaningful jobs and we need to do something about that. One of the things that successive governments based in London have misunderstood is that social mobility is a really important thing. It shouldn’t mean having to leave your family, community and home to get a good job or training, those things should be available here. That’s what I’m really passionate about. Rural crime is the other thing. You get forgotten about if you leave on the edge of a city or a town, and that’s the case on the Barnsley side and on the Sheffield side, particularly around Stocksbridge. During the campaign (home secretary) Priti Patel came up and we had a round table with farmers and other people living rurally and their descriptions of some of the crimes they’ve witnessed and been victim to is horrendous. Some people are living in fear because they feel isolated and that’s one of the things I spoke to the district commander yesterday and something I’ll be working on. Whilst those communities are small and isolated, they still matter. And your aims for the country on national scale? Am I allowed to say ‘Get Brexit Done’? [laughs] I’m really excited about this parliament. We have a large majority which means we can be bold with our agenda. We know we’ve got four and half years to see things through. We’ve all been elected on a very unifying manifesto which means the sense of team has been restored. It’s a real watershed moment in history, the whole Brexit debate was toxic but in a way, it needed to happen because there has been a disconnect for decades now in Westminster, or London, and the rest of the UK. There’s been a resetting that actually, regional voices do matter. That’s what this government is about. Not all power, control and policy making should come from London.

There was a story in the press just before the General Election that the company you and your husband run were making money from food banks. We’ve also spoken to Chris from the S6 Foodbank in this issue, who dismissed it straight away, and I wanted to get your side of the story. One of the positives that came from all of the horrendous lying and trolling about that, is that actually, lots of food banks have got in touch and wanted to be a part of it ever since. Food banks do a phenomenal job and we mustn’t underestimate what the volunteers actually do. When people are in crisis, to come across a human being who cares for you, who doesn’t just supply you with emergency food but can signpost you to other agencies that can help is really important. Of course we
shouldn’t have any food poverty in the UK but at the moment there is a role for those food banks and we shouldn’t politicise them and actually the people running them, like Chris from the S6 Foodbank, have often given up their careers and time to serve people in a tough situation. As we increase the minimum wage and invest more in the economy, we of course want to see an end to food poverty.
go into politics? Is that not actually quite a good way into it? Some people say you should ignore trolls and in some cases that is true. But constituents need to know that they can trust me, and they’re going to come to me over the next four and a half years. I need to show that I’ve got the best interests of the community at heart and to set the record straight felt like the right thing to do after the story broke.
What are you reading at the moment? The book that’s most influenced me in the last few years is Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. It’s a study of people who’ve been phenomenally successful, like Bill Gates for example. We’ve got this misconception in this country that it’s all about talent and actually it’s probably 10% talent and 90% hard work, and luck! Like what year you happened to be born in and what was available to you at the time. I found that very influential to look at.
So away from politics, where are you at your happiest? I’m an extreme extrovert so I love spending time with people I’ve never met before! I also love reading. I can lose myself in a book.
The issue was that food banks were charged to use the business’ services, but it turned out to be a one-off charge and was a lot less than other fees applied to charities in the UK. The deeper issue with this is that charities don’t get things for free. The businesses that provide them with those services need to pay their staff. If you go on Oxfam’s
all-singing and dancing website, that probably cost something in the region of six figures. That doesn’t mean that someone’s ‘made a profit from charity’, it means someone is running a business that is contributing to the economy, paying its staff and its taxes. Charities don’t get electricity for free. Businesses like ours, of course we want to charge the minimum we can but if a business goes bankrupt and can’t pay its staff, that’s not good either. It’s about the balance and sadly, the people that wrote those stories and those headlines, I don’t believe they have any interest in reducing poverty, they just want to make headlines. It was certainly a baptism of fire just two days before the General Election… It certainly was. One minute you’re a volunteer in your local community and as soon as you become a politician you become evil! Do we not want people who’ve been Parish councillors and volunteers to

Welcome A belated Happy New Year to you all, its 2020, where did last year go? They say if you keep busy, time flies, but they also say as you get a little more mature the years just fly by too, something to do with mathematical division – both are very true in my case. The lead up to Christmas is always a busy time for us all, many churches, organisations, groups, bands all have seasonal activities, and we are always pleased to attend these Parish activities both at Christmas and throughout the year. I went along to the Brightholmlee Christmas Tree Festival in December, a charitable festival which has been running for five years which sees spectacular illuminated displays designed by local groups and businesses filling the chapel. The charities benefiting in 2019 being Hands Together Barnsley, Friends of Sheffield Children’s Hospital and The Yorkshire Air Ambulance. December also brought, along with the incessant rain, a General Election. On behalf of Bradfield Parish Council I would like to congratulate Councillor Miriam Cates who has sat on Bradfield Parish Council as Councillor for Oughtibridge for the past 5 years and was elected as MP for Stocksbridge and Penistone in December. Miriam has always been proactive and her valuable input into council business has always been very welcome. We send all best wishes to Miriam for her new career and are delighted to have confirmed with Miriam she will be continuing in her role as a Parish Councillor. As you are probably aware, the Parish Council have included their newsletters within a local magazine for some time, this was found to be the most efficient way of distributing our news out to our parishioners. We have decided to try
incorporating our newsletter within this new Northbound Magazine to see how the new look, size and distribution goes down. Feedback would be welcomed. In the last newsletter I indicated that our website and offices had been spruced up. Both of these were underrated. In August I went to visit Filey Town Hall. I was very impressed by both their archives, which incidentally has as a listed published author on many of their pamphlets a Mr Dan Eaton, Mr Eaton being a teacher at Loxley School within our Parish. Inside the Filey Town Hall there is a comprehensive photographic record of each of their previous Chairmen, this I have tried to partially replicate at Bradfield, but only going back 10 years as the records of our meetings and names of the Council Chairmen go back to 1894. Now the past 10 years of Bradfield Parish Council Chairmens photos hang along the walls of the staircase of our offices. We also revamped the website. We designed another section called 'Of Interest' and inserted photos between the text of other sections to break the pages up a little. When I am able, I join the Wharncliffe Community meetings. Back in the middle of last year’s summer I was present when the trustees at the meeting were discussing the Community Centre. The discussions intrigued me as they were discussing how the present Centre had been presented to the Wharncliffe community in a trust deed by Sheffield City Council. Back then the gift was a redundant HORSA Hut no longer required by the school. After the
gift of the Hut, a board of trustees were appointed, comprehensive fundraising strategies started and gradually over many years the HORSA Hut was rebuilt, extended and redesigned to evolve into what is now the Community Centre. I looked into other HORSA Huts within school boundaries within the Parish, most had been demolished but Loxley School have maintained and re-roofed their Hut and is still in use. To start 2020’s ‘Items of Interest’, over the page you will find a short article about the HORSA Hut.

Kaye Meadows Allotments Oughtibridge WORDS: E Hewett The allotment site in Oughtibridge was built in August 2008 after a group of locals petitioned Bradfield Parish Council for land. It was created in a small field called Kaye Meadow (after a local Major Kaye) at the far end of Sensicall Park, tucked away behind Church Street. When we first arrived on this field it was very steep and extremely wet – with water often coming over your wellies, so after the bulldozer had levelled it up a bit one of the first jobs was drainage. One huge channel was dug from top to bottom of the site (known as the Grand Canyon) and various other pipes and channels have been added over the years so that it is generally dry underfoot and mostly well-behaved. It was also covered in nettles and brambles which we had to get rid of before the very exciting job of laying out the plots could begin. The great day arrived and our temporary surveyor set up his plan
on a workmate bench in the middle of the mud and directed operations. Twenty-one 10m by 10m plots were created using string and pegs and as soon as each was allocated to the next person on the list, work began! The site is much more sophisticated nowadays. We don't have a corporation water supply but collect water from the original land drain and send it along a system of barrels and hoses down throughout the site. When this dries up, as it does most summers (especially in 2018 which was a record hot year), there is an ingenious system of solar panels which pumps water from a sump at the bottom of the site (which is always soggy) up to the top barrel to cascade down again. Here you must be alert for tadpoles getting stuck in the pipes. Most of the work on site is carried out by the tenants in a series of workdays which take place throughout the year and now we have
robust pathways, an excellent communal compost system and a corner known as 'Dingly Dell' – for relaxing and taking teabreaks under the shelter of the trees. The top of the site is managed as a wild-flower meadow in that it is mown each autumn and the cuttings are removed to keep the fertility low so that the grass does not out-compete everything else. Unfortunately the main winner here is the hogweed which flourishes in this area and causes burns and stings when it is cut and the sap released. We have tried every method available to us (being an organic site) to get rid of it but it bounces back every year looking healthier and happier. As does our wildlife! We have plenty of squirrels, rabbits, mice and pigeons ready to share our crops and have quite frequently seen the badger making his rounds and choosing the strawberries for his breakfast.

Although we pay rent to our landlords (Bradfield Parish Council) they repay us with generous grants of money so that over the years we have had lots of wood to line our paths, hedge plants to line our perimeter, a lovely new gate and timber to build the compost bins. We also have the help of the excellent Steel Valley Project, whose volunteers mow the meadow for us and have repaired one of our drystone walls. Our latest enterprise is an exciting one with the arrival of several hundred more bodies on site. We have acquired a bee-hive, three suits, all the equipment and lots of bees. They don't cause any trouble at all and are quite fascinating to watch. We are all waiting anxiously to see if they make it through the winter when we might be expanding our empire to another hive or two. This is now the start of our twelfth season. Six of the original tenants are still on site and quite a few newcomers have joined us for a season or two or much longer, while our waiting list is always full. And while allotmenting can often be hard work, rainy and disappointing, there is no better food for the soul than to be sat amongst the sunflowers on your very own plot watching the buzzards circle above; your own crops to eat in one hand and a nice cup of tea in the other.

Hutton operation for the Raising of the school-leaving Age The UK government’s Education Act of 1944 supported the expansion of education to raise the compulsory education age to 15 and one extra year's schooling for all. This act resulted in the need to accommodate an extra 168,000 pupils with extra classroom provision for each school. The government answered the problem by designing a concrete, timber and corrugated
roof flat pack delivered to 7000 schools called the HORSA Hut. These flat packs were erected within the school boundaries to accommodate the extra school year. Originally intended to last approx. 10 years as a temporary solution, with modifications and renovations, some are still being used today. Within the Bradfield Parish Council there are six schools. The HORSA Hut existed on each

site, most being demolished during school modernisations over the years. There was recently one at Oughtibridge School but this was demolished during the extensive extensions. Loxley School still has its HORSA Hut, having been extensively refurbished and re-roofed. It is still used today as a joint nursery and after school club on a daily basis. Wharncliffe Side School donated its own Horsa Hut to the community by a trustee deed. The trustees rebuilt and extended the Hut into an unrecognisable building which is now the Wharncliffe Side Community Centre. Steve Buckley, one of the trustees, remembers the original HORSA Hut from 1955 when he first moved into the village. The unrecognisable Hut at Wharncliffe Side and Loxley’s Hut are the last remains of the HORSA Huts from the 1940s in Bradfield Parish.

For the majority of the UK, ‘Parkinson’ was a staple of Saturday night television. It was a time-honored tradition in the household, right from its first run in the 70s on the BBC and its final years on ITV. The final episode in December 2007, which featured an ensemble cast of interviewees like Peter Kay, Billy Connolly and David Attenborough, was watched by more than eight million people as Sir Michael Parkinson bid farewell to an illustrious broadcast career. Described by the Guardian as ‘ the great British talkshow host’, son of a miner ‘Parky’ was born and bred in the village of Cudworth in Barnsley, just 20 miles north of Sheffield. He worked for various local newspapers before working for the Manchester Guardian and the Daily Express. Sir Michael’s career really got going in the 60s, as he worked on various current affairs programmes for the BBC and Granada Television, keeping his broad Yorkshire accent amongst the Received Pronunciation (or BBC English, as others call it) of other television broadcasters. The first episode of ‘Parkinson’ aired in 1971 and the subsequent three decades saw Sir Michael interview the likes of Muhammed Ali, Marlon Brando and Mel Gibson in a glittering career. Though, it wasn’t all plain sailing for Parky as any journalist will tell you. A 1999 interview with director Woody Allen almost went awry after the line of questioning turned to his battle for custody of his children. Parky gently changed the subject, with the openness and grace that he was famed for as a journalist. There was the 1975 chat with Dame Helen Mirren, too. The actress was dismissive of the personal questions from Parkinson and later said the 70s was a “perilous” period for women, to which, in a 2019 interview with Piers Morgan, Sir Michael agreed. After 13 years of retirement, Sir Michael is back on the road with his son and long-term producer Mike to celebrate a wonderful career spanning three decades. We thought we’d spin the dictaphone around on Parky himself, and get a quick preview on what we can expect from the shows. You are hosting ‘An Audience With Sir Michael Parkinson’ at the Crucible Theatre on 10 February. What can we expect from the show? Well actually, I’m co –hosting! The show is myself in conversation with son and long-term producer Mike who takes me through my life and career with the help
of some classic clips from the ‘Parkinson’ archive. It’s the story of how I made it out of a pit village to the top of those famous stairs with all the highs and lows along the way in the company of Connolly, Ali, Lauren Bacall, Sir David Attenborough, Joan Rivers, Sir Michael Caine, Madonna and Dame Edna Everage to name just a few! It’s a great show which I love doing and If I wasn’t on stage, I’d definitely buy a ticket! In your opinion, what should be the role of a journalist? I’ve never found a better description than the original mission statement of the BBC: ‘To inform, educate and entertain.’ Looking back over your incredible career, is there any interview that stands out as your best or favourite interview? You know, it isn’t one you would expect me to say. It was with the renowned scientist professor Jacob Bronowski. He was the writer and presenter of the landmark book and television series ‘The Ascent of Man’. It was the one time that the shape and progression of the interview went exactly the way I had prepared. But that was more to do with professor Bronowski’s perfect command of the English language and his forensic mind, and then my interviewing skills!

Once, when they were still with us, I sat down with Alan Whicker and David Frost, both of whom I liked and deeply admired, and we agreed to write down on a piece of the paper the worst interviewee we had all interviewed. We then showed each other at the same time. Each of us had written down Thor Heyerdahl, the Norweigan anthropologist most famous for the Kon-Tiki expedition (a 1947 journey by raft across the Pacific Ocean from South America to the Polynesian islands) in the Pacific. We all agreed he would not be our first choice as a crewmate on a deep sea cruise!
You’re known to be into your music, too. Give us your favourite… There’s too many to mention! ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin’ by Cole Porter, sung by Frank Sinatra with the arrangement by Nelson Riddle. ‘Summertime’ by George and Ira Gershwin, sung peerlessly by Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. Finally ‘Love for Sale’, again by Cole Porter, played as an instrumental by the Buddy Rich Big Band. They are my top three. What’s the proudest moment of your career? Being awarded an honorary membership of the Musicians Union. Music has given me such joy in my life and my respect for anyone with musical talent knows no bounds. To be accepted into their inner circle without an ounce of musical talent is a real honour! It’s been a while since you were on our TV. What do you make of the current state of British television? Slick, brilliantly produced and full of talent! Sadly I often find it soulless and derivative. I was lucky to come into television when I did. Any advice for up and coming broadcasters, interviewers and journalists today? It’s difficult to do so because the media environment they are coming into is not one I recognise nor, to be honest, understand. The only piece of advice I can give any aspiring interviewer is do your homework and listen! The Blue Ball at Wharncliffe’s recent renovation has impressed the locals If you take Langsett Road North out of Oughtibridge and follow the River Don alongside it, you’ll reach the Blue Ball at Wharncliffe in just a few minutes. It certainly has a modern feel when you step inside of it, but there’s still that dash of tradition with the separate taproom in the back and its pub grub menu – which is to die for, many a NorthBound reader have told us. The pub has been under the management of Dave Briggs and, judging by his track record, is in safe hands. “I’ve had this place around three years,” Dave tell us. “Overall though I’ve been in the game 22 years from when I was 18 years old working at Ward’s brewery.” Dave used to run the Wharncliffe Arms down the road too, so he knows how to run a boozer in these parts. “We were approached by the brewery (Thwaites) to take this on, so we ripped it up and gave it a new look.” The refurbishment wasn’t recent, but you wouldn’t be able to tell by the look of it. The food menu at the Blue Ball is extensive. Pick from your traditional dishes (Cumberland sausage,
stilton chicken and cottage pie), homemade pies (steak and ale or meat and potato) or burgers (Swiss, blue or vegetable). Not fancy those hearty dishes? That’s fine, pick from the baked potato, grill or fish menu. Nothing take your fancy? There’s a further pasta menu, as well as a sandwich menu and a range of salads to choose from. You only have to look at the Blue Ball at Wharncliffe’s Facebook page to see why the food here is renowned. The last two reviews left on the page? ‘Gorgeous food’ and ‘food is brilliant, prices are brilliant too’. The latter point being true, too. Grill menu aside, there isn’t a main dish here that reaches over £10. Even then, the mega mixed grill comes in at below £15. Not that he’s likely to mention it, but manager Dave Briggs has just overcome cancer – we think that’s a great excuse to head to the Blue Ball at Wharncliffe and celebrate by making it your next local!

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
This recipe is taken from the new Henderson’s Relish Cook Book and is the pick of legendary local artist Joe Scarborough.
Yorkshire Puddings andGravy preparation time: 30 minutes Cooking time: 1 hour makes: 8 large or 16 small puddings For the puddings Sunflower oil 140g plain flour 4 eggs 200ml milk For the onion gravy 2 onions, sliced 1 tbsp vegetable oil 1 tbsp sugar 1 tbsp tomato purée 1 tbsp Henderson’s Relish 1 tbsp gravy browning or soy sauce 250ml beef or vegetable stock 150ml dark ale or beer
For the puddings Preheat the oven to 230°c (fan 210°c) and pour a little sunflower oil evenly into two fourhole Yorkshire pudding tins, or two twelve-hole non-stick muffin tins. Place the tins in the oven to heat through for 10 to 15 minutes. To make the batter, put the plain flour into a bowl and beat in the eggs until smooth. Gradually add the milk and continue beating until the mixture is completely free from lumps. Season the batter with salt and pepper then pour it into a jug. Remove the hot tins from the oven. Carefully and evenly pour the batter into the holes. Place the tins straight back in the oven and leave undisturbed for 20 to 25 minutes until the puddings have puffed up and browned evenly. Serve immediately. For the onion gravy Fry the onions in the oil until soft and slightly golden around the edges. Add the sugar and tomato purée, cook through, then add the Henderson’s, gravy browning or soy sauce, stock and ale. Bring to boil then reduce the heat and simmer for 25 minutes. The gravy should be slightly thick but not gloopy.

Hendo’s is a great example of this: something we all share in ‘our native village’ which is what I call Sheffield. Talk about one and you’ll talk about the other: Hendo’s is Sheffield. When you give something a nickname and it sticks, that’s affection, and it should be savoured just like a bottle of the good stuff. Through the myths, facts and figures of our national identities, 50 Things About Us, the latest live show from comedian and lifetime political activist Mark Thomas, seeks to explain how we’ve ended up with such a hopelessly cracked and divided United Kingdom. When did you decide you wanted to be a comedian? Was there a ‘lightbulb moment’ at all? I was 16 and talking to a friend and I just said: 'I’m going to become a comedian.' Not so much a lightbulb moment, more of a gobby spasm. Growing up, what was the trigger for your political awakening? Punk rock was the big thing, especially a band called Crass. The Clash were and indeed still are magnificent but buying a Crass album was like getting into an argument. Then Rock Against Racism, the movement, was hugely politicising for me. Then the miners’ strike in 1984. I was at college in Yorkshire and suddenly people who lived in the village were getting arrested and fitted up while the state tried to starve the miners into submission. Your latest show 50 Things About Us explores the history of Britain in an effort to understand how we’ve become the nation we are today. Can you take us through the research process? Basically just reading and arguing. Did any of your findings shock you? YEAH! One of the big things for me was that I went to a south London primary school that was linked with a church called Holy Trinity in Clapham. It is known as the church that William Wilberforce worshipped in and as a kid we were taught how great he was and that we were all part of a history that stemmed from abolitionists. No one seemed to mention that the
man who became an MP so he could get compensation for slave owners and the man who ran the West India Docks also worshipped in the same church. His name was George Hubert and he was an absolute bastard. No one seemed to mention the Haitian uprising and the effect that had on slavery, or the writings and campaigns of black anti-slavery activists in the UK. As far as we were concerned, we were on the good side, the white side that sought to abolish slavery. I think what has shocked me is how ingrained this is. Have you reflected on what 'Britishness' means for you? Identity is a moveable feast that changes all the time. Personally, I identify as South London and always have. I think regional identity is perhaps more important than national when so much of our nation is entwined in a Disney empire vision of itself. In the wake of Brexit and its ensuing fallout, why do you feel is it important to examine our past? Our past always informs who we might be. In your opinion, is there a glimmer of hope on the imminent horizon? Or are we effectively screwed? Both! Mark Thomas brings 50 Things About Us to Sheffield City Hall on 1 March. Manhood is all about the fact that Rosenthal was circumcised as a baby and has suffered from psychological distress about this ever since he first realised what had been done to him. He quips that he is doing the show to "avenge the theft of his foreskin". Rosenthal has turned his issues into a thoroughly entertaining stand-up show with the help of graphs, statistics, playful jokes and rigid research. He has a Jewish background, but he was not brought up to be Jewish and that was not the reason for the circumcision and there was a lot of anger towards his parents when he was younger. Tom explains: “Maybe I'm stuck in adolescence. I don't know. As soon as I found out what happened to me, I was just constantly searching for a reason that made sense of it and I've still not found one. That's sort of the driving force of the show – going through all the justifications for it being allowed.” He does want to make the point that he is not actually anti-circumcision. “If you want to choose to do it when you're old enough, go right ahead. It's like any other kind of body modification, like a tattoo or a piercing. To do it to a child against their will when they cannot take the decision to take that back, it feels as if it’s against our human rights. I want prospective parents to watch my show. Have a nice night out. Laugh with the boy from the sitcoms with the big nose, but also go away thinking ‘maybe that’s not cool actually’. I've always wanted to tour,” he explains. “The nicest thing about it is getting to meet the people who actually watch the TV programmes I'm in. I'm also really proud of Manhood. It's a show that I always wanted to make. It has a dual purpose for me.”
“Obviously, I wanted to put on the funniest show that I can. But I also want fans to go away thinking about stuff which most people don't really think about. It's something that I think is slightly askew with our culture. I should add that this is not your typical comedy show. Most comedy shows will not be an hour about genital cutting practices!” Rosenthal premiered Manhood at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival last summer to wide acclaim and did some national dates in autumn 2019. Although he finds live performance hard, he is looking forward to hitting the road. “I’m really a mollycoddled actor. It has surprised me how tiring live comedy is. Some of my friends seem to be able to walk onstage and just be themselves whereas I'm always nervous. I have the utmost respect for all comedians. I guess by comparison an actor's life is quite easy."

He has just finished filming the next series of Friday Night Dinner. His voice is croaky from the long days on set and he pulls up a trouser leg to reveal fresh cuts and bruises. “I had to wear shin pads to protect me where the other characters were kicking me. I think Tamsin (Greig, who plays his mother) was wearing high heels and kicked me in the wrong place. So actually, for my shins, acting is much harder than stand-up.”
The tour marks a new phase in his career. Although he started out as a stand-up, becoming joint winner of the Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year Award in 2011 after graduating from London University with a philosophy degree, acting has taken up most of his time in recent years. “I was reluctant to call myself a comedian despite the fact that I did stand-up. I felt like until you've done a tour, you can't call yourself a comedian. So, one semi-benefit of doing Manhood is that now I'm a little bit more comfortable saying I'm a comedian as I’ve gone to towns, people have paid money to see me and I definitely heard some of them laugh.” While the subject matter is personal, Rosenthal thinks that the feelings of alienation he talks about are universal. “I’ve had quite a lot of teenagers coming and I think the story of someone who is at odds with their body is something they can relate to. What makes it interesting though also makes it quite odd. The fact that you are watching a guy talk about his penis quite a lot." We certainly learn a lot about Rosenthal in his distinctively hilarious show. But for those that know him from television who is he really more like, Marcus or Jonny? “I probably feel I’m more Marcus. He's a neurotic schemer who thinks that he's smarter than he is. Whereas Jonny is a sort of teenage boy prankster. Ultimately though, if you combine the two that's my whole terrible personality!" Highways England is also planning to extend the smart motorways network as well as to build more emergency refuse areas (ERAs) - designed to offer a ‘safe haven’ for stranded vehicles.
2. EU DRIVING PERMITS Government guidance warns that we may need an international driving permit (IDP) in the near future, in order to legally drive whilst abroad. We currently do not need one, but if the UK leaves the EU without a deal, and it’s entirely possible that this will happen, an IDP will be necessary in order to drive in countries like France and Germany.
3. PARKING TICKET GRACE PERIOD The UK government, as part of a new ‘code of practice’, announced that a new grace period for parking tickets is currently being considered by the British Standards Institution. If introduced, this would bring private parking facilities in line with those run by councils in England, which introduced a 10 minute grace period back in 2015.

RECENTLY QUALIFIED DRIVERS The department for transport announced in 2019 that graduated driving licences were “being explored further,� including a possible nighttime ban for newly qualified drivers. A change in policy could mean that recently qualified drivers could face a new range of restrictions, alongside tougher penalties.
5. INTELLIGENT SPEED ASSIST Intelligent speed assist (ISA) systems are to be fitted to cars in the UK from 2020. This technology involves cameras which observe road signs and limit the speed of the vehicle.
