Million pound arena investment

Our pick of the social media pages you should be following

Major investment in FlyDSA Arena announced Over £1.5m investment has been announced for the FlyDSA Arena to guarantee that the venue continues to play a crucial role in promoting Sheffield across the country. The FlyDSA Arena will see major infrastructure development including a new ice plant, electrical works, dressing room refurbishment and further improvements in its counter terrorism measures. Working closely with Sheffield city council, Sheffield City Trust, the not-for-profit organisation that operates the FlyDSA Arena, reinvests all profits back into its facilities and services, benefitting the city of Sheffield. Home to the Sheffield Steelers, the new ice-plant will be installed during the ice hockey close season, ready for the start of the 2020/21 season in August. Replacing the original 30-year old equipment underlines Sheffield City Trust’s commitment to sustainability. The new equipment and associated electrical work will provide a more environmentally-friendly, efficient performance; reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions as well as providing better quality ice for ice-hockey and touring shows, such as Disney on Ice.

This investment comes following news that the FlyDSA Arena is in the Top 100 Arenas worldwide. Industry publication Pollstar released figures for 2019 showing the FlyDSA Arena is the 65th busiest Arena in the World and 7th busiest in the UK. Head of SIVLive Dominic Stokes said: “The history and heritage of this amazing venue is what makes it so special. With the support of Sheffield city council, the investment in the FlyDSA Arena will ensure it remains one of the best multi-functional spaces in the region, promoting our great city and supporting Sheffield City Trust’s aim of improving the health and wellbeing of the people of Sheffield. “The Sheffield Steelers have been a revelation this year with fantastic performances on the ice and phenomenal support and attendances from the fans. Investing in our infrastructure ensures our back of house experience continues to improve for promoters, acts and event organisers ensuring Sheffield remains at the forefront of the industry.”

Full Monty venue saved from demolition

Campaign launched to save Full Monty’s Shiregreen Working Men’s Club Thousands of Sheffielders have signed a petition to prevent the demolition of the famous Shiregreen Working Men’s Club, as made famous by the classic film Full Monty. A planning application was submitted to the council by Rotherham-based Eyre Investments and is proposing to use the land to build accommodation and other housing developments. The club, which has been closed since 2018, was made famous when it appeared in the 1997 film the Full Monty and subsequently became a tourist destination following the film’s global success. The council subsequently denied the request. Sally Dale, who has launched the petition, said: “The owner is willing to open the lounge as a public BUT for the community to take the large room. Surely the community want to save this iconic 100 year old “Full Monty” club. Help save this club from being

demolished and who knows what being built on the site. Please sign and share this petition, we need as many signatures as possible to take to the council and stop any demolition.” The petition has more than 1,400 signatures at the time of writing, with some sharing their memories of the iconic club. Lesie Davidson writes: “I spent many hours in Shiregreen Club, not all of them happy, and not all of them remembered. Apart from it’s cultural significance, which does not need to be mentioned here as it is already noted, it has been a meeting place for friends, neighbours, and family for as long as I’ve known it. This is the the purpose it should be continuing, as a hub for the neighbourhood to socialise in. I am sure that some enterprising groups or individuals can make it a going concern without ripping it down and chucking up a block of flats.”

Spaced Out The home of Tramlines, Farmers Blonde and some of Yorkshire’s most beautiful scenery, there’s more to North Sheffield than meets the eye. Have you got an interesting historical fact that NorthBound readers need to know? Email paul@ northboundmagazine.co.uk

Helen Patricia Sharman OBE FRSC is a chemist from Grenoside who became the first Briton in space, and the first woman to visit the Mir space station in 1991. She began her education at Meadowhead School, later receiving a BSc in chemistry at the University of Sheffield in 1984 and a PhD from Birkbeck, University of London. Her involvement in space travel began when she responded to a radio advertisement calling for applicants to become the first British astronaut. Helen beat out 13,000 other applicants following a rigorous selection process thanks to her veritable

brains. She then spent 18 months in intensive flight training at Moscow’s once highly secretive Star City facilities, home to its own mini city for cosmonaut personnel only. Sharman’s mission launched on 18 May 1991, lasting eight days, with her tasks including medical and agricultural tests, photographing the British Isles, and participating in an amateur radio hook-up with British schoolchildren. Helen was just 27 years old when she went into space, making her the fifth youngest of the 528 individuals who have flown in space. No biggy.

Plansin for a Ninja Warrior adventure parkin Sheffield

An old Toys R Us store in Sheffield could be redeveloped as a venue based on the ITV show Ninja Warrior under new plans submitted to the council this month. Lambert Smith Hampton (LSH), on behalf of FI Real Estate Management, has submitted an application for a unit at Meadowhall Retail Park to be changing into an indoor adventure park, feturing a range of courses inspired by the popular ITV show. According to the application, an estimated figure of 100,000 people would visit the venue per year with 25 full and part-time jobs being created in the process. ITV and Ninja Warrior UK have opened adventure parks in Gloucester, Stoke-on-Trent, Wigan and Cardiff so far.

Fabian Cruz LOCAL HEROes

FabianCruzor‘Chicken man’asheisalso affectionatelyknown, has spentadecade running in a distinctivecostume, raisingthousands of poundstosupport Sheffield Children’sHospital in the process.

22 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

He has conquered several half marathons and countless 10k races around the region. But it is his feathery outfit that makes him one of the most recognisable faces on race days. 54-year-old Fabian, who works as a chef in Sheffield, started running in the costume to show solidarity with his homeland Chile in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake and tsunami. Fabian explains: “I had decided to run for The Children’s Hospital Charity, but I wanted to show my support for Chile too as I was born there. I tried to think of a superhero from my childhood, but all I could remember was a chicken advert. So, chicken man or ‘superpollo’ was born.”

NEWS

“I was really grateful for everything the hospital did and decided to try to make a difference. It’s difficult to know for sure, but I’d estimate that I’ve raised around £30,000 since I started running. I’d like to think that maybe over the years I’ve helped someone at the hospital.” For the past four years, Fabian has run alongside 25-year-old Stuart Bastidas, the son of one of his friends from Chile who moved to Sheffield to study. He has continued the chicken theme, dubbing himself super ‘pollito’ or little chick.

"Ilovehearing peopleshout‘go chickenman!’" Stuart said: “I have known Fabian since I was around five, but we didn’t see him very often as we were based in London. I had heard through Facebook groups that there was a Chilean running in Sheffield dressed as a chicken with the national flag on his back. I later learned that it was Fabian and I went to his restaurant to ask if he was running the 10K that year and if he needed a hand with his fundraising. The rest is history. “I couldn’t be prouder of him. His drive to raise money for a cause that means so much to him really shows and he’s become a legend in the local Latin American community here. I’ve also seen the impact Sheffield Children’s has on the local community, so I could not be happier to fundraise for a great cause.” Combining a chicken suit with the Chilean flag as a cape and a bandana, Fabian admits to being unsure about the outfit first time around: “I wasn’t convinced but the support I had was great. It is very hot and quite difficult to run in, but the reaction is worth it. I love hearing people shout ‘go chicken man!’" For Fabian, supporting Sheffield Children’s Hospital is also a deeply personal cause: “I made a promise to keep running for as long as I can in memory of my son and daughter who sadly passed away in 1986 and 1987. I saw first-hand what the staff at Sheffield Children’s Hospital do to try and save a life and the equipment that it takes.

"I tried to think of a superhero from my childhood, but all I could remember was a chicken advert. So, chicken man or ‘superpollo’ was born"

Rachael Thomas, events fundraising officer at The Children’s Hospital Charity added: “Fabian is always one of the first to sign-up for our running events every year and often challenges his friends to join him, but it is his costume that he is most well-known for. “I’ve no idea how he manages dressing up every year, but he’s an inspiration to us all. Fabian and Stuart’s unwavering support has and will continue to the lives of our young patients at Sheffield Children’s Hospital for generations to come.” Places are still available with The Children’s Hospital Charity at this year’s Sheffield Half Marathon on Sunday 29th March. Head over to tchc.org.uk for more information.

LOCAL HEROes

Tonight, the suits are ours! Sheffield legend Richard Hawley has auctioned off two iconic suits for local charity Two iconic suits worn by legendary Pitsmoor crooner Richard Hawley on the covers for his hit albums Coles Corner and Lady’s Bridge have helped raise more than £5,000 for St Luke’s Hospice. The suits were auctioned as part of Music Against Cancer, a series of musical events hosted by the Greystones pub in Sheffield which were raising money for St Luke’s alongside Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity and Cancer Research UK. Organiser Mike Pidgeon launched the campaign after he himself was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in 2017. The auction

saw Richard Hawley himself hand over the suits and signed copies of both albums to the highest bidders. The winner of the Lady’s Bridge suit was Spanish journalist Joan Losilla, whilst the Coles Corner suit was bought by Thornbridge Brewery on behalf of the Greystones pub, who now plan to get the suit framed and displayed in the pub. Mike said of the auction: “During 2019 I’ve been helped by many friends, many of them musicians, in raising money for cancer support charities through a series of wonderful gigs in the backroom at the

Greystones. “After my own battle with oesophageal cancer, I decided to help raise funds to support those who helped me through this difficult time and continue to help others in a similar position and more than £11,000 has been raised so far this year. “I was delighted when my good friend and musical legend Richard Hawley donated two wonderful and personal items from his musical past to help increase the overall funds even further.” stlukeshospice.org.uk

Sheffield Kitchen Outlet is one of the city’s best manufacturers of high quality kitchen and bedroom furniture Sheffield Kitchen Outlet began life at Carlisle Street in Sheffield over 15 years ago and has built a company around a skilled workforce of more than 80 local employees and contractors. Choice and quality is at the heart of what they do, with their expert designers on hand to survey your home and draw up a design brief before heading back to the extensive showroom to hand-pick accessories, layouts and finalising the little details that make SKO’s service standout. The business is ran by brothers Stuart and Daniel Hattersley, who head up the company’s four showrooms from their Hillsborough office. The company, Stuart tells us, has just invested £1.5 million into a new state-of-the-art facility in Wincobank, allowing SKO to expand their operations even further whilst creating jobs in the local area. “The facility has state-of-the-art equipment and it’s an important moment for us,” Stuart added. “We do good quality kitchens and bedrooms for the best price we can. There’s no sales tactics here, we don’t push anything onto people and we don’t mess about. It’s no-nonsense stuff, and our work sells itself. Our sales team have worked here a long time and are very knowledgeable, everyone knows their stuff.” It’s something that Stuart prides himself, and his company on. The relaxed no-pressure sales policy, guarantees nothing more than good, honest advice, with plenty of time to make any decisions - without feeling rushed. Each stage of the manufacturing process is tracked using the latest technology, meaning the order is tracked in real-time from the starting point to the finishing line. Looking for a new kitchen or bedroom? Sheffield Kitchen Outlet offers a top quality service for a quality price. Head over to their North Sheffield showroom on Rawson Spring Road, and if you like what you see, the trade counter is a short two minute walk over on Rawson Spring Way. sheffieldkitchenoutlet.com // Rawson Spring Road, S6 1PD 28 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

IN BLOOM Now’sthetimeto get crackingwith your garden! Here’sfive tips to makesureyouryard will blossomthisspring… TIDY YOUR BORDERS Before doing anything, an idea to get you into the swing things is to have a general tidy up and get rid of any leaves and debris from flower beds and borders leaving bare soil. Dispose of any weeds you can see instead of composting them as the seeds will germinate and cause you more problems later on. Before you start the next step, dig a 5cm layer of compost.

START PLANTING NOW It’s an easy mistake to make to think that the best time to start planting is in May, just before the summer. In actual fact, you can start much earlier than that. At this time of year you could add plants such as tulips for a nice bit of colour in your garden. If you prefer something a little different then you can chuck in some vegetables like lettuce or peas. Starting now will ensure your garden will be flourishing within two months.

30 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

SORT YOUR LAWN Your lawn will have been neglected over the winter months, the poor old chap. Now’s the time to blow the dust of the mower and give it some much needed TLC. Begin with the blades lower for a shorter cut to make sure the grass stays sturdy and grows out healthy. If you’re starting out with a new lawn, now’s the time to sow grow seedlings or lay turf. PRUNE THE SHRUBS Remove dead, damaged, and diseased branches from plants or shrubbery. You can cut back the old dead growth of deciduous grasses and herbaceous perennials now, although, if you’d like to be wildlife friendly, it’s best to leave these until early spring. SUITSYOU! Last month Northbound paid a visit to Vanda and Faye at The Suit Works, a charitable organisation supporting unemployed people of all ages by providing free smart clothing for job interviews along with a personal styling session. How did The Suit Works first come about? Vanda: To be as brief as possible, I had been made redundant again, and it gave me the opportunity to take a bit of time out, to think about what I was going to do next. During this time I volunteered at Suited & Booted in London, which is a similar venture, and I thought it was a fantastic, simple model that really has a big impact. So, I came back to Sheffield, talked to various friends and as these things do, the universe just conspired and it started to come together.

PHOTO: @MARCABARKERPHOTOGRAPHY

What were the main steps after that? Vanda: There’s an organisation called CIQ Agency, who are architects and social entrepreneurs and they offered me a space free of charge to work out of. People started donating stuff, but I had no money, I was on benefits basically. Five years ago I applied for Sheffield Soup, the local crowdfunder, and won £640 in funding, so it built gradually from there and I loved it. I was passionate about it and it was helping people, so I just did lots of networking and plenty of people got behind it because it’s a good simple concept. We went from around 70 clients in the first year to 178 last year. How do clients find out about it? Is it word of mouth? Vanda: They can’t just drop in; they have to have a referral. So generally, they’re referred through other agencies. I’ve just been doing the stats for last year and about 33% come through job centres, about 20% through Sheffield City Council and the rest through local organisations, charities and training agencies. When did Faye join the team? Vanda: After having done it for a while, whenever I went anywhere to give a talk or a presentation about the service people would always say the same thing: “What about women? Why just men?” There were lots of reasons for that, the main one being I was part of a small group and I had a lot of experience styling men in the past so it was much more straightforward. But last year,

I felt like we’d got the model under wraps and knew what we were doing. We had funding in place and had the experience to develop the project and then one of my trustees introduced me to Faye. I’ll let her take it from here. Faye: I had a background within the NHS and left a couple of years ago. Similarly to Vanda, I had the opportunity to leave so I took some time out. I got involved in the charity sector, which is very appealing to me, and then we met through Cheryl, and this brings together Cheryl and one of my oldest friends who is also a trustee who told me: “You’re going to love this place.” What do you enjoy about the work? Faye: It brings together everything for me. My background is around engagement, events, and governance, and specifically working with vulnerable people, especially vulnerable women. It brings all of that together with the fashion element of it too. I told Vanda that if Suit Works was every going to launch for women I really wanted to be part of it. I came onboard at the beginning of last year, we started putting a plan together, and in August we launched

HOW TO DONATE: The Suit Works need donations of business wear and accessories (in good condition!) for both men and women. At the moment they are particularly short on small and large men’s sizes!

These can be dropped off at:  Unit 37, New Mesters, 53 Mowbray St, Sheffield. S3 8EN (Mon-Fri, 9.30-4.30)  Goodman Sparks Dry Cleaners on Ecclesall Road or Meadowhead (they will clean and deliver free of charge).  If none of these work for you call on 07468 464776

34 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

for women as well, along with a bit of a general re-launch and new premises. Vanda: We’re still sort of in our pilot phase for the women’s side of things, so we’re sort of seeing how that goes. I suppose we just want to be completely gender neutral really. But there are differences in how you work with the clients and their needs, so we’re kind of still exploring that and staying open to help and how it might develop as a service. What are the main challenges that you’re up against? Vanda: Of course, funding is the main issue. We have a small contract with Sheffield City Council and we would not be here without them. They’ve been fantastic. We’ve applied for some grants and we’ve had quite a few donations, so we now have a reasonably well-developed board of trustees, a threeyear business plan and a funding strategy. Basically, I’ve got to crack on with it! We’re looking at developing a corporate strategy on the side and hopefully some sort of trading wing to support the business. That will hopefully relieve it from the constraints of having apply to bid for stuff every year. What’s a typical day look like at Suit Works? Faye: It varies greatly! I suppose a regular day would be coming in and having loads of donations left for us to sort; we’ll see if anything need cleaning, store things away, or forward things on to other charities if we can’t keep them. Each session lasts an hour with a client, so if it’s a guy, he’ll come in and be measured up, we’ll have a quick chat with him, try and get a feel for what his style is or what he needs it for. We don’t like to force anything on anyone, we like to bring out their personality naturally, so we have a bit of time with them. It’s very similar for women - a relaxed, informal chat to begin with, just to break the ice really. By the end of their session you see the change; when they see themselves in the mirror with the right outfit you can often see that confidence and how they’re really ready for their interview.

AREA GUIDE: BRADFIELD

Bradfield In most of our issues, we make an excuse to cover the area in some way shape or form, whether that’s a trip up to Watt House Farm to see the folks at Bradfield Brewery, taking a relaxing walk around one of the area’s picturesque reservoirs or visiting Our Cow Molly in neighbouring Dungworth. Whatever it is, each trip to Bradfield reaffirms our belief that it is truly one of the UK’s most stunning areas – and it’s right on our doorstep! Truth be told, no amount of photography or editorial can justify the beauty of Bradfield. However, we’re going to have a right go over the next four pages. So kick back, stick the kettle on and fall in love with Bradfield, Storrs and Dungworth… Paul Stimpson, Editor.

MALCOLM NUNN – LOCAL HISTORIAN Bradfield Parish’s archivist and head honcho of the Bradfield Historical Society discusses his favourite spots in the area… "It started at an early age when I was told that one of my ancestors, William Horsfield discovered the crack in Dale Dyke reservoir in 1864 which caused The Great Sheffield Flood which claimed the lives of over 300 people. I’m fascinated by the story and have traced the Horsfield's in Bradfield over 400 years, many of whom are interred in the churchyard at Bradfield St. Nicholas. “Bradfield Parish is the largest Civil Parish in the country landwise although not in population, its boundary is some 54 miles in total. I have been asked on a number of occasions which is my favourite place or walk in

the Parish, this is hard to choose as they vary so much, but I suppose if I had to choose one it would be High Bradfield with stunning views up Bradfield Dale and down the Loxley Valley. My favourite walk would be from High Bradfield via Rocher Rocks and back via the Agden Valley.”

Bradfield

Parish Council

Chairman’s

Welcome The start of the new decade began similarly to how the previous decade ended, very busily. We welcomed Parish Cllr Miriam Cates MP to our Parish offices on 17th January for a meeting with myself, Stocksbridge Mayor Cllr Catherine Ward, Teresa and Pam from the office and the Northbound Magazine staff. We were able to agree regular meetings with Miriam and the Chairs of the three parishes to discuss local issues. The magazine editor interviewed Miriam and had an article and Q&A in their last issue, and over the page we have a few lines regarding Cllr Miriam Cates MP. We have already arranged our first meeting of the three Parish chairs and Miriam for 6th March, these three Parishes cover a significant proportion of the constituency of Penistone & Stocksbridge. 75 years ago, World War II ended when the allies accepted the unconditional surrender of the forces of Nazi Germany. In 2020, the May Day holiday (usually the first Monday in May) has been changed to Friday 8th May to celebrate the 75th anniversary of this historic moment in our nation and the world’s history. We will be commemorating this anniversary and there are several ideas under consideration. We will publicise details via Facebook and on our website. Another anniversary we have just had was that of the Great Sheffield Flood on March 11th 1864. This is usually commemorated by walks, talks and exhibitions by local historians. To continue with our items of interest articles, I have asked our archivist Malcolm Nunn to pen a few lines and show some of his photographs regarding this tragedy. You will find Malcolm’s article over the page. At the beginning of February we met with Dr David Clark from Sheffield Hallam University who

specialises in local legends and Sensoria, a media company who will be coordinating the 'legend' of Robin Hood (Robin of Loxley, The Loxley Outlaw). There are so many threads to understanding where the legends originated and how they developed. This new initiative will be trying to bring all these various stories together. The end of May will bring a celebration event at Loxley Quarry where all parties will expand on their own threads of their legends. Mr Dan Eaton from Loxley School has spent many months exploring the archaeological evidence around the woodland area of Loxley School. His findings will be included within the book Sensoria are creating, explaining how the legend of the outlaw originated. Our very first ‘Item of Interest’ in the first newsletter from the new council back in 2019, was celebrating ‘The Riddle of Robin of Loxley’. We had for many years a proliferation of red telephone boxes around the Parish. These boxes have gradually been removed as their relevance to 21st century communications diminished. However, in some locations these boxes were imaginatively converted to other uses, with one in Oughtibridge now successfully serving as a lending library. We also have some old brick sided bus shelters within this historical Parish. Loxley School has one situated outside its main gates, which is a little dismal and sad looking. The idea, which Bradfield Parish Council welcomed as a great improvement, was to decorate this bus shelter and tie it in with the rural charms of Loxley. This is a pilot project, so watch this space.

It is coming near to the time of our AGM. Here we also celebrate our Citizenship awards. Good citizens are role models, ones who significantly improve the quality of life for their neighbours and all within their area. These outstanding people deserve to be recognised and nominated for our awards. Over the years we have celebrated some really special people who have gone the extra mile for their village improvements, tidy ups, spring cleans and special projects. So if you know of such a person or group, please nominate them by contacting the Parish Council office.

Chairman Councillor Stephen Bennett Bradfield Parish Council, Mill Lee Rd, Low Bradfield, Sheffield, S6 6LB t: 0114 285 1375 // www.bradfield-yorks-pc.gov.uk // admin@bradfield-yorks-pc.gov.uk

The Great Sheffield Flood The Great Sheffield Flood occurred just before midnight on March 11th 1864 when the newly constructed Dale Dyke reservoir above Low Bradfield burst causing some seven hundred million gallons of water to go down the Loxley Valley at around twenty miles per hour and up to sixty feet deep in places causing the loss of two hundred and fourty people on the night, research has since found around another sixty died as a result of contracting illness in the weeks and months following the flood. The crack in the reservoir embankment was first discovered by William Horsfield who was on his way home from his quarry on the opposite side of the valley from where he worked. Prior to the reservoir being constructed he would have gone down into the valley bottom and up the other side but this was not possible once the reservoir started filling and his only option was to use the new embankment to cross, at first he thought it frost crack or a settlement crack but water was seeping through so he alerted Stephen Fountain who was one of the site contractors there. William Horsfield along with Stephen Fountain and Thomas Hammerton went to inspect the crack by which time had increased to the size of a knife blade. They went to Fountain’s home and his son Stephenson Fountain was despatched to report the matter to John Gunson, the Chief Engineer of Sheffield Waterworks Company who lived on Division Street, Sheffield. It is said that young Fountain rode his horse so fast that the saddle girth strap on his horse broke and had to have repairs done in Damflask village, whilst waiting he told villagers of the imminent danger and then went on his way to Sheffield. The first fatality of the flood was a two day old baby swept from its mothers arms whilst trying to escape from the cottages in Low Bradfield. The largest number of lives were lost in the Malin Bridge area where ninety five lost their lives - it is thought that there were 163 living at Malin Bridge at the time. The General Cemetery in Sharrow, Sheffield is where the majority of the victims are buried although a number are buried in chapel and church graveyards along the route. Dale Dyke reservoir was the first of three reservoirs in the Bradfield area to be constructed, Agden was in the process of being built and Damflask was only at the planning stage and all work had to be halted until the enquiry into the disaster

was completed, resulting in a complete rethink on how reservoir embankments should be constructed. When Dale Dyke reservoir was finally completed, the new embankment was built some two hundred yards inside the old reservoir, knocking around a third of the previous capacity off and resulting in the difference being absorbed by the construction of Strines reservoir as a 'top up' for Dale Dyke. There are four stones marked C.L.O.B. which marks the centre line of original bank at Dale Dyke. The largest loss of life in one family was the Armitage family from Stag Inn and cottages at Malin Bridge numbered twelve. They are all interred at Loxley Chapel graveyard in one big grave apart from two who were never found but their names are on the headstone with a note that they were assumed to be lost in the flood. One of the sons of the Chapman family from Little Matlock died in the flood and his body was found almost in Conisborough, some seventeen miles from his home. Again, he and his family are all buried in Loxley Chapel graveyard and although I know the grave location, there is no family headstone. It was fortunate that photography as we now know it was only introduced a couple of years before the disaster so most of the devastation was captured by the new method and photographers from all parts of the country descended on the area to test out their equipment. Every year local historians and enthusiasts mark the occasion with walks, talks and sometimes exhibitions of artefacts. This year’s walks take place as follows: ∙ Wednesday March 11th starting from Low Bradfield car park at 10-30am to Dale Dyke and return around 1-00pm ∙ Thursday March 12th starting from Malin Bridge Supertram Terminus at 10-30am going up the Loxley Valley and finishing around 1-00pm at Damflask reservoir embankment.

Miriam has been a major contributor on Parish Council business since she was first elected in 2015, always proactive and always bringing pertinent considered views across all Parish business. On Friday 17th January, Miriam Cates MP visited Bradfield Parish Council offices and met with Chair of the Parish Council Cllr Stephen Bennett, and Chair and Mayor of Stocksbridge Town Council Cllr.

Catherine Ward, together with the Clerk of Bradfield and Stocksbridge Teresa Bisatt and the Assistant Clerk at Bradfield Pam Burgoyne. Cllr Bennett stated he was delighted to welcome Miriam back to the Parish Council offices and very pleased that Miriam had decided to continue as Parish Councillor. Miriam maintains that her new responsibility as constituency MP must also continue with active involvement at local level and a meeting has already been arranged for the Chairmen of the three local Parish and Town Councils of Bradfield, Ecclesfield and Stocksbridge to meet with Miriam to discuss local issues. We all look forward to continuing to work with Miriam and send her our best wishes for her extended career as MP.

Reservoir Dogs

DOGFRIENDLYSHEFFIELD.CO.UK PICK OUT THREE RESERVOIR WALKS IN THE NORTH SHEFFIELD AREA WITH A FEW DOG-FRIENDLY SPOTS FOR YOU TO REST YOUR WEARY LEGS. The northern outskirts of Sheffield have plenty to offer dog owners. The vast open spaces of the Peak District boundary and beyond are an adventure playground. If you’re anything like me, you probably love to get out on a Sunday for a good walk with your dog, and a good feed! Personally, I love a reservoir walk. They’re always scenic, and for a navigation novice like me, they’re usually a circular route and easy to follow. Here I’ve picked out three of my favourites along with a dog-friendly spot to grab a drink when you’re done.

52 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

DAMFLASK RESERVOIR 3.8 mile circular walk, Roughly 2 hours Parking at: S6 6LB Damflask isn’t exactly a hidden gem, but it’s certainly a local favourite. This under 4-mile walk is relatively easy and ideal for most. The walk will take you along the edge of the reservoir and through woodland trails. The sprawling views of the reservoir offer up a great opportunity for an Instagram post, especially on a cool clear day.

DOG FRIENDLY SHEFF

Pawsforrefreshments After a walk around Damflask, you’ll no doubt have worked up a thirst and there are a number of nearby spots that you and your dog can enjoy a drink and some food.

OUR COW MOLLY

Ice Cream Parlour and Cafe, S6 6GW A working dairy farm serving up fresh super milk and ice cream to Sheffield. On their farm you can visit their ice cream parlour with your dog, and choose from a selection of flavoured ice cream. Take a seat on a bench and watch the world go by.

THE NAGS HEAD

Pub, S6 6SJ The Nags Head serves up reasonablypriced Farmers ales from Bradfield Brewery as well as hearty food (their pies are what Sunday’s are made for!), which makes it a great spot to rest your legs after a long walk. A cosy, comfortable and welcoming setting, they’ve even got a fire to get some of that blood circulating again after a winter walk.

As we turn on the heating or sit by a fire the flea is busy reproducing. Cats and Dogs in our warm houses provide the ideal breeding environment, infestation is rapid and very quickly our pets are suffering. The fleas will continue to reproduce in carpets and bedding. Pawsfor refreshments OLD HORNS INN

AGDEN RESERVOIR 2.5 mile circular walk Roughly 1.5 hours Parking at: S6 6LB If you park up at the Sands and fancy a shorter walk than the jaunt around Damflask, then its smaller sibling Agden reservoir is the ideal option. The walk does feature some on-road walking in parts so not advisable for excitable dogs (the roads are generally quiet). A gentle walk that will show off some fantastic views of Agden, finishing up with a woodland trail.

Pub, S66LG From the Agden walk, you can head up the Fairy Steps (Kirkgate steps) toward the church at High Bradfield, which is only a stone’s throw from the Old Horns Inn. On a clear day, and especially a summer day there are few better pubs in Sheffield. From the beer garden, you’ll be greeted by a fantastic vista over the Bradfield area that makes for ideal relaxation after a decent walk.

THE PLOUGH INN

Pub, S6 6HW The Plough sits between Damflask and Agden reservoir, helpfully nearby the advised parking spot. The Plough is a super welcoming local pub that offers up great food for weary walkers along with a good range of beers and drinks. Kids are also welcome too if you’re only a family walk.

DOG FRIENDLY SHEFF

LANGSETT RESERVOIR 3.5 mile walk Roughly 2.5 hours Parking at: S36 9FD A little further afield is a stunning walk around Langsett reservoir. There is an option for a longer walk of just over 5 miles on this route as well for those looking to spend a little more time on the trails. The terrain is largely on well-kept paths through woodland and moorland, there are some ascents so it may not be for everyone (but the views are worth it). There are stiles on this walk, so bear that in mind for your dog.

BANK VIEW CAFE Cafe S36 4GY The best way to judge a dog-friendly place is by how excited they are to have dogs visit them. I knew Bank View was going to be a great spot when Pete from Bank View emailed me telling me how dog-friendly they were. You may know the cafe as ‘the spotty cafe’ after its new paint job during the 2014 Tour De France. You’ll be given a warm welcome and plenty of great local info for walkers. There’s outdoor seating for warmer days, and they’ve got a fireplace inside for those cold winter walks. With its Tour De France credentials and location, it’s unsurprisingly a hit with cyclists and walkers alike.

TRAMLINES

Tramlines, Sheffield’s biggest city-based music festival has announced the lineup for its 2020 event, taking place at the 30,000 capacity Hillsborough Park from Friday 31st July to Sunday 2nd August. Headliners have been revealed as Ian Brown, Catfish and the Bottlemen, and Madness, with more than 25 acts also unveiled including The Kooks, DMA’s and Dizzee Rascal. With general weekend tickets already sold out Tramlines has for the first time released day tickets, five months ahead of the three-day event. They’re priced from £45 and can be purchased alongside other ticket options from tramlines.org.uk. Following its first ever sell out in 2019 and subsequently receiving the UK Festival Award for Best Metropolitan, Tramlines is certifiably one of the UK’s fastest growing festivals. It grew from humble beginnings in 2009 as a free, multi-venue, inner-city festival, to a single site in Hillsborough that stages the biggest names in pop, rock and indie across four stages of music, alongside the best in art, comedy, performance, handpicked food and craft ales. Headliners for the 12th instalment of Tramlines on ‘Sarah Nulty’s Main Stage’ are Stone Roses frontman, Ian Brown (Friday), indie-rockers Catfish and the Bottlemen (Saturday) – a band who first appeared at Tramlines many moons ago as an upcoming band on one of its smallest stages, and the UK’s favourite ska outfit, Madness (Sunday). Tramlines Festival operations director, Timm Cleasby told NorthBound: “I’m proper excited for us to bring this lineup to Sheffield - big names for Sheffield’s biggest party. Getting the F.E.A.R. with Ian Brown on Friday Night, right through to Sunday Madness, It Must Be Love. With some of Yorkshire’s finest bands too, I Hate To Say I Told You So, but it’s going to be Bonkers. See you in the park.”

TRAMLINES

The 2020 lineup for Tramlines is packed with some of the UK’s all-time rock and indie favourites. Appearing are ‘Chelsea Dagger’ indie swingers The Fratellis, the platinumselling The Pigeon Detectives, Twisted Wheel who formed at the heart of Manchester’s indie rock scene and were regularly seen supporting the likes of Oasis and this year’s Tramlines headliner himself, Ian Brown. Amongst a melting pot of sounds includes a return to Tramlines for grime MC, Dizzee Rascal, disco, goth-pop Pale Waves, the Mercury Prize nominated all-girl outfit, The Big Moon, and the eclectic sounds of Easy Life who return with their mash up of hip hop, RnB and jazz that wowed crowds on the Leadmill Stage at Tramlines last year. Over the years Tramlines has been known for offering a platform to some of the best new and emerging talent around. 2020 is no different and ‘ones to watch’ include rising Scottish fivepiece, The Snuts who’ll bring a catalogue of indie stompers, Reading quartet Sundara Karma, and hailing from Brighton, The Magic Gang and Fickle Friends who’ll deliver big melodies and progressive indie pop. As well as VIP weekend tickets costing £180 and day tickets costing £45 (Friday) and £50 (Saturday and Sunday), children’s ticket are also on sale. With a pass for 5 – 12-year olds costing just £10 and £3 for those aged 4 and under, Tramlines offers some of the best value festival tickets around. This is just the first wave of talent set to perform at Tramlines 2020. Festivalgoers should keep an eye out for further lineup announcements, plus further announcements from across the festival site including lineups for the comedy tent, programming for the eclectic family-friendly area ‘Into The Trees’, and the return of Speaker’s Corner.

HAVE A GANDER AT NORTHBOUND’S HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE FIRST LINEUP ANNOUNCEMENT.

IAN BROWN The Stone Roses frontman is back out on his own with some unfinished (monkey) business. The release of his first solo album in 9 years, Ripples, and the subsequent lead single ‘First World Problems’ promises a back to form era for the legendary Mancunian.

MADNESS Tramlines has a tendency to book some classic acts on Sunday, bringing an upbeat and soulful party vibe to S6 to close the festival. This year will be no different with ska legends Madness pumping out their greatest hits to finish off the weekend.

CATFISH AND THE BOTTLEMEN The indie band have a long-standing relationship with Tramlines, having been a regular feature of earlier iterations of the festival in the early 2010s. Their 2016 headline set felt like a homecoming show but this time around, Hillsborough Park will be hosting one of the most popular bands in the UK.

THE KOOKS Along with the Arctic Monkeys, the Kooks were poster boys of the 2000s indie explosion. Whilst the High Green lads have reached global heights, the Kooks have quietly and consistently been releasing excellent tunes ever since 2006’s Inside In / Inside Out came out.

THE BIG ONES (CONT) DMA’S The Aussie’s ode to British pop culture has seen the trio become a huge hit in the UK, with the likes of Liam Gallagher describing the band as “biblical” before inviting them to support him at his recent Fly DSA Arena show. If that support slot is anything to go by, we’re in for a real treat when the DMA’s head to Hillsborough Park this summer.

LA ROUX Fronted by Eleanor “Elly” Jackson, Grammy award-winning La Roux return to the live scene with a number of festival dates this summer in support of their first album in six years Supervision.

SISTER SLEDGE Disco purveyors Sister Sledge make their return to Tramlines after their glorious Sunday evening set in 2014. Sadly, they will be one sister short after Joni Sledge’s untimely passing in 2017 but Debbie and Kim Sledge will be ‘Lost In Music’ in S6 this summer.

THE HIVES One of the finest live bands of the last decade or so, the Hives’ reputation means the Swedish rockers will be a festival highlight for the ages.

THE BLINDERS You can expect an aggressive, grungy blitz through Doncaster band the Blinder’s first album Columbia, and a set of defiant punk rock from the three-piece.

AS EVER, THERE ARE SOME FANTASTIC LOCAL ACTS PLAYING THIS YEAR’S FESTIVAL. HERE’S A FEW OF OUR PICKS… EVERLY PREGNANT BROTHERS The Brothers manage to draw huge crowds whenever they play their home city and their success has seen them play festivals and gigs all over the country, serving up good music with a side of pork pie.

THE SHERLOCKS The gritty, no-nonsense, indie rockers have rocketed to success over the last few years. High on the bill for a multitude of festivals from Y Not to Kendal Calling and Boardmasters, the local lads return to Tramlines for what is sure to be stellar homecoming set.

SHEFFIELD MINIATURES

Sheffield Miniatures

MeetLeeSmithson -alocalelectronics engineerwhospends hiseveningscrafting themostincredible miniaturesofSheffield landmarks.

We were first aware of Sheffield Miniatures a couple of years ago when an incredible model of the Ecclesall Road restaurant Ashoka popped up on our social media feeds. The detail was incredible, and not just the brickwork and exterior. You could actually look through the windows and see the tables, chairs and décor of the real-life Ashoka – and it was done to a tee. A little digging into Sheffield Miniatures and it turns out Lee’s a local from Malin Bridge, who spends his spare time creating amazing models of Sheffield’s iconic pubs and buildings. Due to the positive reaction he’s had on social media and his displays in the Sheffield Makers shop, Lee’s had a lot of commissions from businesses and people which has turned this hobby into quite the interesting and popular sideline. We tracked Lee down and nipped to his workshop to find out a bit more about his work…

www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk | 69

HOW DID YOU GET INTO MAKING MINIATURES? Well, Dad is a builder so that got me into architecture. I have always been fascinated with detailed miniatures like model villages, houses, aircraft, cars and railways. The thing that always fascinated me was miniatures with such tiny details that would easily be missed if you hadn’t looked for them. Like looking through a tiny house window and seeing all the furniture, the books on the shelves, coal on the fire and rugs on the floor. As a child I used to enjoy making the plastic kits of aircraft and cars. I was always trying to incorporate more detail in to the basic kits. Then I started to try and weather the models for that bit of extra realism. SO THIS IS SOMETHING YOU DO ALONGSIDE YOUR USUAL 9-5 AS AN ELECTRONICS ENGINEER? Whenever the wife lets me! I’m not a person who can easily sit still and just watch TV, I prefer to be making something or doing something practical. As an adult I started making all sorts of miniature items in my shed just as a personal challenge to see what I could do with my very limited tools at hand. A lot of my techniques are learned from trial and error more than anything else and by researching the internet or books.

“The thing thatalways fascinated me wasminiatures with such tiny detailsthat would easily be missed if you hadn’t looked forthem.” THE DETAIL IS INCREDIBLE, ESPECIALLY THE TEXTURE OF THE BRICKS… I found that I could make very realistic looking brickwork from air drying clay and used this technique when I started making miniature buildings three years ago. The first example was my model of Shepherd Wheel which was much larger than my current examples, but the interest that was created from that model being displayed at Weston Park Museum for a year, inspired me to carry on making miniatures. WHERE DID THE IDEA TO DISPLAY THEM IN FRAMES COME FROM? I made a complete model of a row of houses of my mother and father inlaw’s house but the problem with these miniatures was that they are quite big and hard to display and keep clean. The solution came from my mum who has always been interested in various crafts, who suggested I should make just the façade of the buildings and place them in a box frame which has proved very popular so far, so I can’t even claim the best idea as my own!

Yes after making some box frame miniatures I managed to start selling them in the Sheffield Makers shop on Sharrowvale and it’s all developed from there really. I have a number of miniatures on display and for sale at the Crow Inn on Scotland Street and in Endcliffe Park Café. IS IT MOSTLY PUBS YOU MAKE MODELS OF? I mainly make Sheffield pubs and buildings, but I also get a lot of commission work from people who want either their business premises or a private property making. Although many of my previous projects have been Sheffield-based, I’m happy to try any building as long as I can get some good photos. I always pay a lot of attention to detail and I am always pleased to see my customers’ responses to the finished product as often the buildings I am asked to make have sentimental value to them.

“my favourite of those isthe Lyceum, again because ofthe lighting and realism. I’d say that was also one of the most difficultmodels todate.” DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MODEL? I think my personal favourite is one of the first pieces I made which was Park Hill flats, as when it is lit up it looks so realistic. The most difficult was again one of the first things I made which was the fully working Shepherd Wheel that was on display on Weston Park museum. Getting all the belts and drive wheels to work was a real challenge. As for the picture frame miniatures, my favourite of those is the Lyceum, again because of the lighting and realism. I’d say that was also one of the most difficult models to date. Head over to sheffieldminiatures.co.uk for more details on Lee’s work.

THECOCKINN On the pub’s first birthday, we thought we’d jot down five reasons to visit the Cock Inn in the picturesque village of Oughtibridge THE CHARACTER The Cock Inn is a cosy, characterful pub situated close to the river in the quaint little village of Oughtibridge. Located on Bridge Hill, the Cock is at the heart of the local community and there has been a pub on this site for over 200 years, so as you can probably imagine, it’s packed full of character from its attractive stone exterior to its warm, cosy interior – making the Cock a perfect boozer for both summer and winter nights. THE QUIZ NIGHTS The pub’s quiz night on a Tuesday is renowned locally, but the Cock Inn has also introduce a Wednesday quiz too with a more modern and interactive twist. KwizzBit is redefining the usual pub quiz, and you can sample that down at the Cock every Tuesday evening!

THE FOOD From the kitchen, you can enjoy a delicious seasonal menu in the warmth of the main room. The menu is absolutely huge, and doesn’t detract from the quality either. Whether it’s the Sunday roast, a burger from the Burger Bar or a steak from the grill, the Cock’s homely grub is fabled around these parts. THE BAR The Cock Inn offers a range of cask ales, lager, craft beer and cider alongside a wide selection of gins and a dedicated wine menu. Their eclectic mix of local ale and premium brands ensure that there’s a choice for everybody here.

THE SPORTS Sports fans are able to enjoy the biggest games on the pub’s HD screens, meaning that whether you’re an Owl, Blade or into the rugby, the Cock is one of the best spots to catch the biggest sporting events all year round.

A TASTE OF

YORKSHIRE Ayearafteropening atFoxValley,McGilveray’sbrandof simple food done wellhasgarneredquitethereputation around Sheffield. We madethetripuptoFoxValleytosee whatallthefusswasabout... In an ever-changing food industry, where restauranteurs and small independents are attempting to stand out from the crowd, it’s refreshing to see there’s still a place for a family-run restaurant that excels in its simplicity. We’re talking about McGilveray’s, of course. Located in Fox Valley, the husband and wife team of Alan and Wendy McGilveray opened the restaurant a year ago, realising a long-term ambition of theirs. Since opening the doors in 2019, they’ve brought a simple menu featuring some classic British dishes with a modern twist. “Our food is proper food - traditional food - done properly,” Alan tells us. “I’ve been in the industry so many years and worked at two AA rossette places and to me it’s great food but it’s too much of a faff. I think people are coming away from it. “I do a fish and chips and it’s fantastic, people rave about it. I don’t think you’ll get a better steak in Sheffield than the one we do here. I did some development work for Mitchell and Butler, who own Miller and Carter Steakhouse, and our steaks are better than theirs. You can put that in!” Speaking of Alan’s previous work, he’s had a lengthy career in the industry, more than two decades in fact, but the opening of his own restaurant has been a dream of his and Wendy’s for years. “We’ve always been looking for a place of our own, for many years, but it’s taking that leap of faith and we eventually did it and here we are – nearly a year later. “Before this I was executive chef for Marriot Hotels for 25 years so I’ve got plenty of experience in this industry,” Alan adds. “I went into food development and came up with a few ideas for a number of big companies so I know what works and what doesn’t.” 76 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

“Our foodis proper food -traditional food - done properly”

“We make really good fresh food. We can’t stress this enough - it’s a family-run business, an independent restaurant run by a family, and we care about it and care about our customers. If you were to look at TripAdvisor, how many five stars we get and how many positive comments we get, is fantastic.”

alongside the homemade tartar sauce. As for the vegan option, Alan’s spicy Moroccan mixed bean tagine was packed full of flavour, in particular the butternut squash alongside the apricot and sultana couscous. Both dishes were perfectly filling, too.

Since opening, McGilveray’s has developed a strong set of regular customers, some of which are in every morning for a coffee. This customer base sprang into action when someone posted a negative comment to the restaurant’s Facebook page regarding the price of its fish and chips. “Somebody had a little moan and we didn’t need to respond to them. All of our customers replied on our behalf and defended us because they know what we’re about. Yes, it’s £12.95 for fish and chips but you know what, it’s absolutely the best fish and chips around!”

Once we’d tucked into our food, Wendy popped over to say hello. “We’re about providing a service to the local people. We had some people come in from Manchester yesterday; they come from all over now. It’s really nice. We have a live singer and guitarist on the last Saturday of every month and we use that as a forum for local talent. We’re full every time – plus we don’t tend to push people out. If they’ve got a table it’s generally theirs for however long they want it.

This loyal following, along with the word-ofmouth reputation around Sheffield, has helped the restaurant through what would normally be a tough winter period. “Weather has its own little climate down here. You can have rain, sun and snow, and that’s all in one day!

“We had a customer say the other day ‘if Carlsberg did Sunday lunch, McGilveray’s would better it! Comments like that are just fantastic.” On this evidence, we’d find it very hard to disagree.

“Our customers are fantastic and we have a lot of regulars, which is great. Weekends are very good. We did 100 covers last Sunday and it was throwing it down outside. They came for the traditional Sunday roast, which everyone is raving about. Roast sirloin and beef and all the trimmings.” Just before midday, the restaurant is filling up nicely with punters filing in a mid-week lunch. This is Alan’s cue to return to the kitchen, and for us to try some of his signature dishes. First out, the famous fish and chips which, as Alan and Wendy forewarned us, had an incredibly tasty beer batter coated around it. The twice-cooked chips, another of the restaurant’s specialities, went down a treat

Trust in Mercedes The German car maker came out on top in a new trust survey

92 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

Mercedes-Benz is the UK’s most trusted car brand, according to the 2020 CarGurus Car Buyer Trust Index report, a first-of-its-kind study commissioned by online automotive marketplace CarGurus. The German car maker topped a list of 21 manufacturers that have been ranked as part of the inaugural CarGurus Car Buyer Trust Index, a new independent report that provides unprecedented insight into how perceived trust impacts decisionmaking among different genders and age groups. Audi, Ford, Toyota and Volvo completed the top five with Fiat recording the lowest overall brand ranking. Researchers at GlobalWebIndex asked 2,183 car-buyers to rank car makers on five key factors that build trust: integrity, transparency, genuineness, social conscience and reliability. This formulated the overall performance for each brand.

21 car makers were included in the Index, with 20 based on sales data from The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Ltd (SMMT) with Tesla added as a brand of topical interest. In addition, the report also showed how men and women differ when it comes to trusting automotive brands. Mercedes-Benz was most trusted overall by male car buyers whereas Audi and Ford shared the top spot as the brands in which women put the most faith. There were greater differences of opinion among some of the other brands, though. Kia, rated as second overall for men, was a lowly 15th for women. MINI, on the other hand, was ranked fifth overall by women and 15th by men.

Petrolban brought forward “For consumers, having trust in a purchase – and who they are buying it from – is fundamental to the buying journey. Therefore, we created the CarGurus Car Buyer Trust Index to help gain a deeper understanding of how trust is built, and the extent to which it informs car-buying decisions,” said Chris Knapman, CarGurus’ UK editor. “The Car Buyer Trust Index provides unprecedented insight into the role that trust plays in the car buying process, while at the same time showing our commitment to becoming the world’s most trusted and transparent car-buying platform.” Founded by TripAdvisor co-founder Langley Steinert, CarGurus combines dealer reviews with comprehensive car valuation analytics to bring trust and transparency to the automotive marketplace, allowing buyers to quickly and easily find great deals from the best dealers. The announcement was made at the UN Climate Summit. The announcement was made at the UN Climate Summit. The government has announced that the UK is bringing forward a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans to 2035. The ban was announced ahead of the launch of a UK-hosted UN climate summit, and will include hybrids for the first time. This effectively means that only new electric or hydrogen vehicles could be sold after this date, which will inevitably strongly impact the makeup of vehicles in UK dealerships and on our roads over the next 15-20 years. Alongside Sir David Attenborough at the event, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that “2020 must be the year we turn the tide on global warming” and is

setting out these plans as part of the UK’s commitment to hit a 2050 net zero emissions target. The PM called for international efforts to reach net zero as early as possible through investment in cleaner, greener technology, preservation of our natural habitat and measures to improve resilience to climate change impact. David Attenborough said: “Now although we have agreed on the problem we have to do something about it. We don’t need to emphasise that the longer we leave it... the worse it is going to get. So now is the moment. It is up to us to organise the nations of the world to do something about it.”
