All a bit strange this, isn’t it? It feels like a lifetime ago we were putting the finishing touches to our March magazine, looking forward to the April issue and planning for the future of our publication. Since then, pretty much everyone’s world has been turned upside down with the spread of CoVid-19. Social distancing measures are taking their time to bed in to those who weren’t initially taking this issue seriously, but the majority of folk have begun to isolate themselves and accept our new life for the coming months. Small businesses are vital to Sheffield. The individuality, creativity and uniqueness of each and every one of them will be missing from our day to day lives for the most part. But if you can, in any way, help them out. They need our love at this time. Understandably, advertising budgets (to which this magazine lives on) have been cut. For now, the plan is to continue on, working from home and ensuring our distribution team are absolutely bang on when it comes to hygiene so you can be free of the anxiety of picking up this magazine and enjoy our offering this month. We need to give a huge amount of love to the current frontline workers. Supermarket staff, delivery drivers, pharmacy workers, paramedics and NHS staff – what a bunch of heroes. Final Lottery bid submitted for Hillsborough Park A project to open a brand new café and older people’s activity centre in Hillsborough Park has moved a step closer, after a final bid was submitted to the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF). Age UK Sheffield are asking for £581,500 of Lottery funding towards the £967,000 project, which would restore the Grade II listed Old Coach House building, which is currently derelict. The Lottery decision is likely some time in the summer of 2020. If successful, building work could commence before the end of the year. The NLHF previously granted the charity £49,700 in December 2018 to develop the project to a stage where the full bid could be submitted. Age UK Sheffield chief executive, Steve Chu, said: “We have worked extremely hard over the past year to bring the project to this stage. I am confident we have put forward an excellent business plan, a wide range of exciting activities and, most important of all, a fully-costed proposal to save this historic building from collapse. Local people have been
extremely supportive of the project, and I really hope we can deliver it for ourselves and the entire local community.” During the development phase, the neighbouring Potting Shed building has been added to the project. Age UK Sheffield hopes to run this as a “Maker’s Shed” providing an exciting range of gardening, woodwork, upcycling, and other craft activities. Planning permission requests to develop both The Old Coach House and the Potting Shed have been submitted to Sheffield City Council. Age UK Sheffield is contributing £100,000 of its reserves to deliver the project, whilst partnership funding of £215,000 has already been secured, dependent on the green light from the Lottery. The historic venue will have to auction off memorabilia it has saved over the years in order to stay afloat during the uncertainty of COVID-19. The world's first black footballer was a pioneer, not just in football, but of pretty much every sport he turned his hand to. In 1886 he became the first man in the world to run 100 yards in ten seconds, setting a record that lasted 30 years. He was also the first northerner ever to win the annual race at Stamford Bridge. A career in football took Wharton to the Steel City where he played for both Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday and where he opened a string of boozers. He dabbled in professional cricket and set a record time cycling between Blackburn and Preston. Simply put, Arthur was a legendary sportsman and one every Sheffielder should be proud of.

MADE OF STONES! Officially launching on 2 April, the iconic bitter will be brewed based on specifications derived from the recipe that helped Stones become the highest selling bitter in the UK during the 60s and 70s. First brewed in Sheffield at the Cannon Brewery, the beloved bitter will make its triumphant return to the Steel City this spring. Head brewer at True North Brew Co, Dean Hollingworth said: “This is something we’ve wanted to do for a while so we were excited when Molson Coors gave us the thumbs up. We want to do it right so we’re going all out to make sure the recipe is as close as it was back in the bitter’s glory days. We’ll be using a traditional cask recipe with Challenger and Goldings hops and the original Stones yeast strain, kindly given to us by Molson Coors. We’re even going as far as recreating the water profile that was used at the time.” The aim of the revival is to bring a classic brand that is quintessentially Sheffield back to its roots. Stones Bitter was originally brewed as a drink for the steelworkers of Sheffield which is why the recipe and its water content included extra minerals to replenish those they lost whilst working. A lot of effort has gone into recreating the recipe as an ode to the people that helped build Sheffield into the city it is today.
True North Brew Co. operates 12 venues across Sheffield, Barnsley and Derbyshire and are known for delivering excellent eating and drinking experiences, as well as producing Sheffield Dry Gin, True North beer, coffee and Sheffield Vodka. The cask bitter will be brewed in the centre of Sheffield in the True North Brew Co. brewery at an ABV of 4.1%. It will be distributed exclusively to True North venues located throughout Sheffield, Barnsley and Derbyshire. Available from 2 April, beer lovers can experience the classic taste of Stones bitter as it was originally intended. REGENERA TION Renovation to play a ‘key role in new cultural district’ in Sheffield city centre
Sheffield council has unveiled a £1.5 billion plan to transform the Sheffield train station area in what would be one of the city’s biggest redevelopment projects to date. The project, which is aiming to be ready for the arrival of HS2 and Northern Powerhouse Rail in 2040, will see new buildings for private investment as well as a huge change in roads and tram lines, with the route/stop for the trams shifting in front of the station, passing along Pond Street and Sheffield Interchange. The road linking the city centre to the Parkway will then move behind the station, where the tramlines are at the moment as well as Sheaf Street becoming pedestrianised and Park Square roundabout entirely scrapped, making way for new buildings. The plans include spaces for new hotels, bars and restaurants, which could create around 3,000 jobs. A huge, landscaped pedestrian bridge would link Park Hill with Howard Street and up to 1,000 homes could also be built. Funding for the project is set to come from the council, the Sheffield City Region, the government, Network Rail, HS2 and Transport for

the North. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, the cabinet member for business and investment, said to Hallam FM: “We were asked to develop a framework for Midland Station and we took the position to look at not just developing the station but how can we reap the benefits of the wider regeneration of the area over the next 15/20 years. “It’s probably the largest project the city’s ever been involved in – it’s a hugely ambitious project. The current experience when you drive in to the station is horrendous – we’re going to turn things round. Coming out of the station you’ll no longer see cars but hopefully you’ll see the new tram line going across there. There’ll be better facilities for cyclists. “The parkway roundabout completely disappears so those communities up there that feel disconnected from the city centre, hopefully with this regeneration activity it brings them a lot closer to the city centre.” The plans will go before the council’s next cabinet meeting as well as being put out for public consolation.

SORT YOUR LAWN Your lawn will have been neglected over the winter months, the poor old chap. Now’s the time to blow the dust of the mower and give it some much needed TLC. Begin with the blades lower for a shorter cut to make sure the grass stays sturdy and grows out healthy. If you’re starting out with a new lawn, now’s the time to sow grow seedlings or lay turf. PRUNE THE SHRUBS Remove dead, damaged, and diseased branches from plants or shrubbery. You can cut back the old dead growth of deciduous grasses and herbaceous perennials now, although, if you’d like to be wildlife friendly, it’s best to leave these until early spring. Plants from last year that survived the winter will need to be trimmed, too.

With the world in a bit of a pickle, and the majority of us stuck indoors, we're entering a peculiar time where socially, it's going to be difficult. Without a doubt. It's all for the greater good and hopefully it won't take too long for us to settle back in to day to day life once this blows over. For now, though, we need to weather the storm and do it together. We're in the privileged position of being able to continue producing a magazine, so we're going to use that platform to offer you support this month. Now more than ever it’s important that we take the time out to unwind and check-in with how we’re feeling. Perfect for beginners, this app slowly takes you through the basics of mindfulness and guided meditation. There’s also a sleep section featuring dozy “sleepcasts” to help help you nod off, and a “move” section for exercising. Free trials available. Calm Similar to Headspace, Calm is another podcast to help teach anxiety-reducing mindfulness techniques. Both offer free trials, and a particular pulling point from this app are the sleep stories featuring famous narrators such as Stephen Fry, as well as a mood check-in feature so you can track how you’re feeling each day. Strava As it stands, we’re still allowed one outdoor exercise activity a day (while adhering to social distancing rules, of course). This means that it’s the perfect time to get a good running routine going, and with
Strava not only can you track and monitor your progress and routes, but you can share them with your pals on the app too. Get some healthy competition going with friends and/or family and see who can clock up the most miles. Lumosity Just as important as staying physically active when possible, keeping the mind focused is a big part of healthy quarantining. This free brain-training app provides daily exercises for your mind, taking scientifically-validated tests and turning them into fun games which sharpen your memory, attention, processing speed and problem-solving skills. Poesie Each day you are greeted with a classic poem with this app - a treasure trove of the arts. If any hit the spot, you can save them to revisit whenever you’d like, or continue to browse the vast collection of writing, music, and plays available. Users can comment beneath each piece with their own interpretation or thoughts, creating

a community-like feel where you can view trending content or find something to suit your mood via tags. Houseparty One of the most popular apps to come out of the lockdown period, Houseparty brings your loved ones - up to eight people - into your front room via video group calls, where you can socialise via games such as Heads Up, Trivia and Quick Draw. Get a couple of drinks and snacks in and you’ve got your own little virtual party going on. Mario Kart Tour When it comes to home entertainment, the Mario Kart franchise will always manage to come up trumps. Download for free (it offers in-app purchases), create a Nintendo account if you don’t already have one, and before you know it you’ll be whizzing around a track while dodging turtles and banana skins. It’s good to escape for a bit, eh?

Keep on top of your mind As fundamentally social beings, the reality of having to isolate from others while being bombarded with a seemingly never-ending stream of worrying news can naturally have a negative impact on mental health. While the external factors are far from ideal, it’s important to take steps to keep your mind and body in good shape to help you cooly navigate the stress a crisis can often bring. Meditate Mindfulness meditation has been shown to help with anxiety, emotional reactivity, and generally improve mental wellbeing. And since we’ll be spending a lot of time in isolation, there’s never been a better time to get to know your own mind. The basics are simple: sit still for 10 minutes and focus on something (usually the breath) while allowing thoughts and emotions to simply pass by. This simple task, done consistently over a long period of time, can profoundly affect the way you engage with the world. There are plenty of great apps out there to help with this, such as Headspace and Calm. Another popular app is ‘Waking Up’. It is the most expensive of the three, but the developers offer it for free to anyone who can’t afford it, you just have to email and ask. Exercise According to Government guidelines we can still leave the house once a day in order to exercise, provided you keep your distance (two metres) from anyone you don’t share a household with. Get outside and get some fresh air, get some vitamin D, and keep on top of your physical health, because it is linked very closely to your mental health. As well as the obvious healthy benefits, it will also allow you to develop a deeper appreciation for how lucky we are to live in one of UK’S greenest cities. If you download the Strava app, you can keep track of your runnings stats and share them with/show them off to friends. Of course, there are plenty of ways to stay fit in the home (or on your back garden) and YouTube is positively awash with free training tutorials to keep you active while staying safe.
Tips for taking care of your mental health during the coronavirus outbreak.
Call your friends and family It is vitally important that we maintain contact with friends and family. Even if you can’t see them in person, you can still hit them up by telephone, email, social media or skype. A popular app at the moment is Houseparty, which allows up to eight people to join a video call - perfect for a bit of virtual pub action! It’s also important to remember that if you can’t reach friends or family and feel as though you need someone to talk to, you can still contact a number of helplines for emotional support, such as the Samaritans (at 116 123). Keep a Gratitude Journal Taking the time to write down what you are grateful for at the end of each day can help provide some much-needed perspective and lift your mood. These can be big things (you might be grateful for your health, or your children) or small ones (a good cup of coffee). Maintain a Routine If you are currently off work, or working from home with a lot of flexibility, it can be easy to lose all semblance of routine. There’s nothing wrong with taking a little time off, but it’s important to have some kind of structure to your day to day life Have your meals at a similar time each day. Make the effort to cook (to the extent that the bare supermarket shelves allow). Don’t be the guy who’s eating cereal in his pyjamas at two in the afternoon. Don’t let your sleeping patterns go off the rails. Most adults need 7-8 hours of sleep. Getting much more or less than this can have a deleterious effect on brain function and mental health. It is also important to go to sleep and wake up at a similar time every day if you want to feel alert. The body loves predictability. Most of all, schedule some form of mentally stimulating task. This could be learning a language or instrument, reading a challenging book, or just solving a few crossword puzzles.

Hi Johanna, so for the benefit of our readers, what is it you study exactly? I’m looking at the Sheffield dialect and in particular how it’s changed over the last 100 years. I’ve been using an archive in Western Bank library, which has recordings of Sheffield speakers going as far back as 1901, and comparing those with recordings from the present day. I’ve also been looking at how speech is affected by social factors like age, gender, and social class. What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned? That there’s a social divide in Sheffield between east and west. In the east people tend to be more working class and in the west more middle class. That manifests in people’s language. People in the west speak something closer to ‘standard’ BBC English, while people in the east have more of a broad Sheffield accent with lots of traditionally Sheffield features. What’s the reason for that? It goes back years, to when Sheffield was in its prime as an industrial city. All the factories were in the east, starting at Kelham Island, going all the way back through Attercliffe. Working class people tended to live in the east for the job

opportunities. They wanted to be closer to the steelworks. Meanwhile housing in the west was more expensive, because it was well away from all the smog and pollution from the factories. What is unique about the Sheffield accent? There are a lot of words that are uniquely Sheffield. Words like ‘reyt’ ‘gennel’ ‘nannan’ ‘misen’ (instead of ‘myself’). You tend to get the shortening of certain vowels too, like ‘make’ and ‘take’ becoming ‘mek’ and ‘tek’. There’s also h-dropping, so that ‘happy’ becomes ‘appy’ and replacing ‘th’ sounds with ‘d’ which is why people call us dee-dahs. What made you want to study accents, and the Sheffield one in particular? I’ve always been interested in accents. I remember being at school and being taught not to speak a certain way. The way that all teenagers in Sheffield spoke - I would never get a job sounding like that. I was really triggered by that. Why? I thought.

Do you think that view is commonplace? How do you think the Sheffield accent is generally perceived? I’m biased because I’m from Sheffield, and so is all my family, so I love it. But I can see why someone could be insecure about it. Northern accents are often associated with lower social class or being less educated unfortunately. What do you think can be done about that, if anything? As I say, a lot of that stigma starts in school, when kids are conditioned to believe that their regional way of speaking is not as valuable as ‘standard’ English. A lot of researchers right now are figuring out ways to address that.
Do you think having more role models with a Sheffield accent in the media would help? Yeah definitely. That’s a really good point. When I put stuff out about my research people always say ‘oh yeah, that’s what Sean Bean sounds like’ or that’s how ‘Alex Turner talks’. Role models like that are a point of regional pride. I mean, if you listened to the BBC in the past, there were no regional accents. Nowadays, there’s a lot more regional accents on the BBC, and people’s attitudes about how we should speak are relaxing a bit. Prejudiced attitudes are always softened through exposure.

THE FULL MONTY (1997) Probably one of the most iconic Sheffield films of all time – you’re seen as something of an oddity up ‘ere if you haven’t seen this classic at least once. Released in 1997, when the city was still reeling from factory closures and job losses, Gaz, Horse, and the rest of the lads decide to get their “cloth off” for a bit of cash. Keep your eyes peeled for the Shiregreen Working Men’s Club, Crookes Cemetery and the old Sheffield Ski Village, as well as a smattering of the old factories down Attercliffe way.
‘71 (2014) Jack O’Connell [Skins, This is England] plays a British soldier caught deep behind enemy lines during the troubles in Northern Ireland. The majority of the picture was filmed in Sheffield, with Leeds, Blackburn and Liverpool also used for certain scenes. The city’s famous Park Hill Flats were chosen to portray the now-demolished Divis Flats, a West Belfast stronghold of the Provisional IRA during the seventies, while various other locations in and around central Sheffield can be seen throughout the film.
FOUR LIONS (2010) You might not think that a film about homegrown terrorism could ever be funny, but, surprisingly, you would be wrong. Four Lions tells the story of a group of young Muslim men from Sheffield who train with the intention of becoming Islamic terrorists. In the final raucous scenes set during a fun-run in the centre of London, you might be able to recognise Kebabish on the Wicker, the Moor shopping lane and Campo Lane.
THIS IS ENGLAND (FILM AND TV SERIES) This cult film and drama series tells the story of Shaun, a young man who is drawn into British skinhead culture and goes on to enjoy a variety of escapades with his colourful group of friends. DOCTOR WHO (2018) The ongoing tales of the mysterious time-travelling alien known only as, The Doctor. The Doctor is back and being played by Huddersfield native Jodie Whittaker, but that is not the only thing that is noticeably more Yorkshire this time around. Though the series has filmed in Sheffield many times before, series eleven features the only set of companions who are actually from Sheffield. Whovians from across the United Kingdom can now watch the TARDIS team play out their battles with aliens in such locations as Park Hill, Hunter House Road, Ecclesall Road and the HTC Plant near Meadowhall.
THREADS (1984) Produced during the Cold War this unrelenting drama still has the ability to send chills down the spine of most Sheffielders, as it follows the aftermath of a nuclear attack on the city. The story focuses on two local families during the escalation of conflict between the US, Russia and the Middle East, and depicts the grave severity of what could happen as those tensions reach their peak. DEAD MAN’S SHOES (2004) This breakthrough Warp Films feature was filmed across various locations in the Peak District, with a number of notable scenes based in the town of Matlock, and starred Paddy Considine and Tony Kebbel. The story follows ex-soldier Richard, who returns to his hometown to seek revenge on the group that had tormented his younger brother Anthony. The film is narrated by Considine, who relays a gripping tale of evil, sin and retribution. WHEN SATURDAY COMES (1996) A classic zero-to-hero footie film starring Sheffield’s finest, Sean Bean. Fast-living Jimmy Muir is a brewery worker in Sheffield with unrivalled potential for the game and an arrogant lack of respect for authority. Offered the chance of a lifetime to try out for boyhood club Sheffield United F.C, Muir nearly throws it all away in a night of debauchery. One for Blades and Bean fans alike.
HOW TO TALK TO GIRLS AT PARTIES (2018) Based on the short story by Neil Gaiman, this film follows three young punks who hope to spend a night drinking and finding young women to relieve them of their virginity. While attending a house party, they find they have stumbled across a society of aliens on a mission to Earth. Directed by John Cameron Mitchell and though set in London (1970s Croydon as a matter of fact) the film was, in fact, filmed in Sheffield due to its wealth of still existing brutalist 70s architecture. Viewers may well recognize the Three Tuns Pub just off Paradise Square, which stands in for the punk matriarch Queen Boadicea’s bar as well as the Richmond suburb.

KILL LIST (2011) Produced by Sheffield-based Warp Films and directed by Ben Wheatley, Kill List is a gory 2011 horror film. Telling the story of two hit men who embark on a job which has a lot more in store than they can ever anticipate. You’ll spot shots of rural Sheffield, panoramic city scenes as well as the railway station.
THE PRINCESS BRIDE (1987) This American rom-com achieved moderate success at the box office, but would find later find a large following as a cult film. The story is a fairy tale adventure about a beautiful young woman and her one true love, who must try and find each other after spending years apart. Although very much an American production, many parts were filmed in various UK locations, prominently Sheffield and Derbyshire, while Bakewell’s Haddon Hall serves as the setting of Prince Humperdinck’s castle.
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO HAROLD SMITH? (1999) Set in 70s Sheffield, the film follows Vince Smith’s efforts to date colleague Joanna Robinson. With the former a die-hard disco fan and the latter a punk, the plot undoubtedly takes a few comedic turns. Meanwhile Vince’s father Harold is thrust into the limelight as a minor celebrity after proving he has psychic powers. Dr Peter Robinson, Joanna’s father (played by Stephen Fry) attempts to put these powers to the test. Plenty of Roxy Disco action, a bit of magic and a lot of humour.
X+Y (2015) This social awareness drama tells the tale of a young autistic man with savant abilities and his quest to understand the nature of love as he takes part in an international mathematics competition. This film was made in collaboration with the Asia Film Financing Forum, with scenes shot in Hong Kong, though principle filming locations were in Sheffield. Recognisable shots will reveal Meersbrook Park in all its glory and former students may recognise the halls of High Storrs School and the cafeteria of King Edward VII School.
COMING SOON: EVERYBODY’S TALKING ABOUT JAMIE (2020) Inspired by a BBC Three documentary, the screenplay following young Jamie Campbell and his ambitions to become a drag queen premiered at the Crucible Theatre in 2017 to widespread acclaim. After stints at the West End and on Broadway, Film4 and Warp Films announced they would be producing a feature-length film starring the likes of Richard E. SHOWMAN Derren Brown, as things stand, is currently preparing to head out on a UK tour for his first live show in five years this year. Whether it takes place or not, is to be announced, but in the meantime, we spoke to the TV star about audience participation, new challenges and performing in New York…
‘Showman’ will be your first new UK stage tour for five years. What can you tell us about it? Well at the time of answering this, we are still writing and rehearsing it. The nature of my shows is that I never really know how well anything will work until I get an audience involved. So the first week or so we change a huge amount. But the heart of the show is about remembering what’s important. Like how the very things that we find most isolating in life - our fears and difficulties actually connect us. Framed with what I think will be some extraordinary demonstrations of my voodoo. What particular new challenges will ‘Showman’ bring for you? It’s always a challenge to take ideas I feel are important and honest and use my strange effects (which spans the spectrum from honesty to deceit in their methods) to communicate those points. I had also grown very comfortable with the material from Underground (and its Broadway cousin Secret) which had truly become second nature. Starting again with a blank slate is exciting and daunting. Facing that first week of previews while we work out exactly what the show is. It’s a lot. This will be your 16th year on tour. Does it get any easier? I do actually now have to be more careful to avoid injuries. That’s a new, slightly depressing thing. On the other hand, I know every decent cafe and writing spot around the cities I tour in which makes daytimes a treat. The busier I am at home, the more I appreciate having my daytimes to myself for a few months. And I worry less about
the show. I enjoy it all more, it’s in my blood, I don’t struggle to find it or worry too much that things won’t work. And all that makes for a better, more mature performance than what it was a decade ago.

What was the experience of performing in New York like? There is a level of professionalism out there in the Broadway world - perhaps because the stakes are so high and so much money gets spent on these shows - that we don’t do in the same way in British theatre. Here it's a small bunch of people mucking in and doing everything to make a show work. Plenty of those people might be a bit vinegary or chippy, it’s part of the charm of it. Out there a thousand specialised, micro-unionised people are each doing a specific job faultlessly and with a brilliantly positive attitude. It’s infectious. And Broadway has a starry aura around it that the West End doesn’t. So that was nice for a bit. But you’d go mad if you started to think it was real life. So it’s good to be home.
Also, as an audience, they are much more vocal, narrating their own experiences more. There’s a lot more ‘NOOOO!!’ And ‘FUUUUUUCK!!’s from the crowd. On the other hand, half of the audience is classic Broadway, and noticeably older. At home I might spot two older couples in the audience, but in New York about a quarter of the audience consisted of pensioners. But the rest were young and vibrant and contained many fans that had, amazingly, flown in from around the world. So it was a diverse group, and part of the fun was feeling them all come together as the show went on. And lots of actors - famous and otherwise - came to see the show. That’s a real Broadway thing too. You’re working on your next book. How is it going? It’s my favourite thing to do. I shall be at it during the days on tour. Don’t want to say much about it yet but it’ll be in the same world as ‘Happy’. It won’t be out any time soon though. Finally, ‘Sacrifice’ on Netflix was your last TV show. Can we expect to see you back on the small screen any time soon? I haven’t had a moment for TV! We’ve got a good idea for the next one though, so once I know my plans and have an opportunity, I’m sure we’ll get cracking. The Voice S6 labourer Adam Howarth has been given a new lease of life following an impressive performance on ITV’s The Voice.

Adam Howarth
Adam Howarth, known in the music scene just as Howarth, is a born and bred Hillsborough lad who has been gigging around the city since the tender age of 14. Now 27 and with revitalised ambitions, he appeared earlier this year on The Voice UK performing an original single ‘Losing Man’ in the competition’s blind auditions. Despite not progressing any further in the competition, his performance on the ITV primetime show has boosted his music career and gained him some new fans, leading to a re-release of his debut single online and a new lease of musical life, as Eloise Feilden found out last month.
So how did it feel then, having them not turn around and then having Olly Murs go on Twitter and say he regretted it? It were surreal that. Obviously I were gutted that they didn’t turn around, but it were my own fault. If I’d have sang perfectly I think there were more chance of me getting a turn but who knows. I’ve supported some massive acts – Catfish and the Bottlemen, Steve Craddock from Ocean Colour Scene, I went on tour with ELO. They were just like me and now they’re doing arena tours. Same old story innit – always the bridesmaid never the bride!
So you’ve just released your debut single ‘Losing Man’. What’s the reaction been like so far? It’s gone down really well. So far I’m looking at over 1600 streams in the first couple of weeks so I’m pretty happy. Obviously I wouldn’t mind it being more like tens of thousands but you can’t win them all! But it’s had great feedback, loads of people sharing it, and then I had the wonderful pleasure of going to Bramall Lane where they played it on the big screen at Sheffield United at half time.
You’ve been playing music both as a solo artist and in bands around Sheffield since you were in your early teens. What are you thoughts on how the scene has shifted and changed? I don’t think the music scene is as good as it used to be. That’s really controversial, innit? But then again I don’t really go out and watch that many gigs anymore because a load of venues have gone. I used to like going to Boardwalk to watch a gig when atmosphere were great and people still used to smoke in the back room. When I first started you played at Boardwalk and if you were good enough you got offered somewhere like Plug, and if you were good enough there you got offered Leadmill and if you were really good you got offered O2. But then it all changed, and I suppose the thing I could do without is promoters not doing their job right. Nowadays what promoters do is book a venue and then make you sell all the tickets.
How important is it to you that people in Sheffield and your local community like your music and support what you’re doing? Well it’s massive, innit? It’s like winning on home soil in a sense. I were having this conversation with someone last night about how Sheffield seems to get missed out a lot and I think it’s a travesty. When you see these big television shows like your X Factors and all that, they always go to Manchester and bypass Sheffield and when you look back, Sheffield’s dominated music for like five decades. I mean, if you look at one of the biggest selling bands over the last 20 years it’s the Arctic Monkeys from Sheffield. Look at 1980s to 1990s and you’ve got countless amounts of acts and artists that are just topping charts. You first performed the single on the Voice UK. Do you get sick of always being associated with the show at the moment or are you grateful that it’s given you the kind of recognition that you’ve been wanting? It’s given me a much bigger platform to approach. In the first week my page on Facebook went up over 1000 likes, so yeah I’m really grateful for it. It’s given me this opportunity that I’ve got now to release this single and just keep going with it. It’s a pretty big one when it’s ITV primetime. How did it feel being a part of that and not getting the response that you wanted off the judges? It’s quite a long-winded process believe it or not. It’s actually down to the last 96 by the live audition stage. So in a sense I beat like 19,900 people. Some of the people who are currently on the show I still talk to them. They all messaged me thanking me for what I were like with them because I was just supportive of everyone. I think they took to my northern sort of ways. Little things like holding a door for someone. They were looking at me as if to say ‘What’s this? Someone’s being nice? I can’t believe it.’
Would you ever move out of Sheffield if your career really took off? I couldn’t do it. Everything’s here in Sheffield for me, I don’t need owt else. Don’t need nowhere else. My family’s here. There’s nothing I need anywhere else and I love it in Sheffield. Everything about it. I’ve always said I’d never move out. It’s the greatest city on earth. And to top it off you’ve got Henderson’s Relish. Winning. You should write a song about that. I might have to. Or some poetry. And you mentioned you were working on a follow up to your single? Yeah. Hopefully one day I’ll have an album out. I’ve got loads of songs, but I’ve got to make sure it’s good enough to follow up ‘Losing Man’. So I’m tweaking and working on it, working with the same bloke I did ‘Losing Man’ with, Ross Hooley. You have more than 80 volunteers and a manager in Chris Hardy who looks after the S6 Foodbank as a whole, including its different venues in Crookes, Broomhall and Penistone Road. You then have the people who show up every week to donate their food to the people who are desperate for it. One in five in this country live below the poverty line. What happens when all of this stops? What happens when a pandemic occurs and everywhere closes, people are quarantining themselves - volunteers and those who need help. What happens when supermarkets are raided for, quite frankly, the needs of the utterly selfish and deplorable people in this country? To combat the outbreak of the Coronavirus and to keep the spread of the disease to a minimum, the S6 Foodbank are offering a takeaway bag service which still serves the community but this is only really half of the function of the food bank. Speaking to us back in January, Chris told us: “The important thing is people can come and sit at a table, have a chat and have a tea or coffee.

“A lot of people we see are quite isolated and don’t tend to talk to people. We have a chat with them whilst we’re packing their food for them. We don’t have any food parcels pre-packed; it’s all about their dignity. We try to make the food parcels fit their diets and needs. Some people, if they aren’t from this country, don’t like certain foods so we try to make it fit their diet as best we can.” This has had to be reduced, understandably, given the circumstances of the pandemic. But with a section of the general public panic buying and stockpiling important products, there is a real chance that the food banks could run dry. That is a devastating outcome, brought on entirely by greed. But one we can still overturn. There’s always light within the gloom though, with the S6 Foodbank having received lots of messages of support over the last few weeks. “It’s been truly heartwarming to receive so many messages of support and offers to help from people and businesses across the city over the past 10 days,” they said on their Facebook page. “Our key items for donation are tinned tomatoes and long life fruit juice - donations via Tesco Infirmary Road, or dropped at the door with us on Fridays and Tuesdays between 9am and 1pm. State Of The Art Specsavers Fox Valley opticians invest s £50kinnew technology
Specsavers in Fox Valley has invested £50,000 in 3D scanning technology, which allows optometrists to view the eye in more detail than ever before. The Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) machine, which will be available from this month for appointments, is a cutting-edge piece of equipment, usually found in hospital eye departments. It is used for a variety of functions including screening and management of conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. The technology produces a structural scan of the eye, including layers of the eye that would not normally be visible using traditional eye testing techniques. The results are similar to an ultrasound or MRI scan, in that it creates multiple scan slice images that are built up to form a total image. The OCT machine uses a totally safe, laser light source and not x-ray-type radiation.
Fox Valley’s retail director, Hitesh Patel, said: “This investment gives our team the ability to enhance the services to the local community by identifying and helping to detect or manage conditions, with a level of diagnostic capability which previously would have needed a hospital visit. “OCT technology produces such a detailed picture of the structures in the eye that it allows us to identify signs of diseases years earlier than traditional methods. An example of this is glaucoma, which the store’s specialists are trained to spot. Given that nearly half of all sight loss is preventable, the sooner we can detect these conditions, the sooner we can help manage them or refer people for treatment.” The scan will be in addition to a thorough eye test, during which the optometrist
will use a range of clinical tests and procedures to measure the quality of someone’s vision, as well as taking an overview of the health and function of their eyes and how they work together. The OCT scan takes just a few seconds and is non-contact and painless. A customer’s OCT images will be stored on file so we can help note changes over time – a real benefit to the monitoring of someone’s overall eye health. Sky’s the limit! 5 things that could be coming to Sheffield’s Ski Village Sheffield city council has provisionally agreed a grant of more than £300,000 for Skyline, a New Zealand-based extreme activity company that is expected to form part of a revamped Parkwood Springs leisure complex, home to the former Ski Village. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, cabinet member for business and investment at Sheffield City Council, said “Sheffield has become a destination for inward investment in recent years, with global companies such as McLaren Automotive, Boeing and many other smaller businesses choosing to base themselves in the region. “This is partly because we have a unique and distinctive offer as The Outdoor City, which gives us the edge in terms of quality of life and is something that Skyline will complement perfectly. I’m looking forward to working with them further to bring another exciting new venture to our vibrant city.” Skyline’s New Zealand venues feature an uphill gondola ride and downhill luge tracks. Skyline also offers walking tracks, mountain biking trails, cultural experiences and adventure activities. Here’s five things that could be in the pipeline for the renovated Ski Village…

BIKING Once you’ve braved the Gondola ride, there could well be a faster route back down. One of Skyline’s specialities is the downhill mountain biking track and we’re hopeful they will be bringing their 12km circuit to the Steel City in the future.
