Television royalty Joanna Lumley paid a visit to Fox Valley last month to open the brand new Wellness Spa at Sandersons, a vision by the late Deborah Holmes who sadly passed away earlier this year. Joanna’s first visit was back in 2016 and it was fantastic to see her return and mark the legacy of the store’s founder. It’s a bit of a television personality issue this one, with Jack Whitehall nipping in for a cuppa ahead of his Fly DSA Arena show on 1 December – check out that interview on page 70, whilst Joseph Food caught up with globetrotter Simon Reeve to chat about his life and his show at the City Hall on 17 October. Elsewhere we’ve got the usual features, including a bumper food and drink section which includes some exciting news our friends over at Bradfield Brewery and their new venture. As always, do get in touch once you’ve given us a read. Whether it’s feedback, local events, ideas or you just want to have a chinwag, the virtual door is always open!

True North, which already owns a number of venues throughout Yorkshire and Derbyshire including The Broadfield on Abbeydale Road and the Riverside in Kelham Island, is bringing its wealth of experience in the hospitality industry to reinvent the Punchbowl in Crookes. Hattrick For Doncaster Sheffield Airport The airport has been named best UK airport by Which? Magazine for the third year running Doncaster Sheffield Airport has topped the Which? Magazine Best and Worst UK Airports survey for the third time – and its fifth appearance in the top five. The survey measured 6,237 separate airport experiences remarking that ‘a staggering 97% of its passengers would recommend Doncaster Sheffield, praising its personable and helpful staff’. Other areas of note were ‘accessible parking (rated favourably by respondents) coupled with short or non-existent security and passport control queues create a stress-free journey.’ Robert Hough, chairman of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, said: “We’re proud to be judged the UK and the north’s best airport, this is great recognition of the exceptional customer service offered by every single member of the team. We have always set out to deliver a topclass passenger experience that people can’t get at any other airport. Lengthy queues, disruption and hassle are not what people should experience when at an airport. “We’ve enjoyed a strong performance this year with more routes announced than any other airport in the UK. Looking towards 2020 we will be focussing our efforts in delivering the next stage of our masterplan, which has already received overwhelming support, from our local contribution, to the national level impact we can make with via a simple rail connection into the East Coast Mainline.” The poll cemented DSA as Yorkshire’s favourite airport, scoring 86% overall. DSA received five-star ratings for queues at security and passport control and a four-star rating for staff, seating and loos. The Which? Award comes on the back of another great year with

passenger numbers predicted to grow to 1.45 million in 2019/20, with more new destinations for any UK airport since August 2018 including two new long-haul destinations – Sanford, Florida and Cancun, Mexico. Which? Travel’s Naomi Leach said: “It is clear that smaller airports are generally outperforming their larger counterparts with seamless security checks and friendly staff making the biggest impression with flyers. “So if you have the luxury of choice when it comes to which airport you fly from, choose Doncaster Sheffield over Leeds Bradford, Southend over Luton, Edinburgh over Aberdeen and Belfast City over Belfast International for a smoother start to your trip.” Ian Smith, director of commercial and passenger experience at DSA, said: “This third consecutive win in such a prestigious publication is validation of the commitment of the whole team to deliver easy, fast and friendly service for our customers for the whole of their airport journey. flydsa.co.uk

Samuel Holberry

The home of Tramlines, Farmers Blonde and some of Yorkshire’s most beautiful scenery, there’s more to North Sheffield than meets the eye. Have you got an interesting historical fact that NorthBound readers need to know? Email paul@ northboundmagazine.co.uk

Back in early 19th century Sheffield, the city had no local MP to represent its people in parliament and the majority of the local population were unable to vote anyway. The high taxes coming from Westminster heightened this sense of disenfranchisement until Samuel Holberry, an active supporter of the Chartist movement to gain political rights for the working classes, organised an armed militia to take over Sheffield Town Hall, taking out every policeman, soldier and watchman that stood in their way. However, the plot was betrayed by James Allen, the landlord of the Station Inn, Rotherham, who had overheard their plans. In 1840, Holberry was convicted of conspiracy to riot and sedition and was sentenced to four years imprisonment at Northallerton House of Correction. He died only two years into his sentence after being transferred to York Castle and contracting tuberculosis, but Holberry and the cause he stood for lived on with 50,000 people said to have been a part of his funeral procession through Sheffield.

Three of Sheffield’s creative sons join together for a special event at the Moor’s longstanding department store

INSPIRED BY ATKINSONS The Atkinsons department store on the Moor has, for the last 147 years, been one of the most successful and popular shops on the high street. It was established in 1872 as a simple drapery operated by John Atkinson who had begun what was to become an incredibly lucrative career as a store assistant to Cole Brother’s in 1865. Selling everything from fashion to furniture, cosmetics and kitchen ware, Atkinsons has serviced Sheffielders for more than a century and will, more than likely, continue to do so for a century more. Being one of the oldest and most revered stores in the city it should come as no surprise that generations of people would have fond memories of it. One of those people is none other than Martyn Ware, founder of synth new wave bands Human League and Heaven 17, and who helped kick off the careers of other artists such as Terence Trent D’Arby and even helped revitalise Tina Turner after a slump in 1983. This month, Martyn returns to his native Sheffield to raise money for the Weston Park Cancer Charity, which has partnered with Atkinsons, to give back to the community on 14 October for a special event held at the famous store. Ware commented on his own memories of visiting Atkinsons as a small boy with his mother in the 1960s, buying records and getting a quick cup of tea in the café. The star was still a regular at the store even when he first hit the big time with the Human League and singles like ‘Being Boiled’ in the late 1970s. 16 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

He said: “I used to live in Broomhall flats, so the centre of town, and in particular the Moor, was our stomping ground. In the 1970s Virgin Records had a store at the bottom of the Moor, and we would regularly pop into Atkinsons to visit the café, or even sometimes to buy records and clothes.” Ware will be joined by Neil Anderson, author of The Dirty Stop Out’s Guide, a book which celebrates the different nightspots of the city throughout the decades. “I still remember my grandma recounting the splendid Christmas displays prior to the Sheffield Blitz. And her pride when the present store opened to great fanfare in 1960 – a full 20 years after the original store was flattened by the Nazis. The store is a true survivor and it’s a true honour to have my own products on sale there.” Matt Cockayne, a local graphic artist who has produced many fine impressions of the cityscape, also has links with the longstanding store and will be there for the same event. “My first job at 17 was working as a pot washer in Massarella’s within Atkinsons. I like the store and the fact it is a part of Sheffield’s fabric.” Atkinsons store manager David Cartwright added: “#InspiredBySheffield day is all about celebrating what’s

fantastic about our city. We’ve been lucky enough to be part of the fabric of Sheffield for the past 147 years and I want to say a big thank you to our customers – old and new – that have been part of that journey. I also want to extend my thanks to our staff, who have played such a big part in our success story. “The store has been inspired by the fantastic improvements to the Moor and have been updating and improving our store a result. We’re delighted to offer the best names in domestic appliances, cookshop, furniture, beds and other departments and we’re constantly checking out new trends so that we can add more to the store. Make sure you come in to see what’s new.” The event takes place at Atkinsons on 14 October. Head over to atkinsonsofsheffield. co.uk for more information.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION Sandersonswasnominated for twoawards at the esteemed DrapersIndependents Awards Just a few weeks before Joanna’s visit, Sandersons was awarded a prestigious national independent retail award at a glittering awards ceremony held in London. The store was shortlisted in June this year for Best New Independent Retailer and Best Customer Experience, along with nine other independent stores in both categories, at this year’s Drapers Independents Awards. The Sandersons team attended the ceremony at the Brewery in London back in September alongside some of the industry’s top independent retailers from around the UK and received the

prestigious award from the editor of Drapers Kirsty McGregor. The store first opened in September 2016 and continues to introduce new independent and national brands every season including Tommy Hilfiger, Apricot and Barbour International. Sandersons was of course founded by Yorkshire businesswoman Deborah Holmes, who sadly passed away in January this year. Deborah’s husband, Mark Dransfield, owner of the award winning South Yorkshire property company Dransfield Properties, now heads up the business and works with the store team to continue Deborah’s vision to provide a completely unique retail experience. Mark Dransfield said of the award: “I am delighted

and so proud of my fantastic team who work hard every day to upkeep the high standards and continue the legacy of my wife, Deborah. “As a team we have worked hard over our first three years to establish ourselves amongst the big names in UK department stores, but we truly do pride ourselves on offering a completely unique experience unlike anywhere else which is what makes us successful.”

An audience with Simon… Words: Joseph Food

THEGLOBETROTTING AUTHORAND TRAVELJOURNALISTSIMON REEVE TALKS TO NORTHBOUND MAGAZINE ABOUT THE INSIGHTS GLEANED FROMVISITINGOVER 120 COUNTRIES You grew up in Acton, West London – obviously not the most outdoorsy of places. Where do you think the initial interest with exploration came from? I think it stemmed from realising the experiences and emotions you can enjoy as a result of getting outside and going on a bit of a journey; it was by actually doing it that I really learnt to love it. I’d been on holidays before my first travel programme, but I hadn’t been on adventures quite like that, and it was really from the very start, from day one of the first ten series that I did, that I found it fascinating and exciting. I didn’t come from a wealthy, travelling family; I didn’t get on a plane until I started working as an adult, even though many assume that I’m a public school boy who went to a big university. No, my background is very different.

Not a big Geography or History buff at school, then? Boy Scouts at least? No, I wasn’t really into anything! I was a kid who really struggled, had a really tough time in my early to mid-teens, and I was a very naughty lad who got involved with a gang. I carried a knife and got into quite a lot of trouble. Do you ever reflect on why you might have gone down that path? Well, it wasn’t really like an active choice I didn’t come to a crossroads or anything. It was just lots of little life events that can turn and shape your existence and I think we often imagine that kids who end up on the wrong side of the law have made some fundamental choice, but it wasn’t like that for me. It was just that I didn’t get caught and grew up in a tricky area at a tricky time and lots of people were carrying a blade and that was generally because we were all scared, frankly, and, you know, I was mugged and beaten up and all sorts of stuff happened.

It’s a pertinent topic with the high knife crime levels in London today. You’ve actually got a bit of personal insight into how easy it can be to get dragged into that world. I think it’s difficult for or it’s dangerous for a middle-aged television presenter to start droning on about what he thinks young people today are doing, but I think the issues have been around forever and kids look for identity, they look for meaning, and although people think childhood is a safe time, I actually think if you slap on a school uniform and you walk through urban streets every day, then you can become a right target for kids from other schools and other gangs, especially in difficult areas. There are lots of issues involved, but in my case I had a tricky time, a lot of mental health problems, and I guess it gives me a little bit of an insight into the issues affecting kids today. However, I think more than anything, I have been very lucky in life and I feel that too many people imagine where they are today is just the result of their incredible talent and hard work and they can’t recognise the sheer bloody fortune in coming from a particular set of circumstances and basically being lucky. I’ve travelled this planet and met people who are far cleverer and funnier than I am and yet they live in a village in the middle of bloody

nowhere and may never escape that set of surroundings. They’re condemned by a bit of bad luck whereas I’m privileged; I come from what is still one of the best countries in the world to be born in, at one of the best times in the history of our species. Can you tell us how you got into making your first travel programme, Meet the Stans, which first aired in 2003. I got into working on the telly as a result of writing books; I wrote a number of books on dark and depressing issues about terrorism and biological warfare and organised crime and that led to discussions with the BBC about making TV programmes. For Meet the Stans I went on a journey around Central Asia, the area to the north of Afghanistan, and visited Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, with the idea of blending adventure with social issues. So I would go on very genuine journeys but I was working on these stories of culture, conflict, poverty, whatever is affecting the people in the place we’d been to – and many years later, we’re still making the same programmes.

I’d imagine one difficulty with travel journalism is trying to condense a country’s culture or story into maybe a 45-minute programme, for example. What in your opinion are the most challenging aspects of what you do? I think you’re right, you can’t hope to try and condense Russia, for example, into three one-hour programmes. It’s completely mad but it’s part of television: it’s not a book, it’s not a PhD dissertation, and in TV we have to make some bigger compromises. But that said, we are broadcasting to a healthy chunk of people watching in Britain and 60+ other countries around the world to help them get interested in a place and hopefully that will help them to learn a bit about it and love our whole world a little bit more as a result. The biggest issue for me, though, on a professional level, is trying to fairly and accurately show what the consequences of seven billion human beings on this planet are doing to our world, trying to give a sense of the scale of the changes that are underway at the moment. Another difficult aspect personally is meeting somebody, listening to them share a difficult life story with us, and then we get up and leave them. It is inevitably the nature of the job but it means I have to leave feeling like a parasite.

www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk | 29

simon reeve

I guess you try to rationalise that with shining a light on their story, which can help raise awareness of a subject or issue, but there’s still a bit of guilt upon seeing people and their most vulnerable and leaving? You’re pretty spot on. It is true that there is value in shining a light and sharing somebody’s story from another part of the world with viewers elsewhere, but I still feel it’s not a part of the process that I’m proud of. I often wish we could take people with us or radically change their life.

“TRAVELIS STILL SUCHA WONDERFUL THINGTO DO, AS ITISANONGOING, DAILYEDUCATION TOBETRAVELLING. I LEARNSOMETHING EVERYSINGLEDAY, WHICHIS AHELL OF APRIVILEGE.” How important in the current political climate is it that people, if they can, take the opportunity to travel and learn about other cultures? Is there a sense that your job has taken on a greater level of important from entertainment to a bit of a fight against an “Us vs Them” mentality? I think it’s a really good question about whether it’s more important now, as I think it’s always been important, but I think it’s a more complicated world now in many ways than it has been, simply because there are a lot more of us moving at a faster pace. I think tracking and trying to stop and explain those changes is really vital and I think – I hope – that we have a very tiny role to play in doing that. People are watching at home who do give a damn and do care about it. I think there is an attempt by some to turn inward, and not just by putting up borders outside, but by focussing on the country within and

I can understand that desire but we are too connected as people now to ignore the rest of the world. And whatever you think about the mass movement of people around our planet, we definitely need to know about the stories and situations where other people live because it completely, dramatically, affects us in ways it might’ve not have done in the past. Looking at the blurb for the live shows there are mentions of various escapades but there are three that stand out: being chased by pirates, hounded by the mafia, and bombed by Colombian barons. Out of that trio which was the worst? I think the scariest – and the most annoying, in a way – was being bombed by Colombian barons. There was one specific moment when a car bomb went off outside a place where myself and the film

30 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

team were having dinner and we’d left our cameras behind so couldn’t document any of it once we got up from under the tables. I do talk about some absurd and dangerous situations I’ve been on my journey in the theatre show but I also talk about some inspiring people that I’ve met, I talk about why I think travel is still such a wonderful thing to do, as it is an ongoing, daily education to be travelling. I learn something every single day, which is a hell of a privilege. An Audience with Simon Reeve comes to Sheffield City Hall on 17 October. Head to sheffieldcityhall.co.uk for more info.

FOX VALLEY

Fox valley News FLORAL FOX VALLEY The centre was praised for its beautiful planting across the site The floral displays at Fox Valley shopping centre have received a prestigious Gold Award at the recent Yorkshire in Bloom competition. The centre was praised for its beautiful planting across the site as well as its range of local events and community engagement at a special award ceremony held in York. The centre opened in June 2016 and has won several national and regional awards including the RICS pro-Yorkshire Award for Regeneration. This is the second year that Fox Valley has been put forward for an award in the Yorkshire heats of Britain in Bloom and the judges were full of praise for the team’s approach as well as the striking hanging baskets and planters and the wildflower banking at the centre. Local landscape gardener Brett Fearnley-Cook has worked with the Fox Valley team over the last 12 months to help improve the centre’s floral displays, with the hanging baskets supplied by the centre’s florist Fleur de Lys.

John Crawshaw’s new venture launches at Fox Valley The popular north Sheffield family butchers John Crawshaws have launched a brand-new venture at Fox Valley with a new sandwich trailer which opened on 23 September. The team have transformed a rustic trailer to create their new Seven Hills Grill which is now based outside their busy Fox Valley store with an attractive outdoor seating area for shoppers to enjoy. The Seven Hill Grill will stock a delicious range of hot sandwiches and as well as coffee and pie available in the coming winter months. Seven Hills Grill will also be open from 7am – 3pm, making the trailer a perfect way to grab a lunchtime snack.

34 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

Operations director at Dransfield Properties Medi Parry-Williams said: “We are absolutely delighted to have scored so highly and received a Gold Award for the Yorkshire in Bloom Awards at Fox Valley. “Our team have worked incredibly hard to improve on last year’s submission and it really is testament to all their hard work that we have received this award. We’ve also been delighted to work with the 3rd Stocksbridge Scouts this year on an area they’ve planted up for us.”

Fox Valley’s sister centres, Sanderson Arcade in Morpeth and Marshalls Yard in Gainsborough, are regular winners in their own regional In Bloom award schemes and Market Cross in Selby has also been awarded a Silver Gilt in Yorkshire in Bloom.

CRAWSHAW’S WINTERWARMERS Sandwiches can also be made to pre order and customers can use the store’s new phone number – 0114 213 8211. Their new addition the Seven Hills Grill will be their second sandwich shop – the sister store is based on Manchester Road in Stocksbridge. John Crawshaw Butchers was founded by John’s father Brian when he opened their first shop in Stocksbridge in 1955. They now have shops on Manchester Road in Stocksbridge, Fox Valley, Chapeltown and Hillsborough. The Fox Valley shop stocks locally sourced fresh meat, pies, pasties and sausage rolls. They also have a wide selection of ready to cook dishes as well as a section dedicated to the lunchtime rush. The butchers has also recently introduced a click and collect service which allows customers to buy products online and collect the next day in their shop. Free

delivery is also available on orders of £50 or over. John Crawshaw told us “We take great pride in what we do ensuring it tastes as good as it looks. We look forward to seeing you all soon, from the directors and staff at John Crawshaw Butchers.” Fox Valley tenant liaison manager Claire Reynolds said: ‘We are delighted that John Crawshaws are expanding their business with the new addition of the Seven Hills Grill. We wish them all the best of luck here at Fox Valley and think the new sandwich trailer is going to go down a treat with shoppers.” johncrawshaws.co.uk

ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS Thelaunch of Sandersons’new wellnessspa area attracted a famous guest… The team at Sandersons Department Store at Fox Valley welcomed back their Absolutely Fabulous friend Joanna Lumley OBE last month for the launch of the store’s unique new Wellness Spa and Organics area. Hundreds of shoppers turned out for the chance to meet the celebrity guest who spent time chatting to staff and shoppers as well as being given a tour of the awardwinning shopping centre by managing director of Dransfield Properties, Mark Dransfield. Two beautifully designed treatment rooms as well as a relaxing and calm, lounge-style seating area have been created – with a reception area and access from the ground floor of the main store. Both the Spa and the Sandersons Organics concept have been created to build on the lasting legacy of the store’s founder Deborah Holmes, who passed away in January this year. Deborah was passionate about the importance of the ingredients used in skincare and beauty products as well as appreciating complementary and alternative therapies. The store is working with brands including Voya, SKN-RG, Clarins and Caudalie as well as SoNatural Therapy. Joanna Lumley officially opened the north Sheffield retail development in June 2016 when Sandersons was still being built. Deborah Holmes gave Joanna a tour of the site and showed her the vision of the store. Last month she returned to the store to see

that vision come to fruition and to open the new Wellness Spa and Organics. Joanna said: “I can’t tell you how exciting it has been to be here. The first time I came to Fox Valley I thought it was so perfect. Today I have come back and it’s lovely to see that all the trees have grown, everything has settled in, some of the shops have changed and it is all looking just sensational. “Opening that beautiful spa in memory of Debs and being in Sandersons today has just been wonderful. This is such a fantastic place; it is as if it was always here and as if it is as old as the hills that surround it and just as beautiful.” Mark Dransfield, who is the managing director of Dransfield Properties, said: “It’s been such a proud day for the whole Sandersons team to have the opportunity to show Joanna Lumley our lovely store and it’s been such a wonderful tribute to Debs. “We really have set out to create something special here at Sandersons Spa and Organics. We have really set out to create something special with the Sandersons Spa with a focus on the highest quality products and providing vegan and natural treatments.

A taste of modern Britain is coming to Ecclesfield A brand new British-themed restaurant is opening in Ecclesfield in early November, with head chef Jordan hoping to bring something new to the dining scene. Speaking to NorthBound magazine, Jordan said: “It’s going to be nice food and of a high quality. We’re looking at a modern British menu with a European influence.” 71 has three separate menus, one for a pub lunch, one for breakfast and one for à la carte. The last of which features dishes like pan-fried chicken, beef cheek and duck breast, whilst heartier dishes like pie and fish and chips are available on the lunch menu. The breakfast menu is similarly tasty, with eggs benedict, smoked salmon and a full English listed as the early morning offering.

71 Restaurantand baris hoping to bring something newto the area

It isn’t the first foray into the industry for Jordan. “I worked at the School House in Normanton and then at the Cross Scythes in Totley so I’ve been in the industry a while. I’ve always wanted to have my own restaurant and this place in Ecclesfield came up! “The restaurant and bar areas are completely separate, so if people want to come in for just a drink, the people having a meal won’t be disturbed.” The restaurant will be opening in early November, open 08:30am to 10:30pm Monday to Saturday and 4pm on Sundays. 71 Monteney Crescent, Sheffield, S5 9DP // 71restaurantandbar.yolasite.com

TAP

TAKEOVER Bradfield Brewery has taken over the Wharncliffe Arms in Wharncliffe Side

Sheffield-based Bradfield Brewery has taken ownership of the much-loved Wharncliffe Arms pub situated in Wharncliffe Side. The pub was put on the market for sale in July 2019 after a short period of closure. Bradfield Brewery, having a keen interest in traditional style community public houses, vested its interest and subsequently were successful in the purchase of the property. With contracts now exchanged, the brewery is keen to get the doors open and give a warm welcome to customers old and new. Shortly to become the third official tap for Bradfield Brewery, the Wharncliffe Arms will feature a selection of cask ales from the Farmers Ales range produced by the brewery, as well as a great selection of fine wines, spirits and soft drinks. The pub was previously renowned for its community feel and friendly atmosphere and this is something that Bradfield is keen to reinstate. Operating a public house venue is not something new for Bradfield Brewery which has enjoyed over a decade of success at its original tap, The Nags Head

at Loxley, as well as continued success with its more recent acquisition, the King and Miller at Deepcar. Bradfield Brewery is based on a busy working farm in the picturesque village of Bradfield in Sheffield. Since brewing its first cask ale in 2005, the brewery has grown from strength to the strength with its Farmers Ale range now available in outlets nationwide. John Gill, director at Bradfield Brewery, said: “We are excited at the opportunity to serve another local community with a traditional style public house which will offer great ales in a friendly atmosphere. We strongly believe that traditional pubs should remain a part of our society and we are pleased to have secured this opportunity to bring this offering to the local community of Wharncliffe Side.” The Wharncliffe Arms will be re-opening soon, with a date yet to be confirmed. The brewery will be recruiting for a ‘live in’ manager for the day to day running of the pub. For further details or to express your interest in this upcoming position, please contact Bradfield Brewery on 0114 2851118 or email at lisa@bradfieldbrewery.com 365 Burncross Rd, S35 1SB // bradfieldbrewery.com

The huge Bavarian celebration is back at Magna this month

Oh, Beer Me! Learn the lingo Zum WohlSaufen

Oktoberfest is one of the most important celebrations in Bavarian culture, one that has been held on an annual basis since 1810 and attracts over half a million visitors to Germany every year. It is a tradition that has often been imitated, and for good reason, as on a good year well-over 7.7 million litres of beer will be consumed. Sheisse! A great booze-up…no, to be certain, the booze-up to end all booze-ups and it is on its way to Sheffield as the Magna venue will be hosting its very own Oktoberfest on Saturday 19 October. But beer is not the only thing this kegger will have going for it, Magna’s Oktoberfest will have some live music performed by a DJ, along with an excellent selection of continental lagers and food straight outta’ Bavaria, as well as live bands on stage featuring the likes of Homesteads and

Flashback, both of which are sure to put the Oom back into your pah-pah. Book now for the Bierkiller ticket, between £15 and £24, and you can get access to food and drink, and complimentary sticker cup and hat. Tickets are £6 if you pay online and £8 if you pay at the door, so get your gear on (and by that we, of course, mean Lederhosen). The Magna Oktoberfest takes place on 19 October 2019 from 6pm until midnight, at Magna, Magna Way, Templeborough. visitmagna.co.uk/whats-on/oktoberfestat-magna

To good health, a traditional toast.

Saufen

A way to say ‘booze’. You might also say ‘das saufen’ meaning ‘to drink’.

Trinken or Das Trinken Meaning ‘drinking’. Meaning you will be doing lots of trinken. Verstehst?

Prost! A traditional cheers at Oktoberfest.

Lebensabschnittpartner A proper long word which means “the person I am with today”. Try saying that after three steins…

JACK WHITEHALL

Adored for his superb work on television, the comedian is, if anything, even more at home in the live arena. We caught up with Jack for a quick natter ahead of his Fly DSA Arena show on 1 December. On stand up I love the rapport you get with a live audience. It’s great that I’ve built an audience over the years. It’s very exciting that they know me and have seen the progression of my stand-up. They shout things out and that becomes part of the show. I love the thrill of stand-up – it’s really immediate. It’s so exciting to be able to go on and get an instant reaction from the audience. I also love the fact that anything can happen – it is different every single night. You can change things in the spur of the moment. You’re totally in control. There is something so appealing about being able to get up on stage in front of an audience and have a very authentic, instantaneous and organic experience with them. I love that element of stand-up. When you go away and do writing and acting, you miss that. You get the itch to return to stand-up. It’s a bug. I’d find it very hard ever to quit it. I’ll always come back to it. It’s my first love. On making an entrance Last time I came on stage on a horse. In the first show, it did a shit on stage as soon as it came on. The audience were in absolute hysterics especially as I had to clean it up before I could start the show. Because it was so funny, I thought, ‘We need that to happen every night. Either we feed the horse extra before we come on or we plant a shit on stage.’ We opted for the latter. So we planted shit on stage, and every night it got a huge laugh. The downside was I also had to clean it up every night! On what we can expect from his Fly DSA Arena show You’re always reflecting on what’s going on in your life. I’ve been travelling a lot with my dad recently, so I’ll be talking about going around the world with him. I’ll be discussing stuff about being in America, too, and how different I find that from the UK. I’ll also be talking about the sensitivity of the world at the moment and how it is very easy to cause offence and end up in trouble. Skirting that line can be very difficult.

And how we should expect the unexpected too It’s great when something unexpected happens in the moment. My stage caught fire in Leeds once, and that suddenly became the show. I have pyrotechnics on stage because I always try to make my shows like a Beyoncé gig. But that night in Leeds the pyrotechnics went off in the wrong direction and part of the stage caught fire. The audience were laughing so hard because they thought it was part of the show. They didn’t know that something had gone seriously wrong and that I was in peril. But they were just laughing away, totally oblivious to that. At first, I didn’t even realise what was going on because I had my back to the fire. Suddenly, the stage manager rushed on stage, grabbed me and dragged me off. I said, ‘What the hell is going on?’ He replied, ‘Look, the stage is on fire!’ It was all quite dramatic, but the audience really loved it.

“I’mtryingtofindsome funinBrexit,butit’squite hard.It’slikeadirty word.Thewholeaudience clenchesupwhenyou mentionit.”

On Brexit I’m trying to find some fun in Brexit, but it’s quite hard. It’s like a dirty word. The whole audience clenches up when you mention it. That’s a challenge in itself. How can you do Brexit material and make people laugh about it? We are living in troubled times. Without wishing to give what I do any higher meaning, I think it’s really good to be distracted and laugh like an idiot for two hours. On stage I like to create a lot of joy and silliness, as I think the world is a depressing enough place as it is. I hope my show will be a fun distraction. I will be trying to get people beaming as they leave the auditorium at the end of the evening.

Jack Whitehall plays the Fly DSA Arena on 1 December as part of his Stood Up UK tour. Tickets are available from flydsaarena.co.uk.

Health and Fitness

THE HOLISTIC WAY Claire Denton from CHD Holistics, based in Hillsborough, S6, talks us through her home-based holistic therapy service and why she adores her job. When anyone thinks of work, people usually feel fed, up, stressed, bored or tired. I’ve been qualified in massage and holistic therapy since December 2018, and I can honestly say it’s the best career path I have taken. I love helping people feel relaxed and help them de-stress. I actually find it a lovely relaxing job to do! I base my treatments mainly at my home in Hillsborough although I am more than happy to bring my massage table to someone’s front room if it helps. As well as massages, I am qualified in reflexology, Hopi ear candling and I am hopefully going to be gaining my level two in reiki in the next couple of months. In my massages, I focus very much on tense muscles and physical results of stress and try and bring as much relaxation and calm into the room as possible. With any of my treatments I am more than happy to personalise it, if someone wants to sit up instead of lay or if someone wants to have some hot stones on a back neck and shoulder

massage then if I can then I will! My client always comes first. It’s their treatment, their room, their relaxation time. Being able to offer people time out from their busy schedules and provide some relaxation I think is very important especially in today’s busy lifestyle we all have. We very often look after the ones around us and forget about ourselves. Just treating yourself to even just one hour of relaxation every so often makes all the difference. I am a huge believer in finding time for yourself and looking after your body and mind. I know that feeling of tiredness, stress, having no time for yourself and overall a low mood all in one! Put yourself first, even if it’s just 30 minutes per week. Life is busy, stressful and tiring. There is a lot of stress and negativity out there and it takes a lot out of you. Make sure you put time aside to just find yourself again and get that calm feeling back!

Claire offers a range of massages and therapy based at her home in Hillsborough. Contact Claire on 07878 493661 to book or head to facebook.com/chdholistics.

MOTORING AHEAD Newhall Motors is 17 years old and still going strong as one of the region’s leading BMW specialists

Founded in 2002 by Sean Cooke, Newhall Motors provides a specialist service for BMW owners and fanatics alike in the Steel City. Sean has been employed in the motor trade since leaving school in 1986: a span of nearly 30 years of solid experience, of which twenty have been with BMWs. “I bought my first BMW (a 528i E28) back in 1986,” Sean said. “As both a mechanic and a BMW enthusiast, I felt that BMW owners needed a realistic and reliable alternative to the often excessive prices charged for servicing, maintenance and repairs.” Sean has focussed the development of the business around what he considers to be the essential elements of staff training: equipment and good workshop practice rather than the usual main dealer frills. This approach to customer service has meant that Sean and his staff have been able to establish themselves as not only great value for money but also as the ‘go to guys’ in terms of BMW expertise. You can find Newhall Motors in Unit 5 on the Newhall Trading Estate on Sanderson Street in the east end of Sheffield, near to Meadowhall, the Fly DSA Arena and the M1 motorway.
