Welcome to the August edition of NorthBound Magazine. With lockdown restrictions easing and the level of infection lowering in Yorkshire (and fingers crossed it stays that way), let’s hope that his right here paragraph is the last we’ll be mentioning it. Everyone, from all walks of life have put a proper shift in to keep safe whilst supporting your local independent businesses, summed up nicely by this quote from our friend Emma Shepherd from the Blue Ball Inn in Worrall: “We are overwhelmed with support we have had from our local community. Especially following the guidelines and being responsible. We would also like to thank our team who have risen to a difficult challenge. We hope that the guidelines will be relaxed as we approach autumn...watch this space.” Our cover feature for this issue is the incedibly talented Andrew Vickers, also known as Stoneface Creative. You’ll have no doubt seen his sculptures around North Sheffield, and even more impressive is his outdoor woodland gallery up at Storrs Wood. breaking bread New family-run bakery set for Fox Valley A new family-run bakery is set to open at Fox Valley in North Sheffield later this summer. The owners of Bridge Bakery, Greg and Mandy Christofi, also own the Old Bridge Bakery in Holmfirth and are regular traders at Fox Valley’s Friday Market and the monthly Farmers’ Market. Bridge Bakery will sell a range of homemade artisan breads and hot savoury pastries ideal for lunchtime, as well as gelato, healthy juices and Mediterranean desserts. To celebrate the opening of their new business, Bridge Bakery are giving 10% off their entire menu for their first month of opening. The Bridge Bakery will take over the former Dunkin’ Donuts unit located next to Pontis Italian Kitchen and Zorro Lounge, by Fox Valleys popular fountain area. The Christofi family will not be reopening their restaurant at Fox Valley – Neomed - instead they have decided to strengthen the bakery side of their businesses, building on the
success of their bakery in Holmfirth and 26 years of expertise. Taking flight Doncaster Sheffield Airport to resume flights from 1st August Doncaster Sheffield Airport is getting passengers back in the air following the publication of the Depart for Transport (DfT) safe travel destinations released last month and the relaxation of FCO restrictions on non-essential travel. The Government announced that 14-day quarantine rules on inbound passenger travel will be relaxed from 10th July. (Editor note - with the exemption of Spain at time of writing). Chris Harcombe, aviation development director, Doncaster Sheffield Airport, said: “We welcome the news as it is critically important to the start of recovery for the aviation industry. Our first post-lockdown flight took off on Wednesday and the latest announcement means that more passengers can look forward to getting away for a long-awaited summer break.” The comprehensive safe travel list issued by the Government includes the majority of destinations served by Doncaster Sheffield Airport and its two main operators Wizz Air and
TUI. These include popular holiday destinations such as Kos and Rhodes in Greece, Cyprus and Turkey, with TUI flights recommence from 1st August. Mr Harcombe continued: “This is the news we have been waiting for so our passengers can get their summer holidays off to a great start. We have remained operational throughout the Coronavirus pandemic, with our runway remaining fully operational for our freight operations moving perishable goods and PPE. “The safety and well-being of customers and colleagues is the number one priority at Doncaster Sheffield Airport. Passengers will see our enhanced safety measures within the terminal building include social distancing, the use of safety screens, hand sanitiser stations and an enhanced cleaning program. Some destinations, such as Portugal, Romania and Latvia are still affected and long-haul expected to take off at the end of the year. flydsa.co.uk

Cresswell Crags
Not just a fun day out with the family, Cresswell Crags is home (or was home, rather) to the earliest known civilisation in Sheffield. That's right, just a few years ago (12,800 years, to be exact), in the Upper Paleolithic era, men and women roamed the caves, looking for Yorkshire Tea and a pint of bitter to sort thisens aaht. They actually left a ton of rock art within the caves at the Crags, which shows that since day one, we've always been an artistic bunch. As an official Site of Special Scientific Interest and with it being touted as a potential World Heritage Site, it has been retained in such a way that there is an on-site cafe and museum which offers supervised cave walks where you can see the cave art for yourself. The museum has been closed for obvious reasons but will be reopening this month - head over to creswell-crags.org.uk for more information.

SIV has rebranded as the Sheffield City Trust The not-for-profit organisation Sheffield nternational Venues, which looks after 17 venues across the city, including Sheffield City Hall, FlyDSA Arena and Ponds Forge has undergone a huge rebrand as the Sheffield City Trust. Andrew Snelling, chief executive of Sheffield City Trust, said: “At a time when the public want maximum trust in the business and organisations that are central to their lives, we want to reaffirm our commitment to the people of Sheffield. “To increase awareness of our charitable status and roots in this great city, we will solely be using the name Sheffield City Trust across our venues and in everything we do.
“Those facilities that can reopen may look a little different as we have to ensure the safety of our customers to make our sites covid secure, but although things look a little different, we’re still the same charity at heart. “As ever, the safety of our colleagues, customers and the broader community remains our number one priority, and we will not open any of our facilities until we are confident that they are safe.” With the coronavirus pandemic still causing huge issues for the live music scene, Sheffield City Trust is promising a safety-first approach to events in the future – whenever that may be. What we love about our twin cities Anshan is located in the north east of China - a major industrial zone where the city is described as the ‘capital of iron and steel. No surprises then, to see the city twinned up with our own mecca of steel production. Based in the region, the Anshan Iron and Steel Group, one of the biggest steel producers in China and are ranked seventh in the world by production volume. A fair bit more than our lot! Whilst Sheffield has a population of half a million, Anshan’s total is a huge 3.6 million - seven times the size of the Steel City. Anshan is also responsible for one third of the world’s supply of talcum, a quarter of the world’s reserves of magnesite and has produced the largest ever jade stone on record. Quite a prosperous zone in terms of industry.
In 2000, the park was the spearhead for the Anshan authorities’ rebrand of the city, which had built up a reputation of a smog-filled, industrial town with little else to offer. The Anshan Iron and Steel Group changed its three major production lines from mould-casting to continuous casting, resulting in a significant reduction of pollution in the city. The city is also famous for producing Nanguo pears - a special type of pear which is nicknamed the ‘queen of pears’ due to its taste of wine. Due to the sensitivity of the fruit, the Nanguo pear isn’t exported very much and is considered quite a rare fruit in China - especially in the southern regions. Summers in Anshan certainly differ from Sheffield, with humid and monsoon-like summers. However, the winters are very long and cold - just like Oughtibridge.

Like Sheffield, Anshan is home to a large National Park. The Qianshan National Park, translated as the thousand mountains park, is filled with both Buddhist and Taoist temples and is one of the very few areas in China where those religions share
the same site. Within the park stands the largest image of Maitreya Buddha in the world. The park has stood for decades, with 10,000 of Qianshan’s pine trees estimated to have lived there for over 100 years.

Now open, but with a safety-first protocol in place, Fox Valley’s director, Humma Khalid, tells us about the instore changes to expect, how she and the team kept busy over lockdown, and why it’s really important for us to get our eye tests booked in after 100 days of lockdown. We’re delighted to be back open for our customers in the region. Although Specsavers was open for essential care and emergencies throughout lockdown, it definitely wasn’t the same without being able to welcome in the smiling faces of our regulars for a catch-up and a chat. As things start getting back to normal, we understand you might be feeling a bit nervous about coming into store again. But with all the working from home and excessive screen-time, its certain 100+ days of lockdown will have taken something of a toll on our eyesights recently. We’re
particularly concerned about potentially dangerous issues such as glaucoma or retinal issues which may have gone undiagnosed, which is why it’s great to get people back into store. We’ve made some changes to our normal practices to make sure our stores are as safe as possible for the return of our customers and staff alike. If you need a sight test you’ll be able to book appointments as normal, but we’ll give you a call back to make sure you’re getting the right help – whether that’s in store with us, or talking to us remotely using our brand new RemoteCare. After each person we see in our test rooms, we are thoroughly disinfecting the room and all the testing equipment used during the eye test, ready for the next appointment.
We’re also going to avoid using cash, so if you can, please pay by card or electronic payment instead.
And, if you buy a new pair of glasses after your eye test, ask us about home delivery. There’s no need to come back in store, and you can get them direct to your door.

Regular readers of NorthBound will have noticed Paces School, the specialist centre in High Green, featured in last month’s magazine as we featured Captain Tobias’ amazing fundraising efforts. At the time of writing, he’s raised more than £147,000 for his school and for Sheff Children’s Hospital. Tobias is just one of the many success stories from Paces, with friends Lennie and Jack from the school raising thousands of pounds through their own efforts. Clearly, Paces is a centre of inspiration, let alone one of the country’s leading centres for Conductive Education – a Hungarian method which the school’s ethos is founded upon. “We are a specialist centre, school and charity, supporting children and adults with conditions such as cerebral palsy, MS, Parkinson’s, stroke and brain injury,” the school’s head of fundraising Julie Booth explains. “We’ve got a few different areas here but first of all we’re a school, so we offer special needs education for children from age 4 to 18, but as well as this we offer something called Conductive Education. Everyone always asks what that is but basically it’s a physical intervention where we can teach children to do things like sitting up, standing, walking, eating, self-care and to to promote independence. The work we do can make a huge difference to the lives of the children and adults who we support.” Despite being a well-known method in the UK, Conductive Education is still misunderstood, mainly due to the lack of published research on the technique. Since the late 1980s, CE has been available in the UK and has held the same mission statement since the start: no matter your starting point, you can always learn and develop your potential. This chimes nicely with Paces’ own beliefs, Julie tells us. “Our motto is that we focus on ability, not disability. We look at what the children can do, rather than what they can’t do.” Conductive Education was developed by the Hungarian child neurologist Andras Petö and, as per the study onconductiveeducation.org.uk (full article here: tinyurl. com/conductiveeducation), focusses on task-oriented learning, rhythmic speaking or singing, integration of manual abilities into the context of activities of daily life and child-oriented group settings to facilitate psycho-social learning to increase the level of participation.

“We also have an adult day centre,” Julie continues. “In our day centre they teach life skills. Things like cooking, baking, arts and crafts and sewing. We also do the same method of Conductive Education which keeps them moving. We also have Adult Sessional programme for people who have suffered a stroke, have MS or Parkinson’s or brain injury and it’s through Conductive Education that we reteach the skills that they have lost through their illness. “We’ve got in-reach for 0-4 year olds who are experiencing delays in their physical development. For example doctors might say your child will never walk but in some cases we can teach them to sit up and eventually get them walking. It’s all about promoting independence.” At the moment, Paces’ big ambitions aren’t exactly matched by its surroundings. The building in High Green isn’t the most pleasant environments for a learning centre, hence the launch of a campaign to move into a multi-million pound new centre earlier this year. “The place we’re in at the moment is falling to
bits, we’ve got leaky roofs and all sorts, so we launched a capital appeal to raise £3.5m towards building a brand new centre which will just be off Sheffield Parkway where the Advanced Manufacturing Park is at Catcliffe. “It’s a prime spot with lots of businesses and residents with the new housing estate and it’s a great area for us. We’re raising money for that in a number of ways like corporate partnerships, people out in the community cycling and running doing all sorts of different events to raise cash.” This is where the three boys mentioned previously, Jack, Lennie and Captain Tobias, have come in. Collectively they have raised over £150,000 for Paces and Sheff Children’s and have received lots of publicity in the process. Lennie and Tobias have been on ITV, BBC and local publications, with Lennie recently receiving a Tweet of encouragement from Leeds United’s owner after his rendition of Marching On Together on his piano. “We’ve got Jack who is making wooden candle holders and clocks and has set a target of £2000 which he has already smashed which is absolutely incredible. www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk | 27

“It just goes to show that these children want this new centre just as much as we do and that’s the reason we’re doing it.” When Paces successfully moves into its new centre for Conductive Education, the school will be looking to integrate into the local community too. “Years ago centres for children with disabilities were sort of hidden down dirt tracks. We want to integrate our children and adults into the Waverley/ Catcliffe community as much as we can. We’ll have a fabulous sports hall and hydrotherapy pool and people can rent these spaces out for their own community groups and clubs. We’re trying to give something back to the community.” If you’re a corporate business, or work for a corporate business, who wants to strike up a partnership and become part of the legacy of Paces, the school is offering sponsorship opportunities like, for example, sponsoring an area of the new building and having their name on a plaque so, when it’s still there in 100 years it’ll still have their sponsorship on the classroom. Welcome There are a few glimpses of light, a few possible chances of resuming potentially near normal activity. A small inch by inch opening of activity across the community infrastructure. As the lockdown is slowly eased, people are gradually starting to see more freedom and normality. Very gradually, within the Parish, our parks, roundabouts and swings are opening, schools are accommodating more pupils, pubs and restaurants are starting to open their doors - all be it while maintaining some social distancing measures. The churches are working towards actual rather than virtual activities. Slowly, life is starting to come back to a semblance of normality. Back in the March issue of our newsletter within the Northbound Magazine, before lockdown, I mentioned that Loxley School had one of Bradfield Parish Council’s brickbuilt bus stops outside its gate, which looked a little shabby. The school suggested decorating the bus stop with murals, tying it into the rural charms of the Loxley Valley. Headed by Tasmin Torrington, Teaching Assistant at Loxley, various designs were submitted to the Parish Council for approval. The council enthusiastically approved the project and Loxley School began to plan its implementation of the Bus Stop Project. Over the page you can see the result of a major redesign of this prosaic shelter, taking it into an artistic creation. On Friday 3rd July I attended the school, talking with Tasmin and the Headmaster James Connolly just as the final touches were being applied to the mural. Whilst there, three separate people came over to us at the bus stop and all applauded the regenerated shelter as inspirational. The following week, the header banner was fixed and photos were taken to 'officially'
open the bus stop. We put a short piece and a few photos on Facebook, it went viral!! We have already received a request from another school that wishes to create their own designs on one of our nearby bus stops – it’s going to mushroom, we will have murals on bus stops throughout the Parish. What trail blazers! We are particularly lucky in this Parish to have such a wealth of Listed and Heritage buildings scattered throughout our many villages and hamlets. Stannington has a rich historical past and with it a huge amount of such buildings. One prominent building being Knowle Top Chapel, built 1877, which has been at the heart of the community for over 130 years. The chapel and hall are used extensively by various groups in the area. One of these groups, who use the hall for storage and for rehearsals, has informed us that unfortunately it will cease as a congregational church and the land and buildings will be sold within the next two years. It will be sadly missed as such a wellused community building always bustling with activity. It is this same heritage and history within the Bradfield Parish area that alerted me to touching upon some of this rich past by detailing our old trades and crafts. I asked our archivist Malcolm Nunn and fellow councillor with an interest in industrial history and archaeology Nigel Clark to start this, and over the page you will read articles from both. It is my intention to expand on this rich past over following issues of our Newsletter. These 'items of interest' are the history of this beautiful Parish, of its people and trades. Finally I would like to say a few words about a fellow councillor. When I first came to Bradfield Parish as a new councillor, I
was greeted warmly and welcomed into the council not as a newcomer but as a member. There were many councillors who had worked ceaselessly for the benefit of our Parishioners for many years, Peter & Mavis Butler being two. Peter has been very active in Stannington over the years, helping community groups and involving himself in Stannington activities. He was a fountain of knowledge and help for all, a previous Chairman of the Council 2005 /2006 and Chair of committees many times. Peter suffered a stroke in March and is still recuperating. We wish him a steady and consistent recovery and send our best wishes to Peter & Mavis at this time. Stay safe.

File Cutting in Wharncliffe Side The villages and hamlets that make up Bradfield Civil Parish all had local industrial occupations. With regard to Wharncliffe Side most people think of paper making at Spring Grove Mill by the Dixon Family. But before their purchase of Spring Grove in 1871, there were other trades, now virtually forgotten, in particular file cutting. Most of the workshops used by the rural metal trades have now disappeared, but in Wharncliffe Side two remain. That the trade was common was confirmed by The Filesmiths Arms in Oughtibridge, but another public house was more directly involved in the trade. Travelling from Wharncliffe Side to Oughtibridge by the side of Tinker Brook there is a derelict off-shot on the end of the row of cottages built square on to Main Road. It may not look much, but in industrial archaeological terms it is a 'building of regional significance'. Probably the last File Shop in the area. Behind the classic style of workshop window can be seen the remains of two hearths and a file smiths' stiddy, (anvil), a solid stone block with a steel square inlaid, on two sides are grooves cut into the stone by the leather stirrups used to keep the file blank still while the cutter used hammer and chisel to cut the teeth. Please note: The workshop is on private land, there is no access to it. The workshop and adjacent cottages are not on the first Ordnance Survey map of our area, (Yorkshire 288 surveyed 1850/1, Published 1855), but must have been built soon after.
Across the road from the workshop at right angles was the Travellers Inn, now a private house, and just down the road The Wharncliffe Arms, now owned by Bradfield Brewery. This building was originally a row of cottages, one of which was a beer house kept by W, Grayson in 1833. In 1842 an application was made by the then landlord Charles Sanderson, file and spindle manufacturer, to sell 'exciseable liquors', (spirits). It is unclear whether this succeeded, but in 1844 a full licence was obtained. Four years later a description of the Arms (as seen in the image below) appeared in a sale notice. Apart from the necessary rooms for the business note the FileSmith’s Shop, an integral part of the business, it would seem that the Arms was at the centre of the local file trade for the next thirty years or so. In 1852 the licence transfers to Joseph Senior, labourer, from Sanderson, but by 1854 John Downing appears as landlord. By 1861 also at the Arms is his son in law Aaron Micklethwaite, ten years later described as publican and file cutter. In 1857 fourteen men were working two workshops at the Arms. In the picture above (right) you can see filled in windows of one of these workshops. In the 1881 Census Micklethwaite is described as Innkeeper, suggesting the Arms has gone “up market”, though also living there are John Micklethwaite (18) File Cutter and George Micklethwaite (15) Paper Makers Helper. Some point after this the file trade loses a direct connection to the Arms. In 1891 Elizabeth
Micklethwaite is described as Licensed Victualler, her son John as Inn Waiter. There were other workshops as well, two small cottages at Hill Top had workshops attached. At Kemp Spout there was a File Shop still in use in the early years of the Twentieth Century. In Usher Wood, a “hafting shop”, making handles. There were also cutlers’ shops, possibly also making files. There are references to a cutler at Slack Fields Farm, and at Black Ashop, on Slack Fields Lane “bastard files”, (a coarse cut of file), as well as knives were made. On Damasel Lane was a two storey cutler’s shop with a workshop above a stable. The Traveller’s also had a link to these trades, several of the Lingard family are described as spring knife cutler’s and publicans. So Wharncliffe Side was a busy place! The corn mill just below the Arms was fed from the river, below it was Spring Grove Wheel, a grinding wheel with nine heavy troughs and in a chamber above four light troughs, enough to meet the needs of file smiths and cutlers. Below that from 1834 a paper mill, waiting for the Dixon’s to make a success of the business. The file trade was loosely organised, but probably John Bedford’s Forge at Oughtibridge supplied the steel bar at the start of the process, the type of files required, and the marketing of the finished product would be controlled by Bedford’s. Please note: This is work in progress. Some of the information here comes from the Parish Archives, some from the Census, some from Postal Directories and word of mouth. If anyone has information about the location of workshops or anything in their family histories to add to this please let us know.

Old Trades & Crafts In The Bradfield Area In the early days the areas around Bradfield were mainly farming and agricultural where sheep and cattle grazed the lands and associated work such as carpenters and wheelwrights began to appear. Cruck Barns were built, it is thought that there are more of these buildings in South Yorkshire than anywhere else in the country and the biggest percentage of those are in the Bradfield area, there are also a small number of Cruck framed houses To supplement their income, like today, the farmers diversified and had secondary jobs such as stone quarrying, stone walling, house and farm buildings and wooden fencing around their lands. Smaller trades soon appeared such as nail-making, file-making, cutlery-making, these again were mainly secondary occupations done from a shed or a room on their premises. The Workhouse at High Bradfield indentured young children out to Masters to learn a trade so that they were not incumbent on the ratepayers of the Parish – there is a file-cutters anvil (Stiddy as

they were locally known) on Towngate, High Bradfield which came out of the Workhouse cottages when they were renovated a number of years ago. Most villages had a blacksmith and farrier who was able to make up most requirements for local needs, there were also tailors, boot and shoemakers, cordwainers, besom makers also weavers although not as prolific as the West Yorkhire towns and villages, there were also corn and flour millers and quite a number of farms brewed beer on their premises and were known as beer or ale houses before being an inn in their own right. Larger workings occurred in mills near to the rivers where steel processing took place as these were able to harness the power of the rivers. Quite a number were in business before the Industrial Revolution producing shear-blades, scythe-blades, forgings and steel rolling, paper making and anvil making.
In the hillsides particularly around the Loxley Valley, gannister mining took place, this is a hard type of rock discovered by Henry Bessemer in early/mid Victorian times and revolutionised the steel industry in Sheffield and beyond. When ground down it was used to line the steel furnaces as it could withstand high temperatures, the gannister seams were found only in the area from South Yorkshire up to the Calderdale area There was no coal industry like other parts of South Yorkshire although there were narrow coal seams on top of the gannister seams and were mainly outcropped coal. There were a number of razorsmiths, pen knifemakers, horn pressers, scale pressers and one of the last strongholds of these was in Stannington and one of the last workers was Colin Goodison (above). One of the most well-known buildings is Syke (at Dungworth (left) which remained largely intact until around 25 years ago when it was sold and renovated to its present state.

The Bus Stop Project The Bus Stop Project was an idea that Head Teacher James Connolly at Loxley Primary School had been thinking about for quite some time. It was such a grimy, ugly bus shelter, sitting next door to the school entrance on Rodney Hill. Mr Connolly felt it really pulled the mood of the community down, and he was determined to do something about it, possibly as a school art project. Tasmin Torrington, one of the teaching assistants at Loxley Primary, has a degree in fine art and so used her skills to work with the children to help them design a mural for the bus stop. Children from each year group held

meetings together and came up with design suggestions and drawings, which were submitted by Mr. Connolly to Bradfield Parish Council for approval. They included beautiful scenes of the Loxley Valley, trees and fields and blue skies. The children were very excited to get the go ahead! During lockdown, the keyworkers' children continued to come to school while their friends stayed at home, their parents kept working in hospitals, pharmacies transport and other essential services. These same resilient, incredible children have painted the beautiful mural that you now see, having added a stunning rainbow to their design.
The rainbow has come to be recognised as a symbol of unity in the community, the recognition of the effort and sacrifices that the NHS, care workers, Teachers, transport workers and all other keyworkers have made over this difficult time. As lockdown is being slowly eased and people are now starting to have some more freedom and normality, the mural will hopefully remind the community of Loxley that there is always an end to the storm, and as it blows over the valley we are left with peace beauty and hope. As the school motto scribed above the mural states, our community will get through this by Aiming High Together.

You have sort of an origin story don’t you? About how you got into making things with stone? I love stone! So I have a massive urge to work with stone. I thought that being a drystone waller would fullfill that urge. So that’s what I did. One day I just decided to carve the walls I was doing with a face, as a sort of signature. At that point I’d never carved anything but I learned that once I had an image in my head, I could carve anything at all. And so Stoneface became Stoneface. So you never had any sort of formal training? It was just practice that made you so good at what you do? Well it was never about art. It was about a signature. An identity. Speaking of identity, what’s the difference between Stoneface and Andrew Vickers? Stoneface is a mask that Andrew Vickers puts on. I’m a really shy person. But as Stoneface I can do a lot of things that Andrew Vickers can’t do. So that’s what it is, it’s just a mask.
Is there anything that you dislike about your job? Well I love everything about it. I’m just not comfortable with the amount of attention that I get from it. But that’s not a bad thing it just is what it is. It’s a contradiction because I’m quite a shy person but I actually attract a lot of attention so…it is what it is. A contradiction. You don’t relish being a little bit famous at all? I’ve never in my life ever considered wanting to be famous. I want to make a living, and I do make a living, doing what I do but I’ve never wanted to be famous. But of course the contradiction is that you have to generate attention in order to sell products. Well that’s a real contradiction, you’re right. And I think that’s where Stoneface enters into the equation, because Stoneface can be that person and Andrew Vickers can’t.

Where does the inspiration for your art come from? Also, do you ever scrap anything once you start working on it? What’s the difference between the things you keep and the things you scrap? Well I scrap very little these days because to be honest, a lot of it sells anyway. The pieces that I really love are down the woods, and I’m inspired by what surrounds me at that point. At the minute, I’m just surrounded by love. I’m inspired by all of that.

Are you inspired by any other artists? No, I’m dyslexic for a start, so I’ve never studied anything. I’m just inspired by life. What’s the end goal with the woods? Are you gonna keep filling it with art or keep replacing the art so that it’s always changing? There’s never been an end goal. The wood is my diary. If you visit it, you might not understand what it is, but it’s actually telling you everything that’s gone on in my world. At some point, I might invest a bit of time into telling people what that is, but I’m not ready to do that right now. So you’re art is more of a personal diary, and if people enjoy it or not that’s up to them. I wouldn’t say that I don’t care whether people enjoy it or not. What do you think is the purpose of art? I think my idea of everything is, it’s not about my art. Storrs wood is a place of nature. If you bring your friends, children, whatever to that place, then you might interact with the art and that can’t be a bad thing. But you don’t have to understand anything. You just have to enjoy what your doing. Have a thought, maybe even a conversation. Two of your most striking pieces are an elephant and a ‘star man’ made of DVDs. The elephant I did a number of years ago and that was for the Herd of Sheffield, which was a charity event basically so I didn’t make any money from that. But it made quite a lot of money for the childen’s hospital. The star man is a personal project. It’s inspired by when David Bowie died, and it’s based on the idea of constantly changing. If you see the video on Facebook, you can see it in action. No matter what the day is, the sculpture constantly reinvents itself. That’s what star man is all about. Did you put a lot of thought into the decision to use man-made materials, given how it contrasts the rest of the

gallery? To be honest, there’s not a day that goes by where I don’t think about anything. So yeah, it’s a massive interaction with thought. Are you working on anything new at the moment? Well I think my most recent piece, ‘After the Storm’ is the piece that’s most relevant to me. I’ve found this settlement in my life, where life has suddenly become actually acceptable. And I’m starting to understand what my place in this world is, so that’s what that piece is about. Have you ever thought about branching out beyond Storrs woods? I’ve never wanted to be anywhere else since I bought the place. It’s my spiritual home. It’s where I want to be. I’ve named it Sheffield’s green cathedral and that is what it is it’s a spiritual place.
I really enjoy your work. That’s very kind. It’s not what I do the work for, but it’s great if my work connects with people and connects people to each other. I think that’s the big thing, connection. Yeah I think we’ve learned that with Covid. How important it is to be connected to other people. That’s absolutely right. When all this started, I was posting pictures of the woods and everything. Then I realised how pompous that is. I’m in this place that’s tranquil and beautiful while everybody’s stuck wherever they’re stuck, could be a small flat or wherever. So I just stopped doing it immediately. Peasholm Park
If you've had enough of the beach, it's well worth taking a trip to Peasholm Park. The park is hugely unique due to the fact it has been restored to former glories in recent years after falling into disrepair in the 1970s. Now, it's a tranquil beauty spot and one of the most interesting places in Yorkshire. - Peasholm Park Glen is home to two trees from a family that at one point was believed to be extinct - the Dickinson Golden Elm. With the Peak District literally on our doorstep, it would be remiss of us to not take advantage of the utterly beautiful walking routes dotted around. So strap on your walking boots and take a walk with us down to Damflask Reservoir.
On the edge of the Peak District, sandwiched between Loxley and Low Bradfield, lies Damflask reservoir. Linked to the nearby Strines, Agden and Dale Dike reservoirs, it was constructed to supply fresh water to the city of Sheffield back in 1896. The name is taken from the village that was washed away in the Great Sheffield Flood of 1864. Damflask Village stood near the site of the current dam wall and had a boozer, corn mill, paper mill, wire mill, blacksmith’s shop and a small amount of houses. Following the flood, the village was never rebuilt and the reservoir was built instead. Whether you’re local to Loxley or Bradfield, or just fancy a hike/drive up to the reservoir, there’s
plenty to do once you arrive. The two universities’ rowing clubs are based on the site, alongside the Sheffield Viking Sailing Club whose members, if you’re lucky, you can catch nipping across the water. The woodlands surrounding the reservoir have always been popular with walkers, especially since the owners of the site, Yorkshire Water, opened the site fully to the public in 2002 and revamped their walking paths to be more accessible.

...programmer for an independent cinema It’s not just about watching films…but it’s a big part. “OK, so that might seem obvious but it is an under-appreciated fact! At my first festival, I watched almost 40 films in 9 days, leaving at 8:30am and sometimes not returning until after midnight. I also attend preview weekends held around the country and receive online ‘screeners’ for upcoming films to help develop marketing strategies and campaigns to reach out to communities and organisations I think will be interested in seeing them, especially for smaller films without a lot of press. Sometimes a film won’t have an age certification (U, PG, 12A, etc.), so I’ll need to apply to the council for a temporary age rating by writing a report that details all the naughty bits - otherwise it has to be shown as an 18, which might not be the most helpful if it’s something like a German animation for kids. That said, I’ve seen some things, man…” In film exhibition, your week runs Friday-Thursday (and you’re always at least a month ahead). “New films are usually released every Friday. The weekly schedule is worked out the Monday before, after taking into consideration box office figures from the weekend, upcoming films and any special events/one-offs (like Q&As or panel discussions). We use grids to map out the upcoming year: month-by-month and week-by-week. I can recall the release dates of some films quicker than the birthdays of my own family members.”
A lot of our customers sit through films they know they’re not going to like…regularly. “We have customers who visit us nearly every day, watching multiple films in one trip. It’s not unusual for me to pop to the box office and see a familiar face going into a screen at midday, to see them emerge from another at half 5, eager to discuss the films they’ve watched that day. Our discussion group and film studies programmes encourage people to go deeper with their appreciation of film, even if something isn’t their cup of tea: the more you learn about film, the more tools you have to go into something you might not know much about, and still get something out of it. I love it; I think it’s important to open yourself up to watching things you might not be into. It helps you to develop your critical thinking, learn more about yourself (maybe find something new you enjoy), while getting a glimpse into how other people see and experience the world.” Too many films, not enough screens “The thing about arthouse/indie cinemas is that there are loads of films to choose from…but not a lot of screens. Some of the biggest indies in the UK only have 3 or 4! Head to your nearest multiplex and you’re likely to find a screen count that goes well into double figures. With an average of around 15 films released each week and not enough space to play them all, we have to get selective. The companies that distribute films to cinemas have screening commitments, which means we might

have to show bigger blockbusters 4 times per day for 2 whole weeks - which takes out an entire screen! This means all the other films (new releases; films held over from the previous weeks; and one-offs), all with their own screening commitments, have to fit around these, which makes for an interesting jigsaw puzzle when it comes to scheduling every Monday.” ‘Why don’t you play Marvel/ DC/‘Insert other extraordinarily popular franchise here’ films?’ “This is a question I get asked a lot, and is tied in with the previous point. Arthouse/ indie cinemas generally exist to provide space for smaller budget or international titles that multiplexes don’t tend to play. We like to put on a varied spread: a packed programme that will genuinely appeal to the wonderfully diverse communities of Sheffield and give an opportunity for people who aren’t usually represented in mainstream media to see themselves on the big screen. We will still play the occasional blockbuster, but given the kinds of screening commitments I mentioned before, we have to (and are more than happy to!) make space for the kinds of films we were built to screen. Going out for tea would be boring if everywhere served the same thing. Much like your food markets and hidden gem bars and restaurants, indie cinemas are there to expand the menu.” Have some interesting tales from your trade? What is Medisculpt Therapy? Dr Grace from G&M Healthcare, Sheffield’s premier weight loss clinic, explains the benefits of Medisculpt therapy... MediSculpt Therapy is a non-surgical weight loss program used to improve overweightness, obesity and some chronic medical conditions like Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, high cholesterol, hypertension and sleep apnoea. Medisculpt Therapy comprises of three main components; the diet which is based on high protein foods with low carbohydrate and low fat contents and two body contouring treatments, LPG Endermologie and Vanquish Me TM or Exilis Elite machines. The body contouring treatment LPG Endermologie is used for skin tightening in order to prevent the development of loose and sagging skin during and after the rapid weight loss. The second body contouring machine is a radio frequency machine for body fat reduction. We have two machines either the Exilis Elite or the Vanquish Machine, and the choice of which machine to use depends on the treatment package and area of the body requiring treatment. The radio frequency machines result in a significant fat reduction in targeted areas like the tummy, thighs or arms. These treatments are carried out weekly by our fully trained therapists and last about 30-40 minutes each. In total you need about 75-90 minutes per week for your treatments. Weight loss with MediSculpt Therapy is safe, efficient and rapid. The weight loss progress is constantly monitored by a qualified GP and fully trained therapists who check weight loss progress, blood pressure, body fat content, metabolic rates and do blood tests on a regular basis. With regard to the results we know from experience that a female patient will typically lose one stone a month and a male patient will typically lose one to one and a half stones a month. MediSculpt Therapy consists of six phases which deliver amazing, safe, efficient and sustainable weight loss. During phase 1 of MediSculpt Therapy the diet comprises of 5 meals and one snack a day. Protein foods are filling and hence patients don’t feel hungry. To supplement the diet some fruit and vegetables are also allowed on the diet. The vegetables can be boiled, steamed, roasted, grilled or stir fried. Herbs and spices can be added to increase flavour. We also do metabolic tests to check your metabolic rates and also provide supplements to ensure you don’t lack in essential minerals like magnesium, potassium, sodium chloride, calcium and trace minerals. You need to fast for at least 4 hrs before your metabolic test or initial blood test.
Once the phase 1 target is achieved after loosing about 70% of your target weight we move patients onto phase 2 of the diet where we introduce normal foods like weighed amounts of chicken, meat, fish and diary like eggs. And once 90% of your target weight loss is achieved we wean patients to measured amounts of normal eating on phase 3. Thereafter phases 4-6 are stabilisation phases to ensure that optimum weaning off from the diet is achieved without putting on back the weight you have lost on. Once you have achieved your stabilisation phases we have a life long maintenance programme where we offer 6 weekly follow ups for review by a therapist who measures your weight and body fat composition. Follow up is then 3-6 monthly for one year or as required thereafter. Cost of the program depends on the package you choose. We have 3 price packages, basic, standard and deluxe. All packages consist of your consultation fee (£100) and blood test fee (£100) followed by the package fees. Supplement prices are £50/month but vary depending on the package you choose. For the sponge 260g self-raising flour 260g white caster sugar 260g butter 4 free-range eggs (260g) 2 tbsp warm water 2 lemons, zested 260g frozen blueberries (Ivanhoe or Herbert preferably, but any will do!) For the drizzle 3 lemons, juiced 1 lemon, zested 50g caster sugar, plus extra for topping
Preheat your oven to 180°c and line a baking tray with greaseproof paper. A tray bake approximately 32cm by 22cm by 5cm should give you 15 servings. In a large bowl, combine the flour and sugar for the sponge. Add the butter, eggs, warm water and lemon zest then whisk everything together for 1 minute. Pour the cake mixture into the prepared tray and bake in the preheated oven for 10 to 15 minutes, then take it out of the oven and scatter with the frozen blueberries. Pop the tray back in the oven for another 10 to 15 minutes, or until the surface is golden brown and a thin knife or skewer comes out clean when poked into the centre of the cake. Place the lemon juice, zest and sugar in a saucepan and heat gently until all the sugar has melted. Make lots of tiny holes in the top of your cake with a thin knife or skewer, then pour the drizzle evenly over the whole surface. Sprinkle a generous handful of caster sugar over the top to give the cake a little crunch, then leave to cool before cutting into portions and serving.

Trust in Mercedes The German car maker came out on top in a new trust survey

Mercedes-Benz is the UK’s most trusted car brand, according to the 2020 CarGurus Car Buyer Trust Index report, a first-of-its-kind study commissioned by online automotive marketplace CarGurus. The German car maker topped a list of 21 manufacturers that have been ranked as part of the inaugural CarGurus Car Buyer Trust Index, a new independent report that provides unprecedented insight into how perceived trust impacts decisionmaking among different genders and age groups. Audi, Ford, Toyota and Volvo completed the top five with Fiat recording the lowest overall brand ranking. Researchers at GlobalWebIndex asked 2,183 car-buyers to rank car makers on five key factors that build trust: integrity, transparency, genuineness, social conscience and reliability. This formulated the overall performance
for each brand. 21 car makers were included in the Index, with 20 based on sales data from The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Ltd (SMMT) with Tesla added as a brand of topical interest. In addition, the report also showed how men and women differ when it comes to trusting automotive brands. Mercedes-Benz was most trusted overall by male car buyers whereas Audi and Ford shared the top spot as the brands in which women put the most faith. There were greater differences of opinion among some of the other brands, though. Kia, rated as second overall for men, was a lowly 15th for women. MINI, on the other hand, was ranked fifth overall by women and 15th by men.

The government has announced that the UK is bringing forward a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans to 2035. The ban was announced ahead of the launch of a UK-hosted UN climate summit, and will include hybrids for the first time. This effectively means that only new electric or hydrogen vehicles could be sold after this date, which will inevitably strongly impact the makeup of vehicles in UK dealerships and on our roads over the next 1520 years. Alongside Sir David Attenborough at the event, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that “2020 must be the year we turn the tide on global
warming” and is setting out these plans as part of the UK’s commitment to hit a 2050 net zero emissions target. The PM called for international efforts to reach net zero as early as possible through investment in cleaner, greener technology, preservation of our natural habitat and measures to improve resilience to climate change impact. David Attenborough said: “Now although we have agreed on the problem we have to do something about it. We don’t need to emphasise that the longer we leave it... the worse it is going to get. So now is the moment. It is up to us to organise the nations of the world to do something about it.”
